Alcoa operates two bauxite mines at Huntly and Willowdale, located within the jarrah forest south-east of Perth in Western Australia. Ore reserves are shallow but extensive, and mining pits averaging around 20 ha in size are distributed across a mining region in a mosaic pattern, linked to a centrally-located crusher by a radiating network of haulroads. A mining or crusher region is defined partly in terms of economic haul distances, and new regions are opened once the current regions’ reserves have been mined. Since commencing in 1973, the Huntly mine has constructed and progressively closed three previous mining regions and is presently in a transition from the fourth and current region of McCoy to the new region of Myara. At present rates of production, approximately 450 ha is cleared, mined and rehabilitated each year.The value of topsoil in returning a diverse mix of native jarrah forest plant species and supplying nutrients, organic matter and soil biota to rehabilitated areas has long been recognised. Managing the topsoil resource is therefore a critical element in the success of rehabilitation outcomes, but the distribution and dynamic nature of mining operations pose significant planning and logistical challenges. The regionalised approach to mining at Huntly also presents a range of issues for what are, in effect, soil management plans for episodic mine closure. The nature of mining and rehabilitation operations are described, together with the planning processes that Alcoa follows to quantify, track and report on soil movement. A case study of the Huntly mine demonstrates that an integrated operational and life-of-mine planning process is essential for successful and cost-effective mine rehabilitation.CITATION:Hackett, L and Grigg, A, 2014. The risk from fire remains one of the most serious of underground mine disaster scenarios. The impacts of mine fires on the underground ventilation system and the production of toxic gases have been difficult to model and therefore assessments have relied largely on empirical data, historical precedent and subjective opinions. Underground fire modelling software has had limited availability and been technically challenging and time consuming to use especially for routine mine investigations. There has also been no well-accepted set of assumptions for fire modelling in mines, which has resulted in a lack of confidence in adopting its use more widely. This paper describes modelling of three critical fire scenarios in underground hard rock mines: a fire (LHD) in an underground diesel refuelling facility, a fire in an underground explosives magazine and a fire on an underground ore transport conveyor. Modelling was undertaken using VentsimÆs VentFIREÖ fire simulation module. It describes the basis of design, the key assumptions, the methodology used and provides examples of the outputs, conclusions and recommendations. It reviews the impacts of these fires on egress and entrapment strategies in the mine. Some general principles regarding improvements to ventilation circuit design based on this analysis are also recommended. Tunnelling for hydro-electric power projects can be a very challenging component of the overall development. In contrast to urban transportation tunnelling where the logistics for access and supply of power, water and other essentials are readily available, hydropower projects are usually in very remote locations and all necessary plant, equipment, spares and materials need to be brought in and the site must function as a self sufficient unit.For a large scheme the river diversion tunnel(s) are usually on the initial phase critical path in order to meet the non-negotiable deadline of river diversion before the onset of the wet season. A newly formed tunnelling crew, once mobilised to the site for the project, will face the first major learning curve of the project’s systems and logistics during this critical tunnelling activity.Power tunnels convey the water to the turbines in the powerhouse and are usually on the critical path for the main works, especially if the scheme comprises a powerhouse located within an underground cavern. A modern cavern arrangement requires a complex warren of various openings: access adits, ventilation/cable tunnels, shafts, surge tunnels, etc.Hydropower tunnel construction tends to be dominated by tunnel boring machine (TBMs) or drill-and-blast excavation techniques and each has its challenges in very remote locations. TBMs still have long lead times as for any type of project, but additionally require a thorough roads and bridges infrastructure assessment of the country from the port of entry to the site to ensure a problem-free delivery. In some cases the project also requires the establishment of a complete precast concrete segment production facility and the space for creation of laydown areas; there is no ‘just-in-time’ delivery mechanism applicable to typical remote hydropower sites.This paper highlights the technical and risk management considerations in the planning, design and construction of tunnels for hydropower projects. It contrasts the typical factors that govern the design of urban transportation tunnels with those for remote hydropower tunnels. The perspectives of stakeholders are provided including those of international lenders. With examples from large and small scale projects across the globe it provides an insight to all parties and in particular, those tunnellers that are working in the hydropower field for the first time.

