The West Coast of South Africa is well known for its placer gem quality diamond deposits and also associated with these hosts of Cenozoic unconsolidated marine and aeolian sand and gravel are significant concentrations of heavy minerals. Exploration for economic concentrations of zircon, ilmenite and rutile along the coast started in the mid-1980s. This resulted in the discovery of an inferred 1.6 billion tonne resource with a grade of ten per cent total heavy minerals (THM), which developed into the Namakwa Sands Mine, a world-class producer of heavy minerals. Several other resources, including satellite deposits proximal and distal to the mine area, extensive diamond mine dumps and present day beach placers, demonstrate the vast heavy mineral potential along the West Coast. The favourable gangue to economic mineral ratio, a higher zircon content compared to other similar deposits, relatively lower U+TH content of zircon, low slimes content and effectively pristine low chromium-manganese ilmenite of these deposits, render them attractive exploration targets. Negative factors that will affect conventional mineral beneficiation and liberation include secondary mineral coatings and the regional coastal development of several layers of superimposed duricrust. The economically attractive heavy mineral assemblage along the West Coast is the result of erosion of the proximal, gneissic Namaqualand Metamorphic Province and mature Table Mountain Group sandstone, concentration by marine and aeolian processes and preservation under arid climatological conditions over a period of more than 100 Ma.

The purpose of this paper is to outline the main points in the construction of the various types of wire ropes more commonly used for winding in Australia; and the maintenance of the ropes, and cage and skip safety gear as practised at the South mine, Broken Hill.It should be mentioned that both of the shafts at present in use are dry, and both downcast with or without the assistance of the two exhaust fans normally in use: Night shift and week.-end overtime are practicaly non-existent.Thus, during night shift, the cages in No. 7 shaft are landed on the chairs at the surface, providing efficient covers for the· shaft, and allowing the maximum amount of rope to be wound on to the drums. This also applies to the cages of both No. 7 and No. 4 shafts during the week-ends.These factors, combined with electric winding and skip haulage, are calculated to obtain the best use of the ropes when properly attended.WINDING ROPES-TYPE AND CONSTRUCTIONThese ropes may be divided into four main types which will include the more commonly used constructions(a) One-size strand.(b) Warrington strand.(c) Flattened strand.(d) Locked coil.1. The sharp deterioration in Au~tralia'S ternn of trade in recent years and the accumulating national debt highlight the need for a restructuring of the economy which is highly dependent upon primary agricultural and mineral commodity exports (figure 1). Table I gives an indication of the value that can be added to raw material by mineral processing. Significantly higher value is added through downstream manufacturing. In 1987, the mining and rural sectors accounted for 47010 and 38010 respectively of total exports valued at $35,782 million (figure 2). The export contribution from minerals comprised $12,266 mil- lion from unprocessed ores and concentrates and $4,668 million from metals and processed minerals including some simple manufactures. Coal accounted for 450/s of total primary mineral exports. Iron ore and alumina are other important mineral exports, while gold and aluminium are major metal exports. (Figure 3) Australia's minerals are now traded in a much more competi- tive and oversupplied market in contrast to the 1960's and 1970's period which was characterised by increasing exports of largely unprocessed ores and concentrates. During this period the emphasis on technology development was focussed on reducing costs through increased production effi- ciencies in order to maintain competitiveness.

Through partnering with mining customers, DYNO has been able to develop some specific technologies that benefit blasting operations particularly in underground mining. Some of these areas are: 1. Cost allocation and product tracking systems; 2. Borehole video surveys of breakthrough blastholes; 3. Borehole video photography for logging VRM blastholes; 4. Toe-load uphole loading for sublevel cave mining operations; 5. 3D blast modelling for underground ring blasting. This paper outlines these developments in the context of a Canadian underground metalliferous mine.

Pasminco has tested a Valmet ES1 ceramic disc vacuum filter at its Broken Hill concentrators. On lead and, particularly, zinc concentrates at the ZC Mine the filter performed well but on North Mine lead concentrate problems were experienced with deposition on the disc, which resisted both ultrasonic and acid cleaning. A preliminary financial analysis showed that the application of the filter at the ZC concentrator was worth pursuing. Accordingly an ES30 machine has been hired for plant evaluation.

