For something over two years past a new development of the open-hearth process has been in operation at the works of the Prager Eisenindustrie-Gesellschuft at Eladno, in Bohemia. It was devised and perfected by Mr. Ernst Bertrand, general superintendent,, and Mr. Otto Thiel, steel-works superintendent. The results which the inventors wished to obtain were to increase the product per furnace, to reduce the amount of refractories and additions used, to enable a poorer and more varied quality of stock to be employed, to improve the quality of the material produced and to render the control of the operations and product more certain. In all of these objects they have been successful, and have thereby considerably reduced the cost of manufacture and increased the value of the finished material. The Plant. The plant at Kladno consists of one 12-ton and one 20-ton furnace. Through an incident of construction the smaller furnace stands some distance behind and to one side of the larger furnace, and at a height of about 10 feet above it. The furnaces are in the same building as the Bessemer converters, and the metal is handled in the same casting-house by means of a locomobile ladle-crane. The relative position of the furnaces suggested the experiments by which the process was developed, and also enabled it to be thoroughly tested. Much valuable and practical work has been done in this plant, although it is not as convenient and suitable as one especially designed for the process would be. A MAJOR difficulty in the experimental study of precipitation-hardening is the measurement of particle sizes too small to be easily resolved with the microscope. It has been shown recently, however, that magnetic measurements on copper-cobalt al- loys in the aged state can be used to determine the average volume, total volume, volume distribution, and shape of the ferromagnetic cobalt-rich particles, even though the particles are submicroscopic in size. r' These alloys also are known to exhibit considerable precipitation hardening. This paper reports some results on the dependence of the mechanical properties of such an alloy on the particle size, determined magnetically. It further illustrates the use of other magnetic measurements in interpreting structure changes occurring during deformation.

Two great discoveries of this century have diminished the dangers of fiery coal-mines,—the sifety-lamp, conceived in 1815 by Sir Humphrey Davy and successively improved by many engineers, such as Clanny, Marsaut, Mueseler, Fumat, etc., and safety-explosives, the appearance of which is comparatively recent, hut which, thanks to the persevering labors of several technical commissions (especially the French commission on explosives), and of the manufacturers and experimental users of these powders, appear likely to play, in the protection of the miner, a part as important as that of the safetylamp itself. Brit while it is true that by the use of a safety-lamp of approved form, and the exclusive employment, with all prescribed precautions, of these new explosives, complete security should be assured, even in highly fiery atmospheres, experience has shown that the imprudence of workmen, or the bad condition of a lamp, may nullify these protective means, so that it ought to be the constant care of the engineers of fiery mines to dilute the fire-damp by good ventilation so far as to maintain always and in all parts of a mine a proportion of this gas below the lower limit of explosiveness belonging to a mixture of air and methane. Good ventilation still remains the best preventive of explosions from fire-damp, and since, even with a rational and well-controlled mine-ventilation, the volumes of air traversing galleries and rooms are liable to vary within wide limits by reason of open doors, falls of rock, or other accidental causes, it follows that but a few thousandths of fire-damp should be left in the normal atmosphere of the mine-workings, so that a considerable

ALTHOUGH the committee appointed by the President of the American Iron and Steel Insti-tute, to consider the twelve-hour day work in the steel industry and report conclusions and recommenda-tions, has made a very careful and painstaking study of the facts and figures developed, it is not yet ready to make what it would designate a final report. Apparently the underlying reason for the agitation which resulted in the appointment of this committee was based on a sentiment (not created or endorsed by the workmen themselves) that 'the twelve-hour day was an unreasonable hardship upon the employees who were connected with it; that it was physically injurious to a large percentage of the employes; and that it interfered with family associations essential to the welfare of the children; that for these reasons it was, in a sense, opposed to the public interest. TWELVE-HOUR DAY NOT NECESSARILY INJURIOUS Whatever will be said against the twelve-hour day in the steel industry, investigation has convinced this committee that the same has not of itself been an injury to the employes, physically, mentally or morally. Whether or not, in the large majority of cases, twelve-hour men devote less time to their families than the employes working fewer hours is perhaps questionable. A part of the manufacturing of iron and steel is necessarily continuous. Therefore, practically, there must be two shifts of twelve hours or three shifts of eight hours. The workmen, as a rule, preferr the longer hours because it permits larger compensation per day. It is asserted with confidence that there is less phys-ical work, as a total per day, and less fatigue from the work of the twelve-hour day in the steel industry, than pertains to the large majority of the eight-hour men. This is because in the former case there are more rest periods during the twelve hours on duty.

