The current mining operations at Newmont Boddington Gold Mine (NBG) commenced in 2008, and commissioning of the processing plant started in the latter half of 2009. Metso Process Technology and Innovation were engaged to assist NBG with commissioning and project ramp-up through the implementation of a comprehensive “Mine-to-Mill” Process Integration and Optimisation project. This methodology entailed extensive data collection which included drill and blast audits, ore characterisation, comprehensive comminution circuit surveys and review of operational data to assess the limitations within the current mining and processing operations. The results of these investigations have been used to define the operating base line of both the mining and processing areas and identify improvement opportunities. The use of modelling and simulations, utilising actual production data, has allowed for multiple scenarios to be evaluated, minimising the requirement for actual trials and thereby minimising impact on the operation. Improvements implemented to date include: the introduction of routine rock strength measurement for inclusion in block models, modifications to blast design improving ROM fragmentation and downstream comminution process performance, and changes to improve performance of secondary crushing and grinding circuits. Close cooperation between the mine and plant personnel is playing a significant role in overcoming the challenges presented to this operation and further improvements are targeted for the second full year of process plant operation.

The European Guideline ETAG 027 - 2008 (?Guideline for European Technical Approval of Falling Rock Protection Kits?) defines the procedures to test rock fall barriers. Nowadays, this guideline is essentially the only test and construction framework utilized by manufacturers and it is also starting to enter in the mentality of designer who can clearly specify the performances of rockfall barriers. ETAG 27 (and the related European Technical Approval and the CE marking) represents a milestone for the rockfall barrier market, because it gives the possibility to compare the performances of different fences and it ensures the quality of the certified product. For these reasons ETAG 27 presently constitutes the base for tenders all around the world. Although rockfall barriers are in common use, designers and consultants do not have a clear overview of the real performances and the technological limits of these structures. The first problem can be solved using ETAG 27 criteria, which allow designing rockfall barriers at ultimate and serviceability limit state. Even though ETAG 27 uses crash tests performed with the Service Energy Level (SEL) and Maximum Energy Level (MEL), design with these concepts is not obvious or in common acceptance. Some preliminary questions must be solved. When can these energy levels be correctly applied? In the case of rockfall simulations, what probabilistic approach must be used for the evaluation of the barrier? Unfortunately ETAG 27 does not give any information or tests relating to the technological limits of the fences. Therefore some important questions arise. How do the site specific aspects of installation affect the barrier performance? What is the behaviour of the barriers under extreme conditions? And finally, the main question lies in the background: what is the functional reliability of ETAG 27? All of the above questions require comprehensive answers, which is consistent with the experience of designers, installers and producers. Officine Maccaferri S.p.A., with its 130 year experience in the field of rockfall protection, collected a large number of case histories with barriers impacted by single or multiple blocks, debris flows, and snow avalanches. The heat pipe is a self-contained, passive structure that uses a liquid-vapour fluid cycle to provide high thermal conductance . Through the proper selection of working fluids and container materials, heat pipes have been operated at temperatures ranging from less than -300°F to more than 3,000 °F. The passive nature, high efficiency and configuration flexibility of the heat pipe are presented. The application of McDonnell Douglas Astronautics Company Cryo-Anchor® heat pipes for foundation and support stabilization in permafrost regions is discussed. Using the proven Cryo-Anchor technology base. a proposed application of heat pipes in a cold -region mine ventilation system heat recovery heat exchanger is presented. Information obtained from the development of an air-cooled heat pipe steam condenser provides the technical basis for large -scale heat pipe applications.

