In this paper it is impossible to more than touch on many of the commercial alloys of iron, chromium, and carbon, therefore the discussion is confined to the properties of some of the less well-known alloys with upwards of 20-per cent. chromium. The discussion has been based largely on the strictly engineering aspects of the alloys. Chromium has well-defined effects when added to the iron-carbon system. These effects depend on the amount of chromium added and on the composition of the iron-carbon alloy to which the addition is made, i.e. whether low- or high-carbon steel, cast iron, etc. In the case of the low-carbon steels, the chromium addition, when not in excess of several per cent., appears to exert an influence on the properties by its influence on the critical range. In the higher chromium alloys, the physical properties are influenced chiefly by the formation of new complexes, such as iron-chromium solid solutions and, with higher carbon contents, iron-chromium carbides of great hardness. Examination of the published data1 on the critical range phenomena of chromium-bearing steels up to several per cent. chromium indicates an agreement on the following points:

Nickel has always been a fruitful mother of problems. Previous to the year 1906 nickel was regarded as an element replacing iron in copper-mattes, and it was believed that the same laws which governed the elimination of iron could be applied to nickel. This conception has lately undergone a complete change, and nickel in all its stages is now regarded as an element replacing copper; in other words, copper-nickel is considered not as two elements, but as one metal. When we commenced our investigations on Monel metal we made a great many experiment* on the conversion of mattes, both high copper and high nickel. We studied closely the composition of the mattes and the changes produced by the blow. We found in all cases certain agreements which me believe are due to some law. Briefly stated, our conclusions are as follows : 1. Nickel is not an element replacing iron in matte. 2. Nickel-copper alloys act in the matte-blow like one metal. 3. Nickel-copper alloys follow, during the matte-blow, exactly the same laws that govern the behavior of copper alone. This brings up the question: What are the laws governing the production of metallic copper, and what are the relations of copper to sulphur and iron during the Bessemer blow?

The problems for development are next four: 1) There were no outcrop of the coal bearing strata, but the development was instituted against the deep coal seam occurrence at 800 m below the surface. 2) In order to the coal seams occured the deep level from the surface, threr had very difficult problems, i.e. temperature, earth pressure, methane etc. The countermeasure to solved them, were foundation of the development. 3) The construction was afflict with the inundation in high pressure, due to cement grouting and excavating alternately, overcame the difficulties. 4) The construction was finished by the encourage of national investment, in spite of the enterprise was weaken constitution from the energy revolution since 1960's. The positions of twin reflections in electron-dijjcraction patterns obtained from thin metal foils may he calculated for any twin in any crystal structure by means of an elementary application of vector algebra, General equations for the four classical orientation relationships are presented using the superscript and subscript notation of the tensor calculus, which is briefly described. As an example of the application of these expressions, the case of twinned rhomhohedral crystals, and hence as a special cased twinned cubic crystals, is examined. CONSIDERABLE interest has recently been shown in the interpretation of electron-diffraction patterns obtained from twinned regions of thin metal foils. In the present paper, it is shown that the necessary information may be obtained directly for all twins in any crystal structure by means of a very elementary application of vector algebra. The equations involved are most conveniently presented by making use of the very powerful superscript and subscript notation of the tensor calculus. The use of this notation will first be described and then applied to the problem of calculating diffraction patterns for any twinned crystal. Finally, as an example of the application of the method, the specific case of twinned rhombohedra1 crystals will be considered.

The phase identification results on several Mg-base alloys are presented. These results have been correlated with strength data and microstructural studies to indicate that carbide dispersion may contribute significantly to raising the recrystallization temperature and strength of Mo alloys. Evidence is presented to show that the degree of carbide dispersion, and hence the extent of strengthening, is governed by the "metal/carbon" ratio which, in turn, depends on both the carbon content and the presence of stable -carbide-forming alloying elements. IN recent years, Mo-base alloys containing small additions of C, Ti, and/or Zr have been developed, which exhibit much higher recrystallization temperature and strength than those of unalloyed Mo. The superiority of these alloys undoubtedly results from simultaneous operation of more than one strengthening mechanism. In the present paper, the strengthening effect of carbide dispersion will be discussed. Although the role of carbide dispersion is being increasingly recognized, the nature of the carbides has, to the author's knowledge, not been well es- tablished. In Table I are presented some of the phase identification results on representative Mo alloys. These results have been obtained by X-ray diffraction of residues electrolytically extracted from an ethyl alcohol solution containing 7 pct HC1.

