As metals and alloys are composed of an aggregate of allotriomorphic crystals or grains, each possessing an individual orientation, the physical characteristics of a metal or an alloy are closely related to the properties of the individual crystals. The preparation and study of single metallic crystals are, therefore, matters of considerable importance. The advent of the X-ray spectrograph as a valuable metallurgical tool has magnified the importance of this subject, because the interpretation of some X-ray spectrographs is difficult unless single crystals are used in these studies. Previous Work The first paper, as far as the writer knows, on the behavior or preparation of single crystals of metals is by Baker.' He describes the behavior of extruded wires of sodium and potassium. These wires, when pulled in tension, instead of showing the usual conical fracture common to most metals, had a chisel-shaped fracture when they were broken. I and 11, Fig. 1, have a similar fracture. Baker checked his results by preparing single crystal wires from molten sodium and potassium and observing their properties. He pre- pared the wires by filling glass tubes, under oil, with the molten metal. The surfaces of the strained wires showed slip bands of remarkable clearness of which photographs are shown in his paper. He concluded that these wires were single crystals and "that the portions of the metal brought into play are cubes. Such cubes, when placed so that a plane through two opposite edges was parallel to the axis of the wire, would allow of lateral contraction by faces gliding over one another in one direction only and not in the direction at right angles."

