In one of the largest dredging projects of its kind, Lake Asbestos of Quebec Ltd. is stripping overlying mud and sand from the bed of a lake to reach asbestos orebodies 70 to 200 ft below surface. Black Lake, about two miles long by half a mile wide, was almost overlooked in the search for asbestos in Quebec's ore-rich eastern townships-a search that has been underway there ever since the first asbestos was mined in 1877. Not until 1948 was the Black Lake mineral discovered. Four years later careful exploration was carried out by American Smelting & Refining Co., parent firm of Lake Asbestos. The search involved more than 75,000 ft of diamond drilling and about 5000 ft of underground work. ASARCO, in its first asbestos mining project, decided to proceed with a dredging and draining program to prepare for open pit mining.

Of many physical parameters critical to design of grinding processes, impact of grinding media is among the most difficult to measure or predict. Yet impact of falling grinding balls, pebbles, or rods accomplishes the fine grinding essential to metallurgical recovery of most important minerals. Unfortunately, the same impacts that break ore fragments deform or crack grinding mill liners. A project was undertaken at Climax Molybdenum Company to measure impact forces in operating ball mills so that they might be used to calculate stresses in liner materials and be correlated with service performance of mill liner alloys. Towards that end, a method of measuring impact forces on ball mill liners using an instrumented grinding ball has been developed. Preliminary tests show that impact forces and contact stresses imposed on bare mill liners are quite high but are greatly reduced by cushioning when coarse ore particles are crushed between balls and liners.