Phu Bia Mining Ltd, a subsidiary of Pan Australian Resources Ltd owns and operates the Phu Kham copper concentrator located in the Xaysomboun District, Lao PeopleÆs Democratic Republic. Construction and commissioning of the 12 Mt/a copper concentrator and associated facilities was undertaken by Ausenco Ltd and handed over to Phu Bia Mining Ltd in April, 2008. The first copper concentrate was produced in April 2008 and the ship carrying the first shipment of copper concentrate set sail 27 July 2008. Nameplate mill throughput was reached in August, 2008 when 1 020 000 dmt of ore was treated in the milling and flotation circuit. The Cu-Au mineralisation is contained in skarn and stockwork mineralisation and is interpreted as a distal expression of a conventional porphyry copper-gold system. Copper mineralisation is principally in the form of chalcopyrite with lesser bornite. Gold occurs as small grains, typically associated with copper minerals. In the upper portions of the orebody, oxidation and water table movements have resulted in near surface leaching of the copper and below the leached zone, supergene enrichment resulted in chalcocite mineralisation. The circuit operates with a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) û ball mill circuit, feeding a bank of OK200 rougher cells. Rougher concentrate is reground in an IsaMill prior to entering a cleaner circuit consisting of three stages of cleaning and one stage of cleaner scavenging. The concentrate typically assaying 24 per cent Cu and 6 - 7 g/t Au is hauled for over 1000 km across the border to the Port of Sriracha in Thailand, and stocked in sheds at the wharf from which it is shipped to various Asian smelters. This paper discusses the successful commissioning and ramp up to design tonnage and metallurgical performance. In addition, a program to optimise both the comminution and flotation circuit is detailed with reference to grinding efficiency, flotation residence time and size by size mineral recovery.

The Nicolsons Find gold project is located 35 km southwest of Halls Creek in the east Kimberley. It was discovered in the late 1980s by John Nicolson and Stuart Skoglund, when high grade gold mineralisation within outcropping gossanous quartz reefs was found. The area has produced a modest 28 150 ounces of gold over two brief mining periods in 1996 and 2002 - 2003. Indicated and inferred resources as of September 2011 stand at 1 384 000 t at 5.58 g/t Au for 248 500 ounces of gold.The project is situated within the Halls Creek Orogen. Principal host units are metasediments and volcaniclastic sediments of the Koongie Park Formation. Minor mafic units are also recognised. Immediately east of these units, emplacement of the loadstone granite is believed to have provided the structural setting for the later gold mineralising event.Mineralisation is hosted within a broad, brittle-ductile arcuate shear zone about the western contact of the Loadstone granite. In the Nicolsons Find area, the shear zone strikes north-northeast and within the shear zone, gold is hosted in a series of narrow, quartz rich veins up to 200 m in strike length, plunging moderately to the north-northeast. To date, mineralisation has been drilled to a depth of 360 m below the surface. The veins are stepped or en-echelon in nature with low gold values towards the quartz vein limits where compression is inferred and higher grades present in the dilational body of the quartz veins. Gold is fine grained and can be present with or without associated sulfides. Sulfides are generally minor and consist mainly of arsenopyrite with traces of chalcopyrite, pyrite and sphalerite. Where present, sulfides are generally indicative of higher gold values.CITATION:Csar, M, 2012. Segregation of granular material is a very common phenomenon. Realised in a forced manner it is a basis of all separation processes in mineral processing, mainly classification and beneficiation. Spontaneous segregation, occurring under dynamic conditions and making possible mutual translocations of grains, is however an undesired phenomenon as a rule. It decreases the degree of blending of the material which in many cases is an important technological feature of the material. It should be noted that the segregation can be treated as the reverse phenomenon to blending. The importance and frequency of spontaneous segregation has caused many rules and technical solutions to be developed aimed at decreasing the possibility of the spontaneous segregation. However, not enough attention has been focused on an quantitative description of the phenomenon of segregation, either to ways of quantitatively evaluating segregation effects or to explanation of the influence of conditions under which the grained material exists on the occurrence of segregation and its degree. The paper presents the following topics: 1. new numerical indicator for evaluation of the segregation degree (and blending) of material contained in an arbitrary determined region is proposed; it is determined relative to the maximum possible degree of segregation of the given material when taking into account its individual properties; values of the indicator can be calculated effectively for an arbitrary material, also for ulticomponent material. 2. there is proposed a way of evaluating the state of segregation (or blending) of material in an arbitrary part of the region mentioned above, based on investigation of the gradient of distribution of the material features; algorithms of analytical procedures and calculations are presented for typical cases met in mineral processing; 3. results of initial experimental studies, both laboratory and industrial, concerning the effect of the chosen factors occurring in transport and storage of the material on its degree of segregation are presented; and 4. conclusions referring to the fundamental and practical significance of the results are also presented.

