The Quebrada Blanca copper/molybdenum prospect lies on a dissected plateau in the high Andes of Northern Chile. The Superior Oil-Falconbridge Group began exploration of the Property in 1977 under a joint venture foreign investment agreement with the Chilean government. Quebrada Blanca is a relatively high grade secondarily enriched porphry copper deposit. Primary mineralization occurred 38 million years ago and accompanied quartz monzonite intrusive. Early disseminated Primary mineralization was followed by hydrothermal mineralization, mineralized breccia, and post-mineral faulting. After supergene enrichment Quebrada Blanca was buried under late Tertiary gravels and then partially re-exposed in Quaternary time. During the past five years, a successful exploration program has developed an open-pit mining reserve, provided samples for bulk metallurgical testing, and located more than adequate supplies of water for future operations. The main orebody is amenable to conventional metallurgical treatment and contains more than 400 Mt (441 million st) of recoverable open-pit ore at about a 1:1 overall stripping ratio. The average millhead grade during the first six years of operations will exceed 1.5% Cu, plus recoverable molybdenum values. Several hundred million tons of additional reserves are available in the surrounding districts

THE problem of reaction rates in the open-hearth process is essentially that of trying to form a fairly clear picture of the "chemical mechanisms" in the bath. Quantitative data on reaction rates would perhaps not be of much practical importance even if they were available; however, what few approximate data there are can be used in combination with data given in Chapters 16 and 17 to sketch a picture of the "chemical mechanics" of the open-hearth process that is consistent with essentially all the present available evidence. The result may later be found incorrect in many details but even so it will illustrate certain useful methods for obtaining a clearer understanding of the process. Consistent with the treatment in Chapter 15, but in simpler terms, we may say that chemical reactions in general involve the following elements or steps : 1. The reacting molecules are mixed together in space in such fashion as to favor collisions among them. 2. Units of what is usually an intermediate molecular arrangement called an activated complex are formed at a certain rate, depending on temperature and concentrations. 3. .These activated complex units decompose into the reaction products (this step usually assumed to be so rapid as never to limit the over-all process). 4. In any of these steps, heat energy may have to flow into, or away from, the reaction zone to permit the reaction to proceed. 5. The products of reaction will usually have to move out of the way to permit further reaction. The temperature factor enters mainly through step 2, and its effect is very marked. (What is called temperature is really the mean energy content of all the molecules of the substance involved; at any one temperature a certain proportion of the molecules will have much higher energy content than the mean value.) The writer apologizes for presenting this very elementary analysis of one aspect of proration, but a search of the literature failed to disclose any concrete illustrations of the effect of various proration formulas upon the allowable oil produced by tracts of different sizes. Many engineers have doubtless made somewhat similar calculations and are fully acquainted with the results. The various allocation formulas that are in use are based on one or more of the following factors: (1) wide-open well potential, (2) potential through an orifice, (3) uniform well allowable, (4) acreage, (5) sand thickness, (6) bottom-hole pressure, (7) productivity index, and (8) volumetric displacement. Of these, the unrestricted potential formula, or open-flow test, and the uniform well allowable are commonly regarded by engineers as those least likely to give each producer his proportionate share of the oil or gas, as represented either by acreage or by sand thickness, or both, except when the wells are located on tracts of large size. Unless the mechanical equipment that may be used during the potential test and the method of taking the test are both specified, the net result of the potential formula is to practically force the operators to use special equipment and adopt special procedures prior to and during the potential test, so as to secure the largest possible allowables. Much ingenuity and skill have been devoted to this,problem, but the general effect is to permit excessive allowables for very small tracts, and stimulate unnecessary drilling. It is interesting to compare some of the high yields from the Wilcox horizon at Oklahoma City with each other, as an illustration of the effect of an allocation factor based solely on potential (Table 5). One of the glaring instances is a well on a ½-acre lease, which had produced, as of September 1936, at the rate of almost 3,000,000 bbl. per acre. This is at least twice as many barrels as could have been present under the property if the reservoir had consisted of a tank of oil 200 ft, deep and 56 acre in area. Numerous combinations of acreage, potential, bottom-hole pressure, sand thickness, etc., have been proposed and are in use in various fields.

