Innovative Technology for Optimised Thickening Sedimentation

Operating well designed and maintained surface mine haul roads is the key to minimising truck haulage costs - in itself a significant component of the total cost per tonne mined. Existing and proposed mining operations are subject to scrutiny, both from the economic and environmental perspectives. In the long run, this scrutiny returns improved efficiencies and leaner, 'greener' operations. The focus of this evolving evaluation process should and will certainly fall on haulage operations - simply by virtue of their contribution to overall cost of operations and sustainability impacts. Whilst the end result - improved efficiency and contributions to resource sustainability - is not in itself problematic, it is the route, or process followed to achieve these improvements that needs to be carefully managed. We can be guided on this journey by our understanding of how a road is designed, and, critically, the technological solutions that can contribute to a company's sustainability initiatives. This paper examines the current state of mine road design and operation, together with the economic and environmental issues associated with under-performance. The paper serves as a basis for evaluating the economic and environmental contributions that technology in road design and management can deliver to sustainable operations. Utilising innovation is the key to long-term sustainability and as a means of positioning the industry for the imminent structural changes to the economy and environment, changes which are now within the operating life of many mines, haul roads and haul trucks.

The challenge facing the engineering provider is to calculate throughput rates when faced with disparate specific energies calculated by different testing methodologies. Typically, an ownerÆs team would expect that the throughput calculations be checked using more than one method, therefore it is inevitable that there will be differences, based on which methodology is used. This engineering challenge is exacerbated by the continuing evolution of contemporary circuit configurations such as two stage pebble crushing with or without high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) as the second stage, or second stage pebble crusher product reporting to the ball milling circuit, etc.This paper is a companion to the paper first presented at SAG 2011, which showed that the Bond Indices are an excellent tool for estimating the specific energy requirements for semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills in single-stage SAG milling (SSS) circuits, SAG and ball mill circuits (SAB) or SAG and ball mill circuits with pebble crushers (SABC). This paper presents how the Bond Indices have been used to calculate ball mill specific energies, and therefore throughput rates, for SAG mill based circuits. Once the ball milling specific energy is known, tower mill and vertimill energy requirements can also be calculated. Process Options for Difficult Arid-Region Nickel Laterites In the absence of the discovery of significant nickel sulfide deposits, the future of Australia's nickel industry will increasingly depend on cost effect processes for low-grade nickel laterites. The problems encountered with the West Australian HPAL plants, resulting in three of the four plants being shut down, have caused the industry to revisit atmospheric leaching options, particularly heap leaching. West Australian laterites are characteristically very varied in grade, chemical composition and mineralogy with the result that, thus far, one process does not fit all laterites. In this paper the leaching of an especially refractory ore is compared using column leaching of whole ore and atmospheric leaching and HPAL processing of ground ore. The key characteristic is the resistance of the goethite phase to acid attack with low-to-moderate temperature leaching conditions. The refractory characteristic is attributed to the stabilising influence of chromium and aluminium and possibly manganese substitution in the goethite crystal structure and goethite morphology. A significant three-fold increase in both nickel and cobalt extractions under atmospheric leaching conditions was achieved by the relatively simple modification of bubbling sulfur dioxide into the reaction vessel to create a reducing environment. Recoveries increased from <30 per cent to 90 per cent nickel and 86 per cent cobalt after 10 hours of leaching at 95¦C. An even greater improvement was achieved under ambient conditions by heating the ore to temperatures above 250¦C for 30 minutes. Subsequent leaching at ambient temperature gave an eight-fold increase in both nickel and cobalt recoveries after 14 days bottle rolling. Both methods could be optimised and implemented in such a way as to increase laterite reserves in conjunction with a heap leach operation but may be better suited to vat or closed tank processing.

The Kingsgate molybdenite pipes are considered on petrochemical data and field occurrence to be, possibly, epi-magmatic plutonic offshoots grading into hydrothermal bodies. There is reason to believe that the ore is derived from a highly acid granite of type similar to that of the tin bearing areas of northern New England. The mineralogy, microtextures and paragenesis of the ore are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Kingsgate Mining Field is situated in steep, heavily timbered terrain 18 miles E.N.E. of Glen Innes and 430 miles north of Sydney. Bismuth and molybdenum ores were discovered at Kingsgate (Yarrow Creek) in 1877. Subsequently some 50 pipes were developed yielding tonnages which at the peak of operations, 1905 to 1920, rivalled production from the rich deposits of northern Queensland.Attempts to revive the field have been made periodically and small parcels of ore have been forthcoming.' During World War II demand for piezioelectric quartz again focussed attention on Kingsgate but twinning and other imperfections of the quartz prevented all but a minor exploitation of the otherwise noteworthy crystals of this locality.There is reason to believe that the ore at Kingsgate is not exhausted through exploration and mining costs would probably be high due to the capricious nature of the pipes and to the irregular distribution of rich ore shoots within them.

