Hydrogen-reduction data for naturally occurring single crystals and Prepared polycrystals of dense hematite have been presented. Results cover the temperature range 400o to 1000oC, for particles from ten sources, ranging in size from 0.07 to 10 mm and in shape from spheres to cylinders, cubes, and thin slabs. A consistent pattern of behavior has been demonstrated for single crystals and the reduction mechanism shown to be temperature-dependent. Below 579oC reduction is a simple topochemical process but at higher temperatuves it is complex and occurs in two distinct stages. Prepared particles from these laboratories behave in a similar manner to the single crystals. Data from two investigators showing topochernical reduction of Prepared particles above 575°C are inconsistent with that for other dense hematites. It is concluded that topochenzical reaction should not be used as a model for generalized rate expressions for dense hematites. SINCE 1958, McKewan1-6 has brought to prominence a simple concept of dense hematite reduction. This model is that oxygen is lost from a hematite particle undergoing reduction only from an oxide-iron interface that recedes in such a way that the oxide remaining retains the original shape of the particle, i.e., reduction occurs topochemically. An adjunct to this concept is that any intermediate oxides in the transition from hematite to iron only form thin layers so that oxygen cannot be lost from the particle without movement of the oxide-iron interface. Further, the rate of oxygen loss from the particle is said to be proportional to the area of the receding interface so that the iron layer grows linearly with time and the over-all reduction process can be described by the equation where ro and do are the initial particle radius and density, respectively, R is the fraction of the original oxygen lost, i.e., the fractional reduction, at time t, and K is the rate constant. The idea of an underlying simplicity in hematite reduction is attractive because it gives a tractable basis from which general theories of hematite reduction can be developed and it has received wide support,7-14 based mainly on the large amount of data13 that can be fitted to Eq. [I]. However, despite the fact that this equation has been derived for dense materials, the bulk of the data that have been used to test it13 have been for materials of only about 90 pct of theoretical density (5.26 g cm-3) or less, so that its generality for dense hematites has not been demonstrated. In any case, as will be seen, adherence of reduction data to Eq. [1] does not necessarily imply that reaction occurs topochemically. In this work only data for hematites approaching theoretical density are considered and it will be shown that in only one study besides McKewan's is topochemical behavior observed over the whole range of temperature investigated. For the majority of materials a linear rate of interface advance is observed to complete reduction only when wustite is not a stable intermediate phase in the transition of hematite to iron, i.e., at temperatures below about 575°C. Above this temperature, reduction is an exceedingly complex series of reactions that takes place in two distinct stages and it is only in the first stage that reaction in any way resembles a topochemical process. This means then that, far from representing general behavior as has commonly been supposed, topochemical reaction for dense hematites is only a particular behavior that may be observed under some circumstances. EXPERIMENTAL Hydrogen-reduction data have been collected and cross-checked in these laboratories by three techniques, weight loss, collection of water evolved in the reduction reactions, and direct metallographic examination. Details of these techniques are discussed elsewhere," where it is shown that results obtained by the three methods are in close agreement. The weight-loss method, by which most of the results were obtained, consisted of hanging the sample in a platinum mesh basket from an Ainsworth Model AV-AU-1 vacuum recording balance inside a vertical l 1/4-in.-ID alumina tube furnace. Dry deoxidized hydrogen was flowed downwards through the tube at 2 to 4 liters min-1 (stp). Single crystals from two sources and artificial oxides from three sources have been examined. The single crystals were from hematite deposits at Yampi Sound, Western Australia, and Brazil, the latter being obtained from Gregory, Bottley and Co., London, U.K. The "Yampi Blue" crystals were hand-picked from washed, magnetically concentrated, sized fractions, -200 mesh BSS (mean diameter ca 0.07 mm) and —36 + 44 mesh BSS (mean diameter ca 0.4 mm) while 10-mm cubes were cut from the Brazilian crystals with a diamond saw. The starting materials for the prepared particles were hematites designated, respectively, "Specpure Iron Oxide", Laboratory No. S639 from Johnson Matthey & Co. Ltd., London, U.K., "Calcined Ferric Oxide" from B.D.H. Laboratory Chemicals Division, Poole, U.K., and "Pigment Grade Oxide", EPR-50, from C. K. Williams & Co., Easton, Pa., U.S.A. Approximately spherical particles were prepared from the artificial oxides by rolling the material, moistened if necessary, in a glass jar, and cylindrical compacts approximately 10 mm in diam and of approximately equal height were pressed in a steel die at 200 psi. This paper presents the historical trend and de- fines the causes of drilling cost escalation in the Gulf of Mexico during the 1970's. The three major components of escalation are: 1) inflation, 2) supply-demand imbalance (demand pull) and 3) decreases in drilling efficiency. The decade was divided into three periods. During each period one component of escalation was responsible for most of the rise in costs. From 1970 through 1973 only inflation pushed costs upward. During 1974 and 1975 a supply- demand imbalance caused most of the escalation. Since 1975, decreases in drilling efficiency have produced the major component of escalation. During any one year or period of years, the sum of the three components will give the total escalation rate. The reasons why different components contribute more toward escalation during certain years than others are shown by following the timing of oil and gas price increases, the overall quality of the acreage offered each year in offshore lease sales and the resulting drilling activity.