Flexibility is the keynote in designing modern exploration drills that and mobility. Add to the flexibility of individual drills the wide range of models, and the man looking for a drill has ample choice today. Weight? Choose from models as light as 50 lb or as heavy as 10,000 lb. Hole capacity? From less than 1 in. for smallest core drills to 20 in. or more for auger types. Transportation? The lightest go by packsack (in fact, that is one trade name) ; others are designed to go by Jeep, truck, on skids or are built on light trailers. Power? Select air power, gasoline or diesel engine, electric motor, or use a power take-off from the vehicle on which the drill is mounted. Drill bits offer almost as much variety as the drilling machines themselves. Many drills are suitable for a variety of uses, and often adapt to several types of bits with ease. Some of the types available are: diamond core, diamond reaming, rotary, auger, shot, and special soil sampling tools.

THE new 4800-ton fine-grinding plant at the Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines property at Timmins, in the Porcupine district of northern Ontario, went into operation in November 1937, and represents the culmination of an experimental program. The plant is a moderately low rectangular building of hollow tile on a steel frame, large enough to house four 7 by 15-ft. ball mills, with a 12 by 27-ft. classifier beside each mill. At one end is space for the addition of another mill and classifier or a mill and classifier for the regrinding of table concentrates. This regrinding is now done in the old grinding department of the main mill building. Also within the new building are the four 6-in. sand pumps for lifting the product from the low-dis- charge ball mills up to the classifier feed launders and the containers and appurtenances of a complete dust-collecting system. Together with the usual overhead crane, these constitute the major units of equipment within the new plant. The location is at the lower end of the main mill buildings toward the old tailings pond, now so neatly leveled off and sodded to rival the very best of our own W.P.A. projects. Close by the new grinding plant is a large dome-shaped structure-the new fine-ore bin designed arid built by Mr. Longmore and the Hollinger milling and engineering staffs. There are four separate automatically loaded inclined belt conveyors leading up from the bottom of the bin to the grinding plant. Each belt is equipped with a recording weightometer, in the grinding building. The whole structure and the machinery within it give the impression of permanence and a carefully integrated design with close attention to details, giving the operators every advantage for consistently good work. The many ideas and opinions behind this achievement were all ably organized and executed by the Hollinger milling and engineering staffs, anti not a few were directly initiated by them. Excellent cooperation was afforded by the Hollinger staff to the engineers helping to conduct the grinding and classification test program. It was the author's privilege

The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 9 P.M. on all week-days, except holidays, from September 1 to June 30, and from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. during July and August. The Library contains about 55,000 volumes, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive special attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining-maps, and to furnish general information as to the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable-shape. The members of the Institute can be of service to the Library by forwarding copies of mining-reports, maps privately issued, and similar material, which will be classified, indexed, and made available to other members. Suggestions for additions to the Library, either by purchase or personal solicitation as gifts, will be welcomed. It is hoped that members while in the city will use the Library freely, and assurance is given that most careful service will be rendered to them.

A conceptual model (MAGSEP) is described to simulate the beneficiation characteristics of a drum magnetic separator in terms of the probability of an individual grain being recovered in the magnetic concentrate. This probability is determined as a function of particle magnetic composition and magnetic field strength and is modified by particle size and the separator operating conditions. The model predicts the size, magnetic grade and distributions of magnetic and gangue minerals in the concentrate and tailings produced by the drum separator. The configuration of the magnetic concentration circuit may be altered to permit single or double drum units in parallel or series operation. The characteristics of the feed material, in terms of a magnetic parameter, are essential in permitting the determination of individual grain recovery probabilities upon which the model is based. Thus the model requires input data relating to the distribution of composite grains in terms of magnetic grade and particle size. To illustrate the use of the conceptual model an example is given for the beneficiation of New Zealand iron sands.