SUMMARY The discussion focusses on developments in the debt/equity swap market since the Marte project was negotiated in early 1988. It emphasises carrying forward the recent market trends to anticipate the breadth and scope of debt/equity conversions for mine development in the 1990s. Secondary market prices of LDC paper, conversion values and political influences in the host countries and the use of near debt and commodity-based instruments as components of mine financing in debt/equity deals will be placed in the perspective of recent trends and expectations for the future. THE MARTE PROJECT The Marte mine is a gold porphyry deposit in Chile's high Atacama, for which financing was put together at the beginning of 1988. The Marte project was financed by a combination of common equity and loans. It was unusual that the equity infusions were made under different programs. Some of the international equity was infused with fresh funds via DL 600. Other common foreign equity was provided through the conversion of Chilean bank debt under Chapter XIX. On the loan side,. export credits for the import component of machinery and equipment were sought. Local bank financing was negotiated for the remainder of ' the project's anticipated cost. The debt conversion market in Chile was at its apex in terms of interest, activity and government support when the mine financing was arranged. The price of Chilean paper in the secondary market hovered about 62 to 66 cents per U.S. dollar of face value. Meanwhile, the Chilean government was negotiating conversion redemptions significantly closer to full face value. The government differentiated between debt paper exchanged for corporate investors who had sourced that paper in the secondary market, and debt paper held by bank investors who would incur a transaction loss in the conversion. The use of a combined DL 600lChapter XIX equity financing created different yield calculation bases for the various investors. Chapter XIX prevents remittance of profits before year 5 and capital repatriation before year 11. Investors choosing this vehicle have either for a corporate policy in the target project not to declare dividends until repatriation is allowed, or they have to seek uses for the peso liquidity that would be generated through dividend declarations in the early years. However, DL 600 investors face no such waiting period on dividends, nor do they have restrictions imposed on cashing out of the investment before the 11th year. Therefore, any equity structure with components of both investment mechanisms will have inherent differences in cost basis and future income flows for the various participants. This equity imbalance is defensible if the investment motivations of the parties are analyzed: a mining investor using fresh funds looks for a hurdle return on equity calculated at conservative commodity prices, with as much flexibility to reap upside benefits as possible; a mining investor choosing to invest through a debt conversion mechanism will realize a modest short term gain on the conversion, reducing his effective cost basis, but sacrificing some return because of the waiting period on repatriation of dividends. INVESTMENT OBJECTIVES A bank investor exchanging his own paper for an equity participation in a mining project realizes a conversion loss on the transaction. He seeks a risk adjusted acceptable hurdle rate of return to recoup that loss over time. Motivation for the bank investor to take that loss may be derived partly from a strategy to diversify its existing portfolio by internal policy and externally regulated guidelines. The bank will compare yields on its loan portfolio to that country with anticipated dividend flows discounted back at a risk adjusted rate. The tetnperature-conposition phase diagram of the syste,n MnS-CdS has been investigated over a range fro)n 600° to 1000° C. The small degree of solid solution on the MnS rich slde cornpared to the large CdS rich single-plzase region could be esplained by the difference in strzrctures of the cotnponents and the relative sizes of the metal ions. The change in lattice parameter as a function of cot)zposition is linear atzd jollous Vegavd's rule within experittzental limits of error. Mns and CdS have gained considerable attention in recent years because of their interesting solid state properties. In order to investigate such properties and thermodynamic quantities of mixed compositions of transition metal chalcogenides, it is necessary to establish their phase diagrams. Two earlier publications are concerned with the MnS-CdS system. Schnaase' found complete miscibility when MnS and CdS were co-precipitated in aqueous solutions at room temperature. However, there is evidence that the mixed crystals were not stable over the entire range of composition. roger's' investigation of the ternary system ZnS-CdS-MnS at 900" C indicates a solution of 48 mole pct MnS in CdS. During the course of this work which covers a temperature range from 600" to 100O° C, emphasis has been placed on the use of high-purity materials and well-defined modifications of starting products. EXPERIMENTAL Starting Materials. The stable green modification of MnS with NaCl structure was prepared by direct fusion of the elements and by chemical transport reaction. Stoichiometric amounts of manganese of 99.99+ pct purity and of sulfur of 99.999 pct purity from Gallard-Schlesinger Corp. were sealed in an evacuated quartz tube at a pressure of 10"5 mm Hg and annealed for 48 to 60 hr at 800°C. The quartz tubes used throughout this work were outgassed under high vacuum at a temperature of 90OU to 1000° C for 12 to 18 hr. For the synthesis of MnS by chemical transport3 stoichiometric ratios of elemental manganese and sulfur and small amounts of iodine were sealed under vacuum in a quartz tube, which was placed in the temperature gradient, 900/800-C, of a two zone furnace. Single crystals of MnS in form of platelets and octahedra were deposited at the cooler end of the tube. The manganese content was determined by EDTA titratin. A typical result of several analyses was 63.05 pct Mn which agreed well with the computed value, 63.14 pct. Commercially available CdS of 99.9+ pct purity, a mixture of the cubic and hexagonal forms, was converted into the hexagonal high-temperature modification by annealing CdS under vacuum in quartz tubes at 700° C for about 36 hr. As a second method, cadmium sulfide was transported in a temperature gradient, 70O° /650" C, with in vacuo sublimed iodine from the hot to the cooler zone of the tube. Large sized crystals in form of hexagonal columns and some platelets were obtained. An average result of the cadmium analysis by EDTA titration4 was 77.93 pct in good agreement with the computed value, 77.81 pct. Only the NaCl modification of MnS and the wurtzite modification of CdS were used for the solid solutions. Preparation of Solid Solutions. Finely powdered MnS and CdS samples were thoroughly mixed in molar ratios and compressed into pellets of about 6 mm diam and 2 mm in height at a pressure of approximately 13,500 atm.

