The original Dorrance breaker of the Lehigh Valley Coal Co. was erected in 1883. The coal beds were clean and dry, consequently a dry preparation system was used, consisting of revolving cylindrical screens for sizing and hand-picking, to remove the few impurities from the run of mine coal. The picking or cleaning room contained long parallel rows of chutes with seats mounted on them, for the use of the breaker boy, who bent over the chute and picked out the refuse material from the coal as it gravitated down the chute. The introduction of dry mechanical pickers, of, the sliding frictional type, in the early nineties lessened the number of boys, but hand-cleaning on the coal and refuse discharge ends of the mechanical picker was necessary. The Pardee spiral pickers, which were brought out about 1900, were better than the gravity pickers and gradually replaced them. In 1912 the breaker was entirely remodeled, although the original frame was retained. The revolving screens were replaced by shaking screens, and Pardee spirals were installed on all sizes of coal from egg to pea coal, inclusive. Hand-picking still was necessary on the coal and refuse ends of the spirals, although the changes did result in a reduction of the former breaker force. As mining advanced, and the thick clean bed became exhausted, it was necessary to mine veins containing a high percentage of impurities, which complicated the preparation problem. The most serious difficulty was the increase in the quantity of damp or wet run of mine, which could not be fully cleaned on the spirals. When this quantity exceeded approximately 5 per cent. of the feed, it was necessary to send the excess of the wet coal to the company's Prospect colliery for wet washing. This plan worked well for a time, but as the amount approached 15 per cent., with the prospect of a further increase, the company considered the building of a wet-washing plant. The Dorrance breaker was the only dry-cleaning plant operated by the company. At the seventeen other collieries, wet washing was employed, and jigs, both plunger and pan, were used. All the practical methods used in the anthracite fields were investigated, and it was finally decided to adopt the Rheolaveur system. In 1898, Joseph L. Giroux and J. A. Snedaker organized the Pilot Knob Copper Co. and began developing the Pilot Knob mine at Kim-berly, Nev., for high-grade copper ores, carrying good gold and silver values, that the formation had disclosed. At that time the nearest railroad was over 150 mi. distant. The high-grade ores did not prove to be extensive at this point—at least to the depth (240 ft.) to which the work was carried—but development of neighboring claims indicated extensive deposits of sulfide porphyry ore of concentrating grade lying at shallow depth, and deeper deposits of direct-smelting oxidized ores occurring in limestone near the limestone-porphyry contact. The properties passed through the hands of several organizations, with only meager development, until acquired in 1913 by Consolidated Coppermines Co., whose holdings now comprise 3480 acres of mining claims in the Robinson district. Since that time development has been prosecuted more actively; and for the purpose of determining the most efficient and economical method of treating the ores, considerable testing work has been done during the past three years, both in the laboratory and in actual mill operations. At first, the shipments were of ore high enough in grade to be profitable even with the long wagon hauls to the railroad and prevailing freight and smelting charges. In 1905, a blast furnace and a concentrator were erected at Kimberly. On account of insufficient ore supply, the blast furnace was never blown in and later was dismantled. The concentrator as originally equipped was operated for only about two months, both because the ore supply at that time was not sufficient and because gravity concentration did not yield satisfactory extraction. The location and arrangement of the mill further entailed high operating costs. In 1908, the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. began to mill successfully, on a large scale, its sulfide porphyry ores, which are similar in character to the adjacent Coppermines ores. After that time, all of the ores and concentrates produced by Coppermines Company were smelted and a considerable part of the Coppermines low-grade ores concentrated at the Steptoe works of the Nevada Consolidated Co.

