Despite the many industrial uses, the world market for silver as a commodity is far from free, being dominated by the U.S. Government both through acts of Congress and by policy of the Treasury Department. This discussion will consider aspects of supply, demand, and price with a view to the future. Changes in Sources of Supply: The world's peak production of silver, 278 million oz, was in 1937. In the 1850's world production was about 30 million oz, having risen from a yearly average of 11 million oz for the first half of the century. From 1860 to 1940 there was a steady rise, broken only by World War I and the depression of the early 1930's.

This paper discusses the primary computer programs used by the Mine Safety and Health Administration's Bruceton Safety Technology Center to evaluate coal refuse disposal plans. These programs are currently being used by private consultants, government, and the coal industry for today's coal refuse disposal problems. This paper outlines five programs, their special features, and their importance in the design and construction of coal refuse disposal facilities. The purpose of the paper is to present the general steps necessary in the computer-modeling of each program. The programs that are discussed include BISHOP, STABL, RWE, DAMS2, and HEC-2, which cover the subject areas of slope stability, hydrographs, flood routing, and water surface profiles.

In the manufacture by the Bessemer process of soft steel suitable for rolling into fine sheets, tubes and 60 forth, a difficulty is sometimes met with, in the tendency of this kind of metal to rise violently and boil in the moulds while being cast; this results in hollow-topped ingots, and consequently in an undue amount of scrap in the subsequent rolling. It has been noticed that this peculiarity does not pertain to all pig-irons, some grades producing a blown metal which pours quietly, while others, in whatever way the blow may have been conducted, give a metal which rises in the moulds, accompanied by the evolution of large quantities of hydrogen and carbonic oxide gases, and requiring a long time to solidify. When ore bodies are faulted or mill feed turns refractory, mining managers and engineers act vigorously to convert imminent failure into eventual success. The recent proliferation of onerous environmental regulations and restraints is likewise a threat to successful mining enterprise, in some ways more insidious and dangerous than the problems presented by natural obstacles. The regulatory burden has become so heavy that a pall of pessimism covers much of the mining industry. In this paper we frankly recommend an approach that does not just "make the best of it" but rather directs the whole environmental process: first, to improve planning, engineering, and operating procedures; and, second, to demonstrate the need for modification of laws and regulations which are intolerably burdensome to both the mining industry and the public.

THE highly publicized shortage of students enrolled in engineering curricula has brought about a rapid increase in the enrollment in engineering schools in many parts of the country. Though most of the various curricula in the mineral industries field have participated in this increase, the experience at Pennsylvania State University has been that the nonmineral types of engineering have been increasing at a much more rapid rate than those in the College of Mineral Industries. [ ] It has been a matter of some concern to the staff of the College of Mineral Industries that enrollment in the curricula of the school has not been increasing at a rate commensurate with that experienced in the College of Engineering. If the lack of trained young graduates for our vital mineral industries is to be overcome, this situation must be remedied.

Results of a research project on investment or lost wax casting will be presented. The project was concerned with various aspects of the process as they are typical for the production of jewellery from gold alloys. During these investigations testing methods for investment quality as well as for casting quality and the various process parameters were developed and charateristic defects as they occur in practice were traced back to their origin in the process. Investigated were various static casting and centrifugal casting methods in different atmospheres as well as vacuum casting in devices of different design. It was shown that independent of the method a close control of the many process parameters interfering with each other is essential for a quality casting.

Bethlehem Steel's Research Department is developing a set of computer programs as mine-planning tools for Bethlehem's coal mines. Several of these computer programs have been completed and have been in routine use by Bethlehem Mines personnel since early 1975. The production scheduling and ventilation planning programs have been installed on an interactive time-sharing computer. The use of time sharing allows mines in remote locations to access these planning tools through standard phone lines and low-cost computer terminals. The capabilities of the interactive production scheduling and ventilation planning programs are briefly described. The advantages of implementing them using time sharing are discussed. A case study illustrates some of the benefits that planning based on the use of these programs has already provided.

Kaiser Sees Bright Future for Jamaica Kaiser Aluminum Co. has a big stake in the British West Indies, the Island of Jamaica in particular. There, Kaiser is busy developing one of the most promising bauxite finds in recent years. The $12 million operation was officially opened in February. Facilities have a rating of an annual capacity of 2 million tons and will supply Kaiser plants with ore for years. The ore comes across the Gulf of Mexico, up the Mississippi to stockpiles at Baton Rouge. The stockpile at Baton Rouge would throw many an old river boat skipper for a loss. Where no mountain once existed now stands a man-made bluff of bauxite, known as Bauxite Peak.

A process has been developed for recovering the refractory metals chromium (Cr), vanadium (V), molybdenum (Mo), and tungsten (W) in mixed secondary source materials, such as contaminated grinding wastes. The wastes are calcined with sodium carbonate in air to yield water-insoluble oxides of the base metals iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), and copper (Cu) and water-soluble salts of the refractory metals. An aqueous leach separates these two classes of metal values. Cobalt, nickel, and copper can be recovered from the oxidic residue by conventional processing methods. The leach solution is purified and then treated to recover the refractory metals. The process can accommodate a wide range of feed compositions and generates a minimum of aqueous effluents.

In 1951 the first ton of iron was shipped from West Africa; ten years later the total export exceeded 4 million tons, and an optimistic forecast for 1970 indicates a production capacity of something around 40 to 50 million tons. The quality of the ore varies from normal hematitic concentrates, through naturally enriched hematitic direct shipping ores with comparatively high content of ore fines, to dense, hard, rich lump ores of magmatic character. West Africa is largely composed of folded Pre-cambrian rocks trending generally northeast to southwest. They are exposed over about one third of West Africa and are part of the vast continental plateau which has an average elevation of about 1300 ft in this area.

