I TTRIUM is a close-packed-hexagonal metal with a c/a ratio of 1.5712.1 This low c/a value prompted a cursory examination of the deformation modes to obtain more data on the deformation characteristics of hcp metals with subideal c/a ratios. The chemical analysis of the arc-melted stock from which the specimen was cut is given below in Table I.

(communication to the Secretary*) :-In my paper on the Conservation of Natural Resources, I referred to the slow replacement of bee-hive ovens by the by-product ovens as a most notable instance of waste. And I quoted from Mr. Parker's report for .1906 an explanation given by him in accounting for the small production of by-product coke. It was that the markets for the by-products of the coke-ovens was so limited that some of the ovens constructed were out of operation. His report on the manufacture of coke in 1908 1 does not record an improvement, and attributes the strange fact that we alone, of all the industrial peoples, delay the adoption of this cardinal improvement from the continuance of the same almost inexplicable cause. To quote again from his report, lie says (p. 241): "The year 1908 was not marked by any notable gain in the construction of by-product coking plants, though some new work was done. There was a net increase of 115 in the number of completed ovens in 1908 over 1907, the totals for the two years being, respectively, 3,892 and 4,007. The additional equipment consisted of 140 Koppers regenerative ovens built at Joliet, I11., by the United States Steel Corporation, but this increase was partly offset by the dismantling of Y5 Semet Solvay ovens at Sharon, Pa., the net gain being 115 ovens. Included in the total of 4,007 completed ovens in 1908 are 152 Newton-Chambers ovens at Vintondale, Pa., but as no recovery of by-products was made at this plant in 190S, the production of coke is included with that from beehive ovens. The 56 ovens of the same type at Pocahontas, Va., have not been in practical operation since they were first. installed. In addition to these there was one other by-product plant of 120 ovens. Oat. was not operated during the year. The number of retort ovens producing coke in 1908 was 3,679, as compared with 3,811 active ovens in 1907." ONE OF the most hopeful features of the current depression is the discussion which it has en- gendered of ways and means to counteract similar recurrences in the future. 1t is widely recognized that fruitful attack will be directed toward the steady employment of labor, through which the purchasing power of this preponderant class in society will be maintained. S. A, Lewisohn's article' has presented the major factors to be considered; the physical suffering and mental torture endured by those who are deprived of income through no fault of their own, the direct economic losses' sustained in the degradation of 'great, numbers of our population and the disintegration of efficient working forces, and the prime responsibility of owners and managers.

The iron-mines of the Ilsede Hutte Co. are at a town called Peine, about 20 miles east of the city of Hanover, on the railroad to Brunswick (Braunschweig). Hanover, the capital of the province, is a military city, of approximately 250,000 inhabitants, and Brunswick, 33 miles to the westward, has half this number. The mines here described are located in a hamlet called Bulten. The Ilsede Hutte Co. operates two mines, 1.5 miles apart, in this district, Gruber Bulten Adenstadt and Gruber Lengede Bodenstadt. It also operates an iron-mine north of Hanover, known as Eiserhaven, and one in the Harz mountains, the Georg Friedrich, at Grauhof. At Bulten a coarse conglomerate, a, Figs. 1 and 2, contains nodules of limonite, cemented together by calcium phosphate. The ore contains Fe, 25 to 45; Mn, 3 to 4; P, 0.6 to 1.4; '5, 0.02 to 0.09; and CaCO,, 40 per cent. Directly above the conglomerate is limestone, 6, followed by a mixture of clay and sand, c. Below the conglomerate is a hard clay floor, d. The ore-body, from 10 to 12 km. long, and from 3 to 4 km. wide, has a maximum thickness of 20 m. It dips approximately 10" S.E., and strikes K 45° E. Diamond-drill prospecting shows that the thickness diminishes to 1 m. as the end of the deposit is approached to the northward. At this point the deposit is 250 m. below the surface. In Fig. 2, the arrow, A, indicates the general direction of the work along the face, a, which is carried forward in a straight line for its entire length. At B, a train is approaching, which has come from the bench-track, shown at C, by a circuitous route, and is dumping the overburden behind the face, in the space left by the excavated rock. This paper is a progress report on a study of the distribution of the banded ingredients (Figs. 1 and 2) in Illinois screenings and the method of determining their distribution. Proximate analyses and screen tests1 have been reported and a further report on the washability characteristics of the screenings is in preparation. The microscopic study of the screenings is not yet far enough advanced to permit a conclusive report on the effect of mining, screening and washing on the distribution of the banded ingredients in the coals of Illinois. However, considerable fundamental data have been collected as a background for the screenings investigation and for a proposed