In many experiments involving electropolishing such as electropolishing during deformation and electrothinning of deformed metals for electron microscopy, it is usually assumed that the specimen temperature is the same as the temperature of the polishing bath. In order to test this assumption, the interior temperature of aluminum single and polycrystals was measured while they were being electropolished. Specimens were 1/4 by 1/4 by 6 in. and were of 99.99 pct purity. A small hole 1 in. deep was drilled axially at one end of the specimen so that a copper-constantan thermocouple could be inserted. The electropolishing solution was 4 parts methanol (reagent grade) and 1 part perchloric acid (70 pct). The electropolishing was performed using an apparatus shown in Fig. 1. The electropolishing solution was stirred by a motor-driven stirrer and was cooled to —5°C with a mixture of methanol and dry ice. Electrolyte temperature was measured and remained at -5°C during the electropolishing. Current density of 0.3 amp per sq. cm was used. When the current was turned on, after about a 5-sec delay, the temperature began to rise rapidly until it reached 65°C. Uniquely colored, thin-bedded quartzite is quarried between Crossville and Crab Orchard in Cumberland County, Tenn. It is produced in all sizes up to the limits of transportation from beds usually ranging in thickness from less than 1/2 in. to 6 in. The stone is very resistant to wear and weathering and is marketed throughout the country for many different purposes in exterior and interior construction. The annual production exceeds 36,000 tons, valued at nearly $1,000,000.

This paper discusses the design and calibration of a Faraday pail for measuring electric charge. The paper also shows that at least for two minerals, quartz and calcite, the phenomenon that Johnson termed "reversibility" can be explained in terms of the contact electrification between the minerals and the metal rotor of an electrostatic machine. Each year the free world produces about 13 million tons of mineral concentrates by electrical separation. However, despite the rather general acceptance of electrical concentration as an industrial process, research in this area has lagged far behind the efforts devoted to competitive processes such as froth flotation. The purpose of this paper is to describe the design and calibration of a Faraday ice pail for measuring charge density on mineral grains and to show some of its applications in the area of electrostatic and electrodynamic research. THE DESIGN AND CALIBRATION OF FARADAY PAILS FOR ABSOLUTE CHARGE MEASUREMENT The electric charge on mineral grains at a given time during an electrical concentration process is de- pendent on many factors and cannot, in general, be accurately calculated a priori. It is thus important to devise a method of measuring absolute charge. One method of measuring electric charge is to note the potential rise of an electrometer when charged particles drop into a Faraday pail. Two types of Faraday pail have been constructed and calibrated. The first type, Faraday Pail I (Fig. 1), is a vertical pail originally designed to measure the charge due to contact electrification between mineral grains and a metal rotor or due to conductive induction when mineral grains are passed over a rotating cylinder in the presence of an electric field. The second type, labeled Faraday Pail II (Fig. 2), is a horizontal pail designed to determine the charge distribution of mineral grains after they pass through the separating zone of the electrical concentrator shown in Fig. 4. The main advantage of the horizontal pail is its low head-room requirement and the long opening which enables the experimenter to sample the entire width of the stream of minerals being separated. The Faraday pails were calibrated in the following manner: A calibration head was constructed in the form of a hollow brass sphere that could be held in an insulated metal cylinder by vacuum (Fig. 1). The capacitance of the sphere was calculated by measuring the capacitance of the sphere and cylinder combined and that of the cylinder alone and subtracting the latter measurement from the former. The sphere was then charged to a known potential (V) and allowed to drop into the Faraday pail which was attached to a Keithley Model 610A electrometer. IT is not my purpose to burden you with many statistics. The charts herewith should be considered merely as indicating the trend. I believe' that is what is really of interest to us. It is difficult, if not impossible to forecast with any assurance future developments, because of possible new mines, competitive materials, curtailment' or increase in the use of the metal in certain markets, and many other factors that have a vital bearing on any industry. Fig. 1 shows United States smeltet output of copper, starting with 1845. It is estimated that in 1928 the smelter output of copper will be about 1,010,000 tons. Between 1895 and 1905 it increased about 200,000 tons, and between 1905 and 1915 about 240,000 tons. Between 1915 and 1925 the increase was about 140,000 tons. This is an average increase over 30 years of about 190,00Q tons per ten-year period. At the present time the indications are that this demand for increased production will continue. As to whether or not we have the supplies or facilities to maintain this increase or a greater one, remains to be seen. Provided it is possible for United States smelters to increase their production, they should be producing at the rate of about 1,210,000 tons or more per year by 1935.