The following discussion occurred on the afternoon of Sept,. 22, 1930, as part of the fall meeting of the Iron and Steel Division at Chicago. About seventy-five men attended this session. C. B. Murray opened the meeting, as follows: C. B. Murray, Cleveland, Ohio.—It is very encouraging to see so many here this afternoon to discuss this important matter of beneficiation. The producers of ore, I am sure, are anxious to furnish the grade of ore that the consumer wants. The consumer sometimes wants that which cannot be economically produced and often the producer cannot understand why the consumer wants certain things. It was to bring together these two interested parties that this meeting was proposed. I was appointed the chairman of the meeting, chiefly because I happened to be the chairman of the Iron Ore Committee of the Institute. I know a little about iron ore but have not perhaps kept up with the times in blast-furnace practice. I am asking Mr. Sweetser, who is well informed from both sides, to take over the meeting and carry on the discussion. R. H. Sweetser, Columbus, Ohio.—We want to have a free discussion between the iron-ore men and the blast-furnace men as to just what we are trying to reach in the beneficiation of iron ores. Many of those present have had a great deal of experience. There are men here from the ranges who have been passing through the experimental stage of beneficiation of iron ores, and there are some who have already gone on to commercial production. We have reached the point where the beneficiation of iron ore is important to the whole iron and steel industry. The connection between iron-ore beneficiation and the cleaning of coal is so close that I think we can profit by working very close to the coal people. Some Aspects of the Iron-ore Situation W. G. At high temperatues and reduced oxygen pressuves, molybdenum silicicles oxidize to form SiO(g) vathev than a passivating SiO2 film. This is a sevious problem for low-pressure applications of sili-cide-coated rejvactory tnetals. As oxiclalion pvoceeds, the higher oxidntion potential of silicon initially suppresses oxidation of molybdenum and silicon is depleted near the surface. Eventually, silicon depletion causes secondary passivation (SiO2) mid an active to passiue transition in oxidntion behavior at moderately low pressures. At very low pressures, silicon depletion continues until steady-state oxidation of both silicon and rnolyhdenum can proceed at rates propovtional to their initial stoicliiorrzetvies. Ohsel-vations of 'oxidatiou-rate belzcriliov at temperatures from 1101° to 1700°C and oxygen pressures from 10-7 to 1 at in were made using thermogravimetn'c, X-ray diffraction, and elect?*on-rtric?ro/,vobe techniqrres. The experimental results are in good agreement with calculated lirnits for the various types of behavior that were based on tlievtnochernicnl atzd dffusion rate data for the Mo-Si system. A protective oxide film normally forms during the oxidation of elemental silicon. However, at elevated temperatures and reduced pressures this film is not present and oxidation is rapid. wagnerl has shown that this behavior occurs because SiO(g) is more stable than SiO2. The behavior of the silicides at high temperatures is similar but more complicated. Molybdenum and several silicide compounds are involved and the chemical activity of silicon, or the equivalent silicon vapor pressure, can vary considerably in these phases. Also, diffusion in the silicides resulting from reactions in which a higher silicide is reduced to a lower silicide, or molybdenum containing dissolved silicon, must be considered. EXPERIMENTAL AND ANALYTICAL METHODS Isothermal oxidation experiments were conducted using hot-pressed MoSi2 and Mo5Si3 wafers. Each experiment was conducted at a fixed oxygen pressure by controlling the flow of oxygen in and out of the furnace chamber. Most of the experiments were conducted in a molybdenum-wound tube furnace. Special construction features, including use of a high-purity dense A12O3 refractory tube, permitted operation in high vacuum to 1500°C. Higher temperatures could be obtained at higher working pressures and with a sacrifice of tube lifetime. Temperature was measured with three Pt 6 pct Rh/Pt 30 pct Rh thermocouples and controlled with a proportional controller. Weight changes were monitored with a quartz spring balance. The few experiments, at higher temperatures and low pressures, were conducted in a cold wall vacuum chamber using induction heating with direct susceptance of the sample. Because of the variable levitation effect of the induction coil on the sample, weight changes could not be monitored continuously in these experiments. All samples representing both experimental methods were weighed before and after oxidiation and examined with a microscope and analyzed by X-ray diffraction. The analytical treatment assumes equilibrium at interfaces and uses existing thermodynamic data. For convenience, equilibria are expressed as chemical potentials or as vapor pressures of the gases involved. The resulting differences in equilibrium vapor pressure between adjacent interfaces and between the surface and external atmosphere drive diffusion processes in the solid and gas boundary film, respectively. These diffusion processes govern the rate of oxidation. A bibliography of the sources of thermochemical data for the reactions pertinent to the Mo-Si-O system is given in Table I. Reactions are listed with the sources of free-energy data referenced. Since all of these reactions involve one or more gas species, usually oxygen, a plot of the product-gas chemical potential, -RT In Pg, vs absolute temperature for each reaction is given in Fig. 1. These curves can be used to determine equilibrium vapor pressures or to compare the stability of different compounds in the various gases: O2, Si, SiO, and Moo3,. The data of Table I and Fig. 1 were used to determine the analytical results presented in this paper. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The weight changes for three MoSi, samples oxidized at 1500°C are plotted against time in Fig. 2. The treatments were identical except for the indicated variance of oxygen pressure and each curve represents one of three characteristic types of behavior that were observed. THE milling plant of the Alaska-Gastineau Mining Co. is located at the town of Thane, Alaska, on Gastineau Channel, 4 mi. south of Juneau and directly across the channel from the Ready Bullion mine of the Treadwell mines on Douglas Island. Previous to the organization of the Alaska-Gastineau Mining Co., in 1912, the milling was done at the stamp mill of the Alaska Perseverance Co. located at the mine in Silver Bow Basin. But the contemplated increase in production made it necessary to locate the mill on Gastineau Channel, as not enough water was available at the mine during the winter months, nor was there room for taking care of the large tonnage of tailings that would ultimately be discarded from the mill. CHARACTER OF ORE The gold and silver values occur in quartz lenses associated with pyrrhotite, galena, arsenical pyrites, and zinc blende. These lenses occur in large bodies of slate, schist, and metagabbro, which also carry some valuable metallic contents. With the essential low cost of mining, it was necessary to mine large bodies of low-grade material containing the high-grade streaks. Of the minerals, pyrrhotite, the magnetic sulfide of iron, is predominant, and galena is the next sulfide present in quantity. The gold occurs free and coarse and associated with the iron sulfide in its finer state. The silver occurs with the lead or is alloyed with the gold. A chemical analysis of the ore shows Silver 0.10 oz. Magnesia 0.4 per cent. Silica 59.7 per cent. Sulfur 1.2 per cent. Iron 5.2 per cent. Lead 0.1 per cent. Alumina 21.4 per cent. Zinc 0.2 per cent. Lime 5.0 per cent.