FOR tensile deformation, if the stress value is defined by the ratio of the load to the actual area, and the strain value by the natural logarithm of the ratio of the immediate length to the original gauge length of the sample, the resulting data when plotted with logarithmic coordinates result in a linear relation extending from the initial plastic yielding through the maximum load and in some cases, such as for copper and brass, to fracture'.'. The normal form of the curve, therefore, is a parabola, satisfying the following equation: S = Kem [1] where S and e represent true stress and strain, K is a constant, and m is a coefficient evaluating the slope of the curve and designated therefore as the strain hardening coefficient. Hollomon² has reported that this coefficient is a function of the yield strength as effected by grain size in alpha brass, and the carbon content and heat treatment of steel. In the case of steel, the value of the proportionality constant is a function of the carbon content. It was further shown in that paper2 and also by Low and Prater -hat, if the power relation between stress and strain remains valid, the strain hardening coefficient m, is equal to the strain at the maximum or necking load. Thus, an added significant feature is that this coefficient may serve as an index of the capacity for deformation prior to localized necking and subsequent fracture, e.g. drawability. The constant K may be defined as the strength of the material at unit strain. Together the K constant and the m coefficient describe an alloy's physical properties as far as strength and ductility are concerned for a particular yield strength and, in the case of steel, a particular carbon content. The work of Lacy and Gensamer4 gives data on alloy ferrites from which very close estimates of the strength of ternary and higher iron alloys have been made. It was the purpose of this investigation to develop similar data for commercial copper base alpha solid solution alloys. Preparation of Specimens Commercial binary alloys of copper with aluminum, beryllium, cadmium, nickel, silicon, tin and zinc were investigated. In addition, laboratory castings were made of a 1 pct silicon alloy and a 2 pct aluminum alloy to complete these particular series. Two types of copper were used, oxygen free OFHC and tough pitch FC. The analyses of these alloys are shown in table I. Standard ASTM sheet tensile specimens were used to determine the usual physical properties of each alloy and to obtain stress data at strains from 0.0005 to 0.01. On the basis of a statistical thermodynamic treatment of the data of smithz2 on the activity of carbon in austenite, a Darken and smith23 deduced that the interaction energy, wy, between carbon atoms occupying nearest-neighboring interstitial sites is repulsive. Aaronson, Domian, and pound 24 (ADP) have applied two different statistical thermodynamic analyses to the same data. One analysis, a composite of the treatments of Darken and Smith,23 Speiser and Spret-nak," and Kaufman, Radcliffe, and Cohen,26 primarily takes account of the positional entropic effects of wy in dilute solutions. The other, due to Lacher 27 and Fowler and Guggenheim," is also applicable to more concentrated solid solutions. The equations which both analyses produce for a,, can be rearranged so that, when In a,, is plotted against the appropriate function of the carbon content of the austenite, the plot will have a slope of unity when the correct value of wy is employed. Since no other constant need be simultaneously evaluated in order to make this determination, ascertaining the most probable value of wy from Smith's data on the bases of these analyses was an elementary problem in least-squares statistics. ADP demonstrated that the wy's obtained from both analyses vary with temperature in a statistically significant manner. McLellan, Gerrard, Horowitz, and sprague 29 (MGHS), on the other hand, have recently made a new statistical thermodynamic study of a,, and have concluded from this study that wy is independent of temperature. The equation which they derived for a,, is: where 0 = ratio of the mole fraction of carbon atoms to that of iron atoms, z = number of sites from which occupancy is excluded by the presence of a carbon atom and the repulsive character of its interaction with nearest-neighboring carbon atoms (z = zb in Ref. 24), and x = a geometric parameter taking account of overlapping of the exclusion shells of nearby carbon atoms. z is 1 when wy = 0 and 13 when wy = Q. For a given value of z there is a definite value of X . In the absence of an equation connecting z and X, MGHS computed geometrically the value of x at several integral values of z; x increases from 0.47 to 8.67 as z is increased from 2 to 5. MGHS fitted Eq. [I] to the a,, data of Ellis, Davidson, and Bodsworth30 at 925° and 1050°C and to the data of smithz2 at 1000°C. Confining z to integral values in the range 4 to 6, and also somewhat restricting AG, the values of z, X, and AG were sought which would minimize the average root mean square percent deviation, D, of the calculated a,, values from those obtained experimentally. Finding that D was almost always smallest when z = 5, they concluded that z is independent of temperature. Since:23, 26 where R = gas constant and T = absolute temperature, and w,, was considered to be similarly invariant, this statement cannot be strictly true. The temperature range employed, however, was small and the interval between the values of z tested was sufficiently large so that the results could still be consistent with a constant The statistical treatment of the a,, data applied by MGHS is clearly quite approximate. Since more than three values of a,, are available at each temperature, z, and X, and AG have actually been over deter mined, rather than underdetermined as their treatment implies. In order to make more complete and exact use of the a,, data, we shall employ the Legendre Method of Least Squares, as described by Whittaker and Robinson. This technique permits conversion of the overdetermined system of equations produced by the substitution into Eq. [I] of the available pairs of a,, and 0 data at a given temperature into an even determined system. Solution of the latter system yields the most probable value of each of the three constants. This procedure will allow a statistically rigorous test to be made of the conclusion drawn by MGHS in respect of the temperature dependence of In order to obtain linear iiequations of conditions" from Eq. The federal taxes on incomes and excess profits are of course heavy. In 1917, the value of the mineral production of the United States was a little in excess of $5,000,000,000. The total of federal taxes for that year, for the mineral producing companies, as computed by themselves, amounts, according to tentative compilations, to about $207,000,000, and the total for the comprehensive group of mineral and metal industries to about $766,000,000, which figures represent respectively 9.5 per cent. and 35.1 per cent. of the total tax paid by all corporations. Because of greater complexities in applying the revenue laws to mineral properties than to most other industries, opportunity is afforded for wide differences of view. The taxes indicated above, therefore, are not final and may conceivably be very materially increased. For 1918, the taxes are expected to be still greater, but no compilations are yet available. Taxes at a high rate are to continue indefinitely. The subject is clearly of gravest import to the mining industry in particular. The Commissioner of Internal Revenue, who is charged by law with the administration and collection of the taxes, is determined that these functions shall be performed in a just and businesslike way. Fairness and finality are to be the chief objectives. In view of the peculiar conditions that attach to the tax program as applied to mines and other wasting industries, like oil, gas, and timber, the Commissioner has resorted to professional advice and assistance by manning a Sub-division of Natural Resources with competent engineers, brought in from the several industries, into whose hands he has placed for solution the technical questions involved. These engineers have a two-fold duty: (1) to devote to the solution of these problems their own knowledge and experience; (2) through their acquaintance with their respective industries, and with the men engaged in those industries, to focus upon these problems, by conferences and otherwise, the best opinion of the country. AT Josephtown, Pa., on the south hank of the Ohio River about thirty miles northwest of Pittsburgh, is the Josephtown electrothermic zinc smelter, which operates as a custom smelter receiving both domestic and foreign concentrates. Constructed in 1930, the plant was designed to produce zinc oxide and to process 124 tons per day of zinc concentrate obtained mainly from the Company's New York State mines. Zinc condensing equipment was developed in conjunction with the St. Joe electrothermic. furnace and commercial production of zinc metal started in 1936. Expansion of the plant and equipment during 1939 and 1940 brought the processing. capacity to upwards of 300 tons of concentrate per day; and the plant operated at peak capacity during the war years, earning the Army-Navy "E" award and three subsequent stars. A postwar plant expansion is now under way, designed to increase the capacity to 500 tons per day of concentrate, with an estimated daily production of 160 tons of zinc metal of various grades, about 100 tons of zinc oxide, and 425 tons of sulphuric acid as major products.

