At 4 MPa gas pres ure and 30°C the sorptive capacity of 10 selected Australian dried coal ranges from 17 to 23 m3/tonne of CH4 and 27 to 36 m3/tonne of CO2. Values for moist coals are about 25 per cent less. At 20°C, sorptive capacities are about 18 per cent greater. No clear relationship between coal rank and sorptive capacity was established.The permeability of coal to gas is dramatically reduced by progressive hydrostatic confinement. No single 'permeability' for a coal can be established because of relative affinities of coals and the gases (Ar, CH4 and CO2) used in experiments. Bedding plane permeability is significantly greater than permeability normal to bedding. Dependent on gas/coal combinations, permeabilities without confinement ranged from 150 to 0.05 millidarcies, and with 8 MPa hydrostatic confinement from 1.0 to 0.001 md. Generally, permeability is increased by reduction in temperature, and reduced by increase in moisture as one changes from Ar through CH4 to CO2. In retrospect, it is preferable to ubject permeability sample to 8 MPa hydrostatic stress only once, because changes occur in the samples and it is difficult to use other gases successively.The initial rate of desorption, DP, does not appear to be a reliable index of proneness to instantaneou outbursts for Australian coals.The methods used for determining quantitative gas-coal properties appear suitable and reliable for testing other coals.

The electrical conductivity of electrolytes is very important in metal electrowinning and electrorefining processes as it has a very large influence on the energy consumption. There are few measurements of the electrical conductivity of zinc electrowinning electrolytes available. The electrical conductivity of zinc electrowinning electrolytes were measured over the following range of concentrations, 100 to 200 g/L H2SO4, 0 to 80 g/L Zn and 0 to 20 g/L Mg, at temperatures from 25 to 60 C. The specific conductivity of zinc electrowinning electrolytes may be expressed as a function of concentrations of sulphuric acid, zinc and magnesium and temperature by the following equation: k(S/cm) = 0.004 + 0.00115 t + 0.00282 [H2SO4] t - 0.00114 [M] t + 0.3442 [H2SO4] - 0.0451 [1-12SO4]2 - 0.1058 [M]ò[H2SO4] - 0.0224 (M] + 0.0286 [M] 2 where t is temperature (C), [H2S04](moI/L) is sulphuric acid concentration and [M](mol/L) is a sum of zinc and magnesium concentrations, ([Zn]+[Mg]). The specific conductivity of zinc electrolytes is a function of the concentrations of the hydrogen ion and free water molecule, which are calculated by taking into account the second ionisation constant of sulphuric acid and the stability- constants of zinc-sulphate and magnesium-sulphate complexes at 25 C.

Australia's gold mining industry has seen a resurgence in the past seven years - a resurgence the likes of which has been seen in very few, if any of this nation's other mineral industries. Industry experts are predicting that Australia could become one of the world's largest gold producers as the future of the South African gold industry looks increasingly tenuous under the present political crisis in that country. Therefore, it is utterly ludicrous for the Federal Government to introduce a tax which will see the Australian gold industry "wither on the vine."The Queensland State Government is utterly opposed to a tax on gold. Anyone in their right mind, who has seen the statistics could only agree with our stance. In 1984/85, activity in the gold mining industry is estimated to have accounted for over $750 million in national income, over$1,200 million in national output, and tax revenue of at least $115 million as well as providing more than 16,000 jobs. Chartered accountants Coopers and Lybrand's survey on the gold industry last year showed an increase in exploration expenditure by gold producers and explorers by up to 36% in 1986 from 1985 levels. That level is expected to be maintained in real terms for most of the remainder of the decade under the present tax arrangements. This is in contrast with the mining sector as a whole, where a recent Australian Mining Industry Council survey forecasted a 14% FALL in production.

