THERE have been numerous papers in the literature1 on the subjects of secondary and tertiary recrystalli-zation in silicon steels. Secondary re crystallization is believed to occur in silicon steel by either a surface-energy phenomenon such as in the usual development of cube texture or by a second-phase phenomenon such as in the usual production of cube-on-edge texture, (110)[001]. Tertiary recrystallization in silicon steel is thought to be a surface-energy phenomenon in which, for example, grains having a (110) plane parallel to the sheet grow at the expense of other grains in the matrix including those having a (100) plane parallel to the plane of the sheet. In all these instances, the orientations involve either a preferred (100) or (110) plane in the plane of the sheet. Until very recently, there had been no experimental evidence reported of the occurrence of a texture by secondary or tertiary recrystallization that involves a (111) plane in the plane of the sheet, although Kohler reported that grains having the (111) plane parallel to the sheet surface can also grow by a surface energy mechanism. Stickels observed a secondary texture in iron described as "near {554}(225)" about 5 deg from {lll}(211).3 Mee reported that in a vacuum-remelted commercial 3 pct Si steel {lll}(hkl) secondary recrystallization took place in a high vacuum and in pure hydrogen.4 Recently in our Laboratory, large-grained structures such as shown in Fig. 1 having an orientation near (111)[211] or (111)[2ii] have been observed. The arrows point to areas of relatively small matrix grains of the kind that the much larger (111) grains consumed while growing. It is of interest that the matrix grains of samples annealed at 2000°F were essentially the same size as those in samples annealed at 2200°F, a matrix-grain-size stability that is characteristic of secondary recrystallization processes. A torque disc taken from Grain 4 of the sample shown in Fig. 1 revealed a very flat magnetic-torque curve, as expected, with a maximum torque of 7000 dyne-cm per cu cm compared to the typical 180,000 dyne-cm per cu cm observed for conventional (110)[001] textured material. A back-reflection Laue pattern for Grain 4 is shown in Fig. 2 and indicates a near-perfect (111)[211] orientation. The other six numbered grains in the sample of Fig. 1 had a similar orientation. The small circles next to each number were the target areas for the X-ray beam. The starting material was an 0.011-in.-thick oriented silicon steel, (110)[001] texture, containing 3 pct Si. It was lightly pickled, cold-rolled to 0.005 in., and annealed 4 hr at 2200°F within a nickel box (not gas-tight) inside a tube furnace through which dry hydrogen was flowing. The effects of various antifreeze agents on the formation of hydrogen sulphide hydrate have been studied. On a molar basis the relative lowering of Tm (the maximum temperature at which solid hydrogen sulphide hydrate can exist in equilibrium with the given solution) for the various agents is: sodium chloride 1.00, calcium chloride 1.71, methyl alcohol 0.57, ethyl alcohol 0.68, ethylene glycol 0.73, diethylene glycol 0.73, sucrose 0.87, dextrose 0.71. On a weight basis the relative lowering of TM is: sodium chloride 1.00, calcium chloride 0.91, methyl alcohol 1.08, ethyl alcohol 0.89, ethylene glycol 0.69, diethylene glycol 0.41, dextrose 0.23, and sucrose 0.15. Introduction The solid hydrate of hydrogen sulphide, H2S.6H20,1 is in equilibrium with water and liquid hydrogen sulphide at 85°F at a partial pressure of hydrogen sulphide approximately equal to the vapor pressure Of hydrogen sulphide at that temperature. At temperatures below 85°F, in the presence Of excess hydrogen sulphide (greater than the amount required to react with the water present) the hydrate is in equilibrium with liquid hydrogen sulphide at approximately the vapor pressure Of hydrogen sulphide. In the presence of excess water, the solid hydrate is in equilibrium with liquid water, containing dissolved hydrogen sulphide, at a pressure lower than the vapor pressure of liquid hydrogen sulphide at the same temperat~re.2 The lower the temperature, the greater the difference between the decomposition pressure of the hydrate and the vapor pressure of liquid hydrogen sulphide at that temperature. Conditions conducive to the formation of solid hydrogen sulphide hydrate may exist in wells producing a gas containing a high percentage of hydrogen sulphide under high pressure, or in the lead lines from such wells. This paper gives the results of tests made with various antifreeze agents which might be useful in decomposing the hydrate or in preventing the formation of the hydrate of hydrogen sulphide Apparatus Fig , shows a diagram of the apparatus used. The sample under observation was contained in a glass tube 34 cm long, having a 6 mm id and a wall thickness of 2.5 mm. The lower end of this tube was closed- with a plug of butyl rubber. The upper end of the tube was connected to a diaphragm gauge, with a stainless steel diaphragm, a manometer, a vacuum pump, and a cylinder of hydrogen sulphide, The tube was held nearly horizontal, with the liquid resting along the lower side of the tube. It was found that when the tube was held in a vertical position, it broke with ex. plosive violence as soon as it became filled with solid hydrate. Presumably this was caused by the expansion which occurred on solidification of the hydrate. The difficulty disappeared when the tube was held in an inclined position during the tests.