The current demand for copper in the western world exceeds 7 million tonnes annually. The growth in demand is expected to average 2.6% annually to a level exceeding 11 million tonnes in 2000. Copper mine production is currently about 6 million tonnes annually; the annual net addition to mine output in the future will have to average about 190,000 tonnes of contained copper. The industrial nations of Europe and the western Pacific are heavily dependent on copper imports. Currently these import needs are supplied by Canada, Africa and Pacific producers. The increased demand for copper in the future is expected to further weight the trade balance to the Pacific suppliers. An evaluation of undeveloped deposits allows the ranking of these deposits based on total cost of production, including provision for plant and infra- structure investment as well as political/social/ economic risk. Peru, Canada, and the Southwest Pacific are expected to significantly increase exports. The United States will develop deposits to replace depleted mines, maintaining mine production at a level approximately equal to current output, with a consequent increase in copper imports. Chile is expected to become the world's leading copper producer, as well as expanding it's position as the leading exporter.

ALL technical men who are planning to visit the Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago this summer-and all reports indicate that it will be worth visiting-should try to be there during Engineers' Week, beginning June 26. At that time most of the national engineering societies of the country will hold important meetings in that city. Engineers will thus have an opportunity not only to see the Fair at a time when special programs have been arranged for their benefit, but will have the opportunity to meet their professional brothers and to attend technical sessions of direct interest to them. The A.I.M.E. headquarters will be at the Stevens Hotel, and it will be to the interest of every Institute member who expects to attend the Fair at that time to secure his accommodations as promptly as possible. THE Golden Cycle Mining and Reduction Co. operates its custom mill at Colorado Springs on Cripple Creek ores exclusively. These ores are straight sulpho-tellurides, with practically no base metals such as Pb, Cu, Zn, As, or Sb. Upon entering the mill, the ore all passes through the sampler to storage bins, where beds of 5000 tons each are made to insure uniformity in roasting. CLASSIFICATION OF ORES For efficiency, it has been found advisable to separate the ores into two classes according to their line content. Other constituents have their effect, such as alumina and magnesia, but, speaking generally, these are roughly proportional to the line, which, as CaO, is used as the indicator. Class A contains not more than 2 per cent. CaO and comprises about 66 per cent. of the ore treated. Class B contains over 2 per cent. CaO, and comprises 34 per cent. of the ore treated. Typical analyses of both classes are as follows: Class A Class B Insol 56.70 75.90 Al203 2.30 3.40 Fe 3.26 3.48 CaO 1.57 5.12 S 1.79 1.80 Mg0 0.21 1.08 Ignition loss 3.20 6.50 99.03 97.28 The beds of each class of ore are made as large as possible with the available ore as it comes in, to avoid changing from one bed to the other any oftener than necessary. Each roaster will handle 50 percent. more of class A ore than of class B, with practically the same results. This necessitates changing the rate of feed for each new bed and tends toward a poor roast and loss of tonnage at each change.