Wells based his "Food. of the Gods," namely that growth does not and cannot take place smoothly and steadily, but occurs in a series of bursts and intermissions: "It is as if every living thing has to accumulate force to grow, grows with vigor only for a time, and then has to wait for a space before it can go on growing again."

We have obtained by computer methods the solutions of the Taylor analysis1 for axisymmetric flow in bcc metals. Four modes of slip have been treated in detail:2-4 (111), {112}(111), {123}( 111), and a mixture of all three. In addition to obtaining anisotropy of strength data for randomly oriented or textured polycrystalline material,4 we have also obtained the lattice rotation resulting from slip on the predicted systems. The patterns of lattice rotation are essential to an improved understanding of texture development during deformation. The present note shows the results of lattice rotation for 5 pct axisymmetric compression, for fifty-two axial orientations distributed at 5-deg intervals throughout the standard stereographic triangle. The data are presented in Figs. 1 to 4 for the four modes of slip. The lattice rotation is indicated by a vector, the ends of which correspond to the positions before and after the deformation. The different vectors emanated from a given orientation represent different combinations of five slip systems that satisfy Taylor&apos;s minimum shear criterion.&apos; Fig. 1 shows the results for {110}< 111> slip. They are similar to those obtained by Bishop5 for the case of (111 )(110) slip in axisymrnetric tension, since in axisymmetric flow the sense of lattice rotation for {111)( 110) in tension is the same as that for (110) (111) in compression. The pattern of lattice rotation may be divided into three regions: region A in which the rotation is toward [100]; region B, toward [lll]; and region C, toward either [ loo] or L lll]. Although some slip combinations in region C lead to [1101, the latter is not stable as continued activity of the same combinations will eventually move the axis toward [loo] or Llll]. It may also be noted that [loo] is itself not stable. However, close inspection of the vectors in region A shows that it is impossible for an axial orientation within A to rotate outside its boundary. Hence after heavy compression, all orientations from A and some from C are expected to form a diffuse band in the [100] vicinity. By far the largest region is B. Here all orientations rotate to [lll], which is a truly stable position. Thus the [111] texture component is expected to be rather sharp. For the case of (112 }( 111) slip, Fig. 2, region C is enlarged at the expense of A, with B about the same as for {110}( 111) slip. A significant difference, however, is that [loo], as well as [Ill], is now truly stable. Fig. 3 shows the results of slip on {123}( 111) systems. Region B is substantially enlarged at the expense of C, with A being intermediate in size between the {110}(111) and {112}(111) cases. Like the case of {110)( 111) slip, [100] is itself unstable. However, the lattice rotations here are confined to less than 5 deg; hence it may be considered "stable" for practical purposes. Finally, Fig. 4 shows the results of mixed slip. Here region B is the largest, and C the smallest, of all the cases considered. Both [loo] and [ill] are stable. The behavior of the three corner positions is, in fact, identical to the case of {112)( 111) slip, Fig. 2; it turns out that in these positions for the mixed slip case, all the active slip systems (based on Taylor&apos;s criterion) belong to pure {112}( 111) .4 In summing up the results for the four modes of

Adding fuel to the fire were several significant discoveries: The Date Creek Basin of western Arizona, the McDermitt caldera of northern Nevada, and Tallahassee Creek in Colorado&apos;s intermontane basin. Advances in solution mining haw resulted in deeper drilling on the Texas Coastal Plain, and the price of uranium has encouraged widespread exploration in frontier areas and non-sandstone environments.

