No appreciable stabilization of the austenite-martensite reaction occurs in a 15 pct Cr-0.7 pct C steel unless some martensite is initially present. Stabilization is induced by interrupting the subcool below M,; however, disappearance of the stabilization effect as manifest by burst formation of martensite may occur on continued holding at the final subzero reaction temperature. The higher the temperature of intermediate cycling after the initial subcool, the more permanent is the stabilization effect at the final reaction temperature. Appreciable conditioning of retained austenite occurs on reheating to about 500°C. These phenomena are explainable on the basis of the reaction-path theory. A RECENT investigation' carried out by the authors has shown that isothermal transformation of austenite to martensite definitely takes place in a 15 pct Cr-0.7 pct C steel and that appreciable amounts of martensite can form in this fashion. Investigations2-" arried out on other steels and iron alloys make it seem probable that isothermal formation of martensite is a phenomenon of fairly general occurrence. The reaction-path theory of Cohen, Machlin, and Paranjpe5,7 explains isothermal transformation on the basis of thermal activation of strain embryos which generate martensite plates with a velocity approaching that of sound. On the other hand, the nucleation and growth theory of Fisher, Hollo-mon, and Turnbull8 egards isothermal transformation as due to growth of athermally formed martensite nuclei. The experimental evidence obtained thus far favors the reaction-path theory in that the martensite reaction seems to be nu-cleation-controlled rather than growth-controlled. Stabilization is another phenomenon of importance with respect to the austenite-martensite reaction. According to the reaction-path theory, stabilization is a result of relaxation of strain embryos. It is postulated that strain embryos are present at the austenitizing temperature in the form of dislocations or lattice imperfections in the austenite which vary in the extent to which the lattice is displaced along the strain reaction path leading to martensite. On quenching from the austenitizing temperature, athermal martensite starts to form as soon as the M. is reached, because the activation energy of the transformation which decreases with decreasing temperature is lowered to below the level of the highest energy strain embryos. Martensite plates are generated during the cooling below M, from embryos possessing energies above the activation energy corresponding to the temperature at which the cooling is stopped. The distribution of lower energy embryos is changed because of the elastic and plastic strains produced in the remaining austenite as a result of the transformation. This effectively increases the number of strain embryos at all levels of energy below the activation energy and tends to stimulate further martensite formation either iso-thermally or on subsequent cooling. However, if the temperature at which the cooling is stopped is high enough for relaxation of strain embryos to occur, some degree of stabilization against further transformation may be induced. Whether stabilization will be observed on subsequent cooling will depend on the extent of decrease of activation energy with temperature. If the activation energy decreases sharply with temperature, it is possible that transformation will appear to continue with decrease in temperature in spite of the loss of embryos by relaxation. However, with a more gradual decrease in activation energy, stabilization will be manifest by no further transformation on cooling over a measurable temperature range until the

Located in virgin coal acreage near Gilbert, W. Va., Massey Coal Mining Co.'s Ben Creek No. 2 mine afforded the company's engineers the opportunity of designing and laying out the entire mining operation from the mine faces to the railroading loading site. However, the topography of this region posed difficult problems in haulage of coal for, in this extremely rugged terrain the uppermost coal seams lay in the mountain-top ridges, approximately 1400 ft above the valley floor. The decision for mining equipment naturally leaned to the new high-capacity continuous miners where seam conditions permitted: otherwise, to the new super-high capacity conventional cutting and loading machines. Since the coal seams lay in ridges and points of considerable outcropping, the decision was to keep the transportation on the surface and mine the coal with multiple entries into the outcrop. This way, the major problems of underground haulage, drainage, and ventilation are eliminated, and the opportunity to take advantage of a-c underground power becomes a much simpler proposition.

