THE world production of copper for the first eight months of 1927 shows an increase of 3 per cent over the same period in 1926. Since February of this year, however, production has been considerably curtailed. The United States reduction in the last four months has been offset by the increased South Ameri-can and Belgian Congo production. The United States is now producing 58 per cent of the world production, Chile and Peru 17.3 per cent, Belgian Congo 5 per cent. In 1926 the United States produced 54 per cent, Chile and Peru 16.3 per cent, Belgian Congo 6.3 per cent. Tracer diffusion of Fe59 has been measured in the a-stabilized Fe-1.8 at. pet V alloy from 700° to 1500°C. The activation energies are obtained in both the presence and absence of magnetic order. Furthermore, it is established that diffusion in the alloy is identical to that in pure iron and consequently the values of Do and Q accurately represent the temperature dependence for self-diffusion. The purpose of this investigation is to obtain an accurate estimate of the temperature dependence for self-diffusion in bee iron in both the presence and absence of magnetic order, and, in so doing, to establish the temperature range of the magnetic effect.&apos;" As the temperature interval suitable for diffusion measurements is severely limited in both bee phases of pure iron because of the intervening fee ? phase, the experiments were performed on an a-stabilized alloy containing 1.8 at. pet V. This alloy is bee over the entire range from room temperature to the melting point. Although there have been several independent investigations of self-diffusion of iron in a, iron,1, 3-6 there still exists considerable disagreement regarding the values of Do and Q for the paramagnetic region. The two systematic studies of diffusion in 6 iron6, 7 previously reported are also only in fair agreement; but in view of the extremely small temperature range available for diffusion studies, i.e., 1390o to 1535oC, this is not surprising. It is comparatively easy to obtain accurate values of Do and Q for the a-stabilized alloy inasmuch as measurements can be made over the entire temperature range -700o to 1500°C. However, in order to assume that these same values apply to pure iron requires careful comparison of the data in the a, and 6 regions in both the alloy and pure iron. We have made several measurements in the appropriate temperature ranges and are unable to establish any systematic difference between the diffusion coefficients of iron in pure iron and in the alloy. We therefore conclude that the values obtained for the alloy are truly applicable to pure iron; the complete evidence favoring this conclusion will be discussed later in this paper. EXPERIMENTAL The experimental methods will be given here only in barest detail since they have been thoroughly de- scribed elsewhere.l, 7 The alloy was prepared by induction melting and chill casting under argon. Diffusion samples were machined from the ingot and annealed in hydrogen for several days at 900°C to give an average grain diameter of 1 to 2 mm. The penetration profiles of the tracer were established by a sectioning technique, the residual activity being counted after the removal of each section. The tracer used is Fe59 which emits two high-energy ? rays of 1.098 and 1.289 Mev, respectively; these were detected by a ? scintillation counter equipped with a pulse-height analyzer. For the measurements in the temperature range -700o to 1130°C the samples were vapor-plated with Fe59, encapsulated in quartz under vacuo, and annealed in resistance-heated furnaces which are controlled to ±1°C. The specimens diffused at higher temperatures are prepared as edge-welded couples, the two halves being separated by a thin washer of the alloy to prevent sintering. The diffusion anneal is then carried out by inductive heating under a dynamic vacuum. The temperature is monitored pyrometrically. RESULTS The diffusion coefficients are obtained from the penetration profiles in the usual way using the error-function complement relationship. The results over the entire temperature range are shown in Fig. 1. In the linear region, 900o < t > 1500°C the least mean squares (lms) values of the diffusion coefficients are given by D = 1.39 exp[-(56.5 ± 1) x 103/Rt] cm2/sec [l] The average departure of the measured diffusion coefficients from the values given by Eq. [1]In order to determine whether or not the slope