Understanding the real utilisation of the available volumetric capacity of a conveyor is key to unlocking latent capacity or ‘debottlenecking’ existing plant. Conveyors are typically designed on the basis of conservative density and ore surcharge angle specifications, and consequently there is often latent volumetric capacity available.Laser scanning measurements of conveyor ore profiles has been undertaken on iron ore conveyors to gain an understanding of the actual surcharge angle and the available edge clearances. Iron ore producers seeking to extract maximum production from their assets have used these measurements to debottleneck existing plant and to revise the design criteria for future plant. The benefit is that latent capacity of existing plant can be unlocked and smaller and cheaper conveyors can be designed for future plant, maximising the return on capital. The knowledge in the field has been reviewed by literature studies, and using experience from personal research in sublevel caving. There is a lot of material regarding gravity flow of fine grained materials in bins, but the theory of flow for these materials are normally not applicable for coarse blasted rock. This study was therefore concentrated towards coarse rock fragments created after blasting in orebodies. The goal for this study was to make a report of known knowledge, and identify what we have to learn more about. The Bergmark-Roos theory, which was a paradigm shift in the science of gravity flow, is today the best mathematical theory for calculation of the drawbody for a homogenous material or when we wish to simulate the mean drawbody for a large number of draws. The Bergmark-Roos theory must however be improved, so it can take into account the flow pipe effect. When this is done it will be possible to construct a 3D computer model for calculation of ore extraction versus amount of loaded ore and waste. It is also necessary to find the 3D shape of the flow cone to be able to calculate the 3D ore rest that normally develops on footwalls. Calculations should be done for the draw on several sublevels including determination of the ore losses and temporary ore rests. First when this computer model is developed optimisation of ore recovery and waste rock dilution can start for a given orebody. The author points out the importance for international co-operation and standardisation of methods for determination of material properties. More field tests and model blasting tests should also be done. When enough knowledge is gathered, a handbook of the optimisation of sublevel and block caving should be written.

Obtaining a representative sample of bulk materials in process industries is critical to providing valid data for process control and custody transfer (valuation). The accuracy of a sample, that is to say how well the sample represents the material in the process, is directly related to how well the process can be controlled and to how much a product may be worth. Sampling accuracy then is in fact related to bottom line profitability.Sampling theory offers information and equations on how to take a representative sample from a process, however, the actual practice of extracting a sample from the process can be more of an art.Key sampling variables include product specifications such as bulk density, particle distribution, material conveyance, practical sampler location, sampler type and sample frequency and volume/mass.This paper discusses basic sampling theory, sampling methods, types of samplers, how to develop a ‘real world’ sampling system and current manual and automated samplers.Key points include ‘practical precision and variance’, material properties, flow properties, direct sampling versus indirect sampling, sampler types and applications.CITATION:Powalisz, J E, 2014. This paper describes the new iron and steelmaking process recently commissioned at NZ Steel. Ironsand mined and concentrated at Waikato North head is slurry pumped 18 km to the company's Glenbrook works. Ironmaking includes the direct reduction process pioneered at Glenbrook in the 1970s and a new continuous electric melter. The molten, high carbon pig iron produced is then fed to a vanadium recovery unit and on to the KOBM oxygen steelmaking vessel. Steel is cast into billets or slabs. The new plant, which is the first stage of a fully integrated works at Glenbrook, raises New Zealand Steel's production capacity from 150 000 t/y to 750 000 t/y.

