FACED with processing an increasing volume of raw material through its existing plant, early in 1955 Calaveras Cement Co. of California considered incorporating liquid cyclones in its raw mill grinding circuits. One of many problems was the prospect of handling larger volumes of finished slurry through existing pipelines. Fixed capacities of the mechanical classifiers also placed limits on plant expansion.

The history of iron ore milling in Chile can be divided into two periods: the first, which lasted about 40 years, ended in 1952 and the second continues today. During the first period, Bethlehem Chile Iron Mines Co. was the sole shipper and El Tofo, the only mine. That situation was forever altered in 1952 when several small independent companies began to sell ore. The success of these companies triggered programs of exploration which can only be described as a "boom" during the past five years.

Excavation of cavities below the ground water level induces water influx from the surrounding aquifer. An estimate of the rates of flow prior to excavation operations may be of valuable information for the mining engineer. The present paper deals with water influx into cavities of the tunnel type, e.g., mine galleries, tunnels, etc. The solution of the flow problem was obtained by a numerical finite difference method. The results are presented in dimensionless form as a function of the parameters characterizing the location of the cavity in the aquifer.

In an earlier paper1, the author described a method of interpreting earth-resistivity curves, based on the theoretical investigation of a single horizontal underlying stratum. If the four-electrode system of Wenner is employed, the resistivity in a homogeneous soil is given by the formula p = 2paR [1] where a is the electrode separation and R is the resistance of the earth between the two inner electrodes. If the earth is not perfectly homo¬geneous, the application of this formula gives an apparent specific resistance varying with the electrode separation. In the special case of the single horizontal underlying stratum, there is a surface layer of thickness h and resistivity pi and a lower layer, extend-ing to infinity, of resistivity p2. It has been shown by Lancaster-Jones2 that the apparent resistivity, obtained by an application of equation 1 is related to the true resistivities, the depth h and the electrode separation a by an expression of the form pa/p1 = 1 + 4F [2] where Pa is the apparent resistivity and F is a function (actually an infinite series), of the ratio h/a, and a reflection coefficient k = (p2 - p1)/(p2 + p1). For given values of h/a and k, the right-hand side of equation 2 can be calculated, and curves drawn showing the relationship between Pa/P1, h/a and k. Such a set of curves for the case when pi > P2 is given in Fig. 1.

PICK AND SHOVEL CLUB, CASE SCHOOL OF APPLIED SCIENCE The last meeting of the year of the Pick and Shovel Club of Case School of Applied Science was held on May 20, 1919. The speaker, Dr. Zay Jeffries, gave a very instructive and interesting talk on the Metallography of Non-ferrous Metals. The club has had a very successful year in spite of the loss of a few months time through the S. A. T. C. Among the speakers for the year were Dr. F. R. Van Horn, Dr. C. H. Fulton, and Dr. W. R. Veazey of our school; Dr. E. S. Moore of Penn. State College; Dr. Ansel St. John, of the National Carbon Co.; and Mr. V. S. Bidle, of the W. S. Bidle Co. Tests carried out in the Department of Mining and Metallurgy at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology indicate that high density rigid foams may, with the addition of suitable fillers, have structural properties comparable with concrete. Since polyurethanes have other useful properties that are unique to the foams, they have great potential value for both mining and civil engineering applications. Polyurethane, a generic term for a wide variety of closely related foam compounds, suggests rather misleadingly that foams are simple polymers of the urethane monomer ethyl carbamate (H,NCOOC,H,) . Polyurethane foams certainly do contain urethane groups, but these need not necessarily preponderate. Other reactive groups may be, and usually are, present so that the final polyurethane product will most likely contain, in addition to urethane groups, aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbon, ester, ether, amide and urea groups.

THE compositions of coexisting phases in the methane-propane-n-pentane system were determined at 160° and 220°F. throughout the two-phase region, at pressures above 500 lb. per sq. in. The experimental results permitted the calculation of gas-liquid equilibrium constants as well as the establishment of the critical behavior of this ternary system. The experimental results are presented in tabular form and a number of diagrams illustrating the phase behavior of this system have been included.