In-situ recovery (ISR) is under increased investigation as a viable methodology for the extraction of minerals in ore bodies that may be uneconomic to mine by traditional methods or for resources situated in locations where underground and surface mining operations are not feasible. Although the concept of ISR is relatively new with respect to hard rock applications, it is not a new technology; it has been used successfully in potash and uranium mining and also in heavy oil extraction for years where it has been proven to be both technically and commercially viable. ISR allows for the extraction of metals and minerals without the need to mine large amounts of ore that need to be processed at surface. The ore stays in-situ and only the valuable metals and minerals are produced to surface in a process that produces very little to no waste rock or tailings. This paper aims to discuss the geological conditions that make ISR amenable to an ore body as well as the application of maturing technologies such as advanced directional drilling and the creation of artificial permeability that will help to access deep ore bodies and enhance or create favorable recovery conditions for ISR in the ore body. Recently there has been increased interest in deploying ISR in hard rock applications due to a number of factors: the drive for environmental stewardship is stronger than ever, technological advances in drilling, blasting, and leaching are strengthening ISR economics, and a large inventory of ore bodies exists that are not feasible to mine or extract using conventional open pit or underground mining techniques. ISR allows for the extraction of valuable metals and minerals without the need to mine large amounts of ore that need to be processed at surface. The ore stays in-situ and only the valuable metals and minerals are produced to surface in solution via a recovery process that produces very little to no waste rock or tailings. Where the right conditions exist, the ISR process has a much smaller environmental footprint (Hiam-Galvez, 2018) and potentially much lower capital and operating costs than using conventional mining techniques.

The comminution circuit at Tarkwa Gold Mine was commissioned as a Single Stage SAG mill operated in closed circuit with hydrocyclones designed to process 4Mtpa. The circuit was later expanded by adding a secondary ball mill in closed circuit with hydrocyclones with a view to treat 12Mtpa. The change in the circuit configuration and assigning the low aspect ratio SAG mill for primary grinding application makes the Tarkwa experience unique in terms the optimisation strategy and operating philosophy. This paper reports the findings from a series of surveys performed on this plant. The surveys reported include data obtained when the SAG mill was operated as a single stage mill in closed circuit with hydrocyclones and also SABC mode under two different feed conditions. The differences in operating philosophy between the initial single stage SAG circuit and the current SAG/Ball mill circuit are discussed.

Chemical conversion coating is a process to create thin oxide/hydroxide film containing several inorganic/organic compounds by way of chemical deposition reaction. In case of the application to Mg mobile electronic housings, the film should possess a good electric conductivity while keeping adequate corrosion resistance and working as a paint base. The use of toxic/hazardous chemicals is strictly prohibited from the environmental aspects. This paper describes the recent trend of conversion coating used for Mg electronic housings and analyzes critically from the point of surface technology. The importance of cleaning process and understanding of surface microstructure are particularly emphasized with several experimental results.

Magnesium and its alloys are attractive for use in automotive and aerospace applications because of their low density and good mechanical properties. However, difficulty in forming magnesium and the limited number of available commercial alloys limit their use. The present work reviews the efforts to improve the attractiveness of magnesium through non-traditional processing, and presents results of current work on producing magnesium alloys via powder metallurgy (P/M). P/M can be used to alleviate the formability problem through near-net-shape processing, and also allows unique chemical compositions that can lead to new alloys with novel properties. The surface layer formed on the Mg powders during processing acts as a barrier to diffusion and sintering is problematic. The layer contains oxides, hydroxides and carbonates of magnesium, formed by reactions with the atmosphere. There are several means to possibly overcome this barrier. Alloying additions have been identified that may promote surface layer disruption during sintering. Processing variables such as sintering atmosphere may reduce the layer or allow the formation of less detrimental compounds. Post-sintering processes such as hot working may disrupt the layer and improve density. The experimental effect of all these processing parameters is presented in this paper.

The trend in mining thermal coal is only to mine coal with the lowest sulphur content. In many coal seams, bands of coal with high sulphur content are often present, generally occurring either at the roof or floor level. Methods of selective mining are, therefore, necessary to recover only the low sulphur coal. This paper examines the methods currently in use in mines and the alternative methods that are able or have potential to offer control of shearers and continuous miners where greater thicknesses of coal have to be left in the roof and floor. These alternative methods rely on such characteristics as neutron gamma radiation; electromagnetic waves; vibration; infrared; infrared; optical; pick force; X-ray fluorescence; conductivity; gyroscopes and laser systems.

