STANFORD UNIVERSITY, CALIFORNIA Our activities for the year 1918-19 have closed with the coming of summer. It has been a most successful year in many respects, especially in the reorganization necessary after the war conditions had passed. An INITIATION SCENE AT STANFORD UNIVERSITY. "old-days" initiation was held on the Stanford campus by the Society a few weeks ago. The current status of the US lead and zinc industries was reviewed by J. G. McCullough, president of Amax Lead and Zinc Inc. He reported that in the US, lead and zinc are separate industries because of the nature of mineralization. The large Mississippi-type zinc deposits are practically lead-free, and while the new lead belt in Missouri has some zinc content, it does not have the same favorable economic impact as in the complex massive sulfide ore bodies being developed elsewhere.

THE diffusivities of gold in polycrystalline copper have been determined in the temperature range from 700° to 1000°C by the utilization of the neutron-activation method. Martin, Johnson, and ~saro' used this method for their investigation of the diffusion of gold into copper at 375° and 550°C for 59 days in order to circumvent the experimental difficulties imposed by the 2.7-day half-life of Au-198. Geological investigation and research have contributed greatly in making industrial minerals the basis of an important industry in the state. North Carolina contains a wide variety of industrial minerals and rock. Mica, feldspar, kaolin, halloysite, talc, pyrophyllite, sillimanite, and spodumene are used to illustrate the progress being made.

The attempt will he made in this note to restate these items of cost, so that the information may be rendered perhaps more accessible to our members than in its present place of record, and also in order that the items may be more intelligibly compared among themselves, or with similar items in other cases.
