A methodfor accelerating the reduction of a metal oxide by carbon monoxide is to incorporate in the reduction system a nonreducible oxide which has a strong affinity for carbon dioxide and will remove it from the product gases. The effectiveness of this method was investigated by veduction experiments on specially prepared powder mixtures of SrO-ZnO ("active'.) and SrCO3-ZnO (reference). Measurements at 750o and 677°C showed that the rate of reduction of ZnO by CO was as much as an order of magnitude greater in the presence of SrO. Under the experimental conditions at least as much CO2 as generated by veduction was absorbed when SrO was present. Enlzancernent of the veduction rate by SvO resulted from modification of' gaseous djfitsion processes. THE specific question posed in this investigation was whether the reduction reaction CO + ZnO - Zn(g) + COa [1] could be accelerated by incorporating strontium oxide into the oxide charge undergoing reduction. Provided the strontium oxide was active enough, it could remove carbon dioxide from the product gases of ( 11 and form strontium carbonate, thus modifying Reaction [ 1] to CO + ZnO + SrO = Zn(g) + SrCO3 [ 2] This study of the comparative rates of Reactions [ I] and [2] can be considered as a particular case of a general scheme for increasing the rates of reduction of metal oxides by carbon monoxide. The limits of applicability of this scheme are indicated in the simple thermodynamic analysis presented in the appendix. This analysis primarily dictated the choice of the system, CO-ZnO-SrO, employed in this investigation. In addition, it was thought that a study of this scheme by use of the CO-ZnO-SrO reaction system would be of special interest in view of indications in the literature1-3 that the gaseous reduction of zinc oxide is prone to rate control by diffusion in the gas phase. The distinction should be pointed out between this and other efforts to increase the rates of reduction reactions through the use of addition agents. Additions of a wide range of chemicals have been tried with de- grees of apparent success varying from slightly negative to highly positive. The reasons for making additions have included the use of salts to produce effects akin to catalysis,4, 5 the alteration of the microstruc-tural details of the reduction process (including solid-state diffusion),6-8 and the conversion of an en-dothermic reaction into one that is exothermic or autogenous.9-12 The means used to attempt alteration of the enthalpy change has commonly been to incorporate lime into the charge, so that heat is generated by reaction with either of the reaction products, carbon dioxide or water. The use of lime in this way makes endeavors such as that of Edstrom and Wiberg similar to the present one. Furthermore, the basic principle behind the present work has previously been set forth.13 However, a detailed investigation of the type of reaction described in this work does not appear to have been conducted. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE From both conceptual and physical standpoints, Reaction [2] is to be considered as the sum of two reactions:

The rate has been studied of the hydrogen reduction of nickel ions in acetate -buffered solutions, using a nickel catalyst. At temperatures between 130°and 160°C, the rate is found to be proportional to the catalyst area, the nickel ion concentration, and the hydrogen pressure. The effect of hydrogen ions is to reduce the observed rate, likely by causing the reverse reaction (dissolution) to proceed. The experimental activation energy was found to be 25 kcal per mole. THE precipitation of metals and lower oxides from solution by hydrogen reduction has been quite actively investigated during the past few years.1 In the case of nickel, the kinetics of the precipitation have been studied in ammonia solution2 but extension of this study to acid solutions has not attracted much interest, largely because of the unfavorable thermodynamics at all but the lowest acidities. For example, Schaufelberger foundg that only 10 pct reduction of nickel could be effected in sulphate solutions. One kinetic study of the reduction of Ni++ has been reported by Knacke, Pawlek, and Sussmuth,4 in which the order of the reaction was found to be one in nickel ion and one-half in hydrogen pressure. No mention was made as to the part played by the nickel catalyst, or by the pH of the solution. Moreover, the activation energy reported (4 .12 kcal per mole) is so low as to lead to some question as to whether diffusion might be playing a major role in determining the kinetics. We have recently completed a study5 of the kinetics of the hydrogen precipitation of nickel from acetate-buffered acidic solutions whose results confirm and amplify those of Knacke et al. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The work was done in a high-pressure autoclavee by the usual technique of removing small samples of the solution for analysis. Nickel analysis was done colorimetrically by the dimethylglyoxime method.' The catalyst used was carbonyl nickel powder (Standard A powder of the Mond Nickel Co., Ltd.) which was found to be composed of spheres of less than 350 mesh. The surface area of the powder was determined in this laboratory by the B. E. T. method to be 1.85 sq m (m2) per g. The catalyst was added to the solution only after the proper temperature and pressure had been reached. Agitation of the baffled system was by a turbine-type impeller, rotated at speeds between 400 and 750 rpm. The reduction rate was found to be independent of the stirring rate, so it was assumed that diffusion in the liquid does not limit the rate. In typical experiments, the nickel concentration was unchanged during an induction period of variable length. The concentration then decreased sharply, and gradually levelled off to approach the final equilibrium value. In some cases, notably at high stirring rates, the nickel concentration was found to increase considerably during the induction period, and then to decrease. In all cases, the rate was determined from the slope of the tangent to the rate curve as the concentration first decreased below the initial value. This is seen in Fig. 1. The rate measurements were found to be reproducible to within about 5 and to be quite independent of the nature or duration of the induction period. The range of conditions used is given in Table I.