THE problem of producing a uniform, medium-fine sand for glass-furnace feed has been of interest to the glass-container industry for many years. In the present investigation of the problem, conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Owens-Illinois Glass Co., Alton, Ill., a satisfactory method of producing such sand was developed. The investigation involved continuous-grinding studies of glass sand with flint and porcelain pebbles, steel balls and rods, and a simultaneous study of classification. The most satisfactory procedure consisted of grinding in a pebble or ball mill followed by a double classification: hydraulic classification to separate the oversize for return to the grinding unit and mechanical classification to remove fines and impurities from the ground sand. The proper application of this flowsheet usually yielded a graded sand containing less iron than the feed even when grinding was done in a steel-lined ball mill. The amount of sand ground into the so-called "dusting" sizes was, in all cases, less than 10 pct. Experiments were made which showed that this very fine sand could be beneficiated to a usable material. Background The advantages in utilizing a uniform, medium-fine sand as a feed for glass furnaces has motivated a considerable amount of research on the ,problem of producing such sand by glass producers and others. For the glass producer, the faster melting rate of such a graded sand offers the possibilities of reduced fuel costs and increased furnace capacity. In addition, there is the likelihood of improving the quality of the melt and thereby reducing the number of seeds (air bubbles) and stones (unrnelted grains) in the finished ware. Although the melting rate of a glass batch depends on other factors in addition to the grain size of the sand, there is experimental evidence to show that grain size influences the melting rate considerably. Potts, Brookover, and Burch' found that when the raw materials (sand, soda ash, and limestone) were always matched in- size, there was a great decrease in the melting time as the grain size of the materials was decreased. They found, too, that when the grain sizes of the soda ash and Limestone were held constant at 40 to 60 mesh, the minimum melting time occurred when 40 to 60 mesh sand was used. The increase in melting time with decrease in grain size beyond 40 to 60 mesh was due, they postulated, to accelerated demixing or separation of batch during melting as the grain size of the sand decreased in relation to the grain size of the other materials. An earlier investigatora found that the highest rate of melting and purifying ordinary glass was obtained when medium-size sand (0.385 to 0.120 mm, correspondingly roughly to 40 to 120 mesh) was used. Although batches containing smaller-size sand were found to fuse more rapidly, the time required to remove air bubbles from such melts actually increased the total duration of the process. Coarsegrained sand, it was stated, increased greatly the times of both melting and purifying. Although the laboratory data are difficult to confirm on a plant scale, observations by the Owens-Illinois Glass Co. indicate a higher furnace capacity of better-quality ware when a medium-fine sand is used in the batch. During the recent war, the glass producer was inclined to overlook a considerable variation in raw materials in the interest of higher production. For instance, table I shows the wide range in the amounts of various screen fractions in sand supplied by one producer to the Terre Haute plant of Owens-Illinois. MEETING OF SAN FRANCISCO SECTION Twenty members were present at the meeting of the San Francisco Section, May 20, 1919. Chairman Bradley being in Alaska, vice-chairman, T. A. Rickard, presided. Prof. Frank H. Probert gave a short account of the activities of the governmental commission, consisting of himself, George S. Rice, and F. G. Cottrell, which recently visited Europe, and studied the coal, iron, salt, and chemical industries. When the work is finished reports will he issued. He gave a resume of the history of. the changes in nationality of Alsace-Lorraine and 'described the importance of the region for coal, iron, and potash. With the return of these provinces France will have an annual output of more iron ore than she has coke to smelt it with; hence, the importance of the Saar coal field. With these new mines France will take the predominant position in the iron and steel-industry formerly held by Germany. Many details were given of the devastated mines of France, and of their former value, production and the destruction that overtook them. Noteworthy is it that much of the damage was done as late as Oct. 28, 1918, for the express purpose of ruining the country industrially. The damaged area of the Valenciennes coal basin embraced twenty-four concessions, three were damaged by artillery bombardment, but have resumed operations since the' armistice, nine had their surface: equipment destroyed by battle, pillage, and sabotage, while twelve concessions at the eastern-end of-the field suffered from wilful, systematic destruction. Of the 285 shafts in the district, 172 were flooded either by: turning surface streams into them, or, by wrecking the cuvellage; thus, admitting water and quicksand from the water-bearing strata above the coal measures. Two hundred and thirty-five surface plants were damaged, many of them to such an extent that they must be scrapped. These properties gave employment to 135,000 men before the war and, even admitting the remote possibility of getting workmen, the terrible destruction and devastation makes housing and living a difficult problem. It will probably be from 3 to 5 years before the mines are drained and information obtained as to underground conditions; to attain the pre-war output may require from 12 to 15 years.

