H G. MOULTON should not be confused with the famous economist of the same name. Our H. G. stands for Herbert George, whereas the chief of the Brookings Institution is Harold Glenn. Like most so- called New York members of the Institute's hoard, Mr. Moulton came from the West, in this case from Idaho where he was born, and Oregon, where he was educated at the University of Oregon. His early work included such jobs as mucker, assayer, smelter, chemist, mine surveyor, draftsman, engineer on surveys and construction, and assistant on mine examinations. In 1909 he was engaged as mining engineer by the firm of Eugene Meyer, Jr. S' Co., continuing with them for the next eight years.

After the solution of an iron ore, or metallic iron, in an acid, for the determination of phosphorus, it is necessary to evaporate the solution to dryness and to heat the residue to effect the complete separation of silica. Authorities differ as to the temperature required, some recormmentling not over 100' C., others as high as dull redness. For the purpose of securing some indications as to the degree of heat which may be safely or advantageously employed, I selected a gray pig-iron, a piece of Bessemer steel rail, and a sample of Ludington ore having the following composition; the phosphorus in the pig and steel being determined by Giutl's ferric chloride method:

In the maintenance of rubber-tired mining equipment, tires may well represent the single greatest problem. Using a 50-ton truck as an example, engine upkeep averages about 8% of the machine's total yearly operating cost, while tires average a whopping 20%. In fact, depending upon such factors as job layout, conditions, and whether it is maintenance or production people who run the job, tire costs can climb to as high as 50% of the truck's total operating expense. Similar costs apply to other earthmoving equipment such as tractor-scrapers and front end loaders. While operators must resign themselves to "normal" tire life and wear, there are many corrective steps that can be taken to fight the "abnormal."

CHARLES E. WILSON'S second quarterly report "Meeting Defense Goals" was encouraging on the outlook for the mining industry, as prolonged demand for minerals seems assured; but for the individual engineer things are not so rosy. Ten percent of the gross national product is going for defense but the gross national product has been increased by 9 pct since the national emergency was declared apparently a commendable rate of progress. The increased production does not seem to have had the stabilizing effect on prices it should and housewives have been revising domestic budgets upward on a quarterly basis. Government economists have reached the conclusion that more taxes and wage and salary freezing are necessary to counteract inflation.

The variety of copper-ore to which these notes refer is cornparatively rare, and, so far as I am aware, has not been recorded hitherto as occurring in Ontario. Moreover, the rocks of this locality differ so much in nature and mode of occurrence from the orebearing rocks of the western United States, that a description of them may be interesting. A line drawn upon a map of the region of the great lakes from the mouth of the Severn river at the Southern end of Georgian Bay, following the Canadian shore northwestward, and leaving Manitoulin island to the south, will describe the boundary between the Archaean rocks lying north of it and the Silurian rocks southward.

The evaluation of potential in situ copper leaching deposits requires a thorough examination of the geologic, mineralogic, hydrologic and physiological characteristics of the ore body. The decision to develop the deposit is made with these data along with leaching properties, estimated copper recovery, and economic analysis. A test blast followed by pilot leaching can a so be used for further evaluation and to reduce uncertainty regarding the deposit's potential. This report describes a number of ground characterization techniques that can be used to evaluate potential deposits. Field methods include geologic mapping, groundwater hydrology, core drilling, geophysical logs, permeability testing, and in-situ stress measurements while laboratory tests include assaying, mineralogy, leaching, rock physical properties, size analysis, and computer simulation.

Production of crude oil in the U.S.S.R. during 1940 is estimated at 222,600,000 bbl., as compared with the revised figure for the preceding year of 220,866,000 bbl., an increase of 0.79 per cent, and at least 20 per cent under the planned output. Baku district (Transcaucasus) remained the outstanding producing area, accounting for 72.33 per cent of the country's production, and this relative importance of the Apsheron Peninsula oil fields will probably continue lor many years to come. In the North Caucasus the Grozny-Dagestan area further extended its decline and the current production in this district amounts to only 6.06 Per cent Of the total U.S.S.R. output, as compared with 35.76 Per cent in 1931 The production of the Kuban-Maikop district remained virtually ullchanged from the preceding year, amounting to 7.64 per cent of the country's total. The Caucasian Province, therefore, in I940 produced 86.03 Per cent of the total production of the U.S.S.R. The promising new Permian Basin district, called Ural-Volga, and referred to sometimes as the "Second Baku," increased its production appreciably during 1940 and the output of that area amounted to 8.31 per cent of the country's total, as compared with 6.35 per cent during 1939. Production in the secondary districts of Russia continued unchanged though some new discoveries in the Emba salt-dome basin suggest that the output of that district may show some increase during the coming years. The drilling operations in Russia during 1940 reached a stage of virtual breakdown and the original footage plans were fulfilled only to the extent of around 50 per cent, while exploration drilling schedules were fulfilled only to the extent of about 25 to 35 per cent. This condition was due to the obvious lack of modern drilling rigs, of good drill pipe and of strong casing. Extended breakdowns occurred with deeper drilling, particularly because with few good drilling rigs available speed was being attempted with rotation rates that the inferior drill pipe and bits could not stand. Twistoffs and endless fishing jobs resulted. The difficulties became so serious a handicap to the Soviet oil industry that it was found imperative to order American drilling equipment and pipe in quantity, a policy that was never favored in the U.S.S.R because it requires expenditure of gold or exchange in major volume, and such exchange usually is reserved only to less bulky key items or to orders directly connected with armaments; also, oil-field machinery is very bulky and the prevailing lack of bottoms makes the transport of the indicated equipment a major problem. But little progress was similarly made in other branches of the Soviet oil industry. NO new major pipe-line construction work was undertaken, consequently the railroads continued to be overburdened with traffic that could be much more effectively handled by pipe lines. No new refinery construction of any magnitude was initiated, though several plants that had been in course of construction for several years were completed during 1940 and operation 554