Bulk cargoes, including iron ore fines, must be shipped according to the rules agreed by the member states of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). One critical safety measure is the transportable moisture limit (T?ML) required for Group A cargoes (cargoes that may liquefy). A number of shipping incidents involving iron ore fines from India, where liquefaction of the cargo was suspected to be the cause, have brought the issue of iron ore fines T?ML into the spotlight. Extensive research has been undertaken by the major iron ore producers from Australia and Brazil to support the IMO in developing regulations for the shipment of iron ore fines. To this end, iron ore companies sponsored the AMIRA P1097 project to establish a modified T?ML test approach specific to iron ore fines. The project was undertaken by TUNRA Bulk Solids, CSIRO’s Centre for Bulk Solids and Particulate Technology and the University of Auckland, with project leadership provided by Creative Process Innovation. Like many industries the coal mining industry has, since the beginning of this century, undergone many changes. Technological advances and the increasing demand for fossil fuels have introduced new mining methods and techniques which allow the extraction of thicker and deeper coal seams at higher rates of production. Most new methods of mining (or for that matter any other processes) introduce problems which the engineers of the industry are expected to face and resolve. Unfortunately, spontaneous combustion has plagued the coal mining industry since the first attempts to mine coal, and is no doubt partly responsible for the reputation that coal mining is a hazardous industry. The financial loss and toll of human lives due to the occurrence of spontaneous combustion of coal in coal mines is enormous, if not incalculable. Its occurrence today is less likely to claim lives, due to both improved methods of working and in the detection of spontaneous combustion sites.

Cyanide-extractable gold is far more meaningful in the definition of ore, and control of extraction, than fire- assayable or aqua regia digestible gold. The use of cyanide- extractable gold addresses the significant problems of over- as well as under-assaying by fire and aqua regia digests. The problems of conventional control or diagnostic cyanidation extractions: lengthy extraction, and masking by pregrobbing in cyanidation extractions for assay purposes; are surmounted with a novel activator - Leach WELL. Full extraction of liberated gold, insignificantly affected by preg-robbers, can now be achieved within 30 minutes. This can assist in reducing common gold losses presently often hidden by inappropriate mine call factors, and/or high grade cut values. This paper includes a discussion of fundamental mechanisms of cyanidation, preg- and assay-robbing, which underlie the phenomena Involved.

This paper presents information on the processing of minerals by decrepitation that can be an integral part of their mineral dressing. In the case of carbonates, processing by decrepitation is a special operation that has its objective as concentration of the oxide. Selective fragmentation of magnesite brought about by decrepitation uses pseudomorphosis which was observed at thermal decomposition of carbonates. By decrepitation of magnesite high-grade MgO concentrates were obtained with MgO contents above 80 per cent. With the sideritic ores a very important phenomenon was observed consisting in the removal of quartz in the fragmented fine-grained product which favourably affect pelletisation of the fines. The selective concentration of the MgO product brought about by thermal decomposition of dolomite accompanied with decrepitation was negligible.

Comalco Limited has recently completed construction of a $50 million kaolin plant at the site of its bauxite mining and industrial minerals operations at Weipa. The plant will produce 100,000 tonnes per annum of coating grade kaolin for the paper industry.Comalco produced the first coating kaolin from the deposit in 1979 on a trial basis. Since then a variety of quality coating grades with specific particle ize distributions and brightness values have been prepared.Extensive drilling and bulk sampling of the deposit over eight years has shown that the orebody is large and of a high grade suitable for the production of premium quality coating kaolins.The processing plant technology was developed by Comalco in association with the European kaolin and equipment producer Amberger Kaolinwerke GmbH (AKW).The Weipa kaolin plant is the first of this size to be built in the Pacific Basin region and it will offer the region's paper-coating mills a stable and reliable source of high-quality kaolin, shipped from an established bulk loading port. The paper provides an overview of the development of the kaolin investment, the nature of the production process and details the project management procedure used for the design, construction and commissioning of the plant. Three areas of significant interest, the gas turbine fired pray dryer, the moving bridge shiploader and the use of aerobelt conveyors on the project are detailed.

The Favona adularia-sericite epithermal Au-Ag deposit is located at the southern end of the Hauraki Goldfield, about one kilometre southeast of the world-class Martha deposit. The deposit occurs in Late Miocene andesitic lava flows and local dacitic tuffs of the Waipupu Formation. In some places, post-mineralisation ash fall and ignimbrite, up to 50 m thick, cover mineralised rocks and andesite. We collected soils samples from 110 sites along eight traverses over Favona, and from three regional lines: two south of Favona, and one north of Favona.   Analyses of soils identify prominent enhanced concentrations of Au, Ag, and Hg, and lower enrichments of Sb and As. At Favona, Au and Ag appear to be highly anomalous in areas over mineralisation with Au concentrations greater than 100 ppb and Ag concentrations greater than 1000 ppb, whereas background concentrations are approximately 5 ppb and 50 ppb respectively. The background concentrations of Hg in soils are approximately 100 - 200 ppb, but in mineralised areas, Hg generally exceeds 200 ppb, and some soils contain greater than 600 ppb. Antimony shows enrichments, although weak, above known veins and As locally shows some enrichment above areas of known mineralisation. Therefore, soil sampling at Favona defines geochemical anomalies that correlate with the position of known mineralisation at depth. Thus, there is strong empirical support for the use of Au, Ag and Hg, and possibly Sb and As geochemistry to identify mineralised trends associated with buried deposits at other epithermal prospects.

