The metallurgical works of the Electrolytic Zinc Company is situated on the Derwent Estuary, approximately five miles north of the city of Hobart and near a relatively dense housing area. Zinc concentrates, consisting chiefly of zinc and sulphur, have been roasted at Risdon for 53 years;- recently at rates of 1, 100 tons per day. The zinc content of the ores is converted to zinc calcine (ZnO), which is a dusty material. The calcine is leached with acid to form zinc sulphate, which is then electrolysed to make zinc. The sulphur is oxidised during roasting to sulphur dioxide, part of which is converted to sulphuric acid and part is dissolved in estuarine water which is then discharged to the Derwent Estuary. Sampling and sample preparation systems at the Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited port of Dampier, W.A., were developed for two separate objectives. 1. The need for rapid determination of physical properties. On stream size analysis enables lump ore and pellet- ized ore physical properties to be monitored and controlled whilst shiploading is in progress. As a control procedure this facility allows optimum shiploading rates con sistent with physical quality control. 2. The need for accurate chemical analysis. Chemical analysis on ship- loading forms the final link in overall quality control procedures encompassing the operation of mining, railway and port blending. Thus maintenance of specification products with minimum variation in chemical characteristics is ensured.

This paper presents preliminary resu]ts from field studies which were conducted to establish, among other things. the influence of medium viscosity on the partitioning behaviour of dense medium cyclones and drums in mineral applications, using frrrosilicon- ba_sed media. The medium vicoosit.y- was measured on-line, and partitioning behaviour was determined using ore sampling and density t r acers . The results demonstrate that viscosity is an important. operating variable, influencing ,eparat.ing density and efficiency under certain conditions. The implication is that metallurgical performance can be optimised by manipulating viscosity, either by appropriate selection of medium' characteristics or by automatic alarming and/or "ontroi using signals from the on- 1. i ne viscometer.

In the exploration of an area proposed for the establishment of an underground colliery, consideration of all land and mining titles and consents has early priority. Environmental aspects have become more meaningful. Preliminary assessments of previous geological knowledge, together with new geological and geophysical data from surface investigations, condition the decision to proceed with costly diamond drilling programmes. Methods other than fully cored diamond drilling have a useful application in appropriate circumstances. Drilling exploration is conducted in stages of increasing density of-hole spacing to the point where, with holes at 1 km centres, reserves are categorized as measured. The programme is subject to constant review in the light of market changes.

The Dome Mine of Timmins Mining company is located in South Porcupine, N.W. Ontario. The orebody being mined partially lies in the No. 3 shaft pillar. Stability analysis has been carried out to establish the influence of nearby mining on ground movement in the shaft vicinity. Mathematical modelling of shaft displacement has been done for stope layout at depths from 180-210 m and distances of 10-50 m from the shaft. Analysis indicated that ground displacement around the shaft is below 1 mm/m and one third less for cut and fill than in the case of open stope mining. The result of the investigation was later confirmed by cut and fill mining of this orebody.

Dewatering of solutions is one of the most significant requirements of the resources industry, as practically all mining endeavours use water in their process for leaching, extraction, cooling, dilution or for potable drinking water.

A 3D graphics modelling system has been applied to longhole stope ring design at Z.C. Mines, Broken Hill, NSW. This has been in operation for a four month period (January, 1988). The purpose of this application was to provide computer assistance to mine planning engineers and blasthole design draftsmen for the longhole design process, particularly by: 1. reducing the- volume of tracing, drafting and geometric manipulation which is a significant feature of the manual design process, 2. providing additional design drawings to enhance the conception and implementation of stoping design.

This paper describes the use of modelling and simulation techniques in the analysis of the heavy medium plant at the Lead/Zinc Concentrator of Mount Isa Mines Limited. The objective of the study is to determine how to increase heavy medium plant recovery at a higher than current rejection rate in order to achieve the desired throughput through the grinding and flotation sections of the concentrator. Three options were considered: 1. Install smaller aperture preparation on screen to enable the cyclones to be fed finer materials. Install smaller diameter cyclones. 3. Maintain low viscosity medium.