Most publicity about the copper industry nowadays is focused on the adequacy of ore reserves and on excessive mining capacity. These concerns, stemming from public awareness of actual and potential shortages and oversupplies, relate to production rather than consumption. Perhaps the reason for this one-sided view is that copper is thought of as a commodity which is conspicuously traded in world markets, rather than as one of many industrial materials that serve today's rapidly changing technology. Copper differs from other widely traded commodities in that its real cost of production has progressively increased since World War 11. The reasons for the increase are identifiable by analyzing operations in one of the world's large producing centres, the copper province of Arizona. Another respect in which copper differs from some other commodities is that increases in demand occur less automatically in the case of copper than they tend to in commodities whose consumption is more directly related to population growth. The copper industry's current inability to generate and attract needed investment capital is attributable to these differences between copper and other commodities; it suggests that the concept of copper purely as a commodity is outdated. The key to the problem is better integration between the activities of copper producers and users. Depending on circumstances, integration takes various forms- for example, investment tied to long-term sales con- tracts between producers in developing countries and consumers overseas; common ownership of producing and manufacturing facilities in industrialized nations like the U.S.; and consumer-oriented research and marketing by the copper producers.

ATHOUGH turquoise mining was, so far as we know, the first large, well-organized mining operation,' gem mining, from the Roman con-quest of Egypt until the opening of the South African pipe diamond mines some 50 years ago, was largely carried on' by individuals 01' small companies in a relatively primitive way. Now" however" gem mining does not yield in efficiency or in scale of operations to the mining of other mineral products. In 1926 the diamond mines of the world milled some 9,000,000 cu. yd. and produced 0,43 cu. yd. diamonds, a remarkable example of concentration. The Premier Diamond Mining Co. up to Oct. 31, 1927, had milled 116,455,550 loads (each of 16 cu. ft.) from which 26,-217,144 carats of diamonds" worth £29,897,971 2s, 9d., were recovered. The Burma Ruby Mines, Ltd., operating sever-al alluvial mines in Burma in 1911-12, mined and milled 1,479,845 truckloads of gemmiferous earth for 15c. per load. We of the industry can there-fore, with good grace, disclose some of the myths and also describe some of the primitive mining methods of the, dark ages of our industry. The methods, so far as I know, were not patented, and if they were, the patents have expired, so that engineers in other branches of the art are free to use them if they see fit.

The authors of this paper, in substituting values in a material balance equation associated with a gas reserve and a water drive, cannot find sustainment of what the gas in place should be; therefore, their conclusion is that this type of problem dealing with gas reservoirs is insoluble. They have introduced the word, "cybernetics," based on the work of Norbert Wiener, that further extends this line of reasoning, namely, to the effect that the system is a "black box", and that the gas reservoir and aquifer can take on infinite aspects 'based upon their past performance, to quote the authors. The inference is that this black box is an unknown. which permits in computer programming to subscribe as many variables as possible to observe by adjustment of one to another those combinations of conditions that fit field behavior. This may satisfy those in this discipline whose dedication is to programming, but to the others this is a comparison to the rationalization of the combinational results of the throwing of dice—a probability procedure. In reservoir engineering we are more direct. We learn from the examination of individual we'll and field data exactly what is in this black box. I now come to the impasse that has confronted these authors in their machine calculations. In this I have reproduced from their own production data (Tables 1 and 2 of their paper) pressure vs cumulative gas produced. shown as Figs. D-1 through D-5. A perusal of any of these five plots, for the corresponding fields in the Po Valley, shows the straight-line relation of pressure vs gas produced, evidencing pressure depletion. The point I make is that in their fundamental production data, there is no variance from a straight line that can support a water drive.

