Strategically situated in almost the heart of the leading fertilizer-consuming area of the United States, Tennessee long has ranked second only to Florida as a phosphate-producing state. Since 1932 its share of the national output of phosphate rock has increased steadily, and in 1937 its production mounted to an all-time record. More significant even than the increase in tonnage are the forward strides in technology. The Tennessee Valley Authority's research program has led to quasicommer-cia1 operations using hydroelectric power to manufacture concentrated phosphatic fertilizer that is used to further the farmer education program designed to streamline the fertilizer business and halt the appalling waste of farm land by soil erosion. Even more stimulating to chemically minded imaginations is the production of elemental phosphorus by a private company that not only has succeeded in extracting it from the phosphate rock in electric furnaces but actually has contrived to capture it and to transport it safely in tank cars. New values have been created for low-grade phosphate deposits, and the economic life of reserves has been lengthened while the waste of former years goes back into the mills for recovery of its values by modernized methods. Tennessee's phosphate-mining industry dates from the discovery of blue rock in Lewis County in December 1893. Its known reserves are of the order of 101,500,000 tons, which compares with the production of 825,099 tons in 1937; that is, 21 per cent of the phosphate-rock output of the whole nation. The total output reported from 1894 until July 1. 1938, was approximately 19,000,000 tons. Offcial estimates of reserves are overly conservative and evidence submitted before a joint Congressional committee in November 1938 places "probable" reserves at more than 6,000,000,000 tons.

The rapid advance, during recent years, in the manufacture of articles that have been in common use for generations and the development of new materials entering into appliances and devices unheard of fifty years ago have created a demand for some of the more common non-metallic minerals. To supply this demand there has quietly developed a branch of the mining industry of which little is known by most mining engineers —the mineral-filler industry. In this paper, and generally in the trade, the term mineral filler is applied to a mineral used in its natural state after mechanical preparation only (such as grinding, milling and washing), without undergoing any chemical change and without exerting any chemical action on the substance with which it is incorporated. The consumption of mineral fillers is confined chiefly to large manufacturing centers in the Eastern and Northern Statcs. Where available, materials originating near the place of consumption are used, as most fillers bring a comparatively low price and, frequently, the freight may equal the cost of the finished filler at the mine. The Southern States have abundant deposits of non-metallic minerals suitable for fillers, which supply the manufacturing industries in adjacent states. Many of these deposits are equal to, or superior, in quality to those mined in the North, but they can not compete with them because of the freight rates. The mineral-filler industry has felt the present depression, but it has suffered less than most mining industries, for as a rule the mills are simple, the overhead expenses are low, and the labor is entirely local and can revert to farm work when the plant closes down. Many other deposits in the southern district will undoubtedly be developed when business revives and freight rates are adjusted. Most of the non-metallic mines are small and the tonnage handled is low in comparison with the tonnage involved in modern large-scale mining of coal, iron, copper, etc. On the other hand, at nearly all non-metallic

ThiS paper .summarizes the development and perform. ance of the Coldwater Oil field, Isabella County, Mich. Production is obtained at a depth of 3750 ft from a dolomite reservoir, which is probably both Rogers City and Dundee. There appears to be no persistent barrier to vertical fluid movement between the Rogers City and Dundee, and both formations are believed to have a common original oil-water contact. No we1ls are open to production at the level of the Dundee. The discovery of the field in 1944 was followed by the drilling of 81 producing wells and nine dry holes. By the end of 1952, the field had produced 12,763,000 bbl of oil, at which time 69 active wells were producing 3600 B/D oil and 21,000 B/D water. The reservoir has an effective natural water drive, and bottom-hole pressure has declined 75 psi from an original pressure of 1453 psi. Oil is undersaturated at reservoir conditions with a solution GOR of 512 cu ft/bbl and a saturation pressure of 1190 psi. INTRODUCTION Although the Coldwater Field is now in its ninth year of production, it ranks seventh in cumulative recovery, and second in current daily oil production in the State. Following complete development of the field in 1946, it has consistently contributed approximately 11 per cent of Michigan's daily production. Coldwater appears to have a greater pay thickness than most fields producing from the Rogers City forma- tion in the west central part of the Michigan basin. Except as influenced by the extent of closure and the thickness of the oil column, reservoir performance is believed to be representative of Rogers City fields in this part of the basin. For this reason, it is felt that the following presentation of factual data for the field will be of general interest. HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT Discovery of the Coldwater field during Aug., 1944, followed favorable subsurface geological correlations and core tests drilled to a shallow stratigraphic marker horizon. The field is located in the west central part of the Michigan Basin in Coldwater Township (T16N-R6W), Isabella County. It is 60 miles west-northwest of Bay City, and near the geographic center of the southern peninsula of Michigan. The discovery well flowed 200 bbl of oil the first 24 hours from the Rogers City dolomite at a depth of approximately 3750 ft. Field production is principally from the Rogers City with a minor amount assumed to come from the underlying Dundee dolomite, although none of the wells are open to production at the level of the Dundee. Both the Rogers City and Dundee formations belong to the Devonian system (See Geologic Column-Fig. I.) In addition to Rogers City-Dundee oil production, sweet gas is produced from the Michigan Stray sand of the Mississippian system at a depth of 1400 ft. The gas reservoir has approximately the same areal extent as the underlying oil reservoir. Although gas production is an important feature of the Coldwater field, this report is concerned only with the oil reservoir. The productive area is approximately 3200 acres. The pool is developed on a 40 acre spacing pattern with wells drilled in the center of the north half of 40 acre tracts, except for a few off-pattern wells drilled along