study of fuels composed of known quantities of vitrain, clarain and fusain, the three common banded ingredients of Illinois coals. These fundamental data and the preliminary information now available from the microscopic study of screenings are broadly indicative of the reaction of the coals to the physical processes affecting them in mining and preparation. Proximate analyses of samples of vitrain, clarain, and fusain from several Illinois mines have been published2, but those given in Table 1 serve to show the differences that are apparent in proximate analyses. The vitrain samples are consistently low in ash, and the unit-coal value is uniformly lower than in clarain. The average fuel ratio (F.C./V.M.) of the vitrain samples in the table is 1.57 whereas the clarain average is 1.42. The fusain analyses vary considerably in ash and moisture. In the two samples from this mine the moisture values range from 8.99 to 22.80 and the ash from 4.86 to 16.91 per cent. Fusain has higher fixed carbon than either vitrain or clarain but the percentage is erratic from sample to sample. A combined process of segregation roasting-flota-tion or magnetic separation was developed to recover nickel from lateritic iron ores and oxidized nickel ores. An ore was mixed with a halide, such as sodium or calcium chloride, and a solid reductant, and roasted, whereby the nickel content was segregated out as discrete metallic particles. Either by magnetic separation, or by flotation using a sulfhydryl collector together with a heavy metal salt as an activator, the metallic nickel could be concentrated, Effects of such variables as the types and amounts of the halide and solid reductant addition and of the roasting conditions were extensively investigated. The concentration results on several types of ores from Japan, the Philippines, and New Caledonia are presented. Laterite is a residual product of rock decay in tropical and subtropical regions, and consists mainly of hydrated oxides of iron and alumina. Those derived from serpentine sometimes become enriched in nickel, cobalt, and chromium contents. Oxidized nickel ores are of the similar origin, but their nickel as well as silica contents are higher due to gamierite-type silicates. Apparently, nickel enrichment is more pronounced in the transition region between the surface layer of iron laterite and the underlying serpentine. Iron laterites often contain over 50% iron, and their reserve is reported to exceed 22 billion tons, corresponding approximately to 20% of the world iron ore reserve.1 It is readily apparent, therefore, why the iron laterites have attracted much attention of the steel industry as a potential source of iron ores. Numerous attempts to remove nickel and chromium as byproducts, have been reported in literature.' Worldwide discoveries of high-grade iron ore deposits in recent years have inevitably lessened the interests in iron laterites. However, in view of the tremendous potential for their gross value and supplies of nickel, cobalt, chromium, and alumina along with iron, the problem remains as a challenge. Much of the chromium in laterites is present in the form of relatively coarse particles of chromite, and various classification methods have successfully been applied for its removal.2,3 The nickel, however, is intimately associated with limonite, and ordinary concentration techniques are totally ineffective. Much attention has, therefore, been given to hydro-metallurgical or pyrometallurgical means. Yet, all the known processes appear to have limitations either economically or for the use of products as iron raw materials due to a high residual content of nickel. Some attempts have been made to pre-roast laterites or oxidized nickel ores, particularly with sulfidizing agents, and to remove nickel either by magnetic separation,' or by flotation.4 It is apparent that any such concentration process would require grain growth of nickel during roasting for effective separation. Oxidized copper ores are reported to be concentrated by the segregation roasting-flotation process,5 in which the ores are roasted with a chloridizing agent and a carbonaceous reductant in order to promote the growth of metallic copper through repeated cycles of copper chloride volatilization and its reduction on the solid reductant surfaces. Examination of a vapor pressure-temperature diagram of various metal chlorides indicates that a separation of nickel from iron may be effected by a similar process. In fact, the segregation roasting of laterites was reported to increase the extraction of nickel by the ammonia leach process, as compared to the ordinary reduction roasting.6 In the present article some of the preliminary experimental results of the segregation roasting, followed by either flotation or magnetic separation, on laterites and oxidized nickel ores are reported. The effects of various parameters in the roasting as well as in the concentration steps are discussed. Equilibrium and kinetic segregation coefficients for the dilute high-temperature system tantalum in iron have been experimentally determined in a levitating zone melter. The equilibrium segregation coefficient, ko, is 0.43 * 0.03. Planar interface solidification is possible up to a freezing velocity of 4 in. per hr but not at 6 in. per hr. Precise concentration control of the