THE THIRD and most important item on the Phelps Dodge agenda for the development of new ore supplies involved the site of the company's initial venture into Arizona, the old mining camp of Morenci. By the purchase of the Arizona Copper Company's holdings in 1921, Phelps Dodge had obtained control of virtually the entire Morenci district, including town, public utilities, and, above all, the huge mineralized area that had once been divided between numerous competing companies. Because of this rigid concentration of ownership in the hands of one organization, Phelps Dodge was able to plan and successfully carry out a program of greater magnitude than any Arizona mining company had previously under- taken. The immense deposit of low-grade ore, usually referred to as the Clay Orebody, had been known to the mining companies of Morenci for many years. Pioneer exploratory work, both by the Arizona Copper Company and later by Phelps Dodge, revealed that the deposit, mostly of light-gray porphyry rock, lay under a hard capping from two hundred to five hundred feet thick. Through close cooperation with geophysical and geological test work by Texas Gulf Sulphur Co. in Beaufort County, the Asheville Minerals Research Laboratory assisted in the evaluation of North Carolina's most valuable mineral resource, the Pungo River phosphate deposit. After a core evaluation study, the flotation process for the concentration of North Carolina phosphate was demonstrated in a 500-lb per hr pilot plant in Asheville. Tonnage samples of phosphate concentrate were produced for customer evaluation in the United States, Europe, and the Far East. Plans for a larger pilot plant to be erected at the plant site at Lee Creek were prepared for TGS. The larger pilot plant was operated by TGS in conjunction with a test dredging operation which led to the adoption of a dragline dry mining method to move 90,000 tpd of material for the production of 10,000 tpd of phosphate concentrate in the all-flotation phosphate concentrator. Calcining, dry grinding, and byproduct studies complimented the construction of one of the world's largest and most modern fertilizer raw-feed complexes on the eastern North Carolina seaboard.

Under the auspices of the Atomic Energy Commission, the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory of the University of California analyzed an experiment to provide information as to whether the chimney of broken rock produced by a deeply buried nuclear explosive could be "drawn" by conventional techniques. Since many low-grade disseminated ore-bodies occur in a granite media, the experiment took place in a granodiorite-quartz monzonite intrusive porphyry in the Nevada Test Site as a follow-up to the Department of Defense's Hardhat detonation in February 1962. For emplacement of the nuclear device, a 12 ¼ - in. pilot hole was reamed to a diameter of 44 in. and a depth of 950 ft in one pass using a Hughes multiple-cluster rotary bit. It was then cased to 36 in. ID. The center of the explosive device was located 938.85 ft below the collar. The yield of the device was predicted to be 5 kilotons, or an equivalent of 5000 tons of TNT; the yield was later confirmed by chemical means to be 5.4 kilotons.

Electrical resistivities 01 liquid Cd-Bi, Cd-Sn, Cd-Pb, In-Bi, and Sn-Bi alloys were measured using an electrodeless technique. The resistivities ranged from 50 to 160 microhm -cm, temperature dependences were positive, and no sharp peaks in the composition dependence of the resistivity were observed. On the basis of these observations, it was concluded that the alloys are typical metallic liquids. The electron con-cent9,ation was calculated from the measured resis-tizlity and available thermodynamic data using a model which attributes electrical resistivity to scattering by density and composition flzcctuations. A correla-tion was shown between the departure of the electron concentration from a linear combination of the pure component valences and the value of the excess integral molar free energy. Calculation of the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity showed a need for more detailed thermodynamic data in these systems and led to suggestions for improvement in the concept of residual resistivity in the fluctuation scattering model. THE electrical resistivity of liquid metals provides information regarding interatomic interactions and their effects upon structure. In this experiment an electrodeless technique was used to measure the electrical resistivities of liquid alloys of Cd-Bi, Cd-Sn, Cd-Pb, In-Bi, and Sn-Bi, and the results were used with thermodynamic data to calculate a parameter which reflects the tendency toward localization of electrons due to compositional ordering. It was found that the resistivities of these alloys are generally metallic in magnitude and temperature dependence. The