Probabilistic seismic hazard analyses (PSHA) have now gained wide acceptance in the development of design criteria for major projects. When used with regional criteria the procedures have also allowed the preparation of more rational seismic zoning maps. Seismic zoning maps using various levels of results from PSHA studies around the Pacific Rim now include Canada, Indonesia, New Zealand and the United States. Some Pacific Rim countries such as Chile where the seismic exposure is dominated by subduction events have no subdivision into separate zones.Approaches to risk based zoning are being considered in several Pacific Rim countries including Australia. Australian studies must face problems similar to parts of the Eastern United States where seismic activity is low with irregular and infrequent occurrences of moderately large earthquakes. The perception of the seismic exposure by both regulatory agencies and the public at large is different when considering areas of low seismicity. There is therefore a need to make different interpretations of the results of PSHA studies in these areas of low seismicity. The aim of this paper is to explore some of these differences by comparing the results from two site specific studies from areas with widely differing seismic activity rates.

Many flotation operations need to improve liberation to increase recovery, yet often plant operators are concerned that finer grinding will produce æslimesÆ with low flotation recovery. Yet simple circuits can be designed to give good liberation and excellent fines recovery. The economics of fine grinding has changed fundamentally with new stirred milling processes like the IsaMill. This has also transformed flotation design due to the clean surfaces produced in the inert grinding environment and the narrow size distribution produced by the IsaMill. Past poor experiences with æovergrindingÆ in flotation circuits was often due to the wide size distribution and the degradation of mineral surfaces produced by conventional devices using steel media, like ball mills and tower mills. The correct practice is to design both grinding and flotation together to suit the liberation characteristics of the ore. This may result in several stages of grinding and flotation, recovering mineral as soon as it is liberated, then applying further grinding energy only to those particles that still need liberation. Flotation then occurs in relatively narrow size bands and with minerals with similar liberation characteristics. Though the circuit may look more complex on paper, in reality it is far simpler to operate since each section performs predicably. Circuit design also needs to address materials handling. Finer particles affect froth handling and dewatering, but can still be easily handled by standard products with careful attention to design of launders, pumps and pumpboxes, and de-aeration before thickening and filtering. Excellent examples of designing circuits to include ultrafine grinding include Mt Isa and McArthur River (MRM). In the last decade these operations have produced over ten million tonnes of concentrate with an average grain size below 10 ¦m and above 80 per cent recovery. At Mt Isa, zinc recovery was increased by ten per cent by applying fine grinding to existing poorly liberated streams. In fact, grinding finer in the IsaMill actually improved the recovery of fine particles by ten per cent, and maximum particle flotation recovery occurs for 10 ¦m particles. A more recent example is the flotation of Platinum Group Metals (PGMs). The use of conventional ball or tower milling to improve liberation is severely limited by the impact of commonly associated chromite on classification, and degradation of flotation performance by the steel grinding environment. The ability of open circuit IsaMills to deliver a narrowly sized ultrafine product with clean mineral surfaces is transforming the design of platinum flotation circuits. The science and practice of fine-grained flotation is now thoroughly proven. The availability of the 2.6 MW IsaMill has made ultra fine grinding a practical tool for flotation plant design. It is expected to become a standard choice for future applications of both fine-grained ores and for minerals with difficult flotation characteristics.

