This article discusses the effect of physical and chemical modifications of starches on the anionic and cationic flotation of silica from oxidized iron ores and magnetite-taconite concentrates. It also deals with the results of the interaction of starch, pH, and calcium ions on the flocculation, clarification, and filtration of iron ore slimes and magnetite-taconite tailings. Starches, particularly when an-ionically modified, were found to be effective depressants in anionic silica flotation. British gums and dextrins were beneficial for oxidized iron ores, but none of the starches or starch derivatives appeared to have any effect on magnetite-taconite concentrates. The flocculation and filtration of iron ore slimes were affected most strongly by the level of starch, to a lesser degree by the pH, and virtually not at all by the level of calcium chloride. The clarification of iron ore slimes was complexly dependent on these three factors. The flocculation of magnetite-taconite tailings depended mainly on the level of starch, whereas their clarification depended on the level of lime. As previously reported in the literature, selective flocculation and partial upgrading of a semitaconite could be readily attained with starch and calcium chloride. A previous article discussed some of the parameters that are important when various corn starches are applied to the soap flotation of activated silica from iron ores and to the flocculation of iron ore slimes.' Methods of solubilizing the starches and the molecular size after mechanical and thermal treatments, as inferred from the viscosity measurements, were shown to influence the adsorption characteristics on iron ores, and the residual concentrations of both calcium ion and starch in the pulp liquor were in direct correlation with the flotation and flocculation behavior.2-4 The present article summarizes the results of more recent tests conducted to ascertain the role of starches and starch derivatives in various phases of iron ore beneficiation. The scope of this investigation has been extended to include not only anionic and cationic flotation, but also the flocculation and filtration of iron oxide slimes, the selective flocculation and partial upgrading of semitaconites, and the flocculation and clarification of magnetite-taconite tailings —all problems that are of vital importance to the iron ore industry of Minnesota. By combining a practical approach with adsorption studies and by using single-mineral systems5 in these research efforts, it is believed that the ultimate goal of developing a suitable modification of starch structure may be realized. The topics covered in this article are limited to the empirical aspects of the research program on the depressant activity of starches and products in the cationic and anionic flotation of silica and of their role in flocculation, water clarification and filtration. For many years, geologists have inferred a connection between the evolution of the earth's crust and ore deposition, a connection coming under the heading of metallogeny. In recent years the concept of metallogeny has assumed major importance in the exploration planning of Russian geologists in their quest for new mineral sources. As defined by Radkevich, metallogeny is "the science which studies the laws governing the distribution of ore deposits in the earth's crust." However, since it can be argued that metallogeny does not contain enough certitude to be classified as a "science," it would be more appropriately defined as the study of metallogenic provinces, and metallogenic epochs.

The development of long-term plans and schedules for strip mines now faces many companies, especially those developing large properties in the West. The rule of mining the lowest strip ratios first, while delaying equipment acquisitions and recouping investment the fastest, sometimes creates the situation where stripping ratios are too high in the latter years of mining operations. A program concept taking life of mine return on investment into account is developed in this paper to optimize mine scheduling and equipment acquisition. In addition, quality considerations (heat content, ash, sulfur, and washability) can be considered by including the appropriate blending constraints to meet contract requirements.

INTRODUCTION Forecasting of metal and mineral prices is a complex and hazardous undertaking. In order to accurately forecast prices, the complexities of both marketing and production must be modeled for each commodity. Even with the most detailed model, the economy may change unexpectedly, invalidating the forecast. Because of these factors, this chapter will not attempt to present specific methods for price estimation. It will, however, review the fundamentals of price forecasting as applied to planning and design of the final pit shell. Recognizing that no price estimate can be exact, sensitivity analysis will be reviewed as an approach to coping with these unknown variations.

The US Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory tests to devise a process for recovering a marketable grade of tungsten from the brine of Searles Lake, Calif. The brine contains only 56 ppm W (70 ppm W03). Using ion exchange resins synthesized by USBM chemists, 98% oft he tungsten was extracted from the brine and 92% of the tungsten was recovered as a marketable iron-tungsten concentrate containing 44% tungsten as tungsten trioxide. Although major technical problems have largely been resolved, research is progressing to escalate testing in a process research unit to provide more reliable data for an economic appraisal.