MY subject covers the effect that recent metallurgy has had on operations at the Utah-Delaware mine. This mine is the old Highland Boy mine of Bingham Canyon, Utah, one that has now been in operation for about 30 years. It was first operated by Messrs. Weir and Newhouse as a gold mine, under direction of the Highland Boy Gold Mining Co. The ore was oxidized gold ore and it was treated on the property in a cyanidation plant. During the process of development, sulfide ore was found assaying about 5 per cent copper. It proved to be the discovery of what is yet the largest sulfide copper orebody in the State. The first shipment was made in December, 1896. A smelter was built in Salt Lake Valley to treat this ore and not long after the property was sold to the Utah Consolidated Mining Co. From 1900 to 1924, the mine was a large producer of direct-smelting ore which averaged for many years 4.5 per cent. copper, then later dropped to 2 per cent. copper. During the years 1912 to 1920, direct-smelting lead ore was also mined. In 1918'and 1919 ore developments at depth showed a decided increase in silica content and a porphyry sill so closely associated with the ore that it was impossible to mine the ore clean and it was found necessary to build a copper flotation Eoncentrator at Tooele. The mill had a capacity of 1000 tons a day and made a recovery of 90 per cent., and would have been responsible for a continuance of profitable operations had it not been for a slump in the copper market and the necessary high cost of mining ore on the lower levels. RESULTS OF SELECTIVE FLOTATION In 1924 the mine was on the point of a shutdown which had all the earmarks of being permanent; it was being operated at a heavy loss and preparations were made to pull the pumps and salvage the machinery. The plant at Tooele was remodelled for selective flotation by the Inter- national Smelting Co. in order to treat custom ores, and incidentally to clean up a possible 10,000 tons of lead-zinc ore which it was thought possible to get in the Utah-Delaware before shutting the mine down. Results were so encouraging that an effort was made to develop more lead-

The U. S. Navy Department has perfected plans for the enrollment and training of considerable numbers of engineering officers. A school for this purpose, the U. S. Navy Steam Engineering School, has been established by the Department at Hoboken, N. J. The school is open to men between the ages of 21 and 40 who meet the physical requirements of the Navy, who are of thorough ability and officer-like character and who have completed the mechanical or electrical engineering course at certain recognized technical schools, or who possess an education and experience adjudged to be an equivalent thereof. Enrollment in the U. Naval Reserve Force of men properly qualified may be made at any Naval enrolling office, notation being made of the applicant's qualifications and desire to be detailed to this school. Applicants will be enrolled as Chief Machinist Mates, and during the course of instruction will draw the pay of this rating, $83 per month, plus $60 per month paid as subsistence. Upon graduation, men will be commissioned as Ensigns in the U. S. Naval Reserve, with a salary of $1700 per year. The duty to which a graduate of this school will be assigned will be that of an engineer officer in the auxiliary service of the Navy. Special provision has been made for the continuance of the school with proper material by a Navy regulation which permits undergraduates of the Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior Classes in recognized engineering schools to enroll in the Naval Reserve Force with the rating of Seaman 2d Class, and continue their courses at the institutions where they have matriculated. Such men will be called into active service after their graduation, and can at that time, if they are qualified to pass an officers' physical examination, apply for admission to the U. S. Navy Steam Engineering School. Men who are registered in the draft, either graduates or undergraduates, may enroll with the proper enrolling officer by securing from their draft board a letter of release, which in all probability can be obtained for this purpose. The aim of this school is not simply to produce engineers, but to produce naval engineering officers in the true sense of the word. The course of instruction covers a period of five months, arranged in four periods.

FROM the first to the last meeting of t h e Rocky Mountain Club John Hays Hammond served as president. He guided its deliberations when there were any, but that always y o u n g organization was never particularly deliberate. Youth never is. And the Club was the embodiment of the youthful spirit of the West, which considers any- thing can be done if there be but the will to do it. Ham- mond and the others came out of the West, but they, brought the West with them P and in all the far countries in which he has served his profession and in all the honorable offices in which he has served his country, he lived true to the ideals under which he was raised. A Californian, born in San Francisco in 1855, the son of an army officer, Major Richard Pindell Hammond, educated in the public schools of his native city, at Yale, and at Freiburg, he turned early and quickly to mining. He served his apprenticeship as all successful mining men do, as assayer, surveyor, as assistant in ex-aminations and later as principal, and finally as mine manager. Even in those days of beginnings, his future world-wide career was foreshadowed in that Mexico as well as California served as his training school. His first major step up the ladder was in connection with the Bunker Hill and Sullivan mine, where he served in various positions finishing as president and considerable owner. It was from this great lead mine that he was called to South Africa, where he remained a number of years and was the technical expert who guided the great enterprises of Barnato Brothers and Cecil Rhodes. The story of his activity in developing the "deeps" of the Rand and in opening Rhodesia has been often told but is always an alluring one of adventure and accomplish-ment. After his famous escape from death at Johannes-burg as a member of the Reform Committee, he went first to London and later returned to the United States representing both British and American capital in the purchase and development of great mines in all parts of the world. For some years he was general man-ager, consulting engineer, and director of the Guggen-heim Exploration Co., but of recent years he has oper-ated entirely on his own account and with marked success.

