An isothermal jacket microcalorimeter, supplemented by metallographic, microhardness, and X-ray measurements has been used to study the isothermal annealing of high purity copper after room temperature tensile deformation. The amount of stored energy released during annealing has been measured as a function of deformation in the range 10.8 to 39.5 pct elongation. The data have shown the major heat effect to be associated with recrystallization and have allowed an analysis of the recrystal-lization kinetics and the calculation of activation energies of recrystallization. WHEN a metal is deformed plastically, some of the energy expended is dissipated as heat during the working process, while the remainder is stored within the metal in the form of lattice distortions and imperfections. During subsequent heating of the metal, the distortions and imperfections can be largely annealed out and the associated stored energy released as heat. It is apparent that measurements of the evolution of stored energy during such annealing may produce important information concerning the nature of the annealing mechanisms and the imperfections involved. Some excellent studies of this type have been made in the past, notably those of Taylor and Quinney,' Suzuki,2 Bever and Ticknor,3 Borelius, Berglund, and Sjöberg,4 and Clarebrough et al.5,6 None of this work, however, employed isothermal techniques, with the exception of the Borelius studies' in which only the early annealing stages were investigated. Since isothermal measurements, as compared with heating or cooling curve, have the merits that 1—they reveal the kinetics of a process more clearly, 2—the results obtained are more easily applied to theory, and 3—most fundamental investigations of annealing using techniques other than calorimetry have been carried out isothermally, it was considered important to apply calorimetry to the study of the isothermal annealing of metals. Accordingly, an isothermal jacket calorimeter of the Borelius type,' supplemented by metallographic, hardness, and X-ray measurements, has been used to study the annealing of high purity copper after room temperature tensile deformation. Experimental The microcalorimeter has been described fully elsewhere." Briefly, the specimen to be studied is placed in a constant temperature environment of virtually infinite heat capacity achieved, as shown in the drawing of Fig. 1, by means of a vapor thermostat. A high thermal resistance is provided between the sample and the environment and a sensitive differential thermopile (see Figs. 2 and 3) arranged with half its junctions in contact with, and thus at the constant temperature of, the environment, and the other half in contact with the sample. A reaction in the sample develops a small difference in temperature, AT, across the thermopile, which is followed by a recorder-galvanometer set-up as a function of time, t, and is converted to reaction heat per unit time, P, by the use of the equation AT P=a?T + b AT dt The constants, a and b, in Eq. 1 are determined by a simple calibration, making use of the Peltier heat developed by a small current run through the junction of a thermocouple located in an axial hole in the specimen (Fig. 2). In its present form, the limit of sensitivity of the calorimeter is a heat flow of 0.003 cal per hr. The copper used was the spectroscopically pure metal supplied by the American Smelting and Refining Co. in the form of 3/8 in. diam continuously cast rod, reported to be 99.999+ pct Cu. A small amount of the copper was available at the start of this work and is referred to hereafter as lot A. A second batch, lot B, was obtained later, most of the results described subsequently being for this lot. As will be seen, there is some indication that lot A was somewhat purer than lot B, but it is not known whether this difference was present in the as-received metal or arose during subsequent handling. The two lots of copper were remelted and cast into two 1½ in. diam ingots in vacuo, using high purity graphite crucibles and molds. The ingots were upset several times to break up the large cast grains, and then rolled and swaged to rods 0.391 in. in diameter, using several intermediate anneals with about 40 pct reduction in area between anneals. The penultimate anneal was 2 hr at 350°C. X-ray examination showed no marked general preferred orientation in the resulting rods. The grain structure typical of the two rods is shown in the micrograph of Fig. 4." It was found to be virtually im- possible to get an unambiguous measure of the absolute grain size in the two annealed rods because of the profusion of annealing twins and the lack of regularity of the grain boundaries. However, counts of the number