The Mount Lyell Company treats some 2.3 million tonnes of ore annually, mined from a number of orebodies on the field. Blended ore is essentially a quartz-sericite schist containing about eight per cent of pyrite and three per cent of chalcopyrite. Four-stage crushing and two-stage ball milling are followe by selective flotation for copper. Pyrite is recovered from the coarse fraction of dopper circuit tailings. A detailed survey involving examination. of 82 samples provided information on the size- by-size behaviour of the principal ore constituents throughout the grinding, copper flotation and pyrite flotation sections of the circuit. Results for the copper and pyrite flotation sections are presented in the paper, and it is shown that over half the copper reporting to the final tailing (5% of copper in the feed) is plus 100 microns and that the major pyrite loss is in the desliming cyclone overflow. These data proVide a basis for assessing potential methods of circuit optimisation.

The dissolution of gold from various ore-bodies is discussed in terms of extraction rates and reagent consumptions during leaching. Gold dissolves slowly in cyanide but reagent consumptions are usually satisfactory. In almost all cases where excessive cyanide consumptions occur, similar high consumptions result with other lixiviants. Recovery of gold from cyanide solution is well established and comparatively simple technology.Gold dissolution in thiourea is faster than cyanide but significant consumptions of thiourea, due to both adsorption and oxidation, occur. Gold recovery from thiourea solutions is likely to be more difficult than from cyanide.Chlorination of gold is very fast in acidic conditions but excessive consumption of chlorine occurs for ores containing greater than 0.5% S. Reprecipitation of gold and handling of acidic chlorine solutions are both significant problems. The mechanism of gold reduction onto activated carbon creates difficulties in the carbon in pulp process for recovery of gold but means a simplification in the production of bullion from loaded carbon.

Sheet flotation is a new two dimensional column flotation cell that produces continuous spectrum of products. Analogous to a shaking table in its performance and analysis, sheet flotation is a sheet of bubbles rising through packing contained between two walls. Feed enters the sheet at the lower left and the product exit along the top and right edges. Iligh grade materials exit at the top left, middlings exit at the top right comer and low grade waste materials exit at the bottom right. As in the case of a shaking table, two motions are required: up and right. Bubbles furnish the upwards movement for hydrophobic particles, slanted packing the rightward movement for hydrophilic particles. The sheet flotation cells is analysed as a 40 x 40 array of simple cells. In practice, 1000 x 1000 arrays of simple cells may be expected. With larger arrays, excellent separations may be expected. The current drill-and-blast method of tunnelling is cyclic and, for this reason above all others, has a future application potential which is lower than that of continuous methods. There is scope for progress in several facets of today's drill-and-blast tunnelling. But even if each of its unit operations and the synthesis of these were to be optimised, this conventional method will, in the long term, fail to be a serious competitor for tunnelboring machines (TBMs), roadheaders and the like. If its role in tunnelling is not to decline at an increasing rate, drill-and-blast will need to be transformed into a continuous system. Boring and cutting machines consume considerable energy (and expenditure) in creating rock fragments which are smaller than those required by muck-handling equipment. In this respect, blasting is more efficient. Mechanical methods are also less versatile and flexible and, when planning proceeds on a basis of meagre or inadequate geological data, cannot be costed as accurately. Currently, research gains for TBMs and roadheaders are greater than those for conventional tunnelling. If (as is likely) the disadvantages of mechanical methods continue to be reduced at a greater rate, the swing away from drilling and blasting will gain momentum.

Due primarily to the publication of the Fitzgerald Report the impact of taxation on the mining industry and the amount of taxes actual- ly paid by the industry have become items of intense debate. However, the discussion has been governed more by impassioned rhetoric than considered logic. It is equally as wasteful to the economy for the mining industry as a low cost efficient export earner to be punitively taxed, as it is for the industry to be given excessive taxation assistance. A comparison of the effect of five tax- ation policies on the cash flow of a capital intensive mining project is presented. The policies considered are Liberal 1969, Liberal 1976 with and without the coal levy, Labor 1975 and Labor 1976. The mining project used in the analysis is modelled on published estimates for the proposed Nebo coal project. The analysis is equally applicable to any large mining or petroleum development.

INTRODUCTION The use of activated charcoal to recover gold from alkaline cyanide leach liquors is the most rapidly expanding technology in hydrometallurgy today. The process, known as carbon-in-pulp (CIP), has replaced countercurrent decantation as the method for recovering gold by cyanidation. Carbon-in-pulp entails mixing activated charcoal with a ground ore-water slurry containing gold cyanide, allowing the charcoal to adsorb the gold, and then mechanically removing the gold loaded charcoal from the pulp. The pulp is sent to tailing disposal and the loaded charcoal is sent for gold bullion production. Activated charcoal's affinity for gold has been docu- mented for over one hundred years. An analytical technique is described to identify areas of structural disturbance to coal and interseam strata in coal measures. It is based on exploration borehole data which records seam intersections and interseam lithologies. Computerised data bases have been developed to allow processing of large quantities of borehole records. The case study discussed is located in a tectonic setting dominated by thrust faulting. It provides a mechanism for the identification of low angle and bedding plane faults. In addition it allows the preparation of plans showing the areal distribution of the thrust sheets in the statigraphic section throughout the mine prospect. The technique requires the identification of normal undisturbed depositional thickness of coal seams and interseams to be determined. This is done for coal by the identification of coal ply distribution over the area. For interseam lithologies it is based on sedimentological modelling of lithology distributions, related back to the original depositional environments. Variations from the expected values are interpreted as structural Deformations.