Since the opening of the Wheeler oil and gas field in Carter County and the discovery of oil near Lawton, Comanche County, Okla., in 1904, interest has been aroused regarding the origin of the oil in the Permian "Red Bed" region which lies between the Wichita and Arbuckle Mountains on the north and the Red River on the south. The later development of the Healdton, Loco, Duncan, Fox, and Graham fields south and west of the Arbuckle Mountains has brought the region into prominence. Recent discoveries of Ordovician and of Pennsylvanian fossils in wells in the Healdton field and of Pennsylvanian fossils in the Fox and Graham fields are of such importance from a scientific and a commercial standpoint that the occurrences and the problems arising therefrom are here briefly described. Producing oil and gas sands in the southern Oklahoma fields, with the exception of those in the Cretaceous and underlying rocks in the vicinity of Madill, Marshall County, are associated with the Permian "Red Beds" or with the underlying Paleozoic strata. In the two fields farthest south of the Arbuckle Mountains, Healdton and Loco, production has been entirely confined to sands at depths of 700 to 1400 ft. (213 to 416 m.) and only recently has a producing sand as deep as 1860 ft. (567 m.)l been encountered. These sands are found near and below the base of the red rocks and were supposed by Wegemann and Heald2 to belong in large part to the basal Permian, Wichita formation, or to the immediately underlying formations. Fossils in the blue shales and in the limestones associated with the deeper sands now prove them to be Pennsylvanian and all the producing sands at Healdton are found to be of this age. In the fields nearest the Arbuckle Mountains, the Wheeler sands at a depth of about 700 ft. (213 m.) appear to be of Permian age,

HISTORY. THE use of iron for the precipitation of copper was known at least as early as the fifteenth century. Both Paracelsus and Basil Valentine refer to it in their writings, as early as 1500 A. D. It was used in Peru for this purpose prior to 1637, and at Rio Tinto, Spain, as early as the sixteenth century. The statement has been made repeatedly that in the early history of the mining industry at Butte, the practicability of this method of recovering copper from solution was overlooked, and that enormous quantities of copper-bearing water were allowed to go to waste, the copper in which might easily have been recovered at small cost; and .that this oversight on the part of the mine operators was due to ignorance of this method of recovering copper. As a matter of fact, very little copper-bearing mineral was encountered in the mines of Butte until a depth of 400 or 500 ft. bad been reached, and in many cases much greater depths were necessary to reach the copper-bearing zone. The water encountered in the upper levels (although in most cases quite highly mineralized) contained little or no copper, and it was only after considerable areas of copper-bearing ore' had been uncovered and developed that copper sulphate began to appear in the mine water in any considerable quantity. In fact, the first water that was observed to contain copper carried it in such small amounts as to be of little or no importance. It was only after years of underground work had opened extensive areas of stopes, drifts, and other underground workings, these being subsequently filled with waste, nearly all of which contained small copper values, which became oxidized by exposure to the air and were acted upon by the slowly percolating mineral water, that the recovery of copper from mine water became commercially important.

Bituminous coal furnaces give way to coke, and by 1880, the American iron and steel industry was growing at a tremendous rate. In the twentieth century, the number of operating blast furnaces was cut in half while pig iron capacity more than doubled. Bituminous coal furnaces Attempts to relieve the shortage of charcoal by the use of bituminous coal in American furnaces began quite early. Use of bituminous coal in the blast furnace was restricted to areas lacking anthracite deposits but rich in deposits of bituminous coaL The largest concentration of bituminous coal furnaces was in Western Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Western New York state. Other areas included Kentucky and southern portions of the states of Indiana and Illinois. The first trials were made in Pennsylvania around 1780. Gradually several more furnaces began charging coal with their burdens as a partial substitution for charcoal. These so called cheaters were numerous, especially in Western Pennsylvania, which around 1810 began to expand its ironmaking capacity to catch up with the Lehigh Valley and the Schuylkill According to the existing references, complete bituminous coal burdens began to be used in this area only around 1840 when the ironmakers hastily adopted the hot blast apparatus introduced from England. The majority of these furnaces were built, however, after 1844 when an extensive experimental program, carried out at the Shenango Steam and Water Hot Blast Charcoal, Coke and Raw-Coal Furnace produced favorable results, with coal containing up to 35 pct volatile matter. The furnace was located near the Shenango River on the Lackawannok Run, five miles northwest of Mercer, Pennsylvania. It was built, owned, and operated