DURING the past twenty years, a considerable background of knowledge has been built up on the chemical behavior of oxygen in liquid iron. Little is known regarding oxygen in liquid nickel or the effect of nickel as an alloying element on the behavior of oxygen in liquid steel. The solubility of oxygen in liquid iron was determined by Fetters and Chipman' and, more precisely, by Taylor and Chipman.' The Ni-NiO eutectic was placed by Merica and Waltenberg"' * at 1438°C and 0.24 pct 0, and this point has been confirmed by others." O It was reported by von Bohlen und Halbach and LeitgebelT that nickel and its oxide are miscible in all proportions at 1600°C, but this report is discredited by observations of others. The melting point of NiO according to von Wartenberg and ReuschV s 1990°C. Approximate values of oxygen solubility at several temperatures were reported by Hensel and Sc0tt.O The data of Krupowski and Balickil0 are inconsistent with those of Hensel and Scott and indicate a solubility less than half that found in the present study. For oxygen solubility in Fe-Ni alloys under pure iron oxide-nickel oxide slags, only the scattered data of von Bohlen und Halbach and LeitgebelT are avail- able. The careful work of Bardenheuer and Brauns" involved silica-saturated slags. The equilibrium between Fe-Ni alloys and iron oxide-nickel oxide slags was studied by zur Strassenu and by Jander and Senf,u but no oxygen analyses were reported. Oxygen in Pure Nickel Apparatus and Nlethod: Samples were taken with a "Taylor sampler" from a bath of molten electrolytic nickel held under an air atmosphere in a magnesia-lined 30 lb induction furnace. Saturation of the melt with oxygen was effected partly by the addition of chemically pure black nickel oxide and partly by the air atmosphere. Samples were taken only when there was a clearly visible oxide phase present. To avoid contamination of this oxide phase, the silica-sheathed Pt—Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouples, by means of which temperatures were measured, were immersed in the melt for the minimum time consistent with accurate reading. Gold and beryllium form an intermediate phase composed of the two metals in equal atomic proportions and having the formula AuBe. According to Winkler,' this phase probably exists in two modifications: beta, stable below about 600°C, and alpha, stable between 600°C and the melting point, about 740°C. Only the low-temperature beta form will be considered in this paper. Experimental Procedure The gold used had a fineness of 999.75 to 999.85, balance mainly silver, and the beryllium purity was better than 99.8 pct. AuBe was prepared by melting the constituents in a beryllia crucible in an evacuated induction furnace. After melting and thorough mixing, the alloy was allowed to solidify in the crucible. No difficulty was encountered in obtaining a homogeneous ingot. Both chemical analysis and microscopic examination of the ingot showed that the alloy was essentially one phase, containing 50 at. pct gold. The alloy was quite brittle and powder samples could easily be prepared by grinding in an agate mortar. The X-ray diffraction patterns were made with CuK-alpha radiation in a Debye-Scherrer powder camera 57.3 mm in diameter. The film was placed unsym-metrically in the camera in order to afford a basis for film-shrinkage corrections. A sample homogenized at 500°C gave the same diffraction pattern as a sample taken from the as-melted ingot. General Results The diffraction pattern of AuBe was readily indexed on the basis of a simple cubic lattice with ao = 4.659 + 0.001kX. If the unit cell is assumed to contain four AuBe "molecules," the calculated X-ray density is 13.46 grams per cc as compared with the measured density of 13.55 gm per cc. The only missing reflections in the diffraction pattern are (100) and (220) (see Table I). Since these missing reflections are not those characteristic of body or face centering, the lattice of AuBe must be simple cubic. To locate the positions of the atoms within the unit cell, two possibilities had to be considered: I. The structure was disordered and there were eight positions to be filled by an LCaverage" gold-beryllium atom. That the structure was disordered seemed unlikely since the lattice parameter did not vary with composition in alloys containing sornewhat more and somewhat less than so at' pet gold, indicating a fixed composition for AuBe.

