The New Zealand (NZ) Transport Agency’s Waterview Connection will complete Auckland’s Western Ring Route, a 47 km north–south motorway alternative to Stage Highway 1. The project is being delivered by the Well-Connected Alliance comprising the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), Fletcher Construction, McConnell Dowell Constructors, Obayashi Corporation, Parsons Brinckerhoff NZ, Beca Infrastructure and Tonkin & Taylor.The project involves construction of 5 km of new motorway, nearly half of it underground connecting State Highway 20 (SH20) to State Highway 16 (SH16). The underground portion of the project incorporates twin 13.2 m inside diameter (ID) tunnels 2.4 km long, each carrying three traffic lanes, one for north-bound traffic and one for south-bound traffic. The tunnels are being driven by a 14.46 m outside diameter (OD) 2400 t, tunnel boring machine (TBM) shield that was assembled and launched at the southern portal. It will be turned and re-launched at the northern portal for the return drive to the southern portal where it will be disassembled. This paper presents two major temporary works elements contributing to the successful launch of the TBM: the TBM assembly crane platform and the TBM shove frame and associated components.Tunnel boring machine shield assembly – crane platformThe TBM shield was delivered to site in subassemblies ranging in weight from 100 to 380 t. It was initially proposed to use a 750 t crawler crane sitting above the tunnel portal headwall to assemble and disassemble the TBM. However, this did not have sufficient capacity to allow the TBM shield to advance clear of the tunnel before disassembly commences. To reduce the crane’s working radius a temporary steel crane platform was developed that is supported on the side walls of the tunnel approach trench. This has enabled a smaller, less expensive, 600 t crawler crane to be used and will allow the TBM shield to clear the tunnel before disassembly.Tunnel boring machine launch – temporary worksTo launch the TBM a purpose built steel frame was required for the TBM thrust rams to react against. The shove frame had to be able to transfer the thrust loads from the TBM shield to the ground below and thrust wall behind. A range of potential thrust loads and jacking patterns were examined to develop the design load cases for the shove frame. The shove frame was used to launch the TBM at the southern portal and to re-launch it at the northern portal. Cu-Au porphyry deposits are large tonnage low-grade resources dependent on processing large volumes of material. The ability to understand and predict comminution performance is critical, as it is frequently the rate-limiting step during processing. Parameters required from geometallurgical mapping and modelling of comminution performance are: A×b processing domains based on impact breakage variability, and BMWi processing domains showing grind response variability which lead to Mine throughput domains for a specific comminution circuit configuration. Due to the cost and/or large sample requirements of traditional comminution tests, insufficient data density and distribution of comminution indices commonly exist, making it difficult to model and map deposit scale variability. One method routinely applied to three dimensional domaining is to have an a priori zoning based on geological features (lithology, alteration, mineralogy, textures), and then apply to all material within a given domain the metallurgical values measured on a single sample or average of samples from that domain. The problem with this approach is that commonly the geological domains do not reflect comminution response, therefore compromising the quality of the average domain estimate. To resolve this problem an alternate integrated geometallurgical mapping and modelling method is applied to model and map comminution performance at Cadia East. This paper uses a data set of ~32 000 assay measurements and geological logging information, integrated with ~150 comminution measurements to analyse and develop proxy support models for comminution indices (ie A×b, BMWi, and throughput) based on inherent geological variability. Discrete downhole comminution processing domains are created, mapping orebody response while maintaining inherent variability.

A century ago, new mines were often accompanied by smelters. In Australia, smelters were built at the Daydream mine near Broken Hill, at Kuridala and Mount Elliott near Mount Isa, Broken Hill, Mount Lyell, Mount Morgan, Mount Isa, and more recently at Tennant Creek, Kalgoorlie and Olympic Dam. Now the big miners eschew site-based processing in favour of shipping concentrate to smelters in Europe and Asia. As Chip Goodyear was in the process of vacating his leadership role at BHP Billiton, he was quoted as saying that BHP should concentrate on mining ore and leave æto others the skill set of processing that materialÆ. Yet there are times when on-site processing clearly makes sense. Few companies ship gold ore or concentrate to China for gold extraction. New smelters are being built in Zambia. Solvent-extraction and electrowinning plants frequently produce copper from oxide ores and concentrates while pressure leaching is increasingly being considered for copper sulfide ores. Some argue that on-site processing is best because the waste products can be returned to the ground from whence they came, avoiding potentially large disposal costs in more-populated areas. Copper treatment and refining charges will not remain at $45 per tonne and 4.5 cents per pound forever. This paper examines when it makes sense to use on-site pyro- or hydrometallurgical processes in todayÆs environment and comments on how current trends might alter the balance in future.