THIS paper reports the results of static tension and torsion tests made on single crystals of alpha brass for the purpose of determining its elastic coefficients. 70-30 alpha brass was chosen because it has been used extensively in the study of the plastic deformation and because it has the following desirable characteristics: (1) face-centered cubic structure, (2) marked elastic anistropy, (3) low elastic modulus. In 1928 Masima and Sachs' using static methods reported the following values for the elastic coefficients of 72-28 pct alpha brass: S11 = 19.4 X 10-13' cm2 per dyne S12 = —8.35 X 10"' cm2 per dyne S44 = 13.9 X 10-13= cm2 per dyne These values were obtained from the measurements shown in fig. 1. The experimental points for both tension and torsion lie consistently below the lines drawn to represent them. Fig. 2 shows the stress-strain curves for their specimens. Only a few points in the elastic range of these curves were available to obtain their values for Young's modulus. Therefore, it was considered that a re-evaluation of these data was desirable. In addition a variation of from 1.13 to 1.485 kg per mm2 was found in the values of the critical resolved shear stress for 70-30 alpha brass reported by Burghoff,² Treuting and Brick: Martin,4 Maddin, Mathewson and Hibbard5,6 and von Goler and Sachs.' Therefore, it was desired to evaluate the conclusion of Boas and Schmid8 that a constant resolved shear stress and not a constant elastic shear initiates plastic deformation. Theoretical Considerations*: The elastic deformation of cubic crystals may be defined by three elastic coefficients (S11, S12, S44,) or three elastic parameters (C,,, C,, C,,). These coefficients or parameters are sufficient to define the stress and strain relations for cubic crystals in the generalized form of Hooke's law referred to Cartesian coordinates. Elastic parameters and coefficients in the cubic system are related by the expressions: C11 —S11+S12/(S11-S12)(S11+2 S12) C12=-S12/(S11-S12)(S11+ 2 S12) (S11 — S12) (S11 + 2 S12) [2] C44 =1/S44 PI It is possible to determine all the elastic coefficients for a cubic metal by measuring two of the three elastic constants: Young's modulus (E), torsion modulus (G), or compressibility (S). A method is described for producing single crystals of high-purity beryllium, Be-4.37pct Cu, and Be-5.24 pct Ni. These crystals were prepared for testing in compression parallel to the [0001] by orienting and lapping to within ±3' of arc of the (0001). Microstrain testing apparatus is described along with c axis compression results for ingot purity beryllium, twelve-zone-pass material, and the above-mentioned alloys. Results show no measurable plasticity for the ingot purity material from -196" to 400°C, although some surface traces of (1122) slip was observed at 200°C and above. The twelve-zone-pass material shows substantial microstrain plasticity at 220°C with slip on (1122). Both alloys show significant plasticity at room temperature and above with slip also on (1122) planes. THE two slip systems which normally operate during the plastic deformation of beryllium in the vicinity of room temperature are:' basal slip (0001)(1120) and prism slip . Pyramidal slip with a vector inclined to the basal plane has been reported for elevated temperatures,'-a but occurs near room temperature only at very high stresses.~ A summary of the available data on the effect of temperature on the critical resolved shear stress for slip on these systems has been compiled by Conrad and Perlmutter.~ It has been postulated6'7 that one of the principal factors contributing to the brittleness of poly crystalline beryllium at temperatures below about 200°C is the difficulty of operating pyramidal slip with a vector inclined to the basal plane. Hence, detailed information on the operation of such a slip system is important to understanding the brittleness of beryllium. The operation of pyramidal slip with a vector inclined to the basal plane is best accomplished in beryllium by compressing single crystals in a direction parallel to the c axis. In such a test the resolved macroscopic shear strzss on the basal and prism planes is zero and (1012) twinning which is favored by tension along the c axis does not occur. Hence, in c axis compression of beryllium the normal deformation modes are inhibited and the operation of pyramidal slip with a vector inclined to the basal plane is favored. In the present investigation, c axis compression tests were performed on beryllium single crystal as a function of temperature (77" to 700°K), purity (commercial and twelve zone pass), and alloy content (4.37 wt pct Cu and 5.24 wt pct Ni). Presented here is a description of the test techniques employed and the gross mechanical behavior observed. A detailed analysis of the