Upward pressure on all mining operations is coming from the triple bottom line. To some extent this is being offset by the rise in mineral prices, but this may or may not continue. The other serious issue facing all companies is the replacement of economic reserves as exploration levels over the past decade continued to decline in line with falling mineral prices. In order to underpin the sustainability of the mining industry it is necessary to continue to reduce cost, reduce the mine environmental footprint, whilst increasing community benefit. At the same time it is imperative that we increase the economic reserves. The highest risk is in adding new mineral discoveries as the strike rate for economic discovery decreases. Gekko Systems Pty Ltd recognises that the most simple and risk averse route to increasing economic reserves is to reduce cut-off grade in the mine, thereby bringing formerly uneconomic reserves into the economic category. We have been developing a new process flow sheet which embodies the triple bottom line and the issue of economic replacement of reserves. This paper describes this flow sheet and presents four examples where this concept is/can be applied to bring about triple bottom line benefits. Sustainability can only be assured if we are the ones in control of our environment, costs and reserves.

Coal augering is an ideal method for recovering coal from the highwalls of open cut coalmines. Coal augering is a simple process whereby additional flights are added to the auger cutting head and auger holes are drilled at 1.9 m diameter up to 200 metres deep. Traditional monitoring was located at the mouth of the hole and if methane was encountered above two per cent, inert gas was delivered into the mouth of the hole to deplete the oxygen content at the auger cutting head below 12 per cent. The auger operator was asked the question ‘how do you know that this is the case?’ Trials were undertaken to prove that the oxygen content at the cutting head did drop below 12 per cent (the lowest limit for methane to ignite, also known as the oxygen nose point). Initial trials showed that the oxygen content in the mouth of the hole did not drop below 12 per cent and modifications were made to hold the inert gases in the mouth of the hole so that the auger flights could take this inert gas into the hole. In-hole monitoring, after completion of mining and after extracting the auger flights, showed that the atmosphere quickly returned to fresh air. In-hole monitoring was also tried during the augering process and yielded valuable results. An optical computing system was used to determine spacings and frequencies in geological fabrics and engineering joint fabrics.Three-dimensional arrays of joints were plotted on an equal-area net. Directions in which true spacings are seen were determined from these plots. Photographs taken along these directions were used for optical computing.

Australian rutile and zircon concentrates are refined raw materials and not manufactured products. The composition and properties of the grains are therefore fixed by nature. Specifications and assay certificates should take this into account by eliminating unnecessary provisions which only increase the time and cost of analysis.INTRODUCTIONThe raw material from which Australian rutile and zircon concentrates are isolated is beach sand on the coast of New South Wales and Southern Queensland. The principal current operations are in an area between Sydney and Brisbane.The sands consist principally of quartz particles, but they contain from 1 per cent to 50 per cent of a mixture of heavy minerals, including zircon, rutile, ilmenite, monazite, leucoxenic grains, chrome spinel, chromite, garnets, corundum, topaz, brown spinel, olivine, epidote, clinozoisite, tourmaline, magnetite, hematite, and cassiterite. The major components are zircon (25 to 60 per cent), rutile (25 to 50 per cent), and ilmenite (5 to 50 per cent).The so-called leucoxenic grains are not a definite mineral species but an alteration product of which the major components are titanium oxides and silica in varying proportions.Primary concentration is by gravity, using spirals or various forms of pinched sluice (Pullar, 1962), the resulting concentrates being redressed on wet tables. A commonplace, sometimes overlooked or taken for granted, article of everyday existence is the tin can. Produced from thin gauge low carbon steel, and commonly coated with a mere 60 millionths of an inch of pure tin, the product is however strong and corrosion resistant. Tin-plate serves a myriad of purposes-the most important being to meet the requirements of the canning industry. Australia's newest steel product, tin-plate, was first produced on a commercial scale during the early part of August, 1957. The commissioning of the Hot Dip Tinning Plant (Fig. 1) of The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. at Port Kembla, marked the culmination of a proposal dating back to 1939, the advent of World War II having caused its deferment to the present time.Cornish tin is known to have been exported as early as 300 B.C. to Syria and tinned vessels existed even in the year A.D. 23. The tin coating of plate could be described as an ancient art, believed to have had its origin in Bohemia in the thirteenth century. During the next 450 years, the process spread through Saxony to Pontypool in Monmouthshire, but it was a further half century before any measure of success was obtained.Perhaps the two greatest milestones in tin-plate manufacture were the rolling of iron plates first carried out in 1728, thereby outmoding the hammer formed sheet, and more recently, the development of the electro-deposition process. The commercial development of the shallow (2200 ft2 400 ft) Windalia sand reservoir at Barrow Island provided the opportunity to conduct an intensive drilling programme using equipment and techniques designed for optimum performance.During the initial exploratory and reservoir delineation phase, 12 specific Windalia test wells were drilled using drilling equipment with an optimum depth range of 6QOO ft - 8000 ft and a 9 5/8 in by 7 in. casing programme was employed. The average time from commencement of move-in to rig release exclusive of coring for five representative wells was 187 hr during this phase.Development drilling commenced December 1966 with one rig, with the second in operation January 1967.As of January 1 1968, 168 development wells had been completed. The two rigs employed are drive-in units equipped with a telescoping .gelf raising doubles mast.Optimum depth range with 4 1/2 in. drill pipe is 2500-4000 ft. Casing programme is 8 5/8 in. by 5 1/2 in. Efficient performance was achieved immediately. The average time from commencement of move-in to rig release for 15 wells drilled early in the development programme was 99 hr.By application of experience and further modification of techniques, performance was improved to an average time of 72 hr per well for 15 wells recently completed.The major drilling problem on Barrow Island is surface hole drilling due to the very hard surface limestone combined with complete loss of circulation at sea level.In this operation, significant improvements have been effected. During the exploratory phase drilling, 12 1/4 in hole to set 9 5/8 in. casing, average penetration rate was 23 ft/hr. At the commencement of the development programme penetration rate, drilling 10 5/8 in. hole to set 8 5/8 in. casing, was 28 ft/hr for the 15 early wells considered, improving to 55 ft/hr for the 15 recent wells considered.This programme is a team effort and much credit must be given to the enthusiastic co-operation of the two drilling contractors.The current field record is 2 days 4 hr with a 4 1/2 hr move including the drilling of mousehole and rathole.