Many sample value distributions are highly skewed and present variograms with high relative nugget effects and/or short-range structures. In consequence, significant deskewing of the histogram and variance reduction occurs when transforming between sample and block support, where blocks are of significantly larger volume than samples. When making estimates in the mining industry we usually wish to estimate on the basis of block support rather than sample support. The selective mining unit (SMU) refers to the minimum support upon which ore/waste allocation decisions can realistically and practically be made. The SMU is usually significantly smaller than the sampling grid dimensions, in particular at exploration/feasibility stages. In a non-linear estimate, for each large block (by convention called a æpanelÆ) we estimate the proportion of SMU-sized parcels above a cut-off grade threshold. A series of proportions above cut-off defines the SMU distribution. Use of such non-linear estimates reduces distortion of grade-tonnage curves and provides a better basis for mine planning and economic decision-making. At present, Multiple Indicator Kriging (MIK) is the most widely used technique for performing estimation of recoverable resources. MIK is not the only approach available and it has some potentially serious limitations. The MIK technique is described and a number of theoretical and practical implementation issues are examined. In particular: MIKÆs assumptions about spatial distribution of grade; the behaviour of indicator variograms; application of change of support models; order relationship problems; and modelling the tail of the distribution. Some simple tests are described which allow us to determine the suitability of different estimators for a given deposit and criteria to identify a preferred estimator are also examined. Uniform Conditioning (UC), an alternative estimator which may be used instead of MIK, is described.

A research project incorporating a number of mine site exercises to reduce the effects of fire incidents and possible consequent health and safety hazards has been undertaken focused on the application of mine fire simulation software packages for contaminate tracing and fire modelling in coal and metalliferous mines. This paper examines aspects of introduction of inert gases to underground workings to aid recovery of a mine following a fire. Broad conclusions from work undertaken at individual Australian coal mines are discussed as examples. The effort is built around the introduction of the fire simulation computer program æVentgraphÆ to the Australian mining industry and the consequent modelling of fire scenarios in selected different mine layouts. Case studies have been developed to examine usage of inertisation units and particularly application of the GAG jet engine unit. One example has focused on selection of the best surface portal location for placement of the GAG for most efficient suppression of a fire. A second has examined a situation with significant seam gas being emitted on the face. This has shown that under certain face dip angles stopping the mine surface fan to reduce dilution of GAG exhaust gases will cause reversal of face air and consequent mine explosion as gas laden air is drawn across a fire. A third examines inertisation and dilution issues in mains headings. mains headings present a complex ventilation network with often numerous parallel headings, hundreds of cut-throughs and a variety of ventilation control devices. In such a complex system (with additional interference from a fire), maintaining control of the movement of inert gas is more difficult than elsewhere in the mine. Some illustrations of this issue are given.

