In one of North AmericaÆs largest mines, which contains more than six active coal-producing faces, mine controllers must meet the complex challenge of adhering to the mine plan while also ensuring customer quality. Fleet management systems (FMS) provide many different avenues to control production flows, from the faces to the various pit crushers. Nonetheless, mine controllers must balance a variety of factors such as unplanned downs, differing customer demands, their own daily key performance indicators (KPIs) related to equipment utilisation, among others. Deviating from the short-term mine plan is the most common means of balancing the other factors, since adherence to the plan is traditionally only measured during the weekly variance meeting with engineering staff. However, such deviation may be one of the most costly responses, as long-term scheduling issues may arise such as multi-face dead-heading or insufficient stripping. This paper focuses on the development of a system for real-time adherence to mine plan within a control room environment. This system is part of a larger blending-focused, multi-million dollar project with elements of a centralised remote control room, developed at the University of ArizonaÆs Mining Information Systems and Operations Management (MISOM) Mine Control Center (MC2). The mine plan (MPL) component of the overall blending system integrates both historical and real-time FMS data with mine plan requirements directly sourced from original systems (no additional input required). The measures, displayed largely as graphs, have tools to help controllers manage the production to facilitate adherence to the plan. Some measures are designed to motivate crews to perform by inciting competition between crews, softened through a study of the controller culture. The MPL component was deployed at the mine, and the before and after deployment adherence was measured. This paper discusses the technical development of the new tool, its deployment, and an ethnography (study of culture) to understand controller motivation.

The Golden Pig mine has embarked on a diamond drill program design philosophy that increases flexibility of the program by greatly increased drill pattern densities. The use of standard broad pattern diamond drilling at the Golden Pig mine has previously lead to operational inefficiencies and impacted significantly on the costs of the mine. The diamond drill program philosophy and its interaction with mine planning is explained. The case study of the E lode mining as used to internally justify the increased drill densities is detailed.

Optimisation of a real-time at-line monitoring system for control of industrial granule coating quality is presented. The system is based on a fluorescence imaging system, because fluorescence originates in the interiors of enzyme granules but is significantly quenched by a polymer coating (which is needed due to environmental precautions). We have developed an image analytical system for direct prediction of coating quality, which is based on application of the Angle Measure Technique (AMT) for image complexity characterisation; AMT is briefly described. The first part of the presentation addresses pixel sampling strategies within a digital industrial image, inherent in application of AMT, in which the unfolded image is regarded as a one-dimensional object in analogy with 1D process sampling in Theory of Sampling (TOS). The effects of random, stratified and systematic pixel selections in the unfolded image are evaluated. Also factors such as the fraction of image pixels and the effects of specific unfolding strategies (there are three principal strategies, termed æchopÆ, æsnakeÆ and æspiralÆ respectively) are investigated. It turns out that unsuspected artifacts are sometimes produced, related to the specifics of the unfolding procedure, which interferes with a straightforward 1D TOS process sampling analogy. These artifacts have a wider interest û among others, for 2D sampling û and therefore receive special attention in this presentation. The optimal pixel selection strategy for the AMT algorithm is found to be systematic or stratified sampling (not surprising according to TOS) of 500+ initiating points, but need to be unfolded in the novel spiral- or snake-wise fashions in order to effectively counteract these artifacts. This also has a general impact on various suggested standard schemes for 2D grid-sampling, among others, from the geoscience realms. The second part of the presentation is directed towards optimal image analytical sampling of a continuous series of fluorescent images (imaging of conveyor belts of æinfinite lengthÆ), ie optimisation of process image sampling. The minimum number of images needed to uphold a sufficiently good on-line estimate of the quality control (QC) parameter in question is found to correspond to the relatively high sampling rate of 15 - 20 per cent, which can be shown to be related to an intrinsic very high measurement error level (25 per cent) of a mandated analytical reference method.

The Kiirunavaara apatite-magnetite orebody is about 4 km long and approximately 100 m thick sheet-like body, which lies roughly in a north-south direction and dips from the horizontal plane along its entire length, in towards the town of Kiruna. The origin of this orebody has been a matter of controversy, with both magmatic and hydrothermal origins proposed. Traditionally and for practical purposes this rich apatite-magnetite ore has been divided into two main types: low phosphorous ore (B-ore) and high phosphorous ore (D-ore). Further the low phosphorous ore is divided into the low alkali (B1) and the high alkali (B2) ore.