is truly constant over the entire range from 900" to 1500°C, the data are arbitrarily divided into two groups, the first containing values between -900" and 1133°C and the second between -1133o and 1500°C. The lms values for the two groups are given by Eqs. [2] and [3]: D = 0.519 exp[-55.7 x 103 /RT](900° to 1133°C) cm2/sec [2] D = 1.45 exp[-56.7x103/RT] (1133° to 1500=C) cm2/sec [3] Thus, there is no significant difference between the high- and low-temperature segments of the linear region. THE wire-rope hoisting conditions at the mines of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. in Butte, Mont., are very severe because of the conditions under which it is necessary to operate. A study was made, in the fall of 1919, for the purpose of changing these conditions in order to obtain longer rope and sheave life. There are at present in Butte, hoisting engines equipped with wire rope as follows: 9 main hoists using flat ropes. 7 main hoists using 1 ½ in. rope. 5 main hoists using 1 ¼ in. rope. 6 shafts using 1 1/8 in. rope. 2 chippy hoists using 1 ¼ in. rope. 9 chippy hoists using 1 1/8 in. rope. 15 shafts using 1 in. rope. 7 shafts using 7/8 in. rope. 1 shaft using ¾ in. rope. In addition, there are a number of sinking engines using 5/8 in., ¾ in., 7/8 in., and 1 in. (15.9, 19, 22, and 25 mm. rope.) The flat ropes run from ½ by 7 ½ in. (12.7 by 190.5 mm.) to ½ by 4 ½ in. (9.5 by 114 mm.) and are used on the older hoisting-engines, which are set comparatively close to the shaft. Because of swelling and moving ground at some of the shafts, these ropes present certain difficulties in operation that are more pronounced than with round ropes; they are, therefore, being superseded by round ropes as newer engines are being installed. They are, however, much more easily inspected and repaired than round ropes.

The ore treated at the reduction plant (called Yangdei) of the Chiksan Mining Co., Korea, is brought from four of the company mines, and from the small tribute mines. The largest shipments come from Sajunkohl mine, situated about a mile and a half from the mill (Fig. 1). The ore is quartz of medium hardness. The average assay value in gold is $6.95 per ton. At the mine the ore is put into bins, and is then trammed over an 8 per cent, grade to the tipple bins above the mill, where the ore is drawn through the mill holes as desired. The capacity of the tipple bins is about 3,500 tons. Ore from Moonsukohl, Chung Tarrie, Yang Chun, and the tribute mines is brought in by bulls and bull wagons. The bulls carry from 350 to 800 lb.; the average wagon load is about 1,200 1b. (Fig. 2). One shovelful of ore out of every ten is taken as a sample. THIS paper is a progress report on a study, of the distribution of the banded ingredients (Figs. 1 and 2) in- Illinois screenings and the method of determining their distribution. Proximate analyses and screen tests1 have been reported and a further report on the washability characteristics of the screenings is in preparation. The microscopic study of the screen-ings is not yet far enough advanced to permit a conclusive report on the effect of mining, screening and washing on the distribution of the banded ingredients in the coals of Illinois. However, considerable fundamental data-have been collected as a background for the screenings investigation and for a proposed study of fuels composed of known quantities of vitrain, clarain and fusain, the three common banded ingredients of Illinois coals. These fundamental data and the preliminary information now available from the microscopic study of screenings are broadly indicative of the reaction of the coals to the physical processes affecting them in mining and preparation. Proximate analyses of samples of vitrain, clarain, and fusain from several Illinois mines have been published 2, but those given in Table 1 serve to show the differences that are apparent in proximate analyses. The vitrain samples are consistently low in ash, and the unit-coal value is uniformly lower than in clarain. The average .fuel ratio (F.C./V.M.) of the vitrain samples in the table is 1.57-whereas the clarain average is 1.42. The fusain analyses vary considerably in ash and moisture. In the two samples from this mine the moisture values range from 8.99 to 22.80 and the ash from 4.86 to 16.91 per cent. Fusain has higher fixed carbon than either vitrain or clarain but the percentage is erratic from sample to sample.

