Since 1948, ValeÆs Matte Separation Plant has been successfully using magnetic separation and froth flotation to separate the copper sulfide, nickel sulfide and Ni-Cu metallic alloy contained in Bessemer matte for downstream processing. Though some equipment upgrades have been performed over the years, the flow sheet has generally remained unchanged since the early 1970s. The need to improve metallurgical performance led to the trial of a scalping flotation column to produce a final copper concentrate ahead of the cleaner circuit feed to take advantage of a high degree of copper mineral liberation, reduce cleaner-recleaner circulating loads and decrease the associated loss of selectivity. Plant results indicated that 50 per cent of copper contained in the rougher concentrate could be recovered at final grade target. Results indicate that up to a 1.5 per cent increase in copper recovery to copper concentrate was achieved during the scalper trial due to a reduction in the generation of fine chalcocite which has historically been observed to report to flotation tailings due to surface contamination. Escalating energy and electricity costs have become one of the biggest expenditure drivers in mining operations. During the last eight years, energy costs have trebled when expressed as a percentage of total running cost in South African mines. Power consumption on mines is controlled by three main strategies, namely load clipping where energy use is reduced for parts of the day, load shifting where energy use is shifted to other parts of the day, and energy efficiency where energy use is reduced permanently.To reduce the operating costs of ventilating and cooling underground mines continuously, system optimisation studies must be completed. A part of this paper describes methods that can be used to reduce energy usage by optimising cooling and ventilation systems during planning and in existing operations using network simulation models that accurately reflect the current and planned ventilation conditions. These models are used to examine various options for improving the overall ventilation and cooling efficiency. Furthermore, an overview of refrigeration and cooling practices, and ventilation strategies is presented.Ventilation-on-demand and cooling-on-demand strategies have the potential to reduce both the capital and operating costs associated with mine ventilation and cooling systems. In addition, it has been proven that modern strategies and energy-efficient tactics are technically feasible.It is also important that the correct equipment selection is made. This must be based on the best technology with the highest energy efficiency. Where equipment replacement is being considered, energy efficiency must be one of the key decision drivers.In this paper a number of studies were presented and from the experience and the data presented it is clear that a large financial benefit is possible through optimising ventilation and cooling during the planning of mines or within an existing operating mine.CITATION:du Plessis, J J L, 2015. Mine projects are complex opportunities that demand a constant assessment of uncertainty, ie risk and upside potential. This is because the value of a mine project is typically influenced by many underlying economic and physical uncertainties, such as metal/mineral prices, metal/mineral grades, costs, schedules, quantities, and environmental issues, amongst others, which are not known with much certainty at the beginning of the project. But, is uncertainty an enemy or an ally of the mine planner/analyst? To answer this question, this paper first assesses and elaborates upon the general concept of uncertainty. It then looks at the different sources of uncertainty in a mining project, such as the orebody, costs and product price uncertainties, and their effect on the final project value. Next, a general?review?of current mine evaluation techniques highlighting their limitations when dealing with uncertainty is made. Finally, an extended evaluation and risk management framework that addresses the existing uncertainty in the (greenfield/brownfield) mine evaluation process is proposed. One important characteristic of this framework is that it uses and manages uncertainty in order to generate additional value to the project; this is done through operational and managerial flexibility, which allow mine planners to minimise/maximise project risk/upside-potential giving a more realistic estimate of the projectÆs market value - this is shown in practical and simple examples occurring at different stages of a mine project, such as exploration and operation. The Ekati Diamond MineÖ is CanadaÆs first diamond mine and is located 300 kilometres northeast of Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories. The development of the mine supports sustainable development through the integration of environmental, economic and social considerations with the broad aim of minimising environmental impacts while maximising opportunities and benefits to northern residents and northern businesses. The environmental assessment and regulatory processes for the Ekati Diamond MineÖ were the most extensive seen in the NWT to that date; in Canada only uranium mines receive more attention. In addition to the regulatory requirements, an Environmental Agreement was negotiated with the Governments of Canada and the Northwest Territories to address environmental concerns not covered by existing legislation and regulation. Under the agreement an Independent Environmental Monitoring Agency was set up to oversee the regulatory process and implementation of the Environmental Agreement. Environmental stewardship is implemented through an Operational Environmental Management Plan, part of which includes effects monitoring programs for wildlife and aquatics where available traditional ecological and scientific knowledge are integrated to broaden our understanding of the tundra environment. A Socio-economic Agreement was concluded with the Government of the Northwest Territories to maximise employment and business benefits to the north. Voluntary and confidential Impact Benefits Agreements (IBAs) were also negotiated with four Aboriginal groups who use the area where the mine is located. The intention of the IBAs is to foster development initiatives and a partnership thereby helping to insure that benefits from the project flowed to the Aboriginal groups despite a lack of settled land claims in the region. All these were completed before commercial production in October 1998. Employment targets of 62 per cent residents of the Northwest Territories and 31 per cent Northern Aboriginal have consistently been met thereby ensuring benefits flow to residents of the Northwest Territories. In 2000, $316 million was spent to support operations at the Ekati Diamond MineÖ. Of this, 82.2 per cent of total spending and 26.6 per cent total northern spending was northern and northern Aboriginal businesses, respectively. The environmental and socio-economic monitoring results are reported annually to the responsible government agencies and potentially affected Aboriginal groups. To date, there have not been any significant adverse environmental effects documented and socio-economic targets have been met.

