A $5000 contract to explore for asbestos in Marinette County. Wis., has been entered into between the Government and the Star Mining Co. of Madison, Wis. The Government will contribute 90 pct or $4500 to the cost of the project. The United States presently produces about 8 pct of its asbestos requirements. "Sulphur stockpiles are at a minimum for national security arid must not be further reduced," was the warning given by L. M. Williams, Jr., president of Freeport Sulphur Co. He stated that although the long-range outlook is favorable , current sulphur production cannot meet the demand and as a result the United States faces a crisis in the coming months.

AIME is closing the books on its first 100 years. In the next year the meetings and many papers will doubtless be filled with statistics on the growth of AIME, and, incidentally, on the mining industry. Let's try to keep our cool and avoid breaking our arms patting ourselves on the back. AIME, nationally and locally, runs on the drive and dynamism of a rather small number of its members. If you look at the annual SME Blue Book of national officers and committee members, you will be struck by the repetition of the same names throughout. Trend for a few men to shoulder the burdens and responsibilities can be seen on the local level, too.

The National Pocahontas Mine in Wyoming County, WV, has been developed in the Pocahontas No. 3 coal. During 14 months of ventilation surveys, the locations of large rockfalls, many in areas infrequently visited by mine personnel, were mapped. Several dozen rockfalls were later studied in detail. Kettlebottoms, rider seams, root-penetrated roof strata, slicken sides, and shales that spall are common in areas with a high density of rockfalls. Large-scale crossbedding and micaceous and carbonaceous films in sandstones are less common. Density of rockfalls in any area is related to the time elapsed since mining, thickness of overburden, and orientation of entries and panels. Some linear features overlie areas where rockfalls are densest. Most rockfalls occur during summer.

A decision was made by the management of International Salt Co. in 1960 to eliminate all waste products which were entering the waters of Lake Seneca. This was to be accomplished by the injection of waste slurries into an abandoned brine cavity. The effluent from the cavity was to be treated and used for the manufacture of salt or disposed by deep well injection into the Cherry Valley limestone. After several years of research and design, a construction permit was granted by the state of New York; the injection, recovery, and disposal wells were constructed and after a public hearing an operational permit was issued. A summary of the operational results of the system is given.

INTERACTION of dislocations on intersecting slip planes has long been considered a primary cause of work hardening in metals. Easy glide and low work-hardening rates have been observed experimentally only when single-crystal specimens were oriented so that one slip plane was initially favored. When single-crystal specimens have been oriented so that initially two or more slip planes were equally favored, high initial work-hardening rates have been observed. During in situ uranium mining using ammonium bicarbonate lixiviant, the ammonium exchanges with cations on the ore's clay. After mining is complete, the ammonium may desorb into post-leach ground water. For the particular ore studied, other elements (uranium and selenium) that are mobilized during the leaching process, have also been found in post-leach ground water. Laboratory column tests, used to simulate the leaching process, have shown that aluminum chloride can rapidly remove ammonium from the ore and, thus, greatly reduce the subsequent ammonium leakage level into ground water. The aluminum chloride has also been found to reduce the leakage levels of uranium and selenium. In addition, the aluminum chloride treatment produces a rapid increase in permeability.

THE Cuajone porphyry copper deposit is the northernmost of a group of three deposits in southern Peru controlled by the Southern Peru Copper Corp.-Toquepala, Quelleveco, and Cuajone- all within a 20-mile belt. Although small pockets of high-grade copper oxide ores were worked in the Cuajone area in the 19th century, it was not until 1939 that its potentialities as a disseminated deposit were recognized by O. C. Schmedeman. An exploratory drilling program was begun in December 1942 and continued until early 1945. The program was revived in November 1952 and completed early in 1954. Early exploration was by diamond drilling. Later exploration was predominantly churn drilling, with diamond drilling used only for wildcat holes.

