WASTE of coal, or perhaps more properly the percentage of its recovery in mining, has keenly interested me during an experience of over a half century in coal mining. In the early part of that time and until a few ears after World War I the use of better mining plans and supervision resulted in an increased recovery. Since then, and particularly since controlled prices have been effective and mechanized mining has been extensively practiced, the tendency has all been toward lesser recovery in mining. The purpose of this paper is not to criticize the methods being used, which after all are the result of economic forces, nor to point to any particular mining method or to any locality where the best recovery is obtained. but to call attention to the tremendous waste of our national coal resources that is constantly continuing. A possible method of reducing this loss will be suggested. but without any illusions that it will be followed or that much attention will be paid to it.

I. INTRODUCTION. THESE impurities are perhaps the most important things in steel-especially steel made by the oxidation processes-the effect of which has not been at least approximately determined. By oxidation processes I mean the Bessemer and Siemens-Martin, during which the metalloids in the charge are removed by oxidation. It has been truly said that it is a clear advantage to have a new name for a new thing. To secure this and to economize space, let us adopt the name sonim (plural sonims) to designate the solid non-metallic impurities existing in steel or other metal. I would define a sonim as a solid non-metallic portion of matter existing as an impurity in metal. A piece of sand, brick, clay, or such material, imbedded in metal, would be considered as a foreign body, not as an impurity, and therefore not a sonim. The studies of sonims of which the results have been published hitherto, have been made chiefly or wholly on finished or at least on cold steel, without much, if any, regard to the specific methods by which the steel was made. While many of the results so obtained are valuable, they give little help in determining the cause, effect, or cure of the disease. It is not enough, in such a study, to know merely the commercial name of the process; for within the field of each process lies a great number of possible variations, each of which will yield a result differing in some respect from all others; and the control of sonims is particularly dependent. on the metallurgical treatment of the metal, because of the inability of analytical chemistry to throw much light on their presence, condition, and effect, as they usually occur in commercial steels. The microscope aids more, perhaps, than chemistry in their study.

A large-scale water-injection program for the Holt Bryant reservoir of the Delhi field has been established by means of the new automatic multi-pool analyzer. The objectives of this program were to increase reservoir pressure and eliminate a cross-dip gradient of 200 psi. Pressure increases during the first 15 months of operation have allowed for increased oil production rates of 2,600 BID or 25 per cent. To determine the required water injection it was necessary to predict natural water influx ram. Elimination of the pressure gradients required the water-injection program to account for the fluid migration and pressure interaction between segments of the reservoir. An integral part of the ana1ysis included the determination of in-place volumes of oil and gas. The operation of the automatic multi-pool analyzer in determining the water-injection program is described. New features of the analyzer inc1ude an automatic maferial balance analog and a leart-squares computer for determination of unknown reservoir properties. Operational procedures are sufficiently simple to allow direct use by reservoir engineers on a routine basis. The rapidity and accuracy with which problems may be solved permit repeated ana1yses as a check upon reservoir performance. INTRODUCTION This paper describes the use of a new analog com- puter in determining the optimum injection program for a complex reservoir. The Holt-Bryant (Fig. 1) is the major reservoir in the Delhi field of Louisiana. Production is from the Tuscaloosa at subsea depths of 2,970 to 3,286 ft. The sand dips to the south and southwest from three to five degrees. The reservoir is approximately 12 miles long and varies in width from 1/2 to 2 miles. Various calculations have placed the initial volume of oil in-place in the wide range of 275 to 355 million STB. Two small gas caps were initially present in the reservoir. The Holt-Bryant reservoir was discovered in Dec.. 1944, and was fully developed with 188 producing wells by 1948. AN investigation of the fracture plane of titanium, containing 0.5 wt pct to 1 wt pct 0, was recently carried out by fracturing large-grain specimens in a tensile jig at room and liquid air temperature. The experiments were carried out on strip specimens 3 to 5 mm wide, 2 mm thick and about 100 mm long. The specimens consisted of several grains, each occupying the entire cross section of the strip and extending over a length varying from 5 to 20 mm. These specimens were prepared by a method described elsewhere.' The identification of the fracture plane was possible in twelve of approximately thirty crystals investigated. In some cases severe local distortion took place near the fracture and prevented identification of the fracture plane. On, at least, three occasions the fracture propagated in a helicoidal