Infrared spectroscopy, employing the internal reflection method in conjunction with solvent extraction techniques, was used to study surface reactions between aqueous potassium ethyl xanthate and both sphalerite and precipitated zinc sulfide, each activated with aqueous copper sulfate. It was determined that reactions occurring on the sphalerite and zinc sulfide surfaces produce the reaction products ethyl dixanthogen and cuprous ethyl xanthate, some of which are adsorbed on the mineral surfaces. As the pH of the xanthate solution increased from 5.6 to 11.0, the amount of cuprous ethyl xanthate on powdered sphalerite surfaces decreased and the amount of ethyl dixanthogen first increased and then decreased. It is generally accepted that the collector potassium ethyl xanthate will not float the mineral sphalerite (ZnS). However, Gaudin1 showed that sphalerite readily floats if activated with certain metal cations before exposure to the xanthate. Copper sulfate (CuSO4) was found to be the best activator for sphalerite. The over-all flotation reagent reaction, as given by Gaudin,3 is as follows: While this is the over-all reaction, the exact mechanism of the reaction and the intermediate compounds that may be formed are not yet known with certainty. RECENT developments in iron alloys containing nitrogen have indicated that this element may exert a considerable influence on the properties of the metal. This influence is not always in an undesirable direction and the indications are that nitrogen should be regarded as an alloying element, the amount of which should be subject to control, rather than as an inherently deleterious impurity. In controlling this element in liquid iron to the best advantage, it is necessary to have a reliable background of fundamental data pertaining to solubilities, rates of solution and chemical reactions of nitrogen in liquid iron. Obviously, the first step in such an investigation is the determination of the solubility of nitrogen in pure iron, and this has been the object of the experiments described in this paper. The solubility of nitrogen in solid iron has been measured by Zurich,1 Sieverts,2 Martin,3 and Iwasé4 and, the agreement among the first three inspires confidence in their results. No accurate determinations of its solubility in liquid iron have been recorded though several investigators have obtained approximate results. Strauss5 was able to introduce 0.03 to 0.04 per cent nitrogen into steel by the action of either ammonia or nitrogen on the liquid metal. This was accomplished by Eilender and

Every one having practical experience in making heating-gas knows how much room there is for improvement,, in order to avoid not only the production of poor gas, when good gas is most wanted, but also the waste due to burning gas on top of the fuel-bed, and the loss of both time and fuel in cleaning.* The producer which I have recently designed, and with which I am now experimenting with every prospect of success, at the oreroasting kilns at Chester furnace, is intended to remove these difficulties as far as possible, and at the same time to be continuous in operation. I have not had it at work long enough to get beyond the stage of experiment; hence, I will only at this time explain it in a general way, and illustrate it with a drawing, promising a more elaborate paper if it becomes the practical success I anticipate. THE Northwestern Pennsylvania Oil Producers Association and the United States Geological Survey have cooperated in conducting a pre-liminary study of the character of the flood waters, the relationship of changes in concentration of the salts dissolved in these waters to ultimate flood-oil production, and the original association of oil and water in the Bradford field. Bradford has long been recognized as a dry-sand field. As a matter of fact, there had been little information available on the oil-field waters of northern Pennsylvania until this investigation was undertaken. THE BRADFORD SAND Practically all of the oil produced in the Bradford field comes from one horizon, generally known as the Third, or Bradford, sand. Originally, it was believed that the Bradford sand was equivalent to the Third sand of Venango County, Pennsylvania and the name "Third" unfortunately still persists, although shortly after the discovery of the Bradford pool Carll1 determined that there was a stratigraphic interval of approximately ;000 ft. between the two horizons. The Bradford sand, although varying considerably in thickness and lithology within local areas, is persistent throughout the field. It is of marine origin and, upon both paleontologi-cal and stratigraphic evidence, is regarded as a basal member of the Chemung formation.

ALTHOUGH the crystallography of lattice transformations has been studied extensively during the past few years, these studies have been limited, with few exceptions1,2, to specimens in which the transformed lattice appears as a, segregate phase. A realization of the technical importance of the segregation mechanism, especially in the formation of martensitic structures and in age-hardening phenomena, has undoubtedly stimulated research in this direction. In the crystallographic studies of segregation, the general problem has been to relate the orientation of the parent crystal to that of the segregate crystals. The technique has been complicated by the fact that it has been necessary to deal with the presence of as many as 24 ideal segregate orientations within one parent lattice; furthermore, the segregate lattices are invariably scattered (seldom less than ±2°, often as much as 15° or 20°) about these ideal positions. It is probable that a more complete picture of phase transformations may result from a study in which complete lattice relationships between individual grains are evaluated, thereby providing an additional param-eter which, when it is necessary to work with multiple segregate-orienta-tions, cannot be evaluated. The present paper presents the results of such a study, ? wherein a peritectic reaction is made use of to produce the transformed lattices.

