The Jundee gold mining operation is located in the Western Australian Yandal Greenstone belt. Jundee is a mature operation encompassing multiple and complex underground ore resources, dwindling open pit reserves, large surface stockpiles, small satellite resources and two near-mine but stand alone process plants. The imminent completion of continuous open pit mining and the associated drop-off in total mill feed precipitated a review of the strategic mine plan and development of options that would optimise the exploitation of the remaining mineral resources and the utilisation of the existing plant and infrastructure.An initial review of the strategic decisions to be made, available options as well as the quantity, complexity and co-dependency of the strategic variables quickly led to the conclusion that an Operations Research style modelling approach would be appropriate. An 'off-the-shelf' program engine by the name of WHATSBEST! (LINDO Systems Inc.) was chosen on the basis of price, reputation and ease of use. The model was formulated with the unknown variables (being the ore mining rates) expressed as a proportion of the maximum achievable ore mining rate from each source. Costs were defined as variable or fixed, with this definition being a key aspect of the modelling process. The critical application of the model was in determining the optimal extraction rate of ore, the destination (ie Jundee or Nimary mill) and the sequence of extraction of each ore source that maximized the cash flow of the operation. The program was designed to be able to quickly derive an optimal result from the many variables, replacing the previous laborious iterative process of arriving at an acceptable answer by means of several large and static spreadsheet models. This paper presents the process of selection, formulation, application and scope of operation of the turn-key linear and non-linear program strategic model now used as part of the Jundee Operation strategic decision making process.

Pumps play a critical role in mining operations, and their energy consumption and environmental impact are significant. This paper addresses the need for a holistic approach to sustainable pump deployment by expanding on previous work presented at IMPC Asia Pacific 2022 and World Mining Congress 2023. The research takes a significant step forward by outlining a structured approach to estimate and demonstrate sustainability tailored for operational slurry pumps. It details the calculation methodologies used to quantify the carbon dioxide emissions from electricity, wear materials and transport, as well as sealing water usage. To enhance practicality and usability, a simplified visual representation—called sustainability metrics—has been developed to monitor overall efficiency. The sustainability metrics consist of the availability, pump efficiency, and water utilisation efficiency. The proposed methodology is integrated with Pumps Condition Monitoring Service to maximise benefits. Three case studies, from iron ore, copper, and nickel operations globally, were employed to evaluate the proposed methodology. The findings demonstrate the critical role of sustainability calculations in understanding pumps operation. These calculations improve awareness of the pump’s role in the sustainability journey and enable effective monitoring. The studies highlight that continuous monitoring paired with effective prescriptive maintenance strategy can significantly reduce power and water consumption while maximising pump availability. The case studies also reveal significant shortcomings in current operational practices and non-optimal maintenance regimes, emphasising the need for practical recommendations to maximise savings and optimise pump performance. In the context of increasing climate change awareness and the imperative for global decarbonisation, this research highlights the necessity of critically assessing methods and operations to drive sustainability in the mining industry. By adopting a holistic approach to sustainable pump deployment, mining operations can effectively reduce their environmental impact while enhancing operational efficiency and economic viability. The proposed methodology and case studies provide valuable insights and practical recommendations for mining companies seeking to achieve sustainable practices and contribute to a decarbonised future.