The rapidly increasing use in coal mines of portable auxiliary fans, which are generally 'blowers" employed in connection with canvas tubing, raises questions concerning the hazards of such equipment, especially where the practices are opposed to established methods of ventilating face workings. Half a dozen or more coal-mine explosions and some fires have been attributed to the use of auxiliary fans; moreover, competent mining engineers have found many dangerous installations and methods of use-for example, intermittent running of the fans in gassy mines with consequent accumulations of firedamp at the faces. These facts have led the U. S. Bureau of Mines to issue this recommendation: "In the interest of safety, the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, recommends that auxiliary fans or blowers should not be used in coal mines as a substitute for methods of regular and continuous coursing of the air to every face in the mine." The comparatively recent introduction of new types of mining machines, mechanical loaders, face conveyors, and slabbing machines has encouraged the trial of new systems of face mining, all of which have for their object the rapid advance of the faces. Although the latter has certain economic advantages, in gassy mines the rate at which gas is given off is generally found to increase in proportion to the speed of advance into new territory, which in turn increases the difficulties of efficient ventilation of the face workings. Some of the systems of advance mining being tried in connection with new mechanizing methods practically compel the use of blower fans and tubing, as single narrow places arc now driven 300 ft. or more without crosscuts. Ten miles from Hartsel, near Antelope springs, in Park county, Colorado, there is a large area of unconsolidated lake-beds, which are interesting because at least a part of the lacustrine sands contains in the aggregate an immense amount of gold. During 1906, one of the arms of this dessicated lake was fairly well prospected with shafts and cuts by an Eastern company to test its value, as favorable amounts of gold had in some instances been found upon it. The claims of the company contain about 5,000 acres of the beds; bat this is only a small portion of them, a south branch from a main body, which is at least 7 miles in diameter, with other and very wide lateral gulches, paralleling the one herein described on the east and west. A certain amount of digging and sampling was done in the outside areas; but the result was evidently unsatisfactory, since the work was discontinued. Everyone in the coal industry from top management to the preparation engineer is vitally interterested in recovering as much salable coal as possible from the run-of-mine product. Coal losses from a preparation plant occur in the solid refuse material being discharged from the plant and in the bleed-off slurry from the water circuit. The refuse is generally hauled from the plant in solid form by trucks, conveyors, or aerial trams to the refuse or culm banks or it may be crushed and transported by hydraulic methods to refuse ponds or dams. The loss of coal in refuse material and the extent of this problem has been covered in another paper. The loss of salable coal in the plant bleed-off slurry is one of the water circuit problems in coal preparation plants. Slurries originate at various places in the processing circuits and are usually disposed of by transportation to waste ponds known as slurry ponds. Even though the combustible material discharged as slurry and refuse from the plant is labeled a loss, the loss must only be considered temporary. There is a tendency at the present time to examine refuse and slurry losses and to reprocess these materials to recover valuable coal.

