In this paper is given a general description of the Black Star copper orebody, its relation to the lead orebodies and the controlling factors in the mineralisation.Copper ore, in the form of chalcopyrite, was first noted at Mount Isa in 1930 during the surface drilling campaign to prove the downward continuation of the silver-Iead-zinc orebodies.Details of the occurrence are set out in table 1.Other sub-commercial widths were also disclosed and examination of these occurrences showed that commercial mineralisation could not be expected within 800 ft. of the surface. It was therefore decided that further exploration was not warranted until underground workings had advanced to this horizon.Detailed surface mapping showed two small outcrops of the host rock of the copper orebody. One occurrence, 50 ft. x 75 ft., was of quartz, with leaching suggesting former dolomite. Another outcrop, further north and west of silicified shale, with low grade oxidised copper, has recently been found. Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited has maintained an interest in the screening of iron ore fines (nominally -6 mm). However, no dry screening process had successfully demonstrated acceptable separating efficiencies at high tonnage rates, low operating costs, and mechanical reliability when screening iron ore fines (containing up to 6% free moisture) at sizes of around 1 to 2 mm. A new type of vibrating inclined screen has recently been developed which is claimed to have a non-blinding screening surface. It was decided to test a pilot scale unit in an existing pilot plant located at Hamersley's facilities at Dampier, Western Australia. The appropriate operating parameters such as vibration speed and feed rate were determined using one fine ore type. Mats with different aperture sizes, and different feed moisture contents were also tested. Trials were then conducted on various fine ore types to indicate the effect of different size distributions on separating efficiencies. The effects of feed moisture content were determined with these ore types, and a blend of lump (nominally -30+6 mm) and fines was tested to compare the screen's performance with that of the bottom deck of the minesite product Screens.

Alliance Gold Mines was established in the early part of 1994 to acquire the assets of Diamin Resources NL at Maldon, Victoria. These comprised Exploration Licence 3422, some 20 sq km in area and enclosing the main part of the Goldfield, and a CIP plant - with a nominal capacity of 250 000 tpa - which was commissioned in 1988. Between 1988 and 1992 Diamin had mined - by open pit methods - and milled around one million tonnes of low grade gold ore, and recovered 55 000 ounces of gold. By 1992 the known shallow resources had been depleted. Historical gold production from the Maldon field is about 1.75 million ounces, at the surprising average recovered grade of 28 g/t. The last significant mine closed in 1926: since then there has been no comprehensive exploration program, though Lone Star Exploration NL tested part of the field for shallow open-pittable resources in the 1970s and Carpentaria Exploration Company Pty Ltd carried out widely-spaced drilling on the three main reefs from 1979 to 1982. Diamin (1983 - 1994) commenced a careful compilation of old mine records and newspaper clippings, and drilled several cored holes.

The long continuing controversy over the Origin of fusain, whether it is a product of primeval forest fires, or of special conditions of weathering (including bacterial decay) of the vegetal debris concerned prior to, burial, has now been extended, to include the possibility that fusain is a product of the coalifaction process subsequent to deposition, so that doubt may reach even to its time of formation.The conflicting views on this point are summarised in the following quotations from two recent publications (my italics in each quotation):1. "Recent observations made in peat and brown coal deposits in Australia, England and Germany strongly suggest that practically all fusain is formed by coalifaction after deposition and 'preliminary compression. In deposits of advanced brown coal rank, it normally takes the shape of pieces of wood compressed parallel to the bedding plane; and some fragments consisting partly of fusain and partly of vitrain exhibit the same amount of compression throughout. This would seem to indicate fusinisation after burial, as hard brittle charcoal would be crushed, or else retain its original irregular shape if strong enough to withstand pressure.In some immature deposits, however, where cover is of a hydrostatic nature rather than a vertical compressionar force, occasional pieces of fusinised wood showing very little flattening are present, but such immature deposits seldom contain the proportion of fusain found in higher rank coals. In view of this, and the possibility of introduction of charcoal into peat deposits, it is felt that a small amount of the fusain in coal may represent wood charred before burial, but most of it almost certaInly originated as a product of fusinisation after burial" (Dulhunty, 1948, p.14).