electrical and thermodynamic properties are discussed in terms of the fluctuation scattering model'22 which supposes that the electrical resistivity arises from scattering due to a static average structure and departures from the average due to fluctuations in density and composition. Further, this model is compared with the pseudopotential scattering model of Ziman et al.3-5 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Alloy samples were prepared from 99.999 pct pure elements obtained from American Smelting and Refining Company (except tin which was obtained from Consolidated Smelting and Refining Company.) The resistivity of a liquid alloy was measured by placing the sample inside a solenoid and noting the change in Q. According to the method of Nyburg and ~ur~ess,~ the resistivity of a cylindrical sample may be determined from the change in resistance of a solenoid measured with a Q meter as T7--5--W =R7JT^ ='Kc-lm(Y) [1] where L, R, and Q = wL/R are the inductance, series resistance, and Q of the solenoid. The subscript s refers to the solenoid with the sample inside; the subscript 0 refers to the empty solenoid. Kc is the ratio of the sample volume to coil volume and y = 2 [bei'0(br)-j ber'o(br)~\ br\_bero(br) +j bei0 (br) expressed with Kelvin functions which are the real and imaginary parts of Bessel functions of the first kind with arguments multiplied by (j)3'2. The argument of the function Y is hr where r is the sample radius and b2 = po~/p, i.e., the permeability of free space times 271 times the frequency divided by the resistivity in rationalized MKS units. Since Eq. [I] cannot be solved explicitly for p, values of Kc. lm(Y) were tabulated at increments of 0.1 in the argument by. A measurement of Q, and Q, determined a value of Kc . lm (Y) and the corresponding value of br could be read from the table. From the known r, uo,, and w, the resistivity, p, was determined. The change in Q was measured after letting the encapsulated Sample reach equilibrium inside a copper wire solenoid. The solenoid was contained in an evacuated vycor tube in order to retard oxidation of the copper while operating at high temperatures and heated inside a 5-sec-tion nichrome tube furnace capable of obtaining 900°C. Temperature was determined with two chromel-alumel thermocouples, one in contact with the solenoid 30 mm above the top of the sample and the other inserted in an axial well at the other end of the solenoid and secured with cement so that the junction was 2 mm below the bottom of the sample. Temperature readings were taken with respect to an ice water bath junction, and the voltage could be estimated to the nearest thousandth of a millivolt. The lower thermocouple was calibrated by observing its voltage and the Q of the coil as the temperature passed through the melting points of samples of indium and tellurium. The upper thermocouple reading was systematically different from the lower thermocouple reflecting the temperature difference due to a displacement of 60 mm axially and 6 mm radially. Exploratory drilling in South Central Texas for the year 1944 showed a marked increase over that of 1943 and resulted in a similar increase in new fields discovered. In this area, which comprises the 30 counties included in district No. I, Oil and Gas Division, Railroad Commission of Texas,? 61 exploratory wells were drilled during 1944 as compared with 29 exploratory wells drilled during 1943, or an increase of over 100 per cent. Three new oil fields, two new gas fields and one gas-distillate field were discovered during the year, as compared with one new oil field and one new gas field discovered during 1943. These new fields were the result of exploratory drilling throughout the district along the Wilcox trend and the deeper Edwards lime trend, which was started during the previous year. The Wilcox trend yielded the new Loma iilta-Wilcox oil field and the San Caja gas-* tlistillate field, both in McMullen County. The Charlotte field, in Atascosa County, was discovered along the deeper Edwards lime trend. These three discoveries were of considerable importance and subsequent development should indicate the desirability of continued exploration along these trends. The other three discoveries, United oil field in Guadalupe County, Pederson gas field in Milam County and Van Cleve gas field in Zavalla County, were of minor importance. Charlotte Field, Atascosa County, was discovered by the Humble Oil and Refining Company's No. 3 Pruitt, completcd on Aug. 9, 1944, flowing 176 bbl. per day, 3/16-in. choke, 710 lb. tubing, 475 lb. casing pressures, 37.7º A.P.I. gravity, from the top of the Edwards lime from 6917 to 6923 ft. Two oil wells were completed during the year in this field. This discovery is 14 miles southwest of the same company's Imogene field, also producing from the Edwards lime