McDuffie county, once a part of Columbia county, lies in the eastern part of central Georgia, about 20 miles west of the Savannah river, and bounded on the northtwest by Little river. Wrightsboro, now almost forgotten, was one of the principal towns of Georgia before the Revolutionary war, and much of the land hereafter described as belonging to one of the principal gold-bearing sections of the South had been taken up by the early agricultural settlers, and was already under cultivation. Indeed, some of the present mining companies can trace their chain of title back to the original grant of King George III., made in 1771. The first discovery of gold in Georgia, however, was not made until 1823, when two English miners, who had emigrated to this country and were traveling as peddlers through this section, discovered quartz, rich in gold, on what is now known as " the 40-acre lot," and owned by the Columbia Mining Go. These men had no money to buy the lands, and not being able to stake off a claim and begin work, as is the custom in other places, they were forced to seek the aid of the native farmers. In this we are told that they were for a long time unsuccessful; the farmers and land-owners not knowing or caring anything about gold mining. In 1826, Jeremiah Griffin, a wealthy farmer, became interested with them, and they did some prospecting and located several rich veins. Mr. Griffin soon became enthusiastic, and bought about three thousand acres of supposed gold-lands, lying along Little river.. This purchase was unfortunate for the mining industry, as it effectually shut out all other prospectors, and confined entirely to Mr. Griffin and his associates the mining development of the whole region. This YEAR BOOK, which is sent to every member, contains the roster of officers and the principal standing committees, brief summaries of the proceedings of the Annual Meeting and of the regional and divisional meetings, abstracts of papers published during-the-year, and a classified list of TECHNICAL PUBLICATIONS and CONTRIBUTIONS, as well as an index of all material published by the Institute in 1935 in these separate forms, in TRANSACTIONS and In MINING AND METALLURGY, the monthly magazine. The two volumes published for the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund are also represented by many items in the index. The necrology, which has appeared in the YEAR BOOK for two years past, will be pub¬lished in the. DIRECTORY, in the spring of 1936. Four volumes, 114 through 117, of the TRANSACTIONS are 1935 publications,-the subjects being, in the order named, Petroleum Development and Technology, Mining Geology, Iron and Steel, Founding and Metallography of Nonferrous Metals (Institute of Metals Division). The Mine Plant volume, which was authorized for publication by the Rocky Mountain Fund, and which was offered as an alternative to a TRANSACTIONS volume, was unavoidably delayed. It will, however, be published as a 1935 volume, and will be distributed as early as possible in 1936. The sixth volume in the A.I.M.E. Series, published under the auspices of the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund, is Coal through the Ages, by. Howard N. Eavenson; the seventh, Modern Uses of Nonferrous Metals,. which has twenty-two authors and was edited by Dr. C. H. Mathewson. Also, it was necessary in 1935 to have a second printing of the first Rocky Mountain Fund volumes, published in 1933-The Porphyry Coppers, and .Ore Deposits of the Western States (Lindgren Volume). The papers for the Iron and Steel and Institute of Metals Divisions have been issued as TECHNICAL PUBLICATIONS distributed under the binding Of METALS TECHNOLOGY in the months of January, February, April, June, August, September, October, December. This plan of distribution will be continued in 1936 for these two groups.