An investigation was made into the mineralogical characteristics of the upper portions of the 650 and 750 copper lodes. The investigation was based on a comprehensive suite of geological specimens representing all types of mineralization encountered during mining until the end of 1954 and the chief aims of the investigation were to determine (a) the minerals present and their textures and associations, (b) the paragenetic sequence of deposition of minerals in the orebodies, (c) significant changes, if any, which could be found in the orebodies with depth, and (d) the nature and mode of occurrence of nickel in the ore. The general structure of the orebodies is outlined and their mineral composition given. 10 textures exhibited by the ore minerals are described and a paragenetic sequence of events in the formation of the copper orebodies is outlined. No decrease in the complexity of the sulphide mineral textures with depth could be seen and no evidence was found to suggest that the tenor of the ore would decrease with depth although some factors which may eventually limit the extent of the orebodies are noted. The mode of occurrence of minor elements in the orebodies is described. Notes on the occurrence of pyrite, aikinite and berthierite in the orebodies is given and the orebodies are considered to be identified with LiIidgren's mesothermal type of sulphide ore deposit in which considerable replacement of older by younger generations of sulphide minerals occurred.INTRODUCTIONA mineragraphic study was made by Stillwell and Edwards (1945) of a suite of specimens submitted by Mount Isa Mines Limited from the Mount Isa Black Star copper orebodies with a view to determining 1. the nature, extent and association of arsenic, antimonyand bismuth minerals, 2. the mode of occurrence of silver and 3. whether galena and sphalerite occurred in minute forms and below the sizes readily observed in hand specimens.

The Collinsville Coal Measures consist mainly of arenaceous sediments but indude eleven named coal seams. The Formation outcrops around the northern end of tbe Bowen Basin where it attains a thickness of 700 ft. in the Collinsville-Scottville area and overlies Lower Bowen Volcanies with angular unconformity. Most of the members in the Formation thicken basinwards. The regional dip is about 8 degrees. The Formation thins southwards and does not occur south of the Bowen River on the eastern flank. On the western flank it is represented by 60 ft. of barren sandstone at the limit of our mapping, 12 miles south of the Bowen River. Two seams are mined, the Bowen and the Blake; coal from the former produces high grade metallurgical coke, and the latter seam is mined for steaming coal. Where mined, the seams are about 20 ft. thick. The coals are of medium volatile bituminous rank and the lower coals are of higher rank than those above them.Reverse faults striking across the Coal Measures have been delineated and the existence of areas of intrusive rocks has been established. Intrusions rose up fault planes and, as felspar porphyry sills, selectively intruded coal seams, decimating reserves of coalavailable for mining. One sill, in the Blake Seam, attains a known thickness of 115 ft. Because the distribution and thickness of the sills is rarely predictable, density of drilling has been greater than in most coalfields.INTRODUCTIONThe assemblage of sediments occupying the northern portion of the Bowen Basin (Fig. 1) may be divided into four formations of Permian age:The Upper Coal Measures (U. Bowen)The Middle Bowen Marine Beds (M. Bowen)The Collinsville Coal Measures (M. Bowen)The Lower Bowen Volcanics (L. Bowen).Of these, the Upper Coal Measures and the Collinsville Coal Measures are known to contain coal seams of workable thickness.