High-grade cobalt concentrates were produced from the complex Blackbird ore with very good recovery in continuous pilot-plant operations in which a low-grade bulk cobaltite-pyrite flotation concentrate was roasted in a multiple-hearth furnace to oxidize the pyrite selectively. The cobaltite was floated from the resulting calcine. THE existence of the cobalt-copper deposits in the Blackbird district, Lemhi County, Idaho, has been known for many years. However, these deposits have not yet been exploited successfully because of the low grade of the ore, absence of information on ore reserves, and lack of feasible methods for concentrating and recovering cobalt from the ore. In 1941, when it appeared that World War II might interfere seriously with imports of cobalt from overseas, the U. S. Bureau of Mines started an extensive mining and metallurgical investigation of the Blackbird deposits. Exploration by trenching and drilling1 indicated that ore reserves were adequate to warrant consideration of large-scale exploitation. A process for producing high-grade cobalt concentrates from the ore was developed at the Salt Lake City Station of the Bureau,2 and hydrometallurgical procedures for producing cobalt metal or oxide from the concentrates were developed at the Boulder City Station.3 The Howe Sound Co., through a subsidiary, the Calera Mining Co., carried out further exploratory work, which increased probable ore reserves to a tonnage commensurate with a large investment in mine, mill, transportation facilities, and refinery. Simultaneously, the metallurgical staff of the company, working in cooperation with the Bureau of Mines, further investigated the metallurgical problems. It was the opinion of both groups that pilot-plant testing was required to translate laboratory results into plant operation. In general, the Blackbird ore has a high content of pyrite and some pyrrhotite and contains 0.5 to 1 pet cobalt and 1 to 2 pet copper, which are present essentially as cobaltite and chalcopyrite. The copper can be recovered readily as a high-grade concentrate by selective notation. The cobalt then can be recovered as a bulk sulphide concentrate assaying 4 to 5 pct cobalt, but no satisfactory procedure for separating the cobalt from the pyrite and pyrrhotite directly by flotation had been found. The method developed by the Bureau for producing a high-grade cobalt concentrate is essentially an application of the old Horwood process of selective roasting.4 The bulk sulphide concentrate is roasted to form an oxide coating on the iron mineral particles, and the calcine is then treated by flotation. The oxide coating prevents the iron minerals from floating so that it is possible to obtain a high recovery of cobalt in concentrates assaying more than 20 pct cobalt. Laboratory tests by metallurgists of both the Bureau and the Howe Sound Co. had indicated the optimum roasting temperature to be 425° to 450°C. At lower temperatures the rate of oxidation of the iron minerals is too low, whereas at higher temperatures substantial quantities of cobalt are rendered water-soluble. Because of its high sulphur content (35 to 40 pct), the bulk concentrate tends to continue to burn after it has reached the optimum roasting temperature. Although excessive temperatures could be avoided in the small-scale laboratory furnaces, there was considerable doubt that the temperature could be controlled properly in industrial equipment. To provide material for the pilot-plant tests, the Calera Mining Co. installed a small, temporary flotation mill at the Blackbird property and treated

The influence of the stress dependence of the dislocation density on the overall stress dependence of The steady-state creep rate is discussed. Experimental measurements of dislocation densities and creep rates jor an Fe-3.1 pct Si alloy tested over a wide range of stress are presented which indicate a close correlation between the two quantities. EXPRESSING the stress dependence of high-temperature steady-state creep rates has been the subject of numerous investigations over the past decade. From these investigations have emerged a few general equations which fit most of the available data reasonably well. Garofalo 1 has proposed that for a wide range of stress and temperature the creep rate, i, can be expressed by a relationship of the form: where A, ß, and n are temperature-dependent and is the applied stress. Eq. [I] gives a stress dependence of a at low stresses and exp(nßo) at high stresses, both consistent with experimental observation where n = 5. A number of other investigatorshave proposed a similar expression where: where m and w are in general functions of temperature. Theoretical justification for Eqs. 111 and [2J comes from two different approaches, theories based on dislocation glide3-5 and theories based on the balance between work-hardening and recovery.' Dislocation glide theories predict where p is the mobile dislocation density and V is the activation volume. In order for Eq. [3] to predict a on stress dependence at low stresses with n = 5, it is necessary for p to be a strong function of stress, about proportional to u3 or u4.436 Recovery models of creep start with the general expression:' where r is the recovery rate and h is the work-hardening rate, and then employ a detailed model to determine the stress dependencies of r and h. As example, weertman2 has described a model based on pile-up hardening which results in an expression similar to Eq. [2] with m = 2 and p = 2.5. A recent, seemingly more general approach suggested by McLean is to use Friedels dislocation network growth expression to calculate the stress dependence of r. This model predicts r = p 3,2 and, as h is taken to be a relatively weak function of stress, the stress dependence of i should be about proportional to p3, 2. Once again, it is required that p be a strong function of stress to yield i This recovery model is by no means complete as the stress dependence of network growth is calculated in the absence of an applied stress