but with considerable difference in reservoir characteristics. The discovery of this field is the result of surface geology and subsequent seismograph survey of the area. Loma Alta-Wilcox Field, McMullen County, was discovered by the Atlantic Refining Company's No. I Atkinson, completed on June I, 1944, flowing 102 bbl. per day, 9/64-in. choke, 1900 lb. tubing pressure, 37º A.P.I. gravity, from Wilcox sand from 6866 to 6869 ft. after being drilled to a total depth of 7185 ft. This discovery is the result of subsurface geology and an extensive seismograph survey of the entire area. Sun Caja Field, McMullen County, was discovered by Edwin M. Jones No. 2-C Ezzell, completed on June 2, 1944 as a dual completion in the Wilcox sands, flowing 1,740,000 cu. ft. gas with 53 bbl. distillate, 1/4-in. choke, 2035 lb. tubing pressure, 53.2º A.P.I. gravity, from sand 6416 to 6453 ft. and flowing 2,000,000 cu. ft. of gas with 127 bbl. distillate, 1/4-in. choke, 2500 lb. tubing pressure, 50º A.P.I. gravity, from sand 6889 to 6916 ft., after being drilled to a total depth of 7264 ft. It is seldom the privilege of one who contributes to the Transactions of a technical society, to describe a new industry in which, by processes employed for the first time, are attained results of conspicuous value. There are but few such patches of virgin soil worth the tilling, within the area circumscribed by the industries which have experienced a regular and uniform development. New and startling methods in production are often announced as about to be introduced; but, as a rule, they take their place among the " large desires with most uncertain issues," or give new significance to the historic words of an eminent statesman concerning " the bright beginnings and the bitter end of a halcyon and vociferous proceeding." In this paper I shall have the pleasure of briefly describing a new industry which has been established without announcement or proclamation — the manufacture of serviceable pressure pipes of great strength, from strips of steel or iron wound spirally, heated only along the overlapping edges, welded by hammering and finished into tubes of uniform diameter, and of such length as mag be found convenient in handling and transportation. As such tubes are now manufactured on a considerable scale, in a range of sizes which will soon include everything between 4 inches and 30 inches, and as much larger as may be needed, both process and product are likely to be of interest to engineers in all departments of professional work. The raw material of the industry is the ordinary sheet-iron or steel of commerce, of such lengths and widths as it is convenient to roll. The range of the ganges of the metal which can be employed has riot yet been determined. The lightest metal thus far successfully made into pipe is No. 29 iron, and the heaviest a steel gauging somewhere between 12 and 14. Heavier machines are now building which will bend steel .165 of an inch in thickness, or No. 8 of' the Birmingham gauge. Probably No. 20 or No. 22 will be the lightest used in making commercial pipes; hut the experiment with No. 29 was interesting as showing the readiness with which the flame can be controlled. Recent experimental work has demonstrated (1)2 that ammonia and oxides of nitrogen are formed during the aging of smokeless powder. This is significant in connection with the problem of "season cracking," or stress corrosion of brass cartridge cases in view of other work(1) indicating that stressed and "stress- relieved" cases stored with small quantities of added ammonium nitrate crack on firing. The deterioration of stressed brass by ammonia has been known for some time(z) and it appears therefore that stress- corrosion cracking of brass cartridge cases is intimately associated with the so-called "powder volatiles," ammonia and oxides of nitrogen, both of which are decomposition products of smokeless powder. Working on the hypothesis that any barrier which prevents the powder volatiles from reaching the brass surface will reduce the incidence of stress-corrosion cracking, it was considered desirable to investigate the use of organic resin films to accomplish this purpose. The possibility of formation of ammonia within the nitrocellulose powder charge and by reduction of nitrogen oxides on the surface of the brass case requires that the barrier film be resistant both to ammonia and oxides of nitrogen. The Birdwell 3-D Velocity Log displays photographically the amplitude of elastic waves as a function of time and of the depth of the logging tool in a borehole. The elastic waves are generated by a magneto-strictive source transducer and detected by a receiving transducer, which is at a fixed distance from the source. The output of the receiver, which is proportional to the amplitude of the received elastic waves, modulates the light