PRODUCTS made from the ores of the sillimanite group, and synthetic substitutes for them, have unique properties, and service tests prove that they are playing, and will continue to play, a major part in improvements in metallurgical processes. Also, they are examples of how comparatively useless, rare, or "museum" minerals have been made available in commercial quantities. Until research developed uses for them, the minerals had been observed only in small, scattered masses, or crystals. Improvements in ceramic processes and compositions have come about very gradually. In the last 10 or 15 years, several outstanding developments have been made. Of greatest interest to the mining and metallurgical engineers are those affecting the composition, necessitating the mining of new minerals, and improvements in ceramic products used in metallurgical processes.

Attempting to analyze a 25-year forecast after less than a third of the time has elapsed may seem premature. The President's Materials Policy Com- mission's report necessarily painted with a broad brush and made no claim for pinpoint accuracy in its predictions. More importantly for present purposes, it made no attempt to predict the detailed courses of production and consumption during the period forecasted. Several statistical highs and lows may very well lie between now and 1957, so comparing recent figures with points taken from the report on a straight-line basis would be illogical. Moreover, the report assumed that the general trend of consumption-domestic and foreign-would be upward. Contrarily, domestic figures were lower in 1957 than in 1950. Therefore, to project curves from 1950 through 1957 leads to conclusions that are probably false. Many in the industry would feel more uncertain about forecasting 1975 domestic conditions now than they would have been in 1950, even though nearly a third of the 25 years has elapsed. In making comparisons, several statistical problems are encountered. The Paley report figures for 1950 were estimated in several cases and corrected figures vary as much as 10 pct. For example, the report placed 1950 lead consumption at 800,000 tons, whereas actual consumption was 885,000 tons. Obviously, in comparing more recent figures with the report's projections, adjustments must be made for positions taken in error from the start. Over the long pull, such discrepancies will probably be insignificant, but they must be noted in comparing short-term changes.

While coal was undoubtedly seen by the Spanish explorers in Texas, no mention can be found of it in any of their available published records; it was likely noticed by the first Americans, and coal along the Rio Grande River was reported in 1834.1 The next record is that of brown coal in Bastrop County in 1837 by James Nicholson and Judge Pinckney Hill? Dr. Riddell saw brown coal along the Trinity River in 1839 and described it as follows: "In the banks of the Trinity, associated with the iron ore, and overlying the brown coal, whole trees and fragments of trees, piled sometimes one upon another, present themselves completely transformed into stone. In some logs a diversified metamorphosis is observable; one portion of the vegetable structure having been replaced with silex, another with brown oxide of iron, and a third is bitumenized or converted into coal. "In concern with Dr. F. B. Page, I took considerable pains in the exploration of the Trinity brown coal formation., As no excavations for working have yet been made, the best places for inspecting the formation are where the Trinity cuts its way through the highlands, or where its banks present themselves in bold high bluffs, as at New Cincinnati, and near the site of the projected town of Osceola. The coal lies in horizontal strata, dipping one foot in thirty to the northwest. The main stratum at the latter place, just above Bedias creek; is represented by the concurrent statement of W. C. Brookfield, surveyor, Mr. James S. Hunter, of Huntsville, Texas, Dr. Page, and some other persons whom I consulted, as between six and seven feet in thickness, the lower portion being between three and four feet above low water mark. Unfortunately, during my sojourn there, the river was unusually high and turbid for the season of year; I could not consequently verify the same by personal observation and measurements. The most considerable coal beds which I had opportunity fully to inspect, were in the Trinity bluffs, southwest side, at New Cincinnati, six miles lower down, and just below the mouth of Salt creek, near six miles above. The workable stratum of brown coal in each of these localities is about five feet thick, and situated some fifteen feet or so above low water mark. In quality it is said to be precisely similar to the coal in the seven feet bed."2 . Moore in 1840 mentioned coal in the vicinity of Great Salt Lake, through which the Brazos flows; lignite in Bastrop County; lignite in the banks of the Colorado River a few miles above Lagrange in Fayette County; a deposit of excellent coal in the bed of the Sabine River, 30 miles above the

