We have studied the effect of adsorbed sulfur on the surface self-diffusion of copper using eight diflerent surface orientations and the grain boundary grooving method. The eight orientations studied were the four lying near the low-index surfaces—(loo), (Ill), and two directions in the (110)-plus four higher-index surfaces. Surface-diffusion measurements were made over a range of HZS concentrations (in Hz) from 3 to 1500 ppm between 830°and 1050°C. The results can be divided into two groups—Group 1 contains the two (110) surfaces while Group 2 contains the remaining six surfaces. In Group 1, increasing the temperature increases the effect of Hz S on DS for the Hz S range 5700 ppvn. Qs and Do increase with increasing H2S concentration in this Hz S range. Beyond this range, increasing the temperature decreases this effect on D,; also Q, and Do decrease. In Group 2, increasing the telnperature decreases the effect of H2 S on D, for the H2S range studied, and Qs and Do decrease with increasing Hz S concentration. In any study of surface phenomena, there invariably arises the question of the possible presence of and effect of adsorbed impurities. Such questions are well-founded since the presence of adsorbed atoms can sometimes produce marked changes in the kinetics of surface-energy-driven processes. In the last few years, values of the surface self-diffusion coefficient, D,, have been determined on a variety of metals by studying the decay of scratches or the growth of grain boundary grooves.L~3-L0~L3 Yet there has been relatively little work done in which the concentration of an adsorbed impurity was systematically varied and the effects observed. Work of this sort would provide some basis in fact for the assertions often made about the ro1.e of adsorbed impurities in the differences between the results of different workers in different atmospheres and on different metals. It also is relevant to those cases in which surface monolayers produce profound effects in commercially important processes. The most marked example of such effects is the ability of nickel or palladium to increase the sintering rate of tungsten by many orders of magnitude.' The aim of this work was to study the effect of sulfur partial pressures on the surface self-diffusion of copper. It was felt that this in conjunction with a study of the degree of adsorption and type of active sites involvedL8 would provide a wide range of data for one system and hopefully lead to some insight into the mechanism by which sulfur adsorption influences copper diffusion. The main reasons for choosing the Cu-S system were, first, faceting was reported not to accompany the adsorption of sulfur. This is required if our experimental technique is to work. Second, Oudar has determined a high temperature adsorption isotherm for this system, an event which puts the Cu-S system almost in a class by itself.I4 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Initially, we considered studying the effect of an adsorbed impurity on surface self-diffusion of copper using isolated (or single) scratch smoothing as the technique and oxygen as the impurity. Copper was chosen as the material because the effects of orientation and anisotropy of the surface self-diffusion coefficient, D,, of copper in a dry hydrogen atmosphere had been studied extensively by Gjostein' and by Shewmon and ~hoi.~,~ The isolated scratch technique was chosen because both the effects of surface orientation and anisotropy of D, in a given surface could be easily studied with this method.~ Oxygen was tried as the impurity because Robertson and Shewmon""~ had studied its adsorption on copper at 1000°C over the range of oxygen partial pressures of 10"22 to 10-l3 atm. After several preliminary runs, it became evident that neither the scratch technique nor the impurity oxygen would be satisfactory for this work. Scratching deforms an annealed surface so that the region near the scratches recrystallizes, thereby disrupting the scratch profiles. One can avoid this by deforming the specimen sufficiently before scratching to give complete recrystallization on subsequent heating.4 However, as a result of Gjostein's success in scratching and annealing undeformed gold single crystals without local recrystallization,13 we attempted something similar with copper single crystals using a 0.7-mil diamond phonograph needle mounted in a Tukon hardness tester. All specimens recrystallized upon being annealed. Also, some copper specimens were sent to Gjostein to be scratched using his technique. The results were the same. As a result, the scratch technique was dropped in favor of the grooving of symmetric grain boundaries. Preliminary work using oxygen showed that faceting began to occur before oxygen adsorption had any measurable effect on D, at 938°C (at Pbo/P, = 0.12). Since heavy faceting would interfere with the measurement, we decided to use a sulfur-containing atmosphere (H2S/H2). Work by Oudar and Benard' and Robertson" showed that sulfur absorbed on copper and that faceting was not observed.