that exposes the film record. The duration of the receiving time can be selected to record the entire wavetrain of late events or to record only early events at a finer time scale. When a full complement of elastic waves (i.e., the refracted compressional wave, composite shear wave, direct fluid wave, and boundary wave) is recorded, their velocities and the density of the borehole fluid provide the information necessary to compute the elastic moduli and density of the rock surrounding the bore-hole. The differences between the values of the moduli determined from measurements of 3-D Velocity Logs and by other better known techniques are small, well within the limits of experimental error, when the velocity log is interpreted by an experienced seismic analyst. The occurrence of outcrops of bituminous schists and sandstones impregnated with heavy asphaltie petroleum first directed attention to the São Pedro area as a possible source of commercial production of petroleum. Since 1920, more than 20 wells have been drilled in this area. The discovery of oil shows and small quantities of natural gas in some of the early wells led to the continuation of drilling in the hope that more important findings would result. During the early part of 1934, detailed magnetometer observations were made in this area, and a considerable number of torsion balance stations were occupied. The results of these geophysical observations help considerably to clarify the structure of the area and the very considerable amount of geologic information available makes possible a much more exact interpretation of geophysical anomalies. In presenting the results of these observations, and interpretation of the geophysical data, certain actual case problems are included; i.e., geophysical anomalies due to anomalous masses of which the forms and positions are more or less known. Although anomalies due to igneous intrusions are probably more important to geophysicists in Brazil than in other countries, these data have a certain interest for all geophysicists, particularly because they were obtained in the south magnetic hemisphere, where the lines of magnetic force are directed upward, and in a region of moderately low inclination. This is considered as a geological-geophysical problem, and only passing mention will be given to the petroleum possibilities of the area. In the combination induction-electrical log used at present in the field, the induction logging tool is appropriate for the investigation of moderately invaded formations. A new induction sonde with a radius and investigation about twice as large has been developed recently for the case of deep invasion. It has very nearly the same vertical resolution as the present sonde so that thin beds are defined as accurately as before. The characteristics of the new tool are described, the corresponding interpretation charts are given and field examples are discussed. The design of the sonic logging tool has been modified to improve the calibration and the reliability. The fact that porosity can be accurately recorded by means of the sonic log has prompted new interpretation procedures for saturation estimation, wherein the data concerning the various permeable beds in a given well are correlated. One approach consists of plotting transit time vs true resistivity, with an appropriate scale. With this approach, saturations can be estimated conveniently even in cases where formation water resistivity is not well known. In another approach, a comparison is made of the values of the formation waters computed from the re- sistivity and sonic logs. Using the concept of continuity, this procedure makes possible a quick determination of zones of saturation in shaly sands and/or in case of appreciable variations of formation salinities with depth. It has been found that the comparison of porosity from the sonic log with the apparent porosity computed from a short-investigation resistivity log may reveal, in many cases, the presence of residual oil and thus detect potentially productive formations; this procedure is valuable when the true formation resistivity and the resistivity of the formation water are in doubt. INTRODUCTION During the past year, the efficiency of log interpretation has been vastly improved. The improvements have largely resulted from the introduction of a deep-investigation induction device and from the application of new interpretation techniques that utilize sonic vs resistivity readings. Since the new interpretation techniques depend, in part, upon good values of true formation resistivity, the new induction log will be discussed under Part I. The sonic interpretation techniques will be studied under Part 11. Early in 1959, the 6FF40 induction equipment was introduced in the field. This device was designed for a better approach to true formation resistivities in deeply invaded zones. The greatly improved radial investigation of the 6FF40 equipment has been achieved without sacrificing vertical resolution. The first combination induction-electrical log, the 5FF40, was introduced as a standard tool in 1956 for the logging of wells drilled with fresh muds. The tool has received wide industry acceptance in the United States. 