Otto Schaaber (Institut für Harterei-Technik, Bremen -Schönebeck, Germany)— Langenberg, Pestel, and Honeycutt gave an interesting example of the grain refining effect nonstationary magnetic fields may execute on a solidifying metal. Probably some additional comments, based on more than a decade of experience with this method of influencing crystallization, may be useful. They refer to an attempt to explain the mechanism of grain refinement by such fields, and to recent European developments which have not been mentioned in the paper. I. During studies of the temperature distribution in a metal body near the phase boundary solid/liquid, an anomaly was observed under certain special conditions: a) direction of heat transfer as horizontal as possible, b) steady state (equilibrium, i.e,, solidification resp. melting rate exactly zero). In the liquid phase, immediately adjacent to the phase boundary, the temperature was found to be constant over an appreciable distance in spite of a high value of heat transfer (40.000 to 70.000 keal/ m2h).3 Convection, which might explain this phenomenon, could not be observed. Therefore another explanation had to be sought. The assumption that a metallic melt, especially at temperatures near the point of solidification, contains some sort of atomic arrangement with a higher degree of order than the surrounding liquid, now is generally accepted. Considering the differences in energy between such an arrangement and its environs, a transport of heat even in absence of any temperature gradient is conceivable by continued formation and redissolution of regions with a higher degree of order, i.e., with lower energy level.3 At this stage, it was not necessary to postulate any special condition as to the form or size of these regions or the distance between arrangements to be newly formed and those to be redissolved. However, a simple consideration shows that an energy transfer from one region to another will only be possible without loss of energy, if the distance between will be equal to the lattice parameters, and if, secondly, crystallographic axis or planes will be parallel.4 By the way, this assumption might give a reasonable explanation of the well known orientation effect of the heat flow during solidification. Any measures to prevent columnar crystallization should act upon this ordering mechanism: a) the regions with a lower energy (higher order) should not be allowed to arrange themselves parallel to the direction of heat flow, and their growth should be disturbed; b) all conditions leading to an appreciable heat flow of uniform direction should be avoided or removed. Condition a) may be satisfied by a physical force preferably under 90 deg to the main axis of the columnar crystals (i.e., parallel to the solidification front) acting on the ordered regions; condition b) by equalizing any differences in

Following a procedure proposed by Wheeler and Ireland, Plane stress yield loci were constructed from Knoob hardness numbers. Basically, six differently oriented hardness measurements were made on three orthogml surfaces through pure poly crystalline magnesium sheet, a magnesium single crystal, and sheet of the magnesium alloys: Mg + 0.5 pct Th, Mg + 4 pct Li, AZ31B, and EKOO. Hardness loci were found to be in poor agreement at small strains (E < 0.05) with loci established by a more rigorous technique. At larger strains (E - 0.10) the agreement is fair, but at this stage in deformation the conventional locus has lost much of the asymmetry that characterizes these anisotropic materials. Two effects which will lead to distortions in the Khn locus are discussed with reference to the geometry of plastic flow during a hardness test. DETERMINING a material&apos;s resistance to multiaxial loading is of interest not only from a structural design viewpoint but also from that of deformation processing. Unfortunately, the determination of the yield locus, although simple in principle, involves tedious procedures if the results are to be at all rigorous.