The electrochemistry of leaching gold with thiosulphate has been studied systematically by using electrochemical techniques. Results show that the current peak of anodic dissolution of gold occurs at about 50 mV(SCE) and there is passivation in the polarisation curve in the thiosulphate solution in the absence of ammonia. Ammonia markedly improves the anodic dissolution rate of gold and reduces the passivation as well as making the current peak shift negatively. Results also show that there is no current peak for a cathodic process in the range of 0 -900 mV(SCE) in the thiosulphate solution in the presence of oxygen but absence of cupric ions and ammonia. In the solution containing 0. 1 mol/L cupric-ammonia ions, the peak occurs at about -400 mV (SCE) and the cathodic process is characteristic of a catalytic reaction. Oxygen presents a predominate effect on the cathodic process. Based on the electrochemical investigation, the following mechanism of leaching gold with ammoniacal thiosulphate has been proposed. Ammonia reacts primarily with gold ions on th anodic surface of gold and the formed A (NH3)2+ rea~s then with S2O 3 in solution to form the stabler Au(S203) 2 . Cu (NHS) 4 gains electrons on the cathodic surface and is reduced to CU(N) ? which is then oxidised by oxygen and regenerated into Cu(NH3) 4 after entering the solution.

The ore used in this test program was a composite sample from Waihi, New Zealand containing 2.7 g/t gold and 36 g/t silver. From the testwork it was found that a high concentration of sodium cyanide (0.1 per cent) was necessary to ensure a high recovery of both gold and silver. There appeared little chance for either differential leaching or adsorption of gold and silver. The addition of bentonite clay decreased the rates of gold and silver dissolution. The addition of 50 g/1 NaCI had little influence on the rate of silver extraction. The addition of 5 g/l carbon gave adsorptions of 70 per cent of the gold and 35 per cent of the silver, indicating the possible presence of base metal cyanides in solution. The addition of excess sodium sulphide only precipitated 70 per cent of the silver in solution, adding further evidence to the presence of base metal sulphides. The production of separate silver and gold products was not possible by either preferential leaching, preferential adsorption of gold on carbon or preferential precipitation of silver.

It is estimated that in less than a decade, high-grade iron ore reserves in South Africa will be depleted, leaving only low-grade ores with a dominant lithology of banded iron formation (BIF) hematite. BIF is a complex ore reserve as it is typically liberated below 1 mm, resulting in high energy costs. However, due to its abundance, its beneficiation potential should be evaluated to maximise recovery at an acceptable product grade. To develop a beneficiation program for BIF hematite, the first step is to determine the effect of two laboratory crushing techniques on mineralogical characteristics, specifically liberation and shape. For this study, the cone crusher and high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) were used. The Electron MicroProbe Analysis (EMPA) and Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) were used to compare the mineralogical characteristics. The liberation characteristics for hematite are similar for both crushing techniques; however, HPGR preferentially liberates quartz. HPGR achieved 8– 12 per cent additional quartz liberation in the greater than 80 per cent and 100 per cent liberation classes respectively and specifically in +75 μm size range. Improved quartz liberation is associated with lower energy requirements for downstream milling and improved separation efficiencies for beneficiation units that operate in this size range. Both samples displayed similar shape characteristics; most particles were elongated smooth and the rest were elongated angular. Good hematite liberation is expected at grinds of 212 μm to 150 μm. Further consideration should be given to throughputs, energy efficiency and downstream equipment selection prior to selecting a crushing technique.

The traditional method of scale-up uses the population-balance model. In particular, the selection function values for a material are determined in a laboratory mill and a variety of correlations are used to scale these values to plant scale mills. For example, the factor D2-5L (D-mill diameter, L-mill length) appears in many power correlations. The number of collisions is proportional to the number of balls (aD2L), the frequency of mill rotation ((x 1/4D-) and effectiveness of impact ((XD), which gives rise to the 'D2.5L' expression. However, what is lacking in this expression is that it does not throw light on the intensities of collisions. In other words, the collision intensities in both laboratory and plant scale mills are implied to be identical. This fact has been very limiting. Alternatively, the collision frequencies and intensity of impacts can be computed with the discrete element code. This code computes the motion and collision of each individual ball in the ball charge. Therefore the number of collisions and the fraction of collisions in the energy range Et, E2.òòE. (collision energy density) are calculated for a given mill size and operating conditions. Then, using the breakage function determined in drop-weight experiments, the evolution of size distribution is computed for a lab mill. The collision frequency and energy density for larger mill sizes are shown. The fundamental theory outlined for the calculation of size distribution is equally applicable for the large mill, which is the basis for scale-up.