Photogrammetry-based techniques supported by traditional mapping tools are more frequently used for open pit geotechnical mapping. It fundamentally involves the collection of geological, structural and rock mass data from pit batters when safe to do so. These are essential components for refining and implementing continuous improvements to geotechnical models. The geotechnical model is used to review bench performance, optimise geotechnical design parameters, interpretation and analysis of pit slope stability. This paper is a case study of implementing different pit mapping methods at Mount Carlton gold mine, North Queensland. It critically reviews the tools required, including the Brunton compass, mobile application Clino, geotechnical data mapping software CloudCompare (2015) and Sirovision software. The review compares the image precision, structural measurements and data analysis. The review also underlines mine site management philosophy for safe geotechnical data collection to identify in-pit geotechnical hazards and the mitigation of potential slope instability. Sirovision is a remote sensing system for site geology mapping and interpreting geotechnical characteristics of exposed mining faces. The system utilises off-the-shelf digital SLR cameras to capture stereo photographs of the rock face and uses the latest image processing technology to generate accurate 3D models. These 3D models are digitally analysed using computational geometry to extract unbiased and accurate geological and geotechnical data. CloudCompare processes high accuracy 3D dense cloud rock surfaces reconstructed with photogrammetry software to extract the geological planes using the FACET or Compass plugins. The major discontinuity sets can be observed and the orientation (dip/dip direction) obtained from the algorithm is accurate and reliable for geotechnical assessment, including kinematic and rock slope stability analysis.

The experimental design and sampling procedures for underground data collection are outlined. After multiple tailings dam failures in recent times, the owner organisations have made increased efforts to step up the governance systems to industry best practise in the design, construction and operational management areas. The measures include but are not limited to, site investigation, rigorous peer review (both internal and external), certification through appropriately qualified personnel and improvement in operational management practises. While a lot of focus is on design and operational practices, the construction stage requires adaptation (both in terms of materials and approved design) and immediate decision making on site. Work undertaken in these areas is mostly irreversible and sometimes poses serious threat to the future TSF raise/ expansion planning and may lead to reduced life of the TSF and additional risk to the Owner.This technical paper will discuss some challenges and highlight the importance of appropriate processes to achieve a successful construction regime. The mining industry continues to have major disasters (Bingham Canyon, Pike River, Upper Big Branch, Mount Polley and Samarco), which often have a devastating effect on the enterprise, in terms of personnel deaths and injuries, environmental destruction, and financial and reputational loss. These disasters are not imposed from outside the business or organisation, they are almost always a function of loss of control of the management of the organisation’s critical assets and processes that they contain or to which they are exposed.Asset integrity is discussed as an effective response to business risks in order to mitigate, control and recover from loss scenarios that could expose a mining operation to significant property damage and business interruption, or even total loss. Vital to this process is the identification and control of risks to critical assets. Components of a critical asset assurance program are presented for discussion.Formal risk assessment has a longer history in industries other than mining, eg petrochemical, nuclear, military, aviation and space industries. Risk assessment is a structured, proactive approach to understanding and improving risks, as opposed to a reactive ‘fix-it-when-it-breaks’ mentality. Risk assessment techniques were triggered by major public disasters, such as the Flixborough chemical plant disaster (1973), Three Mile Island nuclear plant event (1979) and others.Today, most industries see risk assessment as an inherent part of their business, but do mining sites capture business risks that are related to major loss scenarios, which could have a significant impact on the operation?Does your risk assessment process:- involve a team having the right skill set so that the discussion is both stimulated and technically sound?- use generic assessment when a site-specific assessment is needed?- fail to consider all possible outcomes, including maximum foreseeable loss (MFL)?- fail to identify all hazards and controls associated with a particular activity?- fail to monitor controls effectively?This paper addresses the issues identified by these questions and provides some direction for developing a risk management process where business risk associated with critical asset integrity is integrated with other business and safety and health risk processes to provide a robust method for managing your business. "In today’s mining industry, the pressure of reducing costs and increasing production while maintaining high safety standards is at the forefront of operational endeavours. A combination of specific mining knowledge and technological advances has helped enable this notion. Fleet management systems have been developed to enable sites to better measure and manage production to improve operational efficiency.The integral part to managing production is having accurate, readily accessible data. This empowers key stakeholders in the management team to drive production reporting, materials tracking and budget forecasting.If a site does not run a fleet management system, manual input is heavily relied upon for production data, which introduces increased risk of human input error. Errors can drive outcomes that don’t achieve increased production at a reduced cost. Alternatively, a fleet management system can have improved accuracy but involves a high monetary investment. Rail, port and shipping charges represent 30 to 50 per cent of landed costs for Australian coal mines selling to Asia. This proportion is higher for sales to Europe, yet it is in Europe where Australian producers are aiming for increased market share. The landed cost of coal to the international customer is the key parameter which determines market competitiveness. The objective of this study is to examine Australian export coal competitiveness in terms of transport distance. The approach used examines world coking coal and steaming coal production and the transport distances between major exporting regions and importing countries. Reference is made to the importance of land transport costs and a comparative approach for emphasising the relative magnitude of this factor is developed. Models developed are examined in terms of Australia's exports and a conclusion is reached that a reduction in rail freight costs would be an effective measure for improving the competitiveness of Australia's coal industry.

