In truck-based hauling systems, the mine haul road network is a critical and vital component of the production process. As such, underperformance of a haul road will impact immediately on mine productivity and costs. Operations safety, productivity and equipment longevity are all dependent on well-designed, constructed and maintained haul roads. With the advent of autonomous haul trucks, the haul road itself becomes all the more critical to the success of these type of operations; not only in relation to mine operators requirements for safer and more efficient and predictable haulage systems, but also in response to autonomous truck manufacturers’ requirements for a more predictable and controlled operating environment. This paper presents a brief summary of the state-of-the-art in surface mine road design and then proceeds to examine the design and technological challenges associated providing a safe, predictable and affordable road for autonomous mine haul trucks. The paper serves as a basis for evaluating the contributions that enhancements in road design and management can deliver to autonomous mining operations, an initiative that also has scope for adoption within the operating life of many mines, haul roads and haul trucks.

In the search for significant new economic base-metal resources within Australia during the early 1970s BHP's Exploration Department had observed that the majority of lead and zinc con- centrate production in Europe and the USA came from carbonate- hosted Mississippi-Valley-type (MVT) zinc-lead deposits, but Aus- tralia had no history of production from this class of deposit despite several very favourable geological environments, par- ticularly in the large Palaeozoic sedimentary basins. An exploration-research team was established in 1975 and the Lennard Shelf region, near Fitzroy Crossing, was selected as a most promising geological environment. Previous exploration for this class of deposit by other companies in Australia had largely used conventional exploration philosophies (geological mapping, geophysics and geochemistry to identify specific drill targets) but BHP sought specialist advice from a North American expert and adopted a grid-drilling philosophy, which involved wide spaced relatively deep diamond drill holes on a regular grid pattern, and statistical evaluation of the results. This technique resulted in the discovery of the Blendevale Deposit in 1978 in an area which had previously been explored by other companies using conventional methodologies. The deposit was delineated and a pre-feasibility study carried out in 1985 indicated that the resource of 20 Mt @ 8.3% Zn, 2.5% Pb was a marginal proposition.

Raise drilling (or raise boring) is not a new technology or methodology. The first raise drilling machine was developed by The Robbins Company (TRC) of the USA in 1962. TRC manufactured the first tunnel boring machine (TBM) in 1952 and Jim Robbins, the founder of the company wanted to ‘turn the TBM concept on its head’ so to speak.Many improvements have ensued in the 50 years since the first machine. Such improvements include advances in the drill rod and thread design, cutters and reaming heads. Raise boring would not have been possible without the development of the tungsten carbide insert cutters and there have been big advances in both the carbide technology and in the mechanical design of the cutters.Over time mines have developed deeper with a greater use of diesel equipment resulting in greater ventilation requirements. This in turn means larger and deeper ventilation shafts. There have also been improvements in directional drilling techniques. This all combines with the need and ability to construct larger shafts using the safe method of raise drilling. With suitable geotechnical conditions the RBR900VF is capable of drilling shafts to a diameter and depth of greater than 8 m and 2000 m respectively. Greater diameters are possible over shorter lengths with suitable ground conditions.The RBR900VF was designed and manufactured to specifications developed by Macmahon. This machine has the greatest thrust and torque capability of any machine in the world. It enables cutters to be more heavily loaded in the larger diameter heads and this is essential for efficient rock excavation. Additional features of the new machine include minimal manual handling to provide a safer working environment and higher strength steel for the drill rods providing additional safety margin.CITATION:Wood, R J, 2014. Precious metal deposits containing fine-grained disseminated or dispersed gold-silver form by reactions between metal-bearing hydrothermal fluids and sedimentary host rocks. Host rock permeability and chemical composition exert a primary influence on the fluid movement necessary for any primary dispersion halos to form around ore bodies, and determine whether a disseminated style orebody itself will even form. Where the mineralized rocks are relatively unfractured the margins of the orebodies exhibit abrupt decreases in gold content, and strong corresponding decreases in the contents of other metals. Primary dispersion patterns of this type are difficult to recognize and commonly are only a few meters (or less) in width. If the host rocks were well shattered and broken before mineralization, remnant amounts of the hydrothermal fluids may be dissipated in fractures lateral to or above the ore zones. This causes geochemical anomalies to form with clays and silt- size silica within the fractures over distances of up to at least 30-50 meters away from the main orebodies. The tendency for large primary dispersion halos not to form around these deposits explains the disappointing results from so many drilling programs where no multi-gram gold-grade material was even found: if large areas and apparent large volumes of rock contain one gram or less gold that likely is the "orebody" and not a halo effect around high grade mineralization.

The size of this carbon dioxide reservoir and the extent of permeation of the sediments by carbon dioxide are not known.Therefore caution in evaluating the natural gas potential of the region is advised.