of boundaries intersected per unit length along a random line on a polished section, making a correction for the proportion of boundaries (about half) estimated to be twin boundaries, gave a figure of about 0.015 mm for the average grain diameter. The grain size of the rod from lot A was about 5 pct smaller than that from lot B. The rods were cut into 1 ft long bars and these deformed in tension at room temperature to various total elongations in the range 10.8 to 39.5 pct. A strain rate of 1 pct per min was used. The deformed bars were then stored in a dry ice chest until such time as samples were to be cut from them. Five bars deformed as indicated in Table I were used for the subsequent tests. ALTHOUGH Eoltzmann gave a mathematical solution for the diffusion equation (for planar diffusion in infinite 01. semi-infinite systems only) in 1894 allowing for variation of the diffusion coefficient with a change in concentration, it was not until 1933 that this solution was applied to an experimentally investigated metallic system. The calculation was carried out by Matano' on the data obtained by Grube and Jedele3 for the Cu-Ni system. Since that time concentration dependence of the diffusion coefficient has been demonstrated for many pairs of metals. However, the nature of this dependence has never been fully elucidated. Many investigators have suspected that these variations could be related to the thermodynamic properties of the solutions, one of the earliest explicit statements being contained in a discussion of irreversible transport processes by Onsager' in 1931. Development along these lines has been greatly retarded by the lack of reliable data on the variation of tliffusivity with concentration, the paucity of the thermodynamic data for the same systems at the same temperatures and compositions, and an incomplete understanding of the relation of the thermodynamic properties of the activated state for diffusion to the bulk thermodynamic properties. The last factor has been discussed by Fisher, Hollomon, and Turnbull.5 In many instances where data exist, it is difficult to know which are acceptable. This problem probably applies more strongly to diffusion data than to activity measurements. For instance, four sets of observers"-" have reported self-diffusion coefficients for copper. The average spread between extreme results is a factor of about four, though the individual sets of data are self-consistent to about 20 pct. Thus one or more factors are out of control, at least in these experiments, making estimates of internal error unreliable. The most reliable diffusion data in most systems have resulted from the use of welded couples with a plane interface from which layers for analysis are machined parallel to the interface after diffusion. The layers are analyzed, and the result is a graphical relation between distance and concentration, usually called the penetration curve. Given the same set of analytical data and distances and following the same procedure in computation, different observers will generally produce diffusion coefficients which vary appreciably, especially at the extremes of the concentration range. Experiments must be carefully designed so that the precision is good enough to answer a particular question unequivocally. In the first calculation of the dependence of the diffusion coefficient on concentration in the metallic solid solution Cu-Ni, Matano found that the coefficient was insensitive to concentration from 0 to 70 pct Cu, after which it rose more and more steeply to some undetermined value as pure copper was approached.' The same behavior was reported for Au-Ni, Au-Pd, and Au-Pt.* The data used were those of Grube and Jedele which were very good at the time, but are not considered particularly good by present standards. Furthermore, the method of calculation makes the ends of the diffusion coefficient-concentration curve unreliable. For better reliability, the high copper end of the curve has been checked by incremental couples, where the concentration spread is 67.7 to 100 atomic pct Cu. The implication of the curves calculated by Matano was that diffusion is very concentration sensitive in one dilute range of this completely isomorphous system and hardly at all in the other. Matano's result is confirmed. Later Wells and Mehll0 published data on diffusion in Fe-Ni at 1300°C, which represent a thorough test of the shape of the concentration dependence curve. They ran couples with the following ranges of nickel concentration: 0-25 pct, 1.9-20.1 pct, 0-20.1 pct, 20.1-41.8 pct, 0-99.4 pct, and 79.3-99.4 pct. Although the trend of the data indicates an S-shaped concentration dependence, their curve was drawn to the pattern set by Matano. Their