The first stage in the refining of lead blast furnace bullion is the removal of copper and is normally done as a batch process in open kettles.A number of attempts have been made to establish continuous processes operating in reverberatory type furnaces, but the growth of accretions in the furnace has always presented a serious problem.The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. (RH.A.S.) at Port Pirie have overcome this problem by constructing a reverberatory furnace and ancillary cooling system of a novel design.Although a number of mechanical and metallurgical problems still remain to be solved, it is claimed that a workable continuous copper drossing process has been established.INTRODUCTIONLead bullion emerging from the blast furnaces at Port Pirie is at a temperature of about 1100°C and contains, among other impurities, about 1 per cent of copper.The first stage of refining is the removal of this copper by a drossing operation and in the past this was done, batchwise, by allowing the bullion to cool back in 100 ton kettles.At about 700°C, copper dross begins to separate as a crust on the surface of the kettle and this separation was allowed to continue down to about 450°C when the crust was brokenup and skimmed manually using a long handled, balanced, spoon. The dross was then smelted in a reverberatory furnace to produce a saleable copper matte and separate out lead bullion, which was returned to the drossing kettles. The northeast-southwest trending ~25 km2 area incorporating Bald Hill is located 18 km northeast of Haast, and 5 - 7 km west of the Alpine Fault in South Westland, New Zealand. The geology consists of Greenland Group greywacke overlain by a Cretaceous-Tertiary sedimentary sequence and fluvio-glacial/marine terrace deposits of Quaternary age. Alluvial gold in Cole Creek, draining west from the summit of Bald Hill, may be derived either from vein mineralisation in basement rocks or from fluvial or marine terraces.   This paper focuses on the potential for in situ gold and base-metal mineralisation in sporadic, siderite-rich quartz veins that cut basement greenschist facies metasediments that have been overprinted by contact metamorphism.   Throughout the area, vein compositions are dominated by quartz and commonly feature zoned plagioclase. Alteration adjacent to veining within the contact aureole is dominated by 1 - 2 mm, coarse grained biotite, with small amounts of sulphide, and is pervaded by abundant siderite veinlets. Outside the aureole, wall rock alteration to veins consists of fine grained chlorite. Trace element XRF analysis has been used to ascertain base metal concentrations within samples of vein and alteration zones collected from throughout the area. Vein and alteration zone mineral assemblages containing <5 per cent sulphide, with low concentrations of As, Cu, Pb and Zn indicate low potential for gold and base-metal mineralisation in the Bald Hill region. Contact metamorphism of Greenland Group basement in the northeast of the region, is likely due to emplacement of a poorly exposed Cr- and Ni- enriched gabbro. The presence of biotite and andalusite in hornfelses indicate contact metamorphism occurred at temperatures >350¦C and at depths <10 km. Widespread vein distribution does not appear to be related to contact metamorphism or gabbro emplacement. Further research is required in order to establish the fluid source from which the veins were precipitated.

The general mechanism of recrystallisation for cold worked metal is well established, and need be only briefly summarised with a few references to recent articles which clarify minor points. The types of extension, whether by stretching, drawing, hammering, rolling, etc., do not alter the general principles (1), although quantitative results may differ somewhat, particularly with regard to differences between the surface and interior of samples.These principles can be summarised as follows: The first stage in annealing is a recovery (sometimes known as relaxation) of physical properties such as hardness, elongation, etc., without any appearance of recrystallisation; the second stage involves a further alteration in physical properties, accompanying the formation of new recrystallised grains which replace the original structure; a possible third stage involves an increase in the grain size of the completely recrystallised structure by absorption of smaller grains by larger ones. These three stages will be referred to as recovery, recrystallisation, and grain growth. Depending on conditions, the three stages may be clearly marked or may occur more or less simultaneously.For a given annealing temperature, cold deformations below a certain amount fail to give recrystallisation, and the final structure consists of the original grains which have recovered and possibly become more equiaxed. When a certain deformation, critical for that annealing temperature, is given, recrystallisation can occur, and will give the maximum recrystallised grain size.Increasing deformations beyond this give progressively smaller grain sizes.For each material there is a minimum recrystallisation temperature, below which recrystallisation will not occur whatever the deformation or time of annealing. For a given deformation there is a temperature, critical for that deformation, below which recrystallisation will not occur, and above which it will take place with increasing rapidity.