slip traces developed on the surfaces of the deformed specimens during these tests and the results of electron transmission studies of the deformed crystals are given in a separate paper.B PROCEDURE 1) Materials and Preparation. Single crystals about 1 in. diam were prepared of the following materials: commercial-purity beryllium, high-purity beryllium, and two beryllium alloys, one with 4.37 wt pct Cu and the other with 5.24 wt pct Ni. The commercial-purity single crystals were obtained by cutting specimens from large-grained ingot of Pechiney SR material, which is approximately 99.98 pct pure. The high-purity crystals were prepared by floating-zone refining (twelve passes) a rod (7 in. by 1 in, diam) of Pechiney SR grade cast and extruded beryllium. Although an absolute chemical analysis of the zone-refined material was not established, mass spectro-graphic analysis, emission spectrographic analysis, and y activation analysis indicated that it contained in atomic fractions about 5 to 10 ppm each of carbon and oxygen, 1 to 5 ppm each of nickel and iron, and about 1 to 2 ppm of copper, with the remaining residual impurities being less than 1 ppm. Further indication of the purity of this material is provided by the critical resolved shear stress for basal slip, which was approximately 300 psi. The starting material for the alloy single crystals was 1-in.-diam floating-zone-refined (six passes) rod of Pechiney SR grade beryllium. Two such rods were wrapped respectively with sufficient weight of wire of high-purity copper (99.999 pct) or nickel (99.999 pct) to yield a 5 wt pct alloy. A seventh floating-zone pass was then applied to each of the rods to accomplish the initial alloying and an eighth pass for homogenization. Analytical samples were taken from regions of the rod immediately adjacent to where the mechanical test specimens were cut; these indicated 4.37 wt pct Cu and 5.24 wt pct Ni. 2) Crystal Orientation. To avoid the occurrence of basal slip during c axis compression testing, it is necessary to load the crystals as nearly parallel to the c axis as possible. Preliminary c axis compression tests indicated that plastic flow and/or fracture occurred at stresses of the order of 300,000 psi; hence on the basis of a critical resolved shear stress for basal slip of 300 to 400 psi, the maximum crystal misorientation permitted is about 4 to 5' of arc. The solubilities of oxygen in liquid Ag-Au, Ag-Pt, and Ag-Pd alloys have been determined in the range of 940° to 1200°C at 1 atm pressure of oxygen using an improved Sieverts technique. The additions of gold (0 to 57 pct), platinum (0 to 27 pct), and palladium (0 to 22 pct) to liquid silver continuously decrease the solubility of oxygen in liquid silver. Activity coefficients and interaction coefficients of oxygen in these alloys and have been calculated. The interaction coefficientscan be described by the following equations: Approximate second-order interaction coefficients (pM have been calculated. The contribution of the product, pMxNM, to In yo only becomes significant at high alloy concentrations. RECENTLY several investigators1"3 have redeter-mined the solubility of oxygen in liquid silver. In general the recent findings1" for Po, = 1 atm are in good agreement with the equation:4 log %O = 695.4/T + 1.086 [1] It is established1, 2 that the solubility of oxygen follows Sieverts' law reasonably well, at least up to 1 atm partial pressure of oxygen. It should be noted that a very slight deviation from Sieverts' law has been reported by Lupis and Elliott.3 Only recently has the solubility of oxygen in Ag-X binary liquid systems received much attention, and only the Ag-Cu, Ag-Au, Ag-Pt, and Ag-Pd systems have been studied. Par lee, Sacris, and zoellners reported that the solubility of oxygen in liquid silver increases progressively with the small additions of copper (0 to 0.5 pct) up to the point where the copper oxide phase appears. Lupis and ~lliott~ have reported that the solubilities of oxygen in liquid silver decrease progressively with the additions of gold, platinum, and palladium. However, their investigation was limited to 0 to 5 pct of these alloying elements, a range too limited to satisfy the requirements of the research program of this laboratory, where the solubilities of oxygen in the range of 0 to 30 pct were required for the calculation of chemical diffusion coefficients of oxygen in these alloys. The present paper deals only with the solubilities of oxygen in these alloys while another paper will deal with the diffusion of oxygen in these alloys. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD A Sieverts technique was employed which involved an improved design of the reaction tube, Fig. 1, as described briefly in a previous communication.4 Liquid melts (70 to 100 g) were held in Norton Alun-dum crucibles. The induction furnace used had a maximum output of 2.5 kw with very fine control. This induction system had excellent stability and the final equilibrium temperatures measured by calibrated Pt-Pt, 10 pct Rh thermocouples are believed to be within ±2C. These thermocouples were checked against the melting point of pure gold wire, and the results agreed with standard tables (±l°C). Each run involved a careful sequence of operations. The sample was heated to and held at about 900°C in vacuum for 3 to 4 hr with the thermocouple in a retracted position. After melting, the melts were usually exposed to a small amount of oxygen (0.5 to 2.0 cu cm) and then degassed slowly for 1 to 2 min to remove any oxidizable volatile impurities such as carbon and sulfur as CO, CO2, SO2, and SO forth. Metallographic studies of the segregation of solute in and near the surfaces of chill-cast alloys have shown that, under sufficiently severe conditions, nucleation on the cold mold surface is followed by the formation of a disc of solid of the same composition as the liquid. This disc is surrounded by two concentric rings in which the concentration first decreases and then increases. The discs and rings are surrounded by a region in which arms of low solute concentration separate regions of high concentration. These arms start at the periphery of the outer ring and are initially radial; they make a gradual curved transition from the radial direction to a crystallographic direction. A normal dendritic substrcture is established beyond the position at which the arms have become crystallographically aligned. When the cooling is less severe, the disc becomes less irregular in shape and has a concentration minimum at the center. The term "Predendritic" is proposed for these transitions. A qualitative explanation is outlined for the phenomena observed at the surface and in the equiaxed region of the ingots. It is well-established1-' that the normal mode of solidification for alloys under most conditions is dendritic. A characteristic of dendritic solidification is the growth of rods or plates in specific crys-tallographic directions. The remaining liquid solidifies later, usually with a higher concentration of solute than the original liquid. Very little is known, however, about the transition from a crystal nucleus until the dendritic pattern is established. It is clear that there must be a transition because the nucleus is much smaller than the characteristic spacings found in the "steady-state" structure. And it also seems clear that the initial conditions must be important since the undercooling existing during the nucleation of the grains has a remarkable influence upon the grain size4 and the segregation pattern. The present paper reports a study of the micro-segregation in regions where crystals have nucleated, and the conclusions that can be drawn regarding the early stages of growth, in connection with the details of the solidification process. Aluminum of 99.993 purity, A1-Cu alloys containing 0.5 to 20 wt pct Cu, and Pb-Sn alloys with 5 wt pct Sn were cast and examined metallographically at the as-cast surface, close to the surface, and in the interior after casting. The alloys were cast from controlled temperatures against surfaces at different temperatures ranging from room temperature to approximately the liquidus temperature of the alloy. The surfaces were, in various experiments, graphite, stainless steel, copper, and aluminum. The methods used for metallographic examination were as follows. 1) The Nomarski phase contrast interferometer6 was used to obtain information on the topography of the as-cast surface. 2) The distribution of any solute present in A1 99.993 pct and copper in the A1-Cu alloys was studied by the anodic film technique originated by Lacombe and Mouflard7 and previously applied in the study of the solidification of aluminum by Biloni.8 The electropolished surface of the specimen is anodized under controlled conditions so that the thickness of the oxide film and therefore the interference colors under white light are sensitive to the local composition. This technique was applied to the as-cast surfaces and to metallographically prepared surfaces from the interior. 3) If in Al-Cu alloys, the surface is anodically oxidized for several minutes, instead of seconds as in the color-film technique, the copper segregation is outlined by a different level with respect to the matrix. This method is less sensitive but complementary to that for the color films. 4) The distribution of copper revealed and mapped by the metallographic techniques was confirmed by electron probe. 5) In samples with high concentration of copper, evidence for the copper distribution could be seen optically after electropolishing.

