The furnace from which the brick here referred to were taken, was lined under my supervision and blown-in in May, 1902. It was 75 ft. high and 18 ft. in greatest diameter, and used coke to smelt a lean magnetic iron-ore. The lining was put in as follows:—First, blocks 14 in. long by 6 in. thick; second, 2 in. of loam; third, 13.5 in. of 9-in. fire-brick (one-and-ahalf brick wall) laid in English bond; fourth, red brick to within 2 in. of the iron shell; and fifth, 2 in. of slag-wool between the red brick and the shell. The brand of brick used has been known to me for over 20 years, and in my observation had always proved very durable, notably when used in a small furnace 50 k. high which treated the same magnetic. ore. On revisiting and examining the furnace in March, 1903, it was found that the whole of the lining of 14in. blocks at the top, and for an unknown distance (more than 20 ft.) below, had completely disappeared; and a few weeks later the 13.5-in. lining and the red brick at the top likewise vanished, and the furnace was blown out. N~twithstanding the complete failure of the lining higher up, measurements taken after blowing-out showed no unusual wear in the lower part of the furnace. The exact position in the furnace of the piece of brick-work used in the analysis, given below, is not known; but it came from between 30 and 40 ft. above the bottom. It had formed part of the 13.5-in. wall (no 14-in. brick remaining at that level) and consisted of parts of several bricks so firmly sintered together that fracture occurred indifferently through the joints and through the body of the brick. The joints could, however, be traced by a close examination. GRATON, Cambridge, Mass.:-It has been my privilege to read with some care Mr. Sales's paper, and I feel it a sense of duty and a pleasure to discuss it briefly. After two months spent underground in the Butte mines by my associates-Messrs. Augustus Locke, A. M. Bateman, and E. H. Perry-and myself, it seems only fair to record our appreciation of the almost baffling structural complexity of the Butte veins, of the remarkable accuracy with which their mechanical details have been worked out, and of the unusually effective and intelligent use of geologic conceptions in interpreting their subtler characters and significance. During this period, under the courteous and helpful guidance of either Mr. Sales, the members of his staff, or the geologists of other companies, we have been afforded opportunity to test many of the conclusions embodied in the present paper, and it is but just to state that as our observations have accumulated sufficiently the great majority of these conclusions have received unquestioned confirmation in our minds. The pleasure consists in realization that the science of mining geology, to which so many of us have devoted ourselves, actually embraces the possibilities that this paper exhibits. The science of geology has been favored by many brilliant contributions of general nature, and by a smaller number of studies remarkable because of their detail and precision. I know, however, of no other piece of work like this, which, including Mr. Winchell's administration, virtually represents the combined results of over 15 years of work by a staff of trained geologists in a district which measures not much more from end to end than it now does from top to bottom. That this concentration of effort and observation has been required, and that it has been repaid by the results attained, are plentifully evident in Mr. Sales's paper. If one were inclined to doubt this after perusal of the text, surely he would be convinced by the maps and sections, several of which, I venture to say, are unapproached in detail and accuracy by anything attempted before.

Discussion of the paper of SIDNEY POWERS and ALFRED C. LANE, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 110, February, 1916, pp. 535 to 548. N. L. BOWEN, Washington, D. C. (communication to the Secretary*). -This detailed study and. complete demonstration of differentiation as a result of the sinking of crystals has a great general significance in petrogenesis. If this action can be demonstrated in an effusive body, even though a very thick one, how can one doubt its possibility in large intrusive bodies? The authors speak of the sinking of augite and the rising of plagioclase but I should consider that they should depend entirely on the former action to obtain their results. It is true that in my experiments, to which the authors refer, a floating of crystals was in one case obtained, viz., in the case of tridymite crystals, but it must be remembered that tridymite has an exceptionally low density. Plagioclase crystals, on the other hand, are of nearly the same density as basaltic liquid. Under magmatic conditions they might be a little heavier than the liquid or a little lighter, we do not know which, but the margin would be exceedingly small and any motion resulting, whether upward or downward, would be correspondingly small in the usual case. For this reason I should think that the sinking of pyroxene should be considered probably the sole factor in producing the observed result, for which purpose it appears to be entirely adequate. The measurements of grain have also a certain significance in this connection. In the experiments referred to a difference of grain was obtained in different parts of the charge, which was entirely independent of the rate of cooling but connected with the fact that a sinking crystal does not depend entirely upon diffusion for the collection of its material from the surrounding liquid. The crystals which sank a considerable distance were therefore exceptionally large. Now in the Cape Spencer flow the augite crystals are normally (top and bottom) somewhat smaller than the plagioclase crystals, but in the layer somewhat below the middle,

