The negative effects of pyrite and pyrrhotite on thiosulfate gold leaching have been investigated. Possible remedies to reduce some problems are discussed. In a gold bearing pure silicate ore, 92% of gold could be extracted within 3 hours using a solution containing 0.2 mol/L ammonium thiosulfate, 0.9 mol/L ammonia, 30 - 300 ppm copper sulfate and 8.6 ppm dissolved oxygen at pH 10.26. The thiosulfate consumption was 7.1 kg/t under these conditions and could be further reduced to 3.5 kg/t by decreasing the dissolved oxygen to 0.3 ppm. Addition of 16% pyrrhotite or pyrite into the silicate slurry led to a decrease in gold extraction by 2% or 9% respectively and an increase of thiosulfate consumption by 11 kg/t or12.8 kg/t respectively in three hours. Several adjustments, such as increasing copper ion and ammonia concentration and reducing the dissolved oxygen level to 0.3 ppm resulted in increased gold extraction and lower thiosulfate consumption despite the presence of these sulfides.

"Washington State's diverse geological setting is reflected by its several types of porphyry Cu-Mo deposits. All are associated with calc-alkaline intrusions, and they range in age from Jurassic to Miocene.The largest is the Mount Tolman Mo-Cu deposit located in the Omineca Belt. It contains 2.18 billion tonnes of material averaging 0.093% MoS2 and 0.09% Cu. There are intermediate-size Mesozoic deposits in the Intermontane Belt. The Cascade volcanic arc hosts small- to medium-Tertiary deposits. Among these, of particular interest is the Sunrise breccia pipe, which has been explored over a vertical distance of 1000 m. It contains reserves of 64.6 million tonnes averaging 0.319% Cu and 0.071% MoS2 with significant tungsten values. The Glacier Peak deposits have potential resources of 1.7 billion tonnes averaging 0.334% Cu and more than 0.015% MoS2 and also contain tungsten. The Margaret deposit can be classified as a porphyry Cu-Au type; it has reserves of 200 million tonnes averaging 0.434% Cu, 0.0175% MoS2> 0.27 g!t Au and 1.92 g!t Ag. Drill intercepts of the North Fork deposit also show significant gold values.Mineralization and hydrothermal alteration of these deposits are typical of porphyry deposits, although some differences can be noted. The Mount Tolman molybdenum deposit contains topaz alteration zones and is transitional between a plutonic type and a Climax-type molybdenum system. Other deposits, such as the Kelsey, Mazama, North Fork, and Margaret, are low-sulphide systems that contain significant amounts of magnetite."

BEFORE going into detail on the subject to be presented, a brief outline of the Company's earl y history would not be out of place. Prospecting and mining on a small scale was started in 1876 on the site of the present open pit at Thetford Mines. The property was purchased from the Crown in 1878 and Johnson's Company was incorporated in 1885. It is owned and operated today by descendants of the original shareholders. Many employees, through their fathers and grandfathers, have service records dating back three generations. The principal asbestos deposit at Thetford Mines is pear-shaped, with surface dimensions of about 2,200 feet in length by 1,300 feet in maximum . width. Its long axis strikes northeast and the dip is nearly vertical, but irregular in detail. It is known to extend to a depth 1,200 feet below the original surface, but its area at that depth has not been determined. Ownership of this deposit is divided among three active Companies: the Asbestos Corporation, Limited; Bell Asbestos Mines, Limited; and John-son's Company. Johnson's Company owns a section about 1,000 feet in length and 500 feet in width, bounded on the northeast by the King mine of the Asbestos Corporation and on the northwest by the Bell pit. On Johnson ground, there was originally a large outcrop o~ asbestos rock which dipped toward the south below overburden. This was mined until recently by open pit, the overburden being stripped off as far southward from the original outcrop as was economically possible. As the. pit was deepened, within side walls maintained at a maximum safe slope, its floor area, of course, became progressively smaller, and eventually the pit would have wedged out against the Bell property line. It became necessary, there-fore, to introduce some other method of mining before production became seriously curtailed by a shrinkage of the pit area.

