The results of calibration trials conducted on parachute stoppings under a recently completed NERD&DC grant are presented. Applications of parachute stoppings, for rapid regulation and control of ventilation networks are described including use in mine recoveries, sealing sections and rescue work. Parachute stoppings are one of a series of non-rigid ventilation control structures specifically designed for quick installation in emergency situations, for use in high production/rapid advance areas and areas suffering roof-floor convergence.

THE treatment by chlorination of the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company's ores was first accomplished, early in 1886, by a works having a capacity of 25,000 tons per annum. Shortly afterwards another works was established, capable of dealing with 50,000 tons per annum. The extraction of gold was originally successful and satisfactory, but running expenses were high, averaging £2 19s. 6d. per ton of ore treated. These works were believed to be the largest chlorination plants in the world at that time. As might have been expected, the mechanical details and chemical process had not been perfected, and, moreover, both works were hurriedly built, and operating expenses were not then considered of such prime importance, as the ore at that time was of very high grade; the large quantities of low grade ore since dealt with not being then considered, since the bulk of it was not even known to be in existence. These two works consisted of rock-breakers, high speed rolls, screens, elevators, &c., for crushing; a large number of small handrabbled reverberatory furnaces for roasting; one-ton chlorination barrels and three-ton leaching vats for chlorination. The transport of ore from crusher to furnaces, from furnaces to chlorination barrels, and the emptying of leaching vats was effected entirely by hand labour. The engineering geological mapping of Metropolitan Area of Jopo Pessoa in the littoral zone of the Parafba State, northeast of Brazil, made possible the ambient characterisation for space using and its implications on the environmental resources. This region comes lately denoting an accented industrial growth and this work would help future projects of urban planning, distinguished by quick ground occupations for residential, industrial installations, farming, beyond mineral extractions. The mineral sector supplies material and substance demanded by industry and civil constructions, like as clay deposits, sands, calcareous rocks and mineral water. Many companies working there do not have the permission or inspection of ambient agencies for planned extractions of mineral resources. The consequences of this activity pass for the low profit of the reserves, bad uses of the sources, ground degradation, vegetation suppressions and physical impacts on landscapes, beyond noises and vibrations. These activities have causing accelerated alterations and transformations in the environment, compromising the sustainable development. It thus becomes clear that urgent solutions must be find to solve the problems with human interferences by closer inspection and management for disciplined use of its natural resources.

As part of the construction of the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop it was necessary to construct two 7 metre diameter tunnels, each 100 metres in length, by shield driven excavation through an alluvial valley at Elizabeth Street. The tunnels had a primary support of bolted precast reinforced concrete liner blocks and were excavated with the aid of compressed air. The work was undertaken by the Tunnelling Group of the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works as nominated sub-contractor to John Holland (Constructions) Pty. Ltd. Roof falls and failures of powered supports were major threats at longwall face. Abnormal geological conditions were caused roof falls and shield damage. Therefore continuous monitoring and analysis of strata behaviour was imperative on real time for forecasting adverse behaviour. Novel PXI instrumentation system was successfully developed for continuous monitoring and analysis of supports pressure, leg closure and gate roads convergence. However, this paper briefly examines the novel gate roads convergence monitoring system with field applications.

During 2003, different plastic stemming plugs (Cats«, Stemtite«, and Taponex«) were tested in EscondidaÆs Mina Sur, to determine the effect on gas retention time when used in conjunction with drill cuttings in production shots with a blasthole diameter of 10 5/8ö. Longer retention times were expected to provide greater fragmentation and muckpile looseness. In order to determine which plug showed the greatest enhancement of stemming retention, 17 trials were carried out û in the first seven tests, only the Cats were used, in the following five tests, a combination of Cats, Taponex and Stemtite were used, and in the last three tests, only the Taponex plug was used. In the last two blasts, drill cuttings were used without stemming plugs as a benchmarking exercise. Blasts were filmed with a high-speed camera, which could record the detonation times of holes using rolls of shock tube tied to stakes at the hole collars, to act as flash indicators. The camera allowed measurement of the time between charge detonation and the commencement of stemming ejection. In order to obtain the statistical parameters of each one of the stemming plugs used in the 17 trials carried out, the Minitab software was used and a data base was created for it, corresponding to each stemming configuration with the retention time obtained from the filming. Once it was determined which stemming plug provided the greatest enhancement of stemming retention, the impact on the fragmentation was analysed using the WipFrag image analysis software to estimate the muckpile size distribution.