Airblast overpressure legislative limits can be extremely difficult to meet throughout Australia, which has by far the most stringent limits of any nation in the world. As the difficulty in meeting the limits is strongly dependent on the scale of mining, it is not surprising that the Australian coal mining industry is experiencing particular difficulties in meeting these limits. Eight full scale overburden blasts have been modelled with respect to overpressure impact for a strip coal mine, involving both dragline (cast) blasting and pre-strip (non-cast) blasting. Overpressure levels in the range 100 to 125 dBL have been measured at distances varying from 2.4 to 5.7 km, and modelling has successfully estimated both the amplitude and shape of overpressure waveforms to within an average of 1.2 dBL. Typical errors of prediction are around 0.6 dBL. This accuracy of prediction has been achieved by considering the impact of only the face holes, and the accuracy of prediction of both shape and amplitude suggests that it is these holes which dominate the environmental overpressure impact at distances in the range two to six kilometres, for cast and pre-strip blasting operations. Modelling has been based upon the Elemental Overpressure Wavelet proposed by Richards and Moore (2002), incorporating actual hole coordinates, actual delay timing, and assumed delay scatter statistics. The incorporation of delay scatter statistics has been particularly significant, and allows the determination of the range over which the peak overpressure levels are expected to vary. To date, modelling has considered only the use of conventional pyrotechnic delays, though simple adjustment to the scatter definition would allow estimation of overpressure levels, and their variability, with electronic delays.

A significant resource of uranium has been discovered within a buried palaeochannel located in the south western corner of the Officer Basin of Western Australia by PNC Exploration (Australia) Pty. Ltd. The mineral- isation is redox controlled and is hosted by Eocene organic rich paludal sediments. Prob- able insitu reserves are 13,000 t of contained uranium with an average ore grade of 0.12% at a cutoff grade of 0.03% U. The Mulga Rock palaeochannel has been traced for at least 100 km beneath the Quaternary surficial cover. The main channel is horseshoe shaped with the channel arms vary- ing from 5 to 15 km in width. The western arm connects to the Lake Raeside-Ponton Creek drainage system, whilst the eastern arm'is open to the south. The headwaters of the palaeo- channel are thought to have been the Lake Minigwal drainage system, prior to its capture by the Lake Rason system. Differential.erosion of the basement rocks during the Late Cretac- eous to Early Tertiary strongly influenced channel shape and resulted in the main channel being confined to a Permian,mudstone filled valley. Upwards of 100 m of fluviatile sediments accumulated within the palaeovalley during a period of subsidence in the Early Tertiary. Three broad stratigraphic units have been re- cognised within the channel: 1. An upper unit of fluviatile sands with interbedded lacustrine sediments, which have subsequently been wholly oxidised and variably silicified and ferruginised. 2. A middle unit of lacustrine to paludal sediments, which host the main mineral- isation. 3. A basal unit of fluviatile gravels and sand. The presence of excellently preserved Nothofagidites in organic rich paludal sediments from the middle unit, suggest that unit was laid down in a non-marine, fluviatile, humid environ- ment during the Middle Eocene.

ALTHOUGH discovered as long ago as 1817, by Strohmeyer, the use of cadmium did not become in anyway general for nearly a century. Its properties, although well known, did not recommend it to users of metals generally, and it was, on the whole, regarded more in the light of a nuisance to zinc producers than anything else. Its real value was not appreciated until both the United States of America and Germany, who are entirely dependent on outside sources for their supplies of tin, were faced with the unpleasant fact that their tin stocks were being rapidly depleted, with practically no prospect of having them replenished. This resulted in serious efforts being made in the UnIted States of America to conserve what tin was available, and, as a consequence, several metals were tried in the hope that they would prove satisfactory substitutes for tin. Among these was cadmium, and it was found that cadmium could replace tin in a manner sufficiently satisfactory to permit of its use in many directions where tin had been used before.It is on this ability of cadmium to replace tin that its use became in any way general at first; but since then new avenues of development have been opened up in which its physical and chemical properties are proving their value. It is highly probable that its use will extend very considerably as time goes on. OCCURRENCE OF CADMIUM.There are several cadmium minerals known, but none of them occur in profitable quantities as ores. The cadmium of commerce is derived almost entirely from zinc minerals and ores in which it is almost invariably present in proportions which are usually very small. Cadmium behaves metallurgically almost the same as zinc, and hence constitutes a fraction of 1% of almost all spelter.