"The need for suitable geotechnical characterisation of the rock mass for underground construction is evident. The enlargement project of Railways of the Generalitat of Catalunya (FGC) in Sabadell is a patent example.In general, it is uncommon to encounter problems in the identification and characterisation of certain relevant weak rock formations, which affect project designs. However, all materials should be properly studied, as mischaracterisation can lead to a suboptimal design, resulting in construction problems during the course of the work.Good quality rock is generally not difficult to characterise, but this is not the case for Quaternary or Tertiary cemented soils. Geotechnical investigations based on boreholes do not provide enough information because samples are often badly damaged during the drilling process, if appropriate techniques are not taken. The samples can be altered and may not be representative of the in situ?material.The design and construction of the extension to the FGC line in Sabadell highlighted the importance of the characterisation of Quaternary and Tertiary cemented soils, in particular their rigidity and its underestimation. The twin tunnel project had a total length of 5.1 km, including five stations with 3.5 km excavated by tunnel boring machine (TBM). The remaining 1.6 km was constructed using cut and cover methods. The TBM portion of the tunnel had a bored diameter of 6.83 m with an internal radius of 3 m and 0.25 m thick precast concrete segments. Much of the tunnel alignment passed through and was affected by the presence of certain stiff layers of Quaternary cohesive materials.In this paper the TBM challenges faced will be discussed in detail. In particular:  TBM excavation rate reductions and overheating problems due to the required excessive thrust and torque floating problems in the lining due to nil earth pressure over the rings and the development of an improved, controlled setting time mortar to address this issue block-in and block-out methodology for each station, in some cases with internal blocks to prevent earth pressure drops and soil scouring the relevance of performing simpler solutions, for example, hyperbaric interventions to examine the cutter wheel tools when it has been shown that interventions under atmospheric conditions were equally feasible the implementation of conventional bivalve machines as standard procedure for excavation of diaphragm walls in stations, where in fact, hydrocutter machines or pile boring machines may have been required, given the mechanical characteristics of the materials to be dug out.CITATION:Justa Cámara, R and María Bertrán Llop, J, 2014. This paper looks at the past, present and not too distant future of grinding mill relining.Since the adoption of autogenous grinding (AG) mills and semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills as the primary ore reducing devices in the comminution circuit, plant shutdown frequency and duration has largely been driven by the liner maintenance requirements of these mills.The past 30 years have seen the introduction of many technologies to reduce relining times and frequencies. Advanced relining systems have been developed which include single and twin Mill Relining Machines, capable of placing large (up to 8000 kg) liners, high energy recoilless THUNDERBOLT Hammers, and high capacity Feed Chute Transporters. Despite these advances, today many of the hazards associated with mill relining remain and reline times still vary considerably between mine sites. A sophisticated discrete event simulation program, designed to analyse the mill relining process, has revealed the dominant influences on reline times of crew performance and of the need for safe access to larger segments of the mill.A new generation of advanced and semi-automated technologies is currently being tested that will address these remaining challenges. "In today’s challenging climate of reduced staffing, limited funding and uncertain markets, we are called on to operate more productively and ‘be more innovative’. As an industry, we are quick to identify our practice areas as a mark of our role in the machinery of the mine value chain. We proudly note our profession – ‘geologist’, ‘mining engineer’ or ‘accountant’ – and demarcate our responsibilities and even our physical space. We even subdivide our disciplines into sacred entities such as ‘logging geologist’, ‘resource geologist’ or ‘structural geologist’ to prevent any blurring as though somehow the confusion will cost valuable disciplinary ground. How can we function professionally to heed the call to be more productive and more innovative?The purpose of this paper is to underscore what is expected from project evaluation, examine the ways in which we work as an industry and explore alternatives used in other industries and environments.The paper begins with a summary of project evaluation expectations and the ways in which disciplines typically interconnect when conducting project evaluations. Next, the paper examines alternative work frameworks and making a distinction between multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary frameworks. The lignites of Otago and Southland offer a potentially viable future feedstock for electricity production and possible conversion to petrochemicals or liquid fuels. The deposits, when combined, represent New ZealandÆs largest energy inventory; equivalent to about 74 000 petajoules û or approximately 35 times current natural gas reserves. Too often dismissed as irrelevant to New ZealandÆs energy future because of adverse perceptions of the value of low rank coals, the strategic value of this resource is in fact huge.   Investigations of the lignites extend back over more than 50 years (LFTB various, CRL Energy Ltd). Whilst it is not the intention of this paper to review this work, these investigations have confirmed the suitability of the resource as a feedstock for thermochemical conversion. Current estimates of South Island lignite mining costs are NZ$1.0 - 3.0/GJ (Natusch 2005), making these resources amongst the most competitively-priced energy sources available world-wide.   This value, however, will only be captured if we as a country begin to envisage a world-scale, long-life, integrated and multi-faceted development sized to supply world markets for chemicals or fuels. Recent CAE studies (Hooper and Riddolls, 2005) have emphasised the vital importance of ensuring that any exploitation of this resource maximises their value to New Zealand. The question that thus must be applied is how might large-scale utilisation of the resource fit with New ZealandÆs primary energy supply, and its potential for the export of high-value commodities.   From the broader perspective of New ZealandÆs total energy supply equation we need to examine other supply options beyond just the generation of electricity. We face in this country a situation wherein almost all our liquid fuels feedstock has to be imported with projections for an increasing dependence on imported oil. In addition NZ has a natural gas reserves-to-production ratio of less than ten years, and dwindling supply from local production. Without further natural gas discoveries, New Zealand has only a window of approximately five years before we will need to commit to imported LNG or some other thermal fuels option.   In other words, New Zealand is facing an uncertain future unless we can restore energy inventories to cover an adequate strategic reserve capacity as well as enable long-term investment in alternative sources. Within this context the South Island lignite resources are thus deserving of more attention. The extent of the resource is well known, its suitability for conversion reasonably assessed, and its magnitude such that there is little doubt that lignite conversion could adequately meet NZÆs future energy needs for many years out.   This paper reviews coal gasification technology, its application to lignite and the possibilities for future development of the lignite resources. It is argued that the strategic imperative for this country is to secure the lignite resources as a primary energy source for this country well into the latter half of this century.

Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) has recently undertaken an exercise to improve orebody basal definition. Older mineralisation bases (pre-2005) were highly erratic using old protocol reverse circulation (RC) (also known as Air Core) drilling and interpretation. The erratic nature of this estimation tool, resulted in impractical modelling towards the end of mineralisation (EOM), difficult mine design and unrealistic reconciliation. New protocol drilling, which includes high definition SONIC drilling data, has provided more data to be available for more accurate interpretation. Recent advances in drilling methodology has allowed for better penetration depths for SONIC drilling, which was previously restricted to approximately 80 m (pre-2005). This improved data set allows more emphasis on geological interpretation with factors such as lithology, slime content, and mineral species distribution. These factors when in unique combination enable more accurate and realistic EOM data points. These points are modelled into surfaces using conditional simulation techniques and result in a vastly smoother surface and consequently, a more representative resource.

Coal mine pillar design formulae available to mine planners are typically based on relationships determined for specific site conditions. Application of these methods is difficult when other factors, relating to mining or geological conditions, not specifically addressed in these relationships are encountered. A review of pillar design methods, coal strength properties and relevant field monitoring of pillar behaviour has shown pillar strength and deformational characteristics are extremely sensitive to in situ behaviour of the rock and other material components that make up the coal pillar system. A method has been developed that has been found to provide excellent correlation between existing field data using the strength and deformational characteristics of materials determined in selected laboratory tests. This method is based on definition of the loading conditions, accurate modelling of the strength, confining conditions and deformation occuring in the roof, floor and coal seam and definition of the in situ strength of coal based on underground monitoring of appropriately sized coal pillar. The design method is considered to provide an accurate and rigorous pillar design method that will give mine planners a more rational mine design capability which is based on the mine geometry and geological setting of the operation. It is envisaged that availability of such a method will allow significant optimisation of pillar layouts and more closely define the geological and mining issues that relate to pillar design optimisation.

Chemical admixtures are not commonly included in the variety of backfill mixes used in the mining industry. This may be attributed to several reasons including, but not limited to: the perceived high added cost, 2. the lack of awareness about their proper use, and 3. the lack of knowledge about their features and benefits. In the construction industry today, however, chemical admixtures are used in the majority of the concrete produced, enabling concrete to become a more cost-effective building material. They also enable construction crews to meet demands for year-round construction, quicker completion of construction projects, and improved concrete properties. The high demand for chemical admixtures in the construction industry has led to numerous innovations in admixture technology in recent years. Some of these chemical admixtures have been found to enhance the production, transport, placement, and in situ properties of backfill mixes. Others have been found to reduce the cost of such mixes while maintaining, and in some cases improving, their physical properties. In this paper, a few of such innovative admixture technologies are discussed. The benefits, imparted by these technologies to backfill mixes as well as performance data on their use in several backfill applications at various mines, are presented.

When times are tough in the mineral industry û as they have been for some time û typical responses by mining companies are to cut costs and/ or increase production. The latter is seen to spread fixed costs, thereby also reducing unit costs per tonne mined. However, most mineral deposits respond to increased production rates by lowering ore grades, so the reduction in cost per tonne of ore does not necessarily result in a reduced cost per unit of metal produced. The authorsÆ experience is that this process often leads to a mine plan that is a long way from optimal. Producing to the point where marginal cost equals marginal revenue may work well in a manufacturing operation, but it is not necessarily the best strategy for a mining company with a depleting resource. Variations in tonnage and grade with depth, ore reserve optimism and a variety of other factors conspire to produce variations in production rates and grade that often result in suboptimal outcomes and potential mine failure. Added to this is the focus of industry analysts and senior corporate management on such measures as unit costs and ounces in reserves. This is perceived to have the perverse effect of driving the share price down when strategies are adopted that actually improve the value of the mining operation, and vice versa! Many mine failures can be prevented by a close examination of the tonnage grade curve and an understanding of how margins, net cash flows and resulting business risk change with cut-off grades and rates of production. A few relatively simple analyses early in the evaluation of a project can demonstrate the tradeoffs between the main decision parameters, leading to right-sizing of the operation. Once major commitments to major capital items have been made, and reserves have been publicly reported, optimisation of the operation becomes much more difficult than if it had been done earlier. Such investigations can also identify the upside potential and downside risks associated with factors outside the companyÆs control. Many strategies that may enhance value in the good times significantly increase the downside risk in the bad times. What is often called risk analysis typically looks at superficial issues, and does not evaluate the major factors leading to the potential for financial disaster. This paper illustrates some of these major risks, and demonstrates how they may be fully evaluated so that corporate decision makers can make fully informed decisions that take account of the real risks.