A procedure which makes use of both analog and digital computers has been developed for predicting the pressure-production behavior. of water-drive reservoirs. The electric analyzer is used for matching the past pressure and production history of the reservoir and inferring the physical characteristies of the aquifer. When the history has been matched, a .set of base curves called influence functionce" are derived and the future behavior of the reservoir is calculated from these curves. INTRODUCTION Electric analog methods are particularly well-suited for complex water-drive problems. Like all other methods of analyzing water-drive reservoirs, however, analog methods are subject to certain limitations. One of the more obvious and serious of these results from inaccurate or insufficient knowledge about physical characteristics of the reservoir and aquifer. However, it is not insurmountable because the unknown characteristics can usually be inferred from the reservoir's previous behavior. Simons and Spain have shown that even with scant reservoir data and limited production history, electric analyzer studies can provide useful and reliable results. Aside from this limitation on analyzer predictions, the main disadvantage has been lack of a technique for keeping predictions abreast of latest production forecasts. Pressure behavior of a reservoir depends on the rate at which fluid is withdrawn; it is therefore necessary to specify the future withdrawal schedule before the future pressure behavior can be calculated. Conventionally, the electric analyzer predicts pressure behavior for a specific production schedule. If this schedule is abandoned in favor of some new one, as is frequently the case, either the study must be rerun or results adjusted in some manner. The usual procedure is to predict pressures for several different forecasts covering a wide range of production rates. Pressures for specific rates other than those studied can then be approximated by interpolating between the analyzer predicted curves. However, reliability of this type of prediction is doubtful. This paper describes a technique for predicting future behavior of water-drive reservoirs that retains all advantages of electric analyzer analysis and eliminates the main disadvantage. That is, the analyzer is used conventionally to infer unknown reservoir parameters from the pressure history, but not to predict the future behavior directly. Instead, a derived set of base curves, called influence l'unctions, can be used to calculate future behavior for any production schedule.