No method of roof control yet devised has proven to be universally acceptable for the wide range of strata conditions experienced in U. S. coal mines. However, a relatively new innovation, the roof truss, has proven itself capable of preventing roof failures which both conventional and resin bolting could not. Presently, the economics of roof trusses are not favorable when compared to bolting due primarily to drilling and installation procedures, but this is expected to change with improved truss and equipment designs. To realize the full potential of this new method of roof control, design criteria are needed which can optimize the effect of the truss for varying strata conditions.

The development of Gulf Coast salt domes thus far, although enormously successful and productive, has proceeded in an unscheduled fashion governed by events rather than by a comprehensive plan. Motivation for the sequential progress of exploitation has included mineral discoveries, inventions, technological improvements, new needs, and a dynamic economy. Although it is too late to implement a plan for the entire cycle of exploitation of this resource, it would seem advisable to introduce now a system concept for further development. Viewed from this perspective, general determinative parameters should include economic, environmental, logistical, technical, and resource considerations, and more fundamentally, basic societal goals. Experience gained from planning in the Gulf Coast should provide guidelines for use elsewhere in the world.

GEOLOGISTS who are acquainted with the mines of northeastern Mexico realize that the most important lead-silver replacement deposits of the province are confined to a single formation. But since the formation is several hundred meters thick, the author has determined the relative position of the lead mantos in the belief that this information will prove useful in the search for new mines. This article describes the stratigraphic location of lead-silver replacement deposits known in several mines situated in a region comprising part of the states of Coahuila and Nuevo Leon. The area studied extends for 200 km* (125 miles) from east to west and 70 km (45 miles) north to south.

Total grinding mill system life is dependent upon the original selections and specifications of its components: the mill, its drive, drive motor, motor control, and power system. This paper discusses the complex considerations involved and the critical decisions which must be made by the buyer, the mill manufacturer, and by the gear vendor during the proposal and ordering stages. Interrelations between the mill manufacturer and the gear vendor, application of ACMA standards, how drive standards and specifications are refined through steady-state and computer-simulated torsional analyses are included, along with correlational field testing, as demands for larger sizes challenge the current state of the art.

Stringent environmental regulations, which have limited the use of sludge ponds, coupled with the economic incentive to clean more coal or to add fine coal cleaning additions to existing preparation plants have increased the use of static thickeners in preparation plants. The Lamella Gravity Settler, sometimes designated Lamella Thickener, is a shallow depth sedimentation device which has been applied in a variety of industrial process and wastewater control projects in place of the conventional raked thickeners. This paper presents the theory and design of the Lamella Thickener, as well as describing the operating results from several full scale installations in a variety of Appalachian preparation plants.

CENTRIFUGAL force has been utilized for the dewatering of fine coal for over 50 years by means of machines commonly called centrifugal dryers. In any centrifuge the coal and water are subjected to a spinning action which usually increases in intensity as the coal progresses through the machine. This spinning action, or the centrifugal force that it induces, tears water away from coal particles and produces a dewatered coal. The effectiveness of the dewatering action for any particular machine is governed by the size-consist of the coal and the centrifugal force imparted to the water on the coal.

IT is a well-known fact that the solubility of zinc compounds decreases when these compounds are roasted in contact with iron compounds, but descriptions of tests to quantitatively express the fact have not appeared in the literature. Possibly such an expression cannot be uniformly and exactly duplicated by different operators because of the variation in the personal equation. In a general way, however, the reactions between zinc compounds and iron compounds under roasting conditions will show a certain trend with changing conditions and the approximate quantitative expression of this trend appears reasonably well established by experimental work conducted for this purpose.

THE existence of the phase TiAg has not been reported previously. Other investigators have denied the existence of compounds in the Ti-Ag system.13' However, phases of equi-atomic proportion have been reported by Raub, et al.' in the (similar) systems of titanium with gold and copper and zir- conium with silver. Raub's work indicated that titanium and silver are immiscible in the liquid state. An efficient storage plant contains a known available volume of bulk solid, and feeds it at the required time, the prescribed rate and without degradation of the product. A storage bin may also perform other functions, such as blending different grades, degasifying aerated powders and isolating different gaseous media. A contact bed of particles flowing by gravity in counter-current with a gas or liquid may be used as a continuous reactor. In order to design an efficient storage plant or contact-bed reactor, it is necessary to be aware of the problems which can arise in flow and storage. The typical problems are no flow, erratic flow, flushing, insufficient flow, lack of designed capacity, segregation, degradation of the product and level control.