This paper examines the importance of examining the relationship between biology and geochemistry when designing a biopile to treat alkaline soils impacted by petroleum hydrocarbons. At a site in Nevada a large, unlined pit was constructed in a loamy sand soil and filled at regular intervals with a mixture of jet fuel, lubricating oils and waste solvents which were set on fire by the local fire department for training purposes. During its period of operation numerous chemicals were also dumped into the pit for disposal purposes, including dichlorobenzene and various chloroethylenes. As a result of these activities a large groundwater contaminant plume was formed. As a part of the site remediation process a decision was made to perform a limited source removal and excavate the top three to four metres of contaminated soil from the burn pit and place it in an engineered biopile. The location of the training pit is in a heavily mineralised basin where the background sulphate level in groundwater exceeds 5000 ppm. Due to naturally occurring biodegradation of the petroleum hydrocarbons a large portion of the sulphate was converted to sulphide which deposited in the soils as marcasite in the anaerobic soils. The initial attempt at soil remediation was to use a forced air treatment scheme that had worked well in small scale laboratory testing. Unfortunately, when attempted in the field on a large scale, marcasite reacted with atmospheric oxygen resulting in internal biopile temperatures exceeding 90¦C resulting in the virtual sterilisation of the soils without remediation occurring. In order to solve this vexing problem Pintail Systems, Inc developed an anaerobic culture that allowed the pile to be operated under anaerobic conditions. Within three months the biopile successfully demonstrated on a large scale significant biodegradation of the refractory petroleum hydrocarbons.

Environmental leaching methods such as the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) test or the ASLP test are used to assess wastes including mining and mineral processing by-products. These tests were initially designed as regulatory tests simulating conditions in a co-disposal municipal landfill waste facility and do not allow leaching performance to be predicted in site specific scenarios. Further, the assumptions underlying these tests tend to define worst-case scenario leaching conditions for by-products from the mineral industry disposed of outside a co-disposal scenario.   Recently some characterisation leaching test methods have been issued as ISO/TS standards (ISO/TS 21268-3:2007 and ISO/TS 21268-4:2007) that aim to define the leaching performance of soil type wastes and to predict the leaching performance of these wastes over long time frames. In this preliminary work these standards are trialled for by-products from the mineral industry and the quality of information that can be obtained from them compared to TCLP/ASLP tests.   Where clear comparisons were possible, the TCLP/ASLP tests were typically found to extract a similar, or often greater, amount of component than (i) tests conducted at the same pH but without the acetate buffer or (ii) for test conditions aimed at simulating long-term leaching in an eluate defined by the waste type. While further work is required, the preliminary results indicated that the tests may provide reliable long-term estimates of leaching performance of wastes in soil types of variable pH and provide a suitable basis for long-term planning for optimal waste handling, treatment or even re-use.

Ballarat Goldfields NL is developing an exploration decline at Ballarat East using a Mitsui Miike S-125 roadheader. To-date, 530 in of advance has been achieved at an average rate of 16.1 m/week. Roadheader availability has averaged 94.3 per cent, and pick consumption has averaged 0.016 per m. Ground support has involved pattern rockbolting with split sets, 100 mm thick fibre reinforced shotcrete, and steel sets as required. The slower than expected advance rate has mainly been due to difficult ground conditions. It is expected that a further 970 in of decline will be mechanically excavated before a drill and blast system becomes more economical.

It is expected that the future of mines will heavily adopt autonomy. However, problems with leveraging workforce transition, meeting Sustainable Development Goals, SDG’s (poverty, reduced inequalities), managing uncertainties (geologic, operational, economic), cybersecurity (connectivity, cyber-physical infrastructure) and innovation (transformative processes, real-time decision-making etc) are required to be solved for the intended autonomy. These problems also impact the safety of the future mine environment. The AI technologies provide a broad range of opportunities for enhancing mine safety. However, development of an accurate AI model for mine safety requires a large number of data, which may not be readily available to overcome the associated uncertainties in the mine environment.

Alcoa of Australia's Western Australian bauxite mining operations in the Darling Ranges, southeast of Perth, present major challenges in the control of air blast. The close proximity of rural communities and the face profile make the traditional methods of air blast control difficult.An extensive blast noise monitoring programme has been established. The development of a computerised blast noise prediction model and the establishment of a radiosonde weather balloon facility have reduced blast induced complaints by a factor of ten.The meteorological factors affecting blast noise transmission are discussed and examples are given of adverse weather conditions for the southwest region of Western Australia.

My topic for today is the Crown Minerals of the future. New work initiatives are underway and the organisational structure is being overhauled. These are not insignificant changes and in this paper briefly summarises these proposals. These new work initiatives and changes to the organisational structure will have implications for the industry as a whole and also for the way individual clients interact with Crown Minerals.