Fracture under low-velocity free-fall and double impact and under slow compression have been investigated. The pattern of breakage and the size distribution of resulting fragments of sand-cement and glass spheres have been determined. Photoelasticity methods were used to simulate the stress distributions in free-fall impact in order to explain the observed patterns of breakage. Oblique fracture planes, occurring only in free-fall impact, develop along lines which coincide with the trajectories of maximum compression as determined by mathematical analysis. Breakage efficiencies for different modes of fracture were compared for both types of spheres. For the same specimen and loading system, static loading and low-velocity dynamic loading induce geometrically similar stress fields resulting in reasonably similar fracture patterns and shapes of fragments. This work had its origin in a desire to understand three fundamental processes involved in autogenous comminution: namely; free-fall impact, double impact, and slow compression. To simplify the investigation, it is preferable to reduce the entire multi-stage fracture process to its most elementary form; that is, to study products resulting from a single-stage operation, such as the breakage of a specimen under single fracture conditions. The goal of this research is to study the energy utilization in the single fracture of brittle specimens and to relate the pattern of breakage and the resultant fragment size distribution with the nature of the material, the specimen size, the manner of load application, and the rate of loading. Published works on single fracture have mainly been concerned with tests on large (> 1-in.) irregular mineral pieces, especially coal and coke. These were mainly friability tests employing a single blow on closely sized pieces. More recently, small mineral specimens in the sieve range and glass spheres have been investigated.5-7 Kick8 has reported free-fall and double impact tests with large large cast-iron, cement, and clay spheres. The establishment of a minimum breaking height independent of size in the free-fall impact tests, and the direct proportionality between the minimum work required for fracture and the volume of the specimen in double impact tests were used by Kick as an experimental proof of his classical law of "Proportional Resistances." In the present work, spherical shapes were chosen because of their simple body geometry and consequent impact and stress field symmetry. Because the study involves several physical principles in connection with brittle-fracture, it may be of interest in fields where the strength of materials is of importance. APPARATUS The equipment for the free-fall impact testing is illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. This consisted of a massive (17 x 17 x 3-in.) hard steel plate onto which specimens were dropped and a specimen release mechanism which could be set at any desired height up to 10 ft above the plate so that the impact velocity could be varied up to about 25 ft per sec. Double impact breakage is characterized by two points of loading situated at opposite poles. For this mode of breakage the apparatus was modified (Figs. 3, 4 and 5) so that a falling mass provided an impact of predetermined magnitude on a specimen resting on the plate. A spring-loaded device operated immediately after fracture to arrest the falling mass and to record its residual kinetic energy. Precautions were taken to avoid secondary breakage. Slow compression tests were performed on a conventional hydraulic testing machine, the specimen being held between two hardened parallel bearing blocks. In the case of glass spheres, carbide bits were used. Photoelasticity studies were performed on two-dimensional models held in a loading frame equipped with a force gauge (Fig. 6). The models were viewed in a polariscope and isochromatic fringe patterns were recorded photographically. Although there is now an extensive literature on the bleaching clays, not a great deal of material is to be found concerning the geological features of these deposits and their bearing on problems of exploration and development. At the same time, chemical and crystallographic research on the clay minerals during the past few years has laid a suitable foundation upon which to base conclusions of economic value drawn from field observations. All of the criteria and deductions herein presented are based upon extensive field work by the senior author, both in the United States and Canada, and when .subjected to the ultimate tests of development and exploitation they have held up remarkably well, despite the fact that many of these conclusions apparently have not been reviewed in the literature heretofore. The nomencelature of the bleaching clays is rather confusing in the light of present-day commercial standards and has even led to litigation.'" The old term "fuller's earth" is largely based upon trade usage and the definition of the term therefor? is dependent upon the changing standards of commerce. For statistical purposes the Bureau of Mines8' classes as "fuller's earth" all natural bleaching or filtering claylike materials that possess high adsorptive capacity without previous chemical treatment or activation. Conversely, the so-called activated or acid activated clays are now generally recognized as any clay mineral or mixture of the clay minerals whose adsorptive capacity has been developed to commercial standards by chemical or physical treatment. Therefore, without attempting to propose any additions to the nomenclaturc: of bleaching clays, this paper will refer to naturally adsorptive clays and activable clays, respecbively, for the two types indicated.