"The INCO SO2/air process was patented by INCO in 1985 (Borbely, Devuyst, Ettel, Mosoiu & Schitka, 1985). Well over 80 mining operations worldwide are using this process to oxidize cyanides to cyanates in the tailings from gold, silver and copper mining operations. Though it is possible to supply sulphur dioxide (SO2) in either gas or liquid form, the majority of these SO2/air operations use sulphite-based salts as the ‘SO2’ equivalent reducing agent. This is probably due to the lower capital cost, safety concerns with, and availability of liquid SO2. Sodium metabisulphite (SMBS) is commonly employed, and its cost is an order of magnitude higher than that of sulphur. The increased capital expenditures (CAPEX) for a sulphur-burning SO2 gas plant could have a pay-back of less than two years. In addition, a SO2 gas plant offers potential for significant heat recovery from the sulphur burning process. In terms of safety, the SO2 gas plant only requires the storage of relatively benign sulphur and the site inventory of SO2 will be limited to the plant gas inventory. Furthermore, a SO2 gas plant will not trigger the US Clean Air Act Section 112(r) accident prevention regulations, as may be the case for liquid SO2.Most existing mining operations using ‘SO2’ are gold operations, but in recent years there has been an increased interest in larger sulphur dioxide gas plants for hydrometallurgical facilities that employ leaching of cobalt/manganese minerals or precipitation of manganese/iron (e.g. Tenke Fungurume and Boleo).This paper discusses the different processes which require SO2 as a reducing agent and compares the capital and operational costs of a SO2 gas plant to conventional process alternatives using sulphite-based salts or liquid SO2.The heart of the SO2 gas plant is the sulphur furnace. The most economical way to produce SO2 is by combustion of sulphur in air producing up to 19.5 vol% SO2. Examples of large and small sulphur furnaces are discussed in terms of design, operation, and impacts on operational costs.The SO2 gas produced in a sulphur-burning plant has to be contacted with the liquor to be reduced. The choice of gas-liquid contacting device is important, and two contacting devices are discussed: 1) Gas sparging into the bottom of leach tanks (high, nearly constant, back pressure due to liquid head) and 2) absorption columns (low gas-side pressure drop)."

"The Athabasca region forms part of the Churchill province of the Canadian Shield and is underlain by an Archean or Aphebian assemblage of rocks that underwent severe metamorphism and granitization during the Hudsonian orogeny (1750-1950 m.y. ago). In places, the eroded orogen is overlain by unmetamorphosed cover rocks (in-cluding the Martin and Athabasca formations) of probable Paleohelikian age. Basic dykes cut all the rocks of the region.There are innumerable vein-type pitchblende deposits and many syngenetic occurrences of uraninite in crystalline basement rocks. Evidence is presented to show that pitch-blende was emplaced during the final stages of the Hud-sonian granitization and followed the crystallization of syngenetic uraninite transitionally. In terms of P-T condi-tions, the pitchblende deposits belong essentially to Lindgren's mesothermal group.Based on the postulated uranium metallogenesis, the possibilities of finding further deposits of pitchblende and other types of uranium deposits are discussed."