A typical high silica low grade magnesite from the Salem area of Southern India, was used in studies to develop a suitable flotation system involving commercially inexpensive sodium oleate as the collector together with other reagents which can give a product of the required grade with an acceptable recovery. It was found that the presence of metallic ions such as Cu+, Fe+++ or Ca++ introduced by the addition of their salts, or by their formation with the addition of hydrochloric acid to react with magnesium and calcium carbonate in the me, can act as effective depressants for silica. The addition of 'hydrochloric acid' was found to give best results.

Technology is playing an increasingly large role in the operations of our mines. There is a temptation to regard the implementation of technological systems as the objective itself when, in reality, systems are used to support a business process. Only when the process succeeds will the systems be seen to succeed. Understanding the distinction between system and process is critical. This understanding, together with the resultant holistic approach, is considered to be critical to successful implementation and operation of Mine Control process. This paper examines the critical factors essential to success in establishing and sustaining a Mine Control process that maximises benefits to an operation. These factors have been developed during the author's experience of nearly 30 years in Mine Control projects across over 50 sites. Each factor is discussed in relation to real world examples at well-known mines.

THE Great Cobar Company Limited owns 1100 acres of freehold, which include the Great Cobar Oopper Mine and smelters, the Cobar Gold Mine, the Cobar-Ohesney Copper Mine, and the Great Peak Gold Mines.ORE OCCURRENCEThe ore-bodies in the first three mines-namely, Great Cobar Copper Mine, Cobar Gold Mine, and Cobar-Ohesney Oopper Mine are, speaking generally, lenticular deposits of evidently more or less complete metasomatic replacements of the country rock along a line of powerful faulting. These lenses vary from 150 ft. to 400 ft. in length, and from 20 ft. to 100 ft. in width.

This paper summarises the development t,) date for the Hidden Valley Gold (HVG) Project. It starts with the original exploration work, covers the detailed feasibility study activities and concludes with the current phase of extra exploration drilling. A brief technical summary has been made from the various mining, process and environmental studies that were undertaken as part of the project approval process. A discussion of the influential non-technical factors is included, as well as a view of the future prospects for an operating mine. The project was always seen as marginal, given the low grades, small resource and short mine life. However the capital and operating costs were lowered with aggressive design and it was regarded an acceptable development by CRA. The opportunity was taken to review the project when delays in start-up were encountered. An updated financial evaluation showed a subeconomic resource in 1990 terms and this resulted in a new exploration phase to identify a larger deposit.

