Discussion of the paper of Willis T. Burns, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 80, August, 1913, pp. 2011 to 2049. PROF. JOSEPH W. RICHARDS, South Bethlehem, Pa.:-I think Mr. Burns spoke of two unusual conditions which he has at his plant, namely, that he uses directly converter anodes and very high current density. He did not mention another condition : the very low cost of power, which circumstance, I believe, is responsible for some of the peculiarities of his plant noticed by us from the East. I am struck by the rather low ampere efficiency which Mr. Burns obtains, and in looking over the plant thought that there was a considerable leakage from one tank to the other, and that the ampere efficiency could be increased by looking after the leakage of electricity front one tank to the other.

The unit-train for moving mineral raw materials is considered by many railroad men as the most significant contribution toward reducing rail freight costs since the introduction of the diesel locomotive. The idea, which involves assigning railroad equipment to only one haul and keeping the equipment rolling, results in the maximum utilization of equipment. For example, before the unit train was placed in service on coal hauled to one of Mid-Continent Coal and Coke Company's customers, about 900 cars and 9 locomotives were needed to move its coal requirements, compared with 250 cars and 6 locomotives currently used. If unit-train economics are to be achieved, coal companies cannot use railroad cars as small storage bins on wheels to accumulate their coal in train-load shipments, instead, these companies must build large bins which incorporate facilities for the rapid loading of railroad cars in a minimum length of time.

Starting in 1940, national prize-paper contests for Student Associates and members of Student Chapters of the Institute have been conducted by a Sub- committee of the Committee on Student Relations Five cash prizes of $100 each may be given annually To be eligible for the national contest, a paper must have been the prize winner in a preliminary contest conducted by a Local Section of the Institute The money for the national prizes is drawn from the corpus of a special fund begun in 1940 by a contribution of $2,500 made by D C Jackling, and to which others have made substantial contributions since that time Contributions to the fund from members who are interested will be welcome since the original contributions are about exhausted A special committee, headed by Donald H McLaughlin, was appointed in 1952 to obtain further funds

MISSOURI SCHOOL OF MINES The Missouri Mining Association has enjoyed a very good year. Last October the society was reorganized and the following officers elected for the year: E. Ross HOUSHOLDER, President, ORE N. MANESS, Vice-president, WILLIAM REBER. Secretary, RUAL CHAVEZ, Treasurer. The head of our mining department, Prof. C. E. Forbes, is now serving as a Major in the United States. Army. We were fortunate in having. Prof. Chas. E. Locke, of Boston, with us for part of the winter to take charge of the senior mining work. During the autumn and winter months we had a number of informal smoker lectures in Norwood Hall. Among the speakers at these meetings were: H. A. Buehler, Missouri State Geologist; Chas. E. Locke, Boston, Mass.; V. H. Hughes, Tulsa, Okla.; Dorsey Lyon, Washington; D. C.; Prof. G. H. Cox, Professor of Geology, Rolla, Mo.; together with a number of returned alumni.

“The mining industry can do more to alleviate world poverty, hunger and human misery, more to close the widening gap between advanced and developing nations and more to achieve international peace and understanding than any other single force in the world," Charles W. Court, Minister for Industrial Development, Western Australia, told the American Mining Congress audience at the opening session of the 1969 Mining Convention, October 19-22, San Francisco. Australia, he pointed out, is a shining example. In 1971, 60% of U.S. mining investment overseas will go to Australia and other parts of Oceania, an increase of 42% over a year ago. Australia has capitalized on world needs, its own rich resources and good investment climate. Developing nations can and should do the same, but they mix emotion with nationalism, often frightening away foreign investment which could breathe life into dormant and backward areas, said Court.

South Bethlehem, Pa. :-In looking at these precipitating launders the idea has come to me that the iron could probably be kept much cleaner if there were laid on the bottom of the . launders some sheet copper, with which the iron would be in contact, and as the solution passed over the tendency would he to precipitate the copper on the sheet copper and thus keep the iron cleaner than it is under present conditions. As soon as a piece of iron becomes coated with copper, its surface becomes inactive, and the presence of a sheet of copper in electrical contact with the iron would tend to precipitate the copper on the sheet copper and to keep the iron clean.

