The operation of hot stoves used for preheating the blast in the ironmaking blast furnace has a strong effect on the consumption of reductants, economic performance of and CO2 emissions from the steelmaking site. Generally, it is recommended to maintain as high blast temperature as possible, because this minimizes the rate of reductants in the blast furnace. The blast temperature is affected in a complex way by the time periods of heating and cooling of the stoves, and by the amount of gas combusted in the stoves. Furthermore, as the hot stoves show degraded performance with age, it is a non-trivial task to select optimal operation parameters for the stoves. The paper addresses this computationally by applying a one-dimensional heat-transfer model of the hot stoves for optimization of the performance of the system. The complexity and strong coupling of the decision variables is demonstrated by numerical examples, where the blast temperature is maximized under different constraints.

"This article describes the project development and successful implementation of a particle sorter at the Kensington mine. The Kensington underground gold mine and associated milling facilities are located within the Berners Bay Mining District on the east side of Lynn Canal about 45 miles north-northwest of Juneau, Alaska. The paper describes the project from concept, through the development phase, including test work confirming feasibility, to a discussion of operational data and includes shared experiences from operation and maintenance. The project has proven successful in recovering gold that was previously lost to the waste dump and has already resulted in a positive return on investment. The payback was achieved in less than one year.INTRODUCTION The first paragraphs of this paper describe Coeur Mining and the Kensington Mine, its history, geology, mining operation and mill. The second part of this paper gives a quick introduction to sensor-based sorting in general and X-ray transmission sorting (XRT) in particular. This article does not cover costs or economic impacts apart from the pay-back period for the investment at Kensington. Interested readers find more in information on this in the literature (Kleine & Wotruba, 2010; Robben, 2013). Since the publication about XRT sorting at TGME in Pilgrim’s Rest (Kleine, Riedel, Ketelhodt, & Murray, 2010), this is the first time that a comprehensive data set on gold ore sorting using XRT is published. Following chapters highlight the aim of the project for Coeur Kensington, project development through testing and operation before concluding. ABOUT COEUR MINING’S KENSINGTON OPERATION Coeur Mining is the largest U.S.-based silver producer and a significant gold producer with five precious metals mines in the Americas employing approximately 2,100 people. Coeur produces from its wholly owned operations: the Palmarejo silver-gold mine in Mexico, the San Bartolomé silver mine in Bolivia, the Rochester silver-gold mine in Nevada, the Kensington gold mine in Alaska, and the Wharf gold mine in South Dakota. The Company also has a non-operating interest in the Endeavor mine in Australia in addition to royalties on the Cerro Bayo mine in Chile, the El Gallo complex in Mexico, the Zaruma mine in Ecuador, and the Correnso mine in New Zealand. In addition, the Company has two silver-gold feasibility stage projects—the La Preciosa project in Mexico and the Joaquin project in Argentina. The Company also conducts ongoing exploration activities in Alaska, Argentina, Bolivia, Mexico, and Nevada. Nonlinear time-dependent response analysis of salt cavern under extreme loads in disaster mode is of great importance to the safety and disaster prevention of gas storage group. Uncontrolled blowout is one of the extreme conditions for compressed-air cavern operation. Based on the geological structure of Jintan salt deposit, China, the numerical model of the complete process of water solution, cyclic operation, and internal pressure runaway was developed. The effects of rapid unloading on the stress filed, the progressive failure of surrounding rock, the volume convergence of storage cavern, and the ground subsidence were simulated employing an elasto-viscoplastic damage constitutive equation for rock salt. The results indicate that the damage and failure zones propagate much larger in the mudstone interlayer than in the host salt. The volume of damage and failure zones surrounding salt cavern induced by unloading process is 5~6 times that of cyclic injection and withdrawal process. The average volume convergence rate of salt cavern reaches 0.012%/d~0.013%/d, which is 6~6.5 times that induced by cyclic operation. The ground subsidence exhibits a typical funnel curve. The affected region of ground subsidence due to rapid unloading in the blowout period is about two times the maximum cavern diameters. Furthermore, double cavern analysis reveals that the interaction between adjacent caverns may be ignored so long as the pillar width is larger than two times the maximum cavern diameters.