A great range of contacting equipment is used in solvent extraction. However, a tower filled with a regular packing offers many advantages in the direct extraction from slurries. A study was made of the flow of a dense slurry through a packed tower in which the continuous phase was kerosene. The grid type packing, which was preferentially wetted by the slurry, had slats inclined at an angle of 30¦, to the horizontal. On the sur- face of the slats there were uniformly spaced longitudinal indentat- ions. These were of a height slightly less than the film thickness and divided the slurry discharging from the bottom of the slats into a number of uniform streams. When slurry entered the tower it was distributed by means of a troughs and weirs type of distributor. Because of the relatively high slurry velocities that occur at the entry region, it was necess- ary to have the distributor and the first two grids above the solvent level. The interface at the bottom of the tower was located at the mid-point of the bottom grid, so that the slurry entered the interface as a continuous film across the full width of the slats. Using the above system, stable flow with low entrainment was achieved at slurry flow rates of 3.4 mis/cm/sec. This would be equivalent to a flow rate of 177 gallons per minute through a tower of cross-section 4 ft 4 in. by 4 ft 10 in., or 1200 tons per day of solids of specific gravity 2.6 when the pulp density was 65 per cent. Previous tests indicated that a total tower height of about 30 ft would be required for a recovery of better than 99 per cent.

Managing heat stress on Australian mine sites is a complex and enduring challenge due to the combined and variable contribution of environmental conditions, physical activities, and protective equipment. Inappropriately managed, heat stress can place significant physical strain on workers, leading to serious and chronic health issues. Additionally, excessive heat stress can dramatically reduce productivity, with 30 per cent of workers reporting a loss of productivity due to occupational heat strain. In Australia, due to increased absenteeism and reduced work performance, heat strain is estimated to have an annual economic burden of over $8 billion.

The Pueblo Viejo project in the Dominican Republic installed an innovative sample system on its reverse circulation (RC) drilling rig during commissioning and subsequent commencement of operations. As knowledge of the orebody increased with mining and plant production, cost pressures became apparent that raised questions concerning the continued use of RC drilling versus blasthole sampling for ore control.To justify the continued use of RC drilling for grade control, an in-depth study was undertaken to determine the quality of the sample and prove its value-add to the operation.To investigate the differences in sample quality, a complete bench trial was initiated across both ore pits to compare RC drill results with blasthole assays on a side-by-side basis. The results indicated that based on ore block comparison between RC and blasthole sampling, RC identified an additional 20 per cent of high-grade (+ 4.5 g/t Au) ounces.Previous work indicated that Au, Ag and Cu were all elevated in the drill fines at Pueblo Viejo (Goers and Almond, 2012). This previous test work did not consider the quantity of fines in an RC sample therefore new test work was undertaken to include particle size distribution analyses. This study would determine if the inclusion of fines in the sample was occurring and compare the quantity of fines in the sample against other sample systems and blasthole samples.Comparisons between RC samples and blasthole samples indicate that for the RC samples a range of 30–35 per cent of the sample passed 300 mesh as compared to blastholes where the range of the sample passing 300 mesh was 15–30 per cent.This paper includes a case study on the importance of accurate samples and how they have impacted throughput through the pressure oxidation process plant at Pueblo Viejo. The accurate samples provided by RC allow for improved stockpile and blending strategies, showing the importance of accurate samples to manage risk and create value, against the perception that savings can be made at the risk of poor sampling performance.CITATION:Almond, M and Ventura, L, 2017. The efficiency of the Australian and New Zealand stock exchanges relies on a fully informed market: shareholders and investors are fully and transparently informed of all material information relating to the shares. These principles of transparency and materiality are similarly core to the Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (the JORC Code). The JORC (Joint Ore Reserves Committee) Code also includes a principle of competency to ensure that the person providing the material information for public disclosure is suitably qualified and experienced.Since its inclusion into the ASX (Australian Securities Exchange) Listing rules in 1989, the JORC Code has continually improved and evolved in attempts to meet the market’s need for competent, transparent and informed disclosure. The quality and effectiveness of Public Reporting in accordance with the JORC Code is under constant challenge: some practitioners argue there is insufficient regulation, while others argue the need for greater self-regulation.This paper contributes to that discourse by exploring how well the Reporting expectations are met, and, whether Public Reporting in accordance with the JORC Code has a material impact on share-price movement.CITATION:Sterk, R and Coombes, J, 2017. A study has been undertaken into mine ventilation systems currently in use within Australian modern coal longwall (LW) extraction mines. It reviews systems and discusses evolving changes being adopted to address the more complex challenges. There is a strong move to longer panels, wider faces, greater extraction heights, increased production rates, more efficient ventilation and decreased personnel. Each of these changes is motivated by improvement in productivity and