Uranium ore was first discovered in the Edgemont district of the southern Black Hills in the summer of 1951. The discovery was not made known for some time, but after the news leaked out prospecting became intense, and several hundred claims were staked in the spring of 1952. The Hot Springs Sub Office of the Atomic Energy Commission was established at that time and airborne radiometric surveys were commenced by the Government and by private companies. During the succeeding summer another important discovery was made by private airborne surveys in the northern Black Hills, and the area favorable for uranium ore was expanded many times. Between that summer of 1952 and the present, many individuals and groups have explored, developed, and exploited their claims until now uranium ore is produced in significant quantities and substantial reserves have been developed. The Black Hills portion of the geologic map of the U. S. issued by the U. S. Geological Survey is shown in Fig. 1. Sedimentary formations are exposed as a series of cuestas and hogbacks in a roughly annular pattern with the older sediments resting on the pre-Cambrian core, which is exposed in the eastern and southern portions of the dome.

Peru produced approximately 15,838,610 bbl. of oil during 1938, which was 1,618,406 bbl. below its production during 1937. As in recent years, the entire output of the country came from the La Brea-Parinas, Lobitos-Restin, and Zorritos fields, which are all situated along the northwestern coast. Outside of the proven areas, the drilling of test wells was continued by the Peruvian Government on the reserved zone near Zorritos. Six wells have been completed or are drilling. Of these one is a gas well at 2619 ft. and one is dry at 1415 ft. It is reported that three standard and two rotary rigs are being used. In southern Peru, in the Pirin region north of Lake Titicaca, the Government made a geological study of the National Reserve. In eastern Peru, the Cia. Petrolera El Ganso Azul continued its activities in the montana region, where its first well was reported to have had a show of oil at 1000 feet. There was also renewal of leasing activity in eastern Peru, where approximately 380,000 acres of new leases were filed on near Contamana. A brief history of TiCI, production and purification is given. Chlorinator feed materials for the production of TiCI4 are classified. The thermodynamics and kinetics of Ticl4 production by chlorination of TiO2 are discussed. Problems encountered in the chlorination and purification steps are outlined in detail. MOST of the current processes for the production of titanium metal require the use of TiC14 as a source of titanium values. This material can only be produced by a dry chlorination process, since it is immediately hydrolyzed in the presence of water. When pure, the tetrachloride is a colorless liquid boiling at 136°C. It fumes readily in moist air, reacting immediately with the moisture to form TiO, and HC1. History The tetrachloride was prepared as early as 1826 by DumasL who chlorinated a red hot mixture of carbon and TiO,. Since then, numerous other mixtures have been used including rutile, ilmenite, beneficiated ilmenites, titanium pigment, slags, and the various titanium metalloids such as TiN, TiCN, TiOC, and TiS2. S2Cl2, phosgene, and CC14 have been substituted for chlorine and CO has been used in place of carbon.

The favor with which the members of the Institute received Mr. Fernow's paper upon the use of charbon roux in the manufacture of iron has encouraged me to present this paper, in the hope of having the discussion upon the manufacture and use of the oldest and undoubtedly the best fuel for producing pig iron continued. Owing to the advances made in employing anthracite coal, bituminous coal, or coke, or mixtures of them, we are apt to forget how much of our present development is due to the pioneers in iron manufacture and the fuel which they employed in the production of pig iron. In Mr. Swank's last compilation of the iron and steel works of the United States, the furnace capacity of the country is given as 5,868,000 tons, of which 1,000,000 tons can be made in the 264 charcoal furnaces. In other words, over one-third of the furnaces now in existence use charcoal for fuel, and produce more than onesixth of the iron made. If to this is added the 130,000 tons of blooms and billets turned out by the 122 forges and bloomaries, the importance of the charcoal industries will be appreciated.

Vesta No. 4 and 5 mines supply most of the high volatile coal required for Jones & Laughlin's by-product coke plants. Until 1944 all coal produced in these mines was loaded by hand. Pressure to mechanize at Vesta was brought on by the manpower shortage in World War II, and in 1943 a decision was made to change to mechanical loading. It was the opinion of those concerned that by use of selective mining the coal would be clean enough to be processed by the existing preparation plants. At that time coal cleaning at Jones & Laughlin consisted of hand picking the larger sizes at the mine tipples and wet washing at plants located at the Pittsburgh and Aliquippa Works. A typical section of the Pittsburgh seam as it occurs at Vesta is shown in Fig. 1. The 14 to 16 in. of drawslate immediately over the coal is too soft to be used for roof and must be taken down, leaving the rooster coal just above for roof. In selective mining an attempt is made to mine the coal under the drawslate first and then load out the drawslate separately as refuse. In full seam mining slate and coal are shot down at the same time and loaded out.