The Climax Molybdenum Company's mine is situated on the Continental Divide at Fremont Pass in Lake County, Colorado. Elevations at the mine range from 11,000 it. to over 12,000 ft. The ore body is on the south flank of Bartlett Mountain, a prominent peak in the Ten Mile Range. A horizontal section of the mine, such as the Phillipson level (Fig. I), shows the outer ore zone as an annular ring varying in width from 300 to 800 ft., surrounding barren silicified rock. In vertical section the outer ore zone is dome shaped (Figs. 2 and 3), the apex of which is truncated at the surface by glaciation, exposing part of the ore body. The outer ore zone overlies the barren core and is itself overlain on the flanks of the dome with unmineralized rock. An ore zone of similar shape underlies the barren core of silicified rock, known as the Central Ore Zone (Figs. 2 and 3). Molybdenite is distributed uniformly through a zone of moderately silicified granite, schist and quartz monzonite (early) porphyry, around a highly silicified core. The molybdenite occurs in veinlets associated with fine granular quartz and pyrite, replacing altered and fractured granite, schist, and porphyry, and as coatings on numerous fractures cutting these rocks. Intense fracturing of all rocks is a characteristic feature of the Climax ore body. Most fractures are mineralized and no longer represent planes of weakness. Much fracturing is postmineral, however, and these fractures are generally filled with sericite or gouge, or remain as unmineralized joints separating otherwise massive rock into blocks of various size. Study and Mapping of Caving Characteristics Important differences in the behavior of caving of various blocks of ore at Climax have been recognized, involving arching of the rock over caved stopes, tendency of caved rocks to funnel, and size of caved rocks. Also, new problems have arisen associated with future mining on the Phillipson level, and may occur with proposed development of lower levels, such as excessive stress on mine pillars caused by large masses of overlying stable rock, and higher costs in maintenance of mine workings in soft, weak rock. To explain the differences and to provide solution for these problems, a study of geologic structure was undertaken early in 1944, to determine whether it would be possible to map cavability of rock from physical features exposed in mine workings and in diamond-drill cores. A comparison of known caved areas was made and rocks were classified structurally according to strength or degree of cavabil-ity. As nothing of this nature had been done before at Climax, the approach to the problem was rather indefinite. The susceptibility of titanium to stress orientation of hydride precipitates was investigated. It was determined that, when hydride precipitation occurred in titanium under an applied tensile stress of 30,000 psi, the hydrides precipitated on the titanium habit plane oriented most nearly perpendicular to the stress axis. Stress orientation of the hydride platelets occurred because the precipitation of the lower density hydride phase perpendicular to the stress axis caused expansion of the matrix in a direction that tended to relieve the applied stress. The Ti-H system has received considerable study in recent years, mainly because of concern over the effects of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of titanium. The amount of hydrogen present in commercial titanium is now quite low and should have no appreciable effect on its mechanical properties; however, many titanium applications require ex- posure to hydrogenous atmospheres under conditions in which hydrogen pickup is likely. In such cases continued exposures may cause the hydrogen content to increase to the extent that titanium hydride does precipitate as a second phase. The hydride phase has been shown 1,2 to have an adverse effect on the mechanical properties, particularly the impact properties, causing reductions in strength and ductility. BACKGROUND The behavior of titanium is often quite similar to that of zirconium and zirconium-base alloys, and the technology developed on one metal can often be applied to the other. Marshall and Louthan3,4 have shown that Zircaloy is susceptible to stress orientation* of zirconium hydride platelets, and that the platelet orientation has a pronounced effect on the mechanical properties of Zircaloy. They showed that when zirconium hydride precipitated in Zircaloy under an applied stress the hydride platelets tended to be aligned parallel to a compressive stress and perpendicular to a tensile stress. Polluted air and water, despoiled land and excessive noise are the unwelcome results of the population growth and a rising standard of living. The consumption of goods and services, including metal products and minerals, by all people is increasing so rapidly that civilization is in danger of destroying the environment in which it lives. This is true because every human activity affects the environment, whether it is air, water or land. While E. F. Osborn, director, U.S. Bureau of Mines, says . . . "some members of the mineral industry are reluctant to recognize environmental demands" . . . William T. Pecora Under Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior.. . says that, "to maintain levels of resource development and environmental quality needed to satisfy our affluence, we must trade off values rather than turn off troublesome operations." What it seems to boil down to is how much control of its operations is the mineral industry willing to accept-internal policing or strict government control? The answer lies in how well the mineral industry maintains a balance between mineral development and environmental quality.