Low-sulphidation epithermal gold deposits, which form in quasi-hydrostatic convective hydrothermal systems, frequently contain chalcedony within high-grade ore, which has been interpreted to be a crystallisation product of amorphous silica. To deposit amorphous silica rather than another silica polymorph at elevated temperatures requires very high silica concentrations, because of its relatively high solubility. Only extreme boiling caused by decompression followed by wall rock heating upon structural dilation, can achieve this. As gold deposits with amorphous silica it must be produced by the same mechanism, particularly since extreme boiling is also a very effective mechanism for gold deposition. Recent developments support this view; the first is the detailed isotopic analysis of chalcedony-bearing high-grade veins reported from Hishikari, Japan, in which oxygen isotope results are indicative of extreme boiling and hydrogen isotopes indicate initial deposition of amorphous silica. The second is the finding of chalcedony within geothermal pipe work in the Rotokawa geothermal field in New Zealand. Rotokawa is a comparatively hot field (335¦C at depth); hence separation of the steam-water mixture produced by the wells is undertaken at a comparatively high temperature (220¦C) to minimise down-stream silica scaling. Even so, silica scale, some of which is chalcedony, does occur, under similar conditions to that in low-sulphidation epithermal deposits. Evidence of chalcedony forming under these conditions, reinforces the interpretation that decompressive boiling is the main deposition mechanism for gold in low-sulphidation epithermal deposits. It is possible that there is sufficient drop in temperature due to decompression that, at least initially, the silica deposits directly as chalcedony. Low-sulphidation epithermal gold deposits that do not contain chalcedony, such as those in the Philippines, may form at temperatures too high for chalcedony to directly form. The recognition of decompressive boiling as the main deposition mechanism in low-sulphidation epithermal deposits means that exploration can focus on zones where this has taken place by combining paleohydrological reconstruction and structural geology.

Taking the Presidential chair of the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, my first duty is to thank you for the high honour and position you have conferred on me. A position entailing the highest compliment the Institute could bestow on any of its members, and one which I feel my inability to properly fulfil, inasmuch, as you have men in your ranks of the highest scientific training residing on that great continent where the head quarters of the Institute is established, while my engagements here will not permit me leaving this colony but for a very limited period.About six years ago, during the time the mining boom was at its height, there came to this colony from England, Germany, and South Africa, several mining engineers, who in conjunction with the mining engineers here, formed an Institute which we soon found we were not able to maintain. The mining boom gradually died away, and many engineers have left the colony to find employment in other parts of the world. We made overtures to your Iqstitute to take us under your wing, which you were kind enough to do, and the outcome is that you have come over 1200 miles to hold a meeting in New Zealand. The paucity of members residing in this colony does not admit of a large attendance; but we heartily welcome you to our shores and hope you will enjoy a holiday visiting some of the principal mining centres and exchanging ideas, which not only improves our minds, and widens our field research, but also tends to lead to further economic improvements in the extraction of metals the earth contains...

THE following short paper on the Blair Athol coal-field will no doubt have a twofold interest to members from the fact that its main seam, known as the "Big Seam" of a maximum thickness of 91 ft without a band, is unique, being probably the thickestseam of high-grade clean coal yet known, and also because of the interesting problem it presents the colliery engineer-viz., which system of mining is the best to secure the highest economical extraction.Location - Blair Athol is a mining township in Central Queensland, situated at an altitude of about 1100 ft. above sea-level at the end of a branch railway line 74, miles from Emerald, on the Main Central Western line, and 240 miles by rail from Rockhampton.Geology - The coal-measures appear to lie in a shallow basin of about four or five square miles in area, surrounded on all sides by slates and schists, which are overlaid oh three sides by alluvial deposits of up to 150 ft. in thickness, and on the fourth by a thick basalt bed, as yet unproved, some miles beyond which the auriferous slates outcrop. These alluvial deposits have been largely worked in years past and gave high gold returns, the chief diggings being Clermont and Macdonald's Flats in the south, the Springs and Black Ridge in the north-east, and Yankee Creek and others on the west. The surface of the coal-fields may be described as unbroken, but undulating, with gentle southerly dip, the watercourses opening out into wide flats. Results of flotation tests on lead-zinc ore from Broken Hill, N.S.W., confirmed that flotation at pH 9 in the presence of cement gave poorer metallurgical results than flotation at pH 7. Additions of 2 kg/tonne wood raspings [e.g. blackbutt (Eucalyptus pilularis), blue gum (E. saligna), brushbox (Tristania conferta), or turpentine gum (Syncarpia laurifolia)l had little effect at pH 7 but greatly accentuated the deleterious effect of cement at pH 9. This was shown to be caused by e:xtractives (e.g. polyphenols and carbohydrate materials) derived from woods at pH 9. The proportion of extractives, as shown by DV absorbance spectra, increased with increase of pH and was affected by various salts.Additions of 1 kg/tonne Al2(S04)3.16H20 when cement or cement and wood were present showed that metallurgical results obtained by flotation were then very simHar to those in the absence of cement or wood or both. This was ascribed to lower pH values in the presence of aluminium sulphate and possibly to specific chemical effects.Additions of aluminium sulphate appear to offer an economic solution to the problem of treatment of ores contaminated with cemented fill at Broken Hill.