THE method of measurement of surface on quartz particles was given in a previous paper.1 With such a method the relation of surface produced in crushing quartz can be compared to the work in crushing without recourse to sieve sizing or microscopic measurement. In crushing, the work input must be known with a fair degree of accuracy. With crushers, rolls, ball mills, and similar apparatus the measurement of the work in crushing is subject to possible errors, due to friction in .the transmission as well as in the machine itself. Moreover, relatively large quantities of material must be crushed to get an average figure. In the selection of a method of crushing, simplicity in design and operation was desired and this was most readily obtained by the use of a free-falling body. A description of the apparatus embodying this principle is given herewith. THE CRUSHING DEVICE The apparatus used is shown in Fig. 1 and in cross-section in Fig. 2. The material to be crushed is placed in the crushing chamber C in the steel mortar M. The mortar is 3 in. dia. by 3 in. high. Two mortars are used, one having a crushing chamber 1-in. dia. by 1/2 in. deep, with a capacity of 4 g. of quartz, the other having a crushing chamber 1 ½ in. dia. by 3/4 in. deep, with a capacity of 12 g. of quartz. The position of the mortar is adjusted by means of three centering screws A. The steel plunger P, which fits neatly into the chamber, is placed on top of the material to be crushed. Plungers of different lengths were tried and as they were found to give practically identical results the length adopted was equal to the depth of the chamber.

The solubility limit and the diffusivity of carbon in molybdenum have been obtained by duffising carbon into molybdenum rods from a Mo + Mo2C powder mixture. The solubility limit was taken as the long-time asymptotic limit of the rod composition. The diffusiv-ity was obtained from fractionally saturated rods from the rate of change of the average composition. Compositions were determined by chemical analysis. The solubility limit obtained is: WhILE the Mo-C system is important in refractory alloy technology neither the solubility limit nor the diffusivity of carbon in molybdenum is unambiguously known. In Fig. 1 the Mo-C phase diagram is presented. The heavy lines, the terminal solution solubility limit, and the eutectic temperature are results of the present investigation and will be discussed in detail later. However, it is readily seen that the previously published solubility limit determinations, Few and Manning1 and Fromm and ROy2 differ by up to an order of magnitude. The general form of Fig. 1, the Mo2C field, and a eu- tectic temperature -2200°C are due to an early Investigation by Sykes et a1.3 Although they did not determine the solubility limit, they did establish that the maximum at the eutectic temperature was about 1000 ppm. The only other prior data found on the solubility limit is from a lattice-parameter study by Speiser et a1 .,4 from which it can be concluded that the maximum solubility is greater than 1800 ppm. There does not appear to be any data oh the diffusivity of carbon in molybdenum. However, Samsonov and Epik5 have determined, from the rate of growth of an MozC layer, the diffusivity of carbon in Mo2C, and this has been erroneously interpreted, for example by ~c~eil,&apos; as applicable to diffusion of carbon in molybdenum.

AN intermetallic compound, Ni3A1, has an ordered fcc structure of type Ll2, and shows peculiar dependence of the yield stress upon temperature; i.e., the yield stress increases by a factor of six upon raising the temperature from 77" to 900K1, 2 This compound is technologically important, since many nickel-base superalloys owe their high-temperature strength to the peculiar yield stress behavior of Ni3Al. The only study of the elastic behavior of this compound was made by Davies and Stoloff,1 who determined Young&apos;s modulus of poly crystalline Ni3A1 between 300" and 730°K. The determination of single-crystal elastic constants of Ni3A1 is therefore of interest in connection with dislocation dynamics and is reported in this paper. A single-crystal specimen, 1 by 1 by 3 cm, was cut from an ingot generously supplied by Dr. B. H. Kear of Pratt & Whitney Aircraft. Following initial machining with a Servomet and a surface grinder, the specimen was etched and annealed at 1100°C for 5 hr in vacuum followed by furnace cooling. Two parallel faces were oriented normal to within ±l deg of a [I101 crystallographic axis by the back-reflection Laue technique. The parallel faces were hand-lapped, etched, and polished by the usual metallographic procedures. Final thickness along the [I101 axis was (0.9325 * 0.0005) cm. Chemical analysis gave an average composition of 87.35 pct Ni. Total impurity content is esimated to be no more than 0.1 pct. The elastic constants were calculated from measurements of ultrasonic waves which were propagated along the [110] axis. A longitudinal wave and two shear waves whose displacements are aligned along the [ 110], [li~], and [001] directions, respectively, are necessary in order to completely specify the three elastic constants. Two 3/6-in. quartz transducers were bonded to the parallel faces of the sample with ~ac-seal.3 Although this bond was sensitive to thermal shock, it performed satisfactorily over the entire temperature range for both longitudinal and shear wave propagation. A frequency of 5 mHz was employed in the method of Williams and Lamb4 in order to measure the absolute value of the ultrasonic velocity. The pulse-overlap technique of Mcskimin5 was also used at this frequency in order to determine the shift in the ultrasonic velocity