Nonferrous alloys upon which desirable properties can be conferred by heat treatment are becoming of increasing industrial importance. The alloys of copper with a constituent which has a solubility varying with temperature are materials of this character. Some of the constituents which are effective in producing a change in the mechanical properties of these alloys upon heat treatment are, according to Corson,' nickel and silicon, iron and silicon, cobalt and silicon, and chromium and silicon. In addition to these elements, Gregg2 states that the combination of beryllium and silicon is effective in producing age-hardening characteristics in copper. The effect of these elements, however, as dispersion-hardening constituents in the copper alpha solid solutions does not seem to have been studied in any considerable detail. This paper deals with the heat treatment and properties of three alpha brasses containing 3 per cent. of nickel plus silicon in the proportion necessary to form the compound nickel silicide, Ni2Si. Some information of a preliminary nature in regard to the hardening by heat treatment of phosphor bronze containing the same percentages of nickel and silicon is included. The method of hardening the alloys, which is effective in increasing the tensile strength and proportional limit, is similar to that used in the case of duralumin type aluminum alloys. It consists of a quench from a temperature at which the hardening constituent is in solid solution, followed by an aging at a lower temperature to precipitate the dissolved constituent in a dispersed condition. This results in an increased resistance of the alloy to deformation with an attendant improvement in the tensile properties.

NATURE has provided us with many metals, but with few really good ones, and frequently the better metals are the rarer. It is to this circumstance that many physical metallurgists, inventors, and just plain experimenters owe their employment, for much of their work is directed, consciously or otherwise, toward the alleviation of some of the more serious shortcomings of the cheaper, less noble, and weaker metals; by alloying, age-hardening, passivating, cladding, plating, and other useful dodges, which sometimes permit the substitution of one of the less gifted metals for one of the really good ones. As a matter of fact, the varied needs of our complex civilization could be quite well met with only five metals, if they were sufficiently abundant, and one of the five would certainly be platinum, the most noble and versatile that nature provides. Many metals are difficult to handle and seem to take pleasure in defying their investigators to find good uses for them, and finally when a use is found it is frequently quite a specific one; in other words, a hole has to be found--or perhaps made-to fit the peg. It is for this reason that a large amount of research must be con- ducted before the more recalcitrant metals become really useful. In platinum, however, we have a metal that inherently possesses so many valuable attributes that it became useful as soon as methods for producing it in massive ductile form were devised, and once its complicated chemical behavior was understood it became principally an aid to research rather than the subject thereof. THE solubility of nitrogen in iron and steel has been of considerable interest due to the role of nitrogen in strain-aging and in quench-aging. It is generally considered that quench-aging is the result of precipitation of carbide and nitride particles from supersaturated solid solution, while strain-aging results from the segregation of carbon and nitrogen atoms to dislocations.1-9 The rate of strain-aging is controlled primarily by the amount of carbon and nitrogen in solution and the temperature. Education is for the purpose of developing citizenship, and, if it is pursued for the additional purpose of preparing for a professional career, such as engineering, it is also directed to developing a knowledge of essential science, aptitude for the application of science to practical situations, and a knowledge of the industrial art in which the engineer will be engaged. The process of education required for engineering must of necessity extend beyond the classroom into industry. For that reason, the education of engineers should be divided as between the university and industry. Specialization in engineering should logically come as a result of experience in an industry. The student cannot take the time in a university, and, the university cannot teach the skills required to develop a specialist without sacrifice to the more essential broad purposes of formal education. In addition to talent in science, aptitude in the application of scientific fact, and knowledge of the industrial art, the engineer should possess certain personal qualities which are helpful in the pursuit of a professional career. Those personal qualities are: the ability to work as a partner in an enterprise, the ability to do jobs in a way whereby job performance is a means of gaining experience and increased responsibility, the capacity to write and speak in an understandable manner, and, a Proper regard for the "significance of answers." These pcrsOnal qualities may be of almost equal importance to acabemic accomplishments in the field of science. Development of such personal qualities are