Examples are provided of discontinuity analysis at selected sites in central Victoria. Discontinuities are rock fractures of low tensile strength, including bedding, foliations and joints, which are analysed during rock excavation design, to quantitatively determine the defect orientations, spacing and lengths. Their analysis can reduce the cost of mining operation and improve safety. Extrapolation beyond the exposed face is required, although difficult without an understanding of the regional geology. For rock engineering purposes assumptions are commonly made that discontinuity characteristics are uniform throughout the rock mass, however this is often invalid, as rock masses have usually undergone large-scale deformation, exhibit anisotropy and inhomogeneity. Structural geologists are able to interpret large-scale deformation responses for the purposes of structural correlation and extrapolation. Examples of discontinuity analysis linked to regional geological assesment from sites in central Victoria, reveal that discontinuities exhibit similar characteristics in a range of rock types of different ages and composition. Spacing variations between individual sites are believed to be a result of local rock type differences.

The technology of flotation recovery of silver from the residue of a zinc plant is described. The peculiarity of this technology is a preliminary pulp conditioning in sodium chloride solution in the presence of aluminum metal under high temperature. In this process the silver is converted to the metallic phase and then floated with the usual sulphydryl collectors. A variant using a combined technology is also described, in which before flotation is performed about 50 per cent of silver is leached. The total silver recovery with the combined technology comes up to 90 - 94 per cent.

Mining has been typified of late as a boom and bust, cyclical industry operating against a steady decline in the size and quality of mineral deposits. Decreasing deposit grades and increasing costs of traditional mining techniques, all in the face of another commodity downturn, are forcing mining companies more than ever before to seek out new and innovative ways to operate. New technologies are emerging to model, control and track resources through the mining value chain, to move material about mines more efficiently, and to identify and separate ore from gangue early in the extraction process.Discovering such technologies however is only the first challenge for mining companies. Actually implementing technological change successfully has proved to be an even bigger challenge. Like for many industries, fulfilling the promised benefits for the expense and timing envisioned, has not been easy when innovative technologies are introduced.Citing the author’s insights and experiences in a number of emerging technologies, this paper explores barriers to implementing technological change in the mining context. Preconcentration, through gravity separation (Wallace et al, 2015), magnetic separation and particle size (Clout, 2013), has been used in many historical projects to convert low grade material into ore. More recently, pre-concentration technologies such as bulk sorting (Kurth, 2017), screening (Bearman, 2014) and coarse particle flotation (Vollert et al, 2019) have also demonstrated their ability to progressively reject waste through the value chain. These technologies can not only deliver stepchange improvements to the economics of mining operations, but can transform the environmental and social aspects by minimising water and energy consumption and significantly reduce the quantity of fine tailings produced. However, implementing progressive waste rejection requires technologies and approaches to be combined and applied in the right way to capture the value. From a technical perspective, progressive waste rejection introduces challenges related to the orebody, equipment performance, engineering and understanding the value chain from the resource through to final product. From a management perspective, the key issues are related to people and processes, in particular; motivating the business, challenging the paradigms, and introducing new ways of operating within the constraint of existing management structures to manage risks and minimise lost opportunity costs. This combination of technical and management issues means that progressive waste rejection is a complex undertaking for mining companies, yet the reward for the business and other stakeholders is potentially high and should not be ignored. This paper presents how progressive waste rejection can offer step-change improvements to the business case for high and low grade greenfield and brownfield projects based on case studies completed by Ausenco. The paper then outlines different implementation approaches from concept studies to execution to address the various technical and management challenges outlined above.