original data have been recalculated for the 0-99.4 and 79.3-99.4 pct couples. Wells and Mehl's points and two independent recalculations from the raw data are plotted in Fig. 1. What appears to be the best curve is drawn through them. This curve shows little sensitivity to composition in both dilute ranges with a strong dependence at intermediate composi-tions.? Similar experiments on the Cu-Pd system are reported here at temperatures where solubility is unlimited. These lead to the same type of concentration dependence for the diffusion coefficients as was found upon recalculation of the data for the Fe-Ni system. It is shown that Ni3Al precipitates homogeneously from nickel-rich alwminum alloys as plates on the (100) planes. Prior to actual precipitation a process occurs which is believed to be one of increasing short-range order. After precipitating the Ni3Al plates enlarge through competitive growth. Discontinuous precipitation can occur simultaneously with the above processes. Recent ideas of the origin of precipitation strengthening appear adequate to explain the hardness changes. REMARKABLY little appears to be known about the precipitation process in Ni-Al alloys in spite of their technical importance. This investigation originated to supply additional information about precipitation in general, this system in particular. Information on the structures and kinetics have been obtained through the use of hardness, X-rays, microscopy, calorimetry, and resistivity on high-purity alloys. PROCEDURES Six alloys, Table I, were prepared by melting carbonyl nickel and high-purity aluminum in alumina crucibles in vacuum and casting into 1-in. graphite molds. All rods were homogenized at least once at 1300°C for 24 hr prior to swaging and this was repeated on the first three alloys after 75 pct reduction. Alloy 4 could be reduced only 10 pct at 1000°C (probably in two-phase field) prior to fracture but 1/4-in. samples quenched from 1100°C were readily reduced cold. Alloy 5 was reduced 15 pct cold but failed on the next pass while alloy 6 of essentially the same aluminum content failed inter-granularly without apparent flow up to 1000°C. The alloys were heated in hydrogen at the elevated temperatures and formed thin, coherent aluminum oxide coatings which provided excellent oxidation resistance at lower temperatures. However, freshly prepared surfaces showed considerably less resistance at 500"to 700°C in air and apparently resulted in internal oxidation. As a consequence, low-temperature agings were carried out in evacuated tubes. RESULTS The isothermal hardening behavior of these alloys at 500"and 565C is given in Figs. 1 and 2. These results were obtained from samples cold worked 75 pct, recrystallized at 1000°C (1100°C for the 7.8 pct Al) and quenched in water. This recrystallization was used to give smaller grain sizes so as to obtain more uniform hardness values and the points represent an average of five readings. The electrical resistivity was measured on 1/16-in. wires quenched from 1000°C during aging at 495°C to give Fig. 3. The energy release and its rate are given in Fig. 4 for the 6.9 pct Al alloy during aging around 500°C. Inasmuch as this was a single run, its accuracy is not known but certainly the general shape and magnitudes are correct. The method used to obtain these results is described elsewhere.' Data for the aging at 600°, 700°, and 800°C of these alloys cold worked 50 pct are given in Fig. 5. Supplementary information from microscopy and X-ray diffraction have been included to indicate recrystallization, discontinuous precipitation and the appearance of superlattice lines from the Ni3Al. The hardness of these alloys as annealed, aged, cold worked, and cold worked and aged is given vs composition in Fig. 6. Those samples which were isothermally aged, Figs. 1 and 2, were reaged at 532°C and at successively higher temperatures for the indicated times to give the data of Fig. 7. These results as well as certain others, support the idea that the level of hardness reached for temperatures above 600°C are equilibrium values more or less independent of path. This being the case, the breaks in the curves would be the complete solution of the Ni,Al. The electrical resistivity versus temperatures for some of these alloys, both aged and unaged, is given in Fig. 8 along with those data from heating slowly (10 deg per day) to high temperatures. Interesting points include the lowering of the Curie temperature (the change in slope), the lack of any indications of a solubility limit and the large temperature coefficient for the Ni3Al. A slight break for Ni3Al around 100C shows up but this is not a Curie temperature as Ni3Al is not ferromagnetic down to -190°C. Metallographically both the nickel-rich solid solution and the Ni3Al appear very much like pure nickel. Profuse twin boundaries are present both