The foam behaviour of low molecular weight polypropylene glycols (PPG) was investigated as a function of concentration and molecular weight (190 - 2000 g mol-1). For each polypropylene glycol, foam stability increases with concentration and passes through a maximum, beyond which foamability is suppressed as the solubility limit of the glycol is exceeded and droplets of glycol form. Light scattering data as well as static and dynamic surface tension results provide the key information leading to these interpretations. A maximum in foamability was observed for the PPG molecules with increasing molecular weight (caused by a change in molecular conformation at the interface). This suppresses the Marangoni effect and leads to a decrease in foam stability.

The biohydrometallurgy of gold is based on different processes which could be grouped into four main groups (Attia, Litchfield and Vaaler, 1985; Karavaiko et al, 1988; Groudev, 1990): 1. bacterial oxidation of gold-bearing sulphide minerals by chemolithotrophic bacteria to facilitate the subsequent chemical extraction of gold; 2. solubilisation of gold from oxide ores by means of heterotrophic bacteria; 3. recovery of gold from solutions by biosorption; and 4. microbial modifications of the surface of gold-bearing sulphide minerals to improve the subsequent gold concentration by physical dressing methods (eg flotation, oil agglomeration).

Six Australian coals were selected to determine their potential to produce, ultra low ash (less than 2 per cent) coal by progressive size reduction followed by density separation and/or froth flotation. Density separation in organic liquids is effective in the absence of contaminating liberated mineral matter which can be removed by froth flotation with several cleaning stages. The limit of cleaning of these coals was an ash value of 1 per cent while commercially attractive yields were obtained at 2 - 3 per cent ash depending on the coal.

Portable crushing at Duval Corporation's Sierrita open pit mine has proven both the economics and operability of large, hardrock, portable systems. In-house expertise was utilized to create a system incorporating both operational and maintenance features requested by operating personnel. The monitor/control system involves over 400 channels of information and is based on a DEC 1SI 11/2 microprocessor communicating with seven microprocessor-based data acquisition systems over a 4-wire, multidrop link. The year and one-half successful operation affirms the design philosophy and the hardware/software implementation.

The oxidation of nickel sulphide and copper sulphide concentrates, and coal, has been studied under non-ignition and ignition conditions using Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and Thermogravimetry (TG). The non-ignition reaction was favoured by slow heating rates < 10°C min-1), low masses < 10 mg) and an air atmosphere. Under these conditions, the typical stepwise oxidations of the various sulphide minerals present in the concentrate were observed as resolved exothermic peaks in the DTA curves and weight losses in the TG curves. Above a heating rate of 10°C min-1 , sample masses in excess of 10 mg and an oxygen atmosphere, an ignition reaction was induced, as indicated by a major high energy exotherm in the DTA curve and a major rapid weight loss in the TG curve. The ignition temperatures of the minerals under ignition conditions, found for 15 mg samples heated at 20°C min-1, were 434°C for the nickel sulphide concentrate, 372°C for the copper sulphide concentrate, and 230°C for the coal. By plotting a curve for mass against ignition temperature at constant heating rate and extrapolationto zero mass, a value of 470°C was obtained for the mass independent ignition temperature of the nickel sulphide concentrate. Ignition temperatures and extents of reaction at various temperatures were obtained using the TG technique in a novel manner which produced heating rates of 4500°C min-1. Under ignition conditions, the oxidations approximate to flash smelting conditions.