an essential part of the student's training in the university and in industry. They can be developed effectively through the leadership of instructors. Compulsory Education Nature played a mean trick On the human race when the evolutionary Process failed to develop in the individual a capacity to inherit knowledge. Were knowledge transmissible in a cumulative manner from generation to generation, mankind would be by inheritance wise beyond measure within a few generations. Then there would be little if any need for a "system of education." As matters stand, however, all must suffer the burden of starting life at the "zero " level of learning from which station each rises depending upon individual capacity to assimilate knowledge left of record by our predecessors and the individual effort exerted to compensate for Nature's failure to endow the offspring with intelligence. In the United States some degree of education is generally regarded as essential and necessary. Therefore, all citizens are subjected by law to an educational process covering the primary school age from six to sixteen years. Beyond the schooling required by law, many attend secondary schools, and beyond that, schools of higher learning. Our standard of living is at a level that permits an increasingly large fraction of the population the opportunity to go through all of the formal educational process. THE physical and chemical structure of the oxide films formed on metals and alloys is of interest in our understanding of their protective properties. According to Pilling and Bedworth,1 if the specific volume of the oxide is equal to or greater than that of the metal, a compact or continuous structure results; if the volume of the oxide is less, a cellular or porous structure forms. With the cellular type of coating the surface layer of oxide offers no impedance to oxidation; at a given temperature the rate of oxidation is quite constant. On the other hand, the compact type of coating acts as an effective barrier to oxygen and the rate of oxidation will follow a parabolic law. The recent work of Gulbransen2 and of Leontis and Rhines3 on the oxidation of magnesium indicates that it is not necessary for the volume of the oxide to be greater than that of the metal in order that the oxidation may follow a parabolic rate law. One exception to the rule of Pilling and Bedworth' is noted by Scheil;4 namely, tungsten. At 500° and 700°C long-time oxidations indicate a linear rate law with time. However, Dunn's5 oxidation measurements from 700° to 1000°C indicate that a parabolic rate law is followed. The oxide is mainly yellow W03 with a thin layer of the blue oxide. Preliminary results on the oxidation of tungsten6 in the temperature range 400° to 500°C indicate that the oxidation does proceed according to a parabolic rate law. Irrespective of the actual rate law that tungsten may obey, it is of interest to compare the results obtained on the oxidation of tungsten in the thin film region with those found when the metal is scaling. A time-temperature study of the oxides formed on both molybdenum and tungsten may indicate whether there exist any peculiarities in the oxide structures of the thin film region compared with those of the scaling region of oxidation. In a recent paper the authors' presented an investigation of the structures of the oxide films formed on the metals iron, cobalt, nickel, chromium and copper. The results of these studies are presented in graphical form as existence diagrams of the oxides on a time-temperature scale. The existence diagrams of the oxides occurring on some of the metals are simple and show few chemical transitions, but there are many cases in which the physical state of the oxide surface changes as a function of time and temperature, as evidenced by the appearance or disappearance of orientation effects and sharpness of patterns. I. HISTORY OF OIL DEVELOPMENT IN MEXICO THE occurrence of oil or "tar" in Mexico was mentioned as early as the seventeenth century by Friar Sagahun, who gives the Indian name "chapopote," by which these asphalt seepages are still called. This asphalt was apparently used, as it has been used by primitive people in many parts of the world, in religious ceremonies and for medicinal purposes. Travellers also report that the ruins in Yucatan and the pyramids in southern Mexico show traces of the use of "chapopote" as a building cement.1 DeGolyer says that the first attempt to exploit oil or gas in Mexico in a commercial way is shown by the records of the Memoria de Fomento of 1865, when permission was granted to a Senor Ildefonso Lopez to exploit the deposits of petroliferous substances in the San Jose de Ias Rusias area in the State of Tamaulipas. Other concessions follow, and probably refer to surface seepages which occur in that district. This was several years after the discovery of oil in Pennsylvania. In 1868, a well 125 ft. deep was drilled by a company organized in Mexico City, in what is now known as the Furbero district, and a little oil was refined there. In 1873, residents of Tampico denounced seepages along the Tamesi River, and asphalt was mined near Tempoal in the Canton of Tantoyuca. No drilling was attempted. But between 1880 and 1883 several shallow wells were drilled for oil in Mexico, two of them being near the present Potrero de Llano field west of Tuxpam. The wells were drilled by a Boston company with Canadian rigs, and are said too have reached a depth of about 400 ft., while one is reported to have flowed. Several other abortive attempts were made to drill for oil between 1885 and the beginning of the present century, about which time the Mexican, Petroleum & Liquid Fuel Co., Ltd., in which Cecil Rhodes was interested drilled 24 wells unsuccessfully, several of them as deep as 1,500 ft., in the State -