The US Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory tests to devise a process for recovering a marketable grade of tungsten from the brine of Searles Lake, Calif. The brine contains only 56 ppm W (70ppm WO3). Using ion exchange resins synthesized by USBM chemists, 98% of the tungsten was extracted from the brine and 92% of the tungsten was recovered as a marketable iron-tungsten concentrate containing 44% tungsten as tungsten trioxide. Although major technical problems have largely been resolved, research is progressing to escalate testing in a process research unit to provide more reliable data for an economic appraisal

T he Radon mine is in the north end of the Big Indian mining district in San Juan County, Utah. Hecla Mining Co. operated the mine from early 1955 to early 1964 through an operating agreement with Federal Resources, Inc. Development consisted of a 3-compartment, 690-ft shaft, 4 main levels driven on the ore horizon and a haulage level below the ore. Evaluation of physical and economic factors showed that this flat-dipping ore occurrence could be mined by a low-cost coal mining method. The value of the deposit was high and unusual pre¬miums were possible by clean mining. Complete extraction without loss of ore pillars, minimum ore dilution and high production per man were obtained by longwall mining.

The Niobates (Columbates) and Tantalates are chiefly salts of metaniobic and metatantalic acid, RNb2O6 and RTa2O6; also in part Pyroniobates, R2Nb2O7, etc. Titanium is prominent in a number of the species, which are hence intermediate between the niobates and titanates. Niobium and tanta¬lum also enter into the composition of a few rare silicates, as wöhlerite, låvenite, etc. The following groups may be mentioned: The isometric PYROCHLORE GROUP, including pyrochlore, microlite, etc. The tetragonal FERGUSONITE Group, including fergusonite and sipylite. The orthorhombic COLUMBITE Group, including columbite and tantalite. Also the orthorhombic SAMARSKITE GROUP, including yttrotantalite, samarskite, and ånnerodite. The species belonging in this class are for the most part rare, and are hence but briefly described.

IN what ways can conventional geophysical methods be used in the search for quartz-sulphide veins covered by several feet of overburden? The New Park Mining Co., in search of an answer to this question, empirically tested simple geochemical, electrical, and magnetic methods over known ore bodies and geologic structures. Geochemical methods were the only ones found to be applicable to direct ore search. Indirect uses were found for electrical and magnetic tests. Experiments were conducted in the southeastern part of the Park City mining district. Ore in this part of the district is found principally in steeply dipping veins which are localized along faults and fractures that cut Paleozoic sediments and quartz diorite intrusives. Use of electric-wheel-driven haulage trucks at Chino dates back to 1963, and in today's fleet of 38 units, 17 trucks are electric-wheel- type powered with 700 hp diesel engines. Output of these engines is not adequate to exploit fully the 1200 hp potential of the two electric- wheel-drive motors, and, as a result, Chino has been testing larger prime power sources. An earlier test involved the use and evaluation of 1000 hp gas turbine engine in a conventional Model M-100 Unit Rig haulage truck (see [ ], May 1967, pp. 57-60). Now Chino has tested a trolley-diesel application in the same 100-ton capacity vehicle, and has shown that trolley power on electric-wheel-drive trucks can improve productivity rates from 18-36% on adverse grades, depending, of course, upon haul road profiles.

Before Capitol Hill hearings, primary metal producers are often called "concentrated industries" because there are relatively few companies in each category and most of them are large corporations. Capitol Hill still looks on large companies as inherently wrong, but there are about as many arguments one way as the other. Encourage Imports? Now comes Assistant Attorney General for Antitrust Richard W. McLaren to say that imports of metals and other basic materials should be encouraged to create competition for the concentrated industries here at home. Cloakroom analysts are wondering how this ties in with President Nixon's cabinet task force studying the copper price structure. This is chaired by Dr. Hendrik Houthakker, a member of the White House Council of Economic Advisers who has also indicated that the use of imports to pull down prices may be one way to create less inflation.

Man has always felt more comfortable breaking his life into categories or classifications. An otherwise bewildering life somehow becomes easier to bear when divided into neat measurable sections, each of which is fitted into its proper niche. It seems likely that the world's first economic geologist, when faced with the world's first two ore bodies, started his career by classifying them. Early on, he divided his ore bodies into those born of water, of fire, and of air. In retrospect this threefold classification was probably about as useful as the more complex ones that followed. This division of ore bodies probably did not help him in his search for new deposits, but it made him feel more secure in dealing with those already known.

The company attempting to sell coal to large utility plants is faced with a confusing array of quality parameters and specifications which are often poorly understood by both the utility company and coal supplier. While these specifications are placed on the coal by the utility company, many of them originate with the boiler manufacturer who must guarantee that his product will perform satisfactorily on the design coal. A proper understanding of these parameters by both the coal supplier and utility company can lead to a better understanding of their mutual problem. This paper brings together most of the parameters in common use today and attempts to show what the parameters mean to the boiler designer, particularly in the area of boiler slagging and fouling.

It would be hard to find a mineral region that has been more beset with " processes" for the extraction of gold from auriferous sulphides than North Carolina. And it would be hard to find a mineral region less sought by capital. So many promising mines have come to grief here (perhaps because they were too "promising"), SO many "processes" have been tried and abandoned, so much expensive machinery has been bought and thrown aside, that to invite money here for investing in gold mines is almost sure to cause a smile of incredulity, or a sigh of disappointed hopes.