This paper treats only of the practicability of introducing a standard classification into the records of production and distribution of coal which we try to keep in the Bureau of Mines. From the point of view of gathering and analyzing statistics, the requirements of a satisfactory classification are that it shall be so definite as to eliminate the factor of arbitrary judgment, that it shall be reasonably simple and, finally, and most important, that it shall be understandable to the trade. In other words, to be woven in the statistical record it must be adapted to the raw material which flows in from the 7000-odd mines that produce the coal. The success of any scheme of classification, from the point of view of use, will depend largely on the degree to which it utilizes the accumulated experience of the trade and employs as far as may be possible the accepted trade designations. The experience of the Tidewater Coal Exchange during the war would be an excellent point of departure for a use classification of the coals of the Eastern Appalachians. Although the exchange long since passed out of existence, coal is still quoted and sold by the old pool numbers, and they have shown rather extraordinary vitality. Some years ago, in the Geological Survey, the experiment was tried of getting operators to classify their own coal by offering them a list of standard designations on the annual statistical questionnaire. The results were more amusing than informative. What with the confusion in terminology and the natural temptation to put one's best foot foremost, there was a general tendency to grade up the quality. Floods of semi-bituminous coal flowed in from many sources, millions of tons from districts where not a pound of that quality has ever been produced. The producers of semianthracite in Arkansas almost without exception would report their product as anthracite and their neighbors in the little Paris field, producing a fine blocky house coal averaging about 17 per cent, volatile, would say, "Our coal isn't anthracite; it's a semianthracite." Finally we discontinued the publication of those data as being more misleading than helpful.

IN 1920, for the first time, the U. S. Geological Survey employed aerial photography in constructing planimetric maps. Contours were added by aerial photography and cultural details corrected. From 1925 to 1929 photogrammetric plotting machines and instruments of foreign design appeared in America for use in constructing complete topographic maps. During this period the only American technique developed was the Brock process, carried out with great success by Aero Service Corp. of Philadelphia, a pioneer in the field of photogrammetry. Between the first and second world wars the Multiplex projector, the Aerocartigraph, and the Stereoplanigraph appeared. The Multiplex projector, most popular of the three, determines three-dimensional values with very high accuracy. Many refinements have been added year by year, and it is now possible to photograph vast areas in a very short time and produce planimetric, topographic, and geologic maps of great value at very low cost per acre as compared with all methods previously known and in use. Both on the ground and in the air, however, accurate results can be produced only with highly skilled personnel and costly scientific instruments and machines. As early as 1928 the writer collected from the U. S. Army Engineers all available formulas and data on photogrammetry and personally contracted a local project of 2800 acres to be surveyed from the air. From the 10,000-ft altitude required for scale the cameras, each equipped with 4-K filters, pierced a ground haze of about 5000 ft, achieving clear, de- finable photography. The result was so gratifying, and the continuing progress in this method of surveying and mapping so great, that in the matter of economy it can hardly be surpassed. Pocahontas Land Corp., for example, constantly refers to its complete file of aero prints, covering its entire ownership in West Virginia, Virginia, and Kentucky. Photostats are enlarged or reduced from these prints to match the scale of company maps, to which various features are then added.