meaning that r should probably be a stronger function of stress than given by p3, 2 and also some recent work by Mitra and McLean8 suggests that the stress dependence of h may be as large as Because of the importance of the stress dependence of p in determining the overall stress dependence of the strain rate it seems reasonable to examine this relationship in some detail. FOR the production of carbides, various furnace types are available, especially those using arc, resistance, and high-frequency heating. Selection of a specific means of heating depends primarily on the material to be treated and the physical properties of the carbide produced. In the present case, zirconium carbide had to be prepared on an industrial scale as a raw material for the production of anhydrous zirconium chloride. Considering that a rather expensive pure oxide was to be used, the arc-furnace treatment recommended for zircon sands in a previous publication' was ruled out because of the considerable volatilization and dust losses caused by the blast of the arc. For this reason, either high-frequency or resistance heating seemed to offer more promise. Since there was not enough capacity of the former available, resistance heating was chosen. It was first thought that the Acheson silicon carbide furnace would be suitable for the present purpose, but the voltage in such a furnace, in which the current passes through the batch, varies from 220 to 75 v from the start to the end of a run. This variation is so great that a special tap transformer would have been required. Trouble was also expected by local melting of the carbide. Pure zirconium carbide melts at about 3527°C, but the melting point is brought down to 2427°C, according to Agte,2 when an excess of 6 pct C is present in the carbide. This we found confirmed by experiments in a high-frequency furnace. Excess carbon is needed in the batch to obtain a complete reduction. Fusion of the charge would cause great difficulties in an Acheson-type furnace because of the good electrical conductivity of the carbide as compared with that of the loose batch. Also, fused carbide is much more difficult to chlorinate than the spongy product that can be made in the radiation furnace described below. It was apparent that, to obtain a good-qual-ity zirconium carbide, the heat input would have to be well-controlled. The hairpin-resistor principle seemed to offer possibilities in this regard, and a furnace of this type was therefore developed. The advantages of the hairpin-resistor radiation principle have been discussed in previous publications, and a split-tube graphite-resistor furnace," now increasingly used in various laboratories, as well as a centrifugal quartz melting furnace4 of this type, has demonstrated the usefulness of this heating method. The hairpin-heater element has the following definite advantages over a straight resistor of the type used, for instance, by Georges:5 Its resistance is four times greater; it can expand freely; it is sturdier because of the larger diameter, and it has a larger radiation surface; there are no hot contacts that might wear out or overheat; only one clamp is used which permits assembling all electrical leads at one side of the furnace, making the other sides easily accessible to the operator. The shorter element and its larger diameter permit greater concentration of heat. The furnace developed is shown in fig. 1. The box (I), made of 2 1/2-in. graphite plates, has inside dimensions of 23x17x16 in. It contains the briquet-ted batch (2). The box is embedded in lampblack (3) up to the cover plate. The cover plate contains an opening for the gas escape (4) and for the observation hole (5), which permits measuring the temperature with an optical pyrometer. The cover plate is embedded in charcoal (6). The lampblack is contained in the insulating brick lining (7), held in the 1/4-in. sheet steel box (8). The graphite box is set on two rows of triangular graphite bars (9). The hairpin-heater element (10), the dimensions of which are given below the main drawing, extends horizontally in the graphite chamber and radiates freely on the batch. A graphite tube (11) keeps the lampblack from falling into the slot. The split electrode, which in reality is turned 90" against the drawing, is so arranged that the slot is vertical. THE accepted basis of comparisons between mills of different diameter is the percentage critical speed. If n = actual mill speed, rpm, nc = calculated critical speed, rpm, np = calculated percentage critical speed, and D == inside diameter of the mill in feet, then n, In the following analysis capacity, T, is expressed in short tons per hour, tph, and power consumption, P, in kilowatts, kw. Accordingly power consumption per unit of capacity, P will be expressed in kilowatt hours per short ton, or kw-hr per ton. In all equations D refers to the inside diameter of the mill in feet and v to the peripheral speed of the mill in feet per minute inside the liners. ' Comparison between separate mills must be based on equivalent grinding conditions, i.e., same feed, same size distribution of feed, same size distribution of product, and same percentage of solids. In addition, comparisons between separate rod mills must be based on the same rods, same type of liners, and same percentage rod load. Comparisons between separate ball mills presuppose the same balls, similar liners, and same relative ball load. The practical np-range through which the equations apply varies, being narrower for fine grinding in ball mills and wider for coarse crushing in rod mills. The Relationship between Capacity and Speed It is the general belief that the capacity, T, of a tumbling mill is directly proportional to the speed of the mill, other things remaining constant.' Mathematically this is represented by the equation T - c¹ n tph [4] where c, is a factor related with the grinding characteristics of the ore, method of reduction, and the units chosen. It is proposed here that the general equation relating mill capacity and