Classification of Experimental Work The experiments performed may be grouped for purposes of description under the following general headings: I. Collecting agents. a. Effect on slime dispersion. c. Effect on sulfides. Summary of the Origins of Present-day Flotation Practice The first practicable, foolproof method of froth flotation was described in U. S. Patent 835120, issued in 1906 to Sulman, Picard and Ballot, and in the equivalent patents in other countries. A number of less simple methods of producing the same result had been described previously in patent publications and otherwise.' The reagents specified in all of these early patents were "oils" and, in addition, some inorganic substance, usually an acid. The quantities of reagents recommended and added were enormous when compared with those used today.

PERU, lying south of Ecuador and having common frontiers with Brazil, Chile, and Bolivia, includes over a thousand miles of the Andean mountains. The coastal plain is arid and narrow and the Amazonian jungle region is of interest only on account of its oil and gold placer possibilities. The mountain zone, however, here forms one of the world's most highly mineralized regions. The Peruvian Andes, like their Bolivian and Ecuadorian counterparts, form two distinct chains separated by the great Apurimac and Maralion valleys; but these rivers cut through the Eastern range to join the Amazon drainage, and the central valley is missing north of the passes thus formed by these rivers; the localities where the ranges are joined are aptly called knots. In addition, in central Peru, there exists a third range lying to the east of the first two and separated from them by the Urubamba and Huallaga Rivers. The Eastern range, however, is of little importance to the miner for few metal deposits are to be found therein except for the gold mineralization in the South. In general, deposition of metals in the Peruvian Andes accompanied igneous intrusions which invaded the folded Paleozoic and Mesozoic rocks during the Tertiary; thus the ore bodies are all typical of shallow or moderate depths.

THE first attempts at direct utilization of blast-furnace gas in engines were made in 1895. For a considerable time the gas had been burnt in Cowper stoves for heating the blast for the furnace, and under the boilers which supplied steam to the blowing-engines, and others serving the furnaces. It was natural, therefore, that the idea of directly employing it in gas-engines should have occurred simultaneously to several engineers, notably to Lürmann and to Lencauchez, who had pointed out the blast-furnace as a powerful -gas-producer. Nevertheless, nowhere had any attempt been made to apply it to this purpose up to the end of 1894, when Thwaite proposed it to Mr. James Riley, of the Glasgow Iron & Steel Company. About the same time investigations were being made in Belgium and in Germany, independently of Thwaite's experiments, which were not generally known on the Continent. The industrial world, which up to that time had hardly favored the idea, had thus been gradually prepared to receive it. The gas-engine, long restricted to small sizes and dependent upon the use of an expensive fuel obtainable only in large centers, now began to make headway. At the Paris Exhibition of 1889 two engines of 100 h.p. were shown and excited much interest among engineers. One had four cylinders, and was made at the celebrated works of the Deutz Company, and the other was a single-cylinder engine, exhibited by two French designers, Messrs. The following article covers the history of a metallurgical campaign, commenced in March, 1905, at the mines of the Socorro Bold Co., in the so-called desert region of Yuma county, Arizona. The results obtained were simply a function of necessity, as will be seen from the description of the local economic conditions and the character of the ores treated. The mines and mill of the Socorro Gold Co. are located near the small village of Harrisburg, about 60 miles from Congress Junction, Ariz., which, at the time this work was undertaken, was the nearest railroad station, and from which all supplies were brought by wagon through the desert, at a cost varying from $10 to $15 per ton in addition to the railroad freights. Wood, the only available fuel, cost $7 per cord. Water for all purposes was pumped to the plant from a well in the valley about 4 miles away. Under the Arizona law, a working-shift is 8 hr. Wages were $6 per day for foremen and mill-men, $4 per day for blacksmiths and engineers, $3.50 per day for miners, and $3 per day for shovelers and trammers. The ore consisted of quartz, in which, above the 250-ft. level, the iron-minerale were largely oxidized and some free gold was visible; below that level few traces of oxidation occurred, and pyrite constituted the principal mineralizer in the quartz, together with occasional pockets of galena and a few eccentric specks of covellite. The 20-stamp mill was equipped with plates for amalgamation, and three Standard tables for concentration. The tails from the tables mere elevated by a centrifugal pump to a launder, by which they were conveyed to a 60-ton cyanide-mill for further treatment. The cyanide-mill was erected at so great a distance from the stamp-mill that a separate crew of workers and a separate power-plant were necessary. Although the amount of dust that will be actually recovered in the six main dust-control systems cannot be accurately stated until the tests mentioned previously are carried out, it is estimated that the average air entering the wet collectors will contain around 5 grains of dust particles per cubic foot. This means that the six systems handling a total of about 133,000 cu.ft. of air per minute will return about 68 1/2 tons of dust to the concentrator per day and since the copper in this dust will average around 2 per cent, the total recovery is approximately 1.37 tons of copper every 24 hours. This important copper recovery is not due entirely to the dust-control system since in a plant without control only the duct that is dispersed to the atmosphere represents a loss. A conservative estimate of the recovery of copper solely due to the dust control system would be about half of the total or approximately 0.70 tons of copper per day.