The conditions under which vanadium is rendered insoluble by silica in the alkali-roast process have been investigated starting with both slag and reagent-grade materials. The inert phase is a glass formed slowlyfrom soluble NaV03 produced at lower temperatures. It contains approximately 30 per cent V in a partly reduced state; iron is not a principal component. Some of the vanadium in the inert phase is slowly returned to a soluble form by heating in an oxidizing atmosphere below the temperature at which the glass is formed (750°C). As the reaction leading to the required, soluble form of vanadium is also slow between 600 and 750° optimization and control of the temperature profile and atmosphere in the furnace, and the residence time of the solids, are necessary to ensure high vanadium extraction during subsequent leaching.

The Northparkes E26 Mine is AustraliaÆs first block cave mine. This paper presents an outline of the design and construction philosophies that drove the project development and details the excavation, ground support and construction methods used. Features of the block caving method at Northparkes include:high production rates from multiple drawpoints;hard blocky ore fractured along gypsum veins; andloading/unloading of openings due to mining induced stresses.The drawpoints are subjected to high abrasion from the flow of ore, as well as impact from both secondary blasting and from the production LHDs. In order to withstand these harsh conditions and to ensure a low maintenance environment, a conservative approach to ground support was taken. The experiences gained during construction are discussed and whether the design expectations have been achieved. By installing a high level of ground support during excavation of the openings subject to mining stresses, a low maintenance environment has been constructed. Operating costs are therefore minimised and Northparkes E26 Mine continues to produce at the lowest cost per tonne of all Australian underground mines.

It is located high in Andes Mountains, over 3000 metres above sea level, 316 km from the nation's capital, Santiago.The maintenance service supplied to Los Pelambres over the past 13 years has evolved to the point that FLSmidth now provides an integrated service crucial to the management of their customer's assets. The contract initially involved specialty mechanical, electrical and instrumentation maintenance and has developed to encompass maintenance planning and plant control systems.The integrated partnership has delivered excellent results in the areas of improved availability, reliability and return on investment. The operation is now amongst the industry leaders in plant availability.The integrated maintenance service has delivered: An increase in plant availability from 93%, in the first year, to 96.5% today, generating approximately $50 million additional income per year, Quality work procedures, Process and equipment improvements, Major shutdown planning involving more than 700 personnel, 6000 parts and over 2 000 discrete activities.The ongoing success of the partnership requires a high level of understanding between both companies. A commitment to maintain a long term sustainable relationship, based on a ""win - win"" culture, is the key to this success. The mining industry has recognised for some time the importance of supporting programs which serve to educate the Australian public about the socio-economic benefits of mineral resource development. More recently, industry leaders have realised that the future development of the industry will depend on attracting sufficient young people to commit to a career in the industry. Apart from lending support to the traditional education institutions in Australia, the industry now has the opportunity to participate in the development of education programs in museums. Whilst historic, mining-related theme parks such as Sovereign Hill and Coal Creek in Victoria serve very effectively the objective of relating past mining activities to the socio-economic development of Australia, there still exists the need to provide a facility which, under the same roof, excites interest in geology, mining, mineral processing and the role of minerals and energy in modern society. The redeveloped Geological and Mining Museum (the "Mining Museum"), which is located in The Rocks area of Sydney, meets this objective. With the central themes of formation and transformation this new Museum, which aims to be the best of its type in the world, will use modern museum exhibit techniques and the resources of the Minerals and Energy Information Centre to educate the community including teachers and school children. In the best tradition of museums, outstanding mineral and other collections will complement a comprehensive range of interactive, high technology exhibits which will include a number of exploratory "hands on" facilities. Australian companies are joining with Government to fund this exciting new museum. There is still a need for industry professionals to realise that a modern "mining" museum is no longer just a repository for objects of mining heritage but is also an important centre which serves as an important educational and public relations interface. The Education Section of the new "Mining Museum", which is linked closely with the new Minerals and Energy Information Centre, will be working closely with appropriate mining-related Tertiary institutions to develop specific career programs aimed at secondary students who wish to pursue a career in the mineral resource industries.