The Vienna Wood hydrothermal is hosted by mid-oceanic ridge type basalt in graben morphology and is located in the Central Manus Basin. The hydrothermal field is about 300 metres in diameter and consist of a sulphide mounds and tall huge death and active chimneys. From the three distinct ore types collected from the Vienna Wood site, the dominant ore minerals recognised are pyrite, wurtzite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, Fe-oxide and gangue minerals of anhydrite, gypsum, barite and silica. The consistencies in the paragenetic sequence and in the spatial distribution of the sulfides across the three ore types suggest that similar hydrothermal process exist across active and death chimneys. Fluid inclusion studies reveal a homogenisation temperature of 190-260¦C and an average salinity of 5.1-5.4 wt per cent NaCl equiv. The pH of the hydrothermal fluid ranges from 4.2 to 6.1. Bulk chemical analyses indicate that the mineralisation in the Vienna Wood can be classified into the Zn-(Cu-Pb) type of mineralisation. The tenors of the ore and mineral assemblage resemble those of the Mid-oceanic ridge system and ancient ophiolite hosted massive sulphide deposits of Cyprus and Oman.

Thermal constants such as thermal con- ductivity and thermal diffusivity of rock and coefficient of heat transfer of airway wall are the most important characteristic values which decide accuracy of prediction calcula- tion. However, quality of rock is not homoge- neous and water content in rock varies with location and so, a method for in-situ measure- ment of thermal constants must be taken in. The method developed by us is to measure in- situ rock temperatures at two different depths from airway wall. It is simple and we found its accuracy is good enough in the engineering Sense.

In order to develop downstream processing routines for iron ore and to understand the behaviour of the ore during such processing, extensive mineralogical characterisation is required. To determine mineral associations, mineral liberation and grain size distribution, imaging techniques have to be used. There are two main imaging techniques used for the characterisation of iron ore, ie, Optical Image Analysis (OIA) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). In this article a QEMSCANTM system is used as an example of SEM methodology and results obtained from it are compared against results obtained by the CSIRO ‘Recognition3/Mineral3’ OIA system.Both OIA and QEMSCANTM systems have advantages and drawbacks. Even though the latest QEMSCANTM systems can distinguish between major iron oxides and oxyhydroxides, it is still problematic for QEMSCANTM to distinguish between iron ore minerals very close in oxygen content, eg haematite and hydroheamatite, or between different types of vitreous goethite.QEMSCANTM also can misidentify minerals with close chemical composition, ie haematite as magnetite and vitreous goethite as haematite. In OIA, iron minerals with slight differences in their oxidation or hydration state are more easily and directly recognisable by correlation with their reflectivity. In both methods, the presence of microporosity can result in some misidentification, but in SEM methods misidentifi cations due to microporosity can be critical. Low resolution during QEMSCANTM analysis can significantly affect the textural classifi cation of particle sections.The main conclusion of this study is that, for low iron content ores or tailings, QEMSCANTM can provide much more detailed information on the gangue minerals than OIA. However, for routine characterisation of iron ores with high iron content and containing a variety of iron oxides and oxyhydroxides, OIA is a faster, more cost-effective and more reliable method of iron ore characterisation. A combined approach using both techniques will provide the most detailed understanding of iron ore samples being characterised.

Subsurface development requires some geotechnical conditions and challenges. Most of then are related to the compatibility between tunnelling system and surrounded ground conditions, and design criteria. Design criteria usually involve lining pressure and ground control of displacements. In order to fulfil these requirements, geotechnical parameters have to be obtained as well as construction aspects have to be taken into account for predicting the tunnel behaviour. The Brasilia Metro is presented as a case history illustrating the geotechnical conditions and challenges for its implementation. It is 42 km long, including tunnels excavated in collapsible porous soils by the New Austrian Tunnelling Method. The Brasilia porous clay presents some characteristics, which may lead to large deformations due to structural collapse. Empirical methods were calibrated for collapsible porous soils and then applied to predict tunnelling-induced settlements. Settlements due to soil structural collapse modify completely the expected settlement profile, increasing their values from the tunnel crown to the ground surface. Consequently, surface settlement trough volumes were also greater than the ground losses around the tunnel. In this case history, structural collapse of porous soils played an important role and must have been taken into account to predict correctly the settlement trough and profile. Numerical simulation has shown that settlement magnitudes due to structural collapse are strongly dependent on the soil stiffness reduction after collapse and the extent of the collapsible zone.