For general purposes, insulating materials may be any of those mineral substances that provide a barrier between a desired human environmental feature and an unwanted condition. In this sense, radiation shields, electrical insulations, cryogenic insulation, and acoustical barriers would qualify. For this chapter only the thermal and acoustic insulations used for the median range of normal comfort control will be covered. Because of their magnitude and complexity the other fields are left to other chapters. In another sense, this section deals only with the ultra-lightweight aggregates and insulations, rather than the multitude of light-weight structural materials. Definitions and Uses The insulating materials covered in this chapter are the three groups of mineral products that provide thermal or acoustic barriers through the median temperatures encountered in home and industry. The three mineral categories are perlite, vermiculite, and the silicate wools whether they be categorized as glass, mineral, or rock. Perlites are those amorphous aluminum silicates with minor impurities that take the form of a felsitic, glassy lava possessing a pearl-like luster and concentric cracking. In a more commercial sense the term is used to describe either the natural or processed acidic, volcanic glass, containing from 2 to 5% combined water, that may be converted to a frothy mass by heating rapidly to the softening point. Vermiculites are micaceous, hydrated magnesium iron aluminum sheet silicates of varying composition. Commercial vermiculites are any of these sheet silicates that are capable of sufficient expansion on rapid heating to make an acceptable, highly porous product. Mineral wools, rock wools, silicate cottons, glass fiber are generic names for manufactured fibers in which the fiber forming substance may be slag, certain rocks, or glass. The fibers may be made by a blowing or spinning process. The resultant fibers may be felted or matted or gathered in the manner best suited to the use. The three groups may be used competitively to insulate ceilings and walls. The fibers have strong advantages in this area as they may be manufactured in batts that are stable in residential wall construction. The perlites and vermiculites are more suited to insulate cores and cavities of masonry walls and as plaster and concrete aggregates for thermal insulations. Vermiculite is widely used for insulating attic floors. Because of manufacturing techniques and controls, the glass fibers have made great strides as composites in the plastics industry but only a few of these uses classify in the insulation category.

Gold and beryllium form an intermediate phase composed of the two metals in equal atomic proportions and having the formula AuBe. According to Winkler,' this phase probably exists in two modifications: beta, stable below about 600°C, and alpha, stable between 600°C and the melting point, about 740°C. Only the low-temperature beta form will be considered in this paper. Experimental Procedure The gold used had a fineness of 999.75 to 999.85, balance mainly silver, and the beryllium purity was better than 99.8 pct. AuBe was prepared by melting the constituents in a beryllia crucible in an evacuated induction furnace. After melting and thorough mixing, the alloy was allowed to solidify in the crucible. No difficulty was encountered in obtaining a homogeneous ingot. Both chemical analysis and microscopic examination of the ingot showed that the alloy was essentially one phase, containing 50 at. pct gold. The alloy was quite brittle and powder samples could easily be prepared by grinding in an agate mortar. The X-ray diffraction patterns were made with CuK-alpha radiation in a Debye-Scherrer powder camera 57.3 mm in diameter. The film was placed unsym-metrically in the camera in order to afford a basis for film-shrinkage corrections. A sample homogenized at 500°C gave the same diffraction pattern as a sample taken from the as-melted ingot. General Results The diffraction pattern of AuBe was readily indexed on the basis of a simple cubic lattice with ao = 4.659 + 0.001kX. If the unit cell is assumed to contain four AuBe "molecules," the calculated X-ray density is 13.46 grams per cc as compared with the measured density of 13.55 gm per cc. The only missing reflections in the diffraction pattern are (100) and (220) (see Table I). Since these missing reflections are not those characteristic of body or face centering, the lattice of AuBe must be simple cubic. To locate the positions of the atoms within the unit cell, two possibilities had to be considered: I. The structure was disordered and there were eight positions to be filled by an LCaverage" gold-beryllium atom. That the structure was disordered seemed unlikely since the lattice parameter did not vary with composition in alloys containing sornewhat more and somewhat less than so at' pet gold, indicating a fixed composition for AuBe.