speed should be of the form T = c¹ nm tph [5] In other words, the capacity should be proportional to the mill speed raised to power m, the numerical value of the exponent being 1 5 m 5 1.5, depending on the circumstances. Eq. 5 can also be written in the following forms: T = c, (np)m tph, and [6] T=Ca vm tph, [71 where v = peripheral speed of the mill in feet per minute. If the observed capacity of a mill at speed n¹ is = T¹ tph, the capacity T² of the same mill at speed n² should be T² = T¹ (n²/n¹)tph [8] The Relationship between Power Consumption, Mill Diameter, and Speed The only well known theoretical deduction relating power consumption, P, and mill diameter appears to be the formula of duPont introduced by Gow, Guggenheim, Campbell, and Coghill.' According to duPont, the power required to operate a mill is a function of the mass of the balls, of the lever arm of the ball mass, and of the speed of the mill. The ball mass per unit of mill length is proportional to the square of the diameter, the lever arm is directly proportional to the diameter, and the critical mill speed or any percentage thereof is inversely proportional to the square root of the mill diameter. To evaluate chemically the sample of rock obtained by diamond drilling, it has long been recognized that the analyses of the two components of the sample, core and sludge, must be given appropriate influence in computing the average analysis of any unit of depth. The purpose of this investigation is to set forth what means are available for apportioning the effect of core and sludge on the final analysis, what variables affect the problem, and what combination of applied mathematics will closest approximate the truth under each condition as these variables proceed within their limitations. A drill hole is bored in iron ore exploration principally to test variations in rock composition with depth and is usually directed as nearly normal to the bedding of a horizon to be tested as possible. This practice has a tendency to minimize variation in composition laterally which in any event is not likely to be great. It is obvious that the opportunity for change in analysis of a particular rock is not statistically as great radially in a diamond drill hole where the distance in which such a change may occur is from 0.719 in. (EX bit) to 1.469 in. (NX bit) as there would be longitudinally even in a' run as short as 5 ft. Variations in composition of bedded or layered rocks are usually greater normal to the bedding than parallel thereto. Even in massive rocks, like porphyries, variations are functions of distance. Hence. in either case, variations along the hole are of greater effect than across it. Let us examine Fig 1 briefly to observe a cross section of a unit of depth of a typical diamond drill hole. If we neglect radial change in chemical composition, which we have seen is small compared to lengthwise variation, we can see that if core recovery was 100 pct, the core and its surrounding area, which would be recovered as cuttings (assuming 100 pct sludge recovery), must analyze the same if the sampling is perfect. This is the foundation of this paper, namely, that if core recovery is complete we may assume that the core constitutes as nearly as possible a perfect sample of the ground drilled. Now let us pass to the methods of weighting core and sludge in the final analysis and then develop each in turn. One might employ core analyses only, sludge analyses only, or apportion the influence of each by one of several methods. The most common apportionment is by direct proportion to relative theoretical vol- ' ume occupied by each component in the cylinder hollowed out by the drill, known as the Longyear formula. Another logical treatment would be to consider core and sludge in the final analysis according to the weight of each recovered. This procedure was elaborately set forth and refined by R. S. Moeh1man.l Then to be sure that we have embraced all the possibilities, we must admit that some other method or methods may be devised empirically or by mathematical maneuvers. Should a drill machine be capable of recovering 100 pct of the core in all types of rock, certainly core alone need be analyzed and no complicated mathematics are required; but although some companies have had fair success in obtaining high percentages of core in certain homogeneous ores on the Mar-quette Range, their same methods have proved disappointing on the Menominee, Cuyuna, and Gogebic Ranges where the iron formation often varies widely from flinty chert beds interstratified with soft hematite to wholly leached ore material composed of an unpredictable mixture of hematite and limonite with occasional zones of sugary, recrystallized chert. In spite of numerous mechanical improvements in core barrels, few drilling programs can count on complete core recovery. The sludge alone might be analyzed but for practical reasons this is inadvisable when core is obtained due to the numerous opportunities for contaminating or losing portions of the cuttings. The Longyear formula involves a weighting of the core and sludge in proportion to the theoretical volume of each, that is, where the volume of the core recovered is one-third of the total cubic volume of the cylindrical hole made by the drill, the analysis of the core is given one-third of the weight in the final analysis. The Queen Charlotte gold deposit (also known as the Specogna, Babe, or Cinola) was discovered in late 1970 by Efrem Specogna and Johnny Trico. They were prospecting along the trace of the Sandspit fault, and they sampled jarositic material that included veins from the fault zone. Their assays included some good gold values. They located the Babe Claims in 1971 and optioned them to Kennco Explorations Ltd. Kennco conducted stream sediment and soil geochem studies, geological mapping and drilling of 55.2 m (181 ft) in two drill holes. Kennco withdrew from the property, and by 1977, Cominco, Placer Development, Silver Standard, and Quintana Minerals had each successively worked