The oil industry in Kentucky during the year 1937 shows some improvement over that of 1936, although not to as marked a degree as 1936 over 1935. Oil in Eastern Kentucky In eastern Kentucky more than 150 new inside wells were completed in the pools of Estill, Powell and Lee Counties. Also, a number of wells were completed to be used as intake wells in repressuring operations. Repressuring is proving more successful in this area than was expected, as the producing formation was the Corniferous limestone. However, when the repressuring work was started, cores taken of this formation showed that the oil in the second and third pays was from a true sand, only the first pay in the top being a sandy lime formation. In the Weir sand fields of Magoffin, Johnson and Lawrence Counties, continued repressuring operations caused an increase in the quantity of oil. These operations and the completion of 20 new wells in the Maxon sand and the Big lime (Mississippian) in Martin and Floyd Counties produced an increase in the oil production from eastern Kentucky of 100,000 bbl. over that of 1936. As an illustration of what may yet be done in the fields of eastern Kentucky, one repressuring operation involving four oil wells and one pressure well produced an increase in production, or an additional recovery of 7200 bbl. of oil during the year. This amounts to a recovery of 2000 per acre for the 3.6 acres involved. In other fields of eastern Kentucky, as in the Corniferous pools of Estill, Powell and Lee Counties, increases in the runs are noted as follows: In the area of the Estill County pool from which the oil passes through the Revena pumping station, the production in 1935 was 88,175 bbl.; in 1936, was 102,849 bbl.; and in 1937 was 107,704 bbl. Mine roof fall characteristics of 250 falls in 5 different room-and-pillar coal mines, located in Pike, Martin, and Floyd counties, were investigated to determine the relationship of selected parameters associated with roof failure and the assumed condition of the mine roof before failure. The selected parameters used in the study included: presence of cracks and water before the occurrence of fall, sloughing of coal ribs, floor heave condition, type of roof support (resin or mechanical anchor bolts), distance to coal face, and time of occurrence of fall after initial coal extraction. In addition, research hypotheses, utilizing multiple linear regression techniques, were generated to test the relationship among the selected parameters and mine roof condition. The results indicated that the vast majority of falls portrayed some presence of water before the actual fall, occurred in less than 30 weeks after initial coal excavation, located usually greater than 30 meters from nearest coal face, gave evidence of cracks in mine roof before occurrence of fall, generally portrayed a good roof condition before the fall, showed presence of sloughing of coal ribs, and gave no occurrence of floor heave before occurrence of fall. In terms of the characteristics of the original support systems in the mine roof falls studied, most roofs were either supported by mechanical-anchor bolts or resin or full-column bolts; very rarely did the roof appear to fail if supported by posts or cribs. A detail inspection of the hypothesis and model comparison results gave supporting evidence that the condition of the roof is not dependent on the usual indicators of potential failure, such as presence of cracks and moisture. In fact, in most cases of mine roof failure, the immediate roof condition was rated as good or better, which gives little or no indication of pending failure and collapse. Hence, a combination of factors that are not easily accessible to measurement, are the dominant factors in the determination of roof fall-potential areas.

In many of the bituminous-coal districts of this country, more than one seam of workable coal exists, and in most cases the lower seam is the more attractive, owing to either its greater thickness or its superior quality. Apprehension that the mining of a seam will destroy the availability of all overlying seams has hindered the development of many fields and has led to the unprofitable working of certain seams in order to save them from an expected total loss. The U. S. Coal & Coke Co., Gary, W. Va., was the first operator in the Pocahontas field to mine the No. 4 seam extensively, which occurs about 80 ft. above No. 3, the scam that was worked first. This was due to the fact that over large areas the upper seam was the only one of workable thickness, at that time. In two places, both seams were workable in the same area, the No. 4 being thinner and containing more impurities than No. 3 seam. In mining these areas, an attempt was made to keep the workings in the upper seam in advance of those in the lower one, and no pillar robbing was done in No. 3 seam until after pillars in that part of the upper seam directly over it had been mined. This resulted in an excessive development in the lower seam, with large areas of finished rooms and standing pillars. The top fell badly, and after a couple of years the falls became so heavy that pillar drawing was unduly expensive. To overcome this obstacle and allow No. 3 seam to be worked in some territory where No. 4 was thick, but too dirty for present use, a study was made of operating methods applied to superimposed seams in Pennsylvania and Maryland. This was started more than seven yean ago by the writer; his data, supplemented by more recent information gathered by his associates, and by two cases mentioned in recent foreign publications, form the basis of this paper. The value of the earth resistivity method in groundwater studies in Illinois has long been recognized. Owing to the sharp electrical contrasts between sand and gravel deposits and glacial till, alluvial silt or underlying shale, much of the earth resistivity prospecting has been of a relatively elementary nature and has been highly successful. Approximately 90 pct of earth resistivity interpretations by the State Geological Survey have been accurate for practical purposes. Four studies involving fairly simple geologic situations are presented in this paper as typical cases. FOR the past 20 years electrical earth resistivity exploration has been used in Illinois in many phases of study undertaken by the State Geological Survey, chiefly in locating and outlining deposits of water-bearing sand and gravel from which to obtain ground water for municipal and industrial supplies. At least 43 municipalities in the state derive their total water supply from deposits of sand and gravel discovered by resistivity methods. These deposits occur in both Quaternary and preglacial valleys and within much of the glacial drift which covers a large portion of the state. In recent years there has been much demand from rapidly growing municipalities for help from the Illinois Geological Survey to extend existing well fields. Water supplies for many and varied industries constitute a considerable portion of the Survey's studies. The diminishing need of water supplies for railroads has 'been accompanied by an increasing demand by the oil industry for water for secondary recovery programs. The instruments used by the Illinois Geological Survey follow closely the commutated direct current circuits developed by O. H. Gish and W. J. Rooney' using the Wenner2 electrode configuration. More recently replacement of the hand-driven commutator by a synchronous vibrator has led to increased ease of operation and accuracy. Continuing improvement of equipment and technique has led to many changes in the instruments, but the operating theory remains the same. In the field operation at a selected station, four electrodes are set at equal distances in the ground 6 to 10 in. deep, in a straight line. A 16 to 20-cycle current is applied to the two outside steel electrodes