&apos; The idea, first proposed by Wheeler and 1reland2 of determining the yield locus by means of six Knoop hardness impressions along the principal directions in a material has obvious appeal. It is simple, quick, and should be applicable to very thin sheets. If such a technique could be demonstrated to produce consistently reliable results, it would be of interest to both researcher and designer. Lee, Jabara, and ackofen have compared the yield locus determined by Knoop hardness measurements (the Khn locus) to a locus determined by more rigorous techniques. They found good agreement for two titanium alloys at a plastic strain of about 1 pct. The purpose of this paper is to investigate if the Khn locus construction is a reasonable approximation to the locus of a highly anisotropic material. Examples of such materials are magnesium and magnesium alloys which have severely distorted yield loci which in turn reflect markedly dfferent yield strength in different directions.&apos; In pure magnesium, for example, the yield stress in tension along the transverse direction may be four times the yield stress in compression in the same direction and twice the tensile yield stress in the rolling direction. Predicting such large differences ought to serve as a severe test of the Khn locus construction. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Samples of rolled sheet, 0.250 in. (6.35 mm) thick, of pure magnesium and four magnesium alloys (Mg experimental materials. The pure magnesium together with the lithium and thorium alloys were those used in the study of Kelley and Hosford. The grain size was ASTM number 4 for the pure magnesium and number 6 for the alloys. HARDNESS TESTING The materials were sectioned along the rolling and transverse planes, mounted in a quick setting resin, and mechanically polished. Most of the hardness tests were performed on a surface prepared by electro-polishing (30 pct nitric acid in methanol at 0°C and 20 v) with the exception of the AZ31B and EK00 alloys which were made directly on a metallographically polished surface. However, subsequent hardness tests on the same sample after heavily electropolishing, revealed essentially the same hardness as before. At least twenty Knoop hardness impressions under a 100-g load were made in each of the six orientations shown in Fig. 1. The average hardness number and standard deviation were then calculated for each orientation. CONVENTIONAL LOCUS CONSTRUCTION Yield loci were constructed using a technique described in detail by Lee and ackofen,&apos; in which the flow stress (stress at a given plastic strain) fixes the coordinates of a point on the locus and measurements of the strain ratio serve to establish the slope of the locus at that point. The loading paths which correspond to uniaxial tension or compression tests establish the four intercepts of the locus with the coordinate axes plus one point on the balanced biaxial tension line Tensile testing was performed along the rolling and transverse (r, t) directions. Samples had a uniform rectangular gage length 1 by 4 by 4 in. (25.4 by 6.35 by 6.35 mm) and were deformed at a strain rate of 3.33 x 104 sec-&apos;. The tests were interrupted periodically to unload the sample and measure the plastic strains by means of X-Y post yield strain gages. Compression tests in the rolling, transverse, and through-thickness (r, f, z) directions were performed on 1/4 in. (6.35 mm) cubes at an initial strain rate of 8.33 x sec-&apos;. Lubrication was provided by 0.002 in. (51 pm) Teflon sheet which was renewed after unloading for micrometer measurements used to calculate the strains.

IF all of the 14 million tons of kaolin produced in Georgia through 1949 had been mined from a single deposit 20 ft thick, it would represent a mined-out area of less than 1 sq mile. This measure of depletion is in such strong contrast with the large size of the area shown in Fig. 1, from which most of the output has come, that there has developed an optimistic outlook concerning future supplies of kaolin equal in grade to that already mined. Dozens of mines are widely but not evenly distributed within this area, which consists mostly of parts of Twiggs, Wilkinson, and Washington counties. There are scarcely half a dozen kaolin mines elsewhere in the state that have been appreciably productive, although the areas in which they occur may have good possibilities. Most of the efforts to find new deposits, therefore, will be confined to the area shown in Fig. 1, for it is here that the industry has established its facilities, and prospecting is encouraged by relatively numerous outcrops and opened deposits of kaolin.