A research programme sponsored through the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association investigated two aspects of mine aerodynamics on model scale. These were aero- dynamic losses in (a) shaft/airway intersections and (b) losses created by mine cages moving in a combined haulage/ventilation shaft. The shaft/airway intersections studied included base and intermediate levels for both upcast and downcast. shafts, with one to four rectangular airways intersecting a circular shaft. Changes in intersection geometry were limited to the installation of 45¦ conical brow cutoffs of varying size and the addition of simple flow control devices. The relative air- flows between the airways and the downstream shaft were varied over a range employed in Australian mining practice. In general, experiments revealed that a small brow cutoff was significantly better than none at all, and a simple device such as a cone can reduce losses and improve flow stability at an intersection. The mine cage studies determined the effect on aerodynamic loss of cage area blockage, height/length ratio, openings in cage walls and surface roughness due to external structural members. Regional synergies concern the capture, recovery and reuse of by-products, water and energy between industrial operations in close proximity. The Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing (CSRP) undertakes applied research to further advance regional synergies in the Kwinana Industrial Area in Western Australia in order to achieve greater efficiencies in water, energy and materials consumption and reduction in waste and emission generation. The Kwinana Industries Council (KIC) and its member organisations recognise water consumption and disposal as key environmental issues. Some 30 companies in Kwinana consume a total of more than 35 000 ML/yr of fresh water. Over the past years significant progress has been made towards the reduction of water consumption and improvements in effluent disposal. As part of the CSRP Kwinana Synergies Project, water balances for the ten major water consuming companies have been completed, including workshop sessions with company staff on water synergy opportunities. This work resulted in a set of synergy opportunities which are currently being pursued. In parallel to the Kwinana project, the CSRP has commissioned a supporting project that delivers a toolkit to guide a more targeted and less resource intensive way to identify feasible water synergy opportunities. One of these tools focuses specifically on water, and takes count of input and output water flows within a given industrial area to deliver listings of prioritised water synergy opportunities. This paper discusses the water mapping and workshop approach taken in Kwinana and its outcomes, which are to identify and evaluate water synergy opportunities. The results from the trial application of the developed Regional Eco-Efficiency Opportunity Assessment Toolkit are also presented.

The kinetics of cementation of silver chloro-complexes from sodium chloride solutions onto copper and zinc was studied using rotating disc electrode system. The activation energies were found to be 10.8 and 30.5 k7/mole, in a 3M NaCl solution on copper and zinc discs, respectively. Higher dissolution factors were obtained on zinc disc, due to hydrogen evolution, whereas, copper dissolved close to the predicted values. Scanning electron microscope studies were conducted both on copper and zinc- cdiscs-to evaluate the deposit morphology and its effect on reaction kinetics. Two stage deposit growth was observed both on copper and zinc discs. Smooth, coherent initial deposit followed by tree-like secondary dendrites formed on copper, whereas, scattered bulbous initial deposit followed by porous dendrites was typical on zinc disc.

Laboratory investigations have been carried out on direct leaching of lead-zinc complex sulphide ore and zinc concentrate using ferric chloride. From the investigation it was observed that the use of 0.15 M and 2 M FeC13 gave an optimum dissolution of metal ions from ore and concentrate respectively. The kinetic studies conducted showed that the leaching reaction followed a shrinking core model for galena and sphalerite. The presence of impurities such as pyrite had increased the dissolution rate and reduced the consumption of ferric chloride. Further, the studies were conducted to recover dissolved zinc from the chloride solution by selectively precipitating it as zinc ammonium chloride.

Selective open pit mining for gold has been in progress at Harbour Lights since the onset of mining in March 1985. Selective mining techniques used are similar to those in other recently opened gold mines in Western Australia. However certain practices have been introduced to accommodate the irregular distribution of mineralisation and comparatively high mill tonnage throughput. These include selective mining with large bucket excavators, sequential waste stripping - ore mining normal to the strike of the orebody and sample line preparation and ripping on bench floors. Application of these selective mining practices at Harbour Lights enables the operation to maintain delivery of approximately forty by 50-tonne truck loads of ore to the mill crusher everyday, with limited rehandling of material through ore stockpiles.

The use of long-hole in-seam drilling techniques for seam gas drainage ahead of mining was introduced to the Australian coal industry by ACIRL in mid-1981. ACIRL's research program has involved the development and demonstration of drilling and borehole survey technology in addition to evaluating the gas drainage potential of long-hole in- seam boreholes. This paper presents the results of the long-hole drilling carried out to date in the Illawarra District of the New South Wales coal fields. Drilling experience in relation to both vertical and horizontal directional control of the drill string, drill performance and borehole survey techniques are discussed. In addition, results of gas drainage effected by the long boreholes are presented. Future potential and requirements for further development of this technology are Reviewed.