Nationalization of the coal mining industry in Great Britain was one of the first pieces of major legislation enacted by the post-war Labor Government in 1964. It followed a long period of economic depression with high unemployment and bad industrial relations in the coal mining industry during the 1930's, and shortages of coal during the last war. Upon nationalization, the National Coal Board took over control of the industry in 1947 and so became the biggest single employer of labor in the western world. As well as the coal mines themselves, it assumed responsibility for a great variety of other assets including coke ovens, byproduct plants, land, houses, railways and shipping wharves.

IN a previous communications the improvement in strength, harden-ability and color, occasioned by replacing gold in a typical gold-silver-copper alloy by various amounts of platinum, or palladium, was discussed. In the present paper the results of further studies upon the constitution and the nature of the hardening transformation in these alloys are pre-sented. This research may be summarized as follows: 1. The liquidus and solidus have been determined for the alloys of the palladium and platinum series. Cooling curves were utilized for deter-mining the liquidus of the palladium alloys but this method proved unsuitable for the platinum alloys so that a, novel quenching method was utilized for the latter. Both the liquidus and solidus of the palladium alloys increase steadily with the palladium content. The liquidus of the platinum alloys increases rapidly with the platinum content, while the solidus temperature increases with the platinum content up to about 14 atomic per cent platinum, but suffers no further increase with additional increments of platinum up to 20 atomic per cent at least, owing to a peritectic reaction. 2. Palladium, and even more effectively platinum, reduces the rate of grain growth. Owing to this fact and to the increase in the solidus temperature, "overheating" does little or no damage to alloys containing reasonable quantities of these elements. This is confirmed both by tensile tests and metallographic examination. 3. The excess phase present in one of the high-platinum-content alloys has been isolated and chemically analyzed and was found to consist almost wholly of platinum, gold, and copper, evidently derived from the compound AuCu, by the partial replacement of gold by platinum.

Michigan's production of 17,301,000 bbl. in 1945, which is in line with previous years, has been maintained by extensions to old fields like Deep River, Adams, Fork, and others. There were a number of new discoveries but, as in the past, these are not given very much importance because enough drilling has not been done to develop their potentialities; however, judging by the past, some of them will develop enough production so that 1946 -will probably be in line with other years. Activities in Michigan were confined to the Basin area of the lower Peninsula, which has been under development since 1925.