THERMAL conductivities of several samples of uranium and uranium alloys were determined using an apparatus previously described.' The value previously reported for uranium,' 0.035 cal per sec per cm per "C at 70°C, is in error due to the failure of a thermocouple during the determination on uranium. The defective thermocouple was detected after a reanalysis of the data obtained during the run and since has been replaced. Subsequently, runs on several samples of uranium show the thermal conductivity of uranium to be 0.069 cal per sec per cm per 'C at 70°C. The accuracy of the determinations was checked by measuring a sample of synthetic sapphire whose thermal conductivity was previously reported and found to be in agreement with other values."-" The values given in Table I are believed correct to % 3 pct or 0.003 cal per sec per cm per "C, whichever is larger. ZAY JEFFRIES, who has been awarded the Douglas medal, established in 1922 by a group of the friends of the late James Douglas for distin-guished achievement in non-ferrous metallurgy, is one of the most notable graduates of the South Dakota School of Mines where he took his B. S. degree in 1910. The following year he was manager of the Ideal Mining Co., at Custer, and in 1911 he became instructor in metallurgy at the Case School of Applied Science, Cleve-land, where he remained until 1917, and in 1918 he took his D. Sc. degree at Harvard. During all this period he was engaged in experi-mental and consulting work for the Electric Railway Improvement Co., t h e Cleveland Steel Tool Co., the W. S. Tyler Co., the Lincoln Electric Co., the Aluminum Castings Co., and the Cleveland wire di-vision of the General Elec-tric Co. He is now en-gaged in general consulting work, especially for the Aluminum Co. of America, the General Electric Co., and the National Tube Co. He has contributed to the Transactions papers on the determination of grain size in metals (with A. H. Kline and E. B. I HAVE previously shown you in the Fifth Book the process of making guns and gun carriages, together with other preparations and methods of moving them. If I now failed to show you more about them, it would be as if I had pointed out only the useless shadow of a thing, for I did not show the kinds and arrangement of their supplies or how the effects for which they are made are achieved. For these reasons I now wish to tell you, in addition to what I have already said, how saltpeter is made and the methods of refining it well; what it is and how without it guns and many effects of violent and artificial fires would have been discovered in vain. After this, I also wish to tell you the methods of compounding the powders for large and small guns, and finally how these are loaded and discharged. I also wish to tell you how mines are made, and fire tubes, [149v] fire pots, squibs, fireballs, rockets, shells, grapeshot, and other similar devices for shooting fire in order to bum ships, supplies, bridges, and ramparts, or, in offense, for firing on batteries. I also wish to teach you to make certain bronze balls for shooting, which carry fire and break in many pieces when they hit. For surely, besides being terrifying to the sight, they would be harmful to armies lined up in battle when they are fighting. Likewise, I wish, to enlighten you as to how artificial fires are made that last long and are difficult to extinguish. Since these are fine and useful things in wars, every captain and soldier should give them consideration and know how to use them when necessary. You will be pleased to have this information if for no other reason than that you can teach it to those who take delight in celebrating holidays with festivities and with fires.

The first edition of this book appeared in 1877 and approximately twenty years later (1898) the second and revised edition was published. Now, again after more than twenty years, comes the third edition. The changes involved in the present edition are chiefly those of addition, the general character and form of the book having been retained unchanged. In the section on Crystallography the important change consists in the introduction of the methods employed in the use of the stereographic and gnomonic pro¬jections. A considerable portion of the section on the Optical Characters of Minerals has been rewritten in the endeavor to make this portion of the book simpler and more readily understood by the student. In the section on Descriptive Mineralogy all species described since the previous edition have been briefly mentioned in their proper places. Numerous other changes and corrections have, of course, been made in order to embody the results of mineral investigation during the last two decades. Only minor changes have been made in the order of classification of the mineral species. It was felt that as this book is so closely related to the System of Mineralogy it was unwise to attempt any revision of the chemical classification until a new edition of that work should appear. The description of the methods of Crystal Drawing given in Appendix A has been largely rewritten. A new table has been added to Appendix B in which the minerals have been grouped into lists according to their important basic elements. Throughout the book the endeavor has been to present in a clear and concise way all the information needed by the elementary and advanced student of the science. The editor of this edition is indebted especially to the published and un¬published writings of the late Professor Samuel L. Penfield for much ma¬terial and many figures that have been used in the sections of Crystallog¬raphy and The Optical Character of Minerals. He also acknowledges the cordial support and constant assistance given him by Professor Edward S. Dana.

E. W. Parker, Washington, D. C.: In connection with Mr. Blauvelt's paper, a brief sketch of the development of by-product coke-making in the United States may prove of interest. The first radical departure from the prevalent beehive oven to the by-product retort oven was inaugurated in 1891 by the Solvay Process Company, at Syracuse, N. Y. In that year was begun the construction of 12 Semet-Solvay ovens, which were completed in 1893. During 1893 these ovens produced 12,850 tons of coke, an average.of a little over 1000 tons each. In the following year the production amounted to 16,500 tons, not quite 1400 tons per oven. These 12 ovens were in reality an experiment, the success of which was attested by the addition to the same plant of 13 more ovens, begun in 1895 and completed in 1896. They were followed by the construction in 1896 of 25 ovens of the same type at Sharon, Pa., and 50 more at Dunbar, Pa. These 100 ovens represented the total number of Semet-Solvay ovens completed and in operation up to the close of 1897. The construction of 180 more, however—120 at Ensley, Ala., and 60 at Benwood, near Wheeling, W. Va.—was begun in 1897. The plant for the latter is laid out for double the number stated. The 60 ovens begun in 1897 have now been completed. An initial plant of Otto-Hoffman ovens was built at Johnstown, Pa., in 1895, and began making coke in 1896. One hundred and twenty additional ovens of this type were begun in 1896 and completed in 1897 at Glassport, near McKeesport, Pa. During the present year 100 Otto-Hoffman ovens are being added to the plant at Johnstown, and 400 of the same type are in course of construction at Everett, near Boston, Mass. The plant at the latter place is laid out for a total of 1200 ovens.
