IT is usual practice in the copper industry to use open horizontal molds for casting tough-pitch copper wire bars.1 A wire bar cast in this manner is partly characterized, by heavy wrinkles and a comparatively deep skin of oxide on the top of the bar, corresponding to the open side of the mold. On the theory that the rough, high-oxide surface might have an adverse effect on the rolling and drawing properties of a wire bar and might account for some of the irregularities of mill behavior, several bars which had been planed to remove the wrinkled surface were processed into wire. These bars responded to mill treatment more satisfactorily than did the regular wire bars. Realizing that machining the surface of one face of each bar would not be commercially feasible, it was decided that casting the metal into a vertical mold and cropping off the pouring end would accomplish. approximately the same result. Several wire bars of commercial size (250 lb.) were so cast and processed into wire for comparative test with bars cast in the usual horizontal molds. It is the purpose of this paper to present the results obtained from this investigation, in which commercial bar sizes and processing technique were used throughout. The results show that in general copper wire bars cast vertically are superior to those cast horizontally.

INTRODUCTION MacMillan Tungsten is located in northwestern Canada on the border of Yukon and Northwest Territories at a latitude of 63º17' and altitude of 1800 m above sea level. The deposit lies within the Selwyn Mountains 10 km from the Canol Road. It is 660 km by road from Whitehorse, Yukon, and 1325 km by air from Vancouver, British Columbia. MacMil lan Tungsten is a contact metasomatic deposit in gently dipping Lower Paleozoic limestone and limestone breccia adjacent to a Cretaceous quartz monzonite stock. Four tabular tungsten skarn horizons contain total geological reserves of 30 million tons grading 0.9% WO3. DISCOVERY AND HISTORY J.F. Allan, a former AMAX geologist, located mineral claims in September, 1962, to cover the source of scheelite-bearing skarn float found in the headwaters of Cirque Lake Valley. Exploration work on the property conducted mainly between 1968 and 1973, includes geological mapping, 10,500 m of diamond drilling in 73 holes, and 735 m of underground exploration. Mil 1 tests were carried out on a 300 ton bulk sample obtained underground. Preliminary feasibility studies, collection of weather data and a variety of environment studies have been carried out since 1973. Although no production date has been set MacMillan Tungsten will undoubtedly be a major tungsten producer.

DURING the past few years considerable interest has been shown in the study of fiber, and its effect, in wrought metals. Fiber has recently been defined as a "condition of parallelism of important lines or details in the structure. "1 Briefly stated, two distinct types of fiber are commonly encountered. One results from the alignment in the direction of working of constituents, more or less segregated, such as slag, oxides, carbides and dendritic formations. The second, and least understood, type is produced by working the metal below the recrystallization temperature in such a way as to develop a parallelism of the grains. This condition is readily recognized by the pronounced elongation of the grains in the direction of working. Under certain deformational treatments the grain fragments produced by cold working tend to orient in certain definite directions with respect to the axis of extension. Furthermore, even in metals that have been annealed after cold working preferred orientations may be present. It is perhaps logical to assume that such marked parallelism of structural elements would be manifested by directional properties in the metal. As a matter of fact, tests on many kinds of materials have shown differences in varying degrees. In recognition of this condition, propel design, for many purposes, places the fiber axis in such a way as to present the direction of maximum strength to the greatest applied stress.

Sampling of an orebody has a number of purposes. In the initial phase, it is necessary to define the limits of the orebody and mineral content to the extent that it can be stated whether it is, in fact, an economic orebody. Also, samples must be generated so that geological and metallurgical evaluations can be made. Finally, when sufficient information concerning the geology, mineralogy, and metallurgy are known, a mining method and plan can be developed and the metallurgical; plants constructed to process the ores as they become available. With today's large, complex open pit copper mines, single sampling methods would be inadequate. Diamond drilling, percussion drilling, underground shafts and drifts all play a part in the total orebody, definition. At Anamax Mining Company's Twin Buttes mine, sampling and orebody definition.wil1 eventually lead to the existence of three metallurgical processing plants and, perhaps, an underground mining operation. A 30 000 tons per day sulfide concentrator was placed in operation in September 1969 and a 10 000 tons per day oxide leaching plant was placed into service in May 1975. The aim of this presentation is to historically discuss the orebody sampling that has been done at Twin Buttes, briefly describe the orebody, and discuss the analytical methods currently used to assist the geologist, metallurgist and mine planner in their respective evaluations.