THIS paper is presented in the belief that metallurgists and chemists will be interested in the practice of grinding in tube-mills in connection with stamps, especially since the records of working here given extend over a lengthy period of time (since May, 1905). The ore from the Waihi mine-more especially that produced in the upper levels-contains a large proportion of hard, chalcedonic quartz, and the gold exists in an exceedingly fine state, conditions which necessitate very fine crushing in order to ob¬tain a high extraction of the precious metal. Before the introduction of tube-mills at the 90-stamp Waihi mill, it was found necessary to stamp through 40-mesh (1,600 holes per sq. in.) woven wire-screens, having a fairly high discharge. Discussion of the paper of H. 0. Hofman and C. R. Hayward, presented at the New Haven Meeting, February, 1909, and printed in Bulletin No. 30, June, 1909, pp. 513 to 529. GEORGE W. RITER, Salt Lake City, Utah (communication to the Secretary*).-In their paper, Messrs. Hofman and Hayward deal with a branch of silver metallurgy that is on very uncertain ground, both as a commercial process and as a metallurgical science; moreover, its field is limited to few localities and to peculiar conditions. The literature on the subject is incomplete and full of conflicts. The paper under discussion clears u p no disputed points; on the contrary, because of hasty generalization, its tendency is towards further confusion. In Table I., the authors assume that each test-lot of 1,800 g. of ore contained exactly 5.499 g. of silver, that any variation in the quantity of silver recovered, however slight, should be ascribed to variation in the time of grinding. It is barely possible that the ore was mixed so uniformly as to justify this assumption; but those of us who know how difficult it is to get uniform samples of any ore in which silver mineral is present in rich particles will have a doubt on this point. The unlikelihood of getting absolutely uniform test-lots of ore also reflects on the data in Table II., on the effect of varying the amount of salt in a pan-charge. The authors say " The salt series was the last one that was investigated." This again raises a question as to whether the ore was split into test-lots at the time of sampling, or whether it was kept in bulk in such a way as to permit mechanical concentration of values before the end of the experiments. The conclusion following Table II.: " There is no reason, therefore, for going beyond six per cent. of salt," is hardly to the point. If we assume that salt is of benefit only when in solution, it follows that the relation between the quantity of salt

Zinc difhsions in gallium arsenide having surface concentrations as low as 5 x 10'' atoms per cu cm have been attained. A multiple-difhsion sequence is employed during which zinc enters the gallium arsenide from a silicon dioxide film in a solid-to-solid diffusion step. The technique is illustrated for the case of a zinc surface concentration of -1 x 1017 atoms per cu cm and a junction depth of 1.2 p. Radiotracer measurements of -0.1-p layers of gallium arsenide are used to delineate the resulting profile. A diffusion coefficient for zinc in pyrolytically deposited silicon dioxide is reported. ZINC is frequently used as an acceptor impurity in gallium arsenide. As examples, p-n junctions are formed using zinc-diffused layers in solar cells, lasers, and varactor diodes. For these purposes surface concentrations of 10'' to over loz0 zinc atoms per cu cm are desired and readily obtained from a vapor source. Diffusion of zinc into gallium arsenide to yield surface concentrations of about 1017 atoms per cu cm, however, is more difficult. For instance, oldstein' reports that large changes in the vapor density of zinc produce only small changes in surface concentration. Such low surface concentrations are necessary in forming the diffused base of a gallium arsenide double-diffused n-p-n transistor in order to obtain an adequate emitter efficiency. An alternative approach to zinc diffusion which can provide reduction in surface concentration of several orders of magnitude is the introduction of the diffusant from a solid source. This can be conveniently accomplished by using oxide films of the type generally employed for selective diffusion masking. Such oxides also serve to prevent the dissociation of the gallium arsenide surface at the high temperatures of diffusion. DIFFUSION PROCEDURE Fig. 1 illustrates the diffusion sequence which is employed for obtaining zinc surface concentrations in the range from 5 x lom to 1 X 10" atoms per cu cm. The description of technique will be given for the instance of -1 x 1017, which is typically utilized in double-diffused gallium arsenide transistor investigations at this laboratory. Tin- or germanium-doped gallium arsenide wafers drawn from crystals grown by horizontal Bridgman or Czochralski techniques are used, with bulk concentrations ranging from 1 to 3 X 10" carrier atoms per cu cm. Each wafer is chemically polished on the (iii) arsenic face using a mixture of five parts concentrated sul-furic acid, one part water, and one part 30 pct hydrogen peroxide at room temperature, followed by rinsing in deionized and quartz-distilled water. Pyrolytic silicon dioxide was chosen as the oxide coating because of the high quality of the films obtainable, the ease of their preparation, and the excellent control over film thickness and uniformity.