Compression tests were performed on single crystals of aluminum, silver, gold, and a Ag-10 pet Au alloy, with height-to-width ratios from 8:1 to 1:1. As this ratio decreased, so did the amount of easy glide until, for cubic specimens of all the pure materials, it was entirely absent. Heterogeneity of deformation is proposed to he a major contribution to the explanation of easy glide in slender specimens. For comparison, one single-crystal cube of zinc was tested and showed a behavior very similar to that in tension. Beyond easy glide, tension and compression curves are very similar. It is concluded that, in this range, neither grip effects nor orientation change influence the work-hardening characteristics to any significant extent. (121) and (100) crystals of all materials had similar stress-strain curves in tension and compression, except that the stress level of the flat portion of aluminum (109 crystals at high strains mas somewhat higher in compression. These results are at variance with previously proposed mechanisms of orientation dependence by both Hosford and Kocks. The compression tests themselves are described in detail and it is shown that they are essentially frictionless and produce single slip when the crystal is suitably oriented. DEFORMATION in uniaxial compression does not necessarily give the same result as deformation in uniaxial tension, essentially because the boundary conditions chosen are practically always different. 1) The shape and size of the specimens are usually different, and any genuine effect of size on work hardening should thus influence the result. 2) The grip constraints are usually different and can vary substantially for different kinds of tests. If the compression specimen is a thin plate and the friction on the platen is large, the grip contraints are more serious than in tension and lead, in the extreme, to uniaxial strain rather than uniaxial stress. If the specimen is roughly cubical and the friction is low, the specimen is less constrained than in tension inasmuch as displacements in the contact face are allowed. 3) The orientation change of single crystals is of opposite sign in tension and in compression; it is furthermore different in detail, because the relevant orientation in a squat specimen is the normal to the contact face, whereas that in a slender specimen is the generator of the side faces.' The considerable dependence of work hardening on the initial orientation in tension would suggest that the orientation change should also be very important. 4) Finally, localized deformation instabilities found in tension tests, such as necking and Lüders band propagation, are not possible in squat specimens. This is, for some investigations, a favorable consequence of the large grip influence. Even if one is not interested in any of the effects mentioned above, compression tests are often desirable just because the specimens needed are so much smaller and sturdier. For example, they have been very helpful in the investigation of latent hardening by means of alternate longitudinal and lateral compression of cubes,* and for testing

THE idea presented in this paper is that the capacity of a metal for plastic flow before rupture is dependent on the type of stress system applied-that is, the absolute magnitude of the stresses are unimportant provided that they are large enough to produce continued flow; the important factor is the "type" of stress system. A term called the "triaxial stress ratio" is defined in such a way that this ratio can be used to characterize the "type" of system. The paper is divided into three sections. The first section discusses means of representing the effect of complex stresses on plastic flow and defines "triaxial stress ratio"; the second section discusses various methods of' obtaining complex stress distribution. The third section gives some experimental results showing the effect of types of complex stress on the capacity of various metals for flow. An appendix discusses some details on methods of obtaining complex stresses. I. REPRESENTATION OF COMPLEX STRESS SYSTEMS AND THEIR EFFECT ON PLASTIC FLOW Representation of Stresses It is convenient to have a consistent system of notation that will allow the representation of the entire range of complex stresses from hydrostatic compression to hydrostatic tension on plastic flow in a single diagram. Such a system is provided by making use of the fact that any complex stress system can be resolved into a hydrostatic tension or compression and a pure shear. Consider a stress system having the principal stresses [S1 S2 5 S3]. This system can be resolved into a new system consisting of the three components [ ] and three pure shears. If Sm is positive, the net stress effect is hydrostatic tension; if it is negative, the effect is hydrostatic compression. In order to produce a systematic notation, a quantity that will be referred to as the "triaxial ratio" will be defined by the equation [ ] Sm is given by Eq. I and S1 is the absolute magnitude of the largest principal stress without regard to sign. Table I lists the triaxial ratios for various common systems. They are frequently classified as (1) those naturally active and (2) those active after artificial activation with acid. Fuller's earths fall within the general group of bleaching clays and gradually the commercial term "fuller's earth" has been applied to natural clays originating, for the most part, in the southeastern section of the United States. Bentonitic clays are usually classed as activable and are prevalent in the southwestern section of the United States.l Bleaching clays vary considerably in chemical and physical properties throughout the country, or even in different parts of one deposit (Table 1). In 1952, Hauffe and pfeiffer1,2 reported that parabolic rates of nickel oxidation are decreased by factors of two and four at 1100° and 1000°C, respectively, when Li2O vapor is present. Hauffe 's3 explanation was that monovalent lithium