One of the primary objectives when optimising a mining complex is to maximise its value for the primary stakeholders. In order to achieve this objective, it is necessary to holistically optimise all aspects of the mining complex, including decisions of when to extract materials from the available sources, how to blend or stockpile these materials and how to best use the available processing streams to satisfy customer demand. Existing methods for global, or holistic, optimisation ignore the compounded effects that risk has on the performance of a mining complex. Over the past decade, several stochastic optimisation approaches have been proposed to integrate various forms of uncertainty into the open pit mine design and production scheduling. These methods, however, are limited in their ability to simultaneously optimise the production schedules for the portfolio of mines, material destination policies, the use of the available processing streams and the various products that are produced at each location of the mining complex.This paper aims to discuss a new method for the global optimisation of open pit mining complexes with geological uncertainty. The proposed generalised methodology is capable of modelling and holistically optimising mining complexes, including aspects related to production scheduling, blending, stockpiling and non-linear interactions that often occur in practice, but are over-simplified in existing models. Two case studies are discussed to highlight the need for these complex, stochastic optimisers. First, a case study for a nickel laterite blending operation highlights the need to integrate geological uncertainty into the optimisation in order to ensure product quality constraints are respected. Financial markets are subject to constant change and project finance, as a product within these markets, adapts and will continue to adapt with those changes. A meaningful discussion of these adaptations requires an understanding of differences between non-, limited and full recourse project finance. The reasons sponsors seek and lenders provide project finance are also pertinent in this context. Arranging a project, financing package can be a canplex and time consuming task. An important first step is choosing the right advisor for the assignment and then structuring and tailoring the financing before approaching prospective lenders. The last thirty years has seen changes in the needs of sponsors and the ability of lenders to meet them. These shifts in preference may well be a guide to the future. Several major project financings successfully canpleted in Australia in the last few years and more recent examples are broadly discussed. Project finance will be keenly sought in the future and the form and nature it takes will continue to vary.

The geotechnical model is the cornerstone of any mining geotechnical design and as such the confidence level and reliability of the geotechnical model is paramount. The geotechnical model confidence level needs to be commensurate with the level of design that is being applied or study that is being undertaken. The geotechnical model is made up of several components and the reliability of the data underlying these components ultimately determines the reliability of the geotechnical model.Data reliability is linked to the quantity of data collected, the spatial distribution of the data collected, quality of the data collection and the interpretation of the data. In a typical project, there is an opportunity to improve data reliability through the scoping, prefeasibility, feasibility and final design and implementation stages.Currently, very little quantitative guidance exists in the literature on assessing the confidence level of geotechnical studies, although there have been attempts by various authors (Haile, 2004; Haines, Swart and Kruger, 2006; Read and Stacey, 2009; Dunn, Basson and Parrott, 2011) to qualitatively describe what level of geotechnical data is required. Recently a number of authors (Read, 2013; Fillion and Hadjigeorgiou, 2013; Thomas, 2013) have outlined methods that could be applied to assess the reliability of some types of geotechnical data that are used in the development of geotechnical models.This paper briefly discusses some of the factors influencing data reliability and the geotechnical model confidence and some of the tools available.CITATION:Dunn, M J, 2014. The paper focuses on how rock bolts are loaded in different rock masses, as well as in pullout tests. Three analytical models for rock bolts are presented in brief, one for bolts in continuously deformed rock masses, one for bolts in blocky rock masses, and one for bolts in pullout tests. The bolt models are used to interpret measurement data for rock bolts from three sources and to help specify the modes of axial load in the rock bolts. It is found that in continuously deformed rock formations fully coupled rock bolts have only one axial stress peak. The position of the axial stress peak moves towards the far end of the bolts with increasing rock deformation. In blocky rock masses several axial stress peaks may appear in the rock bolt. The position of this kind of axial stress peak does not change during the entire loading process. For rock bolts in pullout tests, decoupling of the interface always occurs first at the loading point. The decoupling front moves towards the far end of the bolt with an increase in the applied pull load.

The competitive coal market has required coal producers to put more effort into coal quality control. Successful quality control requires a good estimation of the in situ coal quality as well as a good estimation of the probable fluctuation of the in situ coal quality during production. Geostatistics offers a very promising way to meet this requirement. A geostatistical approach toward the coal quality control problem is presented. Two models, the prediction model and the conditional simulation model, have been developed for coal quality data from two large export coal mines in central Queensland, Australia. The mine planning and scheduling aspects based on this and other potential applications of the models are addressed.

MANPOWER RESOURCES The optimisation of human effort has been an ongoing and significant process in the coal industry since industrialisation as we know it began. The extent to which the changes sought have been achieved has, over the years, been in the main determined by the economic and political forces existing at that time and the determination and character of the individuals involved. The question of optimisation is therefore not new in our industry. Hopefully this presentation will demonstrate to the reader the effect of previous measures adopted by industry to optimise all facets of its operation and in particular that of the human Resource.

Copper-Cobalt hydrometallurgy has seen a resurgence in recent years with the development of projects in Zambia and the DRC. Many of the flow sheets are unique in their use of hydrometallurgical techniques to improve performance compared to the older types in current use. The emphasis has moved from direct copper electrowinning/stripping, with multiple stages of precipitation for removal of impurities and concentration of cobalt, to innovative use of solvent extraction and ion exchange with higher cobalt recoveries to final product. The poor quality direct electro-won copper has been supplanted with solvent extraction-electrowinning; with consequent production of LME 'A' quality metal. Many of the precipitation steps in cobalt recovery and concentration, have been replaced with solvent extraction; while the remaining precipitation stages have been enhanced with use of oxidants to improve impurity removal. Operating experience from two of these circuits has shown the benefits of the new technologies and the improved overall recovery of both copper and cobalt into higher quality products.