To obtain the best economic results in treating the comparatively high-grade ore of the Kalgurli Mine a good roast is essential, and the effort of this paper will be to briefly describe the plant and the conditions prevailing in roasting, which, on an output of about 360 tons daily, subsequently enable an average extraction of slightly over 94% of the gold to be maintained.The percentage of sulphur in the ore varies between 2'5 and 3'5, the lower figure existing when treating oxidized ore. The average gold value is 13 dwt; this occurs chiefly as sylvanite, containing .a lower percentage of silver than is usually present in that mineral. One ore body in the mine contains hessite (Ag2Te) in considerable quantity, associated with gold telluride, and when ore from this stope is being treated the silver contents rise to as high as 20 dwt, but the usual amount is about 9 dwt. per ton, of which only a small proportion is extracted. Other metallic minerals, in addition to pyrite, occurring more or less commonly, are arsenopyrite, magnetite, chalcopyrite, and the tellurides calaverite (AuTez)and coloradoite HgzTe3). A small proportion only of the value occurs as free gold.

Martite-goethite high-grade iron ore deposits that show no trace of hydrothermal alteration may extend to more than 200 m below the permanent water table and are typically saprolite with evidence of exposure to the physical, chemical and biogenic processes of soil formation restricted to the low-grade goethitised upper levels. Typically no evidence of the prior presence of chert bands is discernable within the ore yet it has been assumed that these ore deposits derive from cherty banded iron formation (BIF) through supergene leaching of the chert bands and thus classified as supergene iron ore deposits. The fact that chert bands are absent and that these ore deposits are highly weathered does not prove supergene leaching of the chert bands. Quartz is one of the most resistant minerals to chemical weathering within the saprolite and large scale dissolution of quartz is absent from all other quartz-bearing saprolites, yet this unlikely process is accepted without question as the origin of the most abundant form of high-grade iron ore deposits. It is proposed that martite-goethite high-grade iron ore deposits formed only from BIF in which chert bands were absent prior to weathering. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. This paper describes the characteristics of blasting which set it apart from other methods of breaking rock. The mechanism of rock breakage and the influence of rock proper- ties are then discussed. The strain and fragmentation produced by a cylindrical charge does not change once the charge is longer than 16 blasthole diameters. The influence of bench geometry, charge length and drill diameter are then examined. It is shown that spherical charges have advantages over long slender cylindrical charges. By selection of the appropriate drill diameter, explosive and charge configuration the optimum blasting practice for a given rock to give suitable fragmentation and muckpile profile for sub- sequent handling can be found. The fragmentat- ion depends not only on rock and explosive properties but also on the pattern which dictates how effectively the cracking is utilised. The size distribution of the fragments is given by the Rosin - Rammler equation. Undesirable cracking of the rock in the final wall can be controlled by the careful design of blasts as they approach the final wall. Finally, it is concluded that because of the distance to which blasting can fracture and then displace rock it is suited for the breakage of large volumes of rock.

FINANCE FOR EXPLORATION Two factors have basic importance in relation to the availability of finance: the apparent success of continuing exploration activity and tax concessions. It is not proposed to discuss the effect of existing tax incentives, as these have already been outlined and are generally accepted as being reasonably attractive; certainly not a deterrent to possible investors. However, it is obvious that the greater the tax incentives, the greater the amount of money that will be attracted, and the wider the number of people who can be brought into the pool. If, as is suggested, the chance of discovery is related to expenditure and effort, then the more money attracted, the better the prospects of significant finds. It is probably correct to assume that the largest expenditure in mining will come from, or be induced by, people expert in the field, people who are fully aware of the risks and benefits and perhaps making conservative decisions because of this awareness. Insofar as the general public is concerned, while in the first burst of enthusiasm it will frequently follow any promoter, in the long run it too will become more sophisticated and will strongly support only those promoters and companies of good repute and proven record.

Before any accident prevention and total safety programme can succeed, a safety concientiousness or attitude needs to be implanted in the employees' minds. Psycholog- ical and physiological conditions play a vital role in accident causation and prevention. Both need attention in a good safety programme, but working place conditions and environment are more easily corrected. However, the challenge is to change attitudes in the minds of men - psychological factors in accidents. To do this does not require a Safety Officer, but does require a Safety Adviser. At Blackwater mine a Safety Adviser is available to all sections of the organisation to guide and assist, to provide data and material to use at meetings, to help in accident investi- gations and to help organise training. To eventually achieve total commitment requires every member of the management team to be a salesman towards all around selling an attitude to safe working, a way of life. At Blackwater mine the workforce is young overall with most employees being under 40 years old. Psychologically this is a quite different problem to a balanced ages working group. A great deal of effort is needed to communicate with the younger, articulate, better educated employee who is also generally a skilled operator in the capital intensive

A general approach to the analysis of processing technology is presented using the concepts of Process Aims, Process Characteris- tics and Process Costs. From an examination of the processes used in extractive metallurgy a hierarchy of process aims is identified, these aims are separation, compound formation,, metal production and metal purification. The application of this methodology to process flowsheet development is described.