ALTHOUGH Mexico still ranks second in importance as produce for petroleum, the output in 1924 was 7 ½ per cent. less than in 1923 and 30 per cent. less than the peak production of 1921. The decrease may be partly accounted for by labor troubles and revolutionary activities early in the year, although undoubtedly the main factor was the continuous rise of the salt-water level in the South Fields, causing a decline of 24,000,000 bbl. in the production of light oil. Since the middle of 1923, the production of heavy crude has been greater than that of the lighter grade and, in 1924, the output of heavy crude was 2 ½ times that-of the light oil. DEVELOPMENT Drilling operations in the Mexican fields were probably more active in 1924 than in any other year, the greatest activity taking place in the Cacalilao and neighboring fields; toward the end of the year there was an added number of wells drilling in wildcat areas. The number of wells drilled in proved territory was almost twice that of the previous year, the increase taking place in the heavy-oil fields north of Panuco, as only 78 of the 710 wells completed were drilled in the Southern Fields. The percentage of successful completions decreased from 45 per cent., during 1923, to about 38 per cent., during 1924; there was also a noticeable decrease in the average flush production of the new wells. It is interesting to note that notwithstanding the increased drilling activity, the total production declined over 10,000,000 barrels. In the heavy-oil district, 632 wells were completed but only 231, or 36 ½ per cent., were commercially productive. The develop-ment in the Cacalilao area reached its peak in April and May, or about the time the first serious salt-water encroachments took place. Development in the old Panuco and Topila fields was more active than during the previous year, although the salt-water level continued to rise, the high price of crude making such development advisable especially for companies having to protect large-investments.

Although wildcatting was hampered by the general overproduction and low price of crude, several developments, worthy of note in the history of the petroleum industry in the Rocky Mountain region, were made in 1927. This district records production from six new fields, two of these having been heretofore productive of gas. Deeper pay horizons were found in two other oil fields. In order to facilitate transportation from fields, six new oil pipe lines were completed or in the course of construction at the end of the year, and one line is proposed for 1928. Four gas lines were completed, one was under construction, and one was proposed for 1928. The total production in 1927 in the Rocky Mountain district was 29,591,379 bbl.,' a decrease of 7,771,991 bbl., or 21 per cent., fro111 the previous year. This was occasioned by natural decline and the general curtailment of production and drilling. A review of the development by states follows. Colorado Production from horizons in the Morrison and Sundance at Craig and at Ilrs Dome, and the bringing in of the deepest producing well in the Rocky Mountain district on North McCalluin anticline (Waltlrn) in Jackson County are the outstanding developments for the year in Colorado. In March the Midwest Refining Co.'s Parkinson 21 SD, SW SE, Sec. 22 T p. 4 N R 92 W, Iles Domr, Moffat County Colorado, found gas in sands in the Morrison estimated at 15,000,000 cu. ft., and at 3242 ft. an oil sand was encountered in the Sundance. Initial production from this horizon was 2575 bbl. in this well. This structure previously was only productive of water in the sands of the Dakota group but has been producing shale oil from horizons in the Benton. The second well completed by the Midwest Refining Co., No. 18 SD in Sec. 23 was also productive of gas in the Morrison and made an initial of 300 bbl. from sands in the Sundance. By the end of the year three other wells wrrc nearing the completion stage but none of them indicate that they will be as big producers as the discovery. To date the productive area has