First response to large-scale water flooding in the fractured very low permeability Spraberry sand has led to a new unique cyclic operation. Capacity water injection is used to restore reservoir pressure. This is followed by marly months production without water irzjection and the cycle repeated. Expansion of the oil, rock and water during pressure decline expels part of the fluids but capillary forces hold much of the injected water in the rock. At least with reservoir pressure restored and with partial water flood development, field performance has proved this cyclic operation is capable of producing oil from the nzatrix rock at least 50 per cent faster and with lower water percentage than is imbibition of water at stable reservoir pressure. INTRODUCTION The Spraberry Field of West Texas presents unusual problems for both primary production and water flooding. Extensive interconnected vertical fractures in the fractional-md sandstone permitted recovery of oil on 160-acre well spacing, but they made capillary end effects dominant. Primary recovery by solution gas drive is less than 10 per cent of oil in place. The concept of displacement of oil from the sand matrix by capillary irnbibition of water has led to field techniques which promise greatly increased oil recovery. Free exchange of laboratory research, reservoir information and results of field pilot tests among the various companies has been very important in development of this technology. Five units covering a total of 170,000 acres have been formed for water flooding, and 10 other areas covering an additional 175,500 acres are in various stages of unitization. Part of the Driver Unit reaching fillup first has demonstrated very unusual waterflood behavior and indicated numerous operating problems that will develop within and among the various units. SPRABERRY ROCK AND PRIMARY PERFORMANCE The Spraberry, discovered in February, 1949, is a 1,000-ft section of sandstones, shales and limestones with two main oil productive members: a 10-15 ft sand near the top and a 10-15 ft sand near the base. In part of the field some thinner intermediate sands are oil productive, and others are water bearing. All sands have permeabilities of 1 md or less and porosities of 8-15 per cent. Ordinary core analysis and electric and radiation logs are ineffective in differentiating between oil productive and nonprcductive sands. Sands capable of containing producible oil are best identified by mercury injection capillary pressure measurement and, in some cases, by core water saturation. About 3,500 wells have been drilled in the 500,000-acre trend. Vertical fractures were observed in practically all Spraberry cores. Continuity and interconnection of fractures were confirmed by pressure interference among wells during early development.' Major fractures trend northeast-southwest as indicated by oriented cores and confirmed by five fluid injection tests, by analysis of the pressure transients observed during development,''' and by three interference tests in the Driver Unit Water Flood reported herein. Fracture spac- ing probably averages inches to a few feet. Spraberry wells typically produced 100-400 BOPD initially after hydrauLic fracture treatments. By 1962 oil production had declined to an average of 12 bbl/well/day, near the economic Limits of operation. Reservoir pressure had declined from 2,300 psi initially in the Upper Spraberry and 2,500 psi in the Lower Spraberry to 500-1,000 psi. Partial closing of the fractures with declining reservoir pressure is believed to be the cause of such low oil production rates at these relatively high reservoir pressures. Cumulative recovery of 208 million bbl of oil is 80 to 90 per cent of that recoverable by primary means. Performance of the entire reservoir is summarized in Fig. 1. IMBIBITION WATER FLOODING By 1952 reservoir performance indicated low primary recoveries. Most engineers, expecting serious channeling of injected fluids through the fractures, held little hope for secondary recovery. With its extensive background of research on the fundamentals of fluid flow within reservoir rocks, Atlantic's Research and Development Division on short notice in 1952 conceived that displacement of oil by capillary imbibition of water into the rock might significantly increase Spraberry recovery. Laboratory data reported by Brownscombe and Dyes scaled to probable reservoir conditions showed potential waterflood recovery equal to or greater than primary recovery with a 10-15 year flood life.