'The 5FF40 induction log has a radial investigation sufficient to overcome average depths of mud filtrate invasion. At 5d invasion, for example, the 5FF40 induction log will read about 1.4 R. in a water sand where R., = 10R,. At 10d invasion, such induction log would read 2.45 R. in the same water sand. In either case, the effects of invasion would not be sufficiently great to cause a water sand to be mistaken for a shale-free oil- or gas-producing zone. Some formations, however, invade deeply — in excess of 10d. Such water zones could be mistaken for oil-or gas-saturated sands unless the porosity balance' can clearly make the distinction. It is for these deeply invaded formations that the 6FF40 was developed. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE 6FF40 Radial Investigation Characteristics To describe the comparative responses of the 5FF40

The adaptation of European methods of concentrating ores to suit the conditions of this country has followed the lines that simplify machinery, diminish labor and increase capacity. Noteworthy instances are the substitution of hydraulic classifiers for the last one or two trommels in the series, and the substitution of a distributing-tank for the slimes in the place of the Spitzkasten. The question may be fairly asked, At what point do losses become serious in consequence of these changes? It is to study this question that the investigation herein described has been undertaken. After the losses are located and the methods of stopping them are pointed out, it will then lie with the individual mill to decide whether or not the plans proposed will save suficient value to warrant their adoption. In the discussion of sorting followed by sizing, as the terms are used in this paper, me have to deal with the preparation of slimes by the Spitzkasten for subsequent washing upon the slime-table. The Spitzkasten, or pointed box, is an inverted hollow pyramid, generally of wood, usually with four faces or sides coming together in a point below. The sides can have, according to Rittinger, a minimum angle of slope of 50" with the horizontal. The feed-water carrying fine slimes (less than 0.01 inch, or 0.25 mm. in diameter) for treatment is fed at one end and carefully distributed over the whole width. The outlet is over the opposite end. NO important discoveries of petroleum during 1932 are reported from Canada. New Brunswick, which has a small production from one field, was inactive, and the production showed a decline from 6600 bbl. in 1931 to about 6300 bbl. for the year 1932. The old fields in Ontario increased from 123,000 to about 131,000 bbl. Alberta showed a decline of more than one-third, from 1,413,631 bbl. in 1931 to about 913,000 bbl. in 1932. This decline was due principally to the restrictions placed on the flow of gas wells in the Turner Valley field, from which the crude naphtha is obtained that accounted for more than 93 per cent of the production of Alberta and for more than 80 per cent of the production of all Canada in 1932. The starting of new wells to the limestone that produces the naphtha-bearing gas was prohibited late in 1931, and only wells started before that time were finished during 1932. One well was drilled in the Turner Valley field to a depth of 7555 ft., establishing a depth record for Canada. It passed out of the Madison limestone at 5560 ft., and encountered showings of oil in the underlying formations, probably of Devonian age. Commercial production had not been established by the end of the year. Commercial oil wells were brought in in two areas in Ontario which had previously been considered as productive of gas only— in the Dawn gas field, Lambton County, and in Raleigh Township, Kent County. The discovery wells had initial productions of about 50 bbl. per day, but no production of major importance is indicated. In Alberta, outside the Turner Valley district, two wildcats were drilled northwest. of Lethbridge in the Keho Lake vicinity. Both failed to make commercial producers in the Madison limestone, but one was testing upper sands at the close of the year. Good showings of oil are reported. A very small production was found in the Madison limestone in a wildcat well on the Twin River structure southeast of Lethbridge and another well has been started near by on what is considered on geophysical evidence to be a better location structurally. About 15 locations were made on the Canadian side of the border north of the Cut Bank development in Montana.