by David Hogeland of Mercer. This chapter discusses the evolution of high-speed shaft sinking in the South African goldfields. Whether we are talking of an additional shaft at an existing mine or the opening of a new mine, the increasing depth of the ore-bearing reef and the unremitting inflation of costs have provided the compelling incentive to shorten the time taken to sink a shaft and start earning revenue. The high costs of sinking a modern shaft system in South Africa are indicated by the recent example of a deep-level mine in the Orange Free State where the cost was nearly $22!42 million. This was for a single large shaft of 33 ft 6 in. diam (in all cases, shaft diameters refer to the finished diameter of the shaft, e.g., inside the concrete) and 7600 ft deep with a prestressed concrete brattice wall dividing the shaft into upcast and downcast compartments. Higher costs and the consequent demand for increased tonnages, deeper shafts with higher rock temperatures, which necessitate highly sophisticaled ventilation and refrigeration requirements, have all accentuated the importance of time in a shaft-sinking operation. Rectangular shafts with their simple design and comparatively reasonable sinking speeds remained popular for many years until greater mining depths combined with a host of the other allied problems inevitably led to changes in shaft design. Circular shafts appeared to offer many advantages, particularly when considering ventilation, strength, mechanization, and sinking through bad ground and heavily watered zones. However, these advantages were largely offset by the slow rate of advance necessitated by the need to stop sinking in order to line the shaft. The development of the curb ring which enabled lining to take place above the bottom of the shaft and the use of multideck stages allowing sinking and lining to be carried out concurrently resulted in a major break- through. Rectangular shafts, which are still popular elsewhere, have been superseded in South Africa by circular shafts which are almost without exception the only shafts sunk in our goldfields today.

In a paper read by title at the Washingtoil meeting of the Institute,' May, 1905,I discussed at considerable length the geological relations, mode of occurrence, and the genesis of the lead- and zinc-ores of the VirginisTennessee region. The present paper treats of the purely ecorlomic phases of the zinc-ores of the district,—such as methods of mining the ores, their preparation and treatment. The Albemarle coullty mines and plant were discussed in the paper referred to above, and mill not be considered here. Methods of Mining. Until very recently the mining of lead- and zinc-ores in Virginia mas limited wholly to the surface-belt of weathering. The mode of occurrence and the character of the ores to be mined were such as to demand the employment of niethods used in mining secondary concentrated ores. Accordingly, a system similar to that practiced in mining brown iron-ores was employed, being modified to meet the changed conditions. Oxidized or Soft Ores.—Up to the present time practically all the ore mined in the Virginia district has been of the oxidized or soft type;—the silicate, calamine, and the carbonate, smith-sonite; largely the former, which has been localized and concentrated at only slight depths below the surface. Because of the extreme irregularity with which the limestone weathers when stripped of the overlying residual clay, it presents a roughened surface of large and small irregular " chimneys"

China now leads the world in antimony production, having contributed during recent years something over 60 per cent. of the world's production. The history of the antimony industry of China dates back to 1897 when the Tai Shing Co. was formed, under contract with the Hunan Bureau of Mines, for the smelting of the ore to crude; and in 1908 the Wah Chang Mining & Smelting Co. was formed for the smelting and refining of the ore and crude to regulus. The writer was then asked to take charge of the erection and control of this first plant for regulus production in China and has, since then, been more or less connected with the antimony industry in this country. This paper contains the results of many years' experience in connection with the Wah Chang Mining & Smelting Co., Changsha; the Pao Tai Mining & Smelting Co., Wuchow; the Loong Kee Smelting Works and the To-Cheng Smelting Works, Hankow; as well as information gathered from various other small smelters, scattered in different parts of the Provinces of Hunan, Hupeh, Kwangsi, and Kwangtung. An idea of the growing importance of regulus production in this country can be gleaned from the fact that, within a period of about 8 years, the export of regulus from Hunan alone jumped from 3 tons in 1908 to about 6000 tons in 1915; that a production of about 23,000 tons of regulus per year could easily be effected from all the smelters, as tabulated below, most of which were erected a year or two ago under the stimulus of the war booms, if the price at Hankow were to stay somewhere about $900 (Mexican) per ton, half of what it was at its height, thus enabling the utilization of ores from the hinterlands of the provinces; and even under the present ruling of prices and the closing of the less favored smelters, the production of regulus should not be less than 12,000 tons per year.