IT is most remarkable and valuable property of mediurn and high carbon steels that they should be so susceptible to heat treatment, the wide range of variability in tenacity, ductility, etc, due to the normal influence of the carbon in the untreated material being enormously inereased thereby.The physical properties of steel and other metals are much more closely related to their structure than to their ultimate analysis.For instance, we may by chemical analysis determine the carbon content of a steel to be 0.5% ; but this information alone is insufficient to enable us to say what are the physical properties of the metal.Such a steel may possess 11 tensile strength of anything from 35 tons per sq. in., with much ductility, up to 80 tons per sq. in., with practically no ductility, according to its heat treatment. A microscopie examination, on the other hand, would show the structural composition of the steel, from which its physical properties could be approximately deduced. Oxy-ACETYLENE system of welding and cutting is at present practised in two forms, which may be described as the high and lowpressure systems. In the high-pressure system the two gases, oxygen and acetylene, are delivered. to the blow-pipe under pressure from properly constructed trade cylinders. Oxygen cylinders are in two sizes, each containing 100 and 200 cub. ft. of gas respectively. These cylinders are charged to a pressure of 120 atmospheres, or 1800 lb. per sq. in. approximately. The acetylene cylinders are made in one size as far as the writer knows, and contain 200 cub. ft. of acetylene gas at a pressure of 10 atmospheres. Each cylinder is provided with a valve and connection for attaching a regulator to "break down" the high pressure in the cylinders to the necessary low working pressure of the blow-pipes, and to deliver the two gases at a constant pressure irrespective of the variable pressures in the cylinders. These regulators can be adjusted down to as low as 1 lb. and are provided with two pressure gaugesone reading the contents of the cylinder in atmospheres, and the other the working pressure in lb. per sq. in. The high-pressure, or "two cylinder" system is compact and can readily be transported from place to place in the works. For this purpose the two cylinders are mounted on an easy-running 4-wheeled truck, which the operator and assistant find no difficulty in manipulating. In the low-pressure system the two gases are delivered to the blow-pipe, one from the oxygen cylinder and the other from the acetylene gas generating plant, which consists of the following:Generating cylinder, half filled with water, into which the cathoide is plunged. The Pebble deposit, located in south-west Alaska, is one of the largest Copper- Gold-Molybdenum (Cu-Au-Mo) porphyry systems in the world, with a current resource of >8 billion tonnes which contain 73.7 billion pounds of copper, 87.1 million ounces of gold and 4.16 billion pounds of molybdenum. The Pebble deposit formed at ~90 Ma, during emplacement of subduction-related hornblende granodiorite porphyry intrusions emplaced into Jurassic-Cretaceous sedimentary, volcanic and subvolcanic intrusive rocks of the Kahiltna Terrane. The Pebble West and Pebble East Zones represent two thermal and fluid centres in a single large magmatic-hydrothermal system. The West Zone extends from surface to about 500 m depth, has thin zones of oxide and supergene mineralisation overlying hypogene chalcopyrite mineralisation, and is amenable to open pit extraction. The East Zone extends to at least 1700 m depth, is higher grade, occurs beneath an eastward-thickening cover of younger sedimentary and volcanic rocks, lacks oxide and supergene mineralisation, and is being evaluated for underground block-cave mining. Most Cu-Au-Mo was introduced with early K-silicate alteration and related quartz-sulfide veins. In the East Zone, a structurally-controlled overprint by advanced argillic alteration significantly increased Au and, to a lesser extent, Cu grades. Exploration potential at Pebble and its surrounding district remains high. Several other porphyry, skarn and epithermal deposits have been discovered in the district, but only limited exploration has been conducted. The eastern, higher grade part of the Pebble deposit remains open in several directions, with significant potential for resource expansion by ongoing, aggressive drill exploration. QEMSCAN« technology is a widely accepted automated e-beam technique providing quantitative and statistically robust mineralogical data to the mining industry. It uses X-ray mapping combined with backscattered electron (BSE) brightness to identify minerals in almost any type of geological material (Gottlieb et al, 2000). Besides the modal mineralogy also the liberation, associations, average grain size and other textural information can be obtained. The aim of this study is to test reproducibility of this technique by setting up and running standard tests on different QEMSCAN« systems. Multiple sample blocks were prepared by our standard operating procedure as epoxy-mounted, carbon-coated, polished blocks. The replicates were measured under the same conditions and measurement parameter settings on different QEMSCAN« instruments. The relative standard deviation (RSD) for the set of measurements was calculated. Generally the reproducibility of the systems themselves was found to be excellent, ranging between 0.4 and 1.5 per cent RSD. The more significant change in the reproducibility was found to be caused potentially by the sample preparation and variation in the mineralogy of the replicates. The measurement parameter settings together with these variations can account for almost 15 per cent RSD for minerals of low abundance. For analysed samples good results for the main phases present in quantities higher than 2 - 5 wt per cent of the total mass of the sample were confirmed with RSD generally below six per cent. Following the experiments, the parameters having the biggest influence on the performance of the QEMSCAN« and its precision are discussed in detail. The importance of sample preparation procedures and measurement parameter settings is emphasised. It is shown that experience and excellence is necessary for getting the most from the automatic mineralogical methods like QEMSCAN«.