Technical measurements are an integral part of research and development of new technical devices. Now they are also an integral part of production too, especially as a part of quality control systems. More new problems started with they applications up, like storing and following preservation of big data files. Many problems are also with processing of the measurement results, especially to be up to standards of ISO 9000 normative. It includes basic data about the measurement (structured data) and measurement outputs (huge data streams). Using database systems looks as good idea, because of structured measurement data and they processing. They were developed more concepts of database measurement system support during the research project MSM 272300012. It was decided to develop specialised measurement systems, on the base of experiments and experiences with they use in operating conditions. It proved to be wrong to develop general system, because of compound operating and long response of the system. And it is not possible to use these systems for mass production systems. The problem of data storing is not as easy to be answered, because of dependence on used technical devices. During realisation the measurement system for gearbox noise measurement are data stored to the database, because used analyser system PULSE (Brnel and Kjµr Co) is open structure and can cooperate with other software systems. Anyhow the data streams are not longer (after compression) than the Memo data type, in practical use increases the data file too fast (about hundreds MB daily). Therefore we must include a special supervisory system for administration and creating data files to the system. Nevertheless the used system MS-Access supports data files up to 1 GB, for practical application is better if the file size do not exceed the capacity of CD-ROM disc.

The amount of copper production by flash smelting process occupies about 17% (equivalent to 1.4 million t/year) of total free world production. In Japan, 650,000 tons of copper is produced annually by flash smelting. This is 65% of the gross copper production of Japan. To reinforce pollution control, promote energy saving, and enhance production efficiency by increasing the size of furnaces, conventional blast furnaces and reverberatory furnaces are being replaced with the flash smelters worldwide. The Ashio Smelter started copper production in 1884 and developed in association with the Ashio mine. In those days, the Ashio smelter produced copper by using the blast furnace process designed for the high-grade ore from the copper mine. At that time, this process was specialized in Japan. In 1956, for the first time in Japan, the Ashio Smelter introduced the flash smelting process developed by Outokumpu Oy of Finland (it is suitable for treating the copper concentrate, producing sulfuric acid and improving production efficiency). The flash furnace in Ashio, the first ever in Japan, had a capacity of 230 t/day for copper concentrate and was operated up to 1962. During this period, various operational troubles were solved, and further improvements were made; and, in 1962, a Furukawa-type flash smelting furnace was completed in Ashio. This improved version of a flash furnace had a capacity of 450 t/day. There was one flash furnace and one waste heat boiler, which were arranged in a unique pattern for that time. This furnace may be said to be the prototype of the present flash smelting process in the world.

Solid Energy New Zealand Limited (æSolid EnergyÆ) is a state-owned coal mining company, producing 4.0 Mtpa from a number of opencast and underground mines in the Huntly, West Coast and Southland regions in New Zealand. The company currently exports 2.1 Mtpa of coking coal. Exports are expected to grow strongly over the next five year as the company expands production into new semi-soft and thermal coal reserves. Domestic coal demand is also expected to grow strongly, particularly in the North Island, as the Maui gas field reserves diminish, and thermal coal becomes more important for electricity generation and meeting the energy needs of forest processing and other industries. Solid Energy is expanding and developing its risk management practices across all areas of the business: strategic planning û extensive use of scenario analysis and probabilistic modelling over a 20 year period; investment decisions û development and application of a rigorous six stage æProject Assessment GuidelineÆ process for all new mine developments; geological and geotechnical risk assessment techniques û use of best practice techniques including seismic surveys; financial risk management û a dynamic approach to hedging based on effects based analysis of Cash Flow at Risk analysis against preset risk tolerances; risk financing û the use of a captive insurance subsidiary, and the experiences of a small coal company seeking to obtain insurance cover on a æhardÆ international insurance market; and integrated risk management û the challenges of trying to implement a broad integrated risk management approach across the company, that supports implementation of strategic objectives as well as meeting æcompliance or legislative basedÆ risk management requirements.