Any improvement in national or world conditions must have its origin within the communities. Any attempt at solution of the community problem must give some consideration to the fundamental elements which exist in every community, and to the underlying principles, and ways of life and thought, upon which community life is based. The community is, in its essence, a number of people living and working more or less closely together, sharing common rights, privileges, conveniences, and comforts, which would be impossible for the individual to obtain for himself by his own efforts alone, or in any other way than by the mutual exchange of persona! services and resources. In this way, men have increased the returns from their labour and commerce, have raised the standard of their living, with better social, educational, and recreational facilities, and enjoy a greater personal security.

"Seepage is a major cause of earth-rockfill dam failure. Numerical simulation of infiltration process, distribution of drift, flow velocity and direction after the impoundment can guide seepage control and evaluate its effects. A double field coupling model is established based on soil consolidation theory and the interaction between the seepage field and the temperature field. The simulation is implemented under the situation of core wall setted, core wall not setted, and core wall setted with concentrated leakage. The results indicated that the saturation line height was significantly reduced due to impervious core wall, and the temperature distribution is uniform above the saturation line. If concentrated leakage occurs, temperature distribution of dam was significantly changed, which is consistent with theoretical inference.INTRODUCTIONEngineering seepage field distribution must be calculated in seepage control design, optimization, and correction of new engineering construction of earth dams, as well as in seepage monitoring and evaluation of existing earth-rockfill dams. The aim of calculation is to identify the important parameters in seepage field, such as the coefficient of permeability, seepage flow, pressure, head, and allowable seepage slope, for effectively implementing seepage control design, correction, safety assessment, and anti-seepage reinforcement. These seepage parameters usually can be obtained by in-situ test and back-analysis based on reliable monitoring data.In order to obtain reliable monitoring data and reflect the earth-rockfill dam seepage state and change process, appropriate monitoring technology and monitoring method is necessary. The traditional seepage monitoring method is through site inspection and sensors (e.g., osmometer, piezometric tube and measuring weir) that buried in the structure and its foundation. "Normal sequence of operations to develop a new underground mine is: construct and outfit headframe for shaft sinking, sink shaft, construct and outfit shaft sump, develop shaft station and shaft bottom steel. In an effort to reduce the overall project schedule, an innovative plan was developed to install service shaft steel below station level, prior to the completion of the shaft sinking effort. To better evaluate the construction of this substantial steel tower, a preliminary constructability evaluation was conducted, including the best method of supporting the main tower; from the bottom, middle or top of the tower. The design criteria and plan involved: •,Develop access from existing service shaft, 25 km underground •,Use of materials to maximize strength while minimizing corrosion exposure •,Estimating the location of the shaft centerline •,Over excavating the station and shaft below station to allow future shaft steel repositioning •,Designing the tower steel for modular installation •,Incorporate commissioning considerations, such as suspension of the cheese weights during steel installation •,Provision for covered stair access to shaft bottom •,Enclosed shaft envelope with open panels to allow visibility and ventilation The design approach was innovative and this paper will describe the design principles and challenges encountered while providing insight into the solutions developed and implemented; especially the modular construction and installation methodology. INTRODUCTION In an effort to expand the mining operations, a plan was developed to construct a new service shaft closer to the new mine workings and convert the existing service shaft to a production shaft at the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. (PCS now Nutrien) Rocanville Potash mine in southeast Saskatchewan. The new service shaft required a multi roped friction hoist operating a cage / counterweight, rope guided conveyances to support the operational requirements. The service shaft is an integral part of the mining infrastructure as it provides access to the underground workings, transport personnel and materials underground for operation and maintenance of the mine. The shaft also allows for services required for safe operation of the underground mine, power supply, controls, communication, dewatering and fresh water supply."