"The effect of operating variables on the flotation performance at steady-state has been extensively used for modelling and simulation of separation processes. However, the dynamic characterization of key variables such as gas dispersion (Sauter mean diameter of bubbles, D32, and bubble surface area flux, SB) and froth discharge rate is rather scarce. In this paper, an experimental design allowed identifying the dynamic response of the flotation process in a laboratory scale flotation cell, using a two-phase system, airwater. The installation included automatic control for the superficial gas rate, JG, and the pulp level. Gas dispersion was evaluated in terms of the Sauter mean diameter of a bubble population and the bubble surface area flux, SB = 6·JG/D32. The D32 was measured using the McGill Bubble Size Analyzer (MBSA) along with a semiautomated algorithm. In addition, the froth discharge velocity was measured in real-time using a Visiofroth system. The control variables were the superficial gas rate and the frother concentration (Teefroth). The dynamic characterization of the flotation process is useful to design algorithms that allow the direct or indirect control of metallurgical variables such as flotation rate, concentrate grade and mineral recovery.INTRODUCTIONGas dispersion indicates the way the gas entering a flotation machine is dispersed throughout the volume of the equipment (Schwarz & Alexander, 2006). The gas dispersion is typically characterized in terms of the bubble size (dB), gas holdup (eG), superficial gas rate (JG), and bubble surface area flux (SB =6·JG/dB) (Finch et al., 2000). All these variables have significant impact on the metallurgical performance of flotation machines. For example, Perez-Garibay et al. (2014) investigated the effect of the particle size, bubble size distribution, superficial gas rate and collector dosage on the flotation performance, for the separation of a sphalerite mineral. The authors observed that recovery increased with the superficial gas rate ranging from JG = 0.04 to JG = 0.08 cm/s and also a maximum recovery was obtained for bubble size close to 300 µm. Gorain et al. (1998) reported a strong correlation between the flotation rate constant and the bubble surface area flux in a zinc cleaner circuit. Both variables were directly proportional at three froth depths in the range of hF =7 - 45 cm. Dobby & Finch (1986) incorporated the effect of the superficial gas rate and the bubble size on the flotation efficiency by means of a kinetic model for the rate constants. Yianatos & Contreras (2010) developed a model to estimate the carrying capacity in large flotation cells by including the bubble surface area flux."

In this paper we present the results of preliminary investigations into the applicability of new laboratory scale tests for the prediction of operating gap and specific throughput in high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR). The work is a part of the CAMIRO HPGR research program being conducted at the University of British Columbia, which aims to develop a suite of small-scale tests and procedures for the selection and sizing of HPGRs. A focus of the presented study is to test sample types in terms of their terra-mechanics based characteristics and relate them to specific throughput and gap results from pilot HPGR testing on the same samples.

Demand for metals will continue to grow as global population numbers and prosperity levels steadily increase. Consequently, there will continue to be a need to design and construct new metallurgical plants. Business success in general requires projects to be financially successful and return appropriate value to their owners. However, in the metals industry, private and public sector financing sources have become very sensitive to the perceived inability of projects to contain costs and meet other business objectives. Thus, the capital for projects has become more difficult and expensive to obtain. It is instructive to note that Ernst and Young (2011) identified that: “Delivery of predictable project results bestows competitive advantage and market confidence to those corporations who successfully instill this discipline”. The implication for future projects is that they must be systematically developed to minimize perceived risks—and more importantly—to demonstrate that the risks are managed to achieve the business case. Then, provided that the project has been developed in a well-structured way, project success can again be defined as a project with: a final cost within 10% of the budget approved at the end of FEL3, when the project is properly defined and the permit conditions are agreed upon; a start-up date within three months of the definitive, scheduled startup date; production levels at 85% of design capacity within a year of starting commercial operation; production meeting the target environmental restrictions; and with zero lost time accidents during construction and startup. The plant design is one of many integrated activities required to achieve these objectives. This book represents a valuable link between the existing engineering literature that encompasses a wide range of engineering fundamental textbooks and design manuals and the project management literature such as the Project Management Body of Knowledge, or PMBOK® (Project Management Institute, 2014). It is evident throughout this book, that the design team is a small but essential part of a much larger project team comprising the project management, construction management, and construction contractor staff. "In 1958, the Ontario Department of Mines appointed a committee to study the accident situation and mining methods used in the uranium mines in the E1liot Lake district. This committee reviewed the existing knowledge on mine design, pillar support and roof spans and came to the conclusion that scientific knowledge had not yet reached the stage of producing rational design procedures which would reduce the dependence on trial-and-error methods. Since that time, the Mining Research Centre has made numerous stress measurements in two mines to define the pre-mining and pillar stresses. A comprehensive series of tests has been done in the laboratory to measure the compressive strength of the rock; a geological survey of the region has been made to evaluate tectonic stresses; and a survey was done on mining conditions with regard to stable and unstable pillar configurations. This information has been used to evaluate pillar design as effected by pillar width and height, depth below surface, extraction and pre-mining stress fields. The resultant design of pillar widths and corresponding extraction as the depth increased is in line with past and present experience in these mines. The information available on roof stability is still insufficient to design stable stope spans with the same degree of confidence; experience and trial-and-error methods are still required."