Longwall mining is a form of underground mining and the principal extraction method for underground coal mining in Australia. The method is used in the mining of both thermal and metallurgical coal. The primary market for thermal longwall mines is that of the export market where price is governed against the Newcastle Thermal Benchmark index (globalCOAL, 2016).Australia’s thermal coal export outlook is considered moderate due to slower demand from major importing countries, as well as slowing domestic production. However, ‘Australia is projected to increase its share of world thermal coal exports and become the world’s largest exporter over the medium term as lower prices, increased domestic use and infrastructure constraints limit growth from other key suppliers’ (Office of the Chief Economist (OCE), 2016, pp 25, 58). On the contrary, and as a result of current global coal price trends, the basic economic principles of underground longwall coal mining are heavily stressed. From a life-of-mine perspective, influencing return on investment is at its greatest during project evaluation and execution. "Quebrada Blanca is a porphyry copper deposit located in the Eocene-Oligocene belt of Chilean Andes. Operation started in 1994 and original reserves for supergene mineralisation gave a life-of-mine (LOM) of 20 years; however, further exploration extended the LOM until 2020.In order to optimise the remaining five years of supergene resource, geometallurgical variables were added to the geological model including copper recovery and acid consumption. LOM plan encompasses finishing the phase number eight and the future development of phases 11 and 13.LOM lithologies include diorites, quartz monzonites, porphyries, igneous and tourmaline breccias. Main alterations are: potassic, phyllic and argillic. Litho-alterations or geometallurgical units were formed by combining five types of rocks with three types of alteration. According to statistical information, the deposit can be represented with 12 litho-alteration units, which cover 98 per cent of the LOM volume.For copper recovery information, there were 40 mini-columns tests made in order to obtain kinetics curves and copper recovery values after comparing the difference between head and tails grades. Acid consumption was obtained using an automatic neutraliser device-based test.Historical data said that copper recovery in pads after 450 days of irrigation is around 75 per cent of recoverable copper while acid consumption is around 5.5 kg/t.According to this study, lower recoveries are related with potassic-altered diorites and argillic-altered quartz monzonites with values around 60 per cent. On the other hand, best recoveries could be found in potassic-altered quartz monzonites and argillic-altered diorites with values closer to 80 per cent.It was also revealed that the most reactive rock is the potassic-altered diorite with 12 kg/t of acid consumption. This rock covers approximately 40 per cent from phases 11 and 13.The final geomet model was calculated using a program that relates each geometallurgical unit with a specific copper recovery and acid consumption value. Two key elements in the design of a pastefill or high density backfill system are the preparation of the backfill material and its distribution underground. This paper examines these two areas. Owing to the essentially impervious nature of total mill tailings, preparation of pastefill and high density fill from current tailings involves a physical dewatering process. There are currently three methods available for this process: Vacuum or pressure filters. These represent the ætraditionalÆ approach to the preparation of pastefill. Paste production storage mechanism. This is a thickening/storage mechanism developed with the specific objective of producingpaste/high density backfills. Fluidization. This system utilises silos fitted with simple dewatering devices and nozzles. Recently developed by CANMET, it provides the simplest and most economical approach.This paper describes and compares the three preparation methods, from a practical and an economic point of view. Once the pastefill/high density fill has been prepared and binder added, the backfill must be distributed underground into the stopes. A fundamental factor in the design of a distribution system is the rheology of the material. No two materials will exhibit the same properties, and a sequence of rheological and related testing is required prior to the completion of the design of the underground distribution system. This paper covers the testwork normally required and discusses the fundamental design parameters of pastefill distribution systems. The final section of this paper summarises the use of pastefill at three mines in Canada.

For an optimal design and control of metallurgical processes, a deep understanding of the thermodynamics of the governing reactions is required. Modelling the thermochemical behaviour of those reactions is complex, as it involves multi-component and multi-phase systems. For this purpose, thermodynamic computing systems such as FactSage™ (Bale et al, 2016), which combine Gibbs energy minimisation routines with large databases of optimised thermodynamic data of solutions and compounds, have been used within the SMS group GmbH. Recently, the successful integration of those thermodynamic computing systems into the digital platforms of SMS has been achieved through ChemApp, which made running complex thermochemical calculations in Python-integrated development environments possible. ChemApp is a programmer’s package for thermochemistry and incorporates the Gibbs energy minimiser of FactSage™ as reported by Petersen and Hack (2007) as well as by Zietsman and Petersen (2018). The digital platforms link the fundamental and the industrial aspects together and can be applied as a process advisor, or for the evaluation of the environmental footprint and the economic implications of different process routes, as discussed by Reuter (2023). Two examples illustrating the progress of the developments in this regard will be introduced: 1. The Tilting Refining Furnace (TRF) for copper scrap recycling and refining to anode copper (the BlueControlApp). 2. Dephosphorisation control for the oxygen steelmaking process (Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF)).