TROUGH washers were among the earliest methods used for concentrating ores; they are referred to by Agricola about the middle of the sixteenth century as already being used while the hand- operated jigging sieve had only recently come into use. For cleaning coal the trough washer apparently was first used in France and Belgium about 1841. The early trough washers were intermittent and the refuse at least was shoveled out by hand. The invention of a continuous jig washer, by a Frenchman, Berard, in 1848, acted as a stimulus to coal washings in jigs and retarded progress in trough washing in the nineteenth century. Chapman and Mott' describe a number of trough washers developed in England and on the Continent from 1850 to 1900, such as the Bell and Ramsay, Ramsay, Bell and Green, Wunderlich, Scaife, McLellan, Lodge, Elliott, Blackett, and Murton. The later of these removed the refuse mechanically, either intermittently or continuously, but in ways that interfered with stratification.

The generation of fibers composed of individual TiZn15 compound particles and their influence on crystallographic orientation in chill-cast, hot-rolled hypoentectic Zn-Ti alloys were explored. Metallo-graphic examination and X-ray diffraction data show that such fibers form a planar network after 50 pet reduction which eventually tends to suppress twinning at some critical reduction level (-90 pct) where the grain size approaches the interfiber, spacing. This leads to the development of a duplex-type projerred orientation through slip rotation consisting of an al-most ideal (0001)(2iiOj texture and a (0001) (1010) rotated component. Correlations between basal-plane rotation and secondary- creep rc11e sugg-est, however that prejerred orientation does not contribute in a major way to the creep resistance of these alloys. EFFORTS to improve the creep resistance of zinc through alloying without incurring a loss in fabricating properties have achieved only minor success with the exception of the very effective addition of titanium. Anderson, Boyle, and Ramsey,l for example, demonstrated that increasing the amount of thiselement from 0.05 to 0.23 wt pct produced a progressive, 45-fold increase in the inverse creep rate of hot-rolled

The study of cobalt-platinum alloys has been of interest since they represent a class of permanent-magnet material in which the disorder-to-order transformation plays a controlling role. The magnetic properties of alloys in the range 40 to 60 at. pct have been found to be greatly influenced by composition and heat-treatment. The peak properties of 4700 coercive force and 9,000,000 gauss-oersteds energy product were obtained by controlled cooling and aging. These high values combined with ductility and machin-ability give the alloys useful characteristics although their high cost limits their application. THE cobalt-platinum alloys have been of interest in the study of permanent-magnet materials ever since the discovery by Jellinghaus that they had unusually high coerceive-force values.' The high coercive force was associated by Jellinghaus with the disorder-order reaction which occurred in these alloys. This was later verified by Gebhardt and Koster in a detailed study.2 An investigation of the structure, mechanism, and kinetics of the disorder-order transformation and resulting property changes in cobalt-platinum alloys has been in progress for some years. Certain phases of this study related to equilibrium rela- tions, and to the mechanism and kinetics of the ordering reaction have been published previously.3-5 In this paper, the results of the processing and heat-treatment studies on 40 to 60 at. pct CO alloys are presented. The magnetic properties have been found to be influenced greatly by the composition, by the cooling rate from the disordering treatment, and the final ordering time and temperature. Coercive force values, Hc, of 4700 oersteds and energy values, (BH)m, approaching 9,000,000 gauss-oersteds have been obtained by controlled cooling and ordering. The present paper records a chapter in the history of the development of an electrolytic manganese industry in the United States.l A relatively large pilot plant at Boulder City, Nev., for the production of electrolytic manganese was conceived as part of the national defense program to make this country independent of foreign importation of manganese ore. The first authorization, in November 1940, however, was for a plant of only several hundred pounds capacity. Improvements in process and subsequent additions to some sections authorized by subsequent appropriations have enabled the plant to produce as much as 2000 lb. of manganese a day for substantial periods of time. Since in pilot-plant operation frequent changes are made in the flowsheet, the electrolytic manganese plant was constructed so that equipment could be rearranged with a minimum of expense and time. Several different