The aim of this paper is to present the development of a data validation software as component of a commercial mass balance package. Data reconciliation through mass balance is basically an optimization problem constrained by the law of mass conservation. As any optimization problem solved with a modern and robust software application, erroneous information or starting point will always lead to a solution, whether it is realistic or not. Moreover, good information wrongly weighted by an incorrect error model will lead to the same bad ending. In an industrial context where competition requires accurate information, data reconciliation without validation can be disastrous and calls for data validation before and after reconciliation. The challenge in automated data validation resides in the development of general theoretical solutions. Until now, none has been presented and only partial solutions are available. The development presented in this paper incorporates some of these partial solutions. The integration of human knowledge into the application paved the way to a more general solution. The combination ?theoretical validation ? human expertise? proved to be flexible and reliable enough to be integrated in a commercial data validation package. Numerous examples though industrial applications are presented. These applications demonstrate the validation of raw measurements, user support in the development of error models and validation of reconciled measurements.

Many successful actions are required to bring a profitable extractive metallurgical operation into production. Competent process development performed within the project development schedule increases the chances of obtaining project financing and decreases the risk of engineering design errors being built into the commercial plant. The general sequence of steps in process development is well known: technology review, desktop studies, scoping studies, prefeasibility, and so on, with an increasing requirement for experimental evidence as the studies advance. This paper suggests principles for guiding process development work so that the efforts stay on track toward a smooth startup and a profitable commercial operation. It emphasizes closely aligning the research with the corporate goals of the mining company management, understanding the mineralogy and variability in the deposit, and guiding by flowsheet and material balance. Examples of hydrometallurgical process development leading to the early use of solvent extraction in the mining industry are given.

"When mining high grade, narrow ore bodies, the mining method often implies a very detailed knowledge of the ore contacts to avoid unacceptable ore loss and waste rock dilution. During the past decade, the use of microprocessor based drill monitoring equipment has become an accepted technique, even for percussive drilling. On the basis of the recorded drill performance, such as penetration rate, torque pressure, thrust etc., a fast evaluation of the lithological sequence of the ore zone can be made. In order to evaluate the potential of percussive drill monitoring to pro-vide detailed information of the geometry of the ore body, the technique was tested in the Viscaria copper mine in Sweden during 1996.To provide understandable information to the mine geologist, great emphasis was placed on the separation between the drilling response generated by variations in rock conditions from variations caused by the operator and the drill system. Due to the complicated geology in Viscaria, the drilling response presented to the geologists was separated in two independent signals, one representing the hardness of the rock and one representing the in homogeneity(fracturing) of the rock. With those signals a good separation between different rock types in the ore horizon was achieved.The experience from the Viscaria copper mine is that drill monitoring not only can be used to locate contacts between rock types, but also to characterize rock conditions and, often, also to specify the exact rock type present. Because it is possible to get the drill monitoring information very quickly it is a valuable complement to diamond drilling for increasing the specific knowledge of the geology and the ore body."