solid is possible over this range of freezing velocities. The momentum boundary layer thickness, and the diffusion boundary layer thickness, 6, are such that either 6, > 6 or ALTHOUGH considerable data exists in the literature concerning the stability of planar-solidification fronts, little data exists for high-temperature metallic systems. The study of fundamental aspects of solidification in high-temperature iron-base systems is complicated by the extensive solvent power of liquid iron. In order to minimize such effects a levitating zone melter was used to study the segregation of tantalum in iron.' The solute tantalum was selected because: 1) the ko value was, according to the literature, initially thought to be less than 0.1, thus increasing the precision of the method used;2,3 2) the vapor pressure and is a constant, fixed by induction stirring, 6, the diffusion boundary layer, is 5150 u. At 400 rpm and 6 in. per hr freezing velocity the cast structure exhibits circular macroporosity and banding concentric with the axis of the rotation of the interface. Electron-beam microprobe analyses indicate that the tantalum content is highest at the center of rotation (1.2/1) and decreases with increasing radius as the fine-grained bands become sharper. This entire structure exhibits microseg-regation of tantalum. of tantalum in 1 atm of H2 is small, assuring conservation of solute during redistribution; and 3) spec-troscopic analyses were available for the appropriate range of tantalum considered. Additional objectives were 1) to determine kinetic segregation coefficients for well-stirred zones with constant boundary conditions and thus quantitatively calibrate solute-segregation behavior in the levitating zone melter, and 2) to examine the range of freezing velocities over which smooth solid-liquid interfaces could be controlled in an iron-base alloy under the restrictions of the thermal gradients imposed while levitating a zone. The single-pass zone-melting method was used to calculate individual k values.'

Properly constructed stopes are necessary underground for proper ventilation and safe, healthful working conditions. Mining companies are concerned with providing the best possible stoppings at an economic cost. It is important to consider 1) proper materials, 2) construction that ensures maximum performance from the material used, and 3) keeping costs within reasonable limits for the unit operation—stopping—involved. The authors investigated all aspects of the problem and have attempted to layout a study program to provide information on all phases. Mining companies every year purchase huge amounts of material for the construction of ventilation stoppings. This material by the time it is in place in the stoppings will cost the company many thousands of dollars. In addition and more importantly these stoppings are supposed to confine air travel along certain well defined paths into areas where it is needed to provide safe and healthful atmospheres for workmen. The cost of forcing this air through the mine is large and in general increases as the total quantity increases. Consequently, if the stoppings leak, increased cost results and in addition unsatisfactory ventilation may prevail in the mine. Therefore, it is essentia1 to provide the best possible stoppings at an economic cost. When attempting to provide the best stoppings possible at an economic cost, three aspects of the problem must be considered. These are 1) getting the most suitable material for stopping constructions, 2) constructing the stopping so as to get the best performance from the material used, and 3) keeping the cost of stopping construction to a minimum for a suitable stopping. This investigation is concerned with all phases of the problem and has attempted to lay out a study to provide information on all of them. In order to develop information on the best stopping material available it seemed wise, after con- sidering the job a stopping must do, to investigate the following aspects of material used for stoppings: 1) strength in compression, 2) compressibility or yield under load, 3) porosity, and 4) permeability. To provide information on the best manner of construction the following aspects of air leakage through the stopping were investigated: 1) when the stopping is built of dry stacked materials—i.e., the joints are not mortar-laid (See Fig. 1); 2) when the stopping is built of dry stacked material and then plastered on one side (see Fig. 2); 3) when the

Geological study of the Prony Nilaterite (New Caledonia) began in 1969 and included drilling, geological mapping and laboratory studies. The deposit is the product of weathering of basic rocks. From top to bottom, the following zones can be distinguished: a compact ferruginous cover; ore associated with yellow laterite, containing 1.0-1.5% Ni and low in impurities (SiO2, Mg); an intermediate silicated ore containing 1.3-2.0% Ni and higher percentages of impurities; garnierite ore much richer in nickel (2-4%) but high in SiO, and Mg contents (Mg up to 20%) ; and parent rock, largely peridotites. Distinction between types of ore is essential because the high grade ore (silicated and granierites) is penalized for its high Mg contents that demand additional acid treatment. All studies made distinguish two types of ore, laterite and silicated.