LOW and Gensamer' demonstrated a number of years ago that the yield point phenomenon in mild steels was associated with the presence of fer-rite soluble carbon or nitrogen. More recently the yield phenomenon in body-centered-cubic metals containing interstitials was rationalized by Cottrell' in terms of a simple dislocation model. Interstitial atoms interact with dislocations in two ways; they cause not only local expansions but induce local tetragonality in the lattice. Consequently, interstitial~ interact with the hydrostatic tension and shear components of the stress about dislocations. They tend to migrate toward the expanded regions of edge dislocations and to assume sites that relieve the shear stresses of screw dislocations. Thus, a dislocation saturated with solute atoms constitutes a lower free energy state than that obtained when the dislocation threads through the average composition regions of the matrix. A greater stress will be required to separate the dislocation from its atmosphere than to move the dislocation through the matrix. This factor gives rise to the upper yield stress, which is required to unleash a series of dislocations in a localized region. This local yielding is propagated across the specimen to form a thin band of plastically deformed material known as a Lueder's band, making an angle of about 45" to the stress axis. Once the band has formed, deformation continues at the lower yield stress by the spreading of the Lueder's band in the direction of the applied stress. Undoubtedly the spreading of Lueder's bands at the lower yield stress is accomplished by the high stress concentrations at the band fronts, which serve to induce continued unlocking of new dislocations in advance of the migrating band fronts. Cottrell and Bilby have shown that the dependence of the yield point on temperature can be deduced by assuming that thermal fluctuations aid the stress in unlocking small dislocation loops from their solute atmospheres. Once a loop that exceeds a critical size has been nucleated, the entire locked diqlocation is released and can migrate. Fisher4 simplified this analysis by assuming that the locking forces were short range, so that if the dislocation loop were displaced only one Burgers vector from its atmosphere, it would be unlocked. Applying his model to the special case of delayed yielding under a constant stress of the order of the upper yield strength, he demonstrated that the delay time 7 for yielding should depend on stress and temperature according to where A and B are constants, G is the shear modulus, and u and T are the resolved shear stress and absolute temperature, respectively. Cottrell and Bilby, Fisher, and Fisher and Rogers' have shown that the above deductions are at least in qualitative harmony with the experimental facts. A number of investigators5-0 have shown that the yield point phenomenon can also be induced in sub-stitutional alloys of face-centered-cubic metals. In general such yield points are not as pronounced as those encountered in body-centered-cubic metals containing interstitials. The yield point phenomenon in these materials is usually enhanced by prestrain-ing at low temperatures and aging at intermediate temperatures. Undoubtedly the yield point phenomenon induced by strain aging substitutional alloys also results from locking of dislocations. But the locking of dislocations in substitutional alloys of face-centered-cubic metals differs somewhat from interstitial locking of dislocations in body-centered-cubic metals. Substitutional elements in face-centered-cubic lattices cause only radial displacements of the adjacent lattice points. Consequently, only the edge components of dislocations can be locked by the mechanism suggested by Cottrell. Additional locking, however, can be obtained by the Suzuki mcchanism.10 In face-centered-cubic metals, dislocations exhibit lower energies when they are present in the

BAUXITE is produced in Arkansas from two mining districts in the central portion of the State. These are (1) the Fourche Mountain district, immediately south and southeast of Little Rock in Pulaski County, and (2) the Bauxite (town) district, about five miles east of Becton in the eastern part of Saline County. These two mining districts are about twelve miles apart, separated by territory which, so far, has produced a negligible amount of commercial ore. Mining was by open-pit methods exclusively until 1924, when underground methods came into use. From 1924 to 1930 about 40 per cent of all of the ore produced in Arkansas was mined by underground methods, mainly by retreating caving.

Regional metallogenic zones and areas of equal paragenetic range have been interpreted from a compiled metallogenic map. of Mexico. Mineralization gradients of the pattern subsequently identified extend inland from coastal zones of high-temperature mineralization, and join in a central longitudinal zone of relatively low-temperature mineralization, apparently leaving no zonal room for lowest temperature deposits. The striking regional zoning pattern can be correlated with regional deformation gradients of similar position and orientation. The gradients represent at least three major orogenic cycles in two structural belts. Paleozoic structural belts existed along each coast with deformation gradients diminishing inland toward a narrow, central peninsular craton. The Mesozoic-Tertiary Mexican (Cordilleran) belt covered the entire country with a gradient oriented toward the Gulf of Mexico. Most ore deposits in this belt are of Tertiary age, although Tertiary mineralization gradients seem to have "inherited" the pattern left by Paleozoic tectonic gradients. Mineralization gradients can be used to identify the regions most favorable for the occurrence of selected metals. A metallogenic province is characterized by particular proportions of various metals, and the relative proportions can vary from province to province; but within any province the same intensity of mineralization would produce similar deposits in different places. Declining intensity of minetalization produces different kinds and sizes of deposits in zones that are concentrically arranged around sites of strongest rock alteration. On a regional basis, districts of similar average intensity of mineralization occur in zones that generally parallel some tectonic grain with the result that tectonic deformation has been designated a principal cause of mineralization. Variations in the type and intensity of deformation would determine the type as well as size of metal deposits. Mexico is especially favorable for such a study be- cause of its great abundance and variety of epi-genetic mineral deposits in various lithologic, structural and tectonic environments. The concept is also useful in recognizing portions of Mexico favorable for the occurrence of specific metals. METALLOTECTONIC ZONING IN MEXICO Theory: In studies of individual districts and groups of districts throughout North and South America, areal zoning of metal deposits generally seemed to respond to the paragenetic sequence of iron, gold, copper, zinc, lead, silver, antimony and arsenic, gold and fluorite. However, the definition of district zones is greatly obscured by contemporaneous or rhythmic deposition of metals, especially in the middle of the paragenetic range, and by the common superimposi-tions of different generations of metals. Zones could usually be distinguished only for groups of metals, such as early precious metals, base-metal sulfides, sulfosalts and late precious metals. The best defined zoning in a district is normally the spatial separation of the greatest volumes of altered and metallized rocks.' Exceptions are districts representing the high- and low-temperature extremes of the mineralization range where the former creates a matrix for the latter. In most districts the total quantity of alteration products is greatly in excess of, and appears to be roughly proportional to, the total quantity of metallization products. Subsequent to the bicomponent nature of each district, the