"There has been a continuous evolution with the use of pre-cast concrete elements in the construction of aluminum smelters. In 1990, Phase I of Alouette was built using cast-in-place concrete exclusively. Whereas, other AP 30 technology plants such as Hillside 2 in the mid-1990s used pre-cast concrete beams with cast-in-place floors. Mozal 2, in 2002, used pre-cast concrete beams with pre-cast partial-slab operating floors. Alouette Phase II went further. Not only were the potroom building beams and floors pre-cast, but the entire pot support system, insulating walls and basement jersey walls were pre-cast. Once the techniques for bending and welding the reinforcement bars and the design for attaching electrical insulating plates to the concrete was perfected, the challenge for the project remained only in the logistics of transporting the pieces to site and simple erection. The overall impact on the project was dramatic. Using prefabricated concrete not only allowed advancement of the schedule, but totally eliminated formwork, re-bar installation, and form removal activities along with the handling of all the materials involved with these activities. With the elimination of these labour and material-intensive portions of the job, exposure to work injuries was dramatically reduced. The most prevalent activity for lost time accidents is during the rough work associated with concrete formwork, placing concrete and form removal. Another area where prefabricated elements were successfully used on Alouette Phase II was for the insulating walls enclosing the pot area, known as the ""claustra walls"". Usually these walls are constructed in-situ using mortar and breeze block. Success was also achieved with prefabrication of the perimetric walls that are installed at the lower floor of the potroom. A big advantage of using prefabricated concrete in the electrolysis area is in assuring electrical isolation for the operating floors. "Pressure leaching and pressure oxidation in autoclaves are important alternatives in the extractive processing of gold, copper and nickel ores. The application of advanced control to pressure leach and pressure oxidation autoclaves could achieve significant benefits as has been shown in alumina pressure leaching. This paper compares and contrasts alumina digestion autoclaves to other mining autoclaves with respect to advanced controls. The application of advanced control in alumina with over 30 units controlled worldwide, and its benefits will be reviewed. The design and potential benefits from advanced control for pressure oxidation and leaching will be presented.INTRODUCTIONIt is this author's position and the purpose of this paper to propose that advanced control could be effectively applied to autoclaves in the nickel, gold, and copper mining processes. This is based on the proven effectiveness of advanced control on autoclaves used in the alumina industry for pressure leaching of bauxite ores. Incremental, but significant increases in production could be realized by applying advanced control to autoclaves, as evidenced by the alumina industry, and this not being implemented in other autoclaves in the mining industry.In addition, today the mining industry is being challenged to improve their production methods. In some markets like nickel, there is pressure to improve productivity and reduce the cash cost per ton. While in other markets like copper and gold, demand is vigorous with favourable pricing, and there are advantages to increase production and productivity given limited plant capacity. Advanced control has proven its capability to improve mineral processing operations through increases in throughput, recovery, as well as reducing variability. In today's mines, autoclaves are being used to a much larger scale and with much larger importance, thus it would be beneficial to improve operational performance through the use of advanced control.Accordingly, it is the author supposition that an opportunity exists in the mining industry to use a proven advanced control technology to improve the operations and financial performance of mines using autoclaves."

"About 1905, a plant was constructed at C1ayburn, in the Lower Fraser valley, 4'5 miles east of Vancouver, to process shales from Sumas mountain into heavy clay products. In time, mining operations were found to be more favourable on the opposite side of the mountain, and by 1913 a plant, which soon became the centre of activities, was completed at Kilgard. Destroyed by fire in 1949, the plant was rebuilt on modern lines, and a second plant was established at Abbotsford, six miles to the west. The Company, from its beginning, has grown with development of the Province. In recent years, operations have kept abreast of latest developments, particularly in materials handling. Latest innovation has been the complete conversion of fuel from Bunker C oil to natural gas. In 1957 the Company became associated with Harbison Walker Refractories, Limited, a leader in its field in the United States, and its title was changed from Clayburn Company, Limited, to Clayburn-Harbison, Limited. Currently, the Kilgard plant produces sewer pipe, agricultural tile, and flue liner; the Abbotsford plant, refractories and facebrick. Improvement of products and development of new ones are tasks of a recently-completed testing and research laboratory.Almost all ware produced is marketed in Western Canada or Washing-ton State. The Vancouver area absorbs the bulk of structural clay products."

Malagash received its name from the Indians many years ago on acco.unt of its turbid (milky) waters, although,' the red men did not appreciate the significance of this turbidity, and were, of course, entirely ignorant of the crystal beds of pure salt that lay beneath their feet. The salt lake of the Mississippian, or Lower Carboniferous period, in which these beds occur, was apparently a large one, for there is evidence of its existence at intervals all the way from Sydney, Cape Breton, to St. John, New Brunswick, 300 miles as the crow flies, and there is no knowing what its other dimensions may have been, as much of this horizon is now buried on the one side beneath the waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and on the other underneath the Atlantic ocean. About midway of the area and underlying the counties of Colchester and Cumberland, there occurs a synclinal basin of which the Malagash salt outcrop forms only a small portion of its northern limit. This basin has been described very fully by A. C. Hayes. (1) The operations carried on at Malagash since Hayes wrote his report have brought to light very little in the way of new geological data, except to confirm his pre-dictions as to the probable faulting of the salt strata, and the effect which these faults would have on mining operations.