Installing ground support correctly is not an easy task, whether lack of operator training, poor ground conditions or underperforming equipment. Confirming the quality of installation can help with planning and remedial works and help to maintain a safe working environment. A 2?m bolt with 700?mm of encapsulation will pass a 10?t pull test (assuming ground conditions permit); however, it will not provide any data of the unencapsulated length and thus the ability to withstand corrosion. Complimentary testing in the form of non-destructive testing (NDT) can provide factual data that leads to the assessment of the quality of the encapsulation. By improving the quality of the encapsulation, the risk of corrosion is reduced, the ground support durability is improved and hence the asset life is enhanced.This paper presents a case study of a trial using the NDT system RokTel™. Installations of varying quality were installed and tested. The characteristics tested were corrosion, load and free length. These characteristics can be tested and assessed for cable bolts, thread bar bolts and split sets. The aim of this paper is to present NDT testing as a viable method for assessing installation quality and ongoing performance of the ground support.CITATION:Jones, B and Chappell, M, 2014. Iron is one of the most exchanged commodities worldwide. Its use for steelmaking explains the growing demand in the metal which remains mainly produced by the mining and the beneficiation of iron ores. Flotation is the most used mineral separation technique worldwide, processing several billion tonnes (Bt) of ore annually, including, in some cases, hematite and magnetite ores. Based on the physicalchemical properties of mineral surfaces, flotation aims to selectively adsorb molecules that render mineral surfaces either hydrophobic or hydrophilic, known as collectors and depressants, respectively. Hydrophobic particles are then recovered in the froth by the injection of gas bubbles travelling up in the cell and attaching the hydrophobic particles. However, despite the popularity and the good performances of flotation, mining industry faces new challenges of decreasing grades and increased mineralogical complexness in ores. Many flotation variables, especially when related to reagent adsorption, remain poorly understood and it becomes necessary to gain knowledge to enhance the existing processes. Molecular modelling techniques like the density functional theory or molecular dynamics simulations (ie Classical molecular dynamics or Ab initio Molecular Dynamics) currently represent powerful tools for different applications in material sciences, like catalysis or depollution purposes. They have recently been successfully applied in the flotation area, with an increasing number of publications dealing with this topic every year. These tools provide crucial information on bulk and surface properties as well as on the adsorption mechanisms of reagents on mineral surfaces, key step in the flotation process, and synergetic effect of collector mixtures. A better understanding of the adsorption mechanisms of flotation reagents, provided by molecular simulations, will help to finely choose flotation reagents, and even lead to the development of new reagents formulations. Overall, these tools enable the discovery of practical and industrial solutions to improve the flotation process, which will undoubtedly help the mining industry to face its future challenges.

Surface mining activities disturb large areas, produce great sediment loads and tend to be a source of water pollution if they are not managed properly. Coal mining in Indonesia has a very high risk of soil erosion because the coal mining areas are generally located in tropical areas with a high average of rainfall (4000 - 6000 mm/year) and use surface mining methods. The main factors affecting erosion risk are climate, soil type, topography, vegetation cover and management factors. Thus, the monitoring of erosion risk in mining areas is very important due to the characteristics of coal mining in Indonesia. The objective of this research is to determine the ability of satellite images (remote sensing data) and geographic information systems (GIS) to provide an accurate and up to date spatial database for the monitoring of erosion risk in surface coal mining areas using the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) method.The erosion risk analysis and spatial data processing are generated by the ArcGIS 9.3 software and need several data, namely: an erosivity map, erodibility map, a slope map, vegetation index map and land management or land cover map. The erosivity map is derived from the rainfall data, whereas the erodibility map is derived from the soil map. The slope map is derived from the SRTM-DEM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission-Digital Elevation Model) and processed using 3D analyst tools. Furthermore, the vegetation index map and land cover map are derived from a satellite image using digital image processing techniques.This preliminary study produced results that show soil erosion monitoring, which is integrated with remote sensing and GIS technologies, has great potential for producing accurate, advance, and low cost erosion risk maps in coal mining areas. This map is very important for getting spatial distributions of the erosion and useful for developing erosion management plans.