The absence of a convenient glossary- of terms connected with mining and metallurgy has long been felt by the general public. It is to meet this want, not to furnish a technical manual for experts, that the following glossary has been prepared. It originated in an attempt on my part to revise for publication the manuscript of a compilation prepared from the appendix of Yale's work on Mining Titles and one or two other sources, to serve as an appendix to a new work on mining law, about to be published by Mr. H. N. Copy, of Washington, D. C. This revision soon assumed, contrary to my original intention, the proportions of a reconstruction; and with the consent of Mr. Copp, and for the purpose of receiving from my fellow-members valuable aid, I presented my still incomplete work as a paper at the Lake Superior meeting of the Institute, inviting from any quarter suggestions of new terms or better definitions to be incorporated in the glossary before its final publication. This invitation was so widely and generously responded to, that I cannot undertake to make in this place individual acknowledgments to those members of the Institute, and professional colleagues outside of it, who have favored me with assistance and advice. An experimental technique has been developed for the measurement of the rate of electrotransport to a precision of 1 pct in the molten Bi-Sn system. Results are presented across the phase diagram from 30°C above the liquidus to 520°C. A phenomenological description is presented and the data on Bi-Sn are thereby converted to the effective charge, Analysis of the data indicates the true charge of the migrating tin species in bismuth to be +1.8 at 500°C. The data agree well with the recent work of Belashchmko. fieldintensity. The resistivity of the molten Bi-Sn system is also presented. WHEN an electric field is applied to a metal, a relatively large current is produced due to the ease with which electrons move within the metal. The electric field also produces a force on the ions which might cause them to migrate. Such a migration of metallic ions has been detected under certain conditions. This electromigration of the metallic ions will be referred to herein as electrotransport. The study of electrotransport in metallic systems has a rather long history dating back to the initial work of Gerardin1 in 1861. General reviews of electrotransport in liquid and solid metals have been published by Schwarz,2 Jost,3 Seith,4 and Heumann.5 In reviewing the literature it is apparent that the theoretical developments are not yet complete. The difficulty arises in describing the momentum transfer between the migrating ions and the electrons. In addition, there is a lack of good quantitative electrotransport data at high temperatures, especially in liquid metal systems. This work was undertaken to establish quantitative electrotransport data in a liquid metal system which might serve as a critical test of the theoretical developments. The Bi-Sn system was chosen for analysis, and the rate of electrotransport was determined as a function of temperature and composition. Van Stone mine area is situated at the head of Onion Creek on the northwest flank of Gillette Mountain, Stevens County, Washington. The di strict was found during World War I, but the mine did not come into production until 1952. Production to the end of 1965 was 2,242,960 tons of ore that yielded 10,700 tons of lead concentrates and 120,000 tons of zinc concentrates. The area is part of the Selkirk Mountains Zinc-Lead Belt, or Kootenay Arc, extending from near Revelstoke, British Columbia, to Colville, Washington. A thick but incomplete section of Paleozoic marine formations occurs in the Kootenay Arc and is overlain by marine and continental Mesozoic formations. Both are invaded by Late Mesozoic-Tertiary batholiths. The belt is characterized by open complex folding and extensive high-angle and local thrust faulting. Principal ore deposits occur in the highly deformed carbonate rocks of Cambrian age-the Maitlen (Laib) and Metaline formations. The Van Stone mine occurs along a steeply S-shaped fold lying between the Kaniksu Batholith on the west and the Rogers Mountain Fault, a northeast-trending fault on the west flank of the Gillette Mountain Anticline, to the southeast. The fold is cut by northeasttrending faults containing notoriously irregular lamprophyric, diabasic, and pebble dikes. The host rocks, lower Paleozoic dolomites, are decolorized, silicified, and silicated in the mine area. Jasperoid and tremolite are the common alteration minerals. Other gangue minerals are barite, pyrite, brucite, calcite, and, near the batholith, pyrrhotite. Ore minerals are galena, jamesonite, and sphalerite. Ore minerals occur in bunches and pods intergrown with tremolite and jasperoid. Zinc is roughly eight times more abundant than lead. The highest ore outcrops at 3870 feet elevation, and an undeterminable portion has been removed by glacial scour. The lowest drill hole penetration has reached 3220 feet elevation. Oxidation ranges up to several hundred feet in depth and may be most closely related to pre-glacial groundwater circulation. The area of the mine was completely over-ridden by Pleistocene continental glaciers, and the present erosion surface is nearly continuously blanketed by up to 150 feet of glacial outwash.