on the deposit. Consolidated Cinola Mines bought the claims in 1977 and completed exploration of the deposit ultimately in a joint venture arrangement with Energy Reserves. Energy Reserves entered in late 1979, and by 1983, a total of 200 surface and 12 underground drill holes had been completed, totaling 28 600 m (93,832 ft). In addition, a 461.9 m (1515 ft) adit was driven in the ore body. Reserves published by Cinola aggregate 34 Mt (37 million st) of 1.7 g (0.060 oz) Au per tonne. All industry geologists working in the area agree that the Queen Charlotte gold is an epithermal gold deposit in porous volcaniclastic and clastic rocks that is genetically related to a Miocene-Pliocene rhyolite plug. The geologic description here follows the oral presentation made by G. G. Richards, J. S. Christie, and M. R. Wolfhard at a 1976 CIM meeting. Additional comments by the late C. S. Ney of Kennco Explorations are included with the Richards, Christie, and Wolfhard data to complete the geologic set- ting. The attached reprint by Champigny and Sinclair (1 980) provides additional data on the deposit. The Queen Charlotte (Babe, Specogna, or Cinola) gold deposit is located on Graham Island in the northern Charlotte Islands, at the fault boundary of the Skidegate plateau and the Charlotte lowlands. The Sandspit fault marks the physiographic boundary, and it is intruded by rhyolite porphyry at the deposit. Because displaced geochem anomalies, drain- age patterns, and topography suggest dextral and east side down movement for the fault, exposed east block rocks are younger than rocks west of the fault. The east block, which included the ore deposit, is a lowland largely masked by unconsolidated Pleistocene and Recent clastic rocks. Rocks west of the rhyolite plug, on the Skidegate plateau, are Cretaceous carbonaceous and calcareous shale unconformably overlain by a thin veneer of rhyolite tuff. The deposit is about 100 m (328 ft) above sea level. GEOLOGIC SETTING At the ore deposit, the Sandspit fault is a complex structure. However, lithologies on either side of the fault-controlled rhyolite porphyry plug are distinct. West of the rhyolite, the upper member of the Cretaceous Haida formation shale is the most common rock type. The member is composed of dark grey to black, poorly consolidated, and thinly bedded carbonaceous and calcareous shale. The sequence is silicified to an argillite or a hornfels near the rhyolite. West of the rhyolite porphyry plug, but not importantly involved in the mineralization, is a thin masking cover of rhyolite tuff. The tuff unconformably succeeds the cretaceous shale, but it is largely eroded in the mine area. East of the fault-controlled rhyolite porphyry plug is a thick section of conglomerate and sandstone of the Miocene- Pliocene Skonun formation. The ore body occurs within the coarse clastics, the rhyolite intrusive as the western boundary. Ore is entirely contained within the clastics. Original permeability of the clastic rocks was a major control for ore deposition and alteration, and for that reason, the Skonun formation is described in greater detail. The Skonun formation clastics unconformably overlie Haida shale. The Skonun is at least 300 m (984 ft) thick in the mine area, where it trends northerly and dips easterly 15º to 25º. The sequence is about 62 percent conglomerate, 3 1 percent coarse arkosic sandstone, and 7 percent interbedded siltstone and sandstone. Contacts between adjacent beds are generally sharp. DISPERSION strengthening has been studied in a number of metal-metal oxide systems. To date those pure metals available as fine particles (less than about 5 p) have received most of the attention whereas solid solution alloys, generally unavailable as fine powders, have not been examined in detail. The present work was undertaken as a preliminary study to evaluate combined effects of solid solution and dispersion strengthening. The technique used was that of dry mixing of elemental powders with the oxide, followed by a diffusion treatment to obtain the solid solution. The average particle size of the powders used was: Ni, 3.2 p (1nco B); Mo, 1.3 p (Fansteel Metallurgical Corp.); and y alumina, 0.027 \i (G. L. Cabot, Inc.). The particle size of the metal powders was determined by Fisher subsieve measurements while the size of the alumina was calculated from a surface area determination. Prior diffusion studies on small compacts pressed from mixtures of nickel and molybdenum powders with and without 7.5 vol pct A1203 indicated that diffusion was complete after sintering for 100 hr at 1800" , or 50 hr at 2250", or 20 hr at 2550° F. The progress of diffusion was followed by microstructural examination and micro-hardness measurements. Two observations made during the diffusion experiments were: 1) That diffusion proceeded faster in the presence of alumina, confirming similar findings by Seith and Loepman on "SAP'';4 2) That diffusion at temperatures above 1800°F resulted in coarsening of the alumina in agreement with results of other authors reporting on the growth of alumina in nickel above 1800"F. Similar experiments in the Ni-Cr system using 6 and 20 p Cr powders of 0.7 and 0.025 pct 0, respectively, did not result in significant solid solution formation even after long time exposures at 2550° F. It must be concluded that chromium oxide films around individual particles interfere with normal diffusion. A nickel alloy containing 5 wt pct Mo and 7.5 vol pct alumina was fabricated by dry mixing of powders, isostatically compacting at 30,000 psi, diffusing for 120 hr in dry hydrogen at 1800" F, and extruding at 1950"~ with a 30 to 1 reduction of area ratio. The world's production of petroleum during 1926 is estimated at 1,096,000,000 bbl., an increase of about 29,000,000 from that of 1925 and somewhat larger than the average during the last 4 years, which is about 1,049,000,000 bbl. The daily average during the year may be estimated at 3,000,000 bbl. of which the United States produced 2,123,000 and other countries 877,000. The