RECENT developments in iron alloys containing nitrogen have indi-cated that this element may exert a considerable influence on the proper-ties of the metal. This influence is not always in an undesirable direction and the indications are that nitrogen should be regarded as an alloying element, the amount of which should be subject to control, rather than as an inherently deleterious impurity. In controlling this element in liquid iron to the best advantage, it is necessary to have a reliable background of fundamental data pertaining to solubilities, rates of solution and chemical reactions of nitrogen in liquid iron. Obviously, the first step in such an investigation is the determination of the solubility of nitrogen in pure iron, and this has been the object of the experiments described in this paper. The solubility of nitrogen in solid iron has been measured by Jurich,1 Sieverts,2 Martin,3 and Iwasé4 and the agreement among the first three inspires confidence in their results. No accurate determinations of its solubility in liquid iron have been recorded though several investigators have obtained approximate results. Strauss5 was able to introduce 0.03 to 0.04 per cent nitrogen into steel by the action of either ammonia or nitrogen on the liquid metal. This was accomplished by Eilender and

In casting a thermal balance of the heat generated and absorbed in a blast-furnace treating lead-, copper- and similar non-ferrous ores, assumptions have always to be made for the values of the heat of formation of slag. Considering that the larger part of the charge introduced into the furnace comes out in the form of slag, the significance becomes apparent of a lack of heat-values for the singulo-silicate, which is the type of slag commonly made. The aim of the present investigation is to supply these heat-values as far as possible with the apparatus and the time available. The heats of formation of the ferrous and manganous bi-silicates have been determined by Le Chatelier;1 those of some silicates other than iron and manganese by Tschernobaeff;' finally Richards3 gives a figure for a copper blast-furnace slag of known composition. The existing data and those resulting from the present investigation are assembled in Table VI. 11. Materials Used. The materials used in the experiments mere silica, ferrous oxide, and calcium carbonate. Silica.—The silica sold in the market as chemically pure usually contains small amounts of magnesia, lime, and alumina, and is therefore not suited for the work. THE legislatures of New York and New Jersey, determined in 1919 that a vehicular tunnel should be built under the Hudson River. On July 1, 1919, an engineering staff was organized with the late Clifford M. Holland as chief engineer, and this staff was given a number of problems to solve, such as location, size, type of tunnel, method of construction, method of ventilation and cost. After a period of preliminary investigations and studies it was decided to build the tunnel at Canal St., New York, connecting 12th St., Jersey City. This is the center of the heaviest traffic across the Hudson River. It was also decided to build two tunnels-one for west-bound traffic and one for east-bound traffic-the tunnels to be of cast iron, built up of segments and bolted together, each tunnel to have a roadway 20 ft. wide and a clear heat room of 13 ft., 6 in. This is to provide for two lines of vehicles in each direction. The tunnels have an exterior diameter of 29 ft., 6 in. The interior lining is of concrete, the sidewalls tiled with a vitreous white tile and the roadways paved with granite block. The entrances and exits at both ends are separated by two blocks so as to reduce traffic congestion.