The choices are seldom simple and have to be made in the context of continuous commercial change.The development and commercialization of a new aluminum material is examined. The material has been introduced into· several different markets, so it is possible to compare and contrast the degree of success obtained in each.IntroductionAluminum-based materials have been in use for over one hundred years and , therefore, the development of a new family of alloys is rare. In the early 1970s, Dr. L.R. Morris and his coworkers at Alcan' s Kingston Research Centre started work on what was, at the time, something of a scientific curiosity-a family of alloys strengthened by an unusual mechanism.This paper deals with the development and commercialization of what became known as the Alcan 255 alloys"". These alloys have found uses in several markets, usually as improved substitutes for existing materials. Forecasting the usefulness of a substitute material in an existing marketplace is difficult, in part, because even material users are seldom able to specify precisely their requirements. This uncertainty can cause the failure of some substitutions but can also lead to opportunities which were not initially obvious.Technical BackgroundPure aluminum is a soft, weak material. It can be strengthened by the addition of various alloying elements and by work hardening. Alloying elements usually act by forming solid solutions which are stronger than the pure metal or by precipitating during heat treating or aging and so preventing the easy movement of dislocations during deformation. Elements which can perform either role had been investigated for decades and were thought to offer little chance of technical breakthrough in 1970. An outgrowth of the then new and exciting research on directional solidification seemed, however, to offer such promise.Some aluminum-iran-manganese alloys will solidify under certain conditions as 'coupled growth' eutectics (Figs. I and 2). The microstructure shows one phase growing as long rods through the other. This is an uncommon structure and it was investigated to see if it had equally unusual properties. On deformation by rolling the rods were broken up into small equiaxed , evenly-spaced particles (Fig. 3). Materials with this structure were found to be stronger than other alloys with similar amounts of alloying addition, and to resist thermal softening remarkably well. This combination of properties was thought initially to be due directly to the particles by a dispersion strengthening mechanism, but later this was found not to be strictly true."

THE LATE Dr. D. F. Hewitt, Ontario's foremost authority on industrial minerals, was the first to point out the importance of urban minerals when he produced figures (Hewitt 1968) to prove that the Toronto-Hamilton area was Ontario's second largest mining camp in 1966 (Fig . 1). In that year, the value of mineral production within a 60-mile radius of downtown Toronto exceeded individually that of Steep Rock, Kirkland Lake, Timmins, Manitouwadge and Elliott Lake. Only the nickel and precious-metal production of Sudbury .surpassed in value that of Toronto's pits and quarries. Although that position was unchanged for some years during the early sixties, it was admittedly an unusual situation: gold was still pegged at an artificially low value; uranium was stagnant; and Texasgulf had not entered the scene. However, the point had dramatically been made. The combined value of production from hundreds of sand and gravel pits and dozens of limestone and shale quarries was of formidable proportions. The mining industry of the urban fringe could not be denied. Construction aggregates, cement, building stone and bricks were fueling an apparently insatiable appetite for urban expansion and redevelopment.

In the present paper a new and highly economic route for Fe-separation from HCl leaching processes in hydrometallurgical applications is described. In most ore leaching processes, Fe is involved and needs to be separated; HCl has become an interesting leaching agent, because it can be recycled. Usually a mix of Fe2+ and Fe3+ is obtained which can be hydrolyzed directly (in case only Fe3+) or roasted via pyrohydrolysis (in case of Fe2+) to ferric oxide. Economic oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ is described, and potential technologies for regeneration of HCl with separation of Fe are shown and compared.

In spite of various corrosion studies on HPDC AZ91, there is no clear indication which microstructure gives the best corrosion performance. The skin with its fine microstructure is sometimes reported to have the best corrosion resistance, but there is no clear definition of the skin. If the skin is the outermost part of the casting and nothing is removed from it, then it is contaminated and the corrosion resistance is low. If the outermost skin is removed (about 25 µm) then a better corrosion resistance can be obtained. However this does not automatically mean that there is no other region in the bulk of the casting which could have a similar or even better corrosion resistance. Indeed, the corrosion measurements including potentiodynamic polarization and long term electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) revealed a lower corrosion resistance of the original as-cast skin about 100 pm thick. The thickness of this region is more or less independent from the thickness of the casting section. The surface region is free from any dendritic grain growth which influences the amount and distribution of the 13-phase and therefore the distribution of the most important alloying element Al. This could explain the different corrosion behavior. Further reason can be found in the enrichment of some impurities such as Fe in the near surface.

