Vibration and air blast noise from blasting were evaluated during a research program sponsored by the US Bureau of Mines. Blast variables were studied wing small scale model (SCM) tests to evaluate specific variables as well as interactive effects, followed by experiments with production blasts at the surface coal mines. Experimental data showed that the primary variables affecting the ground vibration amplitude are the charge weight per delay and the length of delay interval. Blast variables having a significant effect on the overpressure amplitude include the charge weight per delay, the length of delay, burden and spacing, stemming amount and type, direction of initiation, charge depth, and amount of detonating cord and cover.

The first step in energy conservation in any industrial plant involves implementing many of the day-to-day "housekeeping" items, such as fixing leaks, turning out lights, etc. When this step has been accomplished, additional opportunities require a detailed analysis of the energy systems, evaluation of risks and costs, and assignment of priorities. Examples of conservation schemes drawn from the experience of Du Pont's Energy Management Consulting Services will be discussed. The utility of heat balances for kilns and dryers in minerals processing will be outlined. The input needed from management for the success of conservation efforts will be discussed.

Selective placement of toxic mine spoil has been advocated as a means of reducing environ¬mental pollution at the source. However, methods of burial to control environmental damage are not well understood. Using the finite element method, this paper investigates the burial of toxic material within low permeability packages below the water table. The effects of differing package and spoil permeabilities, anisotropy, and infiltration are modeled to provide information about their effect on the flow system. Projections can then be made that will assist in the design of the toxic spoil package to limit the amount of ground water flowing through them.

The effects of zirconium on the properties of sand cast Mg-rare earth metal alloys were discussed in detail in an earlier publication.' It was shown that a significant improvement in strength properties at temperatures up to 400°F resulted from the zirconium addition. Coal reserve estimates are prepared using a simple equation: the product of area, bed thickness, density and recovery factors. Each of these elements involves a degree of risk based on certain assumptions. Reserve area, thickness and density rely on certain physical data whose accuracy, reliability and sufficiency may be problematical. Estimates of recovery factors for mining and coal preparation are often subjective. Most reserve estimates assume, sometimes incorrectly, that the subject reserves will be completely extracted. The principle that certain coal resources are reserves, if they can be considered economically recoverable at the time of determination, needs to be reexamined in the light of recent market cycles. Reserve estimating requires the exercise of judgments, the validity of which reflect the qualifications, experience and objectivity of the estimator.

The Pachuca - Real del Monte district has produced about 46.6 kt (51,300 ton) Ag from subvolcanic vein deposits. Three types of wall rock alteration are spatially related to the veins: K-feldspar, propylitic, and phyllic. K-feldspar alteration occurs within veins; propylitic alteration occurs in fractured rocks between veins; and phyllic alteration occurs above veins. Concentrations of some trace elements in altered rocks relative to unaltered rocks are summarized below. [ ]

This paper traces the experimental and pilot plant work completed by the authors since 1939 including the various methods which have been developed in applying coarse activated carbon to cyanidation. Last time there was a Take Five in these pages, it dealt largely with the matters considered by your Board of Directors at the meeting on October 20, 1970, in St. Louis, Mo. It was impossible to cover all the points worthy of discussion in the space available. So, at the end of the Take Five in the December issue of [i=], I promised to continue in the next installment. Unfortunately, I was unable to keep that promise. On December 2 your humble servant joined the ranks of those who have suffered a coronary occlusion. While I was away from the office, the very excellent SME staff team that we have built up over the years kept things going without bothering the "old man" unnecessarily. Assistant Executive Secretary, John V. Beall, Mrs. Lillian E. Donaldson, Assistant to the Executive Secretary, Mrs. Ruth Orologio, Administrative Assistant, and Mrs. Alice Ruiz exceeded even their usual dedicated efforts. As a result, the SME came up to the Centennial-Annual Meeting in great shape.

Smyth, presided at the dinner, at the close of which he introduced, as the speaker of the evening, John M. Longyear, who gave a most interesting talk about his work in exploring for coal on the islands of Spitzbergen, 400 miles north of the North Cape of Norway. Oscar Rohn was born in Jackson, Wis., June 27, 1870. He attended the University of Wisconsin and there gained from Professor Van Hise his inspiration for scientific effort and useful attainment. While a student at Wisconsin he was interested in athletics and was a member of the first eight-oared crew that Wisconsin sent to compete with Eastern crews at Poughkeepsie. He was an instructor in the gymnasium for several years. He received his B. S. in 1895 at Wisconsin, specializing in engineering and geology. 1229

Expanding markets and technological investigations now in progress for commercial production of titanium metal and alloys, as well as expanding uses for the oxide, have resulted in greater production, increased prices, and accelerated search for additional commercial occurrences of titanium minerals. For more than 50 years rutile has been used in moderate quantities in ceramics, in the production of ferrotitanium, as well as nonferrous titanium alloys. During the early 1930's, use of pure titanium dioxide was introduced as an ingredient of coatings for electric welding rods. For technical and economic reasons rutile was soon found to be as good or better for mild steel welding rods, and this use continues to account for a good share of the rutile sales in the U. S.

A record 340 senior students with majors in mining and mineral engineering from 21 shcools in the US may be expected to enter a manpower-hungry mineral industry in 1975. While starting salaries may have been the deciding factor in job selection in the past, 1975 graduates will find salaries almost the same in most mining sectors. Meanwhile, the survival prospects of various mineral engineering schools had the usual ups and downs in 1974, but tightening state budgets could still take a toll in reducing the number of schools offering mineral engineering degrees. Two such schools on the endangered list include Montana College of Mineral Science in Butte, Mont., and the College of Mines, University of Idaho, in Moscow, Idaho.

In reviewing the current issues in rock mechanics, the author puts an' emphasis on problems related with the needs of extrapolation in scale and time, and of establishing proper conceptual models, especially in connection with the most recent large-scale and long-term projects such as underground disposal of nuclear waste. In such projects, where valid case histories will not be available for many years to come, the observational method can only be successful if combined with a proper framework approach, such as general rock mass classification systems and behavioral models.

Copper concentrates produced by many operations in the United States and South America contain chalcocite (79.9% Cu) as a major component, yet the grades of these concentrates rarely exceed 25 to 28% Cu. Mineralogical studies made by E.P. Cadwell indicated that the low grades were caused by dilution by pyrite rimmed with secondary chalcocite. Laboratory and plant tests proved that concentrates could be significantly upgraded by using a simple, low cost cyanide leaching technique to dissolve the rims and reject the pyrite. The many advantages of this new procedure are cited and the process steps and a typical flowsheet are described.