generally leads to cost reduction. In addition, mine workings are moving deeper, which results in increased ventilation control issues such as higher total and respirable dust levels, greater seam gas contents in parallel with lower in situ permeabilities, spontaneous combustion and heat management issues. A comprehensive database of Australian LW ventilation practice is analysed. Currently there are a variety of LW panel ventilation circuits used in Australian underground coal mines due to various combinations of seam characteristics, gas emission rates, spontaneous combustion, geological features and surface constraints. The main issues usually addressed in the designing and planning of ventilation circuits for LW panels are airway velocity, gas concentrations, LW cutting methods (eg Bi-di, Uni-di or half web), ventilation of control devices, pressure differentials and leakage paths and understanding gas concentrations across the length and width of the goaf. If the ventilation circuit can manage the applied contaminant load (gases, heat and dust) at an acceptable cost and circuit duty, then supplementary controls, such as gas drainage, refrigeration and dust sprays and scrubbers, may not be required. Western Metals Mt Gordon Operation is a copper mine and processing plant situated 120 kilometres north of Mt Isa. The unique Mt Gordon copper process utilises a whole of ore acid/ferric pressure leach to produce copper cathode from the Esperanza massive sulfide copper orebody. Esperanza ore contains chalcocite, covellite and minor chalcopyrite hosted in a massive pyrite matrix. These ore stocks will be depleted in late 2003. Recently the process circuit has been upgraded to allow the treatment of lower grade Mammoth ores. These include the installation of a ball mill to complement the existing SAG mill, a single stage rougher flotation circuit and a tailings thickener. The leach bleed neutralisation plant was also upgraded at this time. Commissioning of these new circuits occurred in March 2003 and involved all the challenges of ensuring current production levels were successfully maintained while new process steps were incorporated into the whole circuit. This paper explains the background flow sheet of the patented Mt Gordon process and the reasoning behind the enhancements required for an already successful copper leaching circuit. Included are discussion of the influences of the new ores on individual process components such as comminution, leach chemistry and solid/liquid separation. Longer term ore processing options are also discussed.

"Determining the deportment of economic and environmentally significant elements in sulfidic mine materials (eg ore, gangue and waste) requires the use of advanced microanalytical techniques, including electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS). Sulfidic boulders were sampled from an acid rock drainage impacted ephemeral stream adjacent to historical copper-silver workings at Baal Gammon, northern Queensland. The abundance and deportment of a range of trace elements and precious metals were analysed in these samples. Whilst many of these elements represent a potential environmental risk if leached from sulfidic rocks into streams in the surficial environment, significantly some of these elements (eg In, Sb and Co) represent specialised metals that are currently considered to be in critical supply.Sulfidic waste rock material at Baal Gammon is dominated by chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite and pyrite. Microanalytical investigations revealed that chalcopyrite contains significant quantities of In, Sn, Ag and Zn either substituted directly into the crystal lattice or occurring as discrete sphalerite and stannite inclusions. Arsenopyrite, which may comprise more than 50 per cent of some boulders, is notably enriched in Sb, Co and Ni but also contains inclusions of sphalerite, chalcopyrite and stannite. In contrast, pyrrhotite contains no trace elements of economic significance, but instead represents a likely contributor to acid generation during oxidation in the surficial environment. Trace metals (eg In, Sb, Co, Ni, Zn) are liberated during sulfide oxidation of these boulders in the surficial environment, generating a metal-rich, low-pH leachate.Fe-oxides precipitated as rinds on the surface of these boulders under low pH conditions also contain abundant As, Bi, Sn, Cu and Zn. Abandoned or historical mines represent potential sources of metalliferous drainage that poses potential environmental risks to water and habitats. The current boom being experienced by mining, coupled with a shortage of professionals, will mean those in the industry will have many choices. It may be easy to become carried away and run with the highest bid or the biggest promise. Without planning, however, the ærightÆ opportunity may be missed and there may be some long-term consequences. There are many choices of paths in the industry to suit work preferences, life cycles and to achieve a balanced life. People in mining have changed jobs and companies frequently û which means new leaders need to take greater responsibility in charting their own direction. Career options need to be carefully assessed and aligned to personal values and preferences. Emphasis is given on gaining site experience early on.This paper examines strategies for career planning, which incorporate life cycles, education and what is meant by a balanced lifestyle. Two tools are identified as being helpful in ensuring strategies can be successfully executed. They are ævisioningÆ and æinfluenceÆ.To make the mining industry more attractive, we need more creative solutions around advances in technology and organisation of work. It also needs the input and leadership of new entrants in to the industry to assist in its survival. New leaders are encouraged to voice a vision and effectively influence their companies. New leaders have little authority and need to learn how to effectively influence. We as a mining industry need to listen, be open-minded and give it a go.