Of the several interesting physical properties of clay which have claimed the attention of investigators in recent years, none is more important than the behavior of the material when heated to temperatures above those of dehydration. Some of the problems to be solved are: 1. The mineralogical changes that take place in firing. 2. The relation between temperature and change in constitution, shrinkage, porosity, etc. 3. The importance of the time factor, as duration of firing, either in reaching a given temperature, or of exposure to a constant temperature. Mineralogical Changes As a result of fusion, reactions take place between the constituents of a clay, which result in a reorganization of the mass, and the formation of new compounds. Of the new minerals developed, sillimanite is the one usually recorded, and has been referred to by a number of observers.' There appears to be a difference of opinion, however, regarding the temperature at which it is formed. Thus Klein2 notes that sillimanite forms only above 1300" C., while Mellor claims that it can develop below 1200" C., the difference in results being conditioned by the time factor. In Klein's experiments the test pieces were fired in 12 hr., while in Mel-lor's, the temperature rose from 800" to 1180" in 24 hr., and occupied the same time in cooling back to 800".

THE following example of the practical application of engineering geology is of interest in that it demonstrates the advantage of keeping accurate records of all wells, whether drilled by one's self or by others, together with the advantage gained by gathering such data during the process of development. The fault described was found in the autumn of 1915, during the hurried development caused by the discovery of the famous Gusher Bend pool in Red River Parish, Louisiana. The writer was at the time employed by one of the operating companies as geologist, and the example is a portion of the routine work. LOCATION The oil fields of northern Louisiana and east Texas are located in Caddo, Bossier, De Soto and Red River Parishes, Louisiana, and Marion County, Texas. A very narrow strip of the eastern portion of the latter is productive. The producing oil pools are known as the Caddo Field, in the northern part, and the De Soto-Red River Field, in the southern. The two fields are 60 miles apart. There are several gas fields between then, but no important supply of oil has been found, though there are several producing wells in the Anona chalk, locally called the chalk rock, in the Elm Grove gas field in Township 16 North, Range 11 West (see Plate 1).

There were no radical changes in the petroleum situation in the Russian Soviet Union during the 1926 to 1927 operating year. The developments of the previous year were continued, but the major undertakings were far from being completed. The pipe lines from Baku to Batum and from Grozny to Touapse, and the large refineries on the Black Sea are delayed in their completion by the insufficient authorizations; until their completion the changes in the general situation will be necessarily of a halfway nature. The marketing situation was subject to much controversy during the past year and, though certain statements are quite true, the bulk of the criticism against the petroleum industry hardly deserves mention. The home market in Russia is steadily growing, with the per capita kerosene consumption already exceeding the prewar figure and fuel oil consumption obviously gaining. The foreign trade is making rapid and well-grounded success, but continues to suffer from low world quotations. There is no apparent sacrifice of home consumers in favor of export trade. The production of all Russian fields increased by 13,750,000 bbl. as compared with the 1925 to 1926 operating year, and next year's program anticipates a further increase of 9,720,000 bbl. (Table 1). The increased and improved refining facilities will make the real gain in production in the next year even larger than these figures indicate.

SUMMARY ONE of the important reserves of manganiferous iron ore is at Boston Hill, near Silver City, New Mexico. The area consists of a faulted block of gently dipping Lower Paleozoic shale, dolomite, limestone and sandstone, which have been intruded by a roughly circular mass of quartz-bearing monzonite porphyry and subordinate dikes. From a noselike protuberance of the intrusion radiate many premineral faults, which have localized much of the hypogene mineralization. Three important stages of hypogene mineralization can be recognized: (1) mesitite, a manganiferous iron magnesite, (2) quartz sulphides, and (3) barite-galena. The carbonate stage is widespread but stronger near the intrusion. The quartz may have been derived from hydrothermal alteration of the igneous rocks. Barite-galena is most important in the Chloride Flat mining district, about one mile north, where argentiferous galena provided silver for the supergene ore. The hypogene carbonate, lean in iron and manganese, has been oxidized and consequently enriched by meteoric waters containing an excess of oxygen and carbon dioxide to form ore bodies of intimately mixed hematite and pyrolusite. The ore bodies, at one place attaining a length of 1600 ft., a width of 300 ft., and a thickness of 25 ft., are largely confined to areas of brecciation and to spreads from faults in Silurian dolomite beneath soft Devonian shale.