Cast-iron, or pig-iron, is iron which contains all the carbon that it could absorb during its reduction in the blast-furnace. As is well-known to chemists, carbon exists in cast-iron in two distinct forms. In chemical union, as "combined" carbon, it cannot be discerned, except as it may increase the whiteness of the fracture, in so-called white iron, or carburetted iron (sp. gr. about 7.72). Carbon mechanically mixed with the iron as graphite is visible, varying in color from gray to black, while the fracture of the iron, according to the color and amount of graphite it contains, ranges from a light to a very dark gray. The specific gravity of graphitic iron is about 7.40. Silicon in cast-iron is evidently to some extent combined with the iron and the carbon ; but whether it exists also in a form corresponding with graphitic carbon, mechanically mixed with the remaining mass, is a question still in dispute, which we have not in this paper endeavored to answer. AT the request of the Council of the Institute, I have the honor to submit the following remarks upon the Program of Tests under which the current work of the Watertown Arsenal Testing Laboratory is carried on, which comprises, among other items, the tests of steel ingot metal and derivative shapes. The intended scope of the tests may be illustrated by extracts from the descriptive part of the program as submitted by the Laboratory under date of April 17, 1907, and subsequently approved by the Chief of Ordnance, U. S. A. Under Item 1, Ingot Metal-Open hearth, acid and basic; Bessemer, acid and basic; crucible; fluid compressed and uncompressed-descriptive remarks were made as follows ; " A thorough, fundamental inquiry into the physical properties of steel necessarily begins with the ingot metal. Investigations, having for their object the improvement of steels, should also begin with the ingot. A knowledge of the ingot structure is essential for judging of the subsequent behavior or appearance of the metal. Under ordinary conditions, so little information is obtained from the ingot in individual cases that practically none of importance is acquired. These remarks have particular reference to the state of physical and structural soundness of the steel. Questions of chemical composition, segregation, piping and the grosser cavities have frequently been given attention. Defects of continuity of structure, which manifest themselves in the working; of the metal, and at the final stages cause distrust in the finished forging, have generally been neglected. ? AT the time flotation appeared upon the metallurgical horizon in Arizona, the writer, under the direction of Dr. Ricketts, was engaged in remodeling and enlarging the No. 6 Concentration Plant of the Arizona Copper Co. at Morenci, and the work had been in progress nearly a year before the Inspiration experiments with flotation had disclosed the revolution in concentration that was at that timè impending. The simplified flowsheet worked out for the remodeling of the Morenci plant had been based upon the removal of the freed metal in a minimum number of stages by treatment upon tables equipped with Butchart riffles, the latter being adapted to accomplish both classification of feed and removal of the metal at one operation, substantially as described in my previous paper.1 The scheme of treatment for the slime was based upon the well-known fact that after copper sulphides, such as chalcocite and chalcopyrite, etc., are reduced to a certain extremely fine state of comminution they are definitely beyond the reach of separation upon any of the concentrating devices then known. By using drag-belt classifiers (which served as conveyors as well as separators), the overflow would be of the usual "slimes" class. Experiment had shown that when these drag-belt overflows were, properly diluted (that is, to about 5 to 7 per cent. solids in the feed under treatment) . the very fine sand, and especially the very fine but still granular sulphide particle's, would, if given a short distance to fall, quickly settle out in prime condition to yield an excellent recovery on vanners; a further valuable feature would be that the very fine non-separable final overflow tonnage might be discharged direct to tailing, thus conserving space requirements so as to permit within the old building, without embarrass-ment, the increase of capacity required.

