Surface mine operators often gamble that the savings gained from elimination of haul-road subbase preparation will offset any potential loss in production due to deteriorating roads. According to the authors of a manual on haul-road construction, this practice yields results that are almost always undesirable. The lack of suitable weight-bearing material under the road surface permits extensive rutting, sinkage, and overall deterioration of the roadway, and a great deal of maintenance work will be needed to keep the road usable. In addition, say Walter W. Kaufman of Skelly and Loy, and James C. Ault, USBM Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center, adverse road conditions pose a serious threat to vehicular controllability and create unsafe haulage road segments.

Abstract-A continuous survey of radon gas was made in two interconnecting stopes in a southwestern U. S. uranium mine to determine how the various phases of the mining cycle affected the radon concentration. The radon was monitored continuously with five detectors. One detector monitored the intake air, one the exhaust air, and three the stope air. The radon concentrations present during slushing, blasting, and exhaust fan shutoff were compared with concentrations on a nonwork day as a base level. Inside the stope, the radon concentration increased about 40% during slushing and 425% after blasting. Intake air radon increased 1600% and the stope air increased 550% while the surface exhaust fan was off.

Drilling activity in Nebraska continued to decline during 1944. Nine tests for oil and gas were completed during the year and four wells were drilling at the close of the year. Four wells were drilled in Richardson County, three in Hitchcock County and single wells were drilled or drilling in Butler, Gage, Holt, Nemaha and Scottsbluff Counties. Only one of the completions resulted in commercial pro- duction, the others being abandoned as dry holes. A number of stratigraphic test holes were drilled in the state by the Stanolind Oil and Gas Co. and the Sinclair-Prairie Oil Co., in Johnson, Otoe, Chase, Dundy and Garden Counties. No new fields were discovered during 1944 but the limits of the Barada field, Richardson County, was extended a short distance southward. Oil production continued to drop and about two thirds as much oil was produced in 1944 as in 1943.

Kennecott Copper Corp. has sub- mitted a proposal to the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission for a joint experiment to determine if a contained underground nuclear explosion can be used to fracture a low-grade copper ore deposit to recover the copper by in-situ leaching. If authorized, safety and technical studies in the field would be undertaken to determine whether such an experiment could be conducted with full protection for public health and safety. The proposed experiment, known as "Sloop," would be part of the AEC's Plowshare Program to develop peaceful uses of nuclear explosives. As now visualized, the project involves the detonation of about a 20-kiloton nuclear explosive at a depth of 1200 ft.

As a result of Engineering Council's request to the Director of the Census, the National Service Committee has been successful in effecting a reclassification of engineers so that all technical men will be listed as such and they will be separate and distinct from the non-technical engi-neers. Thus, the next census will bring an enumeration of all technical engineers together as one unit under the main headings of civil, mech-anical, electrical and raining; architects also will be enumerated separately. This will enable the engineering profession, the Government or any other interested organization to know exactly how many technical men there are in the United States and in each state. The enumeration will also include non-technical engineers, except that there will be no such heading and in order to get the totals of non-technical men all of the various grades of this classification would have to be sorted out and added.

In determilling the relative rate and in fi~lding the point where different inlpurities containecl in copper-matte are eliminated during the process of a converter-blow, the follo~ving results were obtainecl : A converter was selected which was starting on its sccolld charge. The first charge after lining had finished its copper " hot," and conseqaently no copper was adhering to the sides of the lining. The mining industry has been a leader in the application of ultrasonic level monitoring systems, utilizing the "sonar-in-air" concept for the accurate inventorying of material not only as an end within itself, but going on to activate alarms, turn off feeders, operate tripper systems, and totalize the inventory in numerous bins as well as other more sophisticated applications. The virtues of ultrasonic level monitoring are no doubt appreciated by most users. However, to be of maximum service to the expanding mining industry, the manufacturer must be fair in pointing out ultrasonic's limitations as well as its virtues. The limitations can be surmounted with new technology and through a proper understanding of the principles of operation and application.

An internationally recognized authority on geology and mineral resource development, Dr. Osborn won his Ph.D. at the California Institute of Technology. WITH the present mobilization program in full swing and the enrollment in engineering colleges dropping off, many solutions are offered to relieve the shortage of trained men in the engineering profession. Industry can absorb about 30,000 engineers annually, according to the Engineers Joint Council, and forecasts indicate that the number graduating will have dropped from 38,000 in 1951 to about 12,000 in 1954. If this condition were to continue there would probably not be enough people with technical training to run industry in four or five years.