A metal is said to be overstrained when it is deformed beyond the elastic limit at a temperature well below the critical range, as in cold working. Quantitatively, overstrain might be considered as that part of the total elastic deformation of the piece of metal, left over after the external load is removed, that added to the permanent deformation due to plastic action will give the total permanent deformation. Ordinarily the effects of this phenomenon, which vary with the internal residual stress probably in accordance with Hooke's law, are more noticeable when the yield point of the metal is exceeded, but they probably also exist to a smaller degree when the load is just large enough to cause the least amount of permanent set. These effects, which we recognize as the result of overstrain, are as follows: 1. An apparent increase of the elastic limit in tension and a decrease of the elastic limit in compression, provided the external load is tensile. The reverse is true when the load is compressive. 2. An elastic after-effeet in which time and temperature are important factors. 3. A state of imperfect elasticity in which Hooke's straight line becomes slightly curved, giving rise to an hysteresis loop. 4. In addition to the apparent increase in the elastic limit, such properties as the hardness, ultimate strength, and resistance to fatigue failure are increased, provided the overstraining has not been carried far enough to make the metal brittle. 5. Correspondingly the ultimate elongation, reduction in area, magnetic quality, ratio of endurance limit (fatigue breaking stress) to elastic limit, and resistance to season cracking (in certain copper alloys) are decreased. The question naturally arises: how do these changes in the properties of a metal resulting from overstrain influence our method of design? The defect in wire known as "cuppiness" has appeared and disappeared from time to time but the exact cause of its appearance or disappearance has not heretofore been known definitely. This defect is not limited to one particular metal or alloy but seems to be found at various times in all of the materials that are drawn into wire. Fig. 1 represents cuppy wire made from an aluminum alloy and Fig. 2 illustrates copper wire that became cuppy in drawing without intermediate annealing. Differences of opinion are current among the manufacturers of wire and in the literature (see bibliography at end of paper), some believing that the source of the trouble lies in segregation in the wire rod, oxides, sulfides, slag, etc.; others that the trouble is created by an unevenness of stress distribution across the section of the wire, usually thought of as being a function of die shape. All of the published work is of a qualitative rather than a quantitative nature. With this in mind, it was deemed advisable to make a study of the shape of the wire-drawing dies, as well as the oxygen content of the copper to be drawn. Experimental After several methods were tried, it was found that by studying the contour of the butt-end of the rod after drawing a measure of the "working" across the section of the wire could be made. The butt-end of the annealed rod was not sheared but was sawed off. The end was then smoothed with a fine file so that the plane of filing was perpendicular to the drawing axis. It is to be noted that this method is not an absolute measure of the distribution of cold working but is a very good indicative means of studying comparative values. The method of examining a tension break in wire was found to be the most sensitive in detecting cuppiness. Other methods, such as microscopic examination of longitudinal sections, X-ray radiographic studies, etching away of outer layers with nitric acid, and fracture by bending, can all be used to identify cuppy wire but the tension break will give the fracture characteristic of cuppiness before any of the other methods can

WHAT DOES "MAGNETIC" MEAN? The word magnetic has several meanings. When used, as it usually is, without qualification one is often unable to tell which meaning is intended. 1. A body is magnetic which has power to attract iron magnetically. Such is a lodestone or magnet, either permanent or not. This is an active sense or meaning in that the body itself does the attracting or is .magnetic. 2. A body is magnetic which may be made to attract iron magnetically, as the iron core of an electro-magnet when not magnetized by the current. This is a potentially active meaning, the body being capable of becoming a magnet. 3. A body is magnetic which has the property of being. attracted by a magnet magnetically. Such are iron, cobalt, nickel, magnetic oxide of iron, magnetic alloys, etc. This is a passive meaning, the attracting being done by the actively magnetic body. With these three meanings to choose from, one must usually make a guess based on previous knowledge as to which is the right one. Would it