Single-crystal films of boron have been prepared by thermal reduction of purified BCl3 with subsequent deposition of boron onto oriented silicon substrates. The structural properties of films prepared under various experimental conditions have been determined by light microscopy and "grazing-" angle electron-diffraction analysis. An orientation relationship is proposed for silicon and a-rhombo-heclral boron which can be described as: (111)Si (112)B; [110]Si [110]B ElEMENTAL boron is known to have a high energy gap* and consequently has potential value as a high- *Energy gaps of 1.35 to 1.55 ev1-3 and 2.0 ev4 are reported for ß-rhombohedra1 and a-rhombohedra1 boron, respectively. temperature semiconductor.5 Exploitation of this property, however, has been hampered by the unavailability of pure, single-crystal boron. Two recent symposia6,7 have treated the subjects of purification, crystallization, crystal structure, and properties of boron and provide a foundation for further investigation in these areas. The structure, lattice constants, and observed ranges of stability for four reported polymorphs of boron8°12 are listed in Table I. The rhombohedral structures are generally accepted as true polymorphs whereas the tetragonal structures are believed to be transient. Most currently available single crystals of boron are grown by Czochralski and floating-zone methods. Unfortunately, these crystals generally contain numerous defects and are highly strained as a result of the polymorphic transformations and thermal contractions which accompany cooling. Recently, Armington, Potter, and Tanner13 have reported the formation of single-crystal films of boron on silicon single-crystal substrates through thermal reduction of BC13 by hydrogen. Boron E. T. Hanscom Field, Bedford, Mass. formed at temperatures near 1000°C was identified as the a-rhombohedra1 form, consistent with expectation. The present paper describes a continuation of this work with specific reference to characterization of the structural features of the deposited boron films. The ultimate goal of this program is to produce large-area single-crystal films of a-rhombohedra1 boron to be used for electrical and optical studies by other workers. PREPARATION OF BORON FILMS The experimental procedure of preparing thin films is similar to that described by Theuerer14 for the epitaxial growth of silicon by thermal reduction of SiC14 and has already been described as applied to the preparation of boron thin films.13 Briefly, a mixture of BCl3 vapor and dry hydrogen is passed over a heated silicon substrate. Thermal reduction of the BC13 allows deposition of boron on the substrate. The substrates were {111}-oriented, single-crystal silicon. A technique previously used to prepare alloys of InAs1-xPx and GaAsl-x Px, miry: the gaseous hydrides arsine and phosphine, has been extended to grow single -crystalline GaAs 1-x Sb x by replacing the phos-phine with stibine. Procedures were developed for handling and storing stibine which now make this chemical useful for vapor phase growth. This represents the first time that this series of alloys has been grown from the vapor phase. Layers of P -type GaSb and GaSb-rich alloys have been grown with the carrier concentrations comparable to the lowest ever reported. In addition, a p-type alloy containing 4 pct GaSb exhibited a mobility of 400 sq cm per v-sec which is equivalent to the highest reported for GaAs. RECENTLY, interest has been shown in the preparation and properties of GaAs1-xSbx alloys, since it was predicted1 that for compositions in the range of 0.1 < x < 0.5, they might provide improved Gunn devices. However, preparation of these alloys presents fundamental difficulties. In the case of liquid phase growth, the large concentration difference between the liquidus and solidus in the phase diagram, at any given temperature, introduces constitutional supercooling problems. It is likely that, for this reason, virtually no description of the preparation of GaAs1-xSbx by this technique has been reported. In the case of vapor phase growth, problems are presented by the low vapor pressure of antimony, and the low melting point of GaSb and many of these alloys. In previous attempts1 at the vapor phase growth of these materials, using antimony pentachloride as the source of antimony vapor, alloy compositions were limited to those containing less than about 2 pct GaSb. This was in part due to the difficulty of avoiding condensation of antimony on introducing it to the growth zone. A growth technique has recently been described2 for the preparation of III-V compounds in which the hydrides of arsenic and phosphorous (AsH3 and pH3) are used as the source of the group V element. With this method, GaAs1-xPx and InAs1-xPx have been prepared2&apos;3 across both alloy series with very good electrical properties. Since the use of stibine (SbH3) affords the potential for effective introduction of antimony to the growth apparatus, in analogy with the other group V hydrides, this growth method has been explored for the preparation of GaAs1-xSbx alloys. In addition to GaSb, these alloys have now been prepared with values of x as high as 0.8. In the case of GaSb, undoped p-type layers were grown with carrier concentrations equivalent to the lowest reported in the literature. Thus it has been demonstrated that, with this growth technique, all of the alloys in this series can be prepared. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A) Growth Technique. The growth apparatus, shown schematically in Fig. 1, and procedure are virtually identical to that described2 for the growth of GaAs1-xPx alloys, with the exception that phosphine is replaced by stibine.* HCl is introduced over the gallium boat to *Purchased from Matheson Co., E. Rutherford,N+J. transport the gallium predominantly via its subchlo-ride to the reaction zone, where it reacts with arsenic and antimony on the substrate surface to form an alloy layer. The fundamental limiting factors to the growth of GaAs1-xSbx alloys from the vapor phase, especially GaSb-rich alloys, are the low melting point of GaSb (712°C) and the low vapor pressure of antimony at this temperature (<l mm). Thus, relatively low antimony pressures must be employed, which, however, imply low growth rates. To provide low antimony pressures, very dilute concentrations of arsine and stibine in a hydrogen carrier gas were used. Typical flow rates (referred to stp) were about 4 cm3 per min of HC1 (0.06 mole pct)+ from 0.1 to 1 cm3 per min of ASH, (0.002 to 0.02 mole pct), and from 1 to 10 cn13 per min of SbH3 (0.02 to 0.2 mole pct), with a total hydrogen carrier gas flow rate of about 6000 cm3 per min. Although no precise data on decomposition. kinetics exist, it is known4 that stibine decomposes extremely rapidly at elevated temperatures. However, the high linear velocities attendent with the high total flow rate (about 2000 cm per sec) delays cracking of the stibine until it reaches the reaction zone and prevents condensation of antimony in the system. The nature and comparative features of anthracite and bituminous coals have been discussed by the writer in two previous papers.&apos; Although this paper is offered as a further contribution to the subject, it seems desirable at the outset to repeat some of the descriptive matter of the early works in order to show the actual connection between various constituents of both coals and the new photomicrographs and other physical and chemical properties. Structure of Anthracite and Bituminous Coals A lump of bituminous coal (Fig. 1) is readily seen to be composed of layers differing from one another in texture, luster and thickness. There are, in general, three kinds of layers, although only two are usually seen. One is deep black, very compact, and has a bright luster; another is grayish black, has a duller luster and is less compact; the third is black, dull and porous in appearance, but because of its thinness is not often seen except on parting surfaces. This last material is charcoal. American students of coal morphology use the names anthraxylon, attritus, and fusain to designate these three constituents of laminated coal. Anthraxylon refers to the brightest bands, attritus to the duller layers, and fusain to the charcoal. Close examination of a lump of bituminous coal shows the brightest deep black layers to be embedded in the duller grayish black laminae. These deep black layers are lens-shaped and vary in thickness from thin sheets to over half an inch. They are often so continuous through the lump that their tapering terminae are not noticeable. On careful examination the duller grayish black laminae (Fig. 7) are seen to contain many very thin sheets of this very bright black material. The charcoal

The introductory paper1 of this series described the potential behavior of tin in sodium carbonate and bicarbonate solutions whose pH ranged from 8.4 to 11.2 and demonstrated that significant and reproducible results could be obtained by proper attention to experimental technique. In examining the corrosion of tin under such conditions, it is desirable to know the effects of anions, aside from carbonate, that are likely to be present in commercial materials packaged in tin. Therefore, in this paper the potential behavior of tin in carbonate solutions to which sodium fluoride, chloride, bromide, iodide, sulphate, nitrate, monobasic phos-phate, dichromate, perborate and acetate have been added will be dcscribed. For most of the additions, solutions containing 0.001 and 0.01 moles of the added material were studied. The experimental procedure was exactly the same as that described in the first paper; the pH of the electrolyte was controlled by adjusting the ratio of carbonate to bicar-l,ol~ate as follows: pH 0.1 M NaHC0............................................ 8.4 2 parts 0.1 M XaHCOr, 1 pa.rt 0.1 M NaZCO?................. 