IN my opinion, the concentration of minerals by flotation is the most interesting problem in ore-dressing, and will command eventually far more consideration than it has at present. For many ores it furnishes a complete method of concentration absolutely independent of specific gravity, and thus simplifies the milling of many difficult combinations. Not having to recognize the influence of specific gravity, we are also able to dispense with some of the complications resulting from classifying-conditions. Where flotation cannot be used for a complete separation of the minerals from the gangue, it will be found, in nearly all cases, to save those portions which are generally lost by reason of their fine state of division. For this reason, it should be looked upon mainly as an aid to general concentration, although there are many ores so well adapted to flotation that more than 90 per cent. of the valuable metals can be recovered from them in one operation by this process. In presenting the results of my investigations in. flotation, I have endeavored to theorize as little as possible. That side of the subject has been extensively discussed by others. My earliest work with flotation was done in 1895, when I used various oils, grease, soap, etc., with results that were remarkable. I did not realize then that with water alone equally good separations could be made. Up to 1906, my endeavors were confined to attempts to keep the concentrates on the tables well wetted and away from exposure to the air. In common with others, I observed that when there was any obstruction in. the wash-water on the table of sufficient size to divert the water to either side, the concentrates collected, and, on exposure to the air, would promptly float away. This convinced me that the sulphides were all good " swimmers," and that if,

Definition of Ae 1.—-Just as we call A 1 of rising temperature Ac 1, and that of falling temperature Ar 1, so we may give the symbol Ae 1 to the equilibrium position of A 1. Preliminary Assumptions.—In deciding what weight to assign the various data, and indeed what data are to count, three assumptions should be made. These are : 1. The corollary from the phase rule, that the temperature of Ae 1 is constant and independent of the carbon content, though, of course, it may be changed by the presence of other elements. 2. That because neither in heating nor in cooling can the transformatioil begin before the temperature reaches Ae 1, though it may be delayed by lag till after the temperature has passed beyond Ae 1, therefore Ae 1 should be at or below the observed beginning of Ac 1 and at or above the observed beginning of Ar 1, and, a fortiori, it should be at or below the observed maximum of Ac 1, and at or above the observed maximum of Ar 1. It may be necessary to take these maxima into consideration in view of the experimental difficulty of detecting these beginnings. 3. Because of the extraordinary degree of lag in the immediate neighborhood of Ae 1, as proved by Brayshaw, little weight should be attached even to the most conclusive evidence that the transformation has not occurred on reaching, or even staying at, a given temperature, because that failure to occur may always be due to lag. Evidence that the transformation has occurred, or has even begun, at a given temperature deserves incomparably greater weight. In other words, the temperature may pass beyond Ae 1 without inducing the &apos; transformation, but the transformation cannot be induced except by

FIFTEEN years ago Dr. Manning published a paper in "Petroleum Development and Technology" on &apos;.Fundamental Research Relating to Petroleum." He tabulated for several industries "the proportion of their present success which can be fairly attributed to the application of information and processes obtained by scientific research," giving petroleum a score of 7 compared to 100 for the electrical and coal-tar industries. Today the petroleum industry as a whole and the producing groups both have raised their score beyond the majority and are climbing toward the top. Present practices are being developed both by fundamental research and the application of the research method in field operation.

SPEED is essentiaI in this war program and it is hard to keep up with developments. When the title of this paper was chosen, the contemplated magnesium production for which plants were then under construction was some 200,000 tons of metal per year or sixty times the 3350-ton production in prewar 1939. A few- days later an analysis of the President&apos;s 185,000-plane pro-gram, incendiary bomb schedules, and the additional requirements of the Army. Navy and Maritime Commission made it apparent that a much greater amount of magnesium must be provided in 1943. The new figures are huge but the censor will not per-mit their disclosure.