This paper analyses problems associated with cement based technique in metal mines, and provides a new mining technique of packing the tailing sand and water into solidified material. In the new technique, the cementing agent is a solidifying material containing a high percentage of water and tailing sand. The sand and water solidify into the packed body at the same time. The slurry of the packed body varies widely in concentration and suitability for different mining conditions. It consists of two liquid materials, each composed of a cementing agent, tailing sand and water. The thick liquids are transported to the packing place at the same time. Their pumping property is good; they do not solidify or block up the pipe during transportation. At the packing place, the two liquids are evenly mixed.The mixed liquid flattens out well and its solidifying speed is so fast that it solidifies into a packed body within a very short period of time. The compressed strength of the packed body can reach 1.2-5MPa in one day, which satisfies the requirements of different mining conditions. By using the new mining technique, all the tailing sand can be used again in the packed body and it is low in cost and investment. The mechanisation is easy and thus the working efficiency is increased and the use of labour decreased. Contamination problems caused by i. Diamond drilling is a relatively new commodity in terms of drilling. The first known diamond drilling activities were carried out in the Swiss Alps around 1863 when the Swiss engineer M Leschot designed and made a tube with a diamond set face which was used in probing ahead drilling for the Mont Cenis tunnel (Figure 1). Craelius AB which today is a part of the Atlas Copco Group was formed in 1886. The name Craelius is a family name and the founder of the company was Per Anton Craelius (Figure 2). He went to the United States to study this new technology using diamonds to extract core samples and when he returned to Sweden designed his first diamond drilling machine. It was a man-powered drill needing a crew of six men, two to crank the unit, one to feed, two to power the flush pump and a foreman (Figure 3). As time passed through research and development, the original design was improved and manpower was substituted for steam engines and later combustion engines or electric motors (Figure 4). During the 1930s the drills radically changed designs and took the form of the short stroke drills which to a certain extent are still in use today. The original design of these drills have been refined during the years, hydraulic chucks, gear boxes and other improvements have been added.

East Guangdong tin province overlaps the southmost part of the mesozoic magmatic arcof continental margin type in Southeast China and is dominated by mesozoic syntectic magmatism,which associated to tin mineralization. It is distinguished from Nanling tin province but quite close to NW Bolivian tin province in both tectonic and magmatic relations.Tin deposit's mostly of cassiterite-sulfide, cassiterite-silicate formations are localized along exsocontact zone of granitoid batholith or stock, boundary area of volcanic depression, or, within volcanic edifice. Petrochemistry studies show tin was concentrated as intermediate-acidic magma evolved by fractional crystallization. Xiling tin deposit of vein type related to extrusive... the lava dome was formed at T C 221-301 and at very shellow depth,seems to correspond to type A in classification for Bolivia tin deposits by J.N.Grant. Tashan tin deposit of dissemination type related to hypergene intrusive facies,with mineralization occured in endocontact zone of granite porphyry dykes is considered as porphyry type,which spported by H-0 isotope and gas-liquid inclusion evidences. It formed at T C 250-430, comparable to Bolivia porphyry tin deposits,but at a greater depth 1.3 3.0km.A model for known tin deposits in East Guangdong was worked out. A good prospecting perspective was revealed for the potential type of tin deposit in East Guangdong--subvolcanic porphyry tin deposit.

The distribution of p(~rphyt1 copper deposits, in time as well as place, is used to propose an occurrence model based on the genesis models of Sillitoe and Rona. A magmatic source of the metals is accepted. The characteristic metallogenic epoch and the migration of the mineralization event along an elongate metal province are explained as the result of subduction of an obliquely- oriented strip of mineral-enriched material on the oceanic plate. Two mineral-enriched trails emanate from a hot-spot source of high-intensity hydrothermal activity in an oceanic rift. Because the whole plate system moves relative to hot spots, the hydrothermal source appears to migrate along the rift, and the two trails are not parallel to transform faults, but form a broad "V" centred on the hotspot. Source loci are spaced at intervals of about 3000 km, resulting in the possible repetition of metallogenic epochs, in a subduction zone province, at about 100 m.y. intervals. The position of the mineral-enriched strip can be found graphically, given ages of a series of deposits in a province, and the plate convergence vectors. This knowledge provides an exploration tool at regional scale and, by reflection across the rift, the potential for exploration is extended across oceans. The model has implications for commodities and deposit types other than porphyry coppers.