Research and Development, once considered a luxury item only for well-heeled companies, has in the last two decades come into its own as a vital contributor to the fortunes of electronic, automotive, chemical and aerospace firms. In terms of money and talent poured into research, the mining industry is still far behind those industries. Although the U.S. Bureau of Mines, plus various mining and manufacturing firms and universities have made notable contributions to mining technology, the historical pattern of mining R&D shows a heavy reliance on the results of research in other industries. It is difficult to tell whether this pattern will change significantly in the future, but there is evidence of a growing awareness by mining officials that greater R&D efforts are going to be required not only to meet the nebulous demands of tomorrow's world but to meet the ever-present, mounting pressures being generated by "intra-metals" and "inter-materials" competition.

INTRODUCTION. A LARGE number of papers and reports dealing with the coalfields of Montana have been published + during the last 30 years, but the information is much scattered, appearing in many technical and scientific journals and in government reports, in many cases inaccessible to those most interested. In recent years, especially since 1905, ,our knowledge of the geology and coal contents of the important fields of the State has been much increased. Fairly specific and detailed information is. at hand on all of the principal coal-bearing areas. The fields for which data are not at hand are small and inaccessible, and their omission will not materially affect an estimate of the coal resources of the State, viewed as a whole. The paper here presented is a summary of existing information, all sources having been freely utilized in its preparation. The viewpoint adopted is that of the geologist, rather than that of the engineer or colliery operator, because by far the greater portion of the coal areas present have had only the most meager development, making information that, will aid in prospecting and opening the at present little used coal lands of paramount importance to those interested in the coal fields of the State.

General expressions are given to describe macro-segregation in castings and ingots which results from mass flow of solute-rich liquid to feed solidification and thermal contractions. Analytical solutions are given for solidification with planar isotherms (unidirectional and bidirectional heat flow). These solutions describe inverse segregation and centerline segregation. Numerical examples are given for A1-4.5 pct Cu alloy. In 1540, Vannoccio Biringuccio published one of the first references to macrosegregation, describing the problem of exudation and inverse segregation in the manufacture of bronze gun barrels.' Since then, a great many studies of macrosegregation have been reported. Recent work of particular engineering interest includes that of Marburg 2 and others:" on centerline segregation and other types of segregation in large steel ingots, and work of Adams,5 Scheil, 6 and Kirkaldy and youdelis7 on inverse segregation in nonferrous ingots. In most studies on this subject, the various types of macrosegregation have been treated as separate phenomena. For example, quite different mechanisms have been proposed for formation of centerline segregation, negative cone of segregation, inverse segregation, banding, and so forth. In this, and in several papers to follow, it is proposed that these as well as other types of macrosegregation result from the same basic mechanism and can be quantitatively described by the same basic equation. It has often been suggested that some types of segregation (such as centerline segregation and banding) occur as a result of buildup of solute at the tips of growing dendrites.2-4 ,8-10 As example, banding can be induced in centrifugal castings by mechanical vibration, and Northcott 10 suggests this might be due to the influence of the vibration on the boundary layer at the dendrite tips of the growing dendrites. However, in view of the extremely small boundary layer known to exist at the tips of the dendrites,11,12 any interpretation of macrosegregation based on this boundary layer is clearly incorrect. Note that experiment has shown that significant buildup of solute does not occur at dendrite tips in ingot solidification, but even if such buildup occurred the thickness of the enriched zone would only be the order of D/U where D is liquid diffusion coefficient and U is dendrite tip velocity. For usual casting or ingot solidification this solute-enriched layer is 10"3 cm, far too small to account, for example, for centerline segregation.11'12 It has also been suggested that convection in the bulk liquid (ahead of the advancing dendrites) might cause segregation by sweeping away the solute-rich boundary layer in front of the