outstanding developments during the year have been the decline of the Mexican fields, the counterbalancing of this decline by the increase in Venezuelan and Russian production, and increases in Roumania and Colombia. During 1926 the United States, Mexico and Russia retained their relative positions as the three leading producers, while Venezuela probably outranked Persia for fourth place, Roumania passed Dutch East Indies for sixth, and Colombia moved from sixteenth to the eleventh position. It further appears that should present conditions develop normally throughout 1927, it is not improbable that Mexico will be outranked by Russia as the second oil-producing country and that the increased yield of Colombia will place this country in the eighth or ninth position, and ahead of India. The United States and Mexico should produce in 1926 about 79 per cent. of the world's total and the aggregate of the seven leading countries should be close to 95 per cent. of the total. It is interesting to note that about 85 per cent. of the total comes from fields on the American continent, the United States accounting for about 71 per cent., and Spanish-American countries and Trinidad for 13 per cent. Production of countries other than the United States and Mexico has gradually increased during the last four years and now represents about 21 per cent. of the total. The United States easily retains its long standing leadership with a total yield of 775,000,000 bbl., or an average daily yield of 2,123,000, representing about 71 per cent. of the total, which is about equal to that of the previous year. An increase in production of about 11,000,000 bbl. is indicated by the statistics so far available. It will be noted that the American production in the last 4 years has averaged about 746,000,000 bbl. yearly and that this uniformity, as well as the marked increases

The classification and preparation of non-ferrous scrap mctals is a subject of interest to every individual and corporation that employs in its processes of manufacture non-ferrous metals and alloys and accurnulates in such manufacture scrap from these materials for disposition in the form of turnings, borings, short ends, punchings, clippings, grindings, washings, etc. All too frequently the disposition of such scrap is left to indivitluals who have no knowledge of the subject either from a metallurgical or a commercial standpoint, or both. Much money is thus lost whicli with a little more intelligent effort might be saved, and in this day of fierce competition and small profits such an opportunity cannot be ignored. The Mineral Resources of the United States for the year 1925, the latest issue available (Part 1, page 221), gives the secondary non-ferrous metals of certain classes recovered in the United States for the year 1924 to 1925 as shown in Table 1. The figures are tabulated simply to give the reader some idea of the scope of the secondary non-ferrous metal industry. Approximately 900,000 tons of an annual value of $244,000,000 were recovered in the year cited. In 1916 (again using thc Mineral Resources of the United States as authority) the tonnage reclaimed was approximately 632,000 tons and the value, because of the high prices for metals prevailing at that time, amounted to $265,000,000. It is not the purpose of this paper to discuss smelting and refining operations or the feasibility of an organization, primarily engaged in some other activity, conducting smelting and refining operations to convert its own non-ferrous scrap metals and alloys. The classification and preparation of these non-ferrous materials is a preliminary step, regardless of what subsequent operations the material may pass through or where these operations may be conducted. For that reason the subject can he readily discussed without any reference to subsequent activities. Space must be provided, with suitable handling facilities, scales and the necessary storage bins where the material may be accumulated. THE objects of this paper are: 1. To give cost data on drilling obtained at the North Star mine in California; 2. To describe the methods of testing drills employed there, giving the results of shop tests, and the correlated data obtained underground; 3. To demonstrate that these tests form a satisfactory basis upon which to judge rock drills. The rock at this mine is either close-grained diabase in the upper levels, or tough grano-diorite in the lower levels. The vein, which has an average dip of 23°, consists of about 5 ft. of "formation" lying between walls of unaltered country rock. Of the 5 ft., solid quartz and stringers make up 18 in. of pay ore. The formation, which consists of but slightly altered country rock, is almost as hard as the unaltered walls. From 4 to 42 ft. is sent to the mill. One-third of the holes are drilled in the quartz; two-thirds in the formation. The holes are about 42 ft. deep and break on the average of 1.15 tons per hole. The average number of holes per stope drill shift is at present 5.65. The number of drill shifts throughout the mine in 1913, was 18,679, and the cost of labor for drilling, power, supplies, upkeep of machines and air lines, tool sharpening, and distribution, amounted to 33 per cent. of total mining expense. To do this work there are in commission 43 No. 12A, three No. 17V and eight No. 16V Waugh stopers, three Jackhamers, two Waugh pluggers, and 17 No. 8 ,and two No. 7 water Leyners. For the past three years a record has been kept of the repairs on each machine and number of shifts operated by it. The figures given in Tables I and II for the cost of repairs per drill shift have been taken from this record. The underground air pressure is about 90 lb. The air consumption per drill shift was measured by, aerometers. The leakage of pipe lines between compressor and meter is not included. From the number of pieces of steel sharpened for each type of drill during the year the average used per drill shift has been ascertained. For other supplies the figures given represent a year's average.