This paper examines the interrelationship of conducting full risk assessments in the context of the coal mining industry and under the framework of the Health's Safety in Employment Act 1992. In the context of Occupational Health's Safety, Risk Management is a holistic management process that can be used by individuals working in all organisations and from all industries. The Australian New Zealand Standard 4360: 2004 defines a Risk as being; The chance of something happening that will have an impact on objectives. This definition is followed by several notes that include: a risk is often specified in terms of an event or circumstance and the consequences that may flow from it, risk is measured in terms of a combination of the consequences of an event and their likelihood, and risk may have a positive or negative impact. For the purposes of this paper, the above definition will be adopted. This paper examines the newly expanded approach of the fully documented risk management process in the New Zealand coal mining industry. This is done in the context of the coal mining regulations but more importantly by using the framework of the Health & Safety in Employment Act 1992. This legislation under Section 6 requires all employers to, Take all Practicable Steps to prevent harm coming to employees while at work and to others who might be at or in the vicinity of a workplace. When the term 'all practicable steps' is studied, one can clearly see that such steps should be the same steps taken that a prudent and reasonable person would have taken given the same type of circumstance. Due to the fact that in New Zealand parliament made statutes is administered by a Government Department, means that their breaches will be heard before a judge in the District Court. Under the Westminster System of Justice, a basic dictum of that court in matters relating the occupational health and safety is that a breach needs to be satisfied to a specific standard. That standard is, 'Beyond a reasonable Doubt'. One of the primary benefits of adopting a proactive approach to risk management is that if the industry were to adopt similar approaches, then this mythology could be seen as an industry standard. As such, the approach carries the same status in a court of law, as that of an Approved Code of Practice.

The character of alluvial gold deposits presents severe difficulties, and sometimes limitations, on the extent to which metallurgical efficiency can be measured. Very little monitoring of metallurgical performance is practised. An indication of performance is often extracted from the comparison of production to the estimate. This is a dubious practice. The recovery efficiency of conventional practices, viz sluices, tables and jigs, falls off sharply below 0.2 mm. Field evaluation procedures tend to simulate these conventional practices. Thus the presence of fine gold may not be detected, particularly if obscured by clay. There is increasing evidence that fine gold could, in places, be present in sufficient concentrations to be economic. Most gold in paleoplacers is finer than 0.1 mm. There are established practices elsewhere in the mineral industry that may physically recover gold down to 5 microns in size and which could find application for fine alluvial gold.

The aim of the paper was to model numerically some aspects of the extraction of coal pillars by split and fendering. A two-dimensional elasto-plastic plane strain model with strain softening and interface mod- elling was used. The model was able to simulate the improvement of conditions experienced in lifting from the fender, when the roof adjacent to the fender has caved. In contrast, when a stook was left, providing support to a span of uncaved roof, the model pre- dicted the fender would suffer considerably more de- formation and strain.

Water is required as a key strategic resource in most mining and metallurgical processes and, in some countries, it has become a limiting supply for the development of mining activity. During the last years, mining industry efforts have been successfully focused on water use efficiency in the different processes. However, these efforts will not be sufficient to compensate for the growing demand of mining products and the decrease of ore grades. New efforts should be oriented to the search for alternative water supplies such as sea water, with or without desalinisation, or water harvesting. But to survive this growing pressure and to get a social licence to operate, the mining industry can also assume a proactive attitude and pursue a prominent role in water management at regional and local scale. This paper reviews some of these emerging issues, particularly in the context of the Chilean copper industry.

Modem open cut and underground mining in the tropics inevitably expose partially weathered and unweathered rocks to oxygen and water, leading to weathering and the release of solutes and often acidity as well. Historical monitoring data can demonstrate these phenomena. Three case studies from open cut mines in the north of the Northern Territory illustrate the deterioration in quality of pond water receiving drainage from waste rock dumps. The potential for deterioration of water quality was not recognised in many mine Environmental Impact Statements prepared and accepted in the 1980s. The examples documented indicate the importance of adequately planning for this near inevitable process. Retrofitting a mine water management system to 'no' or minimal release can be very difficult and expensive, and may not be feasible, leading to downstream pollution. The characterisation of acid and solute production potential of ore and waste rock, and improved dumping strategies and water management are very important to minimise the environmental impact of mining in the tropics.