THE shutdown of Homestake by Government order L-208, with its consequent disruption of a very stable and trained working force, coupled with postwar inflation and the coincidence that a mining depth had been reached that posed problems of ventilation, access to exploration areas, and choice of mining methods that would be applicable to zones of greater rock pressures made a very searching analysis of every phase of Homestake's operations a necessity. Any changes to be made had not only to meet the problems of deeper mining but also had to provide greater efficiency so that the mine might operate at a substantial profit until such time as a gold price adjustment might be forthcoming that would offset post-1945 inflation. Geology and Mining Situation The Homestake mine lies in the northern Black Hills in an area of Pre-Cambrian rocks exposed by the erosion of the paleozoic formations which covered the Black Hills. The Pre-Cambrian rocks in the vicinity of Lead comprise metamorphosed sediments with a total thickness of about 20,000 ft. The oldest formation, the Poorman, is ankeritic carbonate schist. The next oldest, the Homestake formation, host rock for all Homestake orebodies, is a siliceous iron-magnesium carbonate schist. The younger formations are dom-inantly argillaceous with some quartzites. Tertiary intrusive rocks cut all formations. The Pre-Cambrian rocks have undergone extreme isoclinal folding. Superimposed on this intricate folding are zones of shear folding which cross the isoclinal folds at small angles. The Homestake orebodies are pipelike replacements of the Pre-Cambrian Homestake formation where certain cross folds intersect some earlier isoclinal folds. These orebodies plunge flatly to the southeast at variable angles locally as steep as 45". The orebodies are replacement areas where numerous vein quartz of irregular shape have formed with surrounding zones of chlorite alterations containing disseminated sulfides and metallic gold. Where the numerous individual quartz veins with the sulfide and gold-bearing alteration zones are close together, large irregular orebodies with a roughly elliptical plan outline result. These ore zones may be more than 200 ft wide and 700 ft long in plan area. They have followed down the plunge of certain severely folded structures with great persistence. Two vertical operating shafts, the Ross and Yates, serve the mine, one with rope capacity to reach the 4850 level, the other to the 5000 level.

SYSTEMATIC data are presented on the relation of composition of nickel silvers to color, tarnish resistance, hardness and liquidus temperatures, for alloys containing up to 30 per cent nickel and 50 per cent zinc, further modified at certain nickel and zinc contents by 0 to 8 per cent of tin and 0 to 10 per cent of lead. Attention has also been directed, using a still more limited range of alloys, toward a study of tensile properties and such casting properties and characteristics as fluidity, shrinkage and pressure tightness. In some of these, rather broad ranges of composition are dealt with; in others, it has been expedient to focus attention on the Federal Specification 20 per cent nickel silver casting alloy, WWP-541. INTRODUCTION The demand for an alloy essentially white in color, which could be cast and worked by simple methods and which possessed strength and corrosion-resisting properties superior to the usual brasses, led to the discovery and early use of cupronickel alloys containing zinc, and some-times tin, lead and other metals. This type of alloy was generally known as German silver until the war, when the term "Nickel Silver" became generally accepted. The element principally responsible for the white color of the alloy and for its strength and corrosion resistance is nickel, which may constitute from 8 to 30 per cent of the alloy. The functions of the other elements will be described later. The manifold uses of nickel silver are largely due to its color, corrosion resistance, ease of casting, fabrication, joining and rather moderate cost. In many instances the alloy is finished by grinding and polishing while in others it may be finished with a silver or nickel plus chromium plate. Electroplates