The leaching kinetics of iron during the atmospheric direct leaching (ADL) of marmatite concentrate was studied under the following conditions: reaction temperature of 343-383 K, slurry pressure of 0.3-0.7 MPa, particle size of (-74 ?m, +63 ?m), (-63 ?m, +44 ?m), (100%-44 ?m). The statistical effects of reaction temperature, total pressure and particle size of concentrate on the extraction and the leaching rate of iron were analyzed. The results show that reaction temperature is a significant factor while slurry pressure and particle size are not statistically meaningful with respect to the extraction or the leaching rate. The extraction of iron fits better to the mixed-controlled shrinking core model and the apparent activation energy was calculated to be 37.66 kJ/mol. The leaching of iron is mixed controlled by the interfacial chemical reaction and diffusion across the product layer.

Two series of laboratory flotation tests were carried out to study the treatment of Faraday ore by two-stage flotation. First the acid-consumers and then the uranium minerals were floated. On ore ground in the Faraday mill grinding circuit, and using Faraday mill water in the flotation step, a recovery in the flotation concentrate of from 91 to 93 percent of the uranium was obtained in 45 to 50 per cent of the weight at a grade of 0.24 per cent U30s. The saving of acid in leaching the uranium-bearing flotation concentrate, as compared to leaching the whole ore, ranged from 30 to 46 per cent. The average over-all extraction resulting from flotation and leaching of the flotation concentrate was 88.1 per cent. The best collector for the acid-consumers was sodium oleate. Acintol F A-1 emulsion was the best collector for the uranium minerals, and, in the uranium flotation step, an acid pH in the slurry was found to be necessary. The reagent costs were estimated to be 22 to 26 cents per ton of ore.

"Of the 135 current or past-producing 'gold-only' mines in the Superior Province of the Canadian Shield which have produced more than 100,000 tons of ore, the 33 mines which have produced one million ounces or more of gold have accounted for over 84o/o of the total production of 137 million ounces. The published literature on these 33 deposits was reviewed in order to determine the geological setting of the mineralization on a regional (mining camp) and local (mine) scale. The dominant rock types underlying the mining camps are mafic, variolitic, tholeiitic volcanic rocks with a significant ultramafic (komatiitic) component, and clastic and/ or exhalative sedimentary rocks. Felsic volcanic rocks are generally subordinate. Most mining camps are located at or near the top of the mafic-ultramafic sequence, and generally there is a major sedimentary-volcanic contact present which may be 1) a stratigraphic superposition of volcanic and sedimentary units, 2) a rapid, along-strike gradation from dominantly volcanic to dominantly sedimentary units due to facies change, or to the formation of structurally controlled sedimentary basins during volcanism, or 3) frequently (at 40o/o of the camps) a juxtaposition of sedimentary and volcanic sequences across a major fault zone or 'break', which in many instances may represent a reactivated, syn-volcanic basin-margin fault.In contrast to the regional setting, on a local or mine scale over 90o/o of the 33 mines contain felsic intrusions and/ or extrusions within mine workings. The felsic rocks may be quartzbearing (commonly quartz-feldspar porphyries) or dominantly quartz-free (commonly feldspar porphyry syenites or monzonites), and appear to have been emplaced in two different depth-zone environments: an epizonal intrusive environment, and a volcanic vent environment. Although the distinction between epizonal intrusive and volcanic intrusive-extrusive rocks is uncertain in many deposits, the two are tentatively separated on the basis of the grain size of the rock matrix (medium to coarse grained vs aphanitic to fine grained), homogeneity (multi-phased and/ or compositionally zoned vs compositionally homogeneous), and the shape and relationship to stratigraphy of the igneous body (circular or oval in cross section, and cutting the stratigraphy at a low angle vs lenticular and either stratiform or cutting the stratigraphy at a high angle). In addition, felsic intrusions of the volcanic environment commonly grade into tuffs or breccias of extrusive origin, whereas epizonal intrusions do not.Stratiform ore zones of possible exhalative sedimentary origin appear to be confined to deposits in which volcanic felsic rocks are present, and are absent from deposits in which only epizonal felsic intrusions are present. Pervasive carbonate- rich alteration, commonly in roughly stratabound zones of regional extent, and carbonate-rich chemical sedimentary rocks are present in over three-quarters of the deposits containing quartz-bearing felsic volcanic rocks, but are much less common in deposits with quartz-free felsic volcanic rocks. The host sequences of epizonal felsic intrusions which are quartzfree are more commonly sedimentary than those of quartz-bearing epizonal felsic intrusions.Quartz, carbonate minerals, arsenopyrite, scheelite, tourmaline and Cr-muscovite ('juchsite') are the most common mineralogical associates of gold. Arsenopyrite is essentially restricted to the volcanic environment, occurring in about twothirds of the deposits with quartz-bearing felsic volcanic rocks and less than half of the deposits with quartz-free volcanic rocks. Tourmaline, on the other hand, is almost ubiquitous in deposits associated with epizonal intrusions and also occurs in about two-thirds of the deposits associated with quartz-bearing felsic volcanic rocks, but in only one of the eight deposits associated with quartz-free felsic volcanic rocks. Kazakhstan’s first commercial copper-leach solvent extraction-electrowinning plant, Central Asia Metals’ Kounrad project, was commissioned in April 2012. Exploiting low grade waste stockpiles produced during Soviet era open pit mining, a 10,000 tpa copper cathode plant was designed, constructed and commissioned within 18 months. Overcoming initial challenges with a workforce unfamiliar with the technology and with extensive periods of sub-zero conditions during winter the project has consistently met targets and produced high quality copper cathodes at cash costs of less than US$1/lb. Challenges encountered during the first two years of operation are described and future plans briefly discussed.