This paper presents the results and findings of geochemical and mineralogical testwork conducted on samples collected from waste rock dumps at two mine sites, located in South Carolina, USA (Site 1) and Sudbury Ontario, Canada (Site 2). Important aspects of the relationship between the physical and geochemical aspects of the dumps are also presented. The overall aims of the project were to 1. determine if the physical and hydrological nature of the waste-rock dumps had any impact on the geochemical and mineralogical characteristics of the dump materials; and 2. to identify key implications for dump construction for ARD control. The results of geochemical and mineralogical tests indicate that the waste rock at Site 1 had undergone significant in-dump weathering and was relatively advanced with respect to ARD evolution. In contrast, the waste rock at Site 2 had undergone some weathering, however still contained a considerable amount of sulfide minerals. Testing also suggested that flushing of oxidation products at Site 2 had been limited, which therefore promoted the storage of oxidation products at the site. In addition, materials that had a D50 particle size in the range of 5 mm to 30 mm appeared to be more readily flushed than samples that had a D50 particle size of 30 mm. This suggested that preferential water pathways may have developed within the dumps at both sites.

The transition to more sustainable metal production is receiving much attention at present, and the iron and steel industry is at the centre of the conversation. New, more environmentally friendly production technologies, such as direct reduced iron (DRI) smelting furnaces, need to be developed in a short period of time. This necessitates increased use of computational modelling that incorporates more accurate material descriptions. The combination of large-scale multiphysics models of high-temperature processes with CALPHAD material descriptions leads to infeasible computation times. This can be resolved with the previously reported RapidThermo framework, which has been demonstrated to make equilibrium calculations orders of magnitude faster, within controllable limits of accuracy. In this paper, we explain how further material properties, which are important to modelling hightemperature reactors, can be added to the RapidThermo framework. This can improve the accuracy and usefulness of process and multiphysics models in the development of new technologies, which can significantly accelerate development cycles.

For many years Isa Mine has seen the need for a continuous mining machine which will economically cut hard rock. Tunnel borers are unsuitable due to the size and inflexibility of the machine and the shape of excavation mined. The design of roadheader type machines will not permit the use of the necessary cutting technology. in 1983 a joint project was undertaken by The Robbins Company and Mount Isa Mines Limited to develop and to trial a machine suitable for cutting hard rock in an operating mine. The project was based on the proven technology of raiseboring applied to horizontal development. The Mobile Miner was fabricated and trialled in a disused quarry in the U.S.A. during early 1984. Following these trials, the machine was transported to Mount Isa and commenced mining in September that year. The initial duty was to continue the development of a decline commenced by conventional mining for a conveyor system to serve the deeper southern areas of the 1100 copper orebody. This system will permit direct tipping of copper ore to a new crusher complex and conveying of the - crushed ore approximately 2 kilometres to the central hoisting shaft facilities. The Robbins Mobile Miner MM120-3001 uses a vertical rotating cutting wheel mounted on a horizontal swinging boom to excavate a nominally rectangular shaped heading. The cuttings are collected on an apron and conveyed back through the machine. The resulting excavation is smooth-walled with no blasting damage to the surrounding rock. This provides a safer working environment than does conventional drill and blast development mining. Ground support requirements are considerably reduced.

The Croydon Gold Mine is located in northwest Queensland and is a joint venture between Central Coast Exploration N.L. and Pancontinental Mining Ltd. The mining operation commenced in 1987 and consists of satellite open pit mines feeding a central Carbon-In-Pulp gold Treatment Plant. The gold mineralisation is hosted by quartz veins within the Croydon Volcanic Group and the Esmeralda Granite, a cogenetic igneous suite of Middle Proterozoic age. The mineralisation comprises gold and silver with associated basemetals. The gold and silver electrum occurs as extremely fine free grains. The gold distribution is heterogenous occuring across the full vein width, or restricted to the footwall or hangingwall. The average mineral resource grade is 3.5 g/t. The deposits are all hard rock and mining is carried out by drill and blast technique. All mining activity is carried out by a mining contractor. Mining is by a selective mining method which entails the drilling, blasting and extraction of the hangingwall waste prior to orebody extraction.