most important mineralogical feature is the great excess of one to several metals or minerals which results in a district identifiable as one of predominantly gold, copper, lead-zinc, fluorite, etc., although a great variety of other elements may be present. The para-genetic range for the abundant elements in any district is only a portion of the entire possible range for all the elements representing the complete process throughout the region. Early during investigations of this type, it became apparent that the consistent bicomponent character of districts allows two methods for studying epi-genetic mineralization patterns. The following analysis was stimulated by a previous article on evaluation of the water problem at Eureka, Nev., which describes a method using formulas especially devised to calculate flow potential of extensive aquifers characterized by relatively even porosity and permeability throughout. The present discussion submits that the method was unsuitable for solving the kind of problem occurring at Eureka, where the amount of water available, rather than the flow potential, may have been the vital factor. IN an interesting article on evaluation of the water problem at Eureka, Nev.,1 W. T. Stuart describes how a difficult water problem, or one phase of it, may be evaluated by means of a small scale test. Test data are plotted by a method rendering, under certain conditions, a straight-line graph that can be projected to show how much the water table will be lowered by pumping at any specified rate for a given time. A formula is then used to determine the size of opening, or extent of workings, necessary to provide sufficient inflow to enable pumping to be maintained at that rate. At first glance this might seem the answer to a miner's prayer, but a word of caution is in order. It may not be the whole answer. Moreover, results obtained by the method described are reliable only for conditions approximating those assumed. Even where conditions do not meet this requirement, however, it may be possible to draw helpful inferences from the results, perhaps enough to facilitate another approach to evaluation of a problem. The two formulas Mr. Stuart used, the Theis formula and the one developed from it by Cooper and Jacob, were given field checks a number of years ago in valley alluvials by the Water Supply Div. of the U. S. Geological Survey and found to be reliable when the aquifer is very large in horizontal extent and sufficiently isotropic for the test well and observation wells to be in material of the same average permeability as the saturated part of the aquifer as a whole." Extensive valley alluvials, sands, and gravels can be evaluated in this way, and there are even cases in which the method could apply to porous limestones, such as flat beds of very large areal extent that have been submerged below the water table after extensive weathering. These are sometimes prolific sources of water for towns and industries. It is necessary for them to have been above the water table for some geologically long period of time in a fairly humid climate before submergence because the necessary high porosity and permeability, and large reservoir capacity, are the result of weathering, that is, of solution by the carbonic acid (H,CO3) in rainwater formed by the absorption of CO, from the air by raindrops, and this dissolving action must cease when all the H2CO3 has been consumed by re- action with the carbonate to form the more soluble bicarbonate. Consequently this weathering process is largely restricted to a zone that does not extend much below the water level, and submergence is necessary after the weathering to provide large reservoir capacity and good hydraulic continuity. On the other hand, water courses tend to form along faults and fractures in limestone, and to become enlarged by solution, well below water level when, as often happens, fresh meteoric water is circulated rapidly through them to considerable depth by hydrostatic pressure, as through an inverted syphon. Although the reservoir capacity of such water courses is relatively small they may extend far enough to tap more prolific sources. Cavities, and sometimes caves of considerable size, are found in limestones where the acid formed by the oxidation of sulphides has attacked them. This action can take place as deep below water level as surface water is carried by syphonic or artesian circulation, because the oxygen it carries in solution will not be consumed until it reacts with some reducing agent, such as a sulphide. Moreover, the formation of acid and solution of limestone in this way is not confined to the immediate vicinity of the sulphide. Oxidation of pyrite, for example, results in formation of acid in several successive stages, each taking place as more oxygen becomes available, as by the accession of fresh water into the circulation at some place beyond the sulphides. When the acid thus formed attacks the limestone, CO, is liberated and the ultimate effect of the complete oxidation of one unit of pyrite will be the removal of six times its volume of limestone as the sulphate and bicarbonate, both of which are relatively soluble. The reaction may be continued or renewed along a water course far from the site of the sulphides, where the small electric potential produced by contact with the limestone helped to start the reaction. Mr. Stuart refers2 0 caves in the old mining area in the block of Eldorado limestone southwest of the Ruby Hill fault at Eureka, Nev., and to the cavities encountered in drillholes in the downthrown block on the other side of the fault. Although he interprets these cavities as evidence that this formation was sufficiently isotropic (evenly porous and permeable) to give reliable results by the method he describes, they may, in fact, be entirely local conditions. This chapter reviews the steps which should be taken from the time it is decided to consider autogenous grinding in the development of a new ore deposit or the expansion of an existing plant up until the purchase of the new autogenous mills. In this case the term autogenous includes semi -autogenous, secondary pebble mills, and lump milling as well as fully autogenous grinding systems. Also, both wet and dry grinding alternatives have been included. Before the test program it must be decided how many bulk samples are required to properly assess the autogenous grinding possibilities of the deposit. Also, a decision must be made on where and how the samples are to be ground i.e. pilot mill at site or in established location, wet and or dry grinding, etc. In the test program itself, certain fundamental data must be obtained. The testing should include enough work to determine whether fully autogenous or semi-autogenous grinding should be used and what type produces best power efficiency. Also, all the other pertinent data should be collected such as power; tonnages; feed, charge, and product sizing; circulating loads, etc. If a secondary mill is required to produce a final grind the decision on whether a pebble or ball mill should be used may require additional test work. Finally, the concentration of the mineral may play an important part in selection of the circuit and should become a part of the final testing once the grinding has been established.