Consolidated Gold Fields Limited published annually an excellent reference, GOLD 1978, GOLD 1979, giving the Supply and Demand for Gold, Recent Developments and Prospects, Soviet Gold Production, etc. This outstanding reference is authored by Christopher Glynn, Investment Department, London, Great Britain. The 1978 Report marked the tenth anniversary of Gold Field&apos;s review of world gold market developments; and from it and the 1979 report, the following information was derived. The recovery of gold is widespread in the Soviet Union. Originally, gold was mined principally in the Urals, but in the last few years several major deposits have been discovered in the southwestern areas of the Soviet Union. One of the most dramatic discoveries has been the Muruntau deposit in Western Uzbekestan. This deposit, discovered in 1958, is reported to be the largest and among the lowest cost producers in the Soviet Union. It is located in Armenia, approximately 750 km (465 miles) northeast of the Iran-Afghanistan border, lying in the center of the Kyzylkurn (Red Sands) desert at the foot of Muruntau Mountain. Free gold occurs in both fine and coarse size in quartz veins up to 20 m (66 ft) thick associated with a small percentage of sulfides, mainly arsenopyrite. The ore zone constitutes a large gold-enriched stock work of about 4 sq krn (1.5 sq miles). The development of Muruntau was a major undertaking with open -pit development and construction of the mill and refinery complex started early in 1967, and the first gold bar poured in mid-1969. At the end of the first construction stage in 1970, the mill building was an imposing structure about 38 m (125 ft) high and 330 (1,080 ft) in length housing, probably, 11 parallel milling circuits. The first construction stage also included six 50 m (165 ft) diameter thickeners and 30 Pachuca tanks. The original mill complex was tripled in size after large additional gold reserves were discovered at a depth of 600 m (1,970 ft); and the deposit is now being exploited by both open- pit and underground workings. Ore is ground in semi-autogenous mills with the free gold being recovered into a high-grade concentrate on shaking tables. Table tailings are purnped to duplex spiral classifiers in closed circuit with the grinding mills. Classifier overflow is then thickened before being transferred to the Pachuca building where cyanidation takes place. An ion exchange resin is then added in a countercurrent

Minerals for electronic and optical uses divide easily into two sections: (1) quartz and (2) minerals other than quartz. Quartz Quartz, having a great usefulness discovered by the radio communication enthusiasts about 1918, has become a subject of amazingly expanded interest in the US over the past decade as a man-made mineral and a multimillion dollar crystal-growing business. An economic summary of the commercial growing of quartz crystals has a place in a handbook directed to the mineral engineering industry when it is remembered that quartz crystals have long been an important commercial mineral, and that the raw material for "cultured quartz"-that is to say, quartz crystals grown through the ingenuity of man-is still natural quartz. Nearly all the natural crystals come from Brazil. The larger pieces which meet rigorous standards of quality are used for electronic and, to a lesser extent, optical components. Smaller pieces and fragments are used for vitreous silica. The need for high quality material in quantity led to US government-sponsored research programs in the 1940s that have resulted in the factory growing of beautiful crystals of prescribed shape, size, and quality. The development of the cultured quartz crystal is typical of man&apos;s success in adapting the product of the mine to increasingly sophisticated uses. A remarkable achievement perhaps, but foreshadowed by experiments in 1908 by Giorgio Spezia (1908), an Italian geologist studying the relative effects of temperature and alkaline environment on the solubility of quartz. Modern radio equipment is most often controlled as to frequency by the presence in the circuit of a separately added "crystal"-the 1918 discovery responsible for the existence and growth of the quartz industry. The "crystal" is quartz, but this component is a carefully oriented and prepared slice from a crystal, but not a crystal as recognized by a rock hound or seen in a museum. How quartz operates to control frequencies is not a proper subject for a handbook on industrial minerals, and references should be consulted (Cady, 1964; Mason, 1964). Quartz belongs to that class of materials called dielectrics: those that do not conduct an electric current but permit electric fields to exist and act across them. Quartz shows the "piezoelectric effect," which means that when a quartz plate is mechanically deformed against its natural stiffness, one of its surfaces becomes negatively charged, the other, positively charged. When the plate is released from the stress quickly, the charges disappear as the plate regains its original shape, but because of mechanical momentum the plate deforms in the opposite direction (to a lesser amount) and the surfaces correspondingly become charged in the opposite direction. By coating the two surfaces thinly with metal and attaching flexible wires, these charges may be brought into an electronic circuit. If the surfaces are suddenly electrically charged by movement of current through the wires, the "converse piezoelectric effect" occurs -the plate deforms. Carry the thought further and it is realized that an alternating current flowing through the wires responds to the mechanical oscillation of the plate and is keyed to this oscillation. By controlling the thickness of the plate its mechanical