dendrites.3 However, since there is no significant boundary layer, this explanation must be incorrect. The convection might directly cause segregation by penetrating between the dendrite arms, and presumably in a rimming steel ingot it is sufficiently vigorous to cause some segregation in this way. Centerline segregation, however, cannot be interpreted as resulting from this convection since a sharply segregated zone is usually found near the centerline, with the bulk of the ingot being nearly of nominal composition. If convection in the bulk liquid were the direct cause, a gradual change in ingot composition over the entire cross section would be expected. It is known that sudden changes in convection of the bulk liquid during solidification can result in banding,14 but it is not clear that the banding results directly from the effect of convection on solute distribution. Changes in convection also affect thermal conditions in the liquid-solid region of a solidifying ingot. It will be seen later in this paper, and in a paper to follow, that macrosegregation is strongly influenced by these thermal changes. Recognizing that in some cases of ingot solidification (as in solidification of rimming steels) convection in the bulk liquid may have a direct effect on solute distribution, we neglect it in this paper and in the several to follow. It is twenty years since the writer made his first molybdenum steels and others were making them commercially five years earlier but the prevailing opinion seems to be that molybdenum steels are new; from time to time the daily press speaks of important discoveries in Europe and intimates that American steel makers have much to learn in regard to alloy steels. The earlier experiments were largely confined to the use of relatively high percentages of molybdenum in tool steels and permanent magnet steels. Recent developments deal with the types of alloy structural steels used for airplane, automobile, and other engineering requirements; in these, the molybdenum content is usually less than 1 per cent. The earlier types generally have been unsuccessful commercially, but the newer types of steels are becoming of increasing importance. The war showed our dependence on foreign sources for alloying metals; molybdenum alone is widely distributed in the United States and seemingly abundant. Many deposits are not now of commercial interest, owing to location and relatively small amount of ore available, but other deposits are being developed and a stable source of supply seems well assured. In tool and magnet steels, it was early found that 1 part of molybdenum was equivalent to from 2 to 2.5 parts of tungsten. The permanent magnet steels investigated by Madame Curie,' in 1898, contained from 3.36 to 4.05 per cent. molybdenum; in 1902, Dr. E. L. French and the writer thoroughly tested steels containing from 2.0 to 4.0 per cent. These steels gave satisfactory tests for permanence, but were low in residual density and much more sensitive to hardening than the corresponding tungsten products. We discontinued work with them, therefore, and have no advice that such steels have been used commercially here or abroad. Prior to the development of the Taylor-White process and the modern high-speed steels, air-hardening steels were in general use. These were

This study was undertaken primarily to determine the reasons for certain variations in the soundness of gravel aggregate taken from a number of widely separated points on the Tennessee River. Under laboratory tests, concrete made with these various aggregates in some cases exhibited marked differences in specific gravity. crushing strength and durability. Gravel was studied in detail from Chattanooga to the mouth of the river and to a lesser extent from Chattanooga to Knoxville. The causes of variation were determined, and variational curves were constructed, which accurately predict the composition of aggregate at any point on the river and therefore its relative suitability for use in concrete. The aggregate at any point is suited for making sound concrete; the variance of suitability is due to varying percentages of sandstone and weathered material, which are less sound than other constituents. Introduction When it is stated that the aggregate from one point is inferior to that from another, it must not be construed to mean that the gravel is unfit for use. The classification upon which such aggregate ratings are based is largely arbitrary, thus inferiority or superiority is merely relative. Samples of gravel were selected from stockpiles at the dams of the Tennessee Valley Authority under construction, from the stockpiles of private companies along the river, and from samples taken by the gravel-exploration barge of the T. V. A. One hundred or more gravels of each size studied were selected at random by taking small handfuls while walking around the piles. These were separated according to the different mineral or rock constituents present, and the percentage of each constituent was obtained by counting. At least three such samples were taken from each size, and all checked with one another within a few per cent. The results were then averaged. In order to check on the accuracy of such sampling, a whole sample was taken from one point after the gravel was thoroughly mixed. The two methods gave approximately identical results.