At the Southern Peru Copper operation in Toque-pala, Peru, a new process flowsheet for the recovery of byproduct molybdenite has proved successful in dealing with complex and highly variable ores. This paper describes the process and the functions of each of the chemicals used. The Toquepala concentrator of the Southern Peru Copper Corp., located approximately 720 miles southeast of Lima near the Chilean border, processes a daily 36,500 tons of ore containing between 0.50 and 3.00% copper. The molybdenite content in the ore also varies greatly ranging from essentially nothing to as high as 0.15%. The 1966 yearly averages were approximately 1.20% copper and 0.03% molybdenite. The Toquepala porphyry deposit is a mushroom-shaped ore body consisting of a flat-lying enriched zone of predominant chalcocite with a stem-like extension of hypogene chalcopyrite ore in depth within and around a large breccia pipe.1 The underlying chalcopyrite ore has not been reached; however, due to the presence of a major post orebody fault, predominantly chalcopyrite ore is present in the north side of the pit. Most of the molybdenite occurs either as small, fine granular, pulverulent masses in vugs or empty voids of breccia, or as thin foliated masses and narrow thread-like filling in rock joints and fractures. The normal occurrence of quartz gangue with the molybdenite gives some basis for correlating the molybdenite mineralization to some later periods of silicification. On April 18, 1962, the molybdenite recovery plant at Toquepala went on stream, approximately 27 months after the copper concentrator had been in production. The plant was designed and built by Southern Peru Copper Corp.'s engineering and mechanical departments. The basic method chosen for separating the molybdenite from the copper concentrate was the sodium hypochlorite-sodium ferrocyan-ide process. The selection of this process was based on the results of an extensive testing program performed by the Colorado School of Mines Research Foundation, Inc. and the economic conditions of the area. The originally designed process could never be fully implemented due to a lack of sodium hypo-chlorite and has had to be continually modified to satisfy the requirements of the kaleidoscope of ores from the mine. The three basic problems that plague the operation of any molybdenite recovery plant are all present at Toquepala in large measure. Both the quantity of plant feed and the quantity of molybdenite contained in the plant feed are continuously changing. Even more detrimental to an efficient operation is the fact that the copper mineralization in the feed frequently changes once in every 24 hours and occasionally once a shift. The opinion has been widely held that the corrosion of alpha brass occurs by the selective solution of zinc. As late as 1939, Fink1 and Evans2 suggested that in the initial stage of the corrosion the selective solution of zinc produces copper-rich areas, which subsequently act as cathodes that facilitate the deposition of copper. Previously Abrams3 had shown that most of the copper found on corroded brass was re-deposited and not residual, although he did not consider the nature of the initiation of the corrosion process. Enough data exist to indicate that any metal surface is sufficiently heterogeneous to provide the anodes and cathodes necessary for the initiation of corrosion.4,5 Thus, for alpha brass we need postulate not an initial selective solution of zinc, but only the existence of local differences in electrochemical potential. The heterogeneity responsible for potential differences may arise from oxide and other films as well as from alloy concentration gradients. Even though selective corrosion may be possible in some alloy systems, previous data on alpha brass as well as the experimental work reported in this paper do not require this supposition. Bengough and May16 in a discussion of Abrams' paper, first suggested the addition of small amounts of arsenic (0.03 per cent) to a1pha brass to prevent the redeposition of copper (dezincification). This suggestion was later substantiated by Nixon.7 In their studies of the inhibiting influence of arsenic, Evans and Fink were led to the selective-solution hypothesis in order to explain the initial corrosion of such alloys. They believed that an arsenic film covered anode areas and prevented the formation of copper-rich spots capable of acting as cathodes for the deposition of copper. They did not consider, however, the mechanism by which the arsenical film was formed. Bengough and May,a in another publication, suggested that the commonly found gray or black arsenical film may act to: (I) carry oxygen to the brass surface, (2) increase the discharge potential of copper on brass, (3) precipitate cuprous chloride from colloidal suspension in chloride solutions. Masing9 assumed that the film found upon arsenical brass was metallic arsenic. His measurements of hydrogen overvoltage of bulk arsenic led him to believe that the inhibition of dezincification occurs because the overvoltage of a brass surface is lowered by the arsenic film. He reasoned that this film would permit the more rapid reduction of hydrogen at the cathode, which would prevent the redeposition of copper. The