INTRODUCTION Though the use of continuous mining machines consolidated the operations of cutting, drilling, blasting, and loading in one machine that would theoretically provide uninterrupted production, it was soon realized that the face haulage and roof support operations remained as major impediments to continuous production. The ability to provide not only continuous cutting and loading, but also continuous haulage and roof support (see Fig. I), was the basis for the introduction of mechanized longwall systems in this country from Europe in 1951. The early systems employed friction props for roof support, but were to become obsolete shortly after introduction of the first hydraulically powered, self-advancing supports in 1960. Since then, use of the longwall technique has grown to the point where it is currently providing more than 5% of the annual output of underground coal mines in the United States. The shortwall system had its origin in Australia, but was first introduced into this country in 1962 following the development of powered roof supports. It, too, provides for continuous cutting, loading, and roof support (see Fig. 2), but has not experienced the widespread popularity of longwall due to its inherent inability to easily provide for continuous haulage. While there are in the neighborhood of 100 longwall systems currently in operation in this country, there are only a handful of short- wall operations providing production of slightly more than 907 184.7 t/a (1,000,000 stpy) Both of these systems provide uninterrupted roof support for face operations by means of hydraulically powered steel roof supports. In each case, the coal removal consists of open-end cuts made from the narrow end of a large rectangular pillar (panel) which has been blocked out by continuous miners developing entries around its perimeter. OF the current Adirondack iron mine development, the Benson Mines operation of the Tones and Laughlin Ore Co. (Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp. wholly owned subsidiary) is the last to go into operation. Following an active construction program in 1943, the mine. concentrator and sintering plant were scheduled to enter production in the fall. This description therefore cannot include any operating data, and details of equipment and flowsheet have not as yet been released.

The term lightweight aggregate implies material which may be substituted for the usual rock, sand and gravel commonly used as the major part of concrete, but distinguished by being much lighter in weight. Background The art of making and using concrete is old and well developed. Research and experience have pretty well determined the qualities necessary in its constituents, and time has tested theories and applications. Elaborate specifications and tests have been devised and generally adopted governing all phases of concrete work, from selection of material, through engineering design and down to mixing and placing. Standard practices have become routine to executives and laborers, and operations have been simplified and costs lowered. Though many lightweight aggregates meet the basic specifications necessary for usefulness, their physical qualities are so different that they fiequently will not pass standard tests, and some of them cannot be mixed and placed with the usual formulas for water and slump. As a rule their use produces a concrete with a lower modulus of elasticity which requires design change, and being produced in much smaller quantities than ordinary aggregate, production costs are higher. This latter works in a vicious circle to restrict their use and maintain prices that are not competitive, except as against each other. Increased Demand In spite of such handicaps consumption has grown steadily for the past two decades and is apparently growing even faster today. It is evident that lightweight concrete must have better qualities, and be sufficiently better to Overcome the higher cost and the other difficulties and disadvantages pertinent to the use of a new and different material in an old industry. Hence the study of its main ingredient should be of interest to all engineers. Our group has a double interest in the subject since most of the materials which have been used as sources of lightweight aggregate are either mined, Or are by-products of mining operations. We are directly interested in their production as well as their use, and since available supplies of materials suitable are limited, the increasing use, and rising demand, make the discovery of new Or or the development of processes to adapt other natural materials to this use, a promising field; and one in which our profession should take an active part. Recent Development Descriptions of ancient work contain references to the use of spalls of tuffs Or pumice in concrete masonry, but it is only since the nineteen twenties that serious attempts have been made to produce and market lightweight aggregates. NAME AND OBJECT. SEC. 1. This Institute is incorporated under the Membership Corporations law of the State of New York ; its corporate name is American Institute of Mining Engineers; and its objects are such as are stated in its Certificate of Incorporation. ARTICLE II. MEMBERS. SEC. 1. The membership of the Institute shall comprise four classes, namely 1. Members ; 2. Honorary Members ; 3. Associates ; 4. Junior Members. All members shall be equally entitled to the privileges of membership, except¬ing that Honorary Members, Junior Members, and Members and Associates whose residences shall be outside of the United States, Mexico, and Canada shall not be entitled to vote. Members and Associates residing within the United States of America, Mexico, and Canada, and not in arrears for dues, shall be entitled to vote in person at the meetings of the Institute, or, as hereinafter provided for, by letter ballot. SEC. 2. The following classes of persons shall be eligible for membership in the Institute, namely : as Members, all professional mining . engineers, geologists, metallurgists, or chemists, and all persons actively engaged in mining and metallurgical engineering, geology, or chemistry ; as Associates, all persons desirous of being connected with the Institute who in the opinion of the Board of Directors are suitable.