The continuous casting of zinc alloys has been of fundamental importance for many years in the production of a number of products, including sheet for architectural applications, battery cans for dry cells and wire for metallising. The intrinsic benefits of continuous casting, including efficiency and high tonnage capability, uniformity of metallurgical structure and properties, and absence of voids and other defects, have contributed to the success of these products. Less well known, but of growing importance, is the more recent application of continuous casting technology to the production of zinc alloy bar stock products, including bearing stock, machining bar stock, forging stock and cathodic protection anodes. A wide range of zinc alloys are now continuously cast in a variety of cross sectional shapes and sizes to suit the diverse characteristics of these products. Of particular significance are the introduction of hollow zinc-aluminum bearing stock, and the availability of zinc alloy machining bar stock for hydraulic applications and for producing prototypes of zinc alloy pressure die castings. In addition to the traditional benefits, continuous casting provides special properties which are important in the application of these bar stock products. The list of successful applications of continuously cast zinc alloy bar stock is growing rapidly, and the market potential for resultant new zinc applications appears to be significant.

In the pyrometallurgical process of secondary lead recycling, a desulfurising agent, such as Na2CO3 is added to minimise the emissions of sulfur into the atmosphere, while silica is introduced into the smelter as a fluxing material. Subsequently, a significant amount of Na2O and SiO2 remains in the downstream reverberatory furnace and blast furnace slags. However, there is limited understanding of the thermodynamic behaviour of silicate-based lead slags rich in Na2O, posing challenges in accurately determining the optimal condition for targeted metal recovery and final slag composition. In this work, the equilibrium phase relations of the PbO-Na2O-SiO2 system in the primary phase field of Na2SiO3 are studied from 800 to 1000°C via equilibration-quenching method. Samples with different compositions were prepared and held in platinum capsules in air at these temperatures to reach equilibrium. The equilibrated samples were subsequently quenched and the phase compositions were measured by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). The results were then compared to those of previous studies and any discrepancies were resolved.

Each of us has a vision of what the future mine will be and, generally, these visions have many similarities and some differences. One of the major discrepancies in visions of the future mine is not the ultimate goal but the path to achieve it. Many of the future concepts require a radical re-thinking of how things are and will be done yet. So how do we reach this visionary future mine? We need a path that satisfies both our future aspirations of a high tech gee-whiz operated from our iPads and the unfortunately mundane approach that says ‘we must know the method works, ie nothing new’.This paper explores how, within a research based organisation, we firstly set our ultimate goal and then divide the path into realistic technology development chunks that would appeal to mining companies to progress within their organisational constraints. Through examples, such as, automated LHDs, communications systems, surveying and localisation, rock cutting and geological sensing, we illustrate how this path will get us from the here and now to the out there future.This paper also demonstrates CSIRO’s short, medium and long-term research in many of the areas needed to create the Future Mine: mining methods, automation and remote control, mine communications, mapping and mission planning, geological sensing and, importantly, human-system integration, which examines how to effectively present data as information to operators and supervisors in an intelligent and useful manner.

The need to recover metals from low grade deposits, old tailings, etc., combined with improvements in equipment design and the development of new extractants, has resulted in solvent extraction (SX) metal recovery reaching new importance (Webster & Ferron, 1993). The basic principle of solvent extraction is the use of an equilibrium system in which a metal ion is transferred from an aqueous phase into an organic phase, (Equation 1), (Ritcey, 1984). M + E ME . (1) The organic extractant (E) is usually specific for a certain metal ion (M) and forms a metal complex in the organic phase, leaving the impurities behind in the aqueous phase. To recover the metal, the equilibrium is reversed and the metal ion is transferred back from the organic to another aqueous phase in a process called stripping. The metal is then recovered from the aqueous strip solution, usually by electrowinning.