In March 2003, Rio Tinto Coal AustraliaÆs (RTCA) new Hail Creek open cut coal mine commenced operations in the Bowen Basin. Hail Creek is a two-seam strip mining operation utilising two 90 m3 draglines and a fleet of excavators and trucks to remove the overburden. All overburden at Hail Creek is blasted prior to excavation. The mine conducts its own drill and blast operations while engaging Dyno Nobel for the provision of explosives supply and loading truck (bulk explosives vehicle û BEV) services. This arrangement was favoured over outsourcing the entire blasting function to a contractor. Subsequent to a value engineering review, the mine set about developing and implementing a blasting operation that did not rely on the need to store bulk quantities of ammonium nitrate on site. There were advantages identified in doing this, in particular the reduction of capital expenditure required and reduced exposure to a number of recently introduced security requirements. This approach also makes sense operationally. The establishment of reload facilities for the BEV close to the blasting location, where turnaround times are kept to a minimum, increases the productivity of the BEV. For this strategy to be successful the logistics of ammonium nitrate supply into the blasting operations has to be well planned and thoroughly executed. This means a robust planning and forecasting arrangement needs to be established with the supplier and transporters of the ammonium nitrate. To date, 80 million bcm of overburden has been blasted at Hail Creek and each year the quantity of overburden requiring blasting is increasing. The purpose of this paper is to present the findings of a study: evaluating the effectiveness to date of the strategy to conduct blasting operations without ammonium nitrate storage on site, and identifying whether there is a limit to which this strategy can operate after which the introduction of bulk ammonium nitrate storage facilities are necessary.

Arc-type volcanic activity has been a major feature of the late Cenozoic geological evolution of the Pacific-Australian plate boundary in the northern New Zealand region. The timelspace distribution patterns of arc-type rocks reflect changes in the nature of the plate boundary as it has evolved. Inception of volcanism began in the north during earliest Miocene times (26 Ma) following ophiolite emplacement and during the next 10 Ma developed into a volcanic arc segment extending south to the present position of the central North Island. The northern part of the arc became extinct about 15 Ma ago, but activity continued in the central (Coromandel) part of the arc until about 5 Ma ago. In late Pliocene and Quaternary times volcanic activity has become concentrated in a northeast trending zone which is collinear with the Tonga-Kermadec Arc.

South Australia pioneered metal mining in Australia and was the main source of copper for several decades. Gold discoveries and mining also contributed significantly to the development of the Colony. Across the State can be seen the holes, the mullock heaps and, in some instances, the remnants of machinery of the past era. In this, the centenary year of the discovery of the Teetulpa goldfield, considered by some to he the most significant discovery of gold in the State, it is appropriate that we should present a paper on the history of gold mining in South Australia. South Australia has not been a major producer of gold with recorded production a little in excess of 15 million grams (15 t). This represents about 0.25 per cent of the Australian total and ranks last of the States of the Commonwealth. The outstand- ing feature of gold production in South Australia has been the succession of short periods of rela- tively high production immediately following a discovery, with payable dirt being quickly exhausted, a fact clearly illustrated by the graph of South Australian gold production (Figure 1).