QUESTIONS of assaying were explained in the last Book, and I have now come to a greater task, that is, to the description of how we extract the metals. First of all I will explain the method of preparing the ore1 ; for since Nature usually creates metals in an impure state, mixed with earth, stones, and solidified juices, it is necessary to separate most of these impurities from the ores as far as can be, before they are smelted, and therefore I will now describe the methods by which the ores are sorted, broken with hammers, burnt, crushed with stamps, ground into powder, sifted, washed, roasted, and calcineda.

Hoover, an honored Vice-President of the Institute, on the occasion of his present temporary return to his native land, the cordial welcome of his colleagues, and their congratulations upon the noble work splendidly done by the Commission for Relief in Belgium of which he is the head. It is understood that a leading purpose of Mr. Hoover's visit to America at this time is the collection of additional funds, to be administered by his Commission in the care of the destitute children of Belgium. To this enterprise endorsed by both the belligerent parties, as well as inspired by the purest and tenderest sentiments of humanity, contributions are solicited from engineers, especially through an organization known as the "Belgian Kiddies Limited," which this Board, heartily approving its object and method, recommends to the consideration of the members of the Institute. A SEARCH through the available literature shows that the cobalt-nickel-silicon system has not been systematically studied. This seems rather odd because all three elements are fairly abundant and have better than average corrosion resistance; however, they have high melting points, which makes experimental work difficult. Cobalt and nickel form a continuous series of solid solutions and each metal dissolves about 7.5 per cent silicon. Many ternary alloys have been studied and the results have been published in a great many different ways, but to present such data in a short but clear and understandable manner is still a problem. The following pages describe the results of the study of 76 alloys from which the partial ternary diagram (Fig. 1) of the cobalt-nickel-silicon system has been drawn. The alloys were chosen according to the plan in Fig. la by taking definite ratios of cobalt and nickel, such as 70 Ni, 30 Co or 40 Ni, 60 Co, and adding silicon in various percentages. Each section was studied in detail by means of thermal analysis and microscopic examination, but only two of these detailed sections were thought necessary in the point perspective drawing to give a comprehensive picture of the liquidus, solidus and solid transformations that take place over the temperature ranges studied. Complete thermal analyses and microscopic data are given in Table 1.

THE senior author of this paper has expressed the belief that when gamma iron transforms into alpha iron on reaching the A3 point, each gamma grain does not change bodily into one or more alpha grains but that the alpha phase forms first at the boundaries and along the crystallographic planes of the austenite grains.1 To quote: On cooling through the point A, at about 900° C., iron passes from the gamma condition to a. new allotropic form generally designated as alpha. This transforma¬tion, however, is not instantaneous. There are good reasons for believing that it begins at the grain boundaries and along the octahedral planes of the crystals and that it progresses until each grain of gamma iron is changed into a grain of alpha iron, the resulting structure being similar to that of gamma iron. Were it possible to retain at room temperature pure iron but partially transformed, it seems probable that a Widmanstättian structure, or rather, as later explained, a martensitic structure would be observed (Fig. 1), consisting of alpha iron at the boundaries and at the octahedral planes, and of a groundmass of gamma iron. In order to confirm, if possible, the accuracy of that view, a number of experiments were conducted. Polished samples of electrolytic iron were heated in a vacuum, maintained in the gamma range for several hours and quenched in different media. It was hoped by such means to produce and retain on the polished surfaces a pattern which would reveal the mechanism of the allotropic transformation. The samples were placed in evacuated quartz tubes, heated to 1000° C. and held 2 hr. at that temperature. The tubes were then immersed in the quenching bath. Iced brine and liquid air were used first. The polyhedral austenitic structure existing at the time of immersion was very clearly revealed (Fig. 2). This is generally ascribed to iron volatilizing at the grain boundaries.