The relative concentration of 1" at grain boundaries in controlled orientation bicrystals has been examined by autoradiographic techniques, and by activity measurements of grain boundary surfaces exposed by preferential ,melting. The autoradio-graphs indicate that thallium is concentrated at grain boundaries in as-grown bicrystals, but not in zcell-annealed bicrystals. They also indicate that the solute concentration and the distribution on as-grown bicrystal surfaces are markedly different than that of the bulk material. The boundary surface measurements are in agreement with the autovadiographic evidence. On the basis of these measurements, as-grown bicrystals containing approximately 100 ppm of Tl, solidified at rates between 5 and 30 cm per hr and with tilt boundaries greater than 10 deg, exhibited grain boundary segregation equivalent to roughly 10 atomic planes of pure solute. Higher solute concentrations (equivalent to 140 atomic planes of pure solute) were obtained in bicrystals solidified slowly (0.6 cm per hr); slightly higher values were obtained in specimens containing a large angle nantilt boundary. Annealing for various times over a range of temperatures eliminated grain boundary segregation within the experimental uncertainty of the results (equivalent to 1 atomic Plane of pure thallium at the boundary). The results for the as-grown bicrystals can be qualitatively accounted for by assuming the presence of a groove on the solid-1iq;id interface, at the grain boundary. SOLUTE segregation at grain boundaries may be considered in two parts, namely, nonequilibrium segregation associated with the solidification process, and equilibrium segregation in fully annealed materials.' There is much indirect evidence for nonequilibrium segregation, based on preferential etching at grain boundaries and the mechanical properties of as-cast alloys. In addition, some direct observations have been reported in which radioactive tracers were used as solute additions and segregation detected at the grain boundaries by autoradiographic techniques. However, there is little detailed quantitative data on solute concentrations related to grain boundaries, particularly for different freezing conditions and grain boundary configurations. Equilibrium segregation at grain boundaries has been considered both theoretically and experimentally. cean' has made an estimate of the maximum equilibrium solute concentration that might be expected at a grain boundary, based on the lattice distortions in the boundary region. He arrived at a concentration which was equivalent t a monatomic layer of pure solute. A similar value, based on thermodynamic arguments, was calculated by Cahn and Hilliard for the segregation of phosphorus in iron. Experimentally, much higher values of solute concentration at grain boundaries have been reported recently by both Inman and iler' for phosphorus in iron, and Ainslie et 1.' for sulfur in iron. They observed concentrations equivalent to as much as 20 to 100 atomic layers of pure solute at the grain boundaries. However, in both cases it was shown that the observed segregation was not due solely to equilibrium segregation at the grain boundary. In the former case, precipitation effectss due to trace impurities in the material were believed to account for the large amount of solute present at the grain boundary. In the latter case it was shown that a high density of dislocations in the boundary region could provide a large number of additional sites for solute atoms, other than at the grain boundary. Thomas and chalmera have reported on the equilibrium segregation of po210 in grain boundaries of Pb-5 pct Bi alloys. Using autoradiographic techniques, they observed a concentration of polonium along the boundary trace on the surface of annealed bicrystal specimens grown from the melt. The concentration only appeared after annealing, and varied with boundary angle, increasing as the boundary angle increased. Their conclusions have been questioned by Ward," who pointed out that the segregation they observed along the boundary trace was much too wide to be compatible with the usual concepts of the thickness of a grain boundary of several lattice spacings. Also, Maroun et al.,l1 with specimens similar to those of Thomas and Chalmers, found that segregation could only be detected on the specimen surface, suggesting that Thomas and Chalmers' results were associated with an oxidation effect of polonium, and not equilibrium segregation. Thomas and Chalmers replied12 that they did observed segregation at the grain boundary in the bulk material and suggested further experiments were necessary to resolve the difference. The purpose of the present investigation was to examine both nonequilibrium and equilibrium grain boundary segregation in melt grown bicrystal specimens as a function of boundary angle, growth rate, and solute concentration, and to de-

The authors have previously investigated the solid-state activated sintering of tungsten powder with various Ni-Cu additions.' Log shrinkage vs log time plots showed changes in slope from 4 to x at intermediate times during the sintering process. This was attributed to a change in the rate-controlling mass-transport process from solution of tungsten into the tungsten-alloy interface to diffusion of tungsten in this interface. It was postulated that the melting of the activating layer should not affect this transport process. However, the superposition of rearrangement due to the presence of a liquid phase complicates the data analysis. It is the purpose of this note to apply the analysis of Prill, Hayden, and rohy' to account for "rearrangement shrinkage'? in liquid-phase sintering of the W-Ni-Cu system. This results in "solution-precipitation stage" shrinkage plots which were comparable to those obtained in solid-phase activated sintering of the same system. If one assumes total shrinkage to be the sum of rearrangement and solution precipitation, the effects can be isolated easily.2 This results in the general equation:

Banding that occurred in plates rolled from the early production heats of 18Ni(250) maraging steel is described and related to the segvegation of certain alloying elements (nickel, molybdenum, titanium), the extent of which was quantitatively evaluated by means of electron-microprobe analysis. The effect of banding on mechanical properties is discussed, with particular reference to observed directional differences in plane-strain fracture toughness of plates. It is shown that banding originates as interdendritic segvegation during ingot solidification and persists in some degree through normal soaking and hot reduction to plate. The results of the study showed that heating sections of small laboratory-cast ingots at 2200°F for 4 hr was sufficient to markedly reduce microsegregation and to considerably improve mechanical properties. Hot rolling of 7-in.-thick ingot sections to 1/2-in.-thick plate effected a similar reduction of microsegregation, but resulted in even greater increases in ductility and toughness than that obtained by homogenization treatment alone. DURING the past few years, considerable attention has been directed towards the low-carbon, high-alloy maraging steels and in particular towards the 18Ni-8Co-5Mo-0.4Ti alloy. The steels of this group, having an excellent combination of high strength and toughness, have a number of advantages over their more conventional medium-carbon low-alloy, quenched-and-tempered counterparts. In the annealed condition, the maraging steels are in the form of a ductile marten-site; aging at a relatively low temperature, typically 900°F for 3 hr, increases greatly the strength through the precipitation of intermetallic compounds. One problem in the early production heats of maraging steel was that the finished plate frequently displayed a banded structure. Previous work on other steels1-' had established that banding in wrought products is either a direct or an indirect consequence of chemical segregation, which occurs during solidification and persists to some extent through normal thermal and mechanical treatments. For example, Smith and others: in a study of low-alloy steel, were able to correlate the severity of banding in the wrought product with the degree of interdendritic segregation of nickel and chromium in the as-cast ingot. The effect of banding on the mechanical properties of steels is usually considered to be detrimental, although there is only limited evidence to suggest that a marked improvement in properties can be obtained with less heterogeneous structures. Comparison of the longitudinal and transverse tensile properties of banded and of homogenized 4340 steel showed that only the transverse ductility was improved by homogenization, but even then the improvement was not commercially significant.' Conversely, homogenization of through-the-thickness tension specimens of quenched-and-tempered steel plate, containing 1.47 pct Mn, increased the strength by as much as 10 pct and the tensile ductility by at least a factor of twos5 This improvement was related to the elimination of manganese-rich bands, which also are one of the factors responsible for cold cracking in the heat-affected zone of metal-arc welds.7 In the present study the nature and severity of banding in early commercial 18Ni(250) maraging steel plate and in laboratory-melted 18Ni(250) maraging steel plate was determined. The effects of banding on plane-strain fracture toughness and the effects of thermal homogenization treatments on the strength, tensile ductility, and toughness of 18Ni(250) maraging-steel as-cast ingots and rolled plate were evaluated. In addition, the effects of hot deformation by rolling on the mechanical properties of ingots were determined. 1) STUDIES OF BANDING IN EARLY PRODUCTION PLATE The chemical composition of the steel (A) used in this part of the investigation is shown in Table I. Banding was not clearly evident in either as-rolled or annealed* plate, but annealed and agedc** plate had a banded structure. The typical banded condition, Fig. 1, consists of layers of unetched austenite (white) and dark-etching martensite in a light-etching martensitic matrix. X-ray diffraction measurements showed that this steel contained more than 6 pct austenite. An electron-probe X-ray microanalyzer (using a focused beam of electrons) was used to determine the composition of the bands and of the material between the bands with respect to the main alloying elements— nickel, molybdenum, titanium, and cobalt. The recorded X-ray intensities were converted to concentration values with the use of a standard of similar composition. To facilitate probe positioning, all analyses were conducted on specimens that had been given a light etch. The influence of this etching on the analytical results was negligible; analyses made on the identical area before and after etching yielded essentially the same concentration values. The results of the electron-microprobe analyses at selected points revealed that the layers of austenite and adjacent dark-etching martensite contained greater amounts of nickel, molybdenum, and titanium than did the surrounding matrix, Table 11. Geologic studies during development at Copper Flat were directed at acquiring the necessary information in evaluating a low-grade porphyry copper deposit. In addition to the geologic mapping and core-logging of a typical exploration project, these studies included: - careful checks on the sampling and assaying, - selection of representative samples used to establish the recoverable amounts of precious metals in the ore, - examination of underground workings driven to provide samples both for metallurgical testing and for assay comparison, - evaluation of plant site and waste dump areas as non-material, including a placer examination of the tailings disposal area, and location of an adequate water supply. All these investigation were carefully documented to provide the necessary data both for the engineering design and, more importantly, for the feasibility studies required for successfully financing the project.