This paper discusses a new oil recovery process called the "miscible slug process." This process involves the injection of propane or LPG into the reservoir prior to gas injection. The operating conditions are maintained so that the slug is miscible with both the reservoir oil and the injected gas phase. Thus, a miscible phase displacement is achieved, and high recoveries are obtained from the area of the reservoir contacted. The most striking discovery of the laboratory study which included displacements from cores up to 123 ft in length was that relatively small slugs of LPG are effective over reservoir distances in the miscible displacement of oil. This makes possible the commercial application of the process. The important factors controlling the size of the slug are: (I) reservoir length, (2) reservoir fluid composition, and (3) reservoir pressure at the displacement front. Of lesser importance are the effects of injection rate and porous medium type. Questions which have not been completely answered deal with the effects of gravity and reservoir inhomogeneities on the process. INTRODUCTION One of the major problems facing the oil industry today is recovery of the large fraction of the discovered oil which will remain unrecovered unless some new processes are found. Water flooding has been one successful method used to increase recovery over natural depletion. But even successful water floods may leave 25 to 40 per cent of the pore space filled with residual oil. Recently a process which involves the use of thermal energy has been reported1,'*' which may prove useful in increasing recovery from shallow reservoirs containing highly viscous crudes. This paper deals with a new oil recovery process involving use of miscible phases to displace the oil from the reservoir. Miscible phase displacement oil has been an intriguing idea because the elimination of capillary effects in the reservoir leads to 100 per cent recovery in the areas contacted by the miscible displacing phase. The big deterrent in the past to the practice of miscible phase displacement has been the high cost involved in using large volumes of solvent in the process. The use of high pressure gas to achieve a miscible phase displacement of reservoir oil has been reported4,5 as one economically feasible method. However, this process calls for the maintenance of pressures above 3,000 psi at the dis-placement front. The process described in this paper is not restricted to high reservoir pressures; the only qualification being that the slug of material which is injected into the reservoir must be miscible with both the displaced oil 2nd the displacing phase. Two such cases are the use of an alcohol slug followed by water to achieve a mis-cable water flood, and the use of a low boiling hydrocarbon slug such as propane followed by gas to achieve a miscible gas drive. This paper will deal specifically with the propane dug process. This process will obtain a miscible phase displacement at pressures as low as about 1,200 psi at a reservoir temperature 01 150°F. The process is very simple. The propane displaces oil completely at one front because it is miscible with the oil, and gas displaces the propane completely at a second or trailing front because it is miscible with the propane. A small band of propane should thus remain wedged between the gas and oil phases. This idea has been called the "miscible slug process."6 Unfortunately, the propane slug will become diluted as it flows through the reservoir. This results from a mixing action since the fluids flow through a complex reservoir porous medium rather than simple capillaries. Fig. 1 diagrams a miscible slug displacement. The effects of some of

The ratio of the endurance limit (10' cycles) to tensile strength of age-hardened aluminum alloys is approximately 0.3, whereas the ratio for annealed alloys is about 0.5. The lower value for the age-hardened alloys has been associated with the instability of coherent precipitate during cyclic loading, but it has not been definitely established whether this instability is due to overaging or reversion during cyclic loading. The results of the present investigatzon support the reversion viewpoint. In this work specimem of 2024-T4 aluminum alloy were aged for 16 hr at 150°C after cycling for 10 pct of the life at 25.000 psi. These specimens were then tested to failure and exhibzted a marked increase in fatigue life. It is proposed that during the early stages of fatigue in this alloy dislocations cut through the coherent precipitate and bring about the reversion of the precipitate. Subsequent aging at 150ºC induces reprecipitation in the precipitate-free zones so that the weakened regions are strengthened and the fatigue life is extended. It Is recognized that the fatigue strengths of precipitation hardened aluminum alloys are unusually low relative to their tensile strength.'-= This feature is illustrated in Fig. 1 where it can be seen that age-hardened alloys have lower fatigue ratios (the ratio of the fatigue strength to the tensile strength) than those in the annealed or cold worked state. Further, as shown in Fig. 2, the more an alloy is dependent upon precipitation hardening for its total strength, the lower is the ratio of the fatigue strength to the tensile strength. This state of affairs has been associated with an instability of the metastable metallurgical structure of precipitation hardened aluminum alloys during cyclic loading. Evidence2 in support of this view is that the fatigue ratio increases in these alloys as the test temperature is lowered, thereby indicating that thermo-mechanical instability, rather than some other factor such as a non-uniform distribution of precipitate, is the factor responsible for the low fatigue ratio at room temperature. Two mutually exclusive proposals have been ad- vanced to account for this instability. Hanstock has proposed that overaging takes place during cyclic loading, and in support of this view, Broom et a1.2 have indicated that an overaging process might be promoted by the large numbers of vacancies which are created during cyclic loading. The creation of vacancies by radiation4 has been shown to lead to rapid overaging. Hanstockl obtained visual evidence of overaging in an aluminum alloy after cyclic loading, but in this instance it has been pointed ou? that because of the high frequency used (60,000 cpm) the observed effect may have been due to normal high temperature precipitation around energy dissipating cracks. Efforts to discern visual evidence of overaging in this alloy at lower test frequencies were not successful.3 The alternative postulate3 is that reversion takes place during cyclic loading and leads to localized soft spots at which fatigue cracks are readily initiated. Evidence for this process has recently been provided by Polmear and Bainbridge5 who demonstrated metallographically that regions depleted of precipitate were created during cyclic loading of an aluminum alloy. Inasmuch as precipitate particles bordering the depleted region had not grown in size, it was concluded that the solute atoms which had constituted the missing particles had gone back into solution. No mechanism for the reversion process was presented. The present study was undertaken to investigate further the conditions leading to instability during cyclic loading, and to determine whether reversion or overaging had taken place as a result of cyclic loading. BACKGROUND AND TEST PROCEDURE In order to differentiate between the processes of reversion and overaging, rest periods at an elevated temperature, which ordinarily would insure additional precipitation, were used in this investigation. It was expected that after a period of cyclic loading an elevated temperature rest period would result in a decrease in the remaining life of the specimen if overaging were occurring during cyclic loading, whereas in the case of reversion, reprecipitation would occur and the fatigue life would be extended. Such an expectation is based on the assumption that the crack-nucleation phase is a significant portion of the total fatigue life, and that such a treatment is of influence in the crack-nucleation stage and is relatively unimportant thereafter.