kinds of the various ¦ types of equipment were installed for many of the operations, so that the one most suitable for the process might be chosen. Pilot-plant operations were begun in November 1941 and have been continuous except for brief shutdowns for installation of new equipment. More than one-half million pounds of manganese have been produced. The improvements in process, selection of equipment, and operational procedure developed are recorded here. Development of the Process The work of early investigators on the electrolysis of manganese solutions has been reviewed by Shelton. Until the method of continuous production of manganese by electrolysis was perfected by SheltonZm4 and coworkers, no practical procedure had been devised. The method as originally developed by the Bureau of Mines will be described here only briefly. The manganese dioxide ore was reduced in a rotating kiln-type furnace at 650°C. in an atmosphere of "city" gas. The calcine was leached with spent electrolyte and enough sulphuric acid to produce a neutral leach solutioil containing 2 5 grams manganese per liter as manganese sulphate and zoo grams per liter of ammonium sulphate. Arsenic was removed from the solution by the addition of 0.0j gram iron per liter as ferrous sulphate followed by oxidation with manganese dioxide, and aeration, which precipitated the iron as ferric hydroxide. Several of the commonly used methods for deter-mination of effective grain densities of minerals have been evaluated for accuracy and precision, and their applicability to various types of petroleum reservoir minerals tested. Consideration was given to the effect of consolidation, swelling clay, and wettability on these grain-density determinations. Procedures with helium displacement, a modified low-pressure Boyle's law porosimeter, and liquid displacement (water, n-decane, and n-octanol) were tested. The helium-displacement procedure was used primarily as an independent reference for which the effects of fluid-solid interaction, e.g., adsorption and wettability, were negligible. The procedures with the Boyle's law porosimeter and with liquid displacement are the methods in common use. Minerals investigated included calcite, West Texas limestone core samples, California sandstone core samples, and Wyoming bentonite. The number of samples tested, while not large, was adequate to permit application of statistical methods. Grain-density measurements on calcite (Iceland spar) provided a basis of comparison for the accuracy and precision of the procedures under investigation for a material with a high degree of chemical and physical homogeneity and for which fluid-solid interactions were at a minimum. Liquid-displacement procedures (water or n-decane) provided the greatest reliability and precision for measurement of the grain densities of the limestone tested. Gas-displacement procedures (helium or Boyle's law porosimeter) provided the greatest reliability and experimental convenience, if not the greatest precision, for the measurement of the grain densities of the swell- ing clay, Wyoming bentonite, and the shah sandstones which -contained appreciable amounts of swelling, in-terstitial clays. These experiments were designed to evaluate the applicability of the grain-density procedures in common we to some of the less tractable minerals—tight limestones, shaly sandstones, and swelling clays. The results should provide a useful basis for a selection of the method most suitable for application to the various petroleum reservoir minerals encountered and especially for use in the estimation of formation porosity. INTRODUCTION These experiments were undertaken to evaluate the accuracy and precision of several commonly used methods for determination of effective grain densities of minerals, and to test their applicability to various types of petroleum reservoir minerals. Consideration was also given to the effect of consolidation, clay, and wettability on these grain-density determinations. Procedures used included measurements with helium displacement, with a modified low-pressure Boyle's law porosimeter, and with liquid displacement (water, n-decane, and n-octanol). The minerals investigated included calcite, West Texas limestone core samples, California sandstone core samples, and Wyoming bentonite. The accurate determination of the porosity of petroleum reservoir formations, in particular those of low porosity, has received much attention. Both bulk-volume and grain-volume measurements necessary in the evaluation of porosity have been examined by many investigators with the objectives of improving both the accuracy and the precision of these determinations. In this investigation statistical criteria for selection of the most reliable and suitable procedure for use with a given type of mineral are demonstrated. The grain-volume measurement procedures appear to be the most susceptible to improvement.