Since the late Dr. Keith Brimacombe, et al, performed tests at the now-closed Asarco Tacoma smelter and the Inco Copper Cliff Smelter on Peirce-Smith copper converters almost thirty years ago, many Pyro-metallurgists have investigated using the technology. To the best of the authors knowledge, except for shrouded tuyere technologies using substantial oxygen enrichments, the core idea of using high pressure air injection has not been implemented anywhere in the world. This paper reviews the fundamentals of this technology and summarizes the basic economic considerations. It also presents the circumstances of where and when high-pressure injection might be justified.

IBC has developed a cost effective MRT process for the selective extraction and recovery of gold, copper, and a mixture of other base metals from mine leach cyanide solutions. This is a two-stage system in which the gold is first recovered selectively as a high purity salt. The copper is then recovered separately as a sulfate salt. The other base metals are then collected as a cyano anion concentrate. Three different SuperLig® materials are used. The first stage can be used alone on gold leach solutions where copper and other base metals are not a problem. The two or three stage system is used when the base metals build up in the leach solution, resulting in increased costs. The cyanide or cyanide/cyano anion concentrate can be recycled back to the leach solution until the build-up of other salts, etc. becomes too high, or this too can be controlled with a percentage bleed stream.

Ultra-grain refinement and high strengthening of metals by accumulative roll bonding (ARB) was widely reported. However, applications of ARB to magnesium alloys were rather limited. In this study, Mg-9%Li-1%Y sheets were applied to ARB at room temperature. Six 0.5 mm thick sheets were stacked and reduced into 0.5 mm thick by four passes. The procedure was repeated up to three cycles, so that the equivalent strain of 6.2 was applied. The sheets show dual phase structure with a (hcp) and ß (bcc). Grains elongates to the rolling direction with increasing number of ARB cycles. After three cycles, fragmented a grains with average size of about 300 nm are uniformly distributed. After the first cycle, the ultimate tensile strength increases to 180 MPa from 133 MPa, while the elongation decreases, however, still high (26%). The tensile strength slightly decreases by the second cycle and does not change at the third cycle. Meanwhile the elongation increases by the second cycle and the sheets show 41% of the elongation after the third cycle.