The protaxis of the North American continent consists, as is well known, of a large V-shaped area of Archæan rocks, which lie for the most part in the Dominion of Canada, and occupy an area of not less than 2,031,000 square miles. The western limit of this area extends from 'Lake Superior in a northwesterly direction to the Arctic Ocean, the southern is found along the Lower St. Lawrence as far as Labrador. A minor area, spoken of as the Adirondack region of northern New York, has a somewhat broken connection with the main body in a narrow band of igneous rock, which crosses the Upper St. Lawrence where it leaves Lake Ontario. The ancient crystallines are also presumably beneath all the later sediments, hut the above brief description outlines their principal exposures. This great rock-complex consists, for the most part, of a series of gneisses, which present great variations in both structure and composition. In certain sections areas of gneisses of the general composition of granite, and remarkably uniform in character, prevail. They consist largely, if not exclusively, of crystalline rocks in which a banding or foliation has been induced by pressure. These rocks constitute the basal member of the Laurentian system, and by later writers have been referred to as the Ottawa gneiss. In other and quite extended areas, gneisses, regarded by many as composed of altered sediments, are associated with crystalline limestones, quartzites, and much injected igneous matter. To this series the term Grenville has been applied. Both of these series of gneisses are penetrated by various igneous masses, of which the most important are great intrusioiis of several members of the gabbro family, such as anortho-sites, norites, pyroxenites, and gabbros proper; the whole form-

INTRODUCTION Since the occurrence of the first oil crisis, coun-tries of the world, especially oil-importing countries have made sustained and vigorous efforts to lessen the dependency on oil as a source of energy supply. The adoption of "Principles of Coal Policy" by the IEA Ministerial Governing Board Meeting in May, 1979 was the first formal action taken by major energy consuming countries. At the Venice Summit in June, 1980, it was agreed that production and use of coal should be doubled over the next ten years. In fact, the world coal use in 1980 showed around a 10 percent increase over the previous year. Recently, we have seen an indication that the balance of oil supply and demand in the short term have eased. But I believe that it remains vital that we continue to encourage the development and introduction of alternative energy sources. Because, from the medium and long range viewpoint the recovery of the worldwide economy will lead us to increased oil requirements and thus we will be faced with the cyclical, structural tightening situation between the supply and demand of oil. Moreover, we are still convinced that the constraint of the supply capabilities of the Middle-East nations may be increasing in the long-term, since there still remains political uncertainties among these nations. Consequently, above all, coal is viewed as an alternative energy resource available for immediate expansion of use and is given as high a priority as nuclear power. In Japan, we regard coal as the most reliable alternative energy resource to replace oil. According to the "Alternative Energy Supply Targets" approved by the Cabinet in November, 1980, the level of coal imports is estimated to approximately double by 1990, while our domestic coal production will remain nearly at the same level. The transition from oil to coal is found in the recent import levels of coal---73 mil¬lion tons in 1980, a 23 percent increase over the 59 million tons imported in 1979. There was an upsurge in steaming coal imports, reflecting the transition in feedstocks---7.2 million tons in 1980, four times over the previous year's amount. Henceforth, from the medium to long range view, the demand for coal, especially that of steaming coal is forecast to continue to grow. The timely expansion of supply capabilities is our utmost concern and should be one of the most significant goals of our comprehensive policy. The Overseas Coal Investigative Committee, a privately organized advisory panel to the Director-General of the Natural Resources and Energy Agency of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), investigated means to secure a stable supply of overseas coal. The panel presented its interim proposals in August, 1981, recommending the diversification of coal import sources, extensive use of low rank coal, as well as enhanced international cooperation between coal producing and importing countries. THE CONTENTS OF THE COMMITTEE'S REPORT Four Points for Major Consideration In order to ensure a stable supply of overseas coal, Japan needs adequate policy measures consistent with the characteristics of coal resources and environmental requirements, giving consideration to Japan's status and the role she is expected to play in the areas. From the above, great importance should be attached to the following four points: All the components of the "Coal Chain" (Namely, the development of mine sites, construction of railroads, port loading facilities, coal shipping vessels, port receiving facilities, including coal centers and international transport facilities etc.) should be reviewed and reformed with steps taken to assure efficiency consistent with the entire coal chain system. The complete formation of a coal chain system requires such lengthy lead times and huge amounts of investment that necessary measures should be undertaken well in advance utilizing long-range projections of future demands and various economic surveys. Policy planning should be conducted taking into account of harmonizing stability and economics of the supply structure. For ensuring the long-term stability and expansion of the coal trade, international cooperation on a bilateral and multi-national basis should be encouraged. Mutual understanding and close relationships are essential to facilitate the formation of the supply system and to promote the extensive use of coal. Direction and Problems Related to Supply Stability Expansion of Supply Capabilities. World coal imports in 1979 amounted to 229 million tons, of which Japan's share amounted to 59 million tons, or one fourth of the entire amount. The imports of European and Asian countries accounted for 83 million tons and 7 million tons respectively. According to the examination of the Investigative Committee, Japan's coal requirement is estimated to be between 140-150 million tons by 1990, nearly the same level as announced in the Provisional Long-Term Energy Supply and Demand Outlook in 1979. This fore¬cast is-to be revised in April, 1982. Japan's demand is expected to be met through fiscal 1985; however, by 1990, the supply is estimated to fall short of demand, particulary, in the field of steaming coal. Single cvystals were grown from high-purity magnesium containing known amounts of nitvogen in the range 0.0008 to 0.0048 wt pet. Crystals of known ovientation were tested in tension in an Instron ma chine to determine the yield strength and to obsevue wheather a yield point occurred. Slowly cooled crystals or those given a solution heat treatment did not show a yield point. However, crystals that were aged following a solution treatment showed a yield point for all of the nitrogen contents studied. It was concluded that nitrogen caused the yield point by the Cottrell mechanism. NITROGEN has been shown to produce sharp yield points in single crystals of cadmium, zinc,2'3 ß-brass,4 and iron,5,6 as well as in polycrystalline iron7 and molybdenum.8,9 Since magnesium has a structure similar to zinc and cadmium, it seemed reasonable that magnesium should also exhibit a sharp yield point provided it contained sufficient nitrogen. Bobalek and Shrader10 reported a total nitrogen content of 0.002 to 0.0065 wt pct in com- mercial magnesium alloys, an amount well in excess of that required by theory. However. magnesium differs from cadmium and zinc in that it forms a stable nitride, Mg3N2, which has a standard free energy of formation of -95,480 cal per mole at 25" c." If rather than being in solid solution, the nitrogen were predominantly combined as the nitride, it could not act to produce a yield point. This type of behavior is the basis for the elimination of strain aging and a yield point in steel by the addition of strong nitride formers such as titanium,12 columbium,13 aluminum,14 vanadium,15 and boron.16,17 Thus, there appeared to be factors both favorable and unfavorable to the production by nitrogen of a sharp yield point in magnesium, and the purpose of this investigation was to determine the actual behavior of magnesium crystals containing known amounts of nitrogen.