The New York talc deposits of commercial importance are in St. Lawrence and Lewis counties, in the northwest Adirondack Mountains (Fig 1). All of the deposits are of pre-Cambrian age and occur within highly deformed and recrystallized marble of the Grenville series. The deposits in St. Lawrence County, near Gouverneur, are the largest and most productive of their type known in the Western Hemisphere. In 1948 the seven mines which are in operation will produce about 130,000 tons of ground talc. All talc production in Lewis County is from one mine. There the annual production ranges from 15,000 to 30,000 tons. These so called talcs of New York State include earth materials of differ- ent chemical and mineral compositions. In general the mineral talc is sub- ordinate in amount to other minerals in both the Gouverneur and Natural Bridge deposits.

THE dislocation theory of plastic flow originated in 1928, when Prandtl1 suggested that the internal damping of metals of plastic origin might arise from the motion of a crystalline imperfection. Following this, Dehlinger2 employed a similar imperfection in a theory of recrystallization. The first detailed theoretical discussions were those of E. Orowan3 and G. I. Taylor4 in 1934. The resulting theory was gen- eralized by J. M. Burgers5 in 1939. Mott and Nabarro, in England, and Seitz and Read,6 in the United States, started an extensive examination of the atomic theory of dislocations in the period between 1939 and 1941. However, this development was arrested by the mar and was not taken up again until after 1945. Since 1946, the field has been the object of very intense activity, particularly in the United States and England. Dislocations are beautiful and intricate imperfections; they are sufficiently complicated to account for the great variety of phenomena encountered in the field of plastic flow. Above all, the dislocation concept enables us to understand how a metal or other plastic solid can deform inelastically under very small stresses at temperatures far below the melting point. It has been shown for an important class of complex transition intermetallic compounds (a, P, R, 6, and p phases) characterized by "normal" coordination [CN12 (icosahedral), CN14, CN15, CN16/ that interatomic distances nay be calculated to a good approximation as the sum of characteristic atomic radii. Two radii, one for major ligands and one for minor ligmds, are specified for each atom, except in the case of CN12 where only a miaaor-ligand radius is specified. The same appears to be true of transition-metal phases of simpler struc-ture: Laves phases (CN12, CN16), and p-tungsten phases (CN12, CN14). In the case of known examples of the more complex phases, a simple rule is given which specifies these radii. However, only a fraction of the known examples of the simpler phases obey this rule closely. To include the latter phases the rule may be modified by considering the radii as linear functions of the weighted average of the Pauling CN12 radii of the two kinds of atonzs, with the radii weighted according to the over-all chemical composition of the alloy. With very few exceptions interatomic distances for both tlze complex and the simpler transition phases can b$ predicted with this modified rule to within 0.06A. ManY intermetallic compounds are known of composition A,By, in which A is a transition element to the left of the manganese column in the periodic table and B is a transition element in or to the right of it. Frequently the coordination numbers (CN) found in these compounds are CN12 (icosahedral), CN14, CN15, and CN16 (called "normal" coordinations by Frank and Kasperl). Well-known examples are the cubic and hexagonal Laves phases which have CN12 and CN16, and the 0-tungsten (CrsO) phases which have CN12 and CN14. In the more complicated (often ternary) phases, such as the a phase,2 the Beck phases p3 and R~, the 6 phase,5 and the p p atoms occur with CN12, CN14, CN15, and (except for a) CN16; in many cases several crystallographically independent atoms of one particular CN occur in the asymmetric unit. A large number of independent interatomic distances are found in these complicated phases, varying from 20 in the a phase to 94 in the 6 phase. These distances show a large spread; they vary, for example, from 2.358 to 3.278A in the 6 phase. In our analysis of these distances we found that in each of these compounds every atomic position can be characterized by either one or two radii. The CN12 positions are characterized by a single radius, The higher coordinated positions are characterized by two radii, namely: the CN14 positions by 4 in the direction of the twelve "5-coordinated" ligands3 (called &apos;minor" by Frank and Kasperl) and by r:, in the direction of the two "6-coordi-nated" ligands (called "major" by Frank and Kasper); the CN15 positions by r15 for the twelve minor and r:, for the three major ligands; the CN16 positions by rlE for the twelve minor and r:, for the four major ligands. We have expressed the experimentally determined interatomic