= A pilot test using three 40-acre injection wells, one central producing well and 18 surrounding observation wells demonstrated technical feasibility of the process. NUMEROUS investigations of chemical diffusion in a brass have been made and the results are collected in several places.1-3 This work has been mainly concerned with the determination of the chemical diffusivity as a function of composition and temperature. In 1947 Smigelskas and Kirken-dall&apos; showed that zinc and copper diffuse at different rates in face-centered-cubic brass, and since then, a number of efforts have been made to determine the intrinsic diffusivities of zinc and copper in this alloy.1, 5-9 Horne and Mehl8 in particular have recently determined the intrinsic diffusivities as functions of temperature and composition using sandwich-type couples and inert markers. Inman et al." also have determined the intrinsic diffusivities in homogeneous alloys using tracer techniques. When the present work was started, no information of this type was available. Consequently, measurements of the intrinsic diffusivities were made as a function of temperature at a constant composition of 28 atomic pct Zn with vapor-solid diffusion couples where the zinc was diffused into the diffusion couple from the vapor phase. The application of these couples to the study of diffusion in a: brass has been described previously.0,7 The temperature dependence of the intrinsic diffusivities was found to follow the relation D, = A, exp(-Hi/RT) and the values of Hzn, and Hcu, were found to be closely the same. It is emphasized, however, that the chemical dif-fusivity (D = N1D2 + N2D1) is a composite diffusivity and does not necessarily follow this exponential form. It is usually found to do so within experimental error for substitutional alloys because the heats of activation of the intrinsic diffusivities generally are not greatly different.&apos;" Also, at the onset of this work, there was no information available concerning possible unequal diffusion rates of individual components and the existence of a Kirkendall effect in alloys with other than face-centered-cubic structures. Since then, two reports indicating a Kirkendall effect in body-centered-cubic ß brass have appeared. Landergren and Mehl" have published a note describing Kirkendall diffusion experiments with sandwich-type couples. Inman et a1.9 also find a Kirkendall effect in this alloy using the tracer technique. In the present work, several aspects of the Kirkendall effect in ß brass were further investigated using vapor-solid couples. Two different couples were used, one in which the zinc was diffused into the specimen from the vapor phase and the other in which the zinc was diffused out of the specimen into the vapor phase. Briefly, the existence of a Kirkendall effect is confirmed and it is found that Dzn/Dcu = 3 at about the 46 atomic pct composition in this alloy at 600°, 700°, and 800°C. As a result of the unequal diffusion rates of zinc and copper, volume changes occur and subgrain formation is observed in the diffusion zone. In addition, significant porosity is produced by the precipitation of supersaturated vacancies. Diffusion in this alloy is therefore outwardly similar to diffusion in a brass where these effects are also observed, a Brass Experimental Methods—The use of vapor-solid couples in studying diffusion in a brass has been described in previous articles.6,7 The method briefly consists of sealing a copper specimen with Kirkendall markers initially placed on its surface in an evacuated quartz capsule along with a large zinc source of fine a brass chips and then diffusing the zinc into the specimen through the vapor phase. The zinc concentration at the specimen surface rises rapidly enough to a value near that of the a brass source so that the surface concentration may be regarded as constant during diffusion. Under these boundary conditions, values of the chemical diffu-sivity may be obtained by applying the Boltzmann-Matano analysis to the concentration penetration curve, and the intrinsic diffusivities may be obtained from Darken&apos;s5 equations when the velocity of marker movement is known. The diffusion specimens were made from OFHC copper in the form of disks 3.2 cm diam and 0.5 cm thick with faces surface-ground parallel to within +0.001 cm. Markers in the form of fine alumina particles <0.0002 cm diam were placed on the specimen surface. These specimens were then sealed in quartz capsules along with enough a brass chips of a 30.0 atomic pct Zn composition to keep the source concentration from decreasing by more than 0.3 atomic pct Zn as a result of the loss of zinc to the specimen during diffusion. OelSEN and Maetz1 detected some 20 years ago the existence of a miscibility gap in iron