Rotary kilns, varying in construction, are used in a variety of processes. Products differ and operating conditions vary accorcling to economic requirements. All of these variables influence the degree of instrumentation and type of control necessary or profitable to install. Products fired in rotary kilns are the results of combined temperature and time treatment and the interrelation of these two factors should be kept constantly in mind in the perusal of this paper. Measurements of Kiln Temperature The securing of proper temperatures within the rotary kiln, either of the charge or of the kiln lining in the high fire zone, are basic objectives of kiln operation; therefore the measurement of these high-temperature conditions merits first consideration. For these measurements, radiation pyrometers, properly designed and protected, have proved adequate, particularly where records ox automatic control are desired, while Optica1 pyometers may serve as portable indicators. Light-sensitive devices or photoelectric cells in this service are capable of producing records as well as certain forms of automatic control. High-temperature measuring devices for rotary-kiln work should have the measuring unit protected from dust, as a continued accumulation of deposit would lower the readings. Fig. 1 shows a typical application of radiation equipment to a rotary kiln, mounted far enough away from the sighting hole through the kiln hood to be protected From puffs or stingouts and with a sighting tube having a series of settling chambers, to prevent dust from reaching the lens. Although dust conditions inside the kiln itself usually fluctuate considerably and have their effect upon the readings at that moment, such effects are not cumulative and show as a continuous fluctuation in the temperature indicated, provided the radiation unit and recorder are responsive to such slight and rapid temperature fluctuations. The ambient temperature to which a measuring unit is subjected fluctuates from possibly 0" to over zoo°F., therefore these changes should have no effect upon the final reading or upon the life of the measuring unit. A very narrow sighting angle is desirable, so that measurement of temperature may be made as far as possible into the high fire zone without effect of the flame temperature. There should some sighting means on the measuring unit, so that the proper field may be viewed. Measurement of wall temperature taken at a point where the charge has just left the wall is less affected by dusting conditions than when taken elsewhere. There are many studies of flow in radial systems that can be used to interpret unsteady rerervoir flow problems. Although solutions for systems of infinite extent can be used to generate solutions fur finite ow systems by superposition, application is tedious. In this paper a step is made toward simplifying calcu1ations of such solutions for finite flow systems. Superposition is used to produce a tabulu-lion of the dimension1e.s.s pressure drop function at several locations within a bounded square that has a well at its center. The square system provides a useful building block that may be used to generate flow behavior for any rectangular shape whose sides are in integral ratios. Values of the tabulated dimensionless pressure drop function are simply added to obtain the dimensionless pressure drop function for the desired rectangulm system. The rectangular system may contain any number of wells producing at any rates. Furthermore, the outer boundaries of the rectangular system may be closed (no-flow) or they may he at constant pressure. Mixed conditions also may be conyidered. Tables of the dimensionless pressure drop function for the square system are presented and various applications of the technique are illustrated. Introduction In 1945, van Everdingen and Hurst' published solutions for the problem of water influx into a cylindrical reservoir. Since this problem is mathematically identical with the depletion of a cylindrical reservoir with a well at the origin, the van Everdingen-Hurst solution may be used to study the depletion problem. In their analysis, they assumed that the fluid had a small, constant compressibility such that flow was governed by the diffusivity equation For a constant production rate q starting at time zero, van Everdingen and Hurst showed that the unsteady pressurc distribution for both finite and infinite systems could be expressed in terms of a dimensionless pressure 'Sabulations of the dimensionless pressure drop for a unit value of r, were provided by van Everdingen and Hurst,' and later by Chatas.' Others also presented values in graphical or tabular form." If the radius of the well becomes vanishingly small, r,+ O, the line source solution may be used for Eq. 2 when infinite systems are considered. Eqs. 5 and 6 are excellent approximations for Eq. 2 under certain conditions: In 1954, Matthews, Brons and HazebroekV emonstrated that solutions such as Eq. 5 can be superposed to generate the behavior of bounded geometric shapes; i.e., the behavior of a bounded single-well system can be calculated by adding together the pressure disturbances caused by the appropriate array of an infinite number of wells producing from an infinite system. These wells are referred to as image wells. Matthews, Brons and Hazebroek considered systems containing a single well producing at a constant rate.