The ore mined from the Lead Lode of The Zinc Corporation leases consists of a fairly granular mixture of galena, marmatite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and lollingite with a gangue association of calcite, quartz, bustamite, rhodonite, mangan-hedenbergite, garnet, fluorite, mangano-calcite and apatite. The silver content of the ore occurs in three minerals tetrahedrite, dyscrasite, and pyrargyrite, the last two mentioned occurring in microscopic association only. Other metallic and gangue minerals are also present in this complex mineralogical association, but do not influence the milling operations.Fortunately, the silver minerals favour the galena and chalcopyrite as their host minerals, thus facilitating the recovery of both copper and silver in the lead concentrate. The ore from the Lead Lode assays from 14 - 18 per cent lead; 3.0 - 4.5 oz silver per tonne, and 9.5 - 12.0 per cent zinc.A parallel lode, known as the Zinc Lode, is well developed in The Zinc Corporation leases. This lode assays from six to eight per cent lead, 1.5 oz silver per ton, 18 - 25 per cent zinc with a siliceous gangue. The common Lead Lode gangue minerals, calcite, rhodonite, bustamite - are very rare in present underground exposures. No metallurgical work was done on this ore during the pilot plant operations.The aim in the milling process is to produce:1. A lead concentrate with the maximum economic recovery of lead, silver, gold, copper and antimony, and minimum zinc content.2. A zinc concentrate with the maximum economic recovery of zinc, cadmium, and cobalt, and minimum iron, arsenic and fluorine content.3. A waste residue containing sufftcient granular material to be utilised as underground fill.In considering the economics of the milling practice the above three requirements plus consideration of the tariffs submitted by the purchasers of concentrates were the deciding factors in the evolution of the present milling practice.Towards the end of 1924 The Zinc Corporation Limited added to and adapted the old zinc tailings plant for the treatment of 5000 tons of crude ore per week. This plant, which operated until January 1936, was in general principles similar to the standard Broken Hill methods of ore concentration, whereby the galena was recovered by the gravity concentration methods of jigging and tabling with selective flotation concentration of the residual galena and marmatite. One important difference from other Broken Hill plants was that the primary grinding of the jig tailing was performed with flint-loaded mills operating in closed circuit with revolving screens. Two primary grinding sections were installed, each consisting of two 5 ft diameter by 10ft long tube mills loaded with flint pebbles working in closed circuit with four 3 ft diameter by 3 ft wide revolving screens covered with 22mesh Toncap woven wire screen with 0.57 mm opening. Each section carried a circulating load of 28.3 tons per hour for a jig.

This article presents an overview of the experimental phase equilibria studies of S-containing systems (Ni-Sn-S, Cu-Sb-S, and Cu-Sn-S) and As-containing systems (Fe-Sb-As and Fe-Sn-As). These systems improve the prediction capabilities of FactSage in a 20-component ‘Cu2O’-PbO-ZnOFeO- Fe2O3-CaO-SiO2-S-(Al2O3-MgO-CrO-Cr2O3-Na2O)-(As, Sn, Sb, Bi, Ag, Au, Ni, Co) system for complex pyrometallurgical operations during both refining and recycling. Experiments involved equilibration at predetermined temperatures (300–1200°C) with or without preheating, followed by rapid quenching in a brine. Quenched samples were then directly measured using an electron probe microanalyser. For the Ni-Sn-S system, liquid phases (NiS- and SnS-rich mattes and liquid metal) and solid phases (Ni1+xSn, SnS, Ni3Sn, FCC-Ni, Ni1-xS, NiS2, Ni3Sn4, SnS2, Sn2S3 and β-Ni3S2) were observed. A new Ni3Sn2S2 phase was found to melt incongruently. For the Cu-Sb-S system, liquid metal, matte, FCC-Cu, digenite, Sb, CuSbS2, Cu3SbS3 and Cu3SbS4 phases were observed. For the Cu-Sn-S system, liquid metal, matte, digenite, SnS and Cu3Sn phases were found at liquidus.

Operation of a pilot heavy medium separation plant allows flexibility of operation not normally possible in an operating plant. Much useful data can be obtained, although some limitations apply. Projects carried out at AMDEL have included HMC separations at 1.5 to 3.6 specific gravity, comparative operation of HMC and DWP separators and the use of fine feed and product screens. Investigations of this type have provided a considerable amount of information on HMS plant performance and characteristics under a wide range of operating conditions.