James Smolik (Kennecott Copper Corp., Salt Lake City, Utah) - Professors Peck and Wads-worth have made an interesting contribution to the study of fluoride activation of beryl. We have a few comments to make regarding the paper and a question to ask of the authors. We note that glass containers were used in the study. Hydrofluoric acid should react with glass to produce SiFg2 in quantity which could adsorb onto the beryl surface (onto either beryllium or aluminum sites). The authors propose that individual F- ions actually go into the mineral surface lattice rather than onto the surface by adsorption of siFi2 ions. Based on infrared reverse bands with an untreated

During 1975, the Reclasource Corp. constructed and started up a plant for the recovery of mill scale, coke breeze, blast furnace dust; blast furnace sludge; and TOC dust, at the site of Crucible Steel, Inc., Midland, Pa. The Reclaform Process was employed as the criteria for plant design. This process takes the solid wastes (as listed above) which are commonly found in integrated steel mills, sizes them, forms them through the use of a carbonaceous binder briquetting system, and fixes the binder through a final heat treating step. Blast furnace tests have been performed on 15,000 tons of Reclaform briquets. This paper gives a brief history of the program, and describes the process and the raw materials involved. The blast furnace campaign and its major conclusions are discussed.

The purposes, types, preparation, and testing of flocculants are discussed. A flocculation compendium is included, indicating choice of flocculant for a given set of conditions. An economic evaluation of the process is presented. Solid-liquid separation is a major expense in most mineral processing flowsheets today. Proper use of flocculation can often lower the overall cost of a solid-liquid separation by reducing the size of sedimentation or filtration equipment. PURPOSE OF FLOCCULATION When is use of a flocculant justified in terms of overall process economy? 1) when it results in process improvement, such as producing a clear liquor for electrolysis, precipitation, ion exchange, or solvent extraction; 2) when it results in satisfying requirements of pollution abatement ordinances; 3) when it results in increased recovery of values that would otherwise be lost; or 4) when it results in considerable savings in capital expenditure due to use of smaller equipment. When can the use of a flocculant adversely effect overall process economy? 1) when it results in increased filter cake moisture, 2) when it results in decreased filtration rates, 3) when it results in considerable bulking of sedimentation underflow, 4) when it contaminates either the supernatant or sludge, or 5) when the cost of using the flocculant is greater than the savings due to its use. First step in consideration of flocculants for a given application is establishment of desired goals in terms of increased clarity of effluent, increased recovery of solids, or decreased size of equipment. The most economical solution to a solid-liquid separation problem is that combination of equipment and flocculant costs which meets the established goals at the lowest total annual expenditure. This economic decision can be made only after technical data has been obtained as outlined in next four sections. TYPES OF FLOCCULATION Flocculation is a process wherein individual particles are united into more or less tightly bound agglomerates or flocs, thereby increasing effective particle size of solids suspended in a liquid. Degree of flocculation of a suspension of finely divided solids in a liquid is controlled by a combination of probability of collision between particles and probability of adhesion after the collision has occurred.' Probability of collision can be increased commercially through use of a paddle-type flocculator, combination flocculator, and clarifier or flocculating-type feedwell. Probability of adhesion usually can be increased by addition of a reagent known as a flocculant. Reagents act as flocculants through one or a combination of three possible mechanisms. The first is electrolytic neutralization of inter molecular repulsive force due to Zeta potential. This neutralization enables Van der Waal's cohesive force to hold the particles together after they collide.' The second is the precipitation, within a definite pH range, of voluminous metallic hydroxide flocs which entrap fine particles. This process is known as