Beryllium bicrystals were Prepared by a seeding and floating zone-melting technique from high-purity beryllium single-crystal material. The starting material was given six floating zone purification passes prior to producing the bicrystals. Symmetric, asymmetric, and antisymmetric bicrystals were tested in tension. Included were bicrystals with boundaries both parallel and perpendicular to the tension axis. Modified symmetric bicrystals were also examined in detail. In these cases, the angles made by the slip planes with the boundary were not equal. Failure by (0001) cleavage, (1180) cleavage, and boundary separation were all observed depending on the orientation of these cleavage planes and the boundary with respect to the tension axis. Failure occurred on whichever system experienced the greatest normal stress. The origin of the fractures observed and the operative dislocation mechanisms were investigated by frac-tography and transmission electron microscopy. The results indicate that low-angle boundaries form in close proximity to the bicrystal boundary and act as sites for crack nucleation. It has been concluded that, although macroscopic compatibility was satisfied in many of the bicrystals examined, the bicrysta1 boundary was effective in Producing "early" failure by local bend plane formation as plastic deformation proceeded, followed by cleavage initiation and crack propagation. SINGLE crystals of high-purity beryllium oriented with the basal plane inclined 45 deg to the tension axis exhibit a critical resolved shear stress of about 300 psi and 200 pct extension by slipping only on the basal plane before failure by cleavage on that plane. Single crystals, oriented with the basal plane parallel to the tension axis, deform by prism slip at a critical resolved shear stress of 9000 psi and exhibit an extension of over 100 pct before failure in a ductile manner.' In contrast to the behavior of single crystals, poly-crystalline beryllium deformed in tension or bending exhibits little or no ductility at room temperature. Beryllium's lack of ductility at room temperature has been attributed to its lack of a sufficient number of independent slip systems. Beryllium has only four independent slip modes at room temperature and according to the Taylor2 and von Mises3 criteria at least five independent shear modes are necessary to completely satisfy the strain compatibility conditions at all the boundaries in a random polycrystalline sample. Studies of beryllium bicrystals thus appear to provide a convenient way in which to determine whether the condition of strain compatibility is a necessary and sufficient condition to prevent failure and whether obviously incompatible boundary conditions result in boundary separation. The 1100°c isothermal, sections of the V-Fe-Si, V-Co-Si, and V-Ni-Si systems were studied at silicon contents between 0 and 40 at. pct. The single-phase fields in the 30 and 50 at. pct Mn sections of the 1100°C tetrahedron of the V-'Wn-Fe-Si system were also determined. The direction of extension of the elongated O, R, D, and a-Mn Phase fields suggests that the stability of these phases is determined largely by the electron concentration. The peculiar shape of the above ternary a phase fields, as well as of the a phase fields in the V-;Mn-Si and Cr-MTZ-Si systems is accounted for on the assumption that in manganese-(iron-, coball-, nickel-) rich alloys silicon atoms do not exclude d electrons , while in alloys low in the above components they do. This assumption also leads to the expected electronconcentrations for q and ß-Mn phases formed by transition metals with aluminurn. In earlier work it was shown that in ternary alloy systems of transition elements the a a and certain other phases with complex structure, such as the p and R phases,3 form elongated phase fields extending in a direction corresponding to a constant electron concentration. Recently similar behavior was observed in manganese-rich ternary ß-Mn solid solutions with another transition element and with silicon, germanium, or tin,4 confirming earlier indications3 that ß-Mn is also an electron phase. The alloying behavior of silicon in these manganese-rich alloys sug- gested that the four outside electrons of silicon participate in the bonding and that the predominantly d-like bonding electrons are not excluded from the silicon sites. Presumably, some of the normally unoccupied 3d states associated with the silicon atoms are in these alloys lowered to the Fermi level;4 thus silicon behaves as if it, too, were a transition element. The manganese-rich boundary of the a phase in the V-Mn-Si system,4 as well as in the Cr-Mn-Si sys-tem,4,5 extends approximately parallel to the ß-Mn phase boundary, corresponding to the transition ele-mentlike behavior of silicon described above. However, at lower manganese contents (i.e., in the high-vanadium or -chromium region) the a phase field in both ternary systems mentioned extends in a direction roughly perpendicular to that of its manganese-rich boundary, a phenomenon that is apparently inconsistent with the behavior of silicon in the manganese-rich alloys. A similar, although somewhat less pronounced, extension of the a phase occurs also in the high-vanadium (low-iron) region of the V-Fe-Si system at 1175C, but reportedly not in the V-Co-Si or V-Ni-Si systems at the same temperature.5 The present work was undertaken to investigate in more detail the extension of the a phase (as well as of other electron phases that may be present) in the last three systems and to elucidate this phenomenon, which has not been satisfactorily explained previously. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Most of the alloys were melted in an arc furnace, using a water-cooled copper crucible under helium atmosphere. The transition metals were of better than 99.9 pct purity and the silicon used was 99.98 pct pure. Alloys containing less than 20 pct V were induction-melted in recrystallized alumina crucibles under argon atmosphere.