IN the determination of very small amounts of lead, the usual analytical methods are far from being satisfactory. Small amounts of lead may be present in the reagents empioyed, and it is customary to run a blank experiment to correct the error arising in this way. When the correction is of small magnitude compared with the amount of lead in the sample, this procedure may be adopted; but when very small amounts of lead are being determined it may happen that the lead found in the blank is as much, or even more, than the lead actually present in the sample, and the analysis has to be rejected. Moreover, the blank experiment cannot check errors which are not common to the blank and the analysis itself eg, the apparatus used in the parallel experiments, etc. It seemed to be desirable, tl;l.erefore, to make an investigation of the problem to ascertain, as far as possible, the nature of the errors arising from the introduction or loss of lead during the analysis, and how far these could be eliminated or corrected for; also, to determine the limits of accuracy of the improved method and the minimum amount of lead that could be reliably estimated.In the investigation, reliability and sensitiveness were regarded as essential features. Speed of operation, on the other hand, was considered of less importance. The amounts of lead dealt with being usually less than 1 mg, there is no alternative to the use of a colorimetric method. The latter, depending as it does upon the development of a brown coloration when ammonium sulphide is added to a very dilute -solution of a lead salt, is far from being a characteristic test for lead. Indeed, it is well known that the salts of most of the commonly occurring metals interfere with this test. Hence it is of vital importance that the lead should be isolated in the form of a pure compound possessing quite definite and characteristic properties before the colorimetric estimation is proceeded with...

THE reduction of iron from the ferric to the ferrous state prior to its titration by permanganate or dichromate may give erroneous results in the presence of other reducible metals such as titanium. Stannous chloride and metallic zinc both reduce tetravalent titanium to a lower form, and so increase the consumption of the oxidizing standard: solution. Sulphuretted hydrogen and sulphurous acid do not reduce titanium, but are slow in action and troublesome to manipulate.Sulphuretted hydrogen is considered to be the best reducing agent for iron in the presence of titanium.* In the method to be described the advantages of the H 2S reduction are retained without the disadvantages of using the gas. The reduction is carried out by the action of a metallic sulphide having a solubility product of such a value that the sulphide iom, are utilized as fast as they are formed, and but little free sulphuretted hydrogen is given off.Cadmium sulphide was the first to be tried, but its solubility product (3.6 x 10 - 2~)t was apparently too low. The reduction was satisfactory, but the excess was very difficult to remove. Zinc sulphide (S.P. = 1.2 x 10 - 23) was found to be quite satisfactoryin both respects. The zinc sulphide is preferably used in the form of an emulsion prepared from pure zinc sulphate as follows: About 100 grm. of ZnS047H20 is dissolved in 2 litres of water. H2S is passed until no further precipitate is obtained, the acid formed being barely neutralized from time to time by the addition of ammonia. The precipitation of the sulphide in a slightly acid solution gives a finer emulsion than that prepared in an alkaline solution, and any iron present remains dissolved. A rapid automated search method, developed for the location of native gold grains in polished sections with a scanning electron microscope (SEM), has been extended to locate platinum group elements (PGE), in particular platinum and palladium, and their minerals down to 1 ¦m in size. Problems associated with the search for PGE minerals are discussed and examples of PGE minerals located with the facility in drill core sections, crushed ores, and metallurgical test products are given.