A special meeting of the Board of Directors was held on July 25, 1916, pursuant to notice duly given according to the By-Laws. This special meeting was for the purpose of giving authority for the signing of a contract with the American Society of Civil Engineers, as mentioned in another place in this Bulletin. The interest in the matter is indicated by the attendance of 11 members of the Board, some of whom came from a long distance. An invitation was received from the St. Louis Section of the Institute and from members in and near St. Louis to hold the 115th Meeting of the Institute in and near St. Louis in late September or early October, 1917. This invitation was accepted. Announcement was made that the Mexican Institute of Mining and Metallurgy had been dissolved and reorganized as the Mexican Section of the Institute.

HAVING taught you to make aqua fortis and to cleanse and reduce it to perfection, before I teach you the work of parting on a large scale, I wish now to teach you how to make an assay of the amount of gold present in a quantity of silver, so that you may proceed to your work with open eyes in order to become aware of mistakes when you have erred yourself or have been deceived by someone else. Therefore it is necessary to know very exactly, before you take it out, how much gold should be in your cucurbits from the weight of the silver that you put in. Thus you may see the gain or loss, if you had to deliver it to someone else or if you had bought it. If you did not do this you would proceed blindly in your work.

Although the role of slope stability has not changed, there have been changes in the mining industry which affect the geotechnician engaged in slope stability studies. The deposits currently being mined or evaluated are technically difficult , capital intensive, and economically marginal. In addition, many mining companies are now either controlled by oil companies or are financing projects through bank loans. The mining investor or decision maker is, therefore, often more sophisticated financially, but less sophisticated in mining terms. The impact of these changes will be to force the geo- technician and mining engineer to attempt to quantify risk and financial implications of a slope design. In conclusion, this paper outlines several questions which mining engineers should be asking those engaged in geotechnical studies and indicates the necessity for the mining engineer and geotechnician to work together and quantify the financial risk associated with a geotechnical design.

E. Schumacher.*—Mr. Smith has shown us once again how variable lead alloys can be. I have studied lead alloys for a good many years and know from experience that their behavior cannot be predicted by analogy with other alloys. I have always been interested in observing how the creep resistance of lead may be improved by the addition of as little as 0.03 per cent Ca. Without the presence of calcium the grains of extruded lead pipe are fairly equiaxed and motion can take place easily at the boundaries. The calcium addition of 0.03 per cent causes the grain boundaries to become very irregular and jagged, and results in creep resistance many times greater than that of pure lead. Mr. Smith showed that in the one per cent antimony-lead alloy creep is occasionally excessive even where low stresses are involved. We have observed this phenomenon many

(Read at the Amenia Meeting, October, 1877.) THE existence of iron ore and anthracite coal in the neighborhood of Providence, R. I., has long been known, chiefly as a geological fact; that these materials, so near to each other and to tidewater, are of such a good quality and are present in such large quantity, as to have seriously raised the question of establishing blast furnaces there, was a surprising fact to me; and I have thought that the few notes I have lately gathered on the subject would be of interest at this partly New England meeting. The coal field referred to has an area of above 400 square miles, and is found throughout the belt of transition rocks extending from Newport Neck to Mansfield, Massachusetts. The United States is rapidly approaching an acute shortage of minerals. According to some observers, this situation may even be more severe than the energy crisis because the US consumes nearly 30% of the world's mineral production. With the mounting competition for world mineral supplies, we can no longer take for granted that foreign mineral products will be available to the US as abundantly as in the past. In 1973, US consumption of mineral raw materials was $35 billion. Of this, $7 billion consisted of imports. Without a drastic reorientation towards the mining of domestic mineral resources, the 1973 $7 billion deficit might mushroom to $100 billion by the year 2000. Thus, a return to domestic sources of raw materials will become absolutely necessary-and will be bucking the trend of the past 25 years, characterized by capital investment for growth in multinational overseas mining operations.