coagulation.14 Third is the bridging of two or more particles by either natural or synthetic long-chain, high-molecular-weight organic polymers. This bridging is accomplished by adsorption of two particles at different sites on the same molecule or by bonding of two molecules, each adsorbed to a different particle. Considerable effort has been expended in explaining the action of these polyelec-trolytes and detailed accounts are available in the literature. CHOICE OF FLOCCULANTS It is impossible, at the present time, to specify the optimum type or amount of flocculant for a given application from a knowledge of the material to be treated. The standard procedure is to choose reagents or combination of reagents most likely to be effective on the slurry; then test them.' The accompanying Flocculation Compendium (Table I) contains details of all currently available reagents sold as flocculants and it should be used when selecting the group of reagents for tests. For over 200 years meerschaum has been a significant item of trade between the Near East and countries to the west. Best-known for its use in making smoking pipes and cigar and cigarette holders, it is also used in making a variety of decorative and ornamental items. It is easily carved, and is given an attractive, lustrous finish by rubbing. No published specifications are known, but compact form, purity, uniform whiteness or light color, and uniform, porous texture appear to be requisites. Fig. I a shows the appearance of a piece of crude meerschaum from Turkey; Fig. lb a carved item; and Fig. lc, d, and e show the fibrous and porous texture as revealed by the scanning electron microscope. Neither a major industrial mineral nor a precious stone, meerschaum nevertheless holds a record of long-and continuing-association with art and personal affairs of man. It is also a mineral to which modem methods of exploration and production probably could be profitably applied. An interesting account of the preparation and use of meerschaum in the early part of this century is given by Sterrett (1907). Geology and Mining Mineralogy Meerschaum is recognized now to be the compact variety of sepiolite, the claylike variety of which is one of the minerals included in the chapter on clays. The word meerschaum, from the German meaning "sea foam," was in earlier times used synonymously with sepiolite, a word of Greek origin suggestive of the resemblance of the compact variety-then the only variety known-to cuttlefish bone. At one time meerschaum was used as the commercial name, and sepiolite for the scientific name. However, to think of meerschaum as the name by which sepiolite is known commercially is no longer valid, in view of the recent emergence of the earthy variety as a competitor of bentonite and other clay materials. Present tendency is to restrict the term meerschaum to the compact variety, and to use the term sepiolite as a more general name to include both the compact and earthy varieties. This is the terminology followed in this publication. Meerschaum typically is white to light gray, has a hardness of 2 to 2 ½ , conchoidal to irregular fracture, and specific gravity varying with porosity from about 2 to less than 1. The composition is somewhat variable,- but is near that determined by Schaller (1936) for sepiolite as 2MgO.3SiO2.4H2O. A more modern for mula based on X-ray determination of the crystal structure is given by Caillére and Henin (1961) as (Site) (Mg9)030(OH)6(0H2)46H20. The reason for the firm, compact nature of meerschaum, in contrast with the earthy variety of sepiolite, is not fully understood. It may be due to the presence of a very minor amount of some bonding material such as silica. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) photographs of a specimen from Turkey (Figs. lc-le) indicate that the meerschaum is composed predominantly, if not entirely, of crystalline fibers which merge into sheetlike forms in a complex, intertwined mass. Detailed X-ray and crystal structure data, as well as some data on thermal stability range, are given by Caillère and Hénin (1961) for the sepiolite family of minerals. Mode of Occurrence and Origin Most authors have attributed the origin of meerschaum to alteration of serpentine or other magnesian minerals. The occurrence in alluvium and other surficial deposits does not necessarily indicate that the alteration was supergene. In fact, hydrothermal origin appears more likely for some deposits, though not for all.