effect of transitiorz element bitzary solid solution additions upon the recrystallization temperature of columbium has been investigated. The elements Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, W, Re, and 0s OWY the yecystallization tempel-aturye, while Ti, V, CY, zr, Mo, Ru, Rh, Pd, Hf, Ta, W, Ir, and Pt mise it. A correlation is kloted between the rate of chatzge of recyystallization tewaperature with atomic hercent solute and the free atom electron configuration of the solute element. The work of Abrahamson and Grant1 has indicated a correlation between the free atom ground-state electron configuration and the change in brittle-ductile transition temperature per atomic percent solute in chromium base alloys. A similar correlation was observed for the change in the recrystallization temperature of iron base alloys by Abrahamson and Blakeney and Abrahamson. It was also observed that the limit of rapid change in recrystallization temperature also Correlated with the electronic configuration of the free solute atom. A further study by Abrahamson4 established the generality of the phenomenon by yielding similar results for vanadium base dilute alloys. It has been inferred that a peri- odicity might be expected with changes in the free atom electron configuration of the solvent element. This study is the third set of transition base metal systems to be studied. It is the object of this and further studies on transitional metal systems to detect any systematic variations in the observed correlation which might contribute to the understanding of the electron interactions which are evidently exhibiting themselves. PROCEDURE All alloys were made using 99.9 pct Cb with 0.030 Ta, 0.016 0, 0.0025 H, 0.003 Mo, 0.021 Fe, 0.005 C, and 0.002 N. The solute elements were 99.9 pct pure. According to the published binary phase diagrams5 and metallographic examinations at X750, all additions were in solid solution. The alloys were arc melted and remelted 6 times in the form of cubic 400-g buttons under an argon atmosphere. They were then hot forged at 1200oC to 0.6-in. diameter, annealed for 3 hr at 1200o under argon, and furnace cooled. The specimens were then machined to 0.400 -in. diameter. Grain size was checked and found to remain essentially constant at 150 i 30 grains per sq mm. The specimens were then cold swaged to 0.187-in. diameter, yielding 46 i 1 pct cold work. All alloys were chemically analyzed for the major solute. Analyses of random samples indicated that the impurity content remained at the values of the starting material. Tungsten contamination was held to 0.007 pet.

Since the end of World War 11 interest has been increasing in the use of shaped charges in the mining industry and in other industries using explosives for blasting purposes. Shaped charges employ the principle known as the "Munroe effect," which was discovered by Charles E. Munroe more than 50 years ago (in 1888). Details of their design have been explained elsewhere.1,2,3 Fig I shows the essential features of design of two types of shaped charges (with conical and hemispherical cavities) and a schematic sketch of their action upon detonation. The following discussion deals with the behavior of the metal in the cavity liners when they are subjected to intense Pressures exerted when the explosive charge is detonated. Among the conclusions reached in research on shaped explosive charges, the following have been established conceming cavity liners:1'2 I. The optimum wall thickness of a conical cavity liner is dependent upon the apex angle of the cone as well as On the base diameter of the charge. Acute apex angles require thinner walls for optimum perfonnance and more obtuse angles require thicker walls for the same base diameter. '. Cones were more effective in forming a penetrating jet when the walls were tapered; that is, the thickness of the wall of the cone increased from the apex down. 3. The physical and mechanical properties of metals have a marked effect upon their performance as cavity-liner material. Boiling point, ductility, malleability, ten-sile strength, and hardness are among the properties that influence the effectiveness of a metal used as a cavity liner. Lead, for example, makes a wide, flat crater in steel plates. Aluminum makes a deeper crater than lead, and an aluminum alloy having a high tensile strength makes a deeper hole, but slightly smaller in diameter. Cast iron makes a deep, narrow hole. These findings, together with the following analysis under Metallographic Survey of slug, offer solutions to many of the problems involved in solving the mechanism of the formation of Munroe jets. It has been fairly well established that cavity liners collapse in a manner similar to that indicated in Fig 2, Conical liners are known to collapse upon themselves while hemispherical liners are believed to turn inside out in the process of jet formation. The first has been definitely proved by recovery of collapsed portions of cones, while liners from partly detonated charges show that hemispheres may turn inside out. Fig 3 shows a sketch of a recovered slug from a 6-in. shaped charge using a 45" cone made of cast iron. (This size of charge drilled holes up to 3 ft in depth in solid granodiorite.)