The Mt Leyshon gold deposit produced in excess of three million ounces of gold and considerable silver over a period of approximately 130 years. Most of this production occurred between 1987 and 2001. Mining commenced in 1872, however it was highly likely that Chinese miners were not only removing alluvial gold from the area but were also mining very rich æreefÆ gold. Records for early alluvial and hard rock mining do not exist, however gold production was probably considerable. In the early 1980s Marathon Petroleum (Australia) Ltd (MPAL) joint ventured into the Mt Leyshon area which had been held as a mining lease by Noranda Australia Ltd since 1968. Noranda at that time was concentrating its exploration effort on the Balcooma base metal prospect areas to the north of Charters Towers. In early 1982 MPALs parent company was taken over by US Steel. This led to an opportunity for MPALs Australian management to purchase all tenements and licences (except for coal, oil and gas) which were duly purchased for $US 1 million. At this time MPAL had a remarkable array of gold tenements (many of which were subsequently mined by other companies) and Mt Leyshon was considered to be the highlight. Early æseedÆ capital ($A 3.1 million) was raised with backers being the Bank of America, the NSW Government Superannuation Scheme, Westpac, private individuals and a Queensland grocery chain by the name of æJack the SlasherÆ.

Mining of the Agnew nickel deposit commenced in 1970 using a variety of underground mining methods, though with mixed success due to the difficult ground conditions. WMC Resources Ltd acquired the operation in 1989, and commenced nickel production with an open pit. In 1995 all production reverted to the rejuvenated underground mine, using exclusively SLC (sublevel caving) methods. Currently the mine produces 1.4 Mt per annum, at an average grade of 1.74 per cent Ni. Underground mining of the Perseverance orebody has always presented significant challenges due to the difficult ground conditions in the weak and altered ultramafic rocks. The range of problems include areas of swelling minerals, intense and extremely weak shear zones, relatively high in situ stress, and in other areas very brittle rocks. Under these conditions rock mechanics input has been and remains a critical element of the mining strategy. Severe ground behaviour difficulties down to a depth of 500 m below surface prompted a review of the mining strategy for the large disseminated nickel orebody, including evaluation of alternative mining methods. However, sublevel caving was ultimately selected as the preferred method, and a re-design of the SLC cross-cut layout followed. A selection of rock mechanics investigations of interest are described, including complex virgin stress measurements, detailed ground behaviour monitoring, and the use of non-linear stress analyses to re-design the mine layout. Subsequent ground behaviour, support design and production scheduling are also described.

Shear-flocculation is one of a munber of potential processes for upgrading deposits of finely-grained minerals and, more generally, for separating different types of particles suspended in a fluid.The smaller the particle the more likely it is to follow the fluid streamlines, or be entrained within turbulent eddies, and the less likely it is to deviate from the streamline and attach to bubbles (froth flotation), other particles (selective flocculation) or magnetic poles (wet magnetic separation). As shown in Figure I, a number of ingenious ideas have been proposed to overcome this effect. The suspended particles are assumed to be 1 - 10 µm.Thus, the efficiency of attaching ultrafme particles of the valuable component (solid circles) to air bubbles, as in process A, is poor. The efficiency may be improved by attaching the particles to oil droplets (Ralston, Kart and Newcombe, 1984) to form agglomerates that rise or sink (B), to magnetic particles (C) (Parsonage, 1988) to allow recovery in a magnetic separator (D), to other particles to form aggregates (E) that are then either attached to bubbles (F) or recovered by sedimentation (G) (Warren, 1992), and to pieces of polyethylene (Rubio and Baltar, 1991) that rise or sink (H).In A, C, E, F and H, the forces that are generally used to ensure collisions result in adhesion are hydrophobic forces, hydrodynamic forces and inertial forces (Warren, 1992). These drag particles from the streamlines to allow particle-particle adhesion. In B and E, soluble polymeric molecules have been added to bridge between particles as they approach closely during a collision.The second major consideration is selectivity. Selective adsorption of the hydrophobe or polymer onto the valuable particles is the key. Many subtle effects of surface chemistry are involved in obtaining adequate selectivity. A complication in real systems is that the initial suspension is often naturally coagulated and needs to be dispersed before being selectively flocculated.