Florida is blessed with some of the worlds greatest phosphate rock deposits, and doubly blessed in that those deposits are uraniferous. Until recently, the uranium con¬tained in phosphate rock had been ignored, but spot mar¬ket prices in the $40-per-pound range have spurred actions which will soon transform the state into a major uranium supplier. In 1978, two plants in Florida and one in Louisiana went it on- stream to recover uranium oxide from phosphoric acid, and construction began on three other extraction facilities. Together, these six plants will be cap¬able of recovering 1940 t/y (2140 stpy) of yellow cake from Florida phosphate in the early 1980s, equivalent to 15% of the projected US requirement. By the year 2000, Florida phosphates will have produced a projected 49 000 tons (54,000 st) of uranium oxide to fuel the nation's nuclear reactors.

At the SME Fall Meeting held in Phoenix, Ariz. last October, Ernest P. Hall, addressing an Air and Water Pollution session, noted that water pollution caused by acid drainage from bituminous coal measures had begun long before recorded history. "Until recently," he said, "man did not begin to understand the physical phenomena which took place to cause [it] and even today he does not know what can be done to prevent it." CAUSES "It is known from the reports of early explorers that drainage from bituminous coal measures was causing water pollution before coal mines were opened on this continent. They noted the nature of the polluted water in the runs and creeks and predicted the presence of substantial deposits of coal based on the appearance and character of the water. Even today, polluted water drains from virgin coal areas which have not been touched by mining machines," Mr. Hall said.

Maintenance costs comprise a large portion of total operating cost, 30% to 60% of the operating cost dollar not being unusual. Thus even a relatively small percentage reduction in this cost would represent a sizable increase to mining profitability. Mine and mill maintenance management is a complex problem. An effective maintenance manager must study the experiences of the past and make decisions based on that experience. Data Processing equipment-more specifically, the computer-can be an effective and economical tool to simplify the job of maintenance record-keeping and to aid in the formulation of many accurate and timely management reports. These reports will enable improved control to be established over day-to-day practices; permit comparisons of unit and component performance; spotlight inefficient maintenance practices; and further, better, more efficient cost control. The net result can be increased profits through reduction of operating costs.

WHEN Agassiz and his party of geologists commenced their exploration of the interior of Brazil and the Amazon region, one of the first and, to the last, one of the most novel and striking phenomena which met them everywhere was the great depth of decomposed or partially decayed rock in situ, which mantles, and for the most part conceals, the underlying strata. The same facts strike all geological observers from the North who happen to penetrate the middle and southern latitudes of the Atlantic States. In North Carolina, e. g., the entire middle and western regions, outside of the Quaternary clays, sands, and gravels of the East,-that is, all that portion of the State occupied by the Arch can and Mesozoic rocks,-show everywhere this peculiarity, so new to those accustomed to glaciated surfaces. Three years ago, when Sun Energy Development Co. (Sunedo) dedicated its Cordero mine in Wyoming, the company noted that its decision to venture into the coal industry was prompted by the need for domestic energy self-sufficiency. Now, as the energy situation assumes crisis proportions and the cry For coal intensifies, Sunedoo has begun a $21 million expansion program that will double the mine's productive capacity by the mid-1980s. When the Cordero come was originally conceived, Sunedoo obtained permission from permitting authorities to produce up to 11 million t/y (12 million stpy) of coal. But seeing opportunities in the coal market, Sunedoo returned to the agencies in 1976 and came away with permission to produce 22 million t/y (24 million stpy). Of that total permitted capacity, Cordero is expected to produce about 3.6 million tons (4 million st) this year.

In the Kaernthner Zeitschrift, No. 2, 1881, p. 53, et seq., Prof. Ledebur details some experiments on the power of various silicates of lime and alumina, magnesia and alumina, and lime, magnesia and alumina, to remove sulphur from pig-iron, from which it appears (as has long been recognized in practice) that the more basic the silicate the greater the quantity of sulphur it will take up; but also that for the same grade of silicate, this quantity is greatest for the lime-alumina silicate and least for the magnesia-alumina silicate, the lime-magnesia-alumina silicate occupying an intermediate position, and he concluded therefrom (p. 59) that, for the production of pig-iron low in sulphur, pure limestones are to be preferred to those containing magnesia.