First Quantum Minerals (FQM) operates the Cayeli underground copper mine in Turkey. In response to a lost time incident (LTI) that occurred at the mine in 2022, the mine management decided to introduce a new safety approach on-site. The initiative began with a comprehensive safety culture analysis conducted by Arti Consulting, involving focus group studies. Employees actively participated in candid discussions, sharing their insights on safety issues and offering solutions. These conversations were meticulously audio recorded, resulting in over 150 000 words collected from more than 100 employees. These transcribed narratives then underwent rigorous semantic analysis, with the assistance of a sociologist, to identify and dissect patterns of unsafe behaviour. This analysis found areas for improvement, particularly in near-miss and incident reporting, quality of safety toolbox talks and effectiveness of pre-work risk assessments. Subsequently, mine management deliberated on these insights and devised corrective actions. An emphasis was placed on involving all employees in the corrective actions through communication training, empowering them to own the decisions and changes made. These impactful measures were seamlessly integrated into FQM’s Think! Safety Program, which embodies FQM’s sensible health and safety strategy. FQM partnered with Strika Entertainment (Strika) to develop innovative visual-first safety communication tools that use illustration, animation and graphic design to simplify complex messaging into easy-to-understand edutainment. As part of this approach to safety communications, Cayeli and Strika revamped the safety toolbox talks to encourage employees to voice their concerns and receive feedback when their suggestions were implemented. The response from employees has been positive, with over 200 unsafe behaviours and conditions reported within the initial two months of launching the Think! Safety Program. Remarkably, the Cayeli Mine has not experienced any LTIs for the past 500 days as of 9 December 2023. This paper encapsulates the dedicated efforts to transform Cayeli into a safer mining operation.

This paper reviews the developments in understanding of the entrainment mechanism and its modelling in industrial flotation processes over the last 30 years. Both valuable and gangue minerals in the pulp zone of an industrial flotation machine can be transported through the froth zone to the concentrate launder in the water which must also be transferred from the pulp zone to maintain a stable froth zone in conventional flotation. A size dependent portion of each entrained mineral continues in normal circumstances to the concentrate launder. The size dependency arises because the larger particles are able to drain more successfully from the froth region. Gangue minerals are recovered by a number of mechanisms, entrainment being an important one in many cases. The entrainment mechanism is discussed on the basis of the pattern observed in recovery û size data for minerals. Its industrial implications are discussed and means of minimisation of the importance of the mechanism are also discussed. Various means proposed for mathematical modelling of the entrainment mechanism are also described. The effect of process variables on key parameters in these models is reviewed. Properties of both the pulp and froth zones are discussed where needed and means of taking additional measurements with devices developed over the last ten years are discussed as part of the collection of more detailed data on the flotation process in general and the entrainment mechanism in particular.

Desktop X-ray powder diffraction using a D2 PHASER equipped with fast linear detector was performed on several iron ore and mill scale samples. Data were analysed using cluster analysis and Rietveld quantitative phase analysis. The quantitative mineralogy of both materials could be established. Thus the input is provided for understanding the energy consumption and the CO2 emission during iron production. Furthermore, tabletop XRD allows to distinguish iron ore from mill scales and to quantify their mixtures.