Frequent reference has been made to the increased domestic gasoline demand recorded for 1931. This increase was in the neighborhood of 7,000,000 bbl. Although smaller relatively than that to which the oil industry had become accustomed by virtue of the experience of preceding years, the increase was of substantial amount, particularly at a time when any increase at all could be regarded with eminent satisfaction. Less has been said, however, of the 18,000,000 bbl. decline in gasoline shipments to territories and foreign countries. When the loss of business outside the United States is combined with the domestic increase, there results a net loss of some 11,000,000 bbl. in total gasoline demand. The gain of 2 per cent in domestic sales gives way to a loss of 2.5 per cent in total domestic and foreign sales. The United States actually has been losing ground in the international gasoline market since 1924, when shipments from this country equaled 72 per cent of the gasoline shipments from the leading gasoline-producing countries of the world. A loss in relative standing was recorded with each succeeding year. As long, however, as gasoline shipments showed an actual increase, the loss in relative standing was of little concern. Foreign producing centers annually supplied an increasing share of the foreign gasoline markets, but, until the past year, the demand abroad continued to increase at a pace which could accommodate all of the increased output of foreign plants and yet require increasing quantities from the United States. It was not until 1931 that the various factors were combined so as to produce an actual and substantial decrease in the foreign demand for United States gasoline. Consumption in foreign countries generally declined, while the output of foreign refineries and the foreign manufacture of substitute fuels continued to increase. From our own viewpoint, this meant a loss of some 18,000,000 bbl. of gasoline business in foreign countries, one-half of it probably due to the lowering in foreign demand and the other half to the increased output of foreign refineries and the increased utilization of substitute fuels.

(communication to the Secretary*) :-No doubt there are as many different methods of starting a blast-furnace as there are men who assume that responsibility. Having blown-in a furnace a few years ago in a manner similar to that outlined by Mr. Sweetser, things went along so well at the start that I had time for a little reflection on what was going on inside the furnace. I saw the wood turned to charcoal practically, and it occurred to me, why should I use wood when I could put in the charcoal in the. first place, and thus save a lot of time, and also eliminate the dangerous gas from the wood, which is the cause of most of the accidents in starting up a furnace. I had a furnace out for repairs and decided to use no cord-wood in blowing in. I put in about a carload of charcoal and used no wood except some shavings and oily waste at each of the tuyeres. The furnace had 16 tuyeres and was 100 by 22 by 14.5 ft. Hot rods were put in each tuyere' and the blast started immediately at 11 a.m. Within 5 mill. the air was all driven out of the stack and the gas lighted of its own. accord at the top of the furnace. It was allowed to burn for 5 min. longer and then the bell was closed and the gas taken to the last stove and the last boiler on the gas-main. It was all clone so quietly that it was hard to realize that the gas was down. The tuyeres were as bright as if the furnace had been in blast for a long time. I have learned since that others have used the same method, but they had not passed the good advice along.

The cables brought the news last spring that the Institute had lost by death one of its most distinguished foreign members, Hjalmar Sjogren of Stockholm. For thirty-one years, Professor Sjogren had been one of our number. He was elected in 1891, joining the Institute at the time he was in the United States, in attendance at the Fifth International Geological Congress, which was held in Washington in the late summer of that year. Professor Sjogren was once more in America in 1906 and again in 1913, and on both of those visits his friends in New York had the welcome opportunity of extending courtesies to him. He was thus well known to a wide circle in our membership. His keen interest in the geology of iron ores brought him in touch with the many Americans who have studied them and who have been active in the important productive districts which he visited. Our Transactions contain (Vol. XXXVIII) one very important paper of seventy pages on the Geological Relations of the Scandinavian Iron Ores, which he contributed. Sten Anders Hjalmar Sjogren, to give his full baptismal name, was born June 13, 1856, and was the son of Anton Sjogren, a mining engineer, at the time in charge of the iron mines at Persberg, in the east and west iron-ore belt of central Sweden, about 160 miles west from Stockholm. The Persberg orebodies yielded magnetite and specular hematite from schists, with which limestones. were interstratified as well as the peculiar Swedish rocks called "halleflinte." The mines were also well known to collectors and students of minerals. While Hjalmar Sjogren was yet a lad, his father was advanced to the superintendency of a number of famous mining localities in this same district of Wermland. Paisberg, famous for its native lead, was one; and two others, Langban and Nordmarken, were among the most prolific sources of interesting minerals in all Sweden. In several localities, the pre-Cambrian limestones had obviously experienced the recrystallizing influences of intrusive igneous rocks and had been charged with the so-called "contact" minerals, which have found their way to the museums of the world. Anton Sjogren, the father, was a keen mineralogist and Hjalmar, the son, grew up in a favorable environment for receiving training and enthusiasms of the same sort. One is not surprised, therefore, to find Hjalmar Sjogren, in the long run, turning to mineralogy and geology as his final career.