enters the crystal lattice of p-type NiO to decrease cation-vacancy concentration and, hence, diffusion of Ni2+ ions across the growing oxide. After first succeeding in adding lithium directly to molten nickel, the purpose of this investigation was to determine whether alloyed lithium is a more effective oxidation inhibitor than the external vapor. Seven 650-g heats were prepared by melting carbonyl nickel inductively under 1 atm of argon. Various amounts of lithium were added by dropping small chunks into the melt. STUDIES of nickel self-diffusion and impurity diffusion in pure metals and alloys have, for the past two decades, employed predominantly the nickel radio-However, because of the low energy of the emitted particle, careful and time-consuming techniques must be used to obtain reproducible measurements. In our studies of nickel diffusion into copper, we have recently used Ni66 [Td1/2: 55 hr; : 0.20 Mev (100 pet)] which decays to it much more suitable as a tracer because of the presence of the high-energy y radiation from the cu66 daughter. The reaction between CO, and aluminum in cryolite-alumina melts in contact with aluminum has been studied by passing CO2 over the melt. In unstirred melts a homogeneous reaction between dissolved metal and dissolved CO2 was observed. In stirred melts in which convection was induced by bubbling argon through the melt, the dissolved metal apparently reacted mainly with gaseous CO2. The rate of formation of CO increased slightly with increasing depth of the melt, and it did not depend on whether CO2 was passed over or bubbled through the melt. The rate of formation of CO increased with increasing area of the metal/melt interface and with the application of anodic current to the metal. It is concluded that the dissolution of metal into the melt is the rate-determining reaction. THE current efficiency in aluminum electrolysis is determined by the rate of the recombination reaction between the anode gas and the metal: 2A1 + 3CO2—A12O3 + 3CO [1] as originally stated by Pearson and waddington.1 The occurrence of this reaction in cryolite-alumina melts in contact with aluminum was first verified experimentally by Schadinger.2 Thonstad3 has shown that the reaction may proceed further to give free carbon: 2A1 + 3CO— A12O3 + 3C [2] Normally only a few percent of the CO formed undergoes such reduction. The mechanism of these reactions has not yet been clarified. Aluminum, as well as CO,, is soluble in the melt. The solubility of aluminum in cryolite-alumina melts at around 1000°C corresponds to 75 x 10- 6 mole A1 per cu cm,4 while that of CO2 is only 3 x 10-6 mole CO, per cu cm.5 Taking into account the stoichiometry of Reaction [I], the ratio between dissolved aluminum and dissolved CO2 available for the reaction in a saturated melt is about 40. Therefore, as will be shown in the following, the reaction probably mainly occurs between gaseous COa and dissolved aluminum. The dissolved aluminum presumably consists of subvalent ions of aluminum and sodium.4'6 Since the interpretation of the present results is not dependent upon the nature of this solution, the dissolved metal will be designated solely as Al+ in the following. The reaction can then be divided into four steps: A) dissolution of metal, e.g., 2A1 + Al3 — 3A1+ [3] B) diffusion of dissolved metal through a boundary layer; C) transport of dissolved metal through the bulk of the melt; D) Reaction [1]. If dissolved CO, takes part in the reaction, three additional steps embodying the dissolution and transport of CO2 must be added. schadinger2 observed, when bubbling CO2 through the melt, that the rate of formation of CO (in the following designated rfco) did not depend on the distance from the metal surface. The results also indicate that the rate of bubbling did not affect the rfco. When passing CO, over the melt, Revazyan7 found that the loss of metal did not depend on the depth of the melt above the metal or on the flow rate of CO2, and concluded that Step A is rate-determining. In an unstirred melt, however, Gjerstad and welch8 found that the rfCo decreased with increasing depth of the melt, indicating that step C was rate-determining. It thus appears that the rate control of the process depends on the experimental conditions, particularly on the convection. In the present measurements the reaction has been studied in unstirred as well as in stirred melts. EXPERIMENTAL AND RESULTS The experiments were carried out at 1000°C in a Kanthal furnace with a 10-cm uniform temperature zone (±0.l°C). The melts were made up of "super purity" aluminum (99.998 pct), hand-picked natural cryolite, and reagent-grade alumina. In experiments where alumina crucibles were used, the alumina content in the melt was close to saturation (13.5 wt pct9); otherwise it was 4 wt pct. Pure Co2 (99.85 pct) was passed over the melt, and the exit gas was analyzed for CO2 and CO by the conventional absorption method.3 From the weighed amount of CO (as CO2) the rfco was calculated as the number of moles of CO formed per min per sq cm of the surface area of the melt. The amount of carbon formed by Reaction [2] was not determined. As already indicated the rfco is much higher than the rfC, by Reaction [2]. Since the rfC probably is proportional to the rfco, the measured rfco should then the proportional to, but slightly lower than, the total rate of Reactions [I] and 121. In general the scatter of results obtained in duplicate measurements was ±5 to 10 pct, while within a given run a precision of ±3 to 5 pct was obtained. The various crucible assemblies that were used will be described below. Measurements in Unstirred Melts. When carrying out aluminum electrolysis in small alumina crucibles. Tuset10 observed that after solidification the lower part of the electrolyte was gray and contained free metal, while the upper part near the anode was white and contained no metal. One may test for the presence of free metal by treating with dilute hydrochlorid acid.