While there is still room for improvement in the efficiency of some of the arrangements for drying the peat previous to briquetting, a very satisfactory fuel is made at a price which enables it to compete with coal. During the late strike in the anthracite regions of Pennsylvania, the manufacture of peat: briquettes received a considerable impetus, and possibly the attention directed to it on this account may result in a. considerable increase in the output. g samples of Cu-20 wt pct Ag alloy have been mdercooled to a maximum of 197°C by melting under a slag of commercial soda-lime glass in a vitreous silica crucible. No grain refinement of the primary copper was observed in samples undercooled to the maximum of 197°C. When the samples contained a small amount of oxygen, the copper dendrites were partially recrystallized at undercoolings greater than 97°C. In previous papers'-3 reporting the grain structure of undercooled silver and copper, it was observed that grain refinement was dependent on both undercooling and oxygen content. Grain refinement occurred in undercooled silver when the degree of undercooling exceeded the range 153" to 175"C, while in Ag-0 alloys (0.12 wt pct) fine equiaxed grains were exhibited when undercooling was greater than 50°C. Similarly, copper samples undercooled as much as 208°C displayed fan-shaped growth from a single nucleation site, while the grain structure of Cu-O alloys (0.08 wt pct) was fine and equiaxed at undercoolings larger than 150°C. Thus the presence of oxygen greatly reduced the undercooling at which grain refinement occurred. It was also observed that the change in grain size resulted from recrystallization and was not due to an enhanced nucleation rate in the liquid-solid transformation. It is possible that the influence of oxygen on recrystallization is due primarily to its presence as a solute element. walker4,' reported that, although a grain size change did not occur in pure nickel until the undercooling exceeded 150°C, small grains were observed in samples of Ni-Cu alloy solidified at small and large degrees of undercooling. Jackson et al.6 suggested that the fine grained structure of the Ni-Cu alloy resulted from the melting off of dendrite arms during recalescence. This remelting process may occur in alloys as a result of segregation during freezing which causes a variation in liquidus temperature from point to point within a dendrite. It was therefore decided to undercool copper with a metallic alloying element to ascertain whether the presence of a metallic solute would have a similar effect to oxygen in inducing grain refinement. A Cu-Ag alloy was chosen, since both metals had been shown to behave similarly on undercooling. The alloy Cu-20 wt pct Ag was selected since the eutectic constituent outlines the initial growth form of the primary copper, so that the as-frozen grain structure is not obscured if subsequent recrystallization occurs. This paper describes the results of undercooling experiments carried out with Cu-20 pct Ag samples undercooled to a maximum of 197°C and the effect of oxygen content on the grain structure of the undercooled samples. EXPERIMENTAL Melting was carried out in a small cylindrical resistance furnace using "fine" silver granulate and oxygen-free high conductivity copper. The procedure adopted was to melt the required quantity of silver in air in a clean vitreous silica crucible for approximately 15 min, freeze, and add granulated commercial soda-lime glass to form a complete surface slag cover, after which the sample was melted and frozen several times to reduce the oxygen content. The glass slag cover was approximately 3 in. thick. Pieces of copper (=50 g) were added to the crucible until the required quantity to make 350-g samples of alloy had been charged. Each piece was added quickly to the crucible which was held at a temperature slightly above the melting point of silver. The piece was quickly pushed beneath the glass to minimize oxidation and any oxide coating usually decomposed before the piece had settled down into the silver. After the full quantity of copper had been added, the melt was stirred with a silica rod to hasten homogenization and a Pt/Pt 13 pct Rh thermocouple enclosed in a vitreous silica sheath inserted for temperature measurement. Heating and cooling curves were recorded on a potentiometric chart recorder fitted with a zero suppression unit. The milli-voltage range of the recorder was adjusted so that temperatures could be read to 1°C. Heating and cooling curves were taken every hour until three consecutive readings gave the same solidus-liquidus range, consistent with the solidus-liquidus range for this alloy composition by reference to Hansen and Anderko.7 Metallographic examination of samples frozen at this stage, failed to show any variation in composition from bottom to top of the ingot. Geophysical methods of prospecting taken as a whole do not seem to offer much promise to a young man planning to enter them in the future. They have come to stay, to be sure, and they will continue in at least moderate use for a long time. Domestic use of those methods presumably is at a maximum at the present time. Geophysical prospecting is expensive; the effects of the law of diminishing returns in efficiency in finding prospects can already be recognized. Small oil companies, independent oil operators, and royalty buyers have been doing much geophysical work. But in face of the increasing costs of discovery of prospects and in face of the probably decreasing favorability of the prospects discovered, I expect to see a sharp drop in their use of geophysics within the next 10 years. The major oil companies and the larger small oil companies will continue to use geophysics indefinitely, but it seems doubtful whether the very extensive domestic campaigns of a few companies will be maintained for many years, certainly not for 10 years. The use of the geophysical methods in foreign countries has not yet reached its peak, and probaby will continue to increase for several years. That peak level of activity will probably be held for 10 years, although the site of maximum activity will shift from country to country; by the end of 25 years from now, I should expect the foreign use of the methods to have leveled off to one-fourth to one-half the peak level. Foreign service in geophysics does not seem to offer an attractive career, except for men of exceptional disposition. Young men just out of college, who are willing and who can afford to spend three or four years having a fling at adventure before settling down, will find it attractive, but when their tour of foreign service is over, they probably will have harder work finding a job than when they were seniors, and their foreign experience will count for little, except for further foreign service. A few men, mainly the higher men, will have headquarters at civilized or semi-civilized cities and towns or at permanent oil-company towns, and can