A suspension electrolysis method has been developed which enabled a direct anodic extraction of zinc from zinc sulfide concentrate and simultaneously oxidized sulfide sulfur to elemental sulfur. The investigation was performed in a laboratory-scale electrolytic cell, where the zinc sulfide concentrate particles (chemical composition in weight percent: 61.1% Zn, 2.3% Fe, 30.6% S, 3.4% SiO2 were suspended with or without graphite powder in a dilute sulfuric acid electrolyte. The main parts of the cylindrical electrolytic cell are shown in [Fig. 1]. The cathode (1), a rod of aluminum, is set at the center of the cell. Epitomized, there have been no innovations recently in crushing, but in grinding the trend has been towards larger units under more automatic control with an increased use of autogenous grinding. Crushing Portability of primary crushers to "follow the face" reduces material handling costs. The top size of crusher feed still establishes the size of the crusher; the feed opening should be 1 1/2 times the size of the largest feed. The maximum size of crusher product is 1 ½ times the open scale setting of a jaw or gyratory crusher. Practice dictates use of scalping screens ahead of any type of crusher when the feed contains 25% or more of product size. If required capacity is under 600-700 tph economics favor a double toggle crusher or an impactor. For larger capacities the gyratory crusher is favored.

Mankind's progress is measured in minerals. Man's emergence from prehistory is marked by passage through a Stone Age and a Bronze Age and into the present era, sometimes called the Iron Age or the Age of Metals. With the evolution of civilization and the development of a modem industrial economy, minerals become more and more important. Structures, roads, and machines are built largely of minerals; the energy to heat the structures and to drive the machines is mostly mineral; agricultural fertility is maintained by mineral fertilizers and water; and military strength is provided by fortresses, armaments, and munitions, largely of mineral origin. Thus in the material world, in the productivity of the economy, access to minerals has paramount importance. Every evidence indicates increasing dependence on minerals in the modem economy, particularly on the mineral fuels as energy sources to provide the power base for advancing industrialization. Both the total and the per capita consumption of almost every mineral is increasing in the industrialized nations. Moreover, nations with predominantly agrarian economies call themselves underdeveloped and universally strive to industrialize. Most mineral consumption trends in the more advanced economies have been greatly exceeding population growth-which itself has been advancing at an accelerating rate-and sometimes have surpassed the growth in real income. Some minerals have only recently been adopted or grown to importance in use. Titanium metal did not appear as a commercial product until 1948, and even coal seriously displaced wood as a source of heat less than two centuries ago. On the other hand, minerals have always played an important role in construction. The prehistoric megaliths that form the dolmens of Salisbury Plain are stone; the pyramids are andesite faced with limestone; and many other ancient structures are built of mineral materials. TWO references can be found in the literature concerning the ternary system uranium-tantalum -carbon. C. H. Schramm, P. Gordon, and A. R. Kaufmam reported in this Journal1 on the existence of the ternary carbide "UTa10C4." They also report a second face-centered-cubic carbide phase in the system U-Ta-C, which they denote as "white" phase. The publication includes a reproduction of a Debye-Scherrer powder photograph of "UTa10C4" and a list of the sin2 0 values of this compound. H. Nowotny, R. Kieffer, F. Benesovsky, and E. Laube2 report the complete solid solubility between TaC and UC with a B1 structure. Since the ternary phase "UTa10C4" lies very close to the binary system Ta-C, and the established phase Ta2C with a C27 structure had not been mentioned by Schramm et al., it was thought worthwhile to compare the patterns of "UTa10C4" with Ta2C. The strong lines of the given pattern were indexed on a hexagonal unit cell with the approximate cell parameters a = 3.09A and c = 4.93A. These are the values reported for Ta2C in the literature.3 The correspondence between reported and calculated sin2 8 values may be studied in columns 4 and 5 of Table I. The agreement is fair, but there remain weak lines which cannot be assigned to the hexagonal unit cell. The extinctions correspond to those of Ta2C, but a comparison of the calculated and observed intensities of the Ta2C lines (columns 2 and 3) with those of the corresponding lines of "UTa10C4" (column 6) show occasional deviations. To clarify this situation, four new samples were prepared. The compositions of these samples were chosen in such a way as to observe any existing ternary phase in the system TaC-UC-U-Ta. The samples were arc melted in an inert atmosphere and annealed at 1100°C for 36 to 72 hr. Compositions of the samples determined by chemical analysis are given along with the results of X-ray investigations in Table 11. The following conclusions may be drawn from these data: a) No ternary compounds occur in the section TaC-UC-U-Ta of the ternary system Ta-U-C. The "white" phase reported by Schramm et al. corresponds to a solid solution between TaC and UC. Only one three-phase field exists: C27-B1-A2. (Both tantalum and ? uranium have body-centered-cubic A2 structures.) The a uranium observed in sample 4 transformed from the high-temperature ? phase on cooling. b) The phase Ta2C with a C27 structure extends into the ternary system.