MINERAL production of the United States is valued at over five billion dollars a year at present and the industry employs close to a million workmen, yet such maps as are available that might indicate the geographical distribution of this industry show only the location of coal and oil fields and of other mineral deposits. No recent map is available that shows this distribution in a quantitative way. The purpose of the maps and graphs here presented is twofold: (1) to give the mining engineer a clear conception of the relative value and the pattern of distribution of minerals in the United States; (2) to test the so-called block-pile (or grouped pillar) system of statistical mapping, which makes this presentation possible. (I discussed this method of mapping in an article which appeared in Economic Geology in 1939, Vol. 15, p. 185-188.)

JUST four years ago, in March, 1930, Gilbert LaBine discovered the rich deposit of pitchblende and silver ore on the east shore of Great Bear Lake, 30 -miles south of the Arctic Circle, which brought a new mining district into being. His original discovery is now the property of Eldorado Gold Mines, Ltd., but other groups have been active. Vigorous prospecting has outlined a mineralized zone that extends at least 100 miles from north to south. In this area silver discoveries have been relatively common; pitchblende, as might be expected, has been harder to find, though a deposit has been located this spring nearly 100 miles south of Eldorado that may be of great importance.

Location, Topography, and Climate The Burro Mountains are located in the southwestern part of New Mexico, in Grant county. The group is made up of two distinct mountain masses, known as the Little Burros and the Big Burros, the former lying about 6 miles southwest of Silver City, and the latter about 9 miles farther in the same direction. They are separated by the valley of the Mangas River, a tributary of the Gila, and a stream only in name, except after a heavy downpour of rain. The Little Burros attain an elevation of 6,625 ft. above sea level, and the Big Burros 8,054 ft., with the surrounding country averaging about 6,000 ft. To the south of these mountains stretches the desert plain, while to the north are the more frequent elevations of the mountainous country.

A few years ago Marsal published a method of predicting oil recovery as a function of time for an edge-water-drive reservoir with several rows of wells.' The method is based solely on oil- and water-production data obtained during a short period for the first row of wells and the gross productions (past and future) of all wells. This paper presents a streamlined version of the original publication and experimental evidence showing the reliability of this version. For this purpose scaled experirnents were performed in a large model (750 X 500 X 23 cm, 24.4 ft X 16.2 ft X 8.9 in.) in which edge-water-drive reservoirs with three rows of production wells were simulated. From the results of the experiments it is concluded that the method gives a fairly accurate prediction of the future production behavior of the reservoir and enables us to select the most profitable production plan. Results obtained with the method were always slightly conservative. INTRODUCTION The calculation method developed by Marsal aims at forecasting future reservoir behavior.' It can be applied to floods in which a number of down-dip wells are rapidly going to water. Essentially it is a method for predicting the future behavior of the up-structure wells on the basis of the observed behavior of the down-structure wells. As such, the method is especially useful for predicting behavior of edge-water drives toward several rows of wells. The requirement to be met for justifying the approach is identity of production mechanism in all regions of the reservoir. The attraction of the method then lies in the fact that it applies even when we have no complete description of the prevailing production mechanism. The original publication was in the German language and for this reason, perhaps, did not attract widespread attention. In our opinion it deserves to do so because it does offer in a simple way results which are in fair agreement with observed data. The aim of the present paper is to bring the method to the attention of a wider audience. The method in its most simplified form is reviewed and experimental data in support of it are presented. PRINCIPLES To show Marsal's principle. we will first write the continuity equation for very simple conditions, linear flow (in the positive x-direction) in an incompressible porous body [cross-section A(x), porosity +(x)], saturated with incompressible fluids (oil saturation S). When the oil in this formation is displaced by water, injected at x = 0 (inlet face), we get where q(t) is the total gross displacement rate and f the fractional oil flow. The equation can be solved if we make the assumptions: (1 ) that the fractional oil flow (f) is a univalent function of saturation (S); and (2) that the function is the same throughout the porous medium. Then: f = f(S) Solving this equation with the method of characteristics, we obtain