In August, 1975, North Broken Hill Limited announced that an intersection of 37.3 m of high grade lead-silver-zinc mineralisation, assaying 26.2 per cent Pb, 495 g/tonne Ag and 21.2 per cent Zn had been obtained at its Mine at Broken Hill, 520 m north-east of its No. 3 Shaft and slightly below the No. 36 level (1581 m). Subsequent drilling confirmed the presence of the extension of the Broken Hill Orebody on the north-western side of the Globe Vauxhall Retrograde Shear Zone and defined 1.8 million tonnes of high grade mineralisation. The area containing this mineralisation was subsequently named the Fitzpatrick Area in tribute to the late Mr. W.E. Fitzpatrick a former Member of the the Board and Manager of the Ccnpany's Broken Hill operations. This paper describes in brief the exploration programme leading up to the discovery, the general geology of the area and the proposed future exploration progranme for further extensions of the orebody within the mining leases of North Broken Hill Limited.

An essential component to the management of any process is the measurement of key parameters, used to monitor, control, and provide the feedback necessary for improvement. This paper discusses how data collection and analysis can provide a better understanding of the blasting process, as well as additional control and improved outcomes.The drill and blast process involves the generation and use of information at a number of levels. Comparison of historical parameters and results provides a starting point for the development of ongoing blast designs and a baseline against which future results can be compared. The collection of data during implementation provides a quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) function where potential defects (such as under-drilled or over-charged holes) can be rectified prior to firing. Actual quantities and production rates allow the development of realistic plans and schedules, rather than using inaccurate estimates and targets that lead to unscheduled changes to equipment paths. Over?the past several years there have been a number of technological advances in data collection technology. Drill monitoring instrumentation on blasthole drills provides location information and feedback on rock properties as drilling occurs. Hand held ‘data logger’ technology has also overcome the challenges of working on the bench, such that blasthole measurements can be collected and forwarded directly to the explosive truck. Mine sites are becoming wireless network-enabled allowing the seamless data transfer from the field back to the office, in near real time, as that information is collected. Great strides have also been made in the development of drill and blast software systems which are more user friendly, and yet provide far greater capability to manage the quantity of data generated. The blasting process is critical to the overall mining process and the delivery of a successful blast outcome requires that the blasting process be ‘in control’. The measurement of key parameters can provide the data with which to measure and maintain control of blasting, and allows the validation of performance improvement measures and identification of improvement opportunities.

The Tonkolili banded iron formations (BIF), Sierra Leone, host extensive iron ore deposits which are of economic signifi cance to the seaborne iron ore trade. The deposits are dominated by a strategic JORC compliant mineral resource of 11.6 Bt grading 30.1 per cent Fe comprised of primary magnetite mineralisation in the form of a fresh metamorphosed BIF featuring a uniform mineral assemblage of quartz-magnetite ± ferro-silicate minerals. Pilot plant metallurgical test work has demonstrated that the production of a magnetite concentrate is achievable using the established beneficiation techniques of magnetic separation and flotation. The concentrates arehigh-grade, and suitable for blast furnace or direct reduced iron pellet feed. The major challenge facing the development of such magnetite deposits at industry competitive production rates is the significant capital investment required for process plant and associated infrastructure.Two well-developed weathering zones exist within the deposits, and are associated with the progressive development of a tropical weathering profile overprinting the primary BIF. These zones feature a near surface hard indurated duricrust up to 60 m thick, and a soft progressively developed saprolite between duricrust and fresh BIF. These zones have been found to be amenable to producing iron ore products including DSO lump and sinter fines from the duricrust, and concentrate from the saprolite. Mineral resources sufficient to support commercial production of such iron ore products were defined by an intensive exploration program in 2010.African Minerals Limited has developed a three phase production strategy to progressively self fund the development of the Tonkolili strategic magnetite project by:• commencing a Phase I 12 Mt/a DSO operation in Quarter 4 2011,• increasing production in Phase II to 35 Mt/a with the commissioning of a saprolite beneficitation plant and associated infrastructure upgrades, and• developing a 45 Mt/a Phase III operation producing high-grade magnetite concentrate.The comparatively low capital and operating costs of a duricrust DSO lump and sinter fines operation coupled with its proximity to ground surface make it highly attractive for the generation of early cash flow for the Tonkolili project. Revenue from this early production may be used to selffund the subsequent development of phases requiring progressively more significant beneficiation plant and infrastructure.