It has been observed that upon invasion of a sand containing oil or gas and connate water by mud filtrate the hydrocarbons are more rapidly flushed by the filtrate than is the connate water.&apos; In time, it appears that the following displacement pattern emerges: oil (or gas) is being swept ahead by connate water which, in turn, is pushed by invading fluid. Eventually the connate water may have "banked up" sufficiently to form a zone of appreciable thickness leading the invading front. In the extreme case, Fig. 1 shows how the situation will develop.&apos; Immediately adjacent to the borehole (radius r) there is a zone, the invaded zone proper, where the connate water has been flushed out completely and which contains only residual oil or gas and mud filtrate. This zone (extending out to a radius ri) grades more or less abruptly into the next (thickness A), which contains only residual hydrocarbon and connate water. Beyond it, again more or less sharply bounded, extends the virgin formation with the original interstitial water saturation Sw. The various saturations are indicated in Fig. 1. The three zones generally will be marked by resistivity contrasts owing to their different fluid contents. As the connate water is usually more saline than the invading fluid, the second zone having a high connate water saturation forms a concentric cylindrical ring or annulus of low resistivity R, around the borehole.&apos;,&apos; It will be referred to as the "low zone." Fig. 1 shows schematically the resistivity profile. It is clear that the phenomenon of a low zone could not occur in invaded water sands. The presence of a low zone, therefore, would be a qualitative indication of a hydrocarbon-bearing formation. Granted that the phenomenon is real, if it were pronounced enough to be detected, one might thereby have a means of locating oil or gas in the ground. This is the aim of the "displacement logging" method.&apos; In any case, the presence of a low resistivity zone will affect the reading of electric logs. Using conventional log interpretation techniques, one must be aware of this and, if necessary, correct for it. Whether correction or detection should be the goal will depend primarily on the magnitude of the effect. The type of log which is likely to be affected most is the induction log. The current pattern of an induction log is concentric with the borehole. Any concentric ring of low resistivity, therefore, will tend to become crowded by current lines. This zone of maximum current density will obscure the relative contributions to the current conduction by other portions of a bed making, for instance, the contribution of the virgin formation less significant and thus detracting from the value or the induction log as an R, reading device. The present note is intended to ascertain the maximum possible effect of a low zone in the extreme case portrayed by Fig. 1 on three commercially available types of induction logs, sc., 5 FF 27, 5 FF 40 and 3 F 60. Type 5 FF 27 or 5 PF 40 is currently run in conjunction with a 16 in. normal and SP log. This combination is gradually replacing the regular electric survey (two normals and one lateral) as a standard log in many areas. On the basis of the scheme of Fig. 1 (sharp boundaries between successive zones), the thickness of the low zone may be computed for various amounts of infiltration measured by the ratio of invaded zone diameter to hole diameter D,/d. Referring to Fig. 1, we can set up a material balance for the water displaced from the invaded zone proper and the water present in the low zone. The volume of connate water displaced from invaded zone upon flushing by mud filtrate is: V1 = e p (r2 - r2) ? Sw . where c = bed thickness ? = porosity Su, = original connate water satu-ration. (communication to the Secretary*).-The discussion of Mr. Henrich&apos;s paper took place at a meeting from which I had the misfortune to be absent, and has just come to my attention. I do not wish to let the subject pass without contributing to it a little information which has come into my possession. In 1912, I published a brief note in the Transactions on The Effect of Alumina in Blast-Furnace Slags, giving in tabular form three typical slags used in iron blast-furnace practice, one of them the high alumina slag of, which Professor Richards speaks. In subsequent experience with charcoal furnaces, I found the same rule to hold; that the chemical effect of alumina could be disregarded, providing the ratio of the lime and magnesia to the silica were kept constant. This is exactly the experience which Messrs. Dwight and Mathewson had in copper- and&apos; lead-smelting furnaces. I have never seen any evidence or argument adequate to support the contention of Professor Richards-that the alumina acted as a base in the charcoal iron furnace and as an acid in the coke furnace, and that the function of alumina in iron-furnace slags is inherently different from that in copper- and lead-furnace slags-and I am compelled to differ absolutely with his conclusions in that respect.