CARL HENRICH (communication to the Secretary*).-I have read with much interest the discussions of my paper by Messrs. A. S. Dwight, E. P. Mathewson, Win. B. Boggs, Jos. W. Richards, and W. C. Smith. Mr. Dwight's acknowledgment that he always-in lead smelting¬obtained better results by figuring A1203 as an acid in his slags, I may take as a confirmation of my views, notwithstanding his later conversion by, the late T. S. Austin to the latter's empirical view and way of neglecting the consideration of A1203 altogether in the composition of slags-letting the slags "dissolve" in Al203. I have a strong suspicion that Mr. Austin, in a large custom smelting plant at El Paso, has been able to keep the alumina percentage of his slags sufficiently low, not to give him much trouble, although I have also a suspicion that his furnace foreman may have had a somewhat differing opinion of the practical working of the "dissolving" theory,, whenever its applicability was tested to its limits. That Austin should have conceived the notion that the Ca of CaF2 would enter into a slag as CaO, seems hardly in accord with the recognized ability of that late metallurgist. It is a well-recognized fact that even small amounts of CaF2 will reduce the viscosity of a slag; but I did not think anyone ever had an idea that CaF2, in some mysterious way, parted with its F and coupled itself with 0 to satisfy a craving for CaO on the part of 802-least of all in a lead furnace. The "dissolving" theory for CaF2 was doubtless appropriate, and an improvement on figuring the Ca of CaF2 as CaO to satisfy the demand of Si02 for RO bases. However, I cannot understand the rationality of extending this "dissolving" theory to A1203 and to ZnO. It would be interesting to have more specific data from Mr. Mathewson in regard to the actual composition-analyses-of the slags made, when he had these unusually high alumina slags in Colorado. We "old" smelters all know that within certain limits, usually found out by rather tough experience, we could safely "disregard" A1203. SODIUM sulfite as a zinc retarding agent in the selective flotation of complex lead-zinc sulfide ores was discovered by the writer in the summer of 1919 in the testing laboratory of the U. S. Smelting, Refining & Mining Co.'s gravity concentrator at Midvale, Utah. It proved to be the first reagent to give consistently good results in the laboratory on the company's Bingham ore. In December, 1919, C. A. Lemke, concentrator superintendent, recommended that a flotation unit be added to the existing gravity mill to handle the mill slimes, using sodium sulfite as the zinc depressant. Owing to the poor lead and zinc markets and the unfavorable royalty schedules offered by the Minerals Separation Co., the project fell through at this time. In 1921, a number of laboratory tests were made at Midvale on other ores, among them ore from the Sunnyside mine at Eureka, Colo. Both sodium and calcium sulfites were used with success on this ore. Early in 1923, further tests were made at Eureka, shortly after the Sunnyside company had resumed operations after a two-year shutdown. As a consequence sodium sulfite was given a trial in the mill. The results showed sufficient improvement over previous work as to warrant continuous use of this reagent in the lead circuit. Except for a week or so in 1926 and for several weeks in April, 1927, when sodium cyanide and zinc sulfate were given trial runs in this mill, sodium sulfite has been used ever since. Sodium sulfite was chosen rather than the calcium sulfite because of its greater solubility, making it possible to introduce the reagent as a solution. This solution is introduced into the Marcy ball mills along with the original feed of ore. The consumption of sodium sulfite in the Sunnyside mill varies from ¼ to ½ lb. per ton of ore, the smaller amount probably being nearer the average. In February, 1924, laboratory work at Midvale demonstrated conclusively that good results could be obtained on the company's Bingham ore and on most of the custom ores tested by using sodium sulfite as the zinc depressant, xanthate as the lead enhancer in the lead circuit, followed by copper sulfate and additional xanthate to float the zinc. THERE has been so much misinformation sent out through the newspapers, and I find so few people who are really acquainted with the true facts in regard to the coal strike, that I feel it would be advan-tageous to present the facts as I have been able to gather them. One of the great points that the miners are now mak-ing is the fact that the operators of the central competi-tive field, consisting of the states of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania, have refused to meet them in a joint conference such as has been customary in previous years. There are two reasons why the operators de-clined to hold such a meeting. In the first place, the last time they held a meeting of this kind they were all indicted under the Sherman Act for making an agree-ment in restraint of trade. In the second place, the miners at their convention did not authorize their dele-gates to negotiate a new contract, but instructed them that nothing less than a scale based on the present wage, with the addition that there should be a six-hour day, a five-clay week, time j and a half for over time, and double time for Sundays, would be accepted. These additions would very much increase the cost of coal over the present wage scale. The operators could not consider renewing a contract on the present scale, as it would mean ruin for them, and as the miners were not authorized to negotiate a new scale on a fair basis that would enable the operators to mine coal in competi¬tion, with the open-shop mines the operators did not feel that there was any use in meeting the delegates. Thirty per cent. of the output of bituminous coal comes from the open-shop mines of West Virginia, Alabama and Pennsylvania. During the strike, in 1919, this 30 per cent. was increased to 50 per cent. and it has affected the operations of the union mines to such an extent this year that they have been able to run only 15 to 30 per cent. of their time, while the open shop mines have run from 60 to 80 per cent. as the wages in these mines had been reduced to the 1917 scale.