A method for determining average reservoir pressure is presented, which is simpler to apply than that devised by Matthews. Brons and Hazebroek. For bounded reservoirs, identical results are obtained if stabilized-flow conditions prevail. The present method yields inferior results in the transient state. The method can, with a slight modification, also be used for water-drive reservoirs. INTRODUCTION In the method proposed by Matthews, Brons and Haze-broek' for determining average reservoir pressure in a multi-well reservoir, the cumulative production (the production time of each well) enters twice: once when the buildup is plotted against In (t + t)/At to arrive at p*, and a second time when the correction, p*-p is determined with one of the several formulas for differently shaped drainage areas. Once a steady state has been attained, however, the previous production history should be immaterial. The same pressure distribution could have been arrived at after different cumulative productions of the individual wells. In principle, therefore, it should be possible to determine average pressures without referring to cumulative productions. In the following paragraphs an expression is presented for the difference between the pressure in a producing well and the average pressure of its drainage area. Then the build-up time needed to overcome this difference is indicated. The investigation of the hot-working properties of metals and alloys furnishes a problem which has been attacked in many ways. Tensile, impact and hardness tests on heated specimens have furnished interesting data, but in most cases either the tests are difficult to make or the results hard to translate into terms of practical value. Some investigators have used the drop hammer to advantage. It furnishes a rapid and simple method of comparing the plasticity of metals at elevated temperatures. The indications obtained by its use are of value only in so far as their significance is understood and they can be intelligently used to predict the behavior of a given metal under given hot-working conditions. The work reported here was undertaken not only to add something to the existing volume of such data but also to contribute to our understanding of the results. Doerinckel and Trockels1 used cylindrical specimens and determined the work required to reduce the specimen to one-half the original height. Ellis2 studied the effect of constitution on the malleability of steel at high temperature. His method and that of Kent3 were similar to the one used in the present work. The tests described by Kent were made on samples of tin, zinc, aluminum, copper, lead, 70:30 and 60:40 brasses, with and without a small quantity of lead. He concluded that the test would "indicate whether a material can be forged at a given temperature without cracking." This interpretation must be used with caution. While it is probably true within limits, one must consider the severity of the forging operation. Again, it will not apply strictly to forms of hot working other than forging. For instance, an alloy running 61.0 per cent. copper, 3.25 per cent. lead, remainder zinc, will crack badly in the test, yet, it is extruded commercially. When the possibility of hot-working a new alloy is being considered a study of its drop-hammer test should help

As a service to its readers, MINING ENGINEERING is publishing the mineral industry portion of the 1957 list of Accredited Undergraduate Engineering Curricula in the United States. This list, revised annually, is issued by the Education Committee of the Engineers Council for Professional Development, and covers all phases of engineering education. The AIME is actively represented on ECPD, which was jointly organized by the Founder Societies and various other groups interested in the professional recognition of engineers. ECPD is merely authorized by its constituent organizations to publish a list of accredited engineering curricula for use as desired by those agencies which require such a list. It has no authority to impose any restrictions or standardizations on schools. (Date following school refers to year of initial accrediting.)

Annual pumpage of ground water from the alluvial valleys of California now is about 10 million acre-feet. This heavy pumpage has created problems of over-draft and ocean-water encroachment in many valleys. Steps are being taken to protect and increase the available supply but much additional basic study is needed.

From time immemorial the fissure-vein has been held the simplest type of ore-deposit. The prominence given to it by Cotta and his disciples, from their study of the mines of the Erzgebirge, is impressed upon technical literature; and, in consequence, the ores which carry the valuable metals have been supposed to occur mainly in fissures, cleaving the rocks in diverse directions, and the noblest type of vein has been deemed that which cut across the country independent of its structure, whether evidenced as bedding, foliation or cleavage, and which was identified with rents produced in the rocky crust of the earth. As so conceived, the vein was a fissure filled with ore, extending through the country for a varying distance, and continued downward to a depth more or less proportionate to its longitudinal extent. The vein-material was bounded by an encasement of rock, and those immediate surfaces which limited it on either aide were called " walls." These primary conceptions have become modified by the experience of modern mining in widely separated regions. The study of lode-formations has led to the recognition of notable departures from the supposed normal structure of the veins of Saxony and Cornwall, the two classic homes of early economic geology. Typically the walls of a vein are conceived as parallel rockplanes enclosing the ore; the upper one being called the " hanging-," and the lower the "foot-wall."* Walls are rarely alike.