During 2009 the technical services staff at Barrick Gold Corporation's Australian Business Unit conducted a review of their five underground mines that utilise pastefill as the backfill component for these operations. Of the five mines reviewed three use dry tailings and two use wet tailings plants. The primary aim for these reviews was to determine whether pastefill was the right option to be used, and if not, what where the alternatives. The reviews undertaken focus on several areas including, paste plant operation, reticulation and barricade techniques, the geotechnical requirements for pastefill in regards to the current mining methods, the consideration of alternative methods, capital and operating cost histories compared to initial estimates, and a cost benefit analysis of pastefill against other mining methods. The main benefits from the use of pastefill is increasing the extraction of the resource, reducing or eliminating the need to leave pillars. In some mines the use of pastefill is geotechnically driven, to manage high stress environments or mining induced seismicity. A third benefit of using pastefill in some circumstances is that it reduces dilution, however it is considered that this is not a valid argument for most of the mines reviewed. At two mines no alternative to pastefill was determined, whilst differing extraction and filling strategies were potentially identified at the other three mines. The reviews developed cost benefit curves for those sites that had alternative mining methods to assist in determining whether pastefill is the right option to use for any particular stope. At the grades typically mined in each operation, pastefill was the preferred option to use. In all mines, pastefill was determined to be the best option at this time.

Globalisation and consolidation is resulting in the mining industry coming to be dominated by a small number of very large companies seeking to lever assets and knowledge to create wealth. As an important service provider to the mining industry, the minerals tertiary education sector needs to understand these global drivers and respond to them. However, it is under-resourced and its sustainability is under challenge in all Western countries. Through the establishment and funding of the Minerals Tertiary Education Council (MTEC), the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) has provided a unique opportunity to build a national, world-class minerals tertiary education environment in Australia that can be sustained in the long-term. This paper reviews how the global changes occurring in the mining industry provide the model for what needs to occur in the minerals education sector and how MTEC is the logical vehicle to facilitate these changes. It concludes by suggesting that the time has come to integrate the minerals tertiary education providers into one business. Furthermore, the vision should be for a global mining education academy based around a virtual university capable of servicing the cultural diversity and continuing education needs of the global minerals industry.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is expected to become one of the main technological instruments for mid-term reduction of CO2 emissions into the earthÆs atmosphere. Besides the reduction of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, the implementation of CCS would have various negative consequences, which are û if at all û only poorly covered in the current socio-political discussion. Taking into account all aspects of CCS, the outcome of a comprehensive and conclusive assessment of CCS against the background of the sustainable development concept is uncertain. When assessing the overall impact of CCS in a holistic approach, a variety of aspects with effects on sustainable development are affected. Besides economic issues, various other effects of implementing CCS should be taken into consideration. These include for example additional costs for CCS facilities and processes and a decrease in powerplant efficiency due to high energy requirements of capture processes, and various ecological and societal aspects, such as higher demand for combustible, resulting in faster depletion of reserves and higher land and water use and the provision of jobs along CCS technology chain. This paper presents an approach for a structured sustainability assessment of CCS based on the multi attribute decision-making (MADM) method analytical hierarchy process (AHP). The functioning of the presented methodology is exemplified at the case study of a German coal fired powerplant.

The foundation of effective leadership is communication. You can have all the leadership theories, models and training you want, but in the end it is all about leaders talking to, listening to and understanding the point of view of those below and above them.The foundation of effective safety is peoples’ behaviours. Every incident, every near miss and every safe act comes down to what one person does and how that affects themselves and others. We tend to focus these behavioural considerations on the people at the ‘coal face’, those most in harm’s way. But it is the individual behaviours of everyone in the organisation, particularly those at the top, which are just as (if not more) important. The foundation of effective safety leadership in the mining industry is that it starts at the top, with the individual behaviours of leaders. The behaviours of each and every leader will be reflected in their teams. And where their teams are made up of leaders, these leaders will pass these behaviours on to their teams and so on. It’s the sum total of what people see their leaders do and what they do as a result, that creates the ‘culture’ of the business – and it’s this culture that makes or breaks how safely people work.