Material transport plays a significant role in the efficiency of horizontal grinding mills - autogenous (AG)/semi-autogenous (SAG)/ball mills. The magnitude of benefits that can be achieved with efficient material transport in AG/SAG mills has been demonstrated in a greenfield milling operation at Mirabela MineratpoÆs SantaRita Nickel operation located in north eastern Bahia in Brazil. This grinding circuit was commissioned in October 2009, was designed as a typical SABC circuit to grind 4.6 Mt/a (575 t/h) to produce a P80 of 125 ¦m with ten to 12 per cent ball charge in the SAG mill. However, it has been operating as an ABC circuit without any grinding media in SAG mill. The nameplate design capacity was achieved in few days and was gradually increased to an average of +800 t/h, still operating in ABC mode. The Santa Rita grinding circuit consists of one 30 ft + 15.4 ft 8.5 MW SAG mill fitted with Outotec patented Turbo Pulp Lifters (TPLÖ) in closed circuit with a HP400 short head pebble crusher and one 20 ft + 28.4 ft 5.5 MW Ball Mill in closed circuit with a Warman cyclone cluster fitted with 10 + 26 in CAVEX cyclones. This paper examines the comminution design process, operating philosophies, experiences, post commissioning optimisation and future development works. A brief history of the mineral sands industry is given from a radiation protection standpoint, with gamma radiation and inhalation of radioactive dust being identified as the main sources of radiation exposure of persons working in the plants. The principal sources of gamma radiation exposure are identified and the history of early bagging methods is discussed. The concept of ALARA is introduced and the impact of the "bulka bags" (and more effective monazite storage facilities) are detailed as illustrative examples of dose minimization, together with the requirements for the transport of monazite. The dose from radiation received from inhaled dust is dependent on a number of parameters of the dust, some of which are not well known. ICRP 30 (1978) makes recommendations relating to the intake of radionuclides by workers. These recommendations are discussed with respect to the inhalation of dust containing thorium. The possible pathways of radioactive material throughout the body are also described. The effect of having parameters that differ from ICRP 30 is discussed and suggestions are made relating to measurements that can be carried out to more accurately determine these parameters. Since in some instances the exposures to dust yield personal doses which may exceed the annual ICRP 30 based limits, it is necessary to define more accurately parameters of the dust so as to determine more accurately personal Doses.

Change and its relationship with the introduction of new technology is a constant of human history. The mining industry has many examples of this relationship. This record contrasts with its present day struggles to move beyond a public perception of being just ‘dirty, dumb and dangerous’. The drivers for the introduction of new technology are frequently listed as the occupational health and safety of people working in the mines, reductions in direct operating costs, and increases in productivity.This paper discusses the issues that a mining business needs to deal with to implement new technology with the best possible conditions for success. It comments on how the strategic and tactical components of technology planning relate to and interact with change management. The central discussion is directed at the role that people play in the successful implementation of new technology. The introduction of autonomous underground haulage equipment provides a background for the discussion of this topic.The paper uses case study references, equipment supplier information and research findings. Computer simulation modelling (discrete event) has been used at Olympic Dam (OD) to model the handling of ore from the point of extraction at the stope drawpoint through to the ore stockpile on the surface. Computer simulation is a well accepted tool for modelling the behaviour of such large and complex operating systems. It is a particularly useful technique in complex operations where there are multiple interactions between the inputs and outputs of various unit operations. In this instance it can be utilised during the early stages of a project, for example, as part of the business case definition phase or the early engineering phase. A well constructed and tested simulation model provides a sound base upon which informed business decisions can be made. Furthermore, the behaviour of the model with varying inputs can help build a solid understanding of how the asset behaves when varying inputs and constraints are imposed upon it and, as a result, the major points of leverage that designers and operations personnel have to affect the real world behaviour of those assets. Better decisions can be made when the right facts can be examined, various options explored and conclusions tested. Simulation modelling is one of the tools available to make this process work.