A simple and rapid three-component analysis procedure has been developed for use in fluid-flow studies. The method is based on refractive index measurements, combined with refractive dispersion measured between the Ha and H wave lengths. The procedure requires. calibration curves for the three-fluid system. The only restriction on the fluids employed is that only one be an aromatzc or olefinic compound. Individual sample measurements require only a few minutes. Composition results within the limits of accuracy required for fluid-flow analog studies are obtained. INTRODUCTION The simultaneous analysis of three-component mixtures is a problem often encountered in fluid-flow analog systems. In petroleum production research, the problem is usually encountered in experiments on the displacement of fluid from a porous medium. In the case of immiscible displacement, simple volumetric measurements of the produced fluids are usually sufficient, the analog fluids often being the actual reservoir fluids themselves — oil, water and gas. However, modern secondary recovery of petroleum sometimes involves production under miscible conditions, in which the oil is displaced by liquefied petroleum gas which, in turn, is displaced by dry gas. Since this type of displacement is done under conditions of pressure and temperature that are not easily reproduced in the laboratory, studies are often performed with analog fluids at essentially atmospheric pressure. Since the number of samples taken during one of these experiments is usually quite large, the time required for analysis becomes an important factor. In the past, the difficulty of conventional analysis has been avoided by the addition of various tracers to one or more of the components, or by the use of a tracer fluid as one of the components. With these techniques, a relatively large amount of analytical time is still required. Moreover, in the case of added tracers, the tracer material may migrate in part to one of the other fluids, may be adsorbed on the solid surfaces of the model, or may introduce side effects not characteristic of the prototype fluid. The substitution of a tracer fluid for one of the components can severely limit the choice of analog fluids. Optical refractometry provides a rapid and economical method of analysis of two-fluid systems or of monitoring small changes in composition of an essentially one-component system. Refractometric methods are capable of high degrees of accuracy, require only very small samples and can easily be adapted to automatic methods. They are not generally applicable, however, where three or more fluids are present over wide ranges of concentration. The method of three-component analysis described here has three essential characteristics. 1. It is based on refractometric measurements and thus preserves all of these desirable properties. 2. It does not make any stringent demands on the choice of fluids that can be analyzed. 3. It is capable of accuracy sufficient for fluid-flow analog studies. THEORETICAL The difference in the refractive index of a substance at two different wave lengths of light is known as its dispersivity. When the difference is taken between the specific refractions at the two wave lengths, the quantity is referred to as the specific dispersivity. Specific refraction was defined empirically by Gladstone and Dale1 as r = n-1/d....[1] where n is the index of refraction and d is the density. The application of electric power for driving mine hoists handling heavy loads at high speeds has recently been extended by the installation of what is probably the largest electrically driven hoist in this country at the Granite Mountain shaft of the North Butte Mining Co., Butte, Mont. While the weight of rock which is hoisted by this machine is not the largest now being handled by electric mine hoists, the speed of hoisting is so, and the combination of the high speed with the heavy load has resulted in a machine of considerable interest to all those actively engaged in mining. Aside from mere considcration of size, this installation deserves attention because of the careful attention given, not only to the question of economy of operation, but to the details of construction and installation of the entire equipment. The conditions to be met in this installation were as follows: Weight of rock to be raised per trip, 7 gross tons........... 15,680 1b. The ore is mined in several levels and hoisting is carried on from the 800-ft. level down to the 2,700-ft., which is at present the maximum depth from which the ore is raised regularly. Development is proceeding and a depth of 2,900 ft. has already been reached. The rock is handled underground in cars holding % ton, and about 10 cars are the usual load for a skip. All of the ore is dumped into underground bins, which are of diffcrent capacities varying up to 250 tons. From the bins the ore is fed into the skips without passing into measuring pockets. 