The semi-variogram, the basic tool of geostatistical estimation procedures, must itself be estimated from the available data. From a numerically simulated two-dimensional deposit, with known variability expressed through its semi-variogram, the standard arithmetic mean estimator is used to calculate experimental semi-variograms. These are determined on a series of data sets obtained from the deposit with various sampling grids that cover different areas of the deposit and have a mite range in the number of available data. The orders of discrepancies between estimated and theoretical semi-variograms are determined in this idealized situation; and this provides a basis against which to assess experimental semi-variograms made on field data.

Concentradora "Doña Aida" (100 t /d capacity) was built in 1971-72 to treat dumps and ores containing mixed oxide-sulfide copper-gold-silver minerals derived from two veins. The veins, Don Felipe and Maria, are about 150 m apart, but are distinctly different mineralogically. The deposits are near Sun Juan de Guadalupe, Durango, Mexico. All new process equipment was manufactured locally, in or near Torreon, Coahuilu. Sampling, ore testing, flowsheet design, plant design, drawings, purchasing, financing, and construction, etc., were planned and directed by two engineers. Construction was executed by local miners and common labor (largely agricultural). The paper presents detailed costs for equipment and construction. The subsequent breaking-in operation is discussed.

It was found that a critical boron content exists which yields the maximum boron-hardenability effect in hypoeutectoid steels, as was predicted from the mechanism proposed in a previous paper. The hardenability of boron steels with boron contents between 0.00005 and 0.0017 pct was dependent on the boron content, austenitizing temperature, quenching temperature, and austenite grain size. The effects of these variables on hardenability can be explained by the mechanism previously proposed for the boron effect. A MECHANISM has been proposed to explain the effect of boron on the hardenability of steel.' A full survey of the laboratory and blast furnace tests carried out on two types of acid pellets is given. From the lab tests it appears that type B has a better low temperature disintegration index and a lower reducibility index than type A. The chemical composition and swelling indexes do not differ for both types. From the blast furnace test periods, carried out with a charge of 45% of pellets and 45% of sinter, it follows that both types of pellets lead to the same pig-iron production, blast furnace permeability, and blast furnace dust production. It also can be concluded that type B pellets cause a significantly higher coke consumption.

ALFRED WILLIAM GAUGER ??Al" or '?Doc" to his many friends in the coal and chemical industries- is known for his research talents and organizing ability. Appropriately the first public recognition of his technical ability was by the A.I.M.E. in the publishing of a paper by George A. Burrell and Alfred W. Gauger in the "Transactions" for the year 1916. "Al" Gauger was born at St. Paul, July 31, 1892. He graduated in chemistry at the University of Minnesota in 1914. A year later he began his initiation into the mysteries of coal mining when he joined the safety division of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Pitts- burgh, serving from 1915 to 1917.

HOW the Engineers' Memorial clock and carillon at Louvain has impressed the people of that city is indicated by the following letter sent by the Secretary of the University of Louvain to the Secretary of the United Engineering Society. We are still full of the memories of that splendid July 4, when we came into such .delightful contact with our American friends and more specially with the representation of the engineering societies of the United States. It was a great joy for all the members of the University to see those, American friends who have given to us such a splendid memorial in honor of- the brave men who fell in the Great War.

Secretary of the Interior, Franklin K. Lane, has appointed a commission of five mining and metallurgical experts from the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey to visit Europe to observe and study reconstruction methods in the devastated regions of France and Belgium. The chairman of the commission is Dr. Frederick G. Cottrell, chief metallurgist of the Bureau of Mines. The other members are: George S. Rice, the chief mining engineer of the same bureau; Frank H. Probert, consulting engineer of the bureau, and. professor of mining in the University of California; F. J. Cameron, consulting chemist of the bureau and expert on potash matters; and Hoyt S. Gale, of the Geological Survey, another expert on potash.

Lawall: he is the only A.I.M.E. member also a university president, though several engineering colleges are headed by Institute members.