Alaska requires an adequate fuel supply for its development, and has large potential coal reserves ranging from lignite to subbituminous and anthracite. Coal production in the Territory now is less than the requirements. In L947, production was 361,000 tons, divided about equally between bituminous coal from the Matanuska field and subbituminous coal from the Nenana field. There is need for development of modern mechanized mines, which should produce the required output with a minimum of workers. These mines should not be thought of in the light of large potential capacity, as in the States. However, these new mines should be developed by modern methods, which should result in lower costs than at Present. Because of the diverse physical conditions in the coal fields, intensive investigation by diamond drilling is necessary to properly plan the development and equipment of mine sites at minimum cost. The Bureau of Mines is doing this now in the Wishbone Hill area of the Matanuska field. All coal land in Alaska is government-owned and subject to the Coal Leasing Act. Coal mining in Alaska has been handicapped by an inadequate supply of dependable workers. Wage scales have been very high in recent years, and "floaters" have been attracted to the coal mines. This type of labor is not conducive to efficient operation. Modernization of mines will require skilled and dependable workers and to induce such men to become interested in coal mining in Alaska, modern facilities, such as modern houses, schools, churches, and recreation halls, must be provided near the mines. Alaska is still a frontier and improvements in living standards must accompany development of mines in order that a stable community may be established. Coal is known to have been mined in Alaska at Port Graham, on Cook Inlet, by the Russians in 1854. During the Klondike gold rush in 1898, coal was mined in scattered areas for use on steamers plying the Yukon River and its navigable tributaries. After the Alaska Railroad was built, two important fields were developed—the Nenana and the Matanuska (Fig 1). The Bering River field was explored by the Guggenheim interests at one time, and a railroad to the area was constructed. However, the field was abandoned because of litigation and reported unsatisfactory physical condition of the beds. There are areas that today are unimportant but which may be developed in the future. Possibly the most important of these is the deposits of subbituminous coal adjacent to Cook Inlet, near Homer, on the Kenai Peninsula (see Fig 1). It is expected that the demand for coal in the Kenai Peninsula will increase because the population in that area has increased as a result of agricultural development. Numerous outcrops of coal are exposed on the peninsula and development of a mine there would obviate dependence on supplies of coal from the Matanuska field. Coal from this field must be shipped approximately 160 miles by rail to Seward and transported thence by boat about 180 miles to Homer. There has been no regular boat service from Anchorage to Homer. There are deposits of coal in the Arctic region but a description of them will not be given in this paper, which will describe the more important deposits in the Alaska Railroad belt. The results of a reconnaissance in the Arctic have been described.' Description of Fields MATANUSKA FIELD The Matanuska field lies in the valleys of the Matanuska River and its tributaries and their separating ridges. This field has been interpreted by geologists as a sunken fault block that separated the Talkeetna Range of mountains from the Chugach Range. The Matanuska River flows west along the south side of the field and the Glenn highway, which extends from Anchorage via Palmer to the Richardson highway near Glen Allan, follows the Matanuska Valley. IN CIRCLES where mining men are wont to fraternize, a statement often heard is: "Yes, I spent six (or two, or ten, or thirty) years down at 'Chuqui.' " This means Chuquicamata, the site in Chile of what in all probability is the world's largest deposit of copper ore. One hears similar remarks regarding Braden and Andes, and, in fact, regarding a score of other big mines in South America, Africa, and elsewhere, but Chuqui seems to lead the others as the locale of engineers who have done a stint in foreign countries. One reason probably is that it is the Anaconda Company's premier foreign operation. Because of its unusual size and the diversity of its operations a great many men are needed. It is a sort of training school for young engineers; but, also, Anaconda has sent down a great many mature members of its big organization for special assignments like metallurgical research or plant construction. Chuquicamata is about 150 miles northeast of Antofagasta, at an elevation of 9,500 ft. It is in an almost rainless desert country where the wind (it is alleged by some) blows most of the time. However, the copper mining entrepreneurs have done their best to make up for what nature has neglected to do in creating a pleasant environment for the people who operate the mines. These include about 160 "foreigners" of whom 86 are from the United States, most of them accompanied by their families. There are 165 Chileans on the staff. Comforts, conveniences, and many luxuries are provided to offset in some measure the disagreeable features of the climate. Nevertheless, as I have implied, engineers at Chuqui generally jump at the chance to become "alumni" when opportunity offers. At the same time, they appear to take pride in their alma mater.