When the nucleation of silicon on a sapphire substrate is accomplished by gradually decreasing the substrate temperature while subjecting it to a constant impingement rate of hydrogen and silicon tetrachloride, the resulting deposit is characterized by widely separated islands of silicon scattered over an "open sea" of sapphire. Analysis shows that nucleation takes place mainly on sites of large adsorption energy, about 85 kcal per mole, and small surface concentration, about 108 cm-2. Crystal growth proceeds rapidly on these nuclei and results in enough depletion of Sicl4 from the ambient gas to suppress further nucleation. The technological importance of single-crystal films on dielectric substrates has prompted considerable work on the deposition of silicon on sapphire. This paper is concerned with the deposition of silicon, by the reduction of silicon tetrachloride with hydrogen, onto heated sapphire substrates. The apparatus consisted of a temperature-controlled container for the silicon tetrachloride along with gas lines and flow meters necessary to convey a hydrogen-silicon tetrachloride mixture to a reaction chamber constructed of quartz tubing. Heat for the substrate was provided by means of an inductively heated graphite susceptor. The observations pertinent to the present discussion were made with an American Optical Co. high-temperature microscope which allowed us to make motion pictures of the deposition process at a magnification of approximately 50 times. Two main categories of experiments were carried out: one on determination of critical condensation temperatures and the other on the deposition of epitaxial silicon films on the sapphire substrates. Critical condensation temperatures were determined in the traditional way by raising the substrate temperature well above that at which condensation could be expected at the impingement rates being studied and then gradually lowering the temperature until the condensation of the first silicon was observed. This was done initially with ellipsometry-type detection but it was soon discovered that the deposits were occurring as widely separated islands and groups of islands scattered over an "open sea" of sapphire. We have called these archipelago formations. They were most easily detected by optical microscopy. Data gathered from experiments of this type have been collected in Table I. Motion pictures of the formation of archipelago patterns show that the nucleation period lasts about 10 sec if the substrate temperature and impingement rate are kept constant. Essentially all of the nuclei are formed in a few seconds and all subsequent silicon deposition merely adds to the size of the established nuclei. After an archipelago formation has matured at a given substrate temperature and impingement rate, it is very difficult to stimulate any further nucleation in the open space between islands. Lowering the substrate temperature will occasionally stimulate nucleation but increasing the impingement rate hardly ever produces any more new nuclei. It should also be emphasized that the nucleation rates appear to be very small, about 104 cm-2 sec-1. They will receive special attention in the analysis section. Another series of experiments was performed employing a systematic variation of substrate temperatures and impingement rates approximating those expected to produce epitaxy. Sapphire substrates with surfaces normal to the 2233 direction were used. In contrast to the procedure that produces archipelago patterns, these films were deposited by raising the substrate temperature to a desired value at which time the silicon tetrachloride and hydrogen flow was begun. Of course, these depositions produced mainly films that were continuous. After removal from the deposition chamber, the substrate and silicon film were examined microscopically to determine the nature of the deposit and by X-ray diffraction to determine the extent to which a single-crystal film had been achieved. Results of these experiments are summarized in Table 11. Of interest for the present analysis is the fact that epitaxy appears to be confined to a fairly narrow temperature range between about 1050" and 1150°C. This also will be discussed in the analysis section. ANALYSIS In this section we shall apply nucleation theory to the data presented above with the objective of testing

Coprecipitation of anionic and cationic polyelectrolytes has been applied to floccula-tion of several mineral systems. Results obtained in a study of the flocculation of kaolinite and hematite suspensions of polycationic and polyanionic electrolytes are presented. Greatly increased settling rates were observed following precipitation of positive and negative polyelectrolytes on the surface of finely divided minerals in aqueous suspension. The ratios of polycationic to polyanionic electrolytes required to produce maximum sedimentation have been shown to correspond closely with the equivalence points obtained by light scattering studies of systems containing the positive and negative polyelectrolytes by themselves. DISPERSION of colloids has been of interest to surface chemists for many years. Flocculation studies have been employed to evaluate the limits of colloid stability. In water suspensions, colloids become unstable and flocculate when the ( potential, the potential of the kinetic solvation sheath, falls to a value at which van der Waals forces may act to draw the particles together. This may happen through an adjustment of the pH of the suspension or by addition of a salt. Optimum conditions for rapid formation of large flocs are found in the region of minimum ( potential. In addition to these well known considerations, colloids in water suspensions are known to be flocculated by certain large organic macromolecules. These polyelectrolytes in some cases minimize the i potential and in other instances increase the attractive forces by supplying sites for hydrogen bonding.' Use of organic polyelectrolytes in flocculation of mineral colloids has increased rapidly in recent years. These materials are now recognized as indispensable aids to fluid-solid separations in many extractive metallurgical operations. They have been found to increase both the settling rate in thickeners and the filtration rate of filters. In the elucidation of the characteristics of these organic reagents as floc-culants in this laboratory, it was discovered that interaction of certain polyelectrolytes had a surprisingly good effect on flocculation of mineral colloids. Experimental Procedure: The anionic flocculants used in this study were Lytron 886 and 887, produced by Monsanto Chemical Co. Both reagents are copolymers of vinyl acetate and maleic anhydride. Lime is added to Lytron 886, whereas Lytron 887 is all organic. These reagents possess two carboxyl groups for each acetate group and are therefore anionic in character. The cationic reagents used were the Peter Cooper Co. 1-X and 2-X glues. The structures are not definitely known, but the re- agents are amines and are cationic in character. The glues were prepared in the chrome-alum form. Both types of reagents may be classified as polyelectrolytes in that they are high molecular weight polymers and ionize in water. All data presented are in terms of sedimentation rate, measured in 250-ml glass-stoppered graduated cylinders. With suitable precautions such measurements are fairly reproducible and provide a sensitive means for selecting important parameters such as pH, reagent concentration, and floc size and density.2 Agitation was standardized with five complete end over end cycles of the suspensions in the stoppered graduated cylinders.

One of the best known of the early mining districts of Nevada was that at Eureka, where gold was first produced in 1864. While the most productive period for the district was during the early 1900s, production was maintained until World War II. During this time it is said that the Eureka district produced as much as $200 million from over 3,200 km (2,000 miles) of tunnels and workings. The Windfall Mine was discovered in 1902; and a 100 ton cyanide plant was operated there during the periods 1907 to 1912 and 1932 to 1940. Since 1974, however, Windfall Venture has been operating a unique heap leaching facility on the site of the old Windfall Mine. Gold at the Windfall occurs primarily in the Cambrian Hamburg dolomite which has been "sanded" and in which the original cementing material has been destroyed. The gold is micron sized and is accompanied by anomalous amounts of arsenic and mercury; however, the ore is low in base metals which distinguishes it from the typical Eureka district ores. Mining the ore causes it to break down into very fine sizes, approximately 50% minus 150 microns (100 mesh). Conventional heap leaching by spraying proved to be impossible; and extensive test work on alternate methods, aided by the United States Bureau of Mines, was conducted using 9 m (30 ft) high columns and then large tonnage heaps. The leaching procedure adopted was to build 10.6 m (35 ft) high heaps on a 50 mm (2 in.) asphalt pad covered with a layer of gravel for drainage assisted by perforated pipe drains and gravel-packed sumps. A berm is constructed around the top of each pad and cyanide solution is allowed to “pond” on top of the heap. The resulting percolation is at the rate of 24 liters per sq m per hr (0.6 gal per sq ft per hr), a figure about 2.4 times the average used in other heap leaching operations. The dolomite furnishes its own protective alkalinity and no lime or caustic is used in the solution which contains 0.4 kg per mt (0.8 lb per st) of NaCN. Pregnant solution from the heaps averages about 0.7 g Au per mt (0.02 oz per st) with a cyanide content of about 0. 