It has been shown1 that in poly-crystalline strips of high purity aluminum with a fairly random orientation distribution, grain growth progresses gradually until the average grain diameter reaches a value approximately equal to the strip thickness. Recent work at this laboratory led to the realization that grain growth might be impeded to a considerable extent in the presence of a sharply defined texture, where orientation differences between neighboring grains are small. In order to investigate this effect the following experiment was carried out with the same lot of high purity aluminum previously used for grain growth studies in randomly oriented material.' Very large grain size was developed by grain growth at 650°C in specimens of 0.200 in. thickness. These specimens were then rolled to a thickness of 0.050 in. or 1.25 mm—a reduction of 75 pct. In the rolled strip each large grain corresponded to an elongated area easily identified by etching. After annealing for 1 to 25 min at 600°C and re-etching, these elongated areas were again recognizable. Within each area, corresponding to a single large grain before annealing, there formed by recrystallization a multitude of new grains with a fairly well developed preferred orientation. The orientation and the size of the new grains formed in areas corresponding to different large grains, varied widely depending on the orientation of the parent grains with respect to the rolling direction and the plane of rolling. Many areas were found where the average grain size was considerably smaller than the specimen thickness. Such an area occurred in a specimen cut in half before annealing. One half, containing a portion of the area in question, was annealed 1 min at 600°C, the other half, with the remaining portion of this area, for 25 min at the same tempera-Aluminum killed low carbon steel, § which is now used extensively for severe deep drawing or other difficult forming operations, is unusual in that its grain structure, after cold reduction and box annealing in accordance with conventional continuous sheet or strip mill practice, often is elongated, although at times it is equiaxed. Since this unusual structure has been found superior for many, but not all, severe forming operations, recrystallization of the steel, both at constant temperature and on continuous heating, was investigated and compared with that of rimmed steel in the hope that something might be learned about the mechanism of, and the factors controlling, the formation of such elongated grains. In this structure, the grains are elongated both in the lengthwise direction of the strip and transverse to this direction, even though nearly all of the extension in both hot and cold rolling is in the lengthwise direction. The grains are thus roughly pancake-shaped, being longer and wider than they are thick, as observed also by Burns and McCabe,1 and as illustrated by the typical structures shown in Fig 1. Fig la, representing a conventional longitudinal section, shows the length and thickness of the grains, whereas Fig Ib shows their length and width as seen by examining a section parallel to the sheet surface. Both illustrate the very irregular grain boundaries usually associated with the elongated grain shape. A finer equiaxed grain structure in this same grade is shown in Fig Ic. Either the elongated or the equiaxed structure may be present in the annealed product, and in rare instances the two types may coexist in a single specimen, as shown in Fig 1 d. Isothermal Recrystalliza-tion of Rimmed and Alamimum Killed Steel An aluminum killed steel known to have an elongated grain structure after conventional processing (Steel B, Table l), was selected for the initial recrystallization studies; for comparison, a rimmed steel, A in Table 1, was used. Samples of each in the form of hot rolled strip 0.075 and 0.095 in. thick, respectively, were cold rolled on a small laboratory mill in steps of about 0.010 in. per pass to obtain total reductions of 40 and 60 pct. Small pieces of the cold reduced strip were heated in lead at selected constant temperatures for one of several periods of time, then cooled in air. Rate of heating in the lead was, of course, very fast. Hardness of the cooled specimen was measured and a longitudinal section examined metallographically. Isothermal recrystallization curves for these two steels at 1050°F, based on hardness of the air cooled specimens, are shown in Fig 2 in which the amount of recrystallization corresponding to each plotted point is indicated. The marked difference in the behavior of these two types of steel is evident. After a corresponding amount of cold reduction, the rimmed steel recrys-tallizes in a much shorter time than the killed steel and the shape of its recrystallization curve, (plotted on a logarithmic time scale), is very different. The curve for rimmed steel indicates that recrystallization is analogous to isothermal transformation of aus-i.enite in that it proceeds at a progressively faster rate up to some 50 pct recrystallization, then at an increasingly slower rate. The equilibrium of gaseous H20-H2 mixtures with liquid iron-columbium alloys in the range 0.2 to 2.4 pct Cb shows that the activity coefficient of oxygen is strongly diminished by Cb. The oxide in equilibvium with the melt is identified as CbO2. The equi-librium constant at 1600 deg C is [%Cb][fo. % 0]2 = 2.9 x 10-4 where log fo= —0.14 [%Cb]. The deoxidizing power is comparable to that of vanadium, COLUMBIUM (niobium) is finding increasing use as an alloying element in steel. It