oxide-CaO-P2O5 slags melted in iron crucibles at about 1400°C. Because of the importance of this system for the dephos-phorization of steel in the basic Bessemer process, equilibria between liquid iron and selected iron oxide-CaO-P2Q slags have been measured since by numerous investigators.2-5 When in equilibrium with metallic iron, the iron oxide of the slag is present mainly as FeO. In connection with oxygen-blowing steelmaking processes, it is useful to know the phase relations in the slag system at higher oxygen pressure, when major parts of the iron oxide are present as Fe2O3. This problem was investigated by Turkdogan and Bills7 by equilibrating the oxide mixtures contained in platinum crucibles with CO2-CO mixtures at 1550°C. It was found that increasing the Fe2O3 content decreases the composition range of the miscibility gap strongly so that the miscibility gap has almost disappeared at pco2/pco = 75. This result was refuted by the careful work of Olette et a1.,&apos;&apos;&apos; who equilibrated their slags with controlled Ha-H2-Ar gas mixtures. Their equilibrium measurements, at 1600°C and at oxygen pressures of 5 x 10"* and 10"5 atm, showed that the oxidation state of the iron has almost no influence on the formation of the miscibility gap. The present experiments were undertaken to check the previous results of Turkdogan and Bills. The experiments were performed at 1625°C in the strongly oxidizing atmosphere of air (PO2 = 0.20 atm) for which no experimental data are available. About 10 g of slag were melted in platinum crucibles and held at constant temperature for 1 hr. After equilibration, the crucible was rapidly pulled out of the furnace and cooled in air. The platinum crucible was removed from the sample. The two slag layers were carefully separated with a small diamond disc, and the surface of the top layer, which may have changed its oxidation state during cooling, was removed. The slags were crushed and analyzed chemically for CaO, P2O5, Fe2+, and Fetotal. The starting mixtures were prepared by sintering the desired amounts of reagent-grade 2CaO . P2O5 - H2O, CaCO3, and Fe2O3. Sintering and subsequent crushing were done three times to ensure homogenization. Molybdenum wire resistance heating was used. The furnace was provided with a recrystallized alumina reaction tube which was left open to air at the top. The temperature was controlled electronically. The reported temperature was measured with a Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple and is estimated to be accurate within +5°C. The composition of the equilibrated melts is given in Table I. For the graphical illustration of these quaternary slags the type of projection suggested by Trömel and Fritze10 was used. In this representation, Fig. 1, the composition point of a mixture within the tetrahedron Fe2O3-CaO-P2O5-FeO is projected into the Fe2O3-CaO-P2O5, triangle (triangle I) so that the direction of projection is parallel to the side FeO-Fe2O3, and into the triangle Fe2O3-P2O,-Fe0 (triangle 11) so that the direction of projection is parallel to the side CaO-P2O5, of the tetrahedron. The projected point has the coordinates wt pct CaO, wt pct P205, and wt pct (FeO + Fe2O3) in triangle I and wt pct FeO, wt pct Fe2O3, and wt pct (CaO + PzO5) in triangle 11. Both triangles are turned into the same plane around the Fe203-P20, side of the tetrahedron. An illustration of the projection of a quaternary point in the present system is shown in Fig. 1. The advantage of this type of projection is that all four components for an equilibrium curve can be read directly from the diagram. The present results are shown graphically in Fig. 2. FOR many years the developers or owners of worthy mining ventures in need of financing have found it almost impossible to obtain such financing under the conditions existing in most other lines of business. High rates of interest and unfair participation in profits have robbed the developers of much of their holdings, and have resulted in over-capitalization and many other like evils. When the general financial condition of the country is bad, this difficulty increases to a point where many operations must cease and hen are thrown out of employment. In 1.934 this situation had developed to such a point that Congress attempted to aid the mining industry. It first authorized the RFC to make loans to recognized and established corporations, individuals, and partnerships engaged in the business of mining, milling, or smelting of ores in June, 1934, limiting such authority to loans adequately secured, the security to consist of mineral acreage. The requirements of the law were stringent and of the 252 requests for loans received up to June 1, 1935, 35 were authorized.