"The geology and origins of volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits in the Abitibi belt of northwestern Quebec have been the subject of discussion since the discovery of the Horne orebodies in Noranda in 1923.The present Noranda version of the VMS model characterizes the ideal deposit as a stratabound, base-metal accumulation that is in close spatial relationship with hydrothermal alteration and stockwork zones, felsic lava domes, coarse phreatic-pyroclastic breccias, and subvolcanic intrusions that characterize vent- and proximal{acies submarine volcanic environments. Deposits tend to occur in a favorable stratigraphic interval within a mining camp, and this is well-documented in the Rouyn-Noranda and Matagami camps.However, in recent years many VMS deposits have been shown to deviate from the ideal Noranda-type. For example, the Ansi/ deposit is characterized by sulphide-bearing alteration zones that extend far above the massive sulfide lenses, and by abundant magnetite immediately underlying massive sulfide. The Horne deposit appears to lack the typical chloritic alteration pipe underlying the massive sulfide lenses, as well as laterally-equivalent exhalite horizons. The Horne and Quemont deposits, besides being the two giants of the camp, are particularly rich in gold, whereas others, such as WaiteAmulet and Millenbach, have low gold values. Finally, some deposits in the Noranda camp, such as the Ansil, Corbet and Mobrun mines, are outside the favorable stratigraphic interval. Therefore, it would appear that part of the key to renewing base metal reserves in northwestern Quebec is the use of evolving descriptive-genetic models that incorporate geological variations like those cited above."

The investigations set forth in the following pages were made in the field in Newfoundland during the summer of 1927, and later in the laboratories and library of McGill University, and in the library of the Canadian Geological Survey at Ottawa, with the purpose of collating and adding to our knowledge of the geology of an area roughly wedge-shaped in outline, and nearly nine thousand square miles in extent, stretching across the centre of the island of Newfoundland, from the southwest to the northeast coasts. To the description of this district, which contains most of the known mineral occurrences of Newfoundland, the term mineral belt is here introduced.

"The St-Honoré carbonatite complex, located 8 miles north of Chicoutimi, Quebec, was discovered in September 1967 as abnormal radioactivity was detected in the course of SOQUEM's aerial surveys. The complex, covered by a shallow layer of Trenton limestone, has been explored by aeromagnetic, ground gravimetric and magnetic surveys, and 12,013 feet of diamond drilling. Its age, from potassium-argon dating, is 650 million years. The carbonatite is approximately kidney-shaped and has a surface area of 6 square miles, 20 per cent of which is explored. It shows a central core of coarse-grained massive dolomitic carbonatite and an outer ring of foliated dolomitic carbonatite.The exploration work to date has resulted in the discovery, in the foliated carbonatite, of an incompletely drilled niobium (columbium) zone of pyrochlore-bearing carbonatite, at least 1,000 by 800 feet in size. This zone contains 5,000 tons per vertical foot grading 0.86 per cent Nb205 or at least 15,000 tons per vertical foot grading 0.66 per cent Nb205 or 45,000 tons grading 0.48 per cent Nb20s. The pyrochlore contains an average of 64 per cent Nb,Os. The central core contains a zone of rare-earth-bearing carbonatite (as monazite), grading up to 4.5 per cent rare-earth oxide, 3,500 ppm zinc and 290 ppm molybdenum. Stocks of nepheline syenite and magnetite diorite accompany the carbonatite. The total analysis and trace-element contents of typical rocks are presented."

The Flash Smelting process is the most used production method for primary copper in the world. The basic idea of the Flash Smelting is to utilize the thermal value of sulfidic concentrates and melt the reaction product, in controlled conditions, without a need for external energy. This basic principle is utilized both in matte smelting and in Direct-to-Blister Flash Smelting Processes. In this paper, the behavior of normal (CuFeS2) concentrate of FSF-process is compared to the behavior of high grade feed material produced by Outokumpu Concentrate Upgrade Process with the aid of computational fluid dynamics (CPD) simulation using add-in subroutines developed by Outokumpu Technology. Results consist of the information concerning the behavior of the suspension, reaction efficiency and other parameters concerning the reactions of the feed material. It will be shown that, using the Upgrade Process, the throughput of copper from the Flash Furnace can be almost tripled.