The self-organising map (SOM) is an exploratory data mining technique that is both non-traditional and underutilised. Methodologies based on SOM tend to be data-driven and unsupervised, which makes them ideal to assist in the integrated analysis and interpretation of complex and disparate æmineral explorationÆ data sets. While traditional statistical multivariate approaches have difficulty with relationships that are non-linear and data distributions that are not normal, SOM-based data mining procedures are useful in these circumstances. In a SOM analysis each sample is treated as a vector in a data space defined by the variables; and measures of vector similarity, such as the dot-product or Euclidean distance, are used to order or segment a data set into naturally occurring populations. These groupings are positioned as nodes, or groups of nodes, on a 2D rectilinear representation of the multi-dimensional ædata spaceÆ, which is the æself organized mapÆ. While it is common not to include a sampleÆs locational information in the actual SOM analysis, such information can be used to display the spatial location of samples coded by their SOM node or cluster. If one finds there are coherent spatial patterns belonging to samples from particular nodes, or groups of nodes, then there is strong evidence that the technique is determining patterns and relationships within the data that have natural significance. Variations of the SOM technique may be used to perform broad categories of operations, including: 1. outlier identification û for samples belonging to various nodes or grouping of nodes; 2. function fitting, prediction, estimation or imputation û for calibrating relationships between variables and determining replacement values for missing, null or censored values; 3. clustering, pattern recognition or noise reduction û for determining the natural patterns within a data set; and 4. classification û for classifying samples into the clusters determined in three. In November 1992, the Internal Revenue Commission (IRC) was formed from the rperggr of the Papua New Guinea Taxation Of- fice (PNGTO) and the Bureau of Customs, and now has the re- sponsibility for the administration of direct and indirect taxes on a national basis in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Since that date we have undertaken many initiatives to make the new organisation more efficient and responsive to clients' needs. Income Tax The mining industry is catered for, in respect of income tax, un- der a separate taxation regime within the Income Tax Act (ITA), Division 10, as well as some general provisions within that Act as may be applicable. Division 10 is itself broken up into subdi- visions to cover the different types of mining leases, namely Spe- cial Mining Leases (SMLs) and Mining Leases (MLs), and peri- ods of time during which those sub-divisions apply. Ring Fencing Income tax assessed on the mining industry, with the exception of Mining Leases (these will be explained later), has a project basis of assessment, that is, each project is assessed separately as if the taxable income of the taxpayer from operations attributable to the project was the only assessable income derived by that taxpayer. This is often referred to as "ring fencing". This is an important point to consider because losses from unsuccessful projects cannot be set off against income from those that are suc- cessful, except in very limited specific circumstances, such as where an unsuccessful exploration licence is cancelled or surren- dered. The project basis of assessment applies to both resident and non-resident companies. A relaxation in the 'ring fence' provisions was applied from 1st January 1995, where ten percent of exploration expenditure, in- curred in areas outside of Special Mining Leases and Petroleum Development Licences in a particular year of income, can be claimed as an outright deduction which is limited to ten percent of the tax otherwise payable in that year. This was introduced to encourage exploration in PNG.

In this paper, the use of topology preserving projections (Sammon maps) and neural networks are considered as a basis for the construction of multivariate statistical process control charts for a semi-autogenous grinding circuit on a gold plant. Comminution circuits are often operated in a quasi-steady state mode, where the mills tend to move rapidly from one state to another. This makes them difficult to monitor by conventional means designed for continuous steady state processes. As a first step, process data reflecting normal operating conditions are mapped with SammonÆs algorithm. Only one feature is extracted at a time and each mapping is captured by a neural network model to allow online application. Reverse neural network models are used to reconstruct the data prior to the extraction of subsequent features from the data residuals. The ensemble of neural network models can then be used for both fault detection and identification. The approach compared favourable with both linear and non-linear principal component models. It was able to detect two simulated fault conditions both with a reliability of 100 per cent, as opposed to 57.8 per cent and 95.2 per cent detected by an approach based on the use of linear principal component analysis and 84.1 per cent and 98.0 per cent detected by an approach based on non-linear principal components extracted with auto-associative neural networks.