The Century zinc-lead-silver deposit has a geological resource of 118 million tonnes averaging 10.2% zinc, 1.5% lead and 36 g/t silver. It lies approximately 250 krn NNW of Mt Isa in NW Queensland, Australia, and is hosted by middle Proterozoic age siltstones and shales of the Lawn Hill Formation. Within the orebody, most mineralisation occurs selectively within black shale units as fine grained sphalerite and galena lamellae with minor pyrite and siderite. The black shale units are separated by weakly mineralised sideritic siltstone horizons. The deposit is unmetamorphosed and only weakly deformed, displaying excellent lateral stratigraphic and grade continuity. The deposit is mostly overlain by younger Proterozoic sediments and later Cambrian age limestone cover and only a small proportion of the mineralisation crops out. Mineralisation has a subtle surface expression without a classic gossan profile, probably due to the low iron sulphide content of the ore. These factors contributed materially to the length of time between the first recognition of lead-zinc-silver mineralisation in the area by prospectors in the 1880s, to the discovery of the orebody by CRA Exploration Pty Ltd (CRAE) in April 1990.   Small scale prospecting and mining continued in the area from the date of the first mining lease in 1887. Post 1950, the deposit area was also included within nine separate regional exploration titles prior to CRAE's title acquisition in 1987. CRAE's original exploration strategy was partly pragmatically and partly conceptually inspired, but the eventual discovery only partly conformed to the original conceptual model. The deposit was found higher in the stratigraphy than the original target position, with unexpectedly low total sulphide content relative to other known deposits.   The discovery soil anomaly was located by the CRAE's first regional orientation traverse line in the area, but was not drill tested for three years. The discovery sequence at Century has strong elements of persistence, technical competence and some luck. It demonstrates that even in well explored terrains (by conventional standards) the exploration story can never be said to be over. The foreshadowed development of an economic resource at Century will hopefully inspire continued commitment to 'brownfields' exploration by mining companies, and demonstrate to external regulators the importance of genuine multiple land use strategies and the need for continued access to land for exploration and mining purposes.

When a collapse in its services shaft caused rapid gas build up and its premature closure in. 1951, the Blackwater Mine at Wiauta was in full production with significant ore reserves yet to be mined. A total of nearly 23 tonnes of gold was produced from the mine during its 44 year life. It was New ZealandÆs deepest underground mine, producing gold from an extensive sub-vertical mineralised quartz reef that averaged 0.6 m in width. Mining was by stoping between adits and short shafts, latterly with the main mine access through the 840 m deep Prohibition shaft. Macraes Mining Company Ltd are presently investigating the possibility of reopening the mine. This paper outlines a preliminary assessment of the main geotechnical factors for achieving the reopening, using recent exploration and old mine information. The greywacke host rock mass in the vicinity of the quartz reef has been evaluated using both these sources, and the paper discusses how the geological structure, intact and rock mass strengths, the rock mass defects, in situ stresses, and groundwater inflows may effect the reopening and support of the prohibition shaft, the excavation methods and support for a new supplementary shaft, and the likely excavation and support requirements for working adits and stopes in the rejuvenated mine.

In the Ngakuru area, zeolite deposits occur in late Quaternary lake sediments and ignimbrites. The deposits are associated with sinters, hydrothermal eruption breccias, and quartz-adularia altered fault breccias: all indicators of a shallow epithermal environment. Several of the deposits are adjacent to epithermal gold prospects. Zeolites are most abundant in lacustrine tuffs of the Ngakuru Formation, a 100-300 m thick sequence of siltstone, tuff, diatomite, sandstone and conglomerate. The formation overlies the Ohakuri Ignimbrite dated at c. 270 Ka, and is unconformably overlain by alluvial sands and gravels which are younger than 20 Ka. Individual zeolite deposits contain 30-80 per cent zeolite over a thickness of up to 45 m in thinly stratified tuff beds. The tuff beds are locally overlain by diatomite. The tuffs are composed mainly of glass shards and pumice clasts, with minor volcanic plagioclase, quartz and biotite crystals. Glass shards in the tuffs are replaced by the silica-rich zeolites mordenite and clinoptilolite. Amorphous silica (opal A), opal-CT, K-feldspar and smectite are also present. The distribution of the Ngakuru Formation is controlled by northeast trending normal faults, which separate it into the Ngakuru and Guthrie grabens. A silicified (quartz-adularia altered) hydrothermal breccia along one of the fault zones suggests that the faults acted as feeders for heated water that caused the deposition of the zeolite minerals. Some of the zeolite deposits are adjacent to sinters and hydrothermal eruption breccias. The location of the sinter about 20 m above one deposit indicates that the zeolites were formed at a depth of 20 to 70 m below the paleosurface. The hydrothermal eruption breccias contain clasts of altered ignimbrite, which contain geochemically anomalous gold and silver values. By analogy with their occurrence in active geothermal systems in the Taupo Volcanic Zone, mordenite and clinoptilolite in the Ngakuru deposits probably formed at temperatures of 60-150oC from near-neutral pH waters as a result of interaction with glass-rich tuff beds. The Ngakuru zeolite deposits are therefore interpreted as shallow hydrothermal alteration zones within larger epithermal gold-bearing systems.