9.5 1 part 0.1 M NaHCOs, 2 parts 0.1 M iVa.,C03. ................ 10.0 0.1 M Na2C0............................................. 11.2 The reagents used were all of C.P. grade. Relative permeability and relative electrical resistivity curves are obtained for networks of tubes with a tube radius distribution by means of a network of resistors used as an analog model. These curves are similar to those obtained from real porous media. The effects of pore size distribution and network structure on relative permeability and resistivity are demonstrated. INTRODUCTION Study of the dynamic properties of networks of single size tubes in paper IT&apos; of this series has shown that the network model has flow properties similar to those observed on real porous media. The comparison of properties of single size tube networks with those of real porous media cannot be carried far because very few porous media have uniform size pores. The capillary pressure curve from most porous materials such as soil, sandstone, and sintered glass indicate that these materials have pore size distribution similar to those shown in Figs. 5-1, 9-1, and 10-I.† To properly test the network model, it is therefore necessary to compare the dynamic properties of real porous media with those of networks of tubes in which the tube radii are distributed accord- ing to the distributions in the aforementioned figures. A network in which the tube sizes are distributed cannot be treated in the same manner as a network of single size tubes. In the single size tube network, the relation between tube geometry, flow resistance, and tube volume did not have to be known if the assumption was made that whatever relation did exist was the same for all tubes in a particular network. In a network of distributed tube size, the relation between tube geometry and flow resistance must be known or assumed in order to replace the tubes by equivalent electrical resistors. Relation of Tube Geometry to Flow Resistance The interchangeability of tubes and electrical resistors in the network model is possible because of the analogy between Poiseuille&apos;s law and Ohm&apos;s law. Poiseuille&apos;s law for a cylinder is q= pr4/8µl ?P.........(1) where q is the volumetric rate of flow, µ is the viscosity, ?P is the pressure gradient, r is the tube radius, and 1 is the tube length. Ohm&apos;s law is I=1/R?E..........(2) where I is the flux and is equivalent to the volumetric rate in Poiseuille&apos;s law, R is the resistance, and ?E is the voltage gradient. Both laws give the flux as a function of the potential drop and the resistance of the medium. By analogy then, 1/R=pr4/8µl ?P...........(3)

MANY of the nickel-base superalloys developed recently for use in the as-cast condition exhibit a massive "white-etching" constituent1 in the inter-dendritic regions. Commercial alloys in this category are SM 200,* IN 100, INCO 713, and Nicrotung. The appearance of a similar microconstituent in nickel-rich Ni-A1-B alloys has been reported by Schijbel and Stadelmaier. Their investigation revealed that this constituent was the binary eutectic of the terminal nickel-base solid solution and the inter metallic based on Ni3A1. This binary eutectic is degenerate and NhA1 is the major phase. At lower temperatures the eutectic composition lies within the NkA1 phase field and under equilibrium conditions is single-phase NisAl. Taylor and F&apos;loyd3 have shown that in Ni-Al-Cr alloys containing at least 8 at. pct Cr, liquid compositions which solidify by the eutectic reaction in the nickel-rich portion, precipitate nickel-base solid solution and NiAl rather than nickel-base solid solution and NkA1 in the binary Ni-A1 system. Since the nickel-base alloys contain chromium in excess of 8 at. pct and are further alloyed with one or more of the elements titanium, cobalt, molybdenum, or tungsten, it is possible that the eutectic could contain NiAl rather than NisAl. In addition, Benson4 has reported that in low-nickel austenitic high-temperature alloys, which possess Ni/(Al + Ti) atomic-weight ratios <18.0, the Ni (Al, Ti) phase may precipitate from the melt during solidification. Since SM 200 and similar high-temperature materials were developed from alloys which were designed for solution treatment, the appearance of a eutectic would indicate that the limit of solid solubility has been exceeded. The purpose of this note is to confirm that the massive white constituent in the complex nickel-base alloys investigated is based on the binary eutectic Ni + NbAl and that the limit of solid solubility need not be exceeded to produce it, in common with other observations of cast alloys. Successive polishing of a sample of SM 200 showed that, in agreement with Schobel and Stadelmaier, particles of the constituent were spherulitic and in particular were a) situated between cored dendrite arms, Fig. 1, and b) nucleated at the surface of dendrites, Fig. 2. The Ni/(Al + Ti) atomic-weight ratios for the nickel-base alloys which were observed to contain the massive eutectic constituent in the interdendritic regions are 12.1 (Nicrotung), 9.2 (IN loo), 19.5 (INCO 713), and 14.5 (SM 200). However, the results of X-ray analysis of these alloys in the as-cast condition failed to reveal the presence of the Ni (Al, Ti) phase. An electron microanalyzer was therefore employed to analyze the composition of this constituent in SM 200. The results of analyses of representative particles are as follows5: 8.4 at. pct Ti, 8.8 at. pct Co, 5.5 at. pct Cr, 0.9 at. pct W, 12.8 at. pct Al, and 63.6 at. pct Ni. Assuming that