IT is now well established, chiefly through the work of Davenport and Bain,1 that the influence of temperature upon the rate of transformation of austenite to ferrite at constant temperature is represented by a curve of the type shown in Fig. 5 of Tech. Pub. 589; and the reasons for this general shape have been discussed by them in a qualitative way. Thus, the upper part, or nose, of the curve is the resultant of two factors of which the rate of change with temperature is not the same, and by analogy with other like cases it is almost certain that these factors are: (1) the chemical potential, or driving force, of the transformation, which is zero at the equilibrium temperature and increases rapidly as the temperature falls below this point; and (2) a factor analogous to viscosity, or resistance of the crystal lattice to a change in structure, which also increases as the temperature is lowered. Just below the equilibrium temperature this virtual "viscosity" of the metal is relatively low-that is, the metal offers little resistance to a change in lattice-but the driving force is also small, and the net result is that the reaction proceeds slowly. As the temperature is lowered the magnitude of both factors increases; but at first the driving force increases more rapidly than the resistance and the reaction is observed to proceed more rapidly. At lower temperatures, however, the resistance begins to increase faster than the driving force, and eventually, at the nose of the curve, overbalances it, causing the reaction to proceed more and more slowly thereafter. This concept is somewhat, though not completely, analogous to that employed in certain electrical cases where the precise factors are known and are separately measurable. The current I (in amperes or coulombs per second) flowing through a given wire is proportional to the impressed potential, or driving force E, and is inversely proportional to the resistance R of the wire; that is, I = E/R. No PETROLEUM, in commercial quantities, is found in France except the small production of the Pechelbronn field (Fig. 1) in Alsace, which produced 75,000 tons in 1923; therefore the test of the petroleum prospects of the Limagne is most interesting. Under the superintendence of M. Termier, chief engineer of the French mines, a well near Crouelle (Fig. 2) was drilled in 1921 to a depth of 856.3 m. (2808 ft.); at different depths favorable showings were encountered. The well, however, was abandoned because of drilling difficulties. A second one is now being drilled near the same place.

This paper describes some properties of steels in the composition range 0.10 to 0.30 per cent carbon and 1 to 7 per cent chromium. It is well known that some steels of this type develop high tensile strengths upon receiving comparatively simple heat treatments, such as ordinary air cooling from appropriate temperatures, with or without subsequent tempering treatments. These high strengths are frequently associated with unusual toughness as measured by the Izod or Charpy impact test. The chromium content, in addition to imparting the above properties, enhances the resistance to corrosion and improves the strength and oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures. Moreover, these steels have good forging and fabricating properties, as evidenced by the fact that several thousand tons of seamless tubing have been made during the past five years from steels containing 0.10 to 0.25 per cent carbon and 5 per cent chromium. THE national interest prompts consideration of any new source of mineral wealth even though the immediate need may be of minor importance. A critical shortage of potash in the United States during the World War of I9I4-I8 stimulated broad development, which established an American potash industry on a basis so sound that this commodity is not even listed as urgent in the present war program. However, this should not minimize its importance, and the need remains, not only for adequate supplies of the usual potash salts (the chloride and the sulphate) but of all potash chemicals. Potassium carbonate (known commercially as pearl ash) has been a high-cost commodity; in consequence, the quantity used by industry has been relatively small. By a combination of fortuitous geographical circumstances, there is opportunity to produce a low-cost potassium carbonate with the possibility that this might become an important source of chemical potash. The following paper considers a recently developed process1 taking advantage of these conditions. WYOMINGITE DEPOSIT For many years it has been known that a deposit of potash-bearing igneous rock known as wyomingite occurs in the southwestern part of Wyoming at Zirkel Mesa, which is 44 miles northeast of the town of Green River (Fig. I). The western escarpment of this deposit is about 3 miles east of the Superior Branch of the Union Pacific Railroad. This mesa alone covers approximately 3300 acres, and the average thickness of the wyomingite flow is 75 ft. It has been estimated2 that about one billion tons of wyomingite occur in this one deposit, all of which can be mined by open quarrying without overburden. In addition, there are several smaller deposits within 10 miles, so that the aggregate wyomingite in the area approaches two billion tons. This is one of the world&apos;s largest sources of leucite, and the only known deposit of its kind in the United States. The wyomingite (which is in the form of a lava flow and numerous small craters), with the mineral leucite as its most important component, has a mineral composition3 of: leucite, 50 per cent; phlogopite, 