"Abstract -The East Bull Lake gabbro-anorthosite intrusion is one of several Early Proterozoic layered matie intrusions occurring along the Southern Province - Superior Province boundary in the Elliot Lake - Sudbury region, Ontario. The base of the East Bull Lake intrusion comprises abundant plagioclase cumulates (Leucogabbronorite Zone) hosting two distinct styles of sulfide mineralization: (1) disseminated magmatic sulfides, and (2) disseminated to massive, structurally controlled sulfides. Both types of mineralization are enriched in Pd, Pt, Au, Cu and Ni. The host rocks to the sulfide mineralization display a range of interesting features including nodular textures, dendritic­ pegmatitic matie pods, inclusion-rich zones (pyroxenite, anorthosite and granitic inclusions) and mag­ matie breccias. Disseminated chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and pentlandite occur in concentrations of up to lOOJo within erratically distributed gossan pods near the base of the intrusion. The sulfides were originally precipitated from intercumulus liquids, but were subsequently recrystallized and locally remobilized along fractures during the major period of metamorphism and deformation that af­ fected the East Bull Lake intrusion. The base- and precious-metal tenor of the structurally controlled sulfides can be explained by extensive remobilization and reconcentration of the pre-existing magmatic sulfides in the vicinity of a major shear zone. Both styles of sulfide mineralization locally contain ppm abundances of POE + Au and are generally Pd- and Cu-rich, although both display large variations in Pd :Pt and Cu:Ni ratios. The magmatic sulfides are more strongly enriched in POE and contain up to 1470 ppm Pd in 100% sulfide. Severa! factors, including source characteristics, magmatic processes (crustal assimilation, fractional crystallization) and post-magmatic inter­ action with hydrous fluid, have influenced the present distribution of POE, Cu and Ni in the East Bull Lake intrusion .The magmatic sulfide occurrences from the East Bull Lake intrusion compare favorably with marginal-type deposits from rift-related intrusions (Noril'sk-Talnakh region, Siberia; Duluth Com­ plex, U.S.A.) in terrns of their distribution, but are most similar to reef-type POE deposits with respect to their base- and precious-metal geochemistry. The combination of high POE tenors and large tonnages that is observed for the POE-Cu-Ni mineralization from the East Bull Lake intrusion suggests that a good potential exists for the presence of economie concentrations of Pd, Pt, Au, Cu and Ni in the intrusion. On a global scale, the East Bull Lake intrusion is part of a suite of Early Proterozoic plutons, many of which contain significant volumes of stratiform and/or marginal­ type POE-Cu-Ni mineralization. The East Bull Lake intrusion is also one of the oldest mineralized intrusions derived from a sub-Superior Province mantle source region that has given rise to several significant magmatic POE-Cu-Ni deposits during the period 2.5 Ga to 1.1 Ga."

"Neill and Gunter Limited (NGL) has prepared a preliminary design and a cost estimate for a ferric chloride leach plant to recover copper, lead, zinc, and silver from a typical complex sulphide ore. This plant design is specifically intended to treat unconcentrated ground ore (flotation feed), but can be readily adapted to treat bulk concentrates. Samples of ground ore and bulk concentrate were obtained from Heath Steele Mines, Miramichi, New Brunswick, laboratory testing, and preliminary process flow sheet preparation was carried out by the Research and Productivity Council in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Approximately thirty drawings have been produced, including process and equipment flowsheets, process piping and instrumentation drawings, and preliminary general arrangements. Preliminary capital and operating cost estimates were prepared for a plant that would treat 1000 t/d of crushed and ground ore to produce about 30 000 tpy of zinc. Capital and operating cost estimates were also projected for plants up to 4000 t/d of processed ore. Recoveries of 99% for zinc, 98% for lead, and 96% for copper were achieved in laboratory tests on unconcentrated ore. These recoveries were higher than the overall recoveries obtained from bulk concentrate, yielding approximately 10% more revenue.A 1000 tonne per day plant was determined to have a low return on investment, however, depending on the size and type of mining operations employed and the FCL plant throughput. DCF-ROI projections of 20% to over 30% were calculated for 100% equity financed “green field” mine, mill and FCL plant operations of 2000 t/d and higher"