Black Hawk Mining Inc. has completed a comprehensive program on the prediction and management of acid rock drainage (ARD) at their Keystone Gold Mine (Keystone) near Lynn Lake, Manitoba. The program, initiated in 1994, followed a phased approach utilizing initial acid-base accounting (ABA) results and subsequent laboratory kinetic testwork to define site-specific sulphide oxidation and neutralization consumption rates in waste rock. Net acid generating waste rock at Keystone was defined through the kinetic testwork as waste rock yielding a net potential ratio (NPR) of less than two. A preliminary waste rock management program based on blending of potentially acid generating and acid neutralizing waste rock was advanced. Subsequent refinement of the management program followed the analysis of over 1580 ABA samples collected from individual blast holes during the initial bench development phase of the Keystone pit. Uncertainties in actually achieving adequate blending within the dumps at a mining- scale resulted in the development of a revised waste rock management program based on segregation. Recognizing that any successful management plan requires that the ARD characteristics of the waste rock be identified prior to in-pit blasting, the extensive ABA database was utilized to develop a rapid characterization scheme. By implementing a characterization scheme based on total sulphur concentrations and fizz rating, waste rock could be quickly segregated without delaying the natural flow of ore from the pit. Interestingly, it also became apparent that gold values were strongly correlated with total sulphur, such that traditional fire assays were supplanted with a simple and more cost-effective total sulphur determination. The program highlights the importance and benefits of collecting and exploiting data beyond that necessary to acquire appropriate development permits.

Abstract -Detailed sampling using a portable diamond drill, and interlaboratory comparison of selected samples have been combined with statistical studies of truncated populations to establish the gold content of several outcrops in the Val d'Or area. The outcrops chosen are non-mineralized. The background gold concentration in the rocks of the region is 5 ppb or Jess. Gold is distributed relatively homogeneously within the outcrops studied except for slightly increased concentrations within quartz-tourmaline veinlets. Three samples, of which 20 grams of powder are analyzed for each, can adequately determine the gold concentration of a structurally simple outcrop in the Val d'Or area.

Dimensional stone processing has become an important part of the world extractive industry, and today?s total stone block yearly production is estimated to be around 134.000.000 tons and is still growing by an average yearly rate of approximately 20%. In future, the same production will become an important part of the mining industry and presently, in some countries it represents even the main mining output. New environmental regulations, together with landscape and nature conservation requirements, create a number of difficulties in setting up new open pit dimensional stone quarries. As a result, many dimensional stone producers have recently started to apply underground techniques in order to produce the ornamental stone blocks intended for further processing. Underground production of stone blocks requires special mining methods and so far it has not been a cost-effective excavation method for all types of rocks. Presently, this type of stone excavation is generally applied in sedimentary and marble deposits because the rock has small to no mineral quartz content. When starting a new underground dimensional stone mine, it is necessary to analyse the impact of all primary factors which are crucial to set up a technically and cost effective advanced underground dimensional stone mine. The role of physical and mechanical properties of the rock, geological conditions, mineralogical composition, micro-tectonic state of the site, rock mechanic conditions on the site, durability and saw ability of the stone are decisive factors in foreseeing the future methods of extraction. The laboratory research work as well as the field work, is very important in decision-making aimed to choose the future excavation method. Also of equal importance is the serious market research, because it renders the indication of selling price potential. Having obtained the results from both types of research, mining engineers can design the mining methods which optimize financial return to the mine. The practice approved by 15 years of testing in the underground limestone quarry of Kanfanar gives future producers very useful advice and general data to facilitate the process of exploration intended to establish new similar underground quarries.

