Thermal conductivity measurements of intact rock specimens do not reflect the effects of natural rock discontinuities, and large scale insitu tests are location specific and costly. To allow extrapolation of laboratory measurements to rock masses with discontinuities, the effects of discontinuities on rock thermal conductivity were measured using divided-bar techniques. The introduced discontinuities lowered the thermal conductivity in all cases, and conductivity decreased systematically with increasing roughness of the discontinuity. Conductivity increased with increasing pressure on the discontinuity.

To obtain a negative determination for prime farmlands in its approved lignite surface mine permit application, Phillips Coal Co. conducted a soils mapping effort and a historic land use survey. In addressing the justification for topsoil substitute materials, the company relied on results of a geochemical evaluation to demonstrate improved drainage, trafficability, and fertility. It also relied on results of field test plots. Post-mining land use was determined through the use of overlay maps considering existing land use, vegetation, and historic prime farmland. The reclamation plan incorporated these elements plus indicator species, existing vegetation, and wildlife needs.

Several months ago, some specimens of the minerals occurring at the Etta tin mine, Dakota, were received at the laboratory of the Cornell University. On examining the heavy brownish-black portion, which I presumed was the tin-stone, I was surprised to find only a faint indication of tin. Further investigation showed the mineral to be tantalite. On searching carefully all the fragments received, a considerable quantity of that mineral was found, and only a single streak of cassiterite, which was attached to a mass of spodumene. In an effort to improve coal-mine safety, a spectrum analyzer was used to make a detailed examination of the vibration frequencies produced by tapping a mine roof. We show that spectral analysis can be used to distinguish between "solid" and "drummy" roofs to a degree approaching that of the human ear, but it can reveal little about roof-slab thickness or attachment. We recommend research into the utility of augmenting human hearing in roof testing and into utilizing microseismic emissions to help assess roof integrity.

Messrs. Tobelmann and Potter are to he congratulated upon the excellent way in which they have set forth the workings of the process as applied at Ajo. Few people in the industry today are competent to comment on the O.G. system for vessel covers, but with papers as well prepared as Mr. Bradley's we will soon be well informed. I would like to direct these comments to Mr. Klaes of Ford Motor Company. Mr. Klaes' description of their steaming hood agrees with our experience at Weirton. We have been able to stay within design limits and, as a result, have had few problems with our auxiliary equipment. Our main problem, as with Ford, has been thinning of our vessel cover tubes. At Weirton, controlled circulation, high pressure boilers are in use as heat recovery units above the BOP vessels. The boilers are provided with "off cycle' oil firing equipment. A Venturi type wet gas scrubber follows the boiler to complete the vessel draft system.

The results of a preliminary investigation undertaken to explore the possibility of treating potential in sulfide mineral flotation systems as an external variable are reported in this note. Two different methods were used to assess floatability. One involved measurement of contact angles at a mineral electrode in reagent solutions, and the other involved direct measurement of flotation recoveries in a Hallimond tube flotation cell that had been modified such that mineral particles were in electrical contact with a gold electrode. Fairly good correlation between the contact angles and flotation recoveries has been obtained.

When I presented at the Chicago Meeting of the Institute, in May, 1884, a paper on Hadfield's manganese steel,* which had about that time been brought to the notice of steel manufacturers, I promised to furnish some physical tests of the steel for publication in the Transactions. The fulfilment of the promise then made has been delayed by various circumstances; but I have recently been put in possession of tests of this steel carefully made at the Woolwich, England, arsenal. Messrs. Hadfield & Co. prepared for the arsenal a series of twelve test-pieces, made from the same heat. An analysis of the steel gave the following results: Carbon,.........73 Silicon,.........37 Sulphur,.........06 Phosphorus,. .08 Manganese,...... 9.83 The test-pieces had been heated to a white heat and plunged into cold water prior to being put into the machine.