The sizing and classification circuits at the Mt. Newman Beneficiation Plant have performed satisfactorily. Investigations have been aimed at solving minor problems and achieving small' improvements. Emphasis has been placed on cost reduction rather than metallurgical performance. It has been found that some circuits will give better performance with the sieve bends removed. 1.0 BACKGROUND Mt. Newman. Mining operates a major iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Rainfall is sparse (average 250 mm/year). Current mining is all above the water table. What rain there is tends to run off quickly instead of soaking in. The total operation produces about 30 Mt/ year of saleable product. Most of this product comes from high grade crushing plants where ore from the quarries is simply crushed and conveyed to product stockpiles. About 3 Mt/ year comes from the Beneficiation Plant.

The author describes 1. The classification and characteristics of various thick seam mining techniques in various Japanese coal mines. 2. Practices of thick seam mining methods experienced in Taiheiyo Coal Mine. Currently, thick single lift, simultaneous multi lift and non simul- taneous multi lift mining methods are adopted as underground flat thick seam excavations in Japan. These are now reliable and effective in increasing the extraction ratio. At Kushiro Colliery of Taiheiyo Coal Mining Co., these three thick seam mining methods have been used. According to the results, if solidification of the top lift goaf is essential, the non simul- taneous multi lift mining method is the most effective in increasing the extraction ratio without minimising productivity of each lift and it points out that further development of this method is necessary.

A natural gamma-ray gauge has been devel- oped for discriminating overburden and inter- seam sediment from low ash coal located on a moving conveyor belt. It is based on the difference in natural radioactivity of the sediment and overburden compared with the low ash coal, which is detected with a highly ef- ficient "Polyscin" NaI(T1) gamma-ray detector located underneath the conveyor. Gauges have been successfully installed on the bucket wheel boom of the two coal dredgers at the Loy Yang Open Cut. They are used to warn dredger operators that they are digging overburden or sediment and that action is required to avoid the sediment or divert it to the waste dump rather than send it to the coal bunkers at the power station.

A model of dense medium cyclones is developed based on balancing the terminal velocities of the discrete particles due to the centrifugal force against a random turbulent eddy velocity. An expression of the form P - or Q _ 1 100 e."A where P is the partition number., is a function of cyclone efficiency, particle size and density differential between the particle and medium, and is the slurry spilt, is developed and may be used for regressing plant partition data. The above model provides an understanding of peculiarities of the partition curve such as asymmetrical tails, elevation of the cutpoint and elevation of the d50 with increasingly fine feed. The effect of feed variables such as particle size, medium viscosity and changes in spigot or vortex finder diameter is shown. A means of convoluting the partition curve with various feed washabilities is discussed together with how the above may be used to evaluate plant performance for a variety of feeds.

Problems with the cyanidation of copper-gold ores Copper-rich gold ores are becoming increasingly important both within Australia and overseas (Dayton, 1982; Deng and Muir, 1994; Muir et al, 1993; Sceresini and Staunton, 1991; Solis, Hefter and May, 1995; Wall, Hornby and Sethi, 1987). The purpose of this paper is to present a detailed account of the development of the Blasthole Diamond Drilling method of stoping now used at the property of Big Bell Mines Limited, in Western Australia.The ore body is one of the large low grade gold deposits of this State, being a continuous lens 1,850 ft. long and ranging in width from 15 ft. at the ends to 120 ft. at the widest part, the average width being 59 ft. It was first worked in 1913 by a local syndicate, and up to 1924, when operations ceased, 64,448 tons of 3.4 dwt. ore were mined from a shallow open cut. Between 1928 and 1932, 15 deep diamond drill holes were put down to test the ore body at vertical depths ranging from 100 to 700 ft. On the information gained from these drill holes, Premier Gold Mining Co. Ltd. began underground explQration. A level was driven at a depth of 253 ft. and crosscuts put out to the full width of the, orebody at intervals of 100 ft. along the strike, all ore broken being put through a sampling plant. On completion of this sampling,' Big Bell Mines Limited was formed as the operating company, and a plant with a capacity of 1,000 long tons per day was erected and mining and milling operations were commenced in 1937.