The concept of a critical super saturation, below which the nucleation rate is essentially zero and above which it is essentially infinite, is discussed with reference to vapor-solid nucleation. The necessary and sufficient conditions deduced for observations of this type of behavior are: 1) the nucleation rate must exhibit a sharp dependence on super saturation, 2) the growth rate must be sufficiently large that nuclei become observable in the time period of the experiment, and 3) the number of highly preferred nucleation sites must be small. Experiments reveal that the nucleation of silver on sodium chloride is visually detectable at all experimentally accessible super saturations and does not exhibit critical nucleation behavior. Failure to observe a critical super saturation is attributed to the insensitivity of nucleation rate to supersaturation as a consequence of the particular values of the contact angle and the surface free energy for this system. THE concept of a critical supersaturation, below which the nucleation rate is essentially zero and above which it is essentially infinite, arises naturally in homogeneous nucleation theory. Experimentally this type of behavior has been found by Volmer1 and others for water and other low surface tension liquids, as reviewed by several authors.2'3 The same type of behavior has been predicted and observed for heterogeneous nucleation of solids by Yang et al.4 and others,596 as also recently reviewed.2,7,8 In the work reported here on the heterogeneous nucleation of silver on NaC1, however, no critical super-saturation was found. Similar observations have been made recently for other systems.9-11 These results led to a reexamination of nucleation theory which revealed that there are conditions for which critical behavior is not predicted, either for homogeneous or heterogeneous nucleation. Although heterogeneous nucleation is of primary importance in this paper, some insight into critical behavior for such a case can be gained by considering homogeneous nucleation. Accordingly both types of nucleation theory are reviewed briefly. The requisite conditions for critical supersaturation behavior are then considered. The experimental results for the nucleation of silver on NaCl are presented and interpreted in terms of the theoretical presentation. REVIEW OF NUCLEATION THEORY There are essentially two approaches to nucleation theory, the so-called classical theory involving the concepts of bulk thermodynamics, and the statistical mechanical theory in which nuclei are regarded as macromolecules. The classical theory is based on the work of Volmer and Weber12,13 and Becker and. Doring14 and has been extended by Pound et al.15 The crucial assumption in the classical theory is that the small clusters or nuclei can be characterized by the same thermodynamic properties as those of the stable bulk phase. Thus, the nuclei are assumed to have a surface free energy, y, and a volume free energy of formation (relative to the vapor phase), ,, identical to that of the bulk. For deposition under low super-saturation conditions, the nuclei are large and this assumption is satisfactory. However, in many cases of interest, the nuclei contain only a few atoms and this assumption is highly questionable. The statistical mechanical models originated, for the specific case of a dimer as the critical nucleus, with the work of Frenkel16 and were extended later to larger sizes by Walton,17,18 Hirth19 and, more recently, Ht Zinsmeister. These models describe the nucleus in terms of a partition function, the estimation of which is tractable for clusters of 2 to 10 atoms, but extremely difficult for clusters larger than 10 atoms. Although the classical and statistical mechanical models are expected to apply for the limiting cases of large and small nuclei, both are uncertain for intermediate sizes. In this paper we shall treat only the classical model, recognizing that it is exact only for large nucleus sizes and regarding it as a phenom-enological description for small nucleus sizes. When analyses of experimental data using bulk properties show the nucleus size to be small, the resulting parameters should be regarded as largely empirical parameters describing the relative nucleation potency of the system. Considerable justification for the continued use of classical theory is provided by its general success in predicting nucleation behavior as a function of supersaturation and temperature. We emphasize that the qualitative features of the statistical mechanical models, particularly the critical super-saturation behavior that is central to the present work, are the same as those of the classical model. Of course, potential energy terms and surface partition functions replace the volume and surface energy terms of the latter model. The most recent versions of classical nucleation theory have been extensively reviewed.2,3,7 so that only the results are presented here. The geological and economic conditions peculiar to the Greater Oficina area are presented to demonstrate the necessity of a low-cost, well-site method of distinguishing gas-bearing formations. The method of gas detection with the neutron log is briefly discussed and its limitations are explained. A new method is described which consists in running a second neutron log with a larger source-to-detector spacing. Field data indicate that under favorable conditions the larger spacing response is proportionately more influenced by the virgin gas zone than is the shorter spacing response. One important condition is that the gas sands be invaded, with a diameter of invasion equal to about two to three times the hole diameter. The calibration of the longer spacing log is made so that the two logs read the same deflection in shale and in a known water or oil sand. Under such conditions, gas is indicated by a positive separation, i.e., the curve for the longer device is displaced to the right of the curve for the shorter device. Because of the non-linearity of the long spacing response, low porosity formations also show positive separations. In sands with large porosity variations, the gas sands can no longer he located visually. They can be detected on a plot of shorter spacing vs longer spac-ing deflections. INTRODUCTION In the Greater Oficina area of Eastern Venezuela, the rapid and accurate detection of gas from well logs is of primary importance because of a combination of economic, geologic, and operational conditions. Briefly, these conditions are: economic—there is no market for gas at the present time; geologic—a single well may contain as many as 30 or more oil or gas sands for which intervals -to be tested must be selected; opera-tional—first, once opened to the casing through perforations, gas sands are extremely difficult and expensive to squeeze off, and second, gas detection must be rapid because the geologist must decide immediately, at the well, which sand to perforate. During the early period of exploitation in Greater Ofi-cina, when clay base muds were used, sidewall samples, together with electric logs, gave fairly good distinction between oil and gas sands. When exploitation became concentrated on deep fields of poorer sidewall sample recovery, and after the advent of oil emulsion muds, now the standard drilling fluid in Greater Oficina, the regular neutron log became the most reliable indicator of gas. In 1953, R. Norelius devised the dual-spacing neutron technique for gas detection. The dual-spacing neutron log has proved to be highly successful in detecting gas and has been adopted as a regular survey by all of the oil companies of the area. Several hundred dual-spacing neutron logs have been run in Eastern Venezuela and several tests per well are available for positive evaluation of the logs. The findings outlined below are based upon this extensive field experience. GEOLOGICAL CONDITIONS OF THE GREATER OFICINA AREA The Greater Oficina area lies on the south flank of the Eastern Venezuela Basin (Fig. 1). Nearly all accumulations of oil and gas in the area are trapped, in whole or in part, against normal faults. All known oil and gas reservoirs in Greater Oficina occur in the Ofi-cina formation (Miocene-Oligocene) or in the "U" sands. The U sands are the lithologic equivalent of the Merecure group (Otigocene-Eocene), which contains oil in many fields north of Greater Oficina. Most of the petroleum produced in Eastern Venezuela is from the Oficina formation.