Growth of the Society When the Institute was born in May, 1871, it was given the name American Institute of Mining Engineers. Yet from its conception a few months earlier, its genetic code clearly carried the message that metallurgy was equal in importance to mining. Thus, the "call" for the initial meeting, which was sent out in April of that year by three mining engineers, Eckley B. Coxe, R. P. Rothwell and Martin Coryell, gave this first objective of the proposed organization as: "the more economic production of the useful minerals and metals." And this call concluded: "Anyone who may have devoted himself to a particular subject connected with either mining or metallurgy, and who may be possessed of new facts in reference to it, would greatly aid in furthering the objects of the proposed association by preparing a paper giving the results of his experience." In response to this call, a group of 22 men assembled in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., for a 3-day meeting beginning May 16, 1871. On the first day, a set of 20 "Rules" was adopted, of which Number 8 read, in part: "The words mining engineers in these rules comprehend engineers connected with mining and metallurgy." On the second day, 18 officers were elected, of whom nine were not present. Moreover, as if to emphasize that the words about metallurgists were to be taken seriously, one of those elected in absentia was the president, David Thomas, a Welshman who had founded the Thomas Iron Co. and who built the first anthracite-fired, hot-blast furnace in this country. The second meeting of the Institute, held in Bethlehem, Pa., in August, had a more metallurgical flavor, and the third meeting, in November, was held in what was then one of the great steel-making centers of the country - Troy, N. Y. This was the home of the Albany and Rensselaer Iron and Steel Co., which held the American rights to Bessemer7s machinery patents. And it was here that the great American steel master, Alexander L. Holley, carried out a series of experiments that led to improvements in the design and method of operation of the Bessemer vessels. It was at this meeting that Holley and Henry Marion Howe, then a "student" at the Albany and Rensselaer plant, were admitted to membership. IN the early fall of 1025, the writer was conducting, in the Ledoux and Co. labora-tory, New York, experiments directed to-ward ascertaining the effect on its impurity content when cathode copper was subjected to a current of various gases at an elevated temperature below the melting point. The apparatus consisted of a vertical I-in. dia. silica tube about 12 in. long, heated on the outside. The cathodes were broken to pass 3/8-in. mesh, and a current of various differ-ent gases was passed up through a 4-in. long column of these loose cathode particles in the vertical tube furnace. Temperature was maintained to 1500° to 1600°F. and the gas treatments lasted from 3 to 6 hr. The writer observed that whenever reducing gas (H2 or CO) was used, these cathode par-ticles stuck together at points of contact with each other. The cohesion was so marked and tenacious that an examination was made of the fractured surfaces, when cathode particles were broken from the cluster. Crystal growth was always found to have taken place across the surfaces where separate particles were in contact, but only after all oxides, sulphates, etc., had been completely removed. The idea of a possible new process was then conceived and was disclosed to A. M. Smoot (V. P. Ledoux and Co.) with intent to obtain his views. The first conception as given Smoot was "to gas-clean broken cathodes, put them in an extrusion press, solidify and extrude them at around 1500°F." Smoot's reaction, after a few moments considera-tion, was, "It looks perfectly all right to me." The writer and his assistants, W. H. Osborn and H. H. Stout, Jr., after confer-ring as to ways and means, decided to go ahead with preliminary laboratory experi-ments, which, it was thought, would move the new process from the possible to the probable. This program followed a course indicated by three basic considerations: I. Since brittle cathodes were often unin-tentionally produced, it seemed probable that the laws controlling this type of deposi-tion could be ascertained. 2. We had already proved the gas-clean-ing feature. 3. There remained to prove: whether a sound, homogeneous metal billet could be produced with crystal growth established over the entire surface of each individual particle in the billet; and, if so, what would be the physical properties? Osborn arranged with Columbia Uni-versity for conducting experiments in its research laboratory to prove or disprove the third item; Columbia assigned C. A. Phillipi, Jr. to assist in the project. A press with a cylinder 2 in. high and of I-in. dia. was used. It was surrounded and heated by a resistance coil of Nichrome wire. Broken tough cathodes were used.