3.1-1. Purpose. Development drilling is directed towards determining the grade, volume, and three-dimensional outline of a mineralized zone previously located by exploration. It is distinguished from exploration or reconnaissance drilling, which has as an objective the discovery of new mineralized areas. A development drilling and bulk sampling program should furnish the following information: 1. Geology of the mineralized zone. 2. Quantitative data on grade and tons of material within pertinent cutoff limits. 3. Physical size and shape of the deposit. Areas underlain by waste as well as ore. 4. There are numerous methods and techniques that are used to acquire pertinent data on a potential ore deposit. The total cost and accuracy of a development program depends on significant evaluation of the geology, proper selection of a drilling method, thorough analysis of sample data, and accurate evaluation of all the information. Knowledge of the geology of the mineral deposit is important in planning the development testing program and in evaluating the data obtained from such a program. Exploration work usually provides some significant information on the general size, shape, thickness, grade, and geology of the deposit. In some cases no further data are needed; in many cases geological complexities suggested by the preliminary work require further geological study. Of considerable importance may be the following:

Stress-strain data are reported for sodium chloride, lithium fluoride, and magnesium oxide tested in compression at diffevent strain rates in the telrlperature range from 70° to 873°K. Quantitative equations are given for the stvain-rate dependence of the critical resolved shear stress and the initial rate of work havdening. The properties so determined are compared with results previously reported for metals. ALTHOUGH the effects of strain rate and temperature on the stress-strain characteristics of metals have been extensively investigated1,2 these effects have not been studied in detail in ionic crystals. In the only previous investigations on the effect of strain rate on the deformation of ionic crystals. Gilman and gohnston3 and Hulse and pask4 have shown that the yield stress of lithium fluoride and magnesium oxide at room temperature is proportional to the ninth or tenth root of the strain rate. CRYSTAL PREPARATION Lithium fluoride, sodium chloride. and magnesium oxide single crystals were purchased from the Har-shaw Chemical Co. The compression fixture and sample preparation have been described in detail previously.5 The detectable impurities in MgO were eight parts in 105 of Fe and six parts in 105 of Si; in LiF, six parts in 105 of Mg; and in NaC1, two parts in 105 of Fe and four parts in 10&apos; of Mg. The cleaved samples measured - 0.1 in. by 0.1 in. by 0.3 in. Prior to testing all samples were annealed at -0.8 of their melting point and cooled to room tempera- ture at 50 C per hr.&apos; Samples were strained at rates (<) of 0.1, 0.01, 0.002, and 0.0002 in. per in. per min. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Fig. 1 is a plot of the critical resolved shear stress a,. (extrapolation of slope of easy glide region to zero strain) of sodium chloride, lithium fluoride, and magnesium oxide tested at different strain rates as a function of temperature. In all crystals at all strain rates a, decreases with increasing temperature according to an equation of the type397 where uo is a stress constant, K is a constant, and T is the absolute temperature. The points in Fig. 1 are the average of six tests. It is evident that there is a break in the log 0,- temperature plots at a characteristic temperature T,. The constant K of Eq. The metric system is now in official use in the Republic of Mexico, having been adopted by the Government in the year 1862. Athough it is used to compute all customs and other duties to be paid to the General Government, in the measurement of public and private lands arid in all freight and other transactions on the railroads, and is taught exclusively in the public schools, the system has made but slight head way among the people,and has not succeeded in displacing the old-time weights and measures, which are still used in ordinary commerce. The latter were founded on old Spanish models, but, owing to the inexactness of the first standards and to subsequent changes, differ at present very widely from their originals. As to local modifications, weights are the same all over the Republic, but measures of the same name differ greatly in capacity in different States, and even in neighboring towns. The value in the metric system here assigned to each denomination of the old weights and measures is that fixed by the Mexican Government at the time of the adoption of the metric system. The equivalents in American weights and measures were calculated by me from data found in Trautwine&apos;s Pocket-Book as to the comparison between the French and American weights and measures, and are believed to be correct. I shall be thankful for early notice of any error that may be detected, that it may be corrected before the final publication of this paper in the