THE most effective means of strengthening hot-rolled ferritic steels are grain refinement and precipitation hardening. It is well-known that grain refinement increases both the strength and the toughness. However, the upper limit of yield strength obtainable by grain refinement alone is about 60,000 psi,'12 i.e., without the formation of acicular structures of lower toughness. The most economical means of obtaining higher strengths is the addition of small amounts of elements such as columbium, vanadium, and titanium which form carbonitrides. These precipitates are very effective in increasing the strength, but the ductile-brittle transition temperature is is Although it is agreed upon that precipitation decreases the toughness, there has been little effort to isolate the causative aspects of embrittlement. The purposes of this research are to assess quantitatively the embrittlement associated with different precipitate distributions and morphologies, and to correlate the degree of the embrittlement with the microstruc-ture. In this manner, a more fundamental insight into the mechanism of embrittlement may be gained. The steel selected for this purpose was a low-carbon, columbium-bearing steel which, after solution treatment, was aged in various time-temperature cycles while attempting to hold all other microstructural variables constant. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE The composition of the steel used in this investigation is given in Table I. Starting with commercially hot-rolled material 0.074 and 0.280 in. thick, tensile blanks were cut from the thinner material and sub-size Charpy blanks from the thicker stock. The steel had been rolled using a low finishing temperature and rapid cooling after hot rolling to produce grain refinement. Also, chemical-extraction analysis and electron-microscopic examination revealed that the cooling was rapid enough to suppress any significant precipitation of CbC. Therefore, the as-rolled steel is essentially in the solution-treated condition in terms of the precipitation reaction, and it was used as the base material in this investigation. The room-temperature tensile properties of the as-rolled steel aged at 1100", 1150", and 1200°F for various time intervals were determined, see Table 11. The ductile-brittle transition behavior was studied for smooth and notched tensile specimens, and longitudinal half-size (0.200 in. thick) Charpy V notch specimens aged at 1100" and 1150°F for various times, also Table 11. In addition, tensile specimens aged for single times at 1050" and 1200°F were evaluated with respect to their ductile-brittle transition. Only one 1050°F treatment was used because of the extremely slow kinetics of precipitation at this temperature and because no significant difference between 1100°F aging was observed. Only one treatment at 1200°F was used because aging at this temperature alters the shape of the grain boundary cementite particles present in this steel and complicates analysis. The design of the tensile specimens is given in Fig.1.