GAS as a factor in the efficiency of oil production, might be a better title for this paper as it deals in general with the significance of the gas-oil ratio as an index of the efficiency of oil production and briefly discusses oil production methods with reference to the gas-oil ratio in wells, particularly during the early life of a field. In the recent hearings held at Washington before the Federal Oil Conservation Board the fuller utilization of the energy contained in the gas occluded in or associated with the oil underground was stressed by some of the speakers when referring to greater ultimate recovery of oil. One speaker commenting on this point said in part, "There is ample evidence indicative that if the gas associated with the petroleum in our fields were conserved and elevated gas pressure maintained in the oil sands during their productive life, the ultimate production of oil could be greatly increased."

J. B. Haffner, or "Barney" as he is known to his wide circle of friends, was born at Landskrona, Sweden, on Christmas Day, 1886. He attended grade and preparatory schools there and then went to the Royal Technical Institute at Stockholm from which he graduated as a mining engineer in 1910. During these school years he gained practical experience in his summer vacations by working in various mines in Sweden and other European countries. Upon graduation he set forth for the land of opportunity, the United States. Upon arrival in this country he found people everywhere talking about the fabulous gold fields in Alaska and thereupon set sail for Nome, to take part in placer gold mining operations. Returning to the States, Barney worked in Illinois coal mines for a time and then carried on some construction work in Oklahoma. In 1913 he accepted employment with the Ray Consolidated Copper Co. in Arizona and soon found himself in positions of responsibility in the operating and

As already announced, the Arizona Meeting of the Institute is to be held from the 18th to the 25th of September. There will be a special train from New York City to Arizona and return, to take members and guests of the Institute to the meeting. The Committee in charge consists of Walter Douglas, Chairman, Cleveland E. Dodge, John C. Greenway, Arthur S. Dwight and Julius Kruttschnitt, Jr., and while the plans of this Committee are not complete, it may be announced that the train will be run with the requisite number of Pullman, dining and baggage cars to accommodate those who desire to go, which will accompany the party during the entire week of the Arizona Meeting as per the following program, including, of course, the visit to the Grand Canyon. As soon as details have been worked out, a circular will be issued giv¬ing full information concerning the trip.

Occurrences and associations of natural tellurides are constrained by the relative fugacities of Te, in specific mineralizing environments. Some are rare (e.g., FeTe2) and others absent (e.g. MoTe , ZnTe) m nature because high f-Te2/f-S2 ratios are rare or unattainable , whereas others (e. g . , Ag2Te,HgTe) require lower ratios and are common. Complex and seemingly chaotic sulfide-telluride associations are, in fact, highly systematic and depend both on temperature and fugacity ratios. Some older sulfides act as buffers via reactions such as PbS + Te2 = PbTe + S2, thereby affecting the deposition and paragenesis of younger tellurides and the combined or uncombined mode of occurrence of precious metals. Thermochemical calculations of telluride-sulfide-oxide equilibria can have pragmatic value. The thermochemical approach tells us little about the Te "source", but is beginning to unravel the systematics of telluride mineralogy and controls at the precipitational end of the line.

The Committee on Valuation of the American Electric Railway Association, has had compiled a "Bibliography on Valuation of Public Utilities." The work was done by the library force of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and brings up to Dec. 23, 1915; a bibliography issued by the American Society of Civil Engineers on May 15, 1912. The Bibliography has been printed -and issued by the American Electric Railway Association, 8 West 40th Street, New York, N. Y., and may be obtained from its Secretary on the payment of 50 c. References are arranged under the following headings: General, Electric Light and Power, Gas Works, Mining, Railroads, Steam Power, Street and Inter-urban Railways, Telegraph and Telephone., Water Power, Water Works. References are given to the principal technical publications, to various works on the question, of valuation, to rules and regulations of Commissions and other official bodies, and to the proceedings of various societies. Undoubtedly the compilation is the most comprehensive that has yet been published.