ON THE 6TH JULY in the year 1953 an announcement was made to the public that touched off one of the greatest staking rushes in the history of mining in Canada and resulted, in tl1e space of a few short years, in the development of the greatest reserves of uranium-bearing ore in the world. It was ?On this date that the famous "Blind River back-door staking bee" was completed with the acquisition of some 2,000 claims by the Preston East Do me-Technical Mine Consultant teams under the direction of Mr. Franc Joubin and Mr. Robert C. Hart. That story has been told from coast to Coast and is too well known now to re-quire elaboration. Suffice to say that, in the short elapsed time of less tl1an five years from that momentous summer of 1953, three of the Algoma mines are in full production, three more are rapidly nearing full production, five more 1are approaching the production stage, a new hard-surfaced highway, 108, has been built to serve the area, and a brand new, completely planned city, Elliot Lake, is being built to provide the amenities of living to the 22,000 people already in the area.

"CeO2 doped with lower valence cations, such as Y3+, Sm3+, Gd3+ etc. is considered as electrolyte material for low temperature SOFC. Doping introduces additional oxygen vacancies and improves ionic conductivity. This work describes the preparation of yttria-calcia doped-ceria precursor material, its sintering in DC and AC field methods, and characterization of sintered electrolytes with respect to the ionic conductivity. Doped precursor materials were prepared by a controlled co-precipitation process. Sintering of prepared, pelletized particulates was carried out using three different methods such as: 1) conventional; 2) spark plasma sintering; and 3) an alternating current field at 1125°C (AC assisted sintering). The mechanism involved in the conductivity improvement as a function of defect density, grain boundary area and phase stability will be discussed. INTRODUCTIONThe performance of SOFCs depends highly on the properties of materials. Subtle variations in the composition, microstructure, or density of SOFC components can considerably alter the power output capabilities of fuel cells. Early SOFCs utilized zirconia based electrolytes but efforts in lowering the operating temperatures of SOFCs have prompted investigations into several other oxygen ion conductors – often modified with dopants to either promote the formation of oxygen vacancies or to stabilize a vacancy rich high temperature phase – such as bismuth oxide, lanthanum gallate, and ceria.The transport of oxygen ions through the electrolyte first begins with diffusion into the material. While this is generally a surface kinetics phenomenon, it is safe to say that it is highly dependent on oxygen pressure and vacancy gradients. The role of the cathode in SOFCs is to reduce oxygen at the electrolyte surface creating an O2– ion gradient which induces permeation into the material. Once inside and under the influence of a potential field, O2– ions migrate by a vacancy hopping mechanism, Catlow, C.R.A. (1990), effectively exchanging positions throughout the matrix until they reach the anode and react, thus leaving the matrix."

"Smelting of copper-gold ore from nearby Rossland mines started at Trail in the 1890s. As ore from the Rossland mines became exhausted, lead smelting offhand-sorted galena orefrom other British Columbia mines was initiated. With the development of flotation technology for the separation of lead, zinc, and iron sulphides in the first two decades of this century, the large Sullivan orebody at Kimberley, British Columbia, became the foundation for the growth of a major zinc and lead smelter at Trail. Lead smelting began in 1901, electrolytic zinc in 1916, and by 1984, the Trail metallurgical complex had produced 10 million tons of each metal. Its present capacity is 270000 tonnes per year of zinc and 110 000 tonnes/year of lead.This paper reviews the history of technological changes in the Trail production plants, emphasizing the zinc plant modernization program started in the 1970s, and also the planned introduction of the QSL oxygen lead smelting process in the late 1980s. Lead modernization will increase production capacity to a maximum of 160000 tonnes per year.IntroductionCopper-gold ore was discovered at Rossland, British Columbia, in the year 1890, starting a mining industry that was to last over three decade s. Selected ore was at first transported at high cost to distant U.S. smelters, so there naturally followed a decision to construct a small copper smelter to process the local ore to matte. It was built in 1896 at the mouth of Trail Creek on the Columbia River, about 10 km from Rossland. This little smelter was to develop and diversify in the next 90 years into the world's largest lead-zinc produce.The mining boom that occurred in the northwestern United States and southeastern British Columbia in the period of 1890 to 1910 saw the brief operation of many small local smelters. The only one to survive was the smelter at Trail. The circumstances that permitted its continued life and subsequent growth, form a fascinating history of business deals, litigation, and steady technical progress.Early investment in local railway transportation and options by F.A. Heinze, the smelter' s founder, attracted the attention of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, which purchased Heinze' s assets in 1898. This provided the capital base for survival and growth of the smelter, which remained and prospered under the Canadian Pacific umbrella for almost ninety years. It was registered as the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited in 1906; in 1966, this name was shortened to Cominco Ltd."