High fluid pressures and deformation have been instrumental in the formation of high-grade gold lodes at the Archaean granite greenstone 12 Moz Sunrise Dam gold deposit in Western Australia. Historically, predicting the location of these lodes has been difficult due to the irregular nature and high-grade nugget characteristics of the deposit. Recent exploration successes and the discovery of the Vogue system have led to an improved knowledge of the deep extents of the mine. This new structural and gold distribution data has enabled a new 3D interpretation of the system and has provided a better insight into the links between deformation, fluid pressure evolution and gold deposition. Here we employ 3D geomechanical and coupled fluid flow modelling to better constrain areas of high strain partitioning, rheological failure and focused fluid flow, which provides a substantially increased predictive capacity for further within-mine exploration. The localisation of deformation in and around the main felsic porphyry and major shallow shear zones provides critical insights into fluid pathways that have contributed to the distribution of fracture networks and ultimately gold deposition during late stage deformation events. Understanding the relationship between deformation events, fluid pressure evolution and the partitioning of strain is paramount in understanding the distribution of gold and for focusing on future target areas.CITATION:McLellan, J G, Blenkinsop, T G and Nugus, M J, 2013. This paper addresses a gap in longwall multi-seam interactions and their predictions, providing a case study for future multi-seam operations for both anticipated conditions and a method for understanding the changes in stress regime. Multiple panels were modelled with the results analysed and compared to panel experiences to validate the parameters and properties. The software chosen (LaModel) is a numerical modelling package designed to model stresses and displacements on thin deposits. It utilises a displacement-discontinuity variation of the boundary-element method and has been used extensively throughout both the United States and Australia in multi-seam operations. Analysis of the results demonstrates a clear correlation with the above workings and regions of significant strata instability. This provides the opportunity going forward to analyse new models and incorporate into mine planning and geotechnical designs. Continuous site-based assessment should be undertaken at multi-seam operations to better understand and quantify likely vertical stress levels within the workings. With a detailed analysis of models prior to extraction and a review of models post extraction. Further research is required as LaModel is limited to vertical stress and it is likely that interactions impact both the horizontal and shear stress regime. 3-dimensional modelling could further assist in this understanding, combined with a thorough stress monitoring regime. The treatment of mixed lead carbonate and lead sulphide concentrates at Mount Isa presents a problem which is unique ,in the lead smelting world; a problem whose solution is far from simple, and is not yet complete. Two years of study under plant conditions have definitely proved, however, that a most satisfactory sinter can be made in a single-pass roast.The object of this paper is to present a brief record of the development of the single-pass roast and a resume of current practice in the smelting plant. The sintering operation is discussed in greater detail, as it is upon this phase of the work that every item in the smelter operating programme depends.The smelter, to-day, presents a very much simplified layout, equipped for economical, straightforward operation, requiring, however, very careful and constant supervision, due to the extreme delicacy of the sintering operation and to the rapid and wide variati9n in the nature of the concentrates which are to be handled.

With the burgeoning opportunities for new gold mines to be developed the opportunity now exists for a reassessment of the optimal processing path for these gold ores. Projects have traditionally followed the path of whole ore cyanidation with either Carbon In Pulp (CIP), Carbon In Leach (CIL) or Merrill Crowe. The challenge ahead is whether these traditional processing methods are the best option for stakeholders, or to go beyond CIP and use a combination of currently available technologies that can be used to provide gold recovery at a significantly reduced capital cost and minimal deleterious impact on the environment. Either stand alone or combinations of gravity concentration and flotation, can produce a gold bearing concentrate that can then be fed directly to a batch or continuous intensive cyanidation unit. Treatment of a gravity/flotation concentrate by intensive cyanidation may be processed by the InLine Leach Reactor (ILR) developed by Gekko Systems of Australia. The advantages of the technology combining gravity/flotation followed by intensive cyanidation are significantly reduced capital costs; improved safety due to reduced cyanide inventories; the majority of tailings un-contaminated by cyanide; less energy required due to an opportunity for an increase in grind size û reducing green house gas emissions; detoxification of concentrate tailings can minimise tailings disposal and containment requirements.