Transactions. Linear Measures. Kilometers. IN an effort to employ cast steel of a stronger structure than that found in the annealed steel castings, the possibilities of heat treatment which will increase the strength without materially decreasing the ductility may be resorted to. The following abstracted report (which is a brief outline of what has already been clone by the Pennsylvania Railroad Co. at its shops and Test Laboratories at Altoona, Pa.) is of material interest, as it indicates what may be done with steel castings when properly treated, thereby permitting in railway service greater strength of cast steel parts without any increase in weight or space. The question of the heat treatment of alloy steel castings is not taken up in this paper. The obscurity formerly surrounding the heat treatment of steel has been for the most part removed by the development of our knowledge of the critical points of steel, pyrometers, furnace construction, and the testing of the finished product. The operations of the heat treatment proper will be taken up under the heads of (1) heating for quenching; (2) quenching; (3) drawing. (1) Heating for Quenching.-Heating for quenching is best conducted slowly, especially in the case of castings of variable thickness. Cracks may occur either in heating or in cooling, clue to different temperatures at different points of the casting. The castings should be thoroughly soaked at the maximum temperature (generally 1,500° to 1,600° F.), 1 hr. being sufficient for sections 1 ft. in thickness. The minimum temperature which will produce the desired hardening effect will, in all cases, be found to be the most satisfactory, as the grain coarsens when the critical range is exceeded to too great an extent. All temperatures should be governed by a checked pyrometer with the hot junction to the heated object, and with several couples in a large furnace to insure a uniform temperature.

The idea of using water-only cyclones to scalp clean coal from the feed to other devices has recently been gaining in popularity. 1,2,6 An indication of this popularity is that water-only cyclone scalping is already employed in a few commercial plants. Water-only cyclones scalp the feed to a heavy media vessel in the Warwick plant,3 to Deister tables in the Rowland plant,4 and to a heavy media cyclone circuit in the Amherst Coal Company&apos;s McGregor plant.5 Despite this trend, we found surprisingly little information in the literature on the performance of water-only cyclone scalping. Therefore, we undertook a study of its technical merits, limiting our investigation to a water-only cyclone scalper in conjunction with heavy-media cyclones. We felt this to be a reasonable combination of equipment, since both processes operate well on the same size coal. First, we developed simple mathematical relationships revealing general characteristics of the system. Next, we compared the clean coal yield and quality obtainable by the system on four different coals with that obtainable by heavymedia cyclone circuit alone and water-only cyclones middlings recirculation circuit alone. This was done by using computer program to simulate the operation of the three systems. Finally, we considered the effect that implementation of the system would have on a typical preparation plant circuit. The System The system chosen for study [(shown schematically in Fig. 1)] comprises two stages: a primary stage (PI) consisting of water-only cyclones, and a secondary stage (P2) consisting of heavy media cyclones. The water-only cyclones separate raw coal at a low specific gravity, producing a relatively small amount of high quality clean coal and a refuse containing much good coal. This refuse is then recleaned in the secondary stage, where the sharper separation of heavy media cyclones, operated at a higher specific gravity, reclaims additional clean coal. Finally, the clean coal from both stages is combined as the system&apos;s clean coal, while the refuse from the secondary stage becomes the system&apos;s refuse output. Theoretical Analysis Two assumptions lie behind the following theoretical analysis. The first assumption is that partition curves can represent not only the performance of each stage but also the performance of the system as a whole. These curves show partition number as a function of specific gravity, where partition number is either the percent or fraction of a raw coal with a given specific gravity reporting to clean coal. The second assumption is that these curves are independent of the raw coal characteristics. At any specific gravity the system&apos;s partition number is solely a function of the partition numbers of each stage. For convenience, we use the following variables in describing this relationship: g = specific gravity, PS(g) = the partition number of the system at specific gravity g, P1(g) = the partition number of the primary stage at specific gravity g, P2(g) = the partition number of the secondary stage at a specific gravity g. For this system, we can show algebraically that the