The cables brought the news last spring that the Institute had lost by death one of its most distinguished foreign members, Hjalmar Sjogren of Stockholm. For thirty-one years, Professor Sjogren had been one of our number. He was elected in 1891, joining the Institute at the time he was in the United States, in attendance at the Fifth International Geological Congress, which was held in Washington in the late summer of that year. Professor Sjogren was once more in America in 1906 and again in 1913, and on both of those visits his friends in New York had the welcome opportunity of extending courtesies to him. He was thus well known to a wide circle in our membership. His keen interest in the geology of iron ores brought him in touch with the many Americans who have studied them and who have been active in the important productive districts which he visited. Our Transactions contain (Vol. XXXVIII) one very important paper of seventy pages on the Geological Relations of the Scandinavian Iron Ores, which he contributed. Sten Anders Hjalmar Sjogren, to give his full baptismal name, was born June 13, 1856, and was the son of Anton Sjogren, a mining engineer, at the time in charge of the iron mines at Persberg, in the east and west iron-ore belt of central Sweden, about 160 miles west from Stockholm. The Persberg orebodies yielded magnetite and specular hematite from schists, with which limestones. were interstratified as well as the peculiar Swedish rocks called "halleflinte." The mines were also well known to collectors and students of minerals. While Hjalmar Sjogren was yet a lad, his father was advanced to the superintendency of a number of famous mining localities in this same district of Wermland. Paisberg, famous for its native lead, was one; and two others, Langban and Nordmarken, were among the most prolific sources of interesting minerals in all Sweden. In several localities, the pre-Cambrian limestones had obviously experienced the recrystallizing influences of intrusive igneous rocks and had been charged with the so-called "contact" minerals, which have found their way to the museums of the world. Anton Sjogren, the father, was a keen mineralogist and Hjalmar, the son, grew up in a favorable environment for receiving training and enthusiasms of the same sort. One is not surprised, therefore, to find Hjalmar Sjogren, in the long run, turning to mineralogy and geology as his final career.

LEDOUX).-If there ever was a question in the mind of anybody as to whether there are some mining engineers, I think if they would look in the door tonight they would decide there are. We meet here tonight not only to enjoy a smoke and other incidentals which are permitted us in these days, but with a more serious thought in our minds, because that flag, with its 540 stars, only begins to show the number of our membership that are serving the country. We are thinking of them, and when we consider how many of those men are also citizens of one or another of our allied countries, we can imagine that many are tonight thinking of us and perhaps have received, even at the front, notices of our annual meeting and are wondering what we are doing tonight; so our thought this evening will be going out to them, going out to those of our number who are serving in the khaki or in the blue, or in other activities denied to some of us for one reason or another; but, gentlemen, there is one thing we will do now, we will rise and sing together r the Star Spangled Banner. Gentlemen, not only are American citizens here tonight, not only representatives of our country on the Speakers' platform, but. there are representatives of our Allies, and we are going to have the privilege of listening to one or two of the latter, a citizen of the great British Empire and a citizen of France. We will first have the pleasure of hearing Capt. Hodder-Williams. He has been loaned to us to take charge of training Columbia University students, after two years or more in the trenches, and lie carries with him the only German thing in this room, a German bullet in his shoulder.
