Cobalt recovery from arsenical concentrates by pressure leaching and reduction involves special methods and operating problems. Principal steps in the process are auto-oxidation acid leaching under pressure, filtration of the tailings, purification of the solution, hydrogen reduction of the ammoniacal solution, and electrical furnacing for sulfur removal and granulating the metal. Extracting cobalt metal from arsenical ores has presented a major metallurgical problem for many years. In acquiring the Blackbird mine near Salmon City, Idaho in 1943 Calera Mining Co. accepted the challenge to solve this problem.

Microstructures and mineral chemistry of amphiboles and plagioclases from two spatially related mylonite zones at the Grenville front are significantly different, suggesting different physical conditions (including temperature) for the formation of the two zones. Oxygen isotopes indicate multiple episodes of fluid-rock interaction, consistent with previously determined mylonitization temperatures and postulated tectonic evolution of the area.

PLANS for the World's Engineering Congress in Japan are rapidly taking shape. The Congress itself will be held in Tokyo in the week beginning Oct. 30, and will be followed by a second week of short excursions to points of interest, and this, in turn, by a two weeks' excursion through the Inland Sea and to Manchuria. Aside from the time each may desire to spend in Japan, from 30 to 42 days, according to route, must be allowed for travel from New York to Tokyo and return, with correspondingly' shorter time from intermediate points. During the nineteen months in which our country was actively engaged in the war, the United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corpn. expanded the shipbuilding capacity of the United States from an unimportant position among the world's producers of ocean-going tonnage to first place. At the same time it increased the overseas merchant fleet of the United States from a negligible quantity to second place. The shipbuilding program has been greatly reduced since the signing of the armistice. There have been suspended or canceled contracts for 754 ships aggregating 3,797,825 deadweight tons, which would have cost $797,564,276 to complete. The cost of canceling these contracts will be about $202,853,456, and the saving effected by cancelations will approximate $594,710,820.

Consolidation Coal Co.'s Renton mine, a 680 000-t/y (750,000-stpy) underground operation located in western Pennsylvania, has reduced the time required for overcast construction in its advancing operations by adopting a prebolting technique followed by multiple blasting. In the past, the mine's overcasts had been excavated by the continuous mining machines used to advance the section. More recently, the overcasts were blasted down and then rebolted with a stoper drill. The new system, using a two-part combination bolt, has proven very successful in speeding up overall construction time and providing more positive horizontal control in blasting. The prebolting approach allows the roof to be blasted down and loaded out without the need for rebolting the shot-out area.

This article in all probability will raise some serious doubts as to whether the coal industry-without a national, long-range commitment to coal-can, or should, attempt to meet the capital demands necessary to double coal production in the next 10 years. AMAX Coal, incidentally, doubled its annual coal productive capacity in the past five years from 11 million tons in 1969 to 22 million tons in 1974. Our 1973 annual report stated that we were aiming to triple our 1973 capacity to 50 million tpy by 1978.

Terminal facilities were recently completed at Conneaut, Ohio, on Lake Erie, for the Bessemer and Erie Railroad Co. (a wholly-owned subsidiary of U.S. Steel Corp.) which may become the blue- print for all future coal shipping terminals. Design and engineering of the new facility was by Soros Associates, New York, N. Y. Unlike terminals of conventional design, for example, those at Toledo and Newport News, which load coal directly from the railroad car to the vessel, the new installation passes the coal into temporary storage, loads the vessel from temporary storage and provides alternative reclaiming systems in case of major system failure.

Garth Crosby has written an excellent geologic description of the deposits surrounding the Gem stocks in the Coeur d'Alene district. The ore deposits in the area of the Gem stocks may hold the key to the age and mineralization history of the entire Coeur d'Alene district. A recent isotopic study of the Coeur d'Alene district in this laboratory illustrates that a classical geologic interpretation of these deposits, with its implications for the whole district, may lead to erroneous conclusions. For this reason it seems pertinent to submit a summary of these results and an interpretation of the mineralizing history of the Coeur d'Alene districts.

PLANS for development of the San Manuel ore- body have been worked out and are progressing parallel with construction of the surface plant. This property lies in the Old Hat mining district, Pinal County, Ariz., about a mile south of Tiger where the St. Anthony mine once produced gold, molybdenum, vanadidn, lead, and zinc. Two development shafts have been completed and serve as ingress for preparation of the 1475 haulage level and 1415 grizzly level. Three other shafts are being put down. The Nos. 3A and 3B shafts will provide the ore hoisting facilities. The No. 4 shaft, now being sunk, will be at the main mine service and supply yard, with primary function to provide the mine with supplies.

Speech advocating a new law of the sea-the "common heritage of mankind." The 3rd Law of the Sea (L0S) Conference was held in Caracas in mid-1974, and a fourth UN conference, scheduled for mid-March in Geneva, will once again attempt to produce a cohesive LOS Convention to take up where the 1958 Geneva Convention left off. The 1958 Convention specified coastal state resource rights on a continental shelf out to a water depth of 200 m-a supposed technological limitation at the time. But the surge of offshore petroleum drilling and the advent of the nodule resource have long since exploded beyond the 200-m limit.