COKE with low phosphorus content is required by some of the electrometallurgical and chemical plants recently attracted to the Pacific Northwest by the hydroelectric power available from Bonneville and Grand Coulee dams. Shipping such coke into the area from eastern points involves a high freight charge, and during wartime consumes precious rail and ship-bottom space, so it is highly desirable to produce coke from the coking coals of Washington to meet the requirements of these industries. Although coke has been made from Washington coals since 1884, little has been known about their phosphorus contents or about the extent to which phosphorus could be reduced by cleaning. An investigation was undertaken, therefore, to determine the manner in which phosphorus occurs in the coking coals of Washington and its amenability to removal by ordinary coal-washing methods. PREVIOUS WORK Phosphorus is a deleterious element in coke used for numerous metallurgical processes, including the production of pig iron, yet comparatively little published information is available on the occurrence and elimination of phosphorus in any of the coals of this country. A variation from 0.009 to 0.062 per cent phosphorus in various horizons of the Pittsburgh bed in the Connellsville region of Pennsylania has been reported,1 and a reduction in phosphorus content from 0.020 per cent in the raw coal to 0.018 per cent in the washed coal was obtained in washing coal from the same bed in the Pittsburgh area;2 the latter figures represent average analyses for a year's operation of the washery on about 800,000 tons of coal. A reduction in phosphorus content from 0.018 to 0.011 per cent in washing coal from the Pittsburgh bed at another washery was observed, and the same report provides data on the phosphorus reduction obtained by separating 10 other coals on a bath of 1.35 specific gravity.3 European investigators have been especially active in correlating phosphorus content with petrographic analysis; fusain and durain generally contain the highest percentage of phosphorus, but this relationship is not universal.4 Some of these investigators have found that phosphorus is removed in the coal-washing process,5 but others have observed that the clean coal contained as much or even more phosphorus than the raw coal.6

Previous to the war, this country depended on Europe for its supply of a number of alloys of great importance in the manufacture of electrical apparatus and equipment. When this source was cut off shortly after the beginning of hostilities and the small stocks in the United States were exhausted, either inferior substitutes had to be used or the manufacture of the apparatus suspended. Since electrical equipment was of primary importance in the prosecution of the war, the substitutes had to be used until the composition and processes of manufacture of the alloys could be determined. Included among these alloys was one generally known as manganin, which is composed chiefly of copper and manganese and which, beside having a low-temperature coefficient of resistance, has a low thermal electromotive force against copper. These qualities make it valuable for the manufacture of electrical instruments and machines in which it is used in the shape of wire, rod, and strip. As a result of these circumstances, an investigation was started to determine how manganin could be made on a commercial basis so that a product of uniform quality and the necessary electrical characteristics could be produced. The object was to procure an alloy with temperature coefficient of resistance not greater than 1 X 1X per " C. and a thermal e.m.f. against copper no greater than that of the imported material. It is characteristic of manganin that the temperature-resistance curve is not a straight line but has a peak, which varies in position with different samples; it is most desirable, however, to have it at a temperature of 25' C. if possible. The coefficients of manganin from all records available ranged from a large negative to a large positive value. The composition as reported by different authorities is given in Table I. Prof. Matthew A. Hunter, of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, made up a number of small melts of manganin in a graphite crucible and the one that he reported as having the best cocfficient gave the following analysis: Copper, 83.6 per cent.; nickel 2.5 per cent.; manganese, 13.6 per cent.; iron, 0.3 per cent. An analysis of a sample of German manganin gave the following: Copper, 82.6 per cent.; nickel, 3.8 pcr cent.; manganese, 12.8 per cent.; iron 0.7 per cent.