A comprehensive survey is made of the status of the asbestos industry as it relates to marketing the product. Included are descriptions of the various types of asbestos and the grading and classification systems used. The uses of asbestos, distribution practices, and types of ore bodies are all related to marketing. World production, the producers and their capacities and world consumption for 1966-67 are summarized and statistical data are included. Asbestos is a general term describing a family of fibrous minerals of the serpentine and amphibole mineral groups. Asbestos has a long history going back to the time of the Egyptians, when it was used as a lamp wick. The commercial mining of asbestos started in Canada, Russia, and Africa in the 1800's, and the first asbestos products were made in Italy and Russia. The five main types of asbestos are: chrysotile, accounting for 95% of the total mined, amosite, crocido-lite, anthophyllite, and tremolite. Canada, Russia, and Africa are the major producers of asbestos. The commercial utility of asbestos was at first based on the heat resistance of the fibrous mineral in the form of packing, at the start of the industrial revolution. Its current utility is based more on its ability to reinforce binders such as portland cement, rubber, and plastics. Its inertness to the chemical nature of most binders is unique. Most important is its ability to maintain its reinforcing utility when the product is exposed to weather and soil conditions as in asbestos cement boards and pipe, and heat, pressure, and chemical exposure as in brake linings and gaskets and packings. The mineral asbestos is also unique because its fibrous form permits it to be spun and woven to cloth or formed into paper. Many asbestos applications are critical to national defense and at the present time, there are no satisfactory substitutes. Grading and Classification Canadian chrysotile asbestos fiber is graded and priced by length since basically the longer the fiber the higher the utility. The Canadian asbestos industry does not, however, classify the fiber by direct length measurement, but by a dry screening test. The method is called the Quebec Standard Screen (QS) test. One pound of fiber is mechanically shaken in four vertically stacked sieve boxes. The relative proportions remaining on the sieves defines the grade. The longer the fiber, the larger is the amount that stays on the top coarse screens and the less on the lower, finer mesh screens. Other tests can be used to further define the length distribution of fiber such as the wet screen Bauer McNett and the Suter Webb Comb (3 group only). The Canadian grading system divides the milled fibers into 5 main groups: group 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7, with 3 group being the longest, and 7 the shortest. Each group is further divided to subgrades, identified in each group by the letters A to Z, with "A" the longest and "Z" the shortest. See Appendix 1 for the Canadian QS classification system. The Russians also use the QS test on chrysotile. The Africans classify their chrysotile into grades similar to Canadian. The African crocidolite and amosite, however, are classified into actual length groups such as l to 2 in. and 2 to 3 in. Amosite and crocidolite are generally longer than chrysotile but also more brittle. Milled asbestos is not composed of staple length fibers like fiber glass or cotton, but of a mixture or blend of fibers ranging from long to short. Milled asbestos has a fiber length distribution similar to the particle size distribution of a powder. For example, the longest group 3 chrysotile grades have a high percentage of the longest fibers (1/2 to 3/4 in.) and low percentage of short fibers (0.003 in.). The figures in Table 1 give the approximate length distribution of the longest, middle, and shortest groups. A second and further method of classifying fiber is the degree to which the fiber bundles are separated to form a larger number of smaller diameter bundles. This property is normally described as the degree of fiberization, openness or surface area. Air permeability tests are used to measure surface area. Asbestos pro-

In recent years there has been an increasing effort to attract students into engineering. Obviously, the effort is necessary because young people find the image of the engineer unattractive. Some of the things they find unattractive are real, some are not, and part of the problem is too little knowledge of the field. First, I would like to comment on some of the ideas which appear to be justified. Engineering is a difficult course of study. True, and nothing can or should be done to change this. The education is continually being improved, but it is unlikely to be made easier.

In defending the chemical theory of flotation, Taggart, del Giudice and Ziehl have criticized1 the views of those who prefer to attribute the effects of certain flotation agents to adsorption. Perhaps with some justification, they describe the latter term as the "haven of refuge of writers lost in a morass of shaky experiment and muddy thinking." We prefer to regard it, however, as a haven of refuge for writers who seek a conventional term to describe the formation of films of flotation reagents on solid surfaces, because in many cases it is not yet possible to specify the forces that hold them there. Originally, as Taggart and his associates state, adsorption connoted a concentration difference and nothing more. In recent years, workers in the field of surface chemistry have tacitly added other meanings, and they now speak of orientated adsorption of unimolecular films on a solid sub-strate, of chemi-adsorption, and of exchange adsorption. Thus the term adsorption may connote simply the Gibbs layer of excess concentration at the surface of a solution, or a unimolecular film at the surface of a solid. Perhaps this has led to the misunderstanding of Taggart, del Giudice and Ziehl concerning the relationship between surface tension and adsorption at solid surfaces. The change in "surface tension" accompanying adsorption at a liquid surface can be used as a measure of the adsorption, and the Gibbs equation as quoted by these authors correlates these two conceptions. But, to correlate two conceptions docs not necessarily imply an attempt to explain either, although sometimes such an "explanation" is carelessly inferred. Use of "surface energy per unit area" instead of the numerically equal but more difficult and less definite conception of "surface tension per unit length " would lessen many of the present difficulties. (Compare with Adam.2) At interfaces involving a solid phase, neither '" surface tension " nor " interfacial tension "can have any meaning, but the conception "interfacial energy per unit area" call be understood by anyone who is familiar with the concept of free energy. While it is true that surface energy cannot be directly measured at a solid surface,