THE chief difficulty in determining oxygen in steels is its tendency to form a variety of compounds. Almost every element, found as an ingredient in steels, maybe expected to be present as an oxide. Some of these oxides have widely differing properties, and consequently behave differently when attempts are made to reduce them by the vacuum fusion method. As I pointed out in a paper published in the Transactions of the A.S.S.T., Vol. 20, No. 1, many experimenters are spending considerable time and effort in attempting to deter¬mine the degree of completeness of the above reactions, and hold different opinions on the matter. In studying this subject the following table, taken from Hodgman and Lange&apos;s "Handbook of Chemistry and Physics" may be used as a guide.

SINCE the Saar started. the real progress in scrap-metal recover is in the change of point of view regarding secondary metals. The tendency had been to regard scrap as the normal outgrowth of obsolescence, fluctuating somewhat from periods of depression to periods of prosperity. but nevertheless an unwieldy economic factor more to be contended with than embraced. Now, metals above the ground are being looked upon as semi-permanent reserves or stock piles in various stages of repeated use or revolving life cycles. The change in point of view is due to the forced realization that domestic supplies of new metals are limited and many foreign sources are at least temporarily closed. The stock piles must be cultivated. The reserves must be made more nearly permanent. Steps are being taken : (1) develop methods for recovery of scrap metals heretofore not recovered, and (2) restrict strategic metals to uses ensuring a large percentage of re-use, which in turn means substitute materials in the dissipative uses.

The dynamic principal stresses induced within rock by an explosion under con fined conditions are analyzed for the case of blasting with one free face by applying the values of measured radial displacement, particle velocity and so on to equations derived from the theory of elasticity. The dynamic stresses on the free face are also calculated from the strain measured by wire strain gauges affixed on the free face. Some results obtained are briefly: 1) The maximum stress on the free face appeared at the intersection between the free face and the burden, and its magnitude was about twice as large as the magnitude of the tangential tensile stress imparted by the incident stress wave within the range related to the breakage by blasting. 2) The maximum value of the compressive stress near the free face was decreased due to the existence of the free face, while that of the tensile stress was increased. 3) At any point near the free face, the directions of the principal stresses in the r? plane using spherical coordinates with the origin at the center of the spherical charge, changed with time except in the direction of the burden. However, at another point near the explosion point where the principal stresses were mainly those stresses caused by the initial longitudinal wave, the directions of the principal stresses coincided with those of the coordinate used. 4) The maximum value of the tensile stress in the F direction was larger than those in the re plane at and near the free face. 5) The tensile stress caused by the Hopkinson effect appeared only near the burden. 6) It is presumed from the results of stress analysis that radial cracks will be produced in the rock mass near an explosion point, but with the approach of the free face, the directions of cracks curve towards a direction parallel to the free face. INTRODUCTION In order to investigate the mechanism of rock breakage by blasting, it is considered to be very im- portant to know how the stresses are generated and distributed within the rock by explosion of a confined charge. As part of a research program concerning the mechanism of rock breakage by blasting, the authors have already published papers on the detonation pressure produced at the inner surface of the charge hole1 and on the behavior of the dynamic stresses within rock caused by an explosion in the case where no free face existed.&apos; In this study the dynamic stresses on and near the free face have been investigated for the case of blasting with one free face. The mechanism of rock breakage in blasting is discussed in the light of these studies.