vibration frequency can be varied through a wide range. One type of quartz plate, called the AT-cut, having a precisely defined orientation with respect to the crystallographic axes of the crystal, vibrates on a microscopic scale much as a book would deform when placed flat on a table and the top cover moved parallel back and forth with the hand. ALUMINUM-KILLED, low carbon steel sheets are used extensively for severe deep drawing and other difficult forming operations. They usually, but not always, have a characteristic grain structure in which the grains are elongated both in the lengthwise and in the transverse direction. As described by Burns and McCabe,&apos; a typical grain in the plane of the sheet has its two axes in that plane from 1 Y2 to 4 times as long as the axis normal to the plane of the sheet. Rickett, Kalin, and MacKenzieZ have also reported on the recrystallization behavior of such steel. The contrast in grain structures of fully processed sheets of aluminum-killed and rimmed steel is illustrated by Figs. 1 and 2. The elongated grain structure of the aluminum-killed sheet is not developed on all heats or lots of this metal, and studies of the factors controlling and influencing its formation are reported in this paper. Jeffries and Archerb tate that unstrained grains are normally equiaxed, but exceptions are common. For example, if a metal containing a material mechanically obstructing grain growth is subjected to considerable working followed by thorough annealing, it may exhibit grains consistently elongated in the direction of working. Our experiments demonstrate that aluminum-killed, low carbon steel is such a metal, and that the substance mechanically obstructing grain growth is aluminum nitride. The effectiveness of aluminum nitride in inhibiting grain growth has been found to be influenced by the degree of cold reduction, the rate of heating in annealing, the thermal history of the sample before cold reduction, and the residual aluminum content. A correlation between grain shape and austenitic grain coarsening temperature also was indicated and additional experiments demonstrated that aluminum nitride is also the principal cause for the fine grain characteristic of aluminum-killed steels. Manufacture In conventional practice, aluminum-killed sheet steel is manufactured from a low carbon steel containing approximately 0.02 to 0.07 pct residual (HC1 soluble) Al. With the exception of certain samples containing greater or lesser amounts of aluminum, the steels used in these investigations were within the following composition range: C, 0.03 to 0.06 pct; Mn, 0.28 to 0.38; S, 0.017 to 0.032; Al, 0.03 to 0.06; P, <0.01; and Si, <0.01. Properly heated ingots are rolled to slabs about 4 in. thick. After surface conditioning, the slabs are reheated to about 2300°F and hot rolled continuouslv to strip about 1/10 in. thick. The strip rolling is completed at a temperature of 1550°F or higher, and the strip is coiled, usually at a temperature near the lower critical transformation. After cooling, the strip is pickled to remove oxide, cold reduced 40 to 70 pet to final thickness, then annealed to 1250° to 1350°F in 20 to 80 ton charges, the size of which results in slow heating and cooling rates. Effect of Cold Reduction According to Sachs and Van Horn,&apos; the deformations of the individual grains in rolling are similar to those of the total volume. Thus individual grains would elongate in rolling according to the amount of cold reduction imposed. This is true theoretically, but as cold reduction increases the individual grains tend to fragment, and measured grain elongations become less than theoretical. The amount of grain elongation may be described by a numerical rating based on grain counts made by the intercept method. Specimens are polished normal to the plane of the sheet, with the polished surface extending parallel to the rolling direction. After etching, grain intercepts are counted along a 50 mm line on a micrograph of suitable magnification. In random locations parallel to the plane of the sample 20 counts are made and 20 are made in the thickness direction of the sample the average count in the thickness direction divided by the average count parallel to the plane of the sample gives a numerical rating of the grain shape called grain elongation. For example, a grain elongation of 2.00 means that the average grain is twice as long as it is thick. The average of both counts may be converted to grains per sq mm by a nomograph relating intercept counts and grain count. By the same procedure the grain elongation in the plane of the sheet but transverse to the rolling direction may be determined, using transverse metallographic samples. What is the cummulative rate of recovery of copper from a sulfide leach dump? The technical answers to this frequently asked question may vary from "I don&apos;t know" to "quite good" from people of the same company. Management also poses this question because it plays a vital role in planning future production. The answer is difficult because of the many variables between different operations such as physical construction of the dump, topography of the original site, characteristics of dump material, mineralization and water application. Each of these factors and others have a bearing on the rate of recovery. Anaconda&apos;s method of water distribution at Butte is unique in that each dump is drilled to allow physical injection of water into the dump. The injection holes are drilled vertically on 25 ft centers from the surface of the dump. Normally, the holes are drilled 40 ft deep and cased with 4-in. PVC perforated pipe. The pipe is perforated at one-foot intervals with four 1/2 in. diam holes at 90" spacing on the pipe circumference.