THE nature of a collector-coated mineral surface has been the subject of some experimentation and much speculation. Various aspects of the problem have been isolated and studied; it is probable, however, that there exist aspects as yet unrecognized, which are needed for a complete description of the system. The recognized elements of the problem are: 1—The nature of the chemical units comprising the film and the nature of the forces holding these chemical units to the mineral surface; 2—The orientation of the chemical units at the surface; and 3—The disposition of the collector units at the mineral surface. This report touches upon all three aspects of the broad problem; it deals, however, with a new and heretofore unrecognized element—the mobility of the collector units in the two dimensions of the solid-liquid interface. Regardless of the viewpoint adopted as to whether the chemical units comprising the collector film are collector ions or molecules, held either by chemical or physical forces, the writers on flotation theory are in apparent agreement as to the orientation of the chemical units at the mineral surface. Wark and Cox' showed that the contact angle at a stable collector-coated surface in a constant chemical environment is independent of the nature of the mineral and of any resurfacing agent; it depends solely upon the collector used. They showed further that the value of the contact angle increases with the number of carbon atoms in a homologous series of compounds. Taggart, Taylor, and Knoll2 postulated that the collector ion is oriented with the chemically reactive, polar end toward the mineral surface and the non-polar, hydrocarbon-like end toward the liquid phase. In support thereof they cited the abstraction of p-p1 dihydroxydiphenylthiourea and of glycol xanthate8 by galena without a concomitant increase in the contact angle above that of clean galena. It was argued that in these cases the water-repellent layer which normally would be presented to the liquid phase owing to the orientation of the collector ions is overlain by a layer of water-avid groups, the hydroxyl groups. Implicit is the analogous orientation exhibited by a monomolecular layer of an insoluble substance at an air-water interface. It should be pointed out that these facts also are consistent with the concept that the collector units be flat on the surface of the mineral and that the response of the surface to an air bubble is determined by the ratio of the area covered by water-avid groups to the area covered by water-repellent groups; the areas being weighted according to the relative watef-avidity or water-repellency of the groups involved. The disposition of the chemical units of the collector film at the mineral surface has not received the attention it merits. Taggart4 concluded from the observed stoichiometry of the ions entering and leaving a surface that the stoichiometry is obeyed in detail at the surface of the mineral. Thus, in the case of xanthate-coated galena, pairs of xanthate ions are attached to surface lead ions. In the case of chemisorption, Gaudin and Preller postulated an agreement between the atoms or ions of the substratum (the mineral surface) with those of the superstratum (collector film); in the case of the physical adsorption their position is not clear. In one place they state "the first type (physical adsorption) does not require any agreement between the atoms or ions of the substratum with that of the superstratum" and in another place that "It seems, in fact, as though some slight influence of the substratum is formed even in physical adsorption." The present work shows that in some cases of chemisorption the chemical units of the collector film are in constant surface-bound motion and may not be assigned to any site of the surface, hence there is no permanent association between the chemical units of the film and the atoms or ions of the solid. The physical property of the collector film that is of paramount importance is its surface energy. Although this property is not susceptible to direct experimental determination, the related contact angle is. Much of the knowledge of the properties of a collector film derives (by deductive and inductive reasoning) from the behavior of an air bubble thereat