2 kg per mt (0.4 lb per st) and a pH of plus 9. Addition of NaCN brings the pH of the leach solution up to 11 to 12. Carbon adsorption of the gold was originally done in six enclosed columns mounted in a trailer but five conventional columns have been substituted as the size of the operations has increased. Carbon stripping is with hot caustic, cyanide and 10% ethanol solution. The

Diffusion kinetics in disordered hcp Cd-Mg alloys have been investigated by means of the Kirkendall effect and concentration-penetration curves determined with an electron-microprobe analyzer. Self-diffusion coefficients of both species were determined at the three marker compositions obtained, averaging 27.6, 46. 7, and 78.1 at. pct Mg, by means of the Darken analysis. These coefficients were then corrected for the unequal and concentration-dependent partial molar volumes of the two elements with the Balluffi analysis, and for the vacancy flux effect by the Manning analysis. The latter correction reduced the Balluffi correction produced larger changes in the self-diffusiv-ities; neither, however, produced statistically significant changes in the Do's or the H'S. The most striking result of this investigation is that at all three compositions and at all temperatures studied both the uncorrected and corrected self-difjusivities of magnesium are higher than those of cadmium. The Cd-Mg system is the first one found in which the higher melting, lower vapor pressure element diffuses more rapidly. Both an empirical correlation due to Toth and Searcy and considerations of the atomic mechanism of diffusion indicate that this anomaly is probably due to a comparatively low value of the activation energy required for a magnesium atom and a vacancy to exchange sites, perhaps occasioned by the higher compressibility of magnesium atoms. KIRKENDALL effect studies have been previously reported for only two hcp solid solutions: the E phase of the Zn-Cu system1 and the a phase of the Cd-Hg system.' In neither investigation were the marker-movement studies supplemented with the concentration-penetration curve determinations necessary to evaluate self-diffusivities by means of the atano and the Darken analyses. The present program was undertaken to obtain both types of data on a hexagonal solid solution in order to provide more detailed information relevant to the mechanism of diffusion in this type of lattice. The Cd-Mg system was chosen for this study because the disordered solid solution extends across the entire phase diagram at temperatures above 253"c5 and the substantial difference in the melting points of the component pure metals promised that marker movements would occur at reasonably rapid rates should the diffusivities of the two species be as unequal as might be anticipated. The experimental convenience of the relatively low melting points of cad-miun and magnesium and the availability of extensive and accurate activity data6 (required for application of the Darken analysis) were additional reasons for selecting this alloy system. Since the anisotropy of diffusion is not large in either pure cadmium7 or pure magnesium,' the diffusion couples were prepared from polycrystalline components. The presence of a well-defined texture in the couples—the c axis of individual crystals tended to be normal to the diffusion direction— however, provides a fair degree of crystallographic definition to the data obtained. The principal (and entirely unexpected) finding of this investigation, that magnesium, the high-melting low-vapor pressure element, diffuses more rapidly than cadmium, in contradiction to a broad range of results in fcc and bcc alloys, as well as in the previously studied hcp alloys,172 makes the self-diffusivity determinations of immediate interest in understanding the origin of this anomalous result. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The cadmium (Belmont Smelting and Refining Co.) and magnesium (Dow Chemical Co.) used in this study were both of 99.99 pct purity. Alloys containing 51.0 and 65.6 at. pct Mg were prepared from these materials by melting under a MgC12-base flux in a high-purity graphite crucible. These alloys were subsequently hot-worked and then homogenized in a helium atmosphere at temperatures close to their solidus points. Sandwich-type diffusion couples of the type g/d/g were prepared from the pure metals by solid-state diffusion. Two-piece alloy couples of Mg/65.5 at. pct Mg (Mg/gCd) and Cd/51.0 at. pct Mg (Cd/CdMg) were welded by a liquation technique. The individual components of both types of couple were initially cylinders 1.27 cm in diam and in length; the ends of these cylinders were machined accurately flat and parallel. For both welding techniques, the pure cadmium cylinders and the alloys were chemically polished in a mixture of 40 pct ethyl alcohol, 40 pct hydrogen peroxide (30 pct conc), and 20 pct nitric acid,g while those of pure magnesium were polished in a solution of 10 pct nitric acid in ethyl alcohol.' Immediately afterwards, both metals were rinsed in freshly distilled acetone, and then in similarly purified methanol.' The Mg/Cd/g couples were assembled in a carefully cleaned stainless-steel welding fixture, in which a screw operating through a self-centering arrangement permitted a controlled pressure to be exerted upon a couple prior to welding.'' Tungsten marker wires 0.005 cm in diam were placed at the d:g interfaces of some of these couples, and imbedded in the couples during the application of pressure. Such accounts as have been published are antiquated and contained in publications mostly out of print. The increased attention now attracted to the natural resources of Brazil, and the probability that American capital will be, in the near future, largely invested there, will make an up-to-date account specially useful at this time. Soon after the Jesuits founded what is to-day the city of S?o Paulo, gold was discovered in the streams of the neighborhood; and this incited the natives, known as paulistas, to look for it farther afield. After many expeditions into the interior, gold was found in quantity in placer-deposits in the vicinity of Ouro Preto, in 1699, by a prospecting party headed by Antonio Dias. The name of Ouro Preto (black gold) was given because of the superficial dark coating of the gold, and the inhabitants of the district were known as mineiros (miners). Later on, the placers of Cuiaba, in the State of Matto Grosso, were discovered in 1718, and those of the State of Goyaz in 1724. All this territory was at the time a private colony, but on account of its increasing importance it was taken over by the Crown, and in 1739 a royal governor was appointed, with his nominal capital in S?o Paulo, though for a number of years the real capital was Ouro Preto. In 1711 Ouro Preto was raised to the rank of a city, with the name of Villa Rica de Ouro Preto (" rich city of black gold"); and in 1720, by reason of administrative difficulties, Minas Geraes was constituted a separate colony from S?o Paulo, with Villa Rica as its capital.