distances in observational equations as the sums of the appropriate pairs of these characteristic radii and the value of these radii have been determined by the method of least Squares. Despite their wide range, the interatomic distances could then be predicted by the sums of these atomic radii with an average deviation in any one compound of 0.06A or less. The results are summarized in Table I. Inspection of the radii thus obtained shows that in the structures in Table I the radii (in A) are given to a first approximation by the simple relationship: Where CN is the coordination number (12, 14, 15, or 16), and A = 1 for major ligands and = 0 for minor ligands. The interaLomic distances can be predicted within about 0.1A by sums of these atomic radii. Another phase belonging in this group with CN12, 14, 15, and 16 is the y phase & B7, in which A is molybdenum or tungsten and B is iron or cobalt. Recently the M%C phase has been refinedE and the observed distances also agree well with those calculated with Eq. [I]. (In the original determination of the structure of W6FeV7 the F$(II)-W(II1) distance was erroneously given as 2.84A, but we have recalculated it fro? the published parameters and found it to b? 2.57i4, in good agreement with the value of 2.6A predicted with Eq. METHODS in colorimetry are based on the assumption that the intensity of the color of a definite volume of solution is directly proportional to the quantity of the color-producing substance&apos; present. In the preparation and examination of colored solutions there are three ways in which the depth of color may be varied. These variables are; (1) the quantity of the coloring matter, (2) the quantity of the solvent, or the dilution, and (3) the thickness or depth of that portion of the solution examined. With these three variables as a basis, three general methods in colorimetry have been devised, all of which have been used in the determination of carbon in steel. In the first method, the quantity of the solution is kept the same for both the unknown steel and the standard, and the sections compared are of equal thickness, while the quantity of the standard is varied until the color obtained is of the same intensity as that produced by a definite quantity of the unknown steel. In laboratories where this method is used there is pre¬pared and kept for permanent use a series of solutions with varying amounts of the standard, representing the percentages of carbon from the lowest to the highest demanded in that laboratory. These standard solutions are kept in bottles, or test-tubes of equal diameter, and are arranged in series from the faintest to the most intense color, so that it is a simple matter to find the place of the unknown steel in the series, when the solution is of a definite volume and is contained in a tube of the same diameter as the standard tubes. IN 1880, the late James Douglas, LL.D., was superintendent of the Chemical Copper Co., operating the Hunt & Douglas process for the treatment of the siliceous copper ores of the Jones mine at Phoenixville, Pa. In conjunction with this a refining furnace was operated. After correspondence with Ben Williams, of Bisbee Ariz., who was commencing the mining and smelting of the Copper Queen ore. Dr. Douglas decided-to make his first journey to Arizona. While making plans for the trip lie visited a friend in Philadelphia, a .Mr. Logan, a prominent lawyer. He, through Professor Treadwell, brother of the discoverer of the great Treadwell gold mine of Douglas Island, Alaska, had an option with his min¬ing partner, Mr. Lenig, on the Eureka and Wade Hampton claims near the headwaters of the Verde River in Yavapai County, Arizona. These two claims, later the source of practically all of the wealth of the Jerome district, were then owned by C. P. Head and Co. Prescott merchants. Hugo Richards, banker, and formerly sutler at Camp Apache; Rod and John McKinnon prospectors and Nova Scotians; and perhaps one or two &apos;other owners of minor interests. Mr. Logan, hearing of Dr. Douglas intended trip to Bisbee, asked him to go first to see the two mining prospects, and this, Douglas, in need of the $500 fee, agreed to do as the time on the option on the claims was running short.

The lode-formation of the Bendigo gold-field was described in a former paper.* It presents a striking identity of arrangement with the general geological structure of the region, which is one of comparative simplicity. Direct Versus Indirect Control of the Economy FACED with placing the nation in a state of partial mobilization, it is expedient that it be done in such a way that the national economy and productive capacity are strengthened. The immediate adoption of direct controls such as Axed prices and wages, rationing, manpower controls, and allocations conceivably could destroy the basis of our free economy. Controls breed more of the same and since the present program is a long term project, it should be undertaken within our present business framework so far as possible or until total war makes it impossible.