The Peelwood district of New South Wales is located some 65 miles south of Bathutst on the Tuena-Crookwell road. A number of occurrences of lead-zinc-copper ore are known from this district but only three mines, Peelwood, Cordillera and Mt. Costigan, have achieved any significant production. The purpose of the paper is to describe the mineral composition of sulphide ores from these three localities.HISTORYNo published information on the geology of the Peelwood area is available. Came (1899) reports that, at the time of cessation of mining operations in 1888, the Peelwood mine had produced some 600 tons of copper metal and regulus, the Cordillera mine had yielded 9000 tons of ore at the recoverable grade of 2·5 per cent Pb, 2·5 per cent Cu, 90z/ton Ag and 1 dwtjto:p. Au, but that no production figures were available from Mt. Costigan. No further work was carried out on these properties until 1951 when the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia instigated a programme of geological mapping and exploratory diamond drilling (Whitten, unpublished data, 1953). This paper explores the structural/physical and policy based issues that have lead to the apparent resource conflict between Forestry and Mining on the West Coast. Both industries are important to the West Coast and bear many similarities, particularly at the corporate end of the mining scale. However there are very distinct structural differences which set the scene for friction at the boundaries. Examples of how mining impacts upon forestry illustrate where some of the friction arises and provides some insight as to where some solutions are or may be found.

The Australian mining industry is at an interesting stage in its development. Of the large number of mining companies in Australia, some are still solely domestic in their focus, others have made their first tentative forays offshore, and others are global players of significance in tile world industry.   It is not long ago that the entire industry was almost exclusively domestic in its focus. Very few companies before the early 1980s had ventured offshore, and those that did so were considered quite risque. The initial moves were made mainly by large companies who could afford to lose the funds expended in getting started in a range of offshore locations.   Almost all offshore jurisdictions were considered to be high risk compared to the safety of home - I recall the extreme difficulty I encountered in the mid 1980s in endeavouring to persuade a Board to joint venture into an attractive gold opportunity in South East Asia.   One of the problems inhibiting the offshore development of the Australian mining industry was that some mining companies had had unfortunate experiences offshore. Others had heard of those who had had unfortunate experiences offshore and, as such, 'offshore' gained a bad name and the more risk averse boards and. management of the time simply put the whole idea into the 'too hard' basket.

Microprobe analyses of electrum grains in some Hauraki Au-Ag deposits indicate that gold fineness is in the range of 500 - 800 (50 - 80 per cent Au), but for most deposits the range is usually narrower than this. The electrums contain minor amounts (<0.8 per cent) of copper, arsenic, antimony, mercury, iron, and sulphur. Platinum and palladium were analysed for but were not detected (detection limit 0.24 per cent for Pt or Pd). For some deposits (eg Waihi), the average fineness values for the analysed electrums correspond fairly well with the electrum fineness determined by assay during the historic mining operations.

Numerical simulations using the discrete element method (DEM) were carried out to investigate the flow patterns and stress field redistribution at the hopper and feeder interface. The influences of different filling heights, belt speeds and clearances between the hopper bottom and feeder surface on feeder loads were studied. Meanwhile, experiments were conducted by utilising wedged plane-flow hoppers with different configurations and horizontal feeders with various clearances. The simulation results were compared with theoretical values and experimental measurements. In terms of the cases presented in this study, simulation results reveal good agreements with experimental observations regarding the flow pattern. Being similar to the theoretical values, the simulations provide close predictions on vertical feeder loads for steady flow states, but they may show significant overestimations for initial states. Macraes Mining Company Limited operates a 2.1 million tonnes per annum gold processing plant at Macraes Flat, Otago. This uses a conventional CIL route to treat oxide ore, and a flotation, grind, CIL route for sulfide ore. This paper describes the design and operation of this process plant.

The Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) Mine is one of the future underground mines of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI). Located in the remote highlands of Papua, Indonesia, the GBC mine is scheduled to start production in 2017 reaching its peak production capacity of 160 000 t/d in 2023.In order to reach planned production capacity, the GBC mine will utilise an ore handling system consisting of rail haulage, crushing and conveying. The rail haulage system will utilise over 20 km of track while crushing is accomplished by way of three gyratory crushers each with a capacity of 3300 t/h. Nine conveyors operating in two parallel systems, each system over 3 km in length, will move the ore from the crushers to the stockpiles. These systems require a network of larger tunnels and mass excavations to accommodate the planned production facilities.This paper will describe the ore handling system, tunnel and mass excavation methodology as well as some of the challenges encountered with ground conditions and excavation quality during the execution of the project. A combination of lateral and vertical development methodologies and equipment, including drill jumbos, mechanised raise climbers and specialised ground support equipment, have proven successful in the development of a quality ore handling system.CITATION:Pasek, I, Firdausi, H and Chenier, T, 2016.