forms several stable oxides and is removed from the steel bath by oxidizing slags. The specific oxide formed in steel-making is not known although Sazanov snd Shvarts-man,' in their study of its partition between slag and metal, have assumed this to be Cb2O5 It is the purpose of this study to determine its deoxidation equilibrium at 1600°c, the nature of the oxide formed and the interaction between columbium and oxygen in the melt. The investigation was based on the reaction H2 + O=H2O; Kl=ph2o/(pH2[%O]) [1] in which 0 signifies oxygen dissolved in the liquid Fe-Cb alloy. The method and equipment of recent studies2,3 were utilized. In brief, the molten alloy, contained in a small crucible, is held in a controlled mixture of steam, hydrogen, and argon until equilibrium is reached. It is then cooled quickly in a stream of helium and analyzed for columbium and oxygen, the latter by vacuum fusion.4 The solubility of the oxide in liquid iron is determined by visual observation of scum formation on the surface of the melt. Crucibles of MgO proved unsatisfactory because of partial reduction at the metal interface. Pure A12O3 crucibles were heavily blackened by the melt and could not be used at high concentrations of columbium. Silica crucibles were more satisfactory but these introduced some silicon into the melt thus necessitating an uncertain but small correction for its effect on the activities of the other solutes. In silica it was possible to observe the scum formation when the melt became saturated and there was no apparent reaction between scum and crucible. The procedure for saturated melts was as follows. The alloy charge composed of electrolytic iron and columbium grain was melted and held at constant temperature. The gas ratio H2O:H2 was progressively increased by raising the saturator temperature until a point was reached at which a bright film appeared on the surface and covered it completely. This film could be dissolved by raising the temperature of the melt and it reappeared when the temperature was lowered. Under a partial film covering, utilizing bare areas for temperature measurement, the melt was brought to equilibrium with the atmosphere by holding at temperature for about 1 hr as suggested by Dastur.5 INTERACTION IN THE MELT Several experiments were made without columbium to establish a base in silica crucibles. The results are shown in Table I. Except for one run, they agreed well with Floridis1 comparable results in other crucibles. The value of log K1 is taken from Table I as 0.58. This is slightly larger than Floridis' result, probably because of less elaborate safeguards against thermal diffusion. Results obtained in the Fe-Cb-0 series in which no scum formed are shown in Table 11. The equilibrium ratio Kl is defined as ph2o/(ph2[%O]). It is related to the equilibrium constant K1 as follows:

LAISVALL - ONE OF THE BOLIDEN MINES Until the Aitik Mine (2,000,000 mtpy) started in 1968 the Laisvall Mine (1,200,000 mtpy) was the biggest unit of about 20 producing mines, belonging to the Boliden Company Ltd. As shown in Fig. 1 the mines are spread over a wide area. Most of them are small complex ore mines (50,000 - 300,000 mtpy), for which reason the total mine production does not exceed 5,500,000 mtpy. When our company was invited to present a paper, Laisvall was chosen because it is the biggest European galena-mine in production today. The Laisvall Mine is situated in the county of Norrbotten, Sweden, at the eastern border of the Caledonian mountain-chain. The road distance to Slagnäs, the nearest railway station, is 60 miles. The railway between Slagnäs and BOLIDEN's smelting plant, the Rönnskär Works, is 140 miles long. PRODUCTION STARTED IN 1943 In the Autumn of 1938 a boulder was discovered, consisting of sandstone with galena, on the shore of the Lake Stor-Laisan. The boulder came from an Eocambrian sandstone formation, which is overlain by Cambrian-Silurian rock.

Full 24-in. travel gives maximum footage per shift, 360° rotation permits freedom of hole location, a transmission mounted cathead winch is used in pulling rods and casings, and a power take-off is provided for a pump. Circle No. 2 Plastic Pipe Planned production of both flexible and semi-rigid plastic pipe is announced by Triangle Conduit & Cable Co. Rigid and high-impact pipe will be added to the line later. Phosphate ore is being mined at Monsanto Co.'s Henry mine, near Soda Springs, Idaho, for the company's three furnace elemental phosphorus plant near Soda Springs. The finished product from the furnaces is elemental phosphorus which is subsequently used in the manufacture of detergents, food preservatives, fire retardants and other consumer items. In stripping and mining, D-9 crawler tractors are utilized to rip and push-load rubber-tired scrapers. The equipment consists of six D-9G crawler tractors, four Caterpillar 657B scrapers, eight Euclid S-24 scrapers, one Reich T750 drill and one Caterpillar No. 16 patrol plus various support equipment. Stripping is performed on a 12- month basis, two shifts per day, whereas mining is mainly in the summer months on a one-shift basis. The hauling season begins May 15 and ends November 1 due to freezing weather and snow conditions. Annual production is 1 million tons of phosphate rock and 2.5-3 million cu yd of stripping. Stripping, mining and hauling is performed for Monsanto by Dravo-Soda Springs, a mining contractor which owns, operates and maintains all equipment used. The contractor is paid for stripping by the bank yard and for ore mined and hauled on a tonnage basis.