The US Bureau of Mines demonstrated ferric chloride leaching of galena concentrate on a continuous bench scale basis. Leaching was performed at 95°C (200°F) and with a contact time of 15 minutes. The ferric chloride leaching solution was continuously fed to a leaching tank at a constant rate for periods up to 45 hours. In each test, a constant redox potential was maintained in the slurry exiting the leaching tank by controlling the concentrate feed rate. In the 45 hour test, lead extraction exceeded 99.5%, and the lead chloride produced was 99.97% pure.

Theodore Dehon Rand was appointed Treasurer of the American Institute of Mining Engineers by the Council, at the Boston meeting of February, 1873, to fill a vacancy caused by the resignation of the treasurer who had been elected at the first meeting in Wilkes-Barre in May, 1871. He was elected by the Institute to this offce in the following May, and yearly thereafter until 1903. He often alluded with amusement to the abrupt way in which he was injected into this position, by my coming to his office and asking him to accept the appointment as Treasurer, on the ground that he was eminently fitted for the position by reason of his legal and business knowledge, his interest in geology and mineralogy, and more particularly because he was a neighbor of the person (to wit, myself) who was slated for the Secretaryship, and they could thus convenient.ly confer on Institute matters. WITHIN the last ten years Kentucky has become celebrated for its low-sulfur bituminous coals. Prior to this time, many investigators had discovered the abundance of this coal but the fact was unknown to the general public until the last extension of Kentucky's mountain railroads was completed. The coals of Kentucky are, broadly, separated into two geographic units-the eastern and the western coal fields. On a basis of their sulfur content these coal fields fall into three units, which are indicated on the accompanying map, by numbers, 1, 2, and 3. The area marked 1, the very southeastern part of the State, shows the lowest sulfur, all coals being averaged. In this field the maximum is 1.04 per cent. and the minimum as low as 0.68 per cent.-both averages and not individual analyses, which would of course show much greater variation. Included in this group are the following counties: Lawrence, 0.87 per cent.; Martin, 0.75 per cent.; Johnson, 0.73 per cent.; Magoffin, 0.S7 per cent.; Floyd, 0.88 per cent.; Pike, 0.68 per cent.; Knott, 1.04 per cent.; Perry, 0.77 per cent.; Letcher, 0.80 per cent.; Leslie, 0.70 per cent.; Harlan, 0.79 per cent.; Knox, 0.86 per cent.; and Bell, 0.92 per cent. The total average sulfur content for these thirteen counties is 0.82 per cent. Bordering the restricted low-sulfur field of eastern Kentucky is the No. 2 belt (slightly darker), which is commonly known as the western border of the eastern coal field. Here the maximum sulfur is 2.91 per cent. and the minimum 1.05 per cent. Again these are averages and not individual analyses. The counties in this group are: Greenup, 2.60 per cent.; Boyd, 1.67 per cent.; Carter, 1.07 per cent.; Morgan, 1.40 per cent.; Wolfe, 1.83 per cent.; Lee, 2.93 per cent.; Breathitt, 1.85. per cent.; Owsley, 1.09 per cent.; Jackson, 1.06 per cent.; Rockcastle, 2.30 per cent.; Clay, 1.09 per cent.; Laurel, 1.08 per cent.; Pulaski, 2.24 per cent.; Whitley, 1.05 per cent.; McCreary, 1.50 per cent.; and Wayne. The sulfur percentage average for this area including fifteen important counties is 1.65 per cent.

The flow of material in a pump mixer-settler extractor was studied photographically and visually by injecting dye into the equipment and following its advance through the various sections of the equipment. Volumetric measure of the flow was obtained from analysis of the photographs. The organic portion of the settling chamber, the fluid surrounding the pump mixer, and the pump mixer itself were found to be operating in plug flow. The aqueous portion of the settling chamber was found to be partially mixed. Significant dynamic effect was noted due to density changes in the feed streams. The quantitative and qualitative observations made of the flow within a single stage should be of value in predicting the flow patterns in all similar equipment, including opaque and liquid metal solvent extraction systems.