THE preferred orientations, or textures, resulting from many of the various methods for testing and forming metals have been the subject of numerous investigations.1,2* Despite this large amount of work, however, only a few limited studies have been made of the texture that is developed by torsional deformation. Ono3 found that in severely twisted wires of copper and aluminum a [Ill] direction lies parallel and a [1101 direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the wire. Sachs and Schiebold4 have reported that a double-fiber texture exists in a twisted aluminum wire with both the [Ill] and [loo] directions parallel to the axis of the wire. Twisted iron wires have also been examined by Ono.8 Both the [1101 and [1121 directions were reported as parallel to the axis of the wire. Goss5 concluded from a study of twisted rods of a low-carbon steel that the preferred orientation existing at fracture is quite complex, but that many grains have a [1101 direction parallel to the axis of the wire. In addition to the earlier experimental work, some suggestions have been made about the possible nature of the torsion texture. These suggestions are based on the results of many experiments which indicate that the cold-working texture of a particular metal is largely determined by the geometrical change in shape that the metal undergoes during plastic deformation.1,6 Hibbard and Yen7 have considered the problem of deformation textures and have presented an analysis which is able to explain why equivalent changes in shape should yield similar textures. Therefore, a knowledge of the principal strains associated with torsional deformation would seem helpful in the interpretation of the torsion texture. The necessary analysis has been made of the state of strain in an element of metal lying in the surface of a cylindrical rod or tube that has been subjected to pure torsion.8,9 This analysis shows that the directions of the principal normal strains rotate continuously within a torsion specimen while it is being twisted. After the first infinitesimal amount of twisting, these directions make angles of 45" with the longitudinal axis of the bar. They rotate from this position as twisting proceeds, and after an infinite amount of twisting, the direction of the principal tensile strain is perpendicular, and the direction

Front Range, Colorado: The majority of the rocks comprising the Front Range of Colorado are pre-Cambrian schists, gneisses, and intrusives which have been elevated to form part of the Southern Rocky Mountain physiographic province. The region is noted mainly for its production of gold and silver, but ores of tungsten, fluorspar, uranium, copper, and iron have been worked. Geological literature1-' describes pitchblende and other radioactive minerals occurring at Jamestown, Boulder County; Central City, Gilpin County; and Lawson, Clear Creek County (fig. 1). As far as the writer is aware, uranium has been found only in the portion northeast of Lawson. Silver Deposits at Caribou Hill: The historic silver deposits of Caribou Hill, located approximately half way between Jamestown and Central City, and 35 miles in a straight line northwest of Denver, appeared particularly intriguing as an area to prospect for uranium for the following reasons: here exists an isolated group of high-grade silver veins in the center of a mining district containing occurrences of uranium, and, in two of the well-known uranium deposits of the world, those at Great Bear Lake, Canada, and Joachimsthal, Czechoslovakia, uranium is associated with silver in similar fissure veins. An exploration program, conducted in the spring of 1945, directed special attention to Caribou Hill and was rewarded with the discovery of heavy, canary-yellow stained specimens of'pitchblende. The veins are confined to shear zones cutting a north-south, elongated quartz-monzonite stock of Tertiary (?) age lying in the axis of a major anticline of the Idaho Springs biotite schist, the oldest pre-Cambrian formation in the district. The stock is one and three-quarter miles long by more than a mile wide, and Caribou Hill is approximately at its center. The ore zones vary in width from a few inches to 15 ft, and one structure has been traced for a length of over 4000 ft. The ore minerals are galena, sphalerite, ruby silver, native silver, chalcopyrite, pyrite, and pitchblende. They occur most common-

The actual procedure in estimating depth of overburden from magnetic observations made on the surface will vary with the form of the deposit and any theoretical discussion will apply only so far as the form of the deposit conforms to the mathematical premises on which the theory is based. Since the shapes of natural deposits in the field cannot be expressed rigorously in mathematical form, the best that can be done is to assume some simple form and deduce results. Fortunately many small variations in form produce only slight changes in the estimated depth of overburden, therefore the methods have a definite practical value. For the theoretical treatment, magnetic ore deposits may be divided roughly into three classes, depending upon whether the magnetic anomalies may be considered to arise from (1) a single magnetic pole, (2) a dike or (3) a magnetic doublet. Particular cases, falling under one or other of these classes, have been discussed by different authors.1"4 In general, it may be stated that when the magnetic effects as measured on the surface are due only to one pole of the body, the other pole being so remote that its effect may be neglected, the resultant anomaly F at any point will vary as the inverse square of the distance r of the point from the pole, which may be expressed mathematically by F = k/r2, where k is a constant. When the deposit occurs in the form of a long, thin dike, the resultant anomaly will be of the form F = k'/r and when the deposit is in the shape of a lens, so that both poles have an appreciable effect on the surface, the result will be similar to that caused by a magnetic doublet, and the form will be F = k'/r3. The particular class under which a deposit falls may be deduced from the results of the magnetic survey. The second class is readily found, but there may be difficulty in deciding between the first and third. Isody-namic contours of both the vertical and horizontal anomalies will often be a good guide in making a correct decision. The correctness of the theoretical calculations may be checked in two ways. The first is to make laboratory models of various known shapes and pole distributions, to calculate the anomalies to be expected