In recent years there has been a great deal of interest in ways to optimise the performance of mineral processing plants. This paper describes a methodology developed for optimisation of autogenous and semiautogenous mills. The methodology involves plant sampling, batch testing, modelling, computer simulation, control strategy evaluation and implementation. The models have been tested in plant operations to verify the research findings and predictions. Two example applications of this approach to plant optimisation are presented. Benefits reported in these two examples are in the range of four - eight per cent increase in size reduction efficiency.

Theories on the origin of the Itabira iron formation (itabirite) in Quadrilßtero Ferrffero (QF), as elsewhere in the world, are restricted by the apparent lack of adjoining volcanic units, severe syndeformational metamorphism and deep weathering. Besides the three types of iron formations at QF (siliceous, dolomitic and amphibolitic; Dorr, 1969) we include a fourth type initially described as ocherous, goethitic, limonitic or even yellow iron formation. Considering its high magnetite content, it has been described as yellow magnetite itabirite (Pires, 1979). It was reported as formed by the alteration of the dolomitic itabirite (Dorr, 1969) although the anomalous Al2O3 contents are high for normal weathered itabirite. The yellowish magnetitic itabirite occurs at the bottom of the Itabira Iron formation, along the contact with the Batatal schists, and at the top units of the Itabira, within the Gandarela Formation. Within the magnetitic itabirite at the Tamanduß iron ore mine there are metric zones, concordant to the bedding of pillow-like structures, exhibiting a porous core, surrounded by an intermediate, more granular zone with numerous, minute rounded cavities grading to an external, fine-grained zone with much less minute cavities. In the external portions of some pillows a breadcrust type structure, derived by quenching with the water can be observed. In some other zones, such as the Barreiro hill, an outer, vesicular, whitish yellow, 5 - 10 mm thick, band grades to an aphanitic, isotropic band. The vesicles are slightly flattened against the band surfaces. The existence of fragmental layers showing flowage and fragment alignment, kaolinitic laminas and vesicles filled with kaolinite at Barreiro Hill and Capitpo do Mato Mine represent mesoscopic structures, indicators of a possible volcanic origin. Chemical compositions of the magnetitic itabirite from a wide area in QF revealed a relatively high Al2O3 content, consistent with a volcanic origin.

Single pellets of mixed lead-zinc concentrate containing up to 20 % lead were roasted in the temperature range of 800-1100¦C. Variables studied included pellet size (from 9-8 to 3-2 mm diameter), gas flowrate past the pellet (from 0.05 to 5 ms t), composition of the atmosphere and the effect of additives such as zinc oxide and silica. After defined periods of time, the pellets were removed from the furnace, quenched and submitted for chemical, XRD, SEM and microprobe analysis. The oxidation of the zinc sulphide followed a shrinking core model. Temperature measurements showed that very high pellet temperatures were experienced at the start of an experiment but after 5-10 minutes these approached a constant temperature. The lead loss from the pellets was then constant with time. Thermodynamics predicted the presence of two bands of lead material in the reacted layer of the pellet. These were found in practice. The lead loss from the pellet occurred from the outer oxysulphate layer via the vaporization of lead oxide polymers. The vapour pressure of PbO, and the loss of lead, was dependent on temperature and bulk gas concentrations of SO2 and 02. At 1100¦C the addition of silica greatly reduced the loss of lead from the pellet. Physical factors such as pellet diameter and gas flowrate past the pellet affected the particle dynamics. These results were found to vary in accordance with the predictions of the Froessling equation.

The development of structural defects in the overburden material immediately behind a production blast was studied using surface and subsurface techniques. A significant increase in vertical and horizontal fracture intensity was recorded. The extent of fracturing into the highwall appeared to be dependent on the structural and petrologic characteristics of the various lithological units and the relative position of the explosive charges. A shallow zone of disruption to a depth of 10 m and extending to around 30 m from the newly formed highwall crest was recorded. Horizontal fractures in lower units of the overburden sequence were recorded at distances up to 50 m from the new highwall Face.

British Coal has made a practical progressive approach to improving the reliability of its mining equipment. Reliability must be addressed at the specification stage but does not end there and routine procedures are used to procure equipment of adequate reliability. The techniques used to monitor and improve reliability during the operational phase of the equipment, providing engineers and operators with detailed printouts, together with the types of maintenance employed, ensure high levels of availability. Finally, the methods of repair and overhaul of British Coal equipment and systems ensure that the initial reliability targets outlined on the specification, can still be achieved.