The grade (or value) to volume relationship which constitutes a target orebody is used to show that the concentration of diamonds in an economic deposit may be as low as O.Olg/t. Diamond valuations from an Indonesian deposit demonstrate that the largest 5% of the diamonds in the deposit contributed 25% of the mass of diamonds recovered and 70% of the value from the ore. The need to consider the large stone content and the probability of recovery is used to estimate that the sampling density is required to be as high as 4-10,000ppm for a VLC deposit. This is compared with an acceptable sampling density for a bauxite deposit of 700ppb. A case history of the discovery of a diamond bearing paleo-channel in the Ellendale field in Western Australia illustrates that the sampling task becomes impractical. It requires an excavation in excess of 300,000 bcm of material to prove a 5M hem ore reserve. The conclusion is reached that setting up a small scale mining operation is an appropriate method of proving such an ore reserve and that the Code of Reporting should allow a category of "Mineable Resource" to cover such a situation.

A 'research model' can be used to investigate cause and effect relations and generally improve the understanding of extractive metallurgical processes. As such, it is a useful research technique which complements the traditional methods of laboratory and plant measurement. The procedure of model development is iterative and involves observation of the process, hypothesis of phenomena, prediction using mathematical descriptions of the phenomena and comparison of predictions with real-world measurements. Lack of agreement of predictions with real-world measurements usually indicates an inadequacy in the hypotheses and necessitates revision. Experimentation has an integral role in the process of model development but its emphasis is different from that when experimentation alone is used to study processes. Since a process as a whole is investigated by using a model, experimentation is restricted to the study of specific phenomena to aid the description of these in the model, to the characterisation of the raw materials (for initial values of the model parameters) and to the measurement of physical and chemical constants required in the model equations. Similarly, plant measurements are made for the purpose of comparison with the model predictions not to establish cause and effect relations. This makes plant experimentation much simpler and cheaper'since most measurements-can be taken during normal operation.

Exploration risk increases with time, due to a general decrease in prospectivity as the more accessible deposits are found, and be- cause of rising costs and demands due to an improving standard of living. Risk is separated into financial risk, which increases sharply at the development stage, and the risk of failure which is at its peak at the outset of exploration. Risk is also divided into internal and external factors; some of the latter cannot be offset, viz. the systematic overall risk for any enterprise. The recently emergent risk embodied in withdrawal of large areas from exploration access is discussed. An appeal is made for objective multiple land-use policies to be applied so that land remains available at reasonable cost and with appropriate environ- mental safeguard conditions. Risks specific to gold exploration are discussed. As gold now accounts for over 50% of all mineral exploration, and most other metals are depressed, any sharp decline in gold will have grave effects on the ex- ploration industry. Gold exploration will become more difficult and expensive in about five years, after most of the readily accessible deposits in Australia are found. Government's role is important in pro- viding stability and basic data at reasonable cost. Exploration for specific minerals or of particular areas could be stimulated by extending the 150%.tax deductibility of R & D to aspects of exploration of strategic im- portance, particularly in the event of a downturn. Exploration is classic scientific research, at least through to the proving Stages.

The optimization of management structure systems for coal mines is undertaken with the use of economic and mathematical models of the monitoring, manufacturing, and functional subdivisions of the systems. The main para- meter to be minimized is economic loss result ing from organization faults and this is achieved, in part, by optimum distribution of both technological objects and engineering and technical personnel. Models used are of the "gated" type, parameters for which are derived from analysis of manufacturing processes and from automatic information systems. The use of these models ofmanagement structures is only part of the process of optimization of those structures for coal mining operations.

This paper outlines a range of strategies for steady state optimisation of most types of concentrators. Optimisation is considered in terms of comminution performance, energy efficiency, concentrator strategy and overall mine/concentrator operating philosophies. Application becomes more complex as the range of optimisation is expanded. However, the potential gains also increase. A step by step framework for data collection and analysis is provided. This process is facilitated by powerful simulation and mass balancing programs which are now in common use. Once a sound, steady state rationale for optimisation has been developed, it may be used to provide a fine foundation for process control system development.

The paper presents two methods for periodical identification of the dependence between haulage speed and loading torque of the shearer for periodical corrections of control algorithms. These algorithms are useful for working with small microprocessor-based systems. The paper is concluded with results of identification using above methodsand with discussion about their merits and demerits. The longwall mining system is the basic exploita-tion system used in coal mining in Poland. The quantity of coal produced by this system, using a shearer loader as a cutter-loader machine is esti-mated at 170 million tones per year. For this rea-son scientific research concerning these machines is of major practical significance.