The treatment of slimes has of late years been the chief difficulty in connection with cyanide work, in which much time and money has been spent in endeavouring to find a practical solution of this problem.The processes at present in use are:-1. Filter pressing, as practised in Western Australia.2. Decantation, as practised in South Africa.Filter pressing after apitation affords a ready and efficient means of separating the gold bearing solution from the slimes and admits a perfect washing thus ensuring a high extraction but the very high working costs forbids its application except on high grade material, the chief items being the necessary large amount of labour, compressed air, and general upkeep, none of which can be materially reduced. The decantation method has the ad vantage of low working cost but on the other hand the low extraction obtained, due to imperfect washing, the length of time occupied in' the treatment, and the enormous bulk of solutions to be handled, are serious disadvantages.In either process it is absolutely necessary to obtain a perfectly clean solution before starting the gold precipitation by zinc, which is a source of much trouble. Also the high first cost of installing either plant is such that they can only be adopted on mines with very large working capital.

The development of low displacement, moderate to high-angle reverse faults during the formation of the Argo gold deposit within a tholeiitic gabbro host-rock involved a four stage evolution of deformation and associated hydrothermal alteration. Fault zone evolution and Au mineralisation were associated with high fluid flux, fault-valve behaviour in a severely misoriented fault zone. The far-field maximum principal stress was approximately east-west and horizontal, and the far-field minimum principal stress was subvertical. The fault system developed at approximately 400¦C in a transitional brittle-ductile regime. Initial Stage 1 deformation involved ductile shear and the development of potassic (biotite-rich) alteration assemblages and associated reaction-weakening in shear zones; minor quartz extension veins were formed. Stage 2 is marked by the onset of predominantly brittle shear failure, the widespread development ofmatrix-supported breccias in fault zones and a change to sodic (albite-carbonate-quartz) alteration styles. Extension veins have limited development. Stage 3 is also dominated by brittle shear failure and characterised by a change to quartz-carbonate assemblages in fault-fill veins and breccias. However, large arrays of extension veins are also well-developed adjacent to faults. In Stage 4, widespread subhorizontal quartz-carbonate-biotite extension veins were developed, but shear failure was limited. This is an ABSTRACT only. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.

The locality from where these specimens come is distant about 12 miles due south from the township of Bingara New South Wales, and is known locally as Carney's Reef, Barrack's Creek, Top Bingara. The formation traverses the western side of a serpentine spur from the main range, which runs through the country from the other side of Tamworth to Inverell, in the New England District. It has a due north and south trend, with an easterly underlay slightly out of the vertical. The formation has been opened up at different points for a distance of over two miles, and each place showing gold in the stone, and no place more than three to four chlins apart, the whole distance along the line of Reef being leased. The formation varies in thickness, the smallest being about 1 foot and the widest about 10 feet. The following is a list of properties, and description of work done on them at present. First south, and about one and a half miles from Hanion Brothers' old BalIarat claim due north, Court and patty hold a tenacre lease. The formation outcrops near the south boundary, and gold is obtainable in the stone. In the centre of the lease a costeen pit has cut the capping, which shows gold, and about two chains from the north boundary another one cuts the capping, also showing gold. The reef averages, where exposed on this property, 3 feet wide.

The flocculation of hydrophobic magnetite with gold was examined as a possible means of recovering fine (95 per cent were possible for 1.5 - 3.0 ¦m and 5.5 - 7.5 pm gold sizes. The effect of process variables on the flocculation process was explained by variations in the adhesive force between the gold and magnetite.