RICE LAKE-BERESFORD LAKE area, situated 100 miles northeast of Winnipeg (Figure 1), is Manitoba's foremost gold mining district, although it is exceeded in gold production in the Province by the Flin Flon base-metal mining district. At present, the area is producing at the rate of about one and three-quarter million dollars annually, almost entirely from the San Antonio and Gunnar mines. The total production to date is about $14,000,000. Of this total, over $7,000,000 has come from the San Antonio mine, over $2,000,000 from the Gunnar mine, about $4,000,000 from the Central Manitoba mine, and the balance from several smaller properties. The writer has led Geological Survey parties in the area for the past four summers. The present paper gives a summary of the results of this work and also includes the findings of C. S. Lord, who was in charge of a party for one year. Much valuable information was obtained from earlier published reports on the area and from officials of mining companies, to whom the writer is indebted for their kindly co-operation. It is impossible in this short paper to give proper credit to the earlier workers or to discuss certain points o disagreement between their conclusions and those presented here. "Smelting of copper-gold ore from nearby Rossland mines started at Trail in the 1890s. As ore from the Rossland mines became exhausted, lead smelting of hand-sorted galena ore from other British Columbia mines was initiated. With the development of flotation technology for the separation of lead, zinc, and iron sulphides in the first two decades of this century, the large Sullivan orebody at Kimberley, British Columbia, became the f oundation for the growth of a major zinc and lead smelter at Trail. Lead smelting began in 1901, electrolytic zinc in 1916, and by 1984, the Trail metallurgical complex had produced 10 million tons of each metal. Its present capacity is 270000 tonnes per year of zinc and 110 000 tonnes/year of lead.This paper reviews the history of technological changes in the Trail production plants, emphasizing the zinc plant modernization program started in the 1970s, and also the planned introduction of the QSL oxygen lead smelting process in the late 1980s. Lead modernization will increase production capacity to a maximum of 160000 tonnes per year.IntroductionCopper-gold ore was discovered at Rossland, British Columbia, in the year 1890, starting a mining industry that was to last over three decade s. Selected ore was at first transported at high cost to distant U.S. smelters, so there naturally followed a decision to construct a small copper smelter to process the local ore to matte. It was built in 1896 at the mouth of Trail Creek on the Columbia River, about 10 km from Rossland. This little smelter was to develop and diversify in the next 90 years into the world 's largest lead-zinc producer).The mining boom that occurred in the northwestern United States and southeastern British Columbia in the period of 1890 to 1910 saw the brief operation of many small local smelters. The only one to survive was the smelter at Trail. The circumstances that permitted its continued life and subsequent growth, form a fascinating history of business deals, litigation, andsteady technical progress.Early investment in local railway transportation and options by F.A. Heinze, the smelter' s founder, attracted the attention of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, which purchased Heinze' s assets in 1898. This provided the capital base for survival and growth of the smelter, which remained and prospered under the Canadian Pacific umbrella for almost ninety years. It was registered as the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited in 1906; in 1966, this name wasshortened to Cominco Ltd.The Rossland mines continued to supply copper ore for the smelter until the late 1920s, but lead-silver ore also became available from the contemporary mining boom in the Slocan area, about 80 km away. In 1901, the Trail smelter diversified into lead; and when the CM&S Co. acquired the St. Eugene Mine at Moyie and the Sullivan Mine at Kimberley, the smelter was guaranteed a firm supply of lead ore. The company also purchased the West Kootenay Power and Light Company, which even before the turn of the century had constructed the first of four hydroelectric generating plants on the Kootenay River near Trail. This acquisition assured the CM&S smelter and its local mines of a stable power supply and the opportunity to diversify into power intensive technology."