15; diopside, I2; kataphorite, 15; glass and apatite, 8. The phlogopite is present in visible phenocrysts 1/8 to 1/2 in. in diameter, but the leucite usually is almost microcrystalline and not capable of liberation by grinding. Chemically, the wyomingite has a potash content averaging slightly higher than eleven per cent K20. The potash is mainly in the leucite, but part of it is in the phlogopite and a small amount is in the feldspars that are occasionally seen as undigested occlusions of the granite country rock, through which the leucite-bearing lava intruded, and as sanidine feldspar both in the crystalline and glassy phases of the rock. INVESTIGATION of the methods of analyses for magnetite and ilmenite in the Otanmaki iron-titanium ore and respective mill products has resulted in certain improvements in the methods conventionally employed. The outcome of the investigations is summarized as follows: 1—Development of a diamond-drill core analyser for the determination of magnetic susceptibility of drill cores containing magnetic minerals. 2—Development of a magnetite-ilmenite analyser for pulverized products. 3—Development of a potentiometric method of chemical analysis for the determination of iron, vanadium, and titanium in succeeding steps from one test sample. 4—Proposal for a continuous and automatic magnetite assay method. Diamond-Drill Core Analyser The conventional method of assaying diamond-drill cores consists of splitting the cores, pulverizing them and running chemical analyses on representative samples. The physical properties of magnetic minerals, however, offer an entirely different approach to obtain similar final result by the measurement of respective magnetic susceptibilities in a properly designed instrument. This instrument is shown in Fig. 1. Essentially it consists of a magnetic unit, A, and of a meter unit, B. On top of A is a slot where a piece of diamond-drill core C is visible. The magnitude of disturbance in the original magnetic field caused by the magnetic minerals in the drill core can be observed from the microammeter. This reading is a function of the combined susceptibilities of all magnetic grains in the magnetic field. The magnetic unit is built of E-sheets of a shell transformer, as shown in Fig. 2. The primary coil and two identical secondary coils are wound around the central leg and end legs, respectively. The drill core under examination is placed into one of the air gaps as shown in Fig. 2. The number of ampere-turns of primary coil excited by 50 or 60-cycle ac give a maximum induction of about 600 gauss in the air gaps. The secondary coils are connected in series in the opposite direction. Thus their voltages compensate each other if no drill core exists in the air gap or if the susceptibility of the drill core is equal to zero. As soon as the susceptibility becomes greater than zero, the balance of the magnetic circuit is disturbed, resulting in increased voltage in the terminals of coil 1 and in a respective decrease of voltage in the terminals of coil 2. The voltage difference thus produced is a function of the effective susceptibility of the drill core. If the magnetic grains in the drill core are unevenly distributed, the voltage difference varies as the core is rotated around its own axis. The voltage difference is measured with a Bren-tan0 tube voltmeter. If extreme sensitiveness is desired, the established symmetry of the magnetic circuit does not allow reduction of the 0-voltage difference far enough. The equilibria at 1 atm total pressure and 600° to 1300°C (1112° to 2372°F) between gas mixtures with various partial pressures of the reactive constituents (principally sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, water vapor, oxygen or carbon monoxide, and hydrogen) and coexisting solid phases (groups variously including calcium oxide, calcium carbonate, calcium sulfide, calcium sulfate, iron, ferrous sulfide, and the iron oxides) are examined. Tables and charts show the combinations of temperature, oxygen activity, and carbon dioxide partial pressure under which the various groups of the solid phases coexist and the corresponding sulfur dioxide pressures. In the presence of calcium sulfide, calcium sulfate, and calcium oxide, the partial pressure of sulfur dioxide has a peak value at each temperature which increases from 101 atm at about 800°C (1472°F) to 1 atm at about 1200°C (2192°F). With water vapor present, hydrogen sulfide may predominate among gaseous sulfur compounds, particularly at low temperatures and oxygen activities; under all other circumstances considered, sulfur dioxide is the dominant gaseous sulfur-bearing species.

AN increased demand for brown iron ore in the Birmingham district during the past 18 months has caused renewed activity both in prospecting and mining these ores. In recent years the production in Alabama has ranged from 41,559 tons in 1932 to 639,351 tons in 1928. During the last 9 years about 83 per cent of the total brown ore produced in the United States has come from Alabama (Tables 1 and 2). PROSPECTING Two methods of prospecting are used in this district: (1) test pits, (2) churn-drilling. Usually there is certain quite definite information on an area to be prospected; some of the indications are float ore such as small gravel or small and large boulders known as "dornicks" scattered over the surface, and ore exposed by erosion in gulleys and ravines, which have cut or eroded through the overburden. Often these natural erosions furnish an indication of the thickness of the ore and to some extent of the area of the ore body.