relationship is: [Ps (g) = PI (g) + (1- P1(g)) P2 (9)(1)] With this equation the system&apos;s partition curve can be determined if the partition curves of each stage are known. By definition, the partition numbers P1(g) and P2(g) must each be less than, or equal to, one. Placing these constraints on Eq. (1), we arrive at the relations: [Ps(g) % P1(g) and Ps(g) % P2(g)(2)] Thus, at any specific gravity the system&apos;s partition number is always greater than that of both stages. The distribution coefficient, k, of interest in zone refining is generally defined as the ratio of the solid to the liquid solubilities of one element in another at the normal melting point of the solvent. In practice, distribution coefficients are frequently calculated from solubilities at temperatures well below the melting point of the solvent, e.g., at a eutectic temperature. This is done because of the general lack of accurate data on the liquidus and solidus curves in most phase diagrams. The practice is equivalent to assuming that the liquidus and solidus curves are straight lines in the temperature range between the melting point of the solvent and the temperature at which data for the solubilities are known. It is recognized that the k values so derived may be in serious error; we have found evidence in recent zone-refining operations that a case in point is silicon in aluminum. The phase diagram found in the literature for silicon in aluminum indicates a eutectic on the aluminum-rich side at 12.5 at. pct Si and at 577°C,1 and a solid solubility of silicon in aluminum at this temperature of 1.59 pct.2 It also shows the liquidus and solidus as nearly straight lines from 577°C to the melting point of aluminum (660°C)1,2 The k value obtained from this data is 0.13. This is almost exactly the same as the k value (about 0.14)&apos; obtained in a similar way for copper in aluminum. Yet we have found by mass-spectrograph analyses* of three bars of zone-refined aluminum that copper is efficiently removed from aluminum by zone refining but silicon is not. Two of the three bars of aluminum were zone-refined in our laboratories, the other in the laboratories of AIAG Metals, Inc. The former two bars, designated bars PG2 and PG3, were 30 in. long by 1 in. in diameter during refining; each was processed in a high-purity graphite boat* and kept under refining stage of the process consisted of thirty unidirectional zone traverses at rates of about 1 to 2 in. per hr, with a zone length of 1 to 2 in. At approximately the middle of the refining period a 6-in. piece of the impurity-laden finishing end of the bar* was cut off and replaced with new start- ing material. Following refining, the purest 20-in. section of the bar (obtained by discarding approximately 2 in. of the starting end and 8 in. of the finishing end of the bar) was leveled and then analyzed. The AIAG bar was 16 in. long and about 1.2 in. in diameter; it was purified by eight passes of a 2-in. zone at a rate of 1.6 in. per hr, the bar being contained in a sintered alumina boat lined with loose alumina powder of the highest purity. Data for the silicon and copper contents of the three refined bars are given in Table I. Derived data for the efficiencies of the zone-refining operations are listed in Table 11. It is clear from these two tables that the copper is removed much more efficiently—by a factor of 10 to 50 times—from aluminum during zone refining than is silicon. For example, in bar PG3 the thirty zone passes reduced the copper content from 10 to 0.02 ppm, i.e., by 500 times, whereas the same treatment lowered the silicon content by only a factor of about 16. It seem virtually certain, therefore, that the distribution co efficient, k, for silicon in aluminum is well above that for copper and is very likely not much below unity. This also implies that the solidus line on the aluminum-rich side of the A1-Si phase diagram is very probably appreciably curved near the aluminum melting point since the phase-diagram data indicate such curvature is unlikely in the liquidus.

It is the purpose of this paper to review somewhat in detail the literature on the subject that is extant, which ought to provoke considerable beneficial discussion. The value of 1 per cent. ash in blast-furnace practice was brought to the attention of the writer when he was connected with the U. S. Steel Corpn. Various groups of blast furnaces in the Pittsburgh district compiled a statement in which the average saving was about 6 c. per ton on pig iron for every 1 per cent. of ash reduction. Later, the same groups of furnaces, when materials had reached a higher price, compiled a statement in which there was a 30-cent saving on pig iron for every 4 per cent. ash reduction in the Pittsburgh district, which was equivalent to 7½ c. for every 1 per cent. ash reduction. In the Chicago district, on long freight hauls of coal and coke from the Pocahontas district, the set-up was 30 c. per ton of pig iron for every 2 per cent. ash reduction, or 15 c. for every 1 per cent. Some years ago, Ralph H.