The published phase diagrams for the copper-zirconium system1,2 indicate that the solid solubility of zirconium in copper is not accurately known. Studies made on relatively impure alloys by Pogodin, Shumova, and Kugucheva3 yielded a maximum solubility value of 1 wt pct Zr at the eutectic temperature. Allibone and sykes5 reported that an as-cast 0.2 wt pct Zr alloy is single phase at room temperature. Limited results obtained by Raub and Enge14 indicated that zirconium solubility in copper is less than 0.13 wt pct Zr at 940°C. Tn 1960, on the basis of a microstructural examination of several copper-rich Cu-Zr alloys, saarivirta6 placed the maximum solubility of zirconium in copper at 0.15 wt pct at the eutectic temperature, 980°C. The present note describes results obtained during a re-investigation of the Cu-Zr system for the purpose of accurately establishing the solidus and solvus curves and the eutectic temperature in copper-rich alloys. High-purity copper (99.99 pet) and zirconium (99.64 pet) consolidated reactor grade sponge were used to prepare several alloys, containing up to 2 wt pct Zr, by induction melting in graphite crucibles in vacuum and chill casting into a split steel mold. The melting procedure consisted of first melting the copper charge and then adding the bulk zirconium wrapped in pure copper foil. Chemical analyses were made of both the cold-rolled alloy ingots after homogenization at 925°C for 450 hr in evacuated quartz capsules and of small specimens which had been used in the phase diagram studies. 'The carbon content of each alloy was also determined and was found to be less than 0.001 wt pct in every case. Metallographic and electrical resistivity measurements were used as the primary methods for this investigation, although some thermal analysis studies were also performed. Heat treatments of all the alloys were carried out with the specimens wrapped in molybdenum or alloy foil (of the same composition as the specimen) and sealed in quartz tubes either in vacuum or under a purified helium atmosphere. Following high-temperature anneals for long periods of time, slight depletion of zirconium from the specimen surface was observed. Therefore, careful preparation of samples for microscopic examination and chemical analysis of the samples themselves was necessary to check the composition of samples used in determining phase boundaries. Points on the solvus curve were determined on quenched specimens by both isothermal reaction after solution heat treatment at 950°C for 8 hr and by isothermal annealing of alloy specimens at successively higher temperatures for times ranging from 24 to 500 hr. SEVERAL techniques have been evaluated for cooling the throat area of rocket-nozzle inserts to prevent erosion or fracture of the inserts during exposure to high operating temperatures and pressures. Self-cooled composites, such as infiltrated tungsten, have shown considerable promise for these applications. These composites can be fabricated by infiltrating the refractory matrix with a lower-melting metal or non-metal which is insoluable in tungsten. During firing, the lower-melting substance undergoes a series of continuous endothermic phase changes which absorb sufficient heat to maintain the nozzle matrix material at or below a safe operating temperature. At present, the state-of-the-art has reached a point where the refractory matrix density and microstruc-ture have been established as the critical parameters to be controlled for optimum self-cooled performance.'" Nondestructive testing has been utilized to ensure that porous tungsten billets were of uniform density and free from cracks or other defects prior to fabrication into rocket nozzle inserts. Ultrasonic-velocity techniques have been employed because of their reliability and reproducibility. The purpose of this note is to present and interpret the test data developed for porous tungsten matrices. For