"Methane is a signifi cant greenhouse gas. Methane is released from coal seams during the mining process, both in surface and underground operations. This uncontrolled release is termed æfugitive emissionsÆ and in underground mines is transferred to the atmosphere in ventilation air, known as ventilation air methane (VAM). The global VAM emissions are over 369 Mt of CO2-e/a (Butler, 2011; US EPA, 2010). Coal mines may abate this VAM or consider abatement should there be a price on carbon. These fugitive emissions are heading towards ten per cent of AustraliaÆs emissions by 2020 (Department of Climate Change, 2011).There are safety issues involved in VAM destruction. Due to the nature of coal, and coalextraction, unpredicted methane spikes above the lower-explosive-limit (LEL) can occur in theventilation air; for example outburst events or ventilation failure. This could lead to a mine fi re ifthe mine ventilation air was connected to a VAM abatement plant and the risks are left unmitigated.CorkyÆs is working with the mining industry to directly address these safety issues. CorkyÆs calltheir technology VAM RAB, which stands for ventilation air methane regenerative afterburner(VAM RAB). VAM RAB utilises the principles of a thermal oxidiser.This paper discusses fi ve independent layers of protection (ILPs) to fi rst stop methane reachingthe thermal oxidiser and secondly prevent the fl ame front from burning away from the VAMRAB. The test work completed or contemplated includes safety integrity level (SIL) assignmentto various vents, barriers and door systems to prevent a fl ammable mixture reaching the VAMRAB, proven rapid response methane monitoring sourced from the petrochemical industry, anddefl agration experiments to test the eff ectiveness of the passive geometry and active engineeringcontrols. These experiments and SIL assessments indicate that it is possible to safely connect theVAM RAB to a working coal mine.Further work is required to upscale the pilot safety work. Refi nement to the design is possible;for example improvement to safety duct controls once trialled at demonstration scale plus thermalenergy capture for power generation or other applications to provide heat. Nevertheless, thispaper shows how safety issues can be managed by a multilayer of protection approach usingvents, barriers and doors, and appropriate thermal oxidiser geometry."

AustraliaÆs strong position as an aluminium producer and potential magnesium producer combined with rapid market growth in the automotive industry, proximity to Asia and other natural advantages points to considerable opportunity for downstream processing and manufacture with light metals in this country. Development of a vertically integrated light metals industry in Australia needs to be pursued with vigour, as does the continued development of global strategic alliances through the value adding chain.

Martha Mine is an open pit gold-silver mine, located within the township of Waihi, 150km southeast of Auckland and is operated as a joint venture between Normandy Mining Ltd. 67 %) as Manager and Otter Gold Mines Ltd. (33%). The deposit was historically mined, by underground methods from 1888 to 1952, producing 5.5 moz of gold and 30 moz of silver, from 11 mt of ore. The current operation began in 1988, producing, to June 1999 - 867,245 oz of gold and 5.5 moz of silver from 9.5 mt of ore. The licensed reserves were due to be mined out by late 2000. Consents were granted in December 1998 to allow the expansion of the operation through to 2007 accessing an additional 7.5 mt of ore at 3.4 gpt Au and 26.0 gpt Ag for 800,000 oz of gold and 6.4 moz of silver. The key elements of the expansion are: 1. Pit enlargement 2. Upgraded crushing and material handling facilities 3. Construction of a second tailings storage facility 4. Upgraded water treatment capacity 5. Increased operating capacity This paper presents an update of expansion activities to date.