The mostly submerged New Zealand sub-continent has a complex geological history and an active oceanographic regime that provides opportunities and challenges for offshore mineral exploration. Known deposits include polymetallic Fe-Mn nodules and crusts, polymetallic massive sulfides, phosphatic nodules, titanomagnetitie ironsands and placer gold deposits. Currently exploration interest is high with some 3.5 per cent of the EEZ under prospecting permit or application.   Article 76 of the UNCLOS convention allows coastal states to have sovereign rights over areas of the seafloor that are natural prolongations of the landmass that constitute submerged parts of the continental margin as extended continental shelf. New Zealand has substantial areas of elevated ridges and plateaux beyond the 200 M EEZ that form extended continental shelf. New Zealand has nearly completed a ten year, $44.4 M programme to define its outer extended continental shelf. New Zealand will lodge its outer limits of the extended continental shelf with the UN-appointed Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf in 2006, which if accepted, will enclose ~1.8 million km2 beyond the existing EEZ. Ocean Survey 20/20 is a follow-on marine mapping programme to underpin resource exploration and environmental management of the EEZ and extended continental shelf.

Experimentation with new methods, materials and machines to improve primary drilling and blasting is a continuing practice in the hard rock quarry operations of the BMI Group. These experiments will continue in the remote hope that one day we may produce a perfect feed for the primary crusher. As this day is still a long way off, the necessity to break oversize boulders will be a problem to be faced for the foreseeable future. To gauge the efficiency of primary blasting from this point of view, BMI monitor the tonnes of material crushed in the primary crusher for each boulder requiring secondary breaking. Over a period of about 10 years, this figure has improved from 30 tonnes througi the primary crusher per boulder, to 100 tonnes per boulder at our largest operation, which produces in excess of 2 million tonnes per year. Evan with this improvement, 25,000 boulders require secondary breaking each year This paper does not provide the solution to this problem, as like primary blasting, it will have to be constantly reviewed as new products and techniques become available. Narrow vein gold mineralisation generally contains both fine (<100 ¦m) and coarse (>100 ¦m) gold particles. The in situ size and shape, deportment, distribution and abundance of the particles controls deposit sampling characteristics, grade distribution and metallurgical properties. Particles can range from individual disseminated grains, clusters of particles and masses above 1 cm in size. At each end of the coarse-gold to fine-gold spectrum, the samplability of a deposit ranges from relatively simple for fine-grained disseminated gold particles, through to extremely difficult for very coarse particles. Deposits generally show a background grade of mineralisation dominated by disseminated fine gold particles. Drilling will resolve the background grade well, though is likely to considerably understate the grade related to the coarser gold particles. Gold mineralogy has a significant impact on metallurgy, with key factors affecting recovery being particle size, deportment, liberation parameters and silver content of gold minerals. For coarse gold particles the focus should be on liberation and the early removal of the particles from the mill circuit by gravity concentrators and gold traps. Finer particles will require more grinding to liberate prior to flotation or cyanide extraction. The determination of gold particle sizing is thus required to minimise evaluation and geometallurgical uncertainty and lower project risk.

Recent exploratory work has greatly enlarged our knowledge of the geology of the sedimentary basins of Western Australia. The most pros-pective of these for oil explorati on are believed to be the Canning, Carnarvon, 'and Perth Basins.The search for oil. in, the Canning Basin has fora the most part been concentrated in" the western part, where four main structural units are now recognized - the Lennard Shelf, Fitzroy Trough, Jurgurra Terrace, and-South Cariizin.g Basin. Of these the Leonard Shelf may. be the'most prospective. The principal objective on the Shelf is the Devonian sequence, which in-cludes well'developed reef complexes. The Lower Carboniferous is regarded., as a further objective, as it contained small quantities of oil in theMeda No. I well.In the. Carnarvon Basin most explorati on has been conducted in the coastal belt of'Tertiary folding, especially in the Cape Range-Rough Range area. -The discovery of oil in the first test well. drilled.in the-basin - Rough Range no. 1 - raised great hopes, for the quick discovery of a ecmuercial field. However the other wells on Rough Range have been dry, and no discoveries have-been made in the-wells drilled on other anticlines.in the basin.