evaluation purposes, tungsten powders with Fisher subsieve sizes of approximately 4 and 18 p have been obtained for study from four commercial sources: the General Electric Co., Wah Chang Corp., Fansteel Metallurgical Corp., and Kennametal, Inc. Porous tungsten matrices were fabricated from the powders by hot pressing in induction-heated graphite die assemblies. Typical billets ranged from 3 in. diam, 2 in, high to 5 in. diam, 5 in. high. The ultrasonic-velocity measurement technique employed was through transmission, pulse echo at a frequency of 1.0 mc using matched barium titanate crystal transducers. The testing equipment included a pulsed ultrasonic generator, an amplifier, a specimen holder, and an oscilloscope, as shown in Fig. 1. The porous tungsten thickness was measured to i 0.0005 in, with precision micrometers while the oscilloscope achieved 0.02 psec time measurement accuracy. The time for a sound wave to pass through the billet, the bulk wave velocity, was calculated to 0.5 pct using Eq. [l]: V-} where V = bulk wave velocity, in. per psec, T = specimen thickness, in., and / = time, psec. To develop inspection standards, the bulk density of a porous tungsten billet was determined by the ASTM water-immersion technique.3 The ultrasonic-velocity measurements were completed at seventeen positions for each billet and averaged to develop a characteristic standard velocity for a particular tungsten powder at several density levels. THE controlled amounts of phosphorus, arsenic, sulphur or selenium found in commercial coppers perform a variety of highly useful functions. Indeed, a large segment of modem copper technology is essentially dependent upon the presence of one or more of these elements. Consequently, the literature contains many references to their effects but the scope is broad and has been only partly covered. New data are presented herewith directed toward a better understanding of the basic behavior of these elements in copper, with particular emphasis on the composition range 0 to 0.05 per cent. These data are a part of a general program of research on the effects of impurities on the properties of oxygen-bearing and oxygen-free copper, other portions of which have been reported previously.1-2-3 Schematically, the behavior of individual elements is determined from measurements of conductivity and softening temperature,1, 2 and the binary alloys employed are synthesized from high-purity copper in order to eliminate interference from the effects of extraneous impurities. Alloys of selected composition were first prepared in the oxygen-free form by continuously casting the melts in the form of 3/8-in. diameter rod. Oxygen was added subsequently to portions of the alloys, either by remelting or by diffusion at 850°C. from a surface scale. Test wires were drawn one B. and S. number per pass, using four 30-min. 600°C. anneals at o.3125, 0.257, o.204 and o.162 in., and a final cold reduction of 95 per cent t0 0.081 in. Oxygen-bearing slugs made by remelting were hot-rolled to 5/16 in., drawn to 0.162 in., annealed for 30 min. at 600°C. and cold-drawn 95 per cent to 0.081inch. The alloys containing phosphorus, having been compounded very early in the program, were prepared in the form of 5/16-in. rod, and processed to wire with only the last three intermediate anneals listed above, all of these having been conducted in commercial nitrogen. In addition, the conductivity anneals on these alloys were also performed in the same atmosphere, and the small amount of oxygen present as an impurity in the gas resulted in some loss of accuracy at temperatures of 700° to 800°C., as will be shown later. Subsequently, the anneals for all oxygen-free alloys were conducted in hydrogen to prevent oxidation, and purified nitrogen was employed only for oxygen-bearing samples. All conductivity anneals were of one hour duration followed by a rapid quench in 10 per cent H2SO4.