We are moving into an era where we experience the consequences of the skills crisis û namely many resource models have been generated by inexperienced people under pressure to deliver high quality resource estimates in unsupported environments, often without technical mentors. These resource models form the basis of our decision to pursue actual mining. This begs the question: how valid are the resource models that form the basis of our mining decisions? This paper presents various model validation tools such as comparison of input and output statistics, swath plots, sectional or bench comparisons between drill holes and models as well as a variety of other approaches. Each model validation tool currently used in industry is examined:how the tool generates results,what assumptions exist,what constitutes a pass/fail in the test, and what interpretations to consider when using the validation tool. Each validation toolÆs suitability and the inherent flaws in the underlying assumptions are also discussed. These are supported with examples of good versus bad validations. Our principles based reporting codes provide flexibility in how models are generated and what approaches and/or parameters are used to generate resource estimates. This flexibility works well when used by experienced practitioners. However, our reporting codes assume a level of experience not always available in the current skills crisis. This paper seeks to provide minimum model validation prerequisites for model acceptance and suitability, regardless of the resource analystÆs experience. As we move forward, our immediate challenge is to ensure our baseline resource models are material, transparent and competent.

The Bogong Power Development Project in Victoria, Australia involved the construction of a 15 m long mass concrete plug up to 9 m in diameter within the head race tunnel. The plug is critical to theperformance of the scheme as it permanently seals the head race tunnel under approximately 300 m head of water.The location of the plug in the headrace tunnel was determined by a programme of in situ rock stress testing using both hydrofracturing and over coring stress testing methods.In recognition of the importance of the plug, the Head Contract specification requires that its temperature during hydration be controlled using an embedded cooling system. In addition, contact grouting and curtain grouting around the plug cannot commence until thermal contraction was substantially complete.This paper describes the use of bespoke fi nite element software to model the temperature rise in the plug and design mitigation measures to control temperature rise in the plug. These measures include restricting the concrete placing temperature to 10°C, incorporating 39 per cent fly ash in the concrete and installing embedded cooling circuits.Site trials were undertaken to calibrate the model for the proposed concrete mix. The cooling system comprised 25 mm ID pipes forming twelve separate circuits that fed 7°C water from a single chiller unit. The cooling system reduced the peak temperature in the plug to approximately 30°C and the associated risk of early-cracking. The time before contact grouting could commence was shortened to less than two weeks from casting.

The Resource Management Act has been in force now for approximately ten months. This Act, and the Crown Minerals Act which accompanied it, have substantially changed the manner by which mining operations and other resource uses obtain access to resources and are subject to controls of their environmental effects. This paper briefly summarises the key elements of the regulatory provisions of the Resource Management Act. It identifies the types of resource consents required, and discusses these and procedural matters in relation to mining in Otago. It addresses the transitional provisions and highlights inconsistencies and difficulties in the implementation of these provisions. This paper identifies potential future developments in the planning and regulatory environment relating to mining in Otago.

Pulang Copper Mine, being China's largest newly built mine using block caving, boasts an annual production capacity of 12.5 million tons. Production level and roadway stability hold the key to the successful application of block caving. However, with Tong Kuangyu being the only mine in China which has applied such a method, we currently lack relevant experience in the successful application of the method. This paper has studied the influence of different rock mass zonings, fault thickness, fault dip angles, on-site construction quality on the production level, roadway stability of block caving through numerical simulation and analysed the roadway stability in different kinds of support solutions so as to ensure the successful application of block caving in Pulang Copper Mine. The results have shown that the existing support method in Pulang Copper Mine can meet the requirement of roadway support in zone II and III, but could not satisfy the demand in terms of support strength in the relatively fragmented zone I area. When roadway passes through the fault, the deformation of surrounding rock and plastic zone of roadway will gradually decrease with the increase of fault dip angle; the deformation of surrounding rock and plastic zone of roadway will gradually increase with the increase of fault thickness. An ideal support effect can be achieved through the joint support of grouting and bolting when roadway passes through the fault. In the measured model of on-site construction, there is stress concentration in the intersection between the access and transverse drift of ore removal.