The JORC Code lists the three core principles of Transparency, Materiality and Competency as fundamental to how mineral estimates are publicly reported. But where the principles of Transparency and Materiality can be considered conscious choices underlying decisions at the point of disclosure, Competency is a self-declared position statement based on one’s confidence to defend a technical position (as well as the functional pre-requisites of institute membership and a minimum of five years relevant experience).Developing competency in the mining industry is an ad hoc process, generally left to the individual to chart through a process of osmosis from personal work experiences that lead to a sufficient level of confidence. Companies that actually present professional development programs leading to reporting competency are rare. And even once a person has followed a program, there is no specific outline of what constitutes technical competence.No doubt, there are persons signing off on mineral statements who would benefit from developing and/or updating their technical skills (they may not even be aware of unmastered skills). Equally, there are technical practitioners who are sufficiently competent, but lack the confidence to step up and publicly report their estimates. Confidence in one’s own abilities plays a significant role in deciding when one is ready for the responsibility of submitting mineral estimates for public consumption. In addition, a person’s organisational support, such as the availability of suitable peers and professional development programs, and opportunities to learn from a variety of technical projects contribute to developing relevant experience. Increased exposure in both technical breadth and depth enhance confidence in one’s ability and competence.The mining industry provides numerous opportunities through direct and indirect means to develop the competency underpinning a stable reporting code. This paper examines a theoretical framework and associated processes that could be used to examine how the mining industry, companies and individuals collaborate to develop this vague principle of competency. This paper seeks to initiate research with the express purpose of enabling more effective and efficient development of reporting competency in our industry.

"The application of automated sampling techniques can help to provide a representative sample of process fluids and slurries that provide data for controlling process, custody transfer and quality assurance and quality control purposes.The automation of sampling provides a more consistent and reliable sampling process and eliminates many of the human-induced errors. Automated sampling can also provide a higher degree of safety in the plant/processing environment as well as better bottom-line results.Automated, fixed volume samplers can provide a very representative sample by integrating many small ‘grabs’ of sample from a process. Automated samplers can be controlled in a variety of ways to optimise the sampling process, including:cycle ratedwell timetotal volume.Properly selected and applied, an automated sampler can effectively isolate the operator from the process fluid during sampling and, to a great degree, during sample container collection.A variety of materials of construction, including seals, are available to handle demanding mining applications. In the narrow stopes of South African gold mines, rockbreaking is carried out by drilling and blasting with safety fuse and igniter cord being used as the initiation system. The fuse/gniter cord system is used primarily because of its low cost, however several limitations of this method include: inaccurate delay time, unreliable firing, inflexible application to varied configurations, and the absence of dynamic interaction between holes. Alternative initiation systems that incorporate millisecond timing are being developed to overcome the limitations of fuse(tgniter cord systems. Current investigations by the Stoping Technology Division of the Chamber of Mines Research Organization (COMRO) into the effects of millisecond initiation are being conducted at a deep test site. Experimental blasts using various millisecond delays and the independent firing of holes with fuse/igniter cord are being studied in order to quantify the influence of delay time on the blasting process and to identify the best methods of applying millisecond initiation systems. The effect of design variables such as delay time, hole firing pattern, stemming, and panel layout are discussed. Blast results including throw distance and direction, muckpile profile and rock cleaning times are used in the discussion of different combinations of blasting variables.

Gold mineralisation at Macraes occurs as late quartz-carbonate veins within a body of sheared and hydrothermally altered Otago Schist, the Intrashear Schist. The alteration is characterised by the presence of rutile and the absence of epidote and titanite, indicative of an alteration fluid containing >10 mol per cent CO2. In areas of high strain, a fabric of black microshears develops, gradational to mylonitic cataclasite in the high strain zone adjacent to the hanging wall of the duplex shear zone. The microshears contain hydrothermal graphite, inferred to have been deposited from a methane-rich fluid. The mylonitic cataclasite is characterised by abundant pyrite, the absence of albite and extreme grain size reduction. Gold recovery in the CIL processing plant at Macraes can drop to 50 per cent or lower for some unfavourable ore types. Preg-robbing by a component in the ore, possibly graphite, was suspected as the cause. Mylonitic cataclasite was identified as the lithology responsible for the poor recoveries, with the capacity to bind about 30 ppm of gold in the leach tanks. A program of detailed geochemistry and quantitative grain-size measurement using Coulter analysis was undertaken to identify specific mineralogical factors associated with preg-robbing. The results indicate that pyrite, graphite, and extreme grain-size reduction are the factors associated with highly preg-robbing ores at Macraes. The evolution of the mylonitic cataclasite is accompanied by strong potassium enrichment, as muscovite, and depletion in sodium as albite is removed. This suggests that a simple powder XRD ratio of the albite to illite peaks would suffice to distinguish the preg-robbing ore for grade-control purposes.