"Based on laboratory testwork, a two-stage cleaner / re-cleaner circuit with feed regrind was proposed to replace an existing single-stage middling circuit treating a scavenger concentrate at Inco’s Clarabelle mill. In order to effectively transfer the technology and implement the new flowsheet in the plant, an extensive on-site pilot plant campaign was conducted. After demonstrating the improved metallurgy, the two-stage middlings circuit was successfully implemented at the operation.The present paper describes the on-site pilot plant testwork and the plant metallurgical improvement after implementation of the new middlings circuit. The addition of TETA / Na2S03 greatly enhanced the pentlandite selectivity against pyrrhotite and the two-stage cleaning considerably improved the pentlandite selectivity against rock minerals. The improvement was immediate after the installation of the new middlings circuit. Size by size recovery analysis indicated that a finer regrind would further improve the metallurgy of the new two-stage cleanerhe-cleaner circuit and those modifications are in progress at the mill.INTRODUCTIONThe milling operation at Inco’s Clarabelle mill has been described elsewhere (Kerr and Kipkie, 1985; Agar, 1991). While maximizing the recoveries of chalcopyrite (Cp) and pentlandite (Pn), continuous effort has been directed toward improving pyrrhotite (Po) and rock minerals (Rk) rejection. Inco discovered diethylene triamine (DETA) and triethylene triamine (TETA) (Marticorena, et al., 1994) for pyrrhotite rejection. Falconbridge further improved pyrrhotite rejection using DETA and SO2 (Kelebek, et al., 1995). No special technologies are used in the rejection of rock minerals."

We describe a new method of characterising the effect of dissolved materials on the rate of coalescence of bubbles in aqueous media. Single bubbles were allowed to rise to meet the surface of an aqueous solution, and the time of persistence between arrival and bursting of bubble was measured as a function of solute concentration. A laser beam was placed just above the surface of the liquid, with a detector in the light path, so that any disturbance at the surface could be seen as a break in the beam. The arrival of a bubble at the surface could be detected from the behaviour of the trace on an oscilloscope, and when the bubble broke, another significant change in the signal could easily be seen. The time between disruptions was reported as the persistence time. The effect of a homologous series of n-alcohols (C1 to C8) on the persistence time was measured, in aqueous solution. It was found that with increasing concentration of a particular solute, the persistence time increased up to a point, and then declined. However the magnitude of the persistence time was found to increase with increasing numbers of carbon atoms in the molecule. Bubbles of 1, 2 and 3 mm diameter were used. Persistence time increased with increasing bubble diameter, the maximum values observed being of order 100 secs. For a given solute, the persistence (drainage) time increased with increasing bubble diameter. The concentration Cmax at which the maximum persistence time was observed, was found to be independent of the bubble size. It decreased uniformly as the carbon number increased, and was well correlated by the function y1/2 (dy /dc) -2 I dc)-2 . There was no apparent correlation with the surface excess at maximum persistence time.

"Two continuous coal zones occurring in a 2500f t (762 m) thick section of the Upper Carboniferous Pictou Group (Westphalian C and D) have been encountered in five offshore wells drilled f or oil and gas in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. They correlate, by means of fossil spores, with thick coals of the Mabou and Inverness coalfields situated at the eastern margin of the Basin. Therefore, the presence of a large submarine coalfield of at least 18000 sq mi. (46 620 km'] is indicated. This compares with an estimated size of 14 000 sq mi. (36260 km' ) for the Sydney Coal Basin.Accessibility is provided only by the small onshore parts of the Mabou and Inverness fields, because farther offshore the coals lie too deep to be mined (below 4 OOO f t ([ 219 m)).Two near-shore coal exploration wells indicate that at Mabou Mines the younger Inverness coals occur at a mineable depth to at least 5 km from land. A structure contour map of this area shows a reserve of 125 million tons in two Inverness equivalent seams that are 8.5 ft (2.6 m) and 4.5 ft (f.4 m) thick. The Mabou coals, however, reach too great a depth close to shore to possess mineable resources.A structure contour map of the Inverness submarine area, based on mine data and one off shore seismic profile, indicates inferred mineable resources of 160 million tons, in two seams that are